Steering Hadleigh in the Right Direction The Hadleigh Steering Group met for the first time on Monday 6th January at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre. The Group is supported by Babergh District Council, but is essentially a crossparty, cross-community group to bring co-ordination and leadership to the opportunities and issues facing the town in the near and medium future. The aim is to work together so that Hadleigh can grow and develop with a vision that is shared and in a way that is desired and intended rather than in a piecemeal and reactive manner, often resulting in delays and frustrations. It is intended that, with real co-ordination, we can achieve greater success in meeting community and business aspirations. The current members of the Steering Group are Tony Addison (Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce), Kelvin Avis (Hadleigh High Street), Jan Byrne (Hadleigh Town Councillor), Mark David (The Cooking Experience), Kathryn Grandon (Babergh District Councillor), David Grutchfield (Babergh District Councillor and Hadleigh Town Councillor), Craig Hutton (Porch Project), Andrew Macmillan (The Ram), Mary Munson (Babergh District Councillor and Hadleigh Town Councillor), Brian Riley (Suffolk County Councillor and Babergh District Councillor), Richard Whiting (Hadleigh Town Councillor), Mark Wincer (Wincer Kievenaar Chartered Architects). The Chair of the Group is Brian Riley and the Vice Chair is Jan Byrne. The Group is limited in number so as to be more manageable, but it will invite other groups and individuals to share their ideas on specific topics. In the spirit of openness and transparency future meetings of the Steering Group will be held in public at a local community venue. Much of the first meeting was taken up with discussions as to Terms of Reference and scope of activities. ...Continued on page 3

Steering Hadleigh in the Right Direction
P&
The Group did resolve to focus initially on Tourism (making Hadleigh a better place to visit), Job Creation and Community Connectivity (sharing and linking knowledge and facilities in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas to reflect the growing needs of the whole community ranging from youth to older people) These three areas will also direct the way we look at the future of the Brett Works site and East House, as well as other matters, such as the Corks Lane Council complex. The next meeting is in a month’s time and our ambition is that we can give direction and leadership as to what Hadleigh needs within a relatively short time. We welcome your input. If you feel you have ideas you can contribute we have a dedicated email: info@hadleighsteeringgroup.co.uk so please feel free to contact us with your suggestions. Overall, a good start for a Hadleigh New Year!

On the 20th and 21st Dec Staff from all departments from Partridges Hadleigh took part in a Christmas dress up day to raise money for East Anglian Air Ambulance. The staff raised a total of £203.00 from Donation buckets on the counters and staff donating £2 each instead of sending Christmas Cards. Catherine Sheppard the fundraising co-ordinator from East Anglian Air Ambulance said "Thank you for all your fundraising efforts, we are very lucky at the East Anglian Air Ambulance to have such great supporters such as everyone at Partridges Hardware Retailers. The money raised will go towards the cost of the service and our new night flight campaign which is estimated to increase the number of incidents we attend by up to 30%. A huge thank you to Trev for organising it!" We couldnt do it without our customers donations too so a big thanks to all who donated. Keep a look out for our next event.

Polstead Playgroup Polstead Playgroup was set up over 30 years ago. Based in Polstead Village Hall, it is run for the parents by the parents with a strong team of qualified Staff. In 2010, it achieved an 'Good' Ofsted rating. Our philosophy is learning through play whilst introducing pre school children to the basic concepts of numeracy, literacy and developing a creative interest. Each term focuses on a theme of different colours, numbers and letters and also a relevant topic for the time of year. This term the children have been learning about Chinese New Year and the activities have enabled them to explore this in more detail. Every morning begins with date & weather session then the children are encouraged to explore a wide range of different supervised activities, messy and clean! Whilst our outside area boasts a large sandpit, slide & several ride on toys, last year we developed a vegetable garden where the children are very involved with planting, maintaining and then enjoying the fruits of their labour. Polstead Playgroup runs term time Mon- Fri 9.15am -12.15noon and inaddition, there is a lunch club until 1pm which runs Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri. Each session costs £8.50 which includes a light snack and drink. Children are very welcome to attend from 2-4 years of age. Should you require any more information or would like to pop in for a free trial session with your child, please contact Aimee Perry, Playgroup Leader on 07799706927 or see our website www.polsteadplaygroup.org or visit our Facebook page to see the range of activities we get up to.

Jenny Cutts Retires!!! We would like to wish Jenny Cutts a happy and well deserved retirement after more than 40 years service to former Hadleigh Building Supplies which is now Hadleigh Buildbase. Jenny has worked in the construction industry for almost 50 years in total, having started her time at Halls & Co for 4 years and then going on to help Jack Beckett of J V Beckett Builders and Peter Mitchell of Hadleigh Plant Hire with their bookkeeping. Jenny has been on the books for Hadleigh Building Supplies since their limited status back in 1972 until they sold out to Buildbase in 2005, where she has continued her role in accounts until the present day. We would personally like to thank Jenny for all her hard work, loyalty and dedication. Jenny’s mild mannered attitude made life easy to work alongside. We are sure there are many customers past and present, that have had the pleasure of dealing with Jenny over the years, would like to join us in wishing her all the very best in both health and happiness for the future and to enjoy her well earned rest!!!! With Christmas and the New Year celebrations well behind us thoughts are now on a romantic Valentines with someone special or the appearance of Easter Eggs in shops – soon be Christmas again comes the sigh. Over the years the mill has seen a number of romances start and lead to marriage in Kersey or Hadleigh church. One such couple were John Brame Bradbrook who moved to the area and started work in 1862 where he soon met Anne Hoy who worked in Hadleigh as a maid. They walked out – as dating was called by the Victorians – until John proposed to Anne. They married on 1st February 1866 with John living to the grand old age of 72 and Anne living on for a few more years until they were reunited again in Kersey church yard. Many others have met and gone on to marry or go their separate ways as sure is to continue as many young couples celebrate their wedding day at the venue. Things on the building side have slowed a little due to river height and the cold weather so everyone is looking forward to enjoying another season in the adventure of putting the mill back together. Despite the weather being against us we have managed to do further works toward reinstating the steel plate adjacent to the waterwheel. The plate is incredibly heavy and took five men and an engine lift to lower it back down into the head race. Pictured is Callum Davis who was ably assisted by Steve & George de Lara-Bell Gary Barnes and Bill Griffiths The plate having been lowered into the head race now needs to be fixed close up to the wheel back in its original position you may recall this was a find that was recovered from under the water wheel over a year ago looking very sorry for itself indeed, its function is to help retain as much water in the buckets as possible thus increasing the wheels efficiency. Lovely to see it going back in. In March the plan is to continue work on the reinstatement of the plate and we will continue to work on the gates and reinstating the buckets on the wheel.. All three tasks are quite time consuming and will probably take several months to complete. Allan Scott-Davies

Bobby’s time on Tenacious “It all started with a phone call, ‘You need to look at this website’, so I did and was hooked by the whole concept of ‘inclusion’ and ‘team-spirit’, When I arrived at Palma to join the ship, there was a little feeling of apprehension on my behalf to make the transit from ‘passenger’ to ‘crew’, but these fears were immediately overcome, not only by the warm welcome of the permanent crew, whose professionalism and competence put me instantly at ease, but also by the sheer beauty of SV Tenacious. As a 58 year old, who suffers from MS and needs to use a wheelchair and crutches, I had never mixed before with other people with disabilities – yes it is fair to say that I had met, but never spent ten days in their company. This I found, to be one of those ‘life changing’ moments that made me realise that I could help and be helped by people who were less able than myself. That I could be a part of a fully functioning crew. Then the learning began: which rope did what, who was who, what was the correct terminology and the layout of the ship – the lifts, the heads, the watches – all the complicated procedures to make the voyage run like clockwork…. and then ‘the ultimate variable’ – the weather changed. Now some of us have strong constitutions, cast iron stomachs and enjoy the pitching and yawing of a rough sea; others unfortunately, of a tender disposition, found this uncomfortable, but it is at times like this that we all pulled together, helping to bond the crew into a unit… all part of that ‘life changing’ moment. To helm a sixty five metre square rigger at two a.m. in a blow, is an experience in itself. To helm while the yards are being trimmed and watch the ‘organised chaos’ come together as part of a well-trained working machine, not only gives you a feeling of personal satisfaction but also pride in your ability as a disabled person to be part of that team, of having been able to contribute, even in a small way, gives you a buzz that you won’t find elsewhere. This was translated into our team spirit when it came to our shore runs in Barcelona. Eating out in a restaurant with other people in wheelchairs, sharing the same difficulties and problems is a very ‘levelling’ life experience. When asked, ‘what did I take away from the voyage?’ – a new found belief in myself, that I can do things like go up in the rigging, be a part of a functioning crew, help others less able than myself, be helped by those who are more capable, good friendships with people I would not normally meet – but look forward to meeting again. If asked ‘Would you do it again’? ‘Yes, where do I sign’! (here!!!) Howard hits New York Hi readers: I have had a great time in New York. I was collected from Heathrow by Martin of Voyager Travel Hadleigh in his posh Ford Galaxy. I have used Martin on many occasions and he is dependable and reliable. If you need transport then give him a call Tel. 01473 828102. I do enjoy travelling and over the years I have been lucky enough to visit New York a number of times for business and pleasure. The picture shows the New York skyline behind me. You will see One World Trade Centre which is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere at 1,766 feet and will be officially opened shortly. There are public observation decks on Floors 100/102. Before 9/11 I went to Windows on the World, a restaurant at Floors 106/107 of the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. As those towers came down I couldn’t imagine how terrible it must have been for the people who were up there. Ground Zero is no more and the area is to be known as The World Trade Centre. On this visit my mother and I marvelled as the sun set when we were 70 floors up at the Rockefeller Centre. Whilst I was at The Cathedral at Bury St Edmunds at Midnight on Christmas Eve, I recently had a run over to Ely Cathedral traversing a scenic route through the Fens to get there. It was a grey wintry January day, however, I took a convertible car and it was exhilarating to have some frosty air blowing around. It was quite incredible how the mighty Ely Cathedral was constructed in 1300 or thereabouts. It costs £6,000 per day to keep the Cathedral going so I suppose that justifies the entrance fee of £8. To ascend the Towers is more expensive. Property prices in London particularly seem to be soaring. Gazumping is back. Sellers agree a price and shortly after think that they can get more and change to another Buyer. There is no obligation on either party until an exchange of contracts. An insurance has been launched to protect against abortive costs in a property transaction. I believe that the premium is £58 for £1,500 of cover for legal fees and surveyors’ fees. We can assist you should that be a matter of interest. It is irritating that large conveyancing factories seem to be prevalent. As Solicitors, in dealing with these places one is kept waiting on the ‘phone often for 10 minutes and even then you cannot speak to the person doing the job. What a client experiences I dread to think. The service that one receives from a firm such as mine is a million miles away. You are able to speak to someone with immense experience immediately and to obtain allround advice. Service sets us apart. Howard Gibbons

A Surprisingly Common Fear Revealed - Driving Phobia A fear of driving is more common than you may realise. In a recent survey, 82% of those asked said that they had felt some degree of anxiety about driving at some point since they first got their driving licence. Whether it’s a fear of motorways, town centres, busy roads, parking or anything else, a fear of driving can be a costly and debilitating affliction. A driving phobia displays all the classic phobia symptoms; severe anxiety, sweating, accelerated pulse, surreal detachment, trembling, loss of motor control (no pun intended!) and more, although unlike most other phobias there is no officially recognised Latin name for it. (The closest thing is hodophobia, a fear of travel) Driving phobics will take extreme measures to avoid driving, and it can affect decisions about career, home, social life, schooling arrangements for children, family holidays and many other things. A fear of driving makes life needlessly difficult in countless ways and can affect the sufferers’ relationships too; many partners and loved ones feel helpless, frustrated and restricted by this situation. Why do we get phobias? Most phobias work on a principle of pattern matching. With a spider phobia, for instance, it may start with a spider encounter on a foreign holiday. You see the spider and you know it could be venomous so the Fight or Flight mechanism activates automatically and you choose flight. That’s a reasonable strategy for staying safe in that situation. Back in the UK you see a completely harmless spider. Your brain matches the pattern and again activates the Fight or Flight reaction. Surviving this second encounter confirms to your subconscious that this is an effective pattern match, and every subsequent encounter confirms and reinforces the pattern match until it becomes a phobia. As with most phobias, there is a simple solution… Hypnosis is one of the major mechanisms by which your brain learns. The Fight or Flight Mechanism (A.K.A. The Orientation Response) is actually a sub-type of the hypnotic trance and is often the culprit in creating phobias. Hypnotherapy can exploit the same mechanisms in a much more calm and comfortable manner, to retrain your subconscious mind to respond in a more reasonable way. Benjamin Blake at Sudbury Hypnosis welcomes enquiries, questions, conversations, jokes and interesting gossip via the telephone and can arrange hypnotherapy appointments at the convenient locations of Mwah in Sudbury or Naturally You in Clare, both of which are well served by public transport. Babergh’s Financial Plans for 2014/15 “All about laying the groundwork for a more prosperous future Babergh District Council is using its 2014/15 budget to better align its resources to ensure it is able to make a major long-term contribution to its communities’ future prosperity. At the same time, current Council Taxpayers may be looking forward to a zero increase in the district council part of their bills next year if budget proposals being considered by Babergh councillors are given the thumbs-up in February. Council Leader, Cllr. Jennie Jenkins explained that “Babergh is looking to overhaul our budgeting process so that we can effectively deliver the Council’s priorities for targeted economic growth and community prosperity and we believe holding Council Tax at its present level for 2014/15 will help in achieving this. “Small district councils like Babergh need to increase the tax base available to them and that means encouraging more economic and housing growth. That in turn should help to meet the demands of our communities, both in market towns and in many of our villages, for local jobs and appropriate types of new homes. “The Babergh budget for 2014/15 is, therefore, all about laying the groundwork for a more prosperous future for all of us added Cllr. Jenkins. Babergh District Council is also minded to take up the Government’s Council Tax grant for 2014/15 which will mean Council Taxes being frozen for a second year running. Babergh’s current inclination not to raise Council Tax levels is dependent upon the Government finally confirming the level of the Council Tax grant on offer, just one of a number of ongoing uncertainties facing councils as they try to plan for both the next financial year and those afterwards. According to Cllr. Jenkins “These proposals reflect what is right for our communities now in that a zero increase will help hard-pressed families cope in a tough financial climate. At the same time, we believe that taking the government grant this year will strengthen our longer-term financial stability and our role in enabling more and better jobs and homes in the future. Babergh is considering two different options for increasing the rent paid by its 3500 council house tenants with a view to using the extra revenue to increase the number of homes that are available. Cllr Jenkins outlined how “we are regrettably presented with a situation that means to a greater or lesser extent we need to put our rents up in order to resource future housing opportunities. We have been liaising with the Babergh Tenants’ Forum in working up these options and I believe that these tenants representatives are broadly supportive in us using the additional revenues from rents to widen the housing choices for our communities in the future.

Did you know our Parish Church is believed to be the 5th largest in Suffolk? The first church on this site was built in the late 800’s and the first stone church built in 1250. The first major rebuild took place in 1350. A further rebuild saw a massive enlargement to the structure, a raised roof for the clerestory, side aisles, chancel roof carvings (1400s) and a spire added to the tower. The church was originally a community meeting place as well as a place of worship and there were no seats. Attendance at services was compulsory and the congregation was forced to stand until box pews were introduced – segregating men and women. St Mary’s is Grade 1 listed and, uniquely in the county and probably the UK has, in its grounds, two other Grade 1 listed buildings: the Medieval Guildhall and the Deanery Tower (1495). The Church and the Guildhall are for public and community use and, indeed are used extensively by locals and visitors. Like our own homes, all buildings need to be maintained, repaired and upgraded to meet current needs and St Mary’s interior was last refurbished by the Victorians in the 1800’s when they undertook a major change, removing the box pews and replacing them with today’s bench pews. It is time for us to look forward again otherwise it will become a building unfit for purpose and, as was said to us, “You have to make the changes now. If you don’t do it now you will simply be left with an interesting ruin”. The Church belongs to the community – to us – and it would be hugely disrespectful to everyone and to the historical effort expended over many hundreds of years in maintaining and modernising the building, not to undertake this work. The people who regularly use our Church know that the heating desperately needs to be updated and the floor replacing – a few more Harvest Horkeys and we will be dancing on packed earth ! When replacing the floor we will install underfloor heating and large ducting channels for all the cabling we will require for lighting and full audio-visual preparedness as we advance in this increasingly technological age. Hymns on i-pads ? Maybe not as far-fetched as it may sound ! We are extremely fortunate in our community in that we have people with the vision to take this project forward and people who have the skills to make that happen. There is a small task group who is steering this enormous undertaking. Make no mistake, it is a very, very big project. Funding can be tapped into as has proved the case in other areas of the UK where similar churches have undergone major refurbishment. There are many sources of funding ranging from the much needed individual small donations that people regularly and so generously make, right up to the Big Lottery and Heritage funding for the eyewateringly large amounts. We have secured agreement from the Parochial Church Council to make changes and plans are being drawn up by our Architects which will be available to view shortly. Work has already begun on restoring the pews and, despite what some people think, we will, of course be retaining some. We will also be replacing a number of them with chairs so that the space in our building is infinitely more flexible, because the need for this flexibility is demonstrated regularly by the people and groups who use the Church. There have been many Deans over the years, all of whom have left their mark and made a difference. Dean Benjamin Stannard Fryer was one such, for just over a year, and died in 1911. If there are any direct descendants of Dean Fryer, would they please contact the Parish office in the Church. You may be able to assist us with a couple of questions we have. Over the coming weeks and months you will hear and be able to see the plans we have for our Church and we urge you to come and see the works in progress for yourself as we start breathing new life into this magnificent building. We plan to celebrate the history of our Church and bring it forward to meet and meld with the twenty-first century and on. It is a story that has grown from firm roots over millennia and a story that we very much want to continue to tell. We do not want future generations to inherit that interesting ruin. Jessica Nevard

Ken's SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Brrr! It was good to get home to Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare after a walk with Mandy this morning. We dogs really appreciate the volunteers looking after us, whatever the weather and we always welcome new faces. If you would like to help look after me and my friends, (including the cats!) please get in touch, contact details at the end. We are also grateful to another human dynamo, Natalie White, who will brave the cold on her trusty stead, Claude, to ride 25K on 23rd February. Natalie wants to raise lots of money for SESAW. Please encourage her by visiting: http://www.justgiving.com/NatalieWhite9 or pick up a Sponsor form from us. Over the winter I have put on a little weight which is good for me, the same cannot be said of my new labrador friend, The Honey Monster! When she arrived just before Christmas, four year old Honey weighed forty six kilos, I’m told that’s over seven stones! At the time of dictating, she is down to forty one kilos, thanks to a strict diet and gentle exercise in her foster home. You can follow Natalie White Honey's progress and sponsor her slimming programme at: http://www.justgiving.com/thehoneymonster The Season of Good Will also brought us the obligatory dumped animals. This time two black and white feline sisters, Marmite and Peanut were thrown out in a suitcase with Marmite's seven kittens. Despite being undernourished, four kittens survived and are causing mayhem in their new homes. I do hope someone will soon give Marmite and Peanut the forever home they deserve. Even I have to admit they are lovely (for cats!) If Kelvin can squeeze my blog in this month, I thank him, and you for taking an interest in all the news from Kenny (The Boss) Chihuahua. Do you sing? Would you like to sing with us? Right now is an excellent time to join Hadleigh’s fastest growing choir, a group of people who love singing together and giving public performances for charity and good causes. We are serious about our singing but we also aim to make the choir experience fun and rewarding for everybody. Our music ranges across many styles and eras but is, above all, tuneful. 2014 is the year of our second anniversary and with our new Musical Director Andrea King we will be introducing new and exciting music and new plans for the choir. Our concert venue of Hadleigh Baptist Church is now too small for both the choir and the audiences we attract so we will be holding this year’s Summer Concert on the 19th July and our Christmas Concert on the 6th December in Hadleigh’s United Reform Church. In its short history Hadleigh Community Choir has performed at Hadleigh Town Mayor's official Civic Service (twice), Hadleigh Community Primary School's Christmas Fayre, Hadleigh Town Christmas lighting up ceremony and the Hadleigh Flower Festival. We have also presented three of our own Summer and Christmas public concerts. So if your organisation or community group is planning a special event, or is organising a fund-raising concert, or simply wishes to raise funds for a good cause, Hadleigh Community Choir would be delighted to discuss ways in which we could contribute to the success of that event, just call Peter on 01473 824033. If you are a singer or potential singer aged between 16 and 80, why not join us, even if you aren’t sure about your singing ability. There is no audition and you don’t need to read music (but it helps) and if you are willing to put in the work you will soon be able to reach our performance standard. We rehearse every Thursday evening during school term times: 7.15 for a 7.30pm start. For more information call Peter on 01473 824033 or Google ‘Hadleigh Community Choir Suffolk’.

Strengthening the voice of your local community

Healthwatch Suffolk is here to listen to your views about health and social care services in the county. It has the power to use your views to improve, shape and influence services now and for the future. That is why it is calling for your views, which can be either good or bad, about NHS health services and publically funded social care services. The message is to share your views even if you do not think that you have much to say. Healthwatch Suffolk was launched in June 2013 and has been working hard since to establish itself as the counties health and social care consumer champion. Its membership base has grown considerably and now has a collective voice of approaching 3,000 people. You can join for free too and be kept up-to-date with all of the latest news and opportunities to improve care services for your community. This year will see the setup of Healthwatch Suffolk Hubs, which will be local focal points where people can make their views heard and will mirror the county’s district boundaries. The Hubs will enable and empower local people to play an active role in the design and delivery of their local services. They will also bring together local people in each district so that Healthwatch Suffolk can obtain their views about the health and social care services that they use. The Healthwatch Suffolk Community Development Team currently attend a variety of events, groups and meetings across the county to talk to people about Healthwatch Suffolk. They are starting to recruit volunteers to act as Healthwatch Suffolk Champions within their hubs. The process of volunteer recruitment will begin in St Edmundsbury and Waveney, followed by all other districts soon thereafter. Look out for more information coming soon about how you can become involved with your local hub to make a difference to health and social care services in your community. In the meantime, keep Healthwatch Suffolk up-todate with your views because they really can make a difference. More information is available on www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk or by calling a member of the Healthwatch Suffolk team on 01449 703949

A New Year has started and we have had a great turnout over the last few weeks. The Christmas party was well attended and our founder members came to present the 'Gentle Team Shield' to the members who won the (now) annual teams event. Congratulations to David, Liz, Paul and Peter. In January we held a special duplicate session where the boards were all predealt. Players were able to take the details of the hands home and compare with their own results as published on our web site to see what they should have done! As always new members are welcome and you can come along and try playing as a guest. We will endeavor to find you a partner if you do not have one. Details of our location and times more information can be found on our web site hadleighbridgeclub.co.uk
Launched in 2009, Armchair Players is Hadleigh’s play-reading and drama club. We meet on the second Monday of every month at the George pub in Hadleigh High Street. Our name says it all. We read plays aloud in a friendly and informal atmosphere - bringing drama to life with the minimum of dramatic 'fuss'. On occasions we make group visits to local theatres to see plays performed and/or participate in theatre-related events such as tours of backstage areas and presentations by Directors and other theatre managers. Our meetings also include themed readings and other drama-based activities. We even have plans to present Rehearsed Play Readings for the benefit of small audiences who can sit, listen and enjoy. Armchair Players support the BBC Children in Need appeal with a special fund raising event every year in November. To date we have raised £2800 for the appeal. Everyone over 16 is welcome to join. Come and take part as a 'reader' or as a 'listener'. Enjoy the fun of 100% participation by reading aloud a part in the selected play, or just sit back and listen as the drama unfolds. Our next meeting date is February 10th and we are celebrating Valentine’s Day with a themed evening which will include, poetry, sketches, monologues and perhaps duologues from full-length plays – all about love. Why not join us? For more information call Maddie on 01473 824033

Nature’s Most Spectacular Night Show – The Northern Lights Amazing, magical, wonderful, awe inspiring, out of this world, mesmerizing and enchanting are just some of the words to describe the Northern Lights. These natural phenomena, of which sightings can never be guaranteed, bring a certain magical touch to your holiday. There are many theories about the best place and best time of year to see them. One thing is certain, they are very much real! What are the Northern Lights? Displays of the Northern Lights occur when solar particles enter the Earth’s atmosphere and on impact emit burning gases that produce different coloured lights. Where can you see them? The most spectacular displays occur in the northern parts of the following areas: the Nordic countries of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Alaska, Canada and Russia. Where you go will depend on your budget and the time available, but a more crucial decision is what else you want to do when you’re not standing outside in sub-zero temperatures staring up at the night sky with fingers crossed. When to go Displays of the lights are notoriously unpredictable and cannot be forecast in advance. In the northern hemisphere, the aurora season runs from late September or early October to late March. The lights may be seen at any time during this period, but late October, November, February and March are the best bets. The period either side of a new moon is recognised as the best time to see the Northern Lights. The remaining New Moon dates for 2013/14 are 1st & 30th March and for 2014/15 23rd October, 22nd November, 21st December, 20th January, 18th February & 20th March. Although visible during all phases of the moon, the light from a full moon can dilute some of the effects. For the best viewing conditions the sky needs to be clear and you need to be away from artificial light such as street lighting. What is a Solar Maximum? We are currently experiencing a solar maximum. The Northern Lights are affected by the energy, or solar flares, emitted by the sun. A solar cycle generally lasts about 11yrs. The energy and solar flares are currently at their expected peak. The recent ‘flip’ of the Sun’s magnetic field marks the midway point of the current solar cycle, extending the current period of solar maximum into the winter of 2014/15. Who can go on a Northern Lights Holiday? Anyone! We have a full range of Northern Lights holidays from the active (eg. Husky sleds) to the more sedate Northern Lights cruise. www.travel-stop.co.uk 57 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 5DY Telephone: 01473 828728 Fax: 01473 829647 ABTA P6645
Green Fair Returns to Hadleigh Five years ago, in March 2009, Hadleigh Guildhall thronged with stalls and people and music at the first Green Fair to be held in the town. Five years on, it’s happening again. Green Fairs, to raise environmental awareness and money for environmental campaigns, already take place every year in Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Eye. Now Tesco has been seen off, it's time to celebrate by reviving the Green Fair in Hadleigh. There will be Fair Trade refreshments all day and stalls run by local environmental groups, such as the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, local craftspeople, products made from recycled materials and childrens activities. The doors to the Guildroom will open to the public at 10am on Saturday, March 29 and will remain open to 4pm. There will be stalls in the Guildroom and events outside in the garden. To apply for a stall, contact John on 01449 771742, 3 Wash Lane Corner, Gt Finborough, Stowmarket, IP14 3BJ. Or download a form from the website www.greenfairs.org.uk.

Pause for Thought - Languages of love Valentine’s Day is the time we think about roses, chocolates and love. The Beatles sang “Love is all you need” and the Bible says “Three things will last forever--faith, hope, and love-- the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13. So what’s a love language? We all want love shown in different ways. Most people love gifts but if that’s not your main love language but touch is, then you probably prefer a cuddle or having your hand held as you walk down the street. Experts say there are five love languages that you, your partner, your children and everyone has. They are: words of encouragement, acts of service, quality time, gifts and touch. Find out which your partners, your children’s or your friends are, then try showing that love to them and make a real difference. God knows what our love language is and how to make a difference! “For God so loved the world that He gave his One and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16 What an amazing gift of love that was and is, because those words are: Words of encouragement, an act of service, quality time, the best gift ever and it touches all our hearts. Following Christ is all about showing love because of the love we have been given. Find out more about this love. Ken Sanderson

French’s Care Haven February at last – Spring is just around the corner! At French’s the staff, volunteers and all our horses are looking forward to longer evenings and warmer days. As mentioned last month, the lack of grass during the winter months does mean hay and straw are essential and at the same time, for us, it is the biggest drain on our funds. So if anyone out there does have any hay or straw they would be willing to donate, we would be extremely grateful, or a donation for us to buy feed and bedding would help us tremendously. Obviously, our fundraising goes on all year round, here are some forthcoming events in our calendar that you can come and support us on: 24th April – Quiz night @ Boxford Fleece; 17th May – Hadleigh Show; June – Spring dance; July – French’s Open day. We have completed the work on our improved disabled toilet and the revamped kitchen is almost there, but the workshop room still needs the window replacing. It is a standard size window, if anyone can help us with a new or second hand window that would be fantastic, as it is holding us up in completing the rooms refurbishing. The workshop room is of great value to our helpers who have learning disabilities, because when re-decorated is an ideal place to do art and craft work on those rainy days. If you have some spare time and are good at handy man jobs or would like to help us fund raise, please give Jann a call on the number below. And finally, let’s introduce another of our horses. Back in December, we told you of our smallest pony Coco who is 11hh. This month our feature adoption is Jack, our tallest at 17.2 hh Jack use to be a showjumper, but sustained injuries in his hind legs and was rescued by Jann. Although he will be on medication and need special daily care for the rest of his life, he is an extremely bright and happy horse. Jack is a gentle giant with a kind, lovely personality who loves you talking to him while you groom him. Mobile Massage Therapies I would like to introduce myself, my name is Michelle Brown, though everyone calls me Shelly! I qualified last summer after studying at Bury St. Edmund's college for a year and prior to that I completed a diploma in anatomy, physiology and pathology at the age of 39 (i am now 40!....arghh!). Prior to my retraining at the college I worked for Optua UK where I worked my way up to a Brain injury case management coordinator and was employed in this position for a little over 15 years. In this role I was responsible for designing packages of support for individuals who had experienced a trauma to the brain, ultimately presenting a range of difficulties within theirs and their families lives. I worked as part of a multidisciplinary team, alongside social workers, physios, occupational health workers and so on to create the best package tailored to the clients behavioral, physical and well being needs. Although this role presented its challenges, particularly as I was a full time working mum of two boys and a wife, I enjoyed it very much. The role unfortunately came to an end in 2011 when my husband was killed in a motorbike accident. He was 40 and i was 37. Although I don't really want to use this as a lever to fuel clients or indeed to attract sympathy, it is however the reason I changed my career to something I potentially would be able to manage around my sons and something that would I would gain enjoyment from. So...on a more upbeat note..my plan is to work from the Vinesse salon in Lavenham where I will be working on a Tuesday and for the rest of the week I will be offering mobile therapies in the comfort of a clients home. I am also adaptable and experienced when working with behavioral, physical, and mature clients and can tailor a therapy to suit a persons needs. I offer Swedish full body (or back), Aromatherapy full body (or back), Indian head massage and hot stone therapy although this can only be carried out in the salon or in a group home where more than one massage could be achieved within the day. I can be contacted on 01449 741869 or 07748 856771. Home visits and every Tuesday at The Vinesse Salon, The Black Barn, Hall Road, Lavenham CO10 9QX

This spring at Friars Hall Nursing Home we have a very full calendar. Our luncheon club outings to the Acton Crown, where we are made very welcome and enjoy the delicious food are always good fun. Our residents have decided to hold a coffee morning on the 12th March from 10.30 am to midday. It will be in aid of an animal charity and we are currenyly voting on which one to support. We are also holding a spring fayre on Saturday 5th April from 2 pm to 4 pm, old and new friends are always welcome. During our activities sessions we are going to be making some wall art, this will keep us all very busy designing and working on them. Our seed catalogues have given all great inspiration to choose different seeds and sow them. Finally everyone at Friars Hall would like to say a big thank you to Gracie our PAT Dog and her faithfull friend John who visit us every week come rain or shine. We look forward to seeing you at our events. Friars Hall Nursing Home 01473 822159

Hadleigh Helps Our Heroes 2nd Annual charity Bike Ride It's that time of year again. We are all struggling with maintaining to keep our New Years Resolutions of being Thinner, or healthier or fitter! So why not do yourself a favour, and help the charity Help For Heroes at the same time by taking part in the 2nd annual bike ride on Sunday 6 April organised by Hadleighs very own BWB Cycling Group. We are known as Birds Wot Bike, but as we now have several regular men join us (honorary Birds) we welcome all to join us in what we hope will be an even bigger and better event than last year. In 2013 we raised a little over £2600 for this very worthwhile cause. Achieved by almost 100 cyclists taking part in our 50k ride. We even had 2 tandems take part, and participants from several local cycle clubs. This year we will have the same 50k route, and for those wishing to challenge the legs a little more - a 70k option. As previously, the event will begin and end at The George in Hadleigh - where hosts Tori and Paul will be planning food and hopefully entertainment for us all to enjoy. Further details will be provided in next months community news, but if you would like to take part, or offer other help on the day, please contact Helen Allan by email at helenallan1@btinternet.com. Entry forms will be available from the George from 1 February and entry fee remains at last years price of £10 including food post ride! So, dust off your bike, get training, and do yourself and Help for Heroes a favour!

Eat Puddings and Help Raise Money For Suffolk Family Carers! It’s always a dilemma – which pudding to choose. Does chocolate win over fruity, hot over cold? How can you compare a delicious cheesecake with a rich chocolate brownie or a crisp pavlova with a bread and butter pudding? Will eyebrows be raised if you ask for a little of each? Worry no more! Local award winning, hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre have announced details of their sixth Charity Pudding Club evening, giving the opportunity for dessert lovers to spend an evening in pudding paradise. The event is being held at Shelley’s Restaurant, Suffolk New College in Ipswich. You will not only be allowed but positively encouraged to sample every dessert on the menu, and at the same time raise money for Suffolk Family Carers. On the night guests will enjoy a delicious main course, although portions are smaller than normal to allow you to indulge in the wide selection of puddings available! There will also be drinks, foodie competitions, as well as a big prize draw to take part in. Karen Finch, The Hearing Care Centre MD and selfconfessed dessert lover said, “The students at the College will be putting on a delicious spread of puddings, to showcase their talents and it promises to be an excellent night out. Ditch the diet just for one night and come and help us raise money for a fantastic charity!” The Charity Pudding Club Evening is being held on Tuesday 25th February 2014 (7.30pm), at Shelley’s Restaurant, Suffolk New College, Ipswich. Tickets are excellent value, priced at just £17.50pp. Tables are limited, so book as soon as you can on 01473 230330 or buy online at www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/puddings.

A Quiet Time at Orchard Barn Although our work continues throughout the winter months this is a very much quieter time of year for us, so we are taking the opportunity to look back at 2013. We ran several courses and engaged many new volunteers (so thank you, if you are one of them). We were particularly pleased with the response to our Care and Repair for your Traditional Building course, which ran over 3 days and covered wattle and daub, clay lump construction and repairs, timber frame repairs and working with lime as well as how to prevent/remedy the problem of damp. Typical comments from students were that they gained ‘knowledge to evaluate building repairs and their construction’ and ‘experience in using techniques and practical skills as well as theory.’ Another successful course was our 1 day Introduction to Timber Frame Repairs, described by one of the participants as ‘A fantastic day – learned a lot about the site, the barn and the craft of timber framing. Our learned tutor (Rick Lewis of Traditional Oak Carpentry) was excellent – clear instruction when it came to the practical sessions and fascinating to listen to on the theory. It has reminded me of things I know and things I should know and excited me to go on and learn more.’ We will be running these courses again in 2014, so do have a look at our website if you would like to participate. Our volunteer programme is continuing throughout the winter, majoring on hedge renovation, and including the construction of a deadwood screen from the brashwood and prunings. The photo shows one we made last year including a seat, as demonstrated by Kevin. We always have room for more volunteers, so if you are interested in doing practical work in a beautiful environment do get on touch, even if you have no previous experience of conservation work. Contact Sarah at sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or call 01473 658193/07766 054042 More information on all events and courses can be found on our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Hello All, I do like February – it’s only a hop and a skip away from Spring. Personally, I think pancakes should come with a tag line that says Pancakes – not just for Pancake Day! To me, they are simple, delicious and so versatile. So branch out from lemon and sugar, think melted cheese and mushrooms, mozzarella, salami. Don’t forget to BASIL (Buy And Source It Locally) and have a by Sarah Thompson lovely time. Basic Pancake Recipe Ingredients: 200g/7oz plain flour, 400ml/14fl oz milk, or ½ milk ½ water for a lighter pancake, 2 large eggs, lightly whisked, 1 tbsp vegetable oil, Pinch salt, Vegetable oil for frying. Preparation method 1. Put the flour into a large bowl, make a well in the centre and pour in the milk and eggs. Give the liquid mixture a quick whisk before incorporating the flour. Continue to whisk until you have a smooth batter. 2. Now add 1 tbsp vegetable oil and whisk thoroughly. 3. Take a crêpe pan, or large frying pan, dip some kitchen roll in the oil and carefully wipe the inside of the pan. Heat the pan over a medium heat for a minute. 4. Add just under a ladleful of batter to the pan and immediately start swirling it round the pan to get a nice even layer. 5. Cook the pancake for approximately 30-40 seconds. Use a palette knife to lift the pancake carefully to look at the underside to check it is goldenbrown before turning over. Cook the other side for approx 30-40 seconds and transfer to a serving plate. 6. Fill with recipient’s choice of savoury filling – cheddar, salami, mushrooms, tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh basil. Launch of new sauce range by East of England Co-op cuts the mustard To celebrate Britain’s cosmopolitan food culture, the East of England Co-op is introducing a new range of products to its Sourced Locally range. From this week, selected East of England Co-op stores will feature six new sauces from the Great British Sauce Company produced by Keejays of Hadleigh. The new range comprises traditional Sue Keeble from Layham with grandson Billy classics such as tomato sample the new sauces in the East of and brown, alongside new England Co-ops Hadleigh foodstore with flavours, such as Tomato Jason Beaumont, Great British Sauce & Habanero Chilli Sauce company and the uniquely combined Tomato & Mustard Sauce. Kevin Warden, Local Sourcing Manager, East of England Co-op said: “These sauces bring something very new to our Sourced Locally range – with great new flavours that we’re sure our customers will love. “We’re pleased to offer our customers an ever growing choice of great tasting local products which at the same time supports local businesses and gives the local economy a boost.” Great British Sauce Company co-founder Jason Beaumont claims great care has been taken to maintain homemade quality in all its sauces to achieve what the team believes to be ‘proper taste’ and sauces ‘too good to be called ketchup’. Jason said: “To really show what Britain can create, we have set out to develop sauces that will genuinely wow the consumer. We especially think we’re onto a winner with our Tomato and Mustard sauce – after all why put tomato ketchup and mustard on your hot dogs and burgers when our new sauce combines all those great flavours? “We have entrusted local firm Keejays to produce the Great British Sauce Company range. Their 30 years’ experience and demonstrable mastery in sauce production has been the key to achieving such outstanding quality and taste across the range”. Since 2007 the East of England Co-op has put £20 million back into the regional economy, creating over 100 local jobs and protecting many more. In almost five years, its Sourced Locally range has grown from a few suppliers to over 130 bringing over 2,000 local products into stores – Sue Keeble from Layham with grandson Billy sample the new sauces in the East of demonstrating just how important local suppliers England Co-ops Hadleigh foodstore with and the Sourced Locally Jason Beaumont, Great British Sauce brand are to the Society, company its members and customers. The Great British Sauce Company team is keen to share some of the favourite recipes used in their kitchen to test taste the sauces - from gourmet burgers to their secret to great tasting chips, visit GBsauce.com for full recipe details.
Cash Mob at the Idler We were somewhat concerned to learn that we had been selected for a visit by Cash Mob Suffolk on January 4th. It isn’t really a mob just well behaved people who are trying to support independent shops in our High Streets and come clutching £10 notes which they intend to spend in one independent shop The group has been newly formed and once a month they will be visiting towns throughout Suffolk. It also gives them a chance to look round the town, visit other shops and have coffee. Several members of the group who had come from Ipswich had never been to Hadleigh. This seems a most enjoyable way of spending a Saturday morning touring different towns in Suffolk and meeting people who care about local shops. Next month they will be going to Felixstowe. We thoroughly enjoyed the morning talking to the visitors and telling them about Hadleigh. The additional sales were an added bonus. If you would like to know more about the group and see pictures of their visit to Hadleigh click on their site on Face Book Cash Mob Suffolk or look on You Tube
Common ‘Myths’ about Solar Despite Solar becoming rapidly more popular in the last couple of years, one of the most common things we come across as a specialist company in the Solar industry is the number of ‘urban myths’ that surround Solar panels, that often prevent households giving them any further thought. In this issue, we will look to debunk some of these misconceptions, and also answer some of the more frequently asked questions about the industry as a whole. Myth 1 - “Solar Panels cost a lot of money” Solar panels have a reputation as an expensive luxury, rather than a financially viable solution to a home’s energy needs. This is partly due to their history. For a long time, Solar panels have been very expensive. However, in recent years, the cost of installing Solar panels has gone down significantly. At the same time, their efficiency has improved. A Solar installation now costs around ⅓ of what it did 3 years ago. It is also being widely predicted that the wholesale cost of electricity is going to double in the next 10 years, meaning that within a decade it is likely to be a very expensive business indeed to pay your utility bills. It is therefore inevitable that there will come a time when it will be cheaper to generate a proportion of your energy at home, than it will be to buy all of your electricity from one of the large energy companies. More and more people are now realising this, and are taking action to insure that they are not being financially crippled by energy bills in a few years time. This is already happening on the continent in countries like Spain, where they do not have a Feed-In Tariff, but ultimately it is cheaper to generate your own power than to buy all of it. Myth 2 - “With the Feed-in Tariff being reduced, it’s not worth doing anymore” When the Feed-in Tariff was first introduced in April 2010, it was in excess of 40p per unit generated. However, the cost of a standard 4kw system on a home was around £18,000 at that time. Although the Tariff has been reduced to 14.9p per unit generated, the cost of installing a standard 4kw (1416 panels) system on a home is now around £6,000, and a top-of-the-range 4kw system is around £8,500, meaning it has come down in line with the Feedin Tariff. The returns are comparable, but the cost means that it is now more accessible to more people. Most people do not realise that a Solar installation
typically offers returns of anywhere from 8% to 12%, which is considerably more than is offered by any savings account or ISA. Also, the returns on Solar are Tax-Free, unlike many financial products. Not long ago, the Sunday Times listed Solar as one of the top 5 investments available in the country. Myth 3 - “They only work in direct sunlight, and the UK doesn’t get any sun!” Another of the most common misconceptions around Solar panels is that they only work in direct sunlight and, since the UK isn’t exactly renowned for its sunshine, they are not much use here. This is simply not true. While Solar panels are more effective in sunnier weather – up to 50% more than in cloudy weather – your Solar panels will still generate substantial amounts of energy on a cloudy day. Crucially, as most Solar panel systems are installed as supplementary to your existing on-grid power supply, a few clouds doesn’t mean your home will be cut off. If you need any more convincing, just consider the fact that the world’s leading Solar power producer is Germany, a country with a similar climate to the UK. Myth 4 - “If the Feed-In Tariff goes down, I will lose money” What most people do not realise is that the Feed-In Tariff is locked at a starting rate when you install a Solar system, and that it then rises in line with inflation every year, as it is linked to the RPI (the Retail Price Index). So the amount of money that you will earn year on year from your Solar installation will increase annually. Myth 5 - “I only get paid for the electricity that I sell back to the National Grid” Our final myth is quite possibly the most common. Very often we speak to people who believe that you only get paid for the electricity that you do not use and is sent back to the National Grid. This is not the case. With a Solar installation registered to receive the Feed-In Tariff, you are paid the ‘Generation Tariff’ for 100% of the electricity generated, and you also receive an additional ‘Export Tariff’ payment on 50% of the units generated. This is guaranteed for the next 20 years, and is one of the main reasons why Solar is so lucrative, as it does not matter if you use 70% of the power you generate or only 10%, you will still be paid in the same format. Of course the more usage you make of the power you generate the better, as this is energy you haven’t had to buy, and this is where the savings on electricity bills can be maximised. If you would like to find out more about Solar, for us to advise you on what the best Solar solution could be for your home, or to simply get some further information and a free, no-obligation quotation, please get in touch with our friendly team today, we’ll be more than happy to help. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre The Centre is now ‘Back in the Saddle’ so to speak but I’m not hearing the clip clop of hooves, more like splash, squelch and slurp from the mud. Looking out from my room, with great sympathy, at our poo pickers I see them struggling to get the loaded trailer through the gates and, with some amusement too, as they try to distract Thyme who has recently decided to join the team by taking great interest in and around the loaded ATV and trailer: ‘More Hay somebody!’ If you were able to read my January Blog you would have noted the importance of fund raising for The Centre and how hard our Fund Raising Team work: it costs some £65,000 per annum to keep us going, and me in electricity. However, it’s not all about me and with the support of you out there, whether as an individual, group or organisation, we are able to help over 100 disabled children and adults to a better quality of life and with this in mind I would like to introduce you to Xanthe who is one of our Friday afternoon Riders. Jessie, her mother, tells us “Xanthe began riding at the beginning of October 2011. Currently she is non-verbal and not mobile as a result of having pneumococcal meningitis and suffering a major stroke when she was nine months old. Xanthe also has severe epilepsy. She is sensitive to change and dislikes new experiences that she cannot anticipate. It was with intrepidation and some fear that we took her riding. I had expected a real Xanthe type tantrum on the first session, but she was silent; she was enjoying the ride and appearing to relax into the rhythm of the pony. It was quite amazing! We hope that, in time, riding will be an experience that Xanthe enjoys fully, and if it can help her brain to remember the syncopation of how we walk by sitting on a pacing pony, further capitalizing on her slow but steady stepping, that would be great. Just to give her some independence and some cathartic therapy through riding is wonderful”……Moving on 24 months and Xanthe is able to walk with assistance and she looks forward to her riding sessions. She now sits independently on a saddle pad and is able to maintain her balance by holding the handles of a roller in front of her with both her hands. Initially she was reluctant to use her right hand. She is happy to take part in the games and is gaining in balance and strength. Well, knowing what it means to Jessie and her daughter Xanthe in being able to ride at Shelley is alone, I think, payback enough for all of the hard work of our volunteer Helpers and my hairy hoofed friends. Hello! Someone new coming through the door; a new Rider for assessment me thinks? We can always use more volunteers if we are to help people such as Xanthe so, if you’re up for it, fill in the Application Form which you can download from the Web site, or call and come to The Centre; you might even meet me! Hadleigh Loyalty Card Scheme The winner of the £50 cheque in the January draw is Ruth Ferguson – congratulations. Although we have lost two shops in the High Street, one new shop has joined the scheme – this is “Rachel”. We hope the other new shops which are coming into the town will also take part. After running for just over a year there is still a great interest in the scheme and we have been fortunate in obtaining two generous donations towards the running costs. We are most grateful for these. Please contact Jane Haylock on 01473 827752 or jane@theidler.plus.com if you would like more information.

Thanks to the fundraising events of the Hadleigh Thrift Shop; Barbara Boyd, Jean Rampling and their wonderful and supportive Hadleigh Thrift Shop Volunteers and their generous customers, the Hadleigh Thrift Shop have raised funds for Magdalen House Care Home to introduce a Bright Light Therapy Box to our residents in the Rose Perry Dementia Suite. We feel this will be very beneficial to our residents. The Bright Light Therapy Box uses specific wavelengths of light to help treat medical conditions such as anxiety, skin conditions, seasonal affective disorder, enhance a persons sense of night and day and has been known to help support people with dementia. I would also like to add we are also in the process of refurbishing our Day Room, designed with a retro theatre and filled with authentic furniture and memorabilia, somewhere for our residents to come and relax, reminisce and is hoped to get our residents talking about the memories they retain. On Wednesday 15th Jan 2014 LWHS members did the society proud by turning up in force for our member only display of signed art prints by renowned local artist Roger Lane, with around 40 making the evening a huge success. With 24 USAAF 486th Bomb Group related local scenes on view, plus a most interesting display of local wartime photos by our Chairman Dennis Duffy, there really was lots to see and much discussion ensued. The buzz our members created with their lively discussions was then much enhanced with lots of US and British bunting, liquid refreshments and some lovely pastry savories courtesy of Sue Horsley, which were scrummy. With first guests arriving well ahead of the 7.30 start and the last not leaving until after 9.00, it was apparent a very good time was had by all, and testament to the efforts put in by Roger, Dennis, Sue and the rest of the LWHS committee. We now very much look forward to welcoming guests new and old to the LW Parish Room on Wednesday 19th February for our next talk, on Boudica and the Iceni 60-61 AD by local expert Dr Nick Sign, who is Vice-Chairman of the Suffolk Local History Council and Hon. Editor of their journal Suffolk Review. Do come along for what is sure to be another entertaining and informative evening, though it is recommended that you bring along a crash helmet; once Boudica got going, not even the might of the Roman Army in Britain could stop her! If any reader has anything that might be of interest (documents, maps, photos etc) or artefacts pertaining to Little Waldingfield or its residents during the past 200 years, LWHS would love to borrow them for our research; all such documents would be copied carefully and returned promptly. Please refer to our blog pages (http://littlewaldingfieldhistorysociety.wordpress.com/) or the LW website for more information on this exciting project. Andy Sheppard

News from The Station Dear readers, welcome to the latest news from the Station. In January I took part in a multi-agency initiative covering Hadleigh and Pinewood, and the parishes in between. This initiative targeted the use of vehicles on our roads by criminals and saw a number of vehicles taken off the road for varying reasons. In total, 30 vehicles were stopped with 26 of these being dealt with for vehicle related offences. Five were taken off the public roads due to serious safety defects, 2 vehicles seized for no insurance including an HGV and 9 persons and 3 vehicles searched for drug related offences. In addition to this a number of Safer Neighbourhood Team officers carried out patrols in the same area providing crime prevention advice to local residents, particularly around burglary. This resulted in 18 vehicles identified as being left insecure, 6 persons fined/2 speed awareness courses offered/23 persons cautioned for speeding in the community. The operation was a huge success and will be repeated again at some point in the year. In previous articles, I have talked about my intention to run the London Marathon in April 2014. I have now identified my two charities that I will be raising money for. They are The Porch Project and the Special Care Amenity Fund serving the Neonatal Unit at Ipswich Hospital. For those that do not know, the Porch Project is a registered charity that has been set up to support the youth group that operates out of St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. It caters for all young people in the Hadleigh area and has over 300 young people registered, many of which attend one of their bi-weekly sessions. Some of you will remember the impact that the youth club at East House used to have on the young community in Hadleigh, well the Porch offers the same advantages, but takes youth work to another level. The project has grown over the last four years and has had a very positive impact on crime and anti-social behaviour. The work undertaken by the Dean, Youth Worker Craig Hutton and the team of volunteers has built a better level of respect amongst young people, developed relationships and steered some individuals away from a life of crime. The facilities on offer include a fully functioning kitchen, pool tables, various games consoles and the use of a state of the art computer lounge. The Porch Project has big ambitions, and by raising money for them I hope to be able to give the attendees the chance to either enjoy some new equipment, or trips out away from the Church. We now see less reported crime and anti-social behaviour around the Town at weekends, and the parks are generally nicer places to be in compared to how they once were with drunken youths leaving litter and broken glass about. We work very closely with the Porch in order to build better levels of understanding with the Town’s young people and continued support from the community will inevitably see further rewards for the general public. The Neonatal unit (Framlingham Ward) cares for over 500 babies each year at Ipswich Hospital. Many are born premature and require urgent intensive care in order for them to survive; others develop illness or infection and need the expert treatment on offer. The dedication shown by every member of staff is just amazing, and every parent and child admitted to the ward receives nothing but the best care, compassion and empathy. This team of ordinary people carry out an extraordinary job on a daily basis, and if it wasn’t for them some of the babies undoubtedly would sadly not live. My wife and I spent several weeks on the ward when our first child, Isla, was born at 29 weeks. We cannot praise the team enough, and were both shocked to learn just how little funding is available for new equipment, and items such as nappies, cotton wool and blankets. I will be splitting any funds raised in half so that both charities will benefit equally. If you would like to make a donation, please contact me at the Police Station, or visit BT Mydonate and search for me (Matt Paisley). You will note that the donation site is set up for the Porch Project, but in agreement with them, once I have completed the marathon a cheque will be issued for presentation to the Special Care Amenity Fund for 50% of the donations. The Police Station is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s between 1pm and 3pm. You can contact us on the details below, or follow us on Twitter @BaberghPolice. In an emergency, always dial 999. Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net GCSE Examinations Success for Year 11 Pupils The 9th January was an important day for our Year 11 pupils as they received the results they gained in their early entry GCSE English and mathematics (taken in November) as well as the mock examination results for all their other subjects which they took in December. This has been the only year that Hadleigh High School students have taken their English and Maths GCSEs early. Our reason for entering pupils last November was made after the announcement by Ofqual, the body responsible for examinations, informed schools that the GCSE English examination for current Year 11 pupils would be changing. The results for pupils taking the examination in November 2013 would take into account the 20% speaking and listening work which pupils had undertaken in Year 10. But if Year 11 pupils were to take the examination later in the year (in the summer term 2014), the speaking and listening element would not be taken into account. In other words, the rules relating to GCSE English would change half way through the same examination year. We took the decision for Year 11 to take their GCSE English examination early (just 14 months into their GCSE courses) so that they would be able to utilise some of the coursework they had already undertaken in Year 10. We also decided, after the change to grade boundaries in Maths last year, we would also let Year 11 undertake their GCSE Mathematics examination at this time too so that we could use the opportunity to gain feedback about their progress to date and hone their skills for the June 2014 examination. We were pleased that our pupils, parents and staff were willing to rise to this challenge as we are all committed to getting the very best outcomes for pupils in a time of constant change to the examination structure and assessment. Any pupils who do not reach their highest possible target grade would then have the opportunity (if necessary) to retake the new format of examination in June. We are delighted to report that Year 11 pupils have achieved 73% A*-C in English - a 19% increase on the same indicator last year placing our pupils outcomes above the national figures of 2013. We have also been pleased to find that 22% of pupils have achieved an A or A* in English in the November exam. Our Maths results at 59% are in line for the higher expectations we have in the summer when pupils have completed the entire course with a very encouraging 16.4% of pupils gaining an A or A* grade in Maths. Younger pupils have some excellent role models in our Year 11 pupils and should learn from the example they have set through: - Being prepared to take on and meet a challenge - Understanding the relationship between success and hard work - Showing the resilience required to maintain high levels of effort - Utilising the support systems which exist in the school to support pupils' learning - Understanding the revision skills which suit their learning style
Year 11 Mock interviews -You’re Hired! Year 11 pupils have undergone a mock interview which took place on either the 14th or the 21st January. Pupils attended school smartly dressed as if it were a real interview. The interviewer was external to the school and followed the interview by giving feedback on aspects such as presentation, dress, CV and letter quality, performance at interview, etc. Verbal feedback was given immediately and the written feedback was collected by Mrs Thomas and will be used for discussion and development during PSHE lessons.
Get Studying Study club is an after school club designed for all students. It is a place where they can work independently, or with support from staff, to complete any outstanding classwork, homework, coursework or additional study. Study club can also be used as a place to read or revise. In addition to students choosing to attend, staff may also refer students to attend the study club via their form Tutor and Year Learning Leader. Study club is managed by Mrs Youngs in the Learning Support Room on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:50 pm – 3:50 pm.
The Well-Being Room The Well-Being Room has been recently redesigned and modernised. It has been furnished with a sofa, bean bags, graffiti chalk board and a desk. It has several uses within the school; this is a room which is used by students who need a place to go when they feel overwhelmed in a situation or need to have 30

reflection time. The room is managed by the Inclusion Department who are there to support the students. At times, the room is also used by the school nurse, as a meeting room, or as an exam room, alongside many other uses.
Under 13’s Rugby Club The under 13 rugby team are through to the Semi-Final of South England Rugby League. The Semi-Final is on the 29th January against Verulam School in St Albans. If the students reach the final, they are entered into the national open draw final – 16 schools covering England and Wales.
Possible New School Website This year, there may possibly be a new website for Hadleigh High. The website is at early stages of being developed but a mock version has been issued in the Hadleigh Times (which is sent home via students), in which two different prototypes have been attached. Year 10 Geography – Hadleigh’s Explorers The Year 10s have started producing their mock Geography coursework and they travelled down to Hadleigh to collect primary data; some readers may have been interviewed for this! The coursework prepares the students for their real coursework next year, and gets them used to the writing and research style. The Year 10s always aim to exceed their targets, so let’s hope that their coursework results are just as high as they aim!
Sky Sports Living for Sport Project Following the success of last year’s Sky Sports Living for Sport Project, Miss Clarke has signed up 15 Hadleigh pupils from Years 8 and 9 to take part in this highly effective sports project. Fran Williamson, Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor and World Champion and Paralympic Swimmer visited the school on Thursday 16th January sharing the highs and lows of her sporting career and inspiring pupils with her story of success. Fran has gained a vast amount of knowledge and understanding in the world of disability sport which she has been able to share during her day with the pupils at Hadleigh High School. Pupils also participated in class-based and practical activities with Fran, including learning about the six key steps to success, participating in discussions, taking part in team building activities as well as planning for their Sky Sports Project event. Aimed at improving confidence with social interaction, leadership, communication, motivation, and organisational skills, pupils will organise and run a Multi Skills Festival on Monday 3rd February for 80 Year 3 & 4 school children from the eight feeder primaries in the local area. They will also reflect on their successes from their first event and run a second festival in March for much younger pupils. Their efforts and successes will be celebrated in the end of term assembly on Friday 4th April. The pupils involved are; Year 8 Brook Chisnall, Harry Corrie, Katie French, Charlie Kavanagh, Abbie Luderman, Sarah Martin, Olivia Simmons and Barney Williams. Year 9 Ryan Ansell, Eva Clark, Ellise Goodyear, Kiera Hines, Molly Keeble, and Owen Spooner.
Merci Beaucoup! During the term, Juliet – a French University student- is here to help students with their French and pronunciation in MFL lessons. Juliet applied for the job in January and was accepted by the British Council. On the other hand, she is also improving her English skills from the help of the students, she commented: “I love England! Being a teacher and also being a student is great as you get to help someone whilst getting help at the same time. However, I don’t really like the weather!”
Further warnings after five people scammed out of £30,000 Police in Suffolk are urging friends, relatives, carers and neighbours to pass on advice to elderly people they care for after five people have been scammed out of almost £30,000. The ‘elaborate’ scam which is being carried out by con men and women has now hit Suffolk after sweeping across the Metropolitan and Essex Police Force areas. Since August, Suffolk Police has received five reports of virtually identical scams where a person calls their elderly victim, purporting that they are a Police Officer calling from The Met or Essex Police. The ‘Police Officer’ calls the victim telling them they are from the police investigating fraud on their bank account. On occasions they claim to be working for the victim’s bank and they ask for account information including their card number, security number and PIN. Should the resident become suspicious the offender suggests they call 999 or 101 to ask for confirmation the caller is a police officer. The victim then calls the police, but does not realise that the offender has not hung up so goes straight through to them again. In some cases a female offender comes on the line and pretends to be working for the police control room and verifies the so called officer’s details. The caller is then handed back to the original offender who obtains the victims details. In other cases victims have been told a courier will be sent round to collect their bank card or have even been asked to go to their bank to withdraw large amounts of money which is again collected by courier. The latest incident in Suffolk happened yesterday, Monday 16 December. A 62 year old woman living in South Ipswich was duped into withdrawing nearly £4,000 from her bank account which was collected by a courier later that day. Community Safety Manager for Suffolk Police Alan Osborne said: “Fraudsters will try every way possible to scam money out of people and this appears to be one of the latest con tactics they are using.“The police or banks will never ask for people’s bank account details over the phone and should anyone receive this type of call they should hang up immediately. “We are working with banks, building societies and taxi or courier companies to raise awareness of this particular scam but we are keen to stress to those people who have elderly family members or neighbours to spread the word and talk to them about this type of crime. Police are issuing the following advice: • Your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details out. • The police will never call you and ask you to withdraw money from your account to give to a courier or taxi driver, regardless of how convincing they may seem. • If you receive such a call leave the landline for at least five minutes to make an outside call. Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ring tones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number. • Use a friend’s of neighbour’s telephone instead. • Friends, family, carers and neighbours are asked to spread the word to ensure everyone is aware of this scam and what they should do. If you have been a victim call police on 101 or 999 if you are vulnerable and need police assistance – and remember allow your landline to clear for at least five minutes before you call, or ideally use an alternative line.

Porch Project Blog from Craig Happy new year everyone. It's good to be back after a very pleasant Christmas. This year we have so much going on, the project is looking at being used in a number of places across Suffolk so we are working on that as well as our very own Police constable Matt Paisley running the marathon and raising funds for the porch project, Matt commented “I have chosen the Porch Project as one of two charities to support when I run the London Marathon because I believe that the support and opportunities it offers the Town's young people positively reduces crime and anti-social behaviour in Hadleigh. For many years, the young people of Hadleigh have not had a place where they can meet and socialise in a safe location. Having grown up in the Town, I have seen first-hand what happens when there is a lack of facilities for the future generation. The Project helps improve behaviour, build respect and build friendships. Young people can get such a bad press in today's World, but I believe it should be recognised just how important this project is, and I would like to do my bit to increase public awareness of the work the group offers, as well as raising a little bit of money that might help with activities or equipment desperately needed. The Porch Project is actively shaping the next generation, and it is important that it is embraced in the local community and given the opportunity to flourish. So if you would like to support him which would be very much appreciated please just put this link into your computer and donate https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/theporchproject failing that why not pop down to the church and leave some money for him with the church administrator. Sadly before the start of the new year we had some vandalism happen in the church and this has upset a number of people. We do not ask much of people but what we would ask is that if you use the church please do so with respect and courtesy towards others who use it also. We would also like to put it out there for new volunteers, some of our existing volunteers are older and need a break to be honest so it would be so much appreciated if people from the community who are passionate about young people would come forward and volunteer their time it doesn't need to be much at all maybe once a month or once every 2 months, every little helps. To find out more about this then please just contact myself at youthworkco@porchproject.co.uk always happy to hear from you. I hope your 2014 has started well. God bless Craig Hutton, Youth Work Co-Ordinator, Porch Project www.porchproject.co.uk
Blooming Gardens My name is Richard Crockford. My wife and I have recently moved from Yealmpton nr Plymouth, Devon to Hadleigh to be nearer to our new grandchild who lives in London. I am a very experienced gardener and have always enjoyed outdoor work. I have lived and worked a lot of my life in Auckland, New Zealand, mainly working on golf courses as a greenkeeper and gardener. I have been in this country 12 years, this is my home. I enjoy all aspects of gardening including weeding by hand, pruning and lawn mowing to maintain gardens to a high standard. I also power wash paths and driveways. Free quotes and references are available. I am very much looking forward to meeting new local customers and working in this lovely part of the country. News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I am currently thinking about moss in lawns. To produce a perfect lawn is hard work, and I have never had any commitment that my lawns should be perfect. I have been happy to accept a bit of moss, but there are limits, and this year the moss in my lawns has gone mad, and as I walk round Hadleigh it is clear that I am not the only one with this problem. The books all tell you that moss is encouraged by bad drainage, shade, and cutting the grass too short. The only remaining moss killers available to amateurs for lawns are based on Ferrous Sulphate, and sold under various proprietary names. The problem is that they must be applied evenly and at the right strength otherwise you either miss some of the moss, or kill the remaining grass. The moss will turn black and die, and then it needs to be raked up. Do not get moss killer onto paths as the ferrous sulphate will stain the path. To stop the moss coming back the drainage needs to be improved. I have a rake with sharp teeth which given enough effort will rake out the dead stuff and loosen the top surface, and a hollow tyne lawn aerator which will cut neat plugs out of the lawn, which can then be filled with sharp sand. This does not work if you have small bits of flint in your soil which block up the tubes. You can buy or hire mechanical machines to do these jobs, but they are expensive, and if you buy you also need somewhere to store the tool. So the real question is "How much of my lawns can I find the energy to clear the moss from this Spring". Weather Records This month I have the figures to the end of December so I can review 2013. At the end of the year we had had 510.6 mm of rain. This compares with an average annual rainfall of about 660 mm, so it was a dry year with only 77% of average rainfall. The temperatures taken over the year were not unusual. What was unusual was the storms particularly the one on the 27th/28th October. Several people have asked me if I know how strong the gusts were around the time the bus blew over. The trouble is that gusts are very local. The nearest full weather station is at RAF Wattisham. Their data is available on the internet. This shows the peak gust that they measured there as 65 knots (75 mph), but this was not at the time when people felt the gusts were worse in Hadleigh. In December at Kersey there were 60.4 mm (2.4") of rain, which is higher than our average monthly rainfall. This made the 3 month figure 203.7 mm (8") which is 33% more than the average. So the garden soil is still very wet. In December the maximum temperature was 10 Cel (50F), which is what we would expect. The minimum temperature for December was 1 Cel (34F) which is also typical. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 5 Cel ( 44 F), which is slightly warmer than average for mid January. Hints In February conditions for gardening may start to improve so the key thing is to get whatever preparation you can done before everything wakes up with vengeance in March. If the weather permits flower beds can be overhauled, and vegetable beds prepared. It would be good if the various pruning jobs on roses, fruit trees and shrubs could be completed. Do not prune spring flowering shrubs, or plum trees in the Spring. If you grow vegetables you can make a start on seed sowing. I shall be sowing leeks, onions, and broad beans and peas under cover. I have already purchased all the seed that I need, but I need to get my seed potatoes. This year Potato Day at Stonham Barns is on February 8 th 0930 -1330, and Partridges will have a good selection. Happy Gardening, John Rye

Charity makes new year call for support
Established 1974
Helping Hands, which raises money for, and campaigns on behalf of, adults with learning disabilities which attend the Sudbury Community Hub (formerly the Sudbury Resource Centre) needs to replace a number of people who stepped down from its committee during 2013. The charity which has been operational since 1974 - and has supported hundreds of adults with learning disabilities over the years - needs to find around six new committee members to help the organisation survive in the long term Jack Owen, group chair, said: “Due to a number of reasons such as age and other commitments a number of our committee members stepped down during 2013, so at the beginning of the new year we are calling on community minded individuals who may have some spare time to come forward and help our group which makes such an important contribution to the local community.” The charity is also calling on younger people to come forward to join its youth committee, which was launched last year and has been hailed a success. “The youth committee has been a real success, they meet regularly, support the main committee and the young people have taken part and organised a number of community fundraising events. This is an area we are really keen to expand as members of the youth committee will hopefully eventually evolve to the main committee in the years to come. People can learn so much by being involved in voluntary activities such as a range of personal, vocational and organisational skills which will benefit them in their careers and personal lives.” Anyone interested in finding out more about Helping Hands can contact Mr Owen on 01787374025 or by e-mail on unionjack1@talktalk.net. Hadleigh Healing Society So far this winter Mother Nature has thrown many challenges at us with high winds, torrential rain and massive tidal surges. For many people it has been the winter of despair with flooded homes, loss of livelihood and so much more but the British spirit still prevails in the time of hardship. neighbours help each other, complete strangers lend a hand where one is needed. There are still many good people in the world who unselfishly give of their time. Sometimes we all need to be reminded of this fact because we are constantly being bombarded by the press, news media etc of the evil acts perpetrated in the name of freedom of expression, liberty and religion. If you feel you need help to come to terms with your life, share your concerns with our qualified healers in the strictest confidence. we may not have all the answers but it helps to talk about them. Telephone 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log on to www.hadleighhealingsociety.org and we will contact you and make an appointment. We have arranged another Clairvoyant Day on Saturday 8th March 10 am - 4 pm after the outstanding success of previous days and people who were not able to get an appointment. Once I had agreed with Anthony Nolan that I would go to China to collect stem cells for a patient in London requiring an urgent bone marrow transplant, I was told that as it was a human interest story their PR Department would like to impart it to the media. When they made contact, I was initially asked if I could go to Manchester on Saturday 21st December to be interviewed on BBC Breakfast on the 22nd, but I declined as it was too short notice, only one day before I was due to fly to Beijing. As I was one of the members of the Rotary Photo taken on a bus in Club of Hadleigh collecting outside London pre-Olympics to Morrisons on Sunday with our Christmas promote Anthony Nolan float, I was contacted by Anglia TV and BBC Look East who both came to film me and the float and Father Christmas. Then both cameramen, at different times, came to my home to interview me, with the coolbox, showing me packing my case, looking at the Anthony Nolan website, and one even photographed the Chinese visa in my passport! I explained that I had become a courier to collect bone marrow or stem cells because I had lost my first husband through aplastic anaemia in 1980, when the Anthony Nolan Trust (as it was then called) was in its infancy, with only a handful of transplants being carried out. I met my present husband Eddie when he came from Iran in 1986 to be the donor for his brother’s transplant – now alive and well in Iran. Since May 2007 when as a voluntary courier I first started to do overseas trips, I have completed 230. 173 have been to Germany, over 20 to other parts of Europe, and 12 long haul – Sydney, Brisbane, Toronto (two) Boston (two), Providence RI, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Bangkok, HK – and now China. I flew to Beijing by Air China on the afternoon of Monday 23rd December, and arrived on Christmas Eve afternoon, and went by taxi to the Park Plaza Hotel. Christmas Day, of course, is not celebrated in China, although the decorations and lighting on several individual buildings, and in the streets themselves, were very elegant. By using the subway I was able to get to Tiananmen Square, and also a large shopping centre. There is certainly an enormous difference in living standards – on one side of the hotel are showrooms for Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin, and close by every conceivable designer label store , and on the other side, a hutong, the original artisan quarters of the mass of the population. There are still over one thousand of these small networks of narrow alleys and courtyards in Beijing. On Monday 30th December I was overwhelmed to be told that my story had been syndicated to at least 30 regional newspapers from Yorkshire to Wales, and dozens of complimentary comments had appeared on Facebook applauding my decision to spend Christmas on a life-saving mission. Learn to play The Harp
Owith FF
More than 20 years ago I was enticed by an advert which said ‘come and learn to play the most beautiful instrument in the world’. This was not the big gold concert harp which you see in orchestras, but the smaller, more affordable and more portable Celtic, or lever harp. Having become immersed in the world of the harp I am now passing on my love of the instrument through lessons and classes. Prior experience in playing a musical instrument is not essential for attending the beginners’ course. Follow-up classes, and harp hire, or advice on buying a harp, will be available. Tel. SUREFIXSUR REPLACEMENT WINDOWS, DOORS, FASCIAS, SOFFITS AND CONSERVATORIES Hadleigh U13s rugby team made a little bit of Hadleigh Rugby Club history when they won their first Suffolk Cup match against Colchester on Sunday 12 January, the score 20-17. Having won the Suffolk Plate by beating Ipswich YM in the final, Hadleigh are now in the Cup competition against Colchester, Woodbridge and Bury St Edmunds. In their first season as a Youth team, Hadleigh U13 have achieved something that no other Hadleigh youth side has managed before, that is, winning a Suffolk Cup match! The match was a tough encounter, with both sides playing hard and uncompromising rugby. Hadleigh went ahead twice before going behind with ten minutes to go, but Hadleigh's strength of character pulled them through and they scored with three minutes left. There were some excellent performances, notably Harvey Clements (Hadleigh High School) with three tries, Dan Squirrell (HHS) with one. Oscar Farrow, Charlie Kavanagh and Oli Jeeves (all HHS) played heroically, whilst Toby Braybrooke (RHS) and Theo Hymas (Ipswich School) were both resolutely solid in defence and fiercely aggressive in attack. Both teams can be proud of their display in making this a thrilling encounter. Hadleigh now go on to play Woodbridge in the next round on 2nd February.

Babergh Chairman’s Charity Cash
AINGER HOLBROWS LTD
Two Charities will be £6,500 better off thanks to the fundraising efforts of Babergh District Council’s Chairman. Cllr Nick Ridley has represented the Brook Ward for the last ten years and was reappointed in April 2013 as Chairman of Babergh District Council. The Chairman's chosen charities are the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at Treetops, Ipswich and St Nicholas Hospice, Bury St Edmunds. They will have the £6,500 split between them. Cllr Ridley said: "Both of these charities are dear to my heart. Treetops is a wonderful new facility in Suffolk opened by HRH the Duchess of Cambridge and St Nicholas Hospice, which continues to improve and extend its service to West Suffolk residents, both providing much needed support for patients and families suffering extreme illness. The Hospice movement is still comparatively young in the UK, but we in Suffolk can be proud that, thanks to the most generous support from the community it has been possible to open and maintain these marvellous facilities, and I am very pleased to be able to support them in a small way with these two donations." Cllr Ridley continued: "Both organisations are prime examples of what dedicated volunteers and staff can inaugurate and support. "Without both of these Charities the community would suffer; every single penny raised will help someone who genuinely needs it.” Cllr. Ridley added: “Both Hospices do enormous good for the people of the district and were founded through the great efforts of several single-minded individuals and I am delighted to be able to support them with this money." The money was raised as a result of the Chairman's Civic Reception held in July and an Advent Civic Service in December, and, as a trustee of the Lord Belstead Charitable Trust, Cllr. Ridley had been able to top up the £750 for each Charity raised on his two events with a further £2,500 each from the Trust. On the 20th and 21st January Cllr. Ridley will present cheques for £3,250 to each of the two Charities.
