A standing ovation for Alice
Alice Barlow received a standing ovation at a special reception to celebrate another year of county and national success by members of Newton Green Golf Club. The 18-year-old has swept all before her in Suffolk women’s golf. She also became the first winner of England Golf’s junior girl champion of champions’ trophy, as well as finishing seventh in the Telegraph BMW Junior Championship in Portugal. Alice was among both junior and senior golfers receiving congratulations from guest of honour, Suffolk Men’s Golf Union president Phil Platten. Newton’s moderate success for several decades at county level had seldom merited a special celebration – now it is four years in a row. The event was hosted by Ian Woodhead. During the evening club women’s captain Sally Cade paid tribute to the qualities of commitment, determination and effort that had contributed to the success of Alice Barlow, including winning Suffolk adult and junior titles at match and stroke play. She had also formed with Eloise Aldous an “awesome pair” as they regained the Suffolk Haskell Trophy. Club professional Tim Cooper reviewed the club’s success at junior level, including Alice Barlow, Ben Tatum and Harvey Watts winning the Suffolk team championship and going on to represent the county in the national final, where they finished seventh. On behalf of England Golf, he presented Watts with a certificate for a hole in one during the competition. Also present during the evening was the club’s Parks Trophy team which had never previously passed the first round, but reached the final. Meanwhile, six- handicapper Ben Tawell won the Dick Burn Eastern Region Golf Club Managers Association trophy, and Tim Cooper was runner up in the Suffolk PGA match play league, semi-finalist in the match play knock-out and third in the order of merit.

After months of hard work, Lin Slaughter finally had the opportunity to offer the results to the public just in time for Christmas. Her hand crafted gifts and Christmas decorations were attractively displayed at Walter Wrights’ in the hope of tempting High Street shoppers to part with their money for her chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. Business was brisk from mid-morning to early afternoon as many visitors were already familiar with Lin’s creations. They had come to replenish their own dwindling stock of handmade Christmas gifts and also Lin with her cheque for see if Lin had any new ideas on offer. Macmillan Cancer Support Judging by the final takings from the sale and the raffle, few people went away empty handed. There certainly wasn’t much for Lin to take home and she was delighted and touched by everyone’s generosity. When the takings were finally counted the total came to £650.00. Macmillan Cancer Support will be presented with a cheque for that amount. Lin would like to thank Accountants Walter Wright for the use of their premises, her helpers and all the folks who gave their support on the day.

Fresh air and exercise at Orchard Barn
Have you been considering improving your health and fitness? Taking out gym membership or joining a sports group are two of ways of doing this. Another possibility is the green gym, getting involved in a variety of physical tasks outdoors on a regular basis. At Orchard Barn, volunteers are never sure what they’ll be doing on any particular day but know that even on the coldest of days they’ll soon be warm and feeling more cheerful. Some of the more strenuous activities such as mixing cob for clay lump block or digging clay out of ditches need to be done in short spells at first. Other tasks such as hedge-laying need a more considered approach but still involve some strength. Pushing a wheelbarrow may sound uninteresting but, when there is a wealth of wildlife to see, the effort becomes less noticeable. And at the end of the day you will have an inner warm, feel pleasantly tired and will be able to see something that you’ve helped to create for the benefit of others. Want to join the Orchard Barn green gym? It’s free! Our website is orchardbarn.org.uk or contact us on 01473 658193 or 07766 054042

Good news - despite taking longer than we had hoped, our renovations are now virtually complete and though we say it ourselves, the Shop is looking good - bright, clean and fresh, altogether more spacious and inviting. All that remains to be done is to paint the exterior of the Store Room to match the Suffolk pink of the Shop, plus one or two minor interior adjustments in the Shop itself. Our grateful thanks go to the many tradespeople and helpers who have helped us reach this point. We had hoped to celebrate our latest ‘new look’ while the weather was warm enough to spill over outside. Unfortunately this was not possible, so we intend to have an event as soon as is feasible next spring, when it is a little warmer. Watch out for further details in the New Year. With the new display shelving that has been purchased, we are now able to carry a wider range of stock than in the past, but as usual, we welcome suggestions to further widen our provision. NEW TO US: A range of jams and pickles from ‘The Jam Shed’, which is already selling well and getting excellent feedback. (Sadly, we are no longer able to stock our ‘Mrs. Bennett’ range, as she has closed her business). ‘The Farmer’s Wife’ range of frozen home-made pies, made in Stoke-by-Nayland. There are twenty-four different choices available to us if these prove popular. We now carry a large selection of Post Office packaging padded envelopes and cartons. Our sales of Daphne’s cakes & pastries are booming, we are now proud to be her largest retailer. Do ask if you want to place any special orders at any time during the year. If you have not visited us before, do come and have a browse around; you will be surprised at what you find and may also wish to stay for a cup of tea or coffee. We wish you all a very Happy New Year

Bike Ride in Memory of Suffolk Police Officer
Two young men from Suffolk, Jason Bullard and Aaron Durrant have recently visited the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre at Ipswich Hospital to present Macmillan Cancer Support with a kind donation of £1375. The pair decided to fundraise in support of Ruth Finbow, who having received the “all clear” from breast cancer, heard the devastating news of a second diagnosis. Ruth was a retired Police Officer who lived in Hintlesham and had previously served in several villages in the Hadleigh and Ipswich area. Jason and Aaron decided to complete a 101 mile bike ride, using bicycles from the 1900’s, to include all the villages where Ruth had worked during her career with the Suffolk Constabulary. The challenge took the boys across the county on a tight schedule, they planned to be back at the Community Hall in Hintlesham, for a celebration of music, karaoke, and a raffle. Hundreds of people turned up on the day to show their support. Unfortunately, Ruth passed away before the event, but the boys still carried on with the help of Steph Coupland and Doug Finbow to make the day a fitting tribute to this much loved and missed member of the community. The whole day and evening was a great success. A grand total of £3,309.00 was raised, to be split between the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre and Cancer Research UK. The donation to Macmillan will cover the cost of a Chemotherapy Treatment Chair in the new Woolverstone Macmillan Centre at Ipswich Hospital. More than twice as many people than ever before can now receive their treatment at any one time. The new centre features spacious treatment suites, gardens, quiet rooms and facilities for loved ones. It is expected that around 21,000 people will use this innovative and specialist centre for cancer services every year. In honour of Ruth, the village will also place a bench outside of the Community Hall, where Ruth was Secretary of the Social Club.Helen Glenholmes, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said “I cannot thank Aaron and Jason enough, for coming up with such a special way to support our new cancer centre in memory of Ruth. We still need to fundraise to cover the cost of this £4.7 million facility, and we would never have come this far without the kind generosity of communities across Suffolk. We must say a huge thank you to our supporters in Hintlesham for making this wonderful gift” For information on fundraising for the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre, as a business, group or individual, call 0300 1000 200 or visit www.macmillan.org.uk/fundraising

Boxford Drama Group has invited those lovely ladies from the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society back for their March production. So if you enjoyed their previous ventures on the Boxford Village Hall stage in ‘The Haunted Through Lounge and Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale Castle’ and ‘The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery’ then you’ll simply love their latest production entitled ‘Chase Me Up Farndale Avenue, S’il Vous Plait’. The Farndale ladies latest production, set in Paris, has all the ingredients of a classic farce featuring a delicious French maid, a plumber, the secretary, the mistress, husbands and wives but not necessarily married to each other, the lovers tryst, some dodgy dealings, plenty of doors, a hoover with a mind of its own, and let’s not mention the accordion! Confusion reigns as everyone tries to keep track of who is married to who, who is having an affair and with whom, who is in the kitchen with the decorator, who stole the occasional table and exactly where is the painting of the Laughing Cavalier? What could possibly go wrong……………apart from collapsing furniture, forgotten lines, miss-timed sound effects and general am-dram mishaps and mayhem for which those Farndale ladies are famous for. This hilarious comedy, written by David McGillivray & Walter Zerlin jnr, will be on at Boxford Village Hall on 30th, 31st March and 1st April 2017. Tickets will be available from Boxford Post Office from 25th February 2017

New £250,000 Technogym launched at Peake Fitness by original founder members from 1999!
GSOIBBON S LICI TORS Howard at The Orwell Hotel Felixstowe
Kate Charlton Jones and Roger Toone cut the ribbon in Peake Fitness, with Peake Fitness Manager Chris Grimwood (between them), fellow members and staff.
Peake Fitness, the health and fitness club at the award-winning, family-owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa complex, has just re-opened with its exciting new £250,000 ground breaking Technogym equipment. This is now the first fully-integrated gym of its kind in the UK! Cutting the ribbon at the launch party on 5th December were two founder members of the club, Kate Charlton Jones and Roger Toone, who joined in 1999 when it originally opened. Kate remembered, “Seventeen years ago I walked into Peake Fitness for the first time and what took my breath away – and still does – was the view. You cannot find exercise tedious when the surroundings are so magical - the lake and the trees changing with the seasons are an enormous boost to energy and imagination. I am very excited about the fabulous new equipment - It will be sure to revitalise our programmes! Roger said: “I have the pleasure and privilege of being a member of Peake Fitness since 1999. When it opened then we were handed a glass of champagne and a commemorative tee shirt which I still treasure. Peake Fitness has always provided me with a warm and welcoming environment for keeping fit, and I hope to be a member for another 17 years! To compare the gym equipment of 1999 with this amazing Technogym range today is the equivalent of comparing your old land line to your latest mobile – I can’t wait for my new induction!” Demonstrating the club’s commitment to provide its members with the ultimate in top of the range equipment and the best possible customer experience, Peake Fitness has replaced both its Excite Cardio and Bio Strength Resistance ranges with Technogym’s premium range: ARTIS CARDIO & ARTIS STRENGTH. The gym has also upgraded its exercise management software solution from the iconic Wellness System to Technogym’s latest digital platform: MY WELLNESS CLOUD which offers limitless solutions to data tracking, exercises and workouts for each of its consumers. ARTIS, with MY WELLNESS CLOUD, is the world’s first ever fully integrated collection of cardio, strength and functional gymnasium equipment, and Peake Fitness at Stoke by Nayland is the first site in the UK to host this system with Technogym’s latest console UNITY MINI. Chris Grimwood, Peake Fitness Club Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be continuing our 17 year long relationship with Technogym UK and believe that this system is by far the most superior, fully integrated equipment on the market – our members are certainly in for a treat!” More information can be found on the website at www.stokebynayland.com/membership/leisure-membership or by calling Peake Reception on 01206 265820/822 or Mary Saward on 01206 265841 and email mary.saward@stokegolfandleisure.com

Hello my dear readers. As you cast your eye down my column with trepidation, the Joy of Christmas will be fading. Your Christmas baubles will be twinkling for the last time. Your Yuletide log will be but a shadow of its former self withered and exhausted. Why not cheer yourself up and arrange to come to see me to fulfil those New Year’s Resolutions. Yes, it is time to make your new Wills and with the Property Nil Rate Band for Inheritance Tax arriving in April you do really need to be getting your testamentary affairs in order. Everyone should also have a Lasting Power of Attorney so that your financial arrangements can continue even if there is an unforeseen occurrence leaving you without mental capacity. On the brighter side, you could be buying or selling a house or taking a lease of a shop. Take advantage of my thirty years of experience. Before my housekeeper, Maria, met my chauffeur Frank she was besotted with her then husband. Unfortunately, he came to a sticky end when he tripped over a coconut on a beach in the Seychelles. They did though have a son Thomas Dinsdale who is a good friend of mine and appears in the picture taken at The Orwell Hotel in Felixstowe. Thomas is an excellent photographer. Indeed, my Christmas card which was sent to some two hundred of my closest friends featured a great portrait of me. The Orwell Hotel at the foot of Beatrice Avenue in Felixstowe is really worth a visit. There is an excellent Sunday lunch when the piano plays, a dessert trolley and such like. Lunches and dinners during the week are excellently priced. I know that many of you are owner drivers and do not have a chauffeur, (how contemporary), so you can take to the trunk roads. You will all know how much I enjoy my annual visit to The Christmas Show at Thursford near Fakenham in Norfolk. The Cambridges tell me (via the Hello Magazine) that they were there again this year with their children. I was accompanied by The Lord of the Manor of Polstead, Alan Keeble and Susan Keeble. Our Number One motor car was soon soiled with road grime as Frank piloted us through the dark and mist of Thetford Forest. We had a wonderful tea in front of a cosy fire at The Chequers Inn Front Street Binham (01328 830297) which is just a few miles from Thursford itself. As we entered through the gates of Thursford we were waved past the hoi polloi to the front door and took our seats as the curtain rose. A cast of hundreds, the Wurlitzer organ, a band and orchestra. Celebrating forty years this is rightly a “World Class” show and the finest of its type in Europe. Happy New Year, Howard Gibbons

The Cinnamon Trust
The Cinnamon Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis and named after her pet corgi, Cinnamon. It is a national registered charity which supports older people and those with a terminal illness in caring for their pets. A national network of 18,000 volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner or cleaning out a cage for someone with a disability. A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited. The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. Arrangements are made between owners and the Trust well in advance, if possible, so owners have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Emergency cards are available on request. I have many years' experience of caring for pets and have recently been accepted as a volunteer for the Trust, covering Hadleigh and surrounding villages. If you would like any support or information would you please in the first instance contact the main office number on 01736 757900 and they will pass referrals to me. Suzanne Fox

Long Melford Swan makes a splash with Duck Deli concept
One of Long Melford’s most innovative pubs has launched another exciting new concept with the opening of its own delicatessen. The Swan at Long Melford has a history of groundbreaking ideas and its latest is to make for sale some of the best products used within the dishes served in its restaurant at ‘Duck Deli’. The Deli held a grand opening on 13 December at the pub, leased from Greene King, and, in time for Christmas, has put together a range of hampers to buy. The hugely popular Long Melford Swan opened in 2011 as Stuart Inns’ first venture with the company also operating the Hadleigh Ram and Lavenham Greyhound. All three businesses are owned by the Macmillan family, Andrew Macmillan, daughter Lorna Pissarro and sons Oliver and Iain Macmillan. Marketing Director for Stuart Inns, Lorna Pissarro said: “By making available food and drink from the same suppliers we use ourselves we feel we are giving people the chance to take home a little part of what they enjoy so much while at the pub. “We are really excited by the potential for ‘Duck Deli’ which is full of foodie delights. For years customers have told us they want to try the delicious products we use in their own dishes.” Clive Chesser, managing director of Greene King Pub Partners, said: “The Long Melford Swan has an outstanding reputation locally and at Greene King we always look to support pubs who want to innovate. “Duck Deli looks fantastic with an outstanding range of products on offer and this shows what can be achieved when a pub looks beyond the usual parameters and thinks about what would really excite customers.” ‘Duck Deli’ is one of several recent changes at the Long Melford Swan including the introduction of a garden dining room, three boutique bedrooms, and a new chef’s pantry. The latter has a special chef’s table, a dining experience positioned deliberately close to the kitchens so that the chefs can introduce the dishes as they are served. www.duckdeli.co.uk 01787 464545

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk
At the last general election, when I stood for election as your MP for the first time, my top commitment was to campaign for ‘opportunities for young people’. What does this mean and why is it so important? It’s about ensuring young people can flourish in South Suffolk, rather than feeling that the only option after completing their studies is a long commute to the ‘big smoke’. And it’s also about recognising that we will face a demographically unsustainable future if the balance between young and old in our local communities becomes tilted entirely in the more senior direction of things. This is not to complain about the trend for living longer – this is one of the great achievements of the modern era, and who wouldn’t want to live to a ripe old age? Nor is this about ‘inter-generational’ tensions. On the contrary, it was striking for me that concern for today’s young was one of the biggest topics on the doorstep when I spoke to many older residents on the election trail. Frankly, it is in all our interests that every generation has the chance to contribute to their maximum potential. If we are to afford the growing cost of pensions and social care, we need a strong and thriving economy – and that in turn requires a workforce with the best possible education and skills. The good news is that we are making real progress in Suffolk, after previously lagging behind in education terms. Latest figures show that 85% of Suffolk’s schools are good or outstanding and this should get even better with the longawaited confirmation of ‘fairer funding’. For so long our schools have received less money compared to schools in better funded areas. So in December the Government announced a new single, national formula to deliver fairer funding in practice. It’s complex to assess the impact of the changes, and there will be a long transition to ensure better funded schools do not suffer adversely. Nevertheless, an initial look at the data suggests South Suffolk will do relatively well. For every one of us, that should be very welcome indeed.
The SOLAR Revolution
The uptake of solar panels across the UK has been so dramatic, that from April to September 2016, more of the UK’s power was generated by solar than coal for the first time. So what is driving the solar revolution? Well there are three things that have had a major impact; the Government’s generous incentive scheme, a desire to reduce domestic energy bills and a greater awareness of the environment. The government needs 15% of electricity to come from renewables like solar by 2020 in order to meet their renewable energy target. Instead of spending a huge amount of money to build and generate all this themselves, they’ve figured out a much cheaper and quicker way — incentivise UK homeowners to do it for them. Under the UK government’s feed-in tariff program, electricity companies must pay customers for all the electricity their solar panels produce. Electricity is not cheap and prices are always going up. With a huge energy demand and a national energy crisis, the upward trend is set to continue. However, if you have a solar PV system, all the electricity you produce, you can have free of charge and so you can dramatically slash your energy bills. In some cases these savings could be huge. The renewable targets have been set in order to combat global warming and the reduction of carbon use is key. All the clean electricity that you generate will be used and so reduce carbon. You are not only cutting your own carbon footprint, but you are also helping the planet. Hadleigh’s Energy on Tap Limited offer a complete solar installation service at a sensible price. We use the best products with 20 year warranties. We can design systems for any roof or even for garden buildings / structures. If you are interested in joining the solar revolution, then give Mark a call at Energy on Tap Limited, 07780 975787.

Welcome back everyone and a happy new year to you all! Did you have a good Christmas? I hear the volunteers had a bit of a shindig at the end of last term, and that our carol service in Shelley Church was very special. Babs and I have to miss out on that sort of thing, so we know how you feel if you weren’t being festive, either. I did see some sights though: our humans make a big effort to decorate the stables and impart some comedy into the end of term rides. Pictured are three suspects by the arena, John, Sue and yes, Louise, she really does have a knitted turkey on her head! A word about the Management Committee: we have trustees looking after the business side of the Centre, seeing that we work to the highest possible standard, obey the law, provide accounts to be vetted, and look after the people, ponies AND me, the simulator. Like all small charities they have had to learn how to do this in addition to the voluntary work they all took on with such excitement and enthusiasm, It is quite a learning curve for amateurs. So I’m speaking for the herd and our riders when I say thank you to them all. I’m also wondering if there are retired people in the Hadleigh area who like corporate business and miss it enough to come and join the Management Team to share their expertise with us? You could stay well away from horses if that’s your preference, but of course I should like to meet you and show off my paces! So keep warm, keep working, and count your blessings folks; I’ll be back again in February with more news of our riders and their amazing achievements, and hopefully some news of new members of the herd. Older people living alone urged to take care in the cold weather
A manager from a care home in Hadleigh is today urging older people living alone in the community to take extra care in the cold weather. With temperatures expected to drop across the country, Irene Worsdell, from Anchor’s Canterbury House care home in Gallows Hill will be taking extra steps to ensure that her staff and residents are staying warm and staying safe this winter. Irene said risks of falling among older people are high in the cold weather. She said: “Anchor is urging the wider community to keep a close eye on elderly neighbours and their older relatives who may live alone and are more vulnerable in the cold weather. “We recommend older people have regular hot drinks and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps to keep up energy levels during winter. “Wrap up warm and wear several light layers of warm clothes. Wear footwear with a good grip if you need to go outside on cold days, and take extra care if you go out. “Anchor has produced its free Getting Ready for Winter guide which gives lots of advice as well as covering such topics as getting a winter flu jab and cold weather payments.” The free Getting Ready for Winter guide can be downloaded here: http://guides.anchor.org.uk/GettingReadyforWinter

Movie Evening:- Opening with clip from Casablanca with Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart was a perfect start to speaker Mark Mitchels’ absorbing talk on Movie History. He deftly traced the industry’s progression from silent to talkies using hand flicked cards to present day techniques with screened examples of each. Members were able to relive the days of Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Judy Garland and Errol Flynn to name just a few. Most movie genres were represented from early propaganda footage to westerns with John Wayne. Finishing with the iconic watery street scene with Gene Kelly ‘Singing in The Rain’ was the perfect way to end a most informative, enjoyable evening with a difference. Christmas Supper: Wearing their best bib and tucker members thoroughly enjoyed an early seasonal supper before turkey fatigue set in. Cheryl Salisbury and her band of helpers served a delicious two course meal in the Hadleigh Dining Room. Each diner received a decorated miniature kilner jar which Lin Slaughter had hand decorated and filled with chocolates to go with their coffee. Liz Wilson thanked Cheryl and barman Steve Laing for their contribution to the evening. The evening closed with a reading, by Jan Devey, of the humorous version of The Twelve Days of Christmas followed by her take on the EU referendum. This concluded with a toast to both the ‘ins’ and the’ outs’. Winter Lights:- After months of waiting, fifty members and their visitors finally made it to the Winter Lights at Anglesey Abbey. Happily the wait was well worthwhile. After a ‘one pot’ meal in the National Trust’s large café/restaurant the group ventured into the darkness to find the illuminations. The trail is well defined and initially the lighting is quite low key. However, along the way this becomes more creative, ambitious and spectacular. Statues, art work and even the Mill and Abbey are all subtly lit to show them at their best. Although the weather was very mild ladies were happy to take advantage of the Gluhwein and hot chocolate stands which are strategically placed near an ‘entertainment’ and rest spot. In spite of tickets sales topping 18,000 this year, it was busy but comfortable throughout the venue. Having spent the evening in this magical setting, the trees enroute to Hadleigh seemed very ordinary. The Nutcracker:- A small group of ballet lovers escaped the Christmas frenzy to enjoy the more magical setting of The Nutcracker. This delightful ballet was beamed in live from the Royal Opera House, London, to Cineworld, Ipswich. It was a sumptuous, colourful performance with an enormous number of dancers from The Royal Ballet and its School. Pure joy and escapism.
Surviving Winter In Hadleigh (And 12 Surrounding Villages)
We express our thanks for two generous donations in December; the donors wish to remain anonymous. Our thanks also to those people who took part in our Christmas Draw. All donations and proceeds will be devoted to the pursuance of our declared aim which is: “The relief of financial hardship and promotion of good health of people living in and around Hadleigh, Suffolk, by the provision of supplies such as blankets, clothing, flasks, hot water bottles and similar supplies, assisting in the purchase of fuel and meeting the cost of call-outs or emergency repairs to heating systems to enable people to keep warm over winter.” We have no restrictions on age, disability or whether in receipt of benefit of any kind. If you have a problem or know of someone who has difficulty in keeping warm as a result of constant low winter temperatures we will do all we can to give you or them our support. To date we have already helped many people. We did some research before we started and found that much of the government winter fuel allowance is not used by many of the recipients for the pupose for which it was intended so please consider donating some of it to our cause.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029
Here we are, at the start of another year and another diet for some of us. Hope my canine readers had a more satisfactory festive season than an acquaintance of mine. Stollen fruits were not the sweetest when the poor fellow was caught devouring a chunk of the German delicacy under the table. Amateurs! As SESAW's Chief Table Swiper, I advised 'Sugar Face' to find an accomplice quick, he obviously needs help if he wants to have his cake and eat it! Before all thoughts of Christmas fade away, we would be glad of any unwanted presents for our raffles. May I also ask you to remember us if you have any spare wool, fabric or craft materials? This is for our talented volunteers who are busy knitting, sewing and creating handmade items for our Easter Fair at Whatfield Village Hall in April. (See photo of me with an over friendly monkey!) If you have anything that might be of use please pop it in a bag, clearly marked “CRAFT MATERIALS and phone 01473 652080 or leave it at the Sanctuary any morning. Like all the contributors, I wrote this early so Kelvin could put the magazine to bed and enjoy the festive season too. Consequently, I don’t know what animals have come in but you can easily find out. We are open again so if you have resolved to share your home with a new pet, have a look at our website or visit us 10-1pm Thursday-Sunday. Meanwhile, I’m on a mission to retrieve some tasty digestive biscuits someone must have left on the kitchen table for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 9 Lectures starting on Thursday 12th January 2017 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. One of the great events of global history, the Russian Revolution, changed the shape of the contemporary world at great cost to the Russian people. This course will study the causes of the revolution, the reasons for the October coup (1917), and seek to explain why Lenin and the Bolsheviks were able to win a Civil war and secure power against all the odds. Our lecturer Simon Doney is a local lecturer in Further and Higher Education and has taught classes for the WEA over a number of years. Fees: Adult £48 (payable after the first session). I wanted to use this column to wish everyone a happy and peaceful new year, and also to try to ring some changes for the better. I particularly wanted to thank the people of the 18 villages of Cosford who voted in the county council election back in 2013 and enabled me to come a close second to the Conservative candidate - the first time a Green Party candidate has done so in this corner of Suffolk. This coming May, you will again have a chance to choose a county councillor and I am again standing for Cosford and I look forward to hearing the views of as many residents as possible on the doorstep. I live in Bildeston with my wife and two children where I run a smallholding and a small business consultancy. I'm standing again because I think it is important that residents here have an independent voice to speak out for them. Unfortunately, the Conservatives who run the county council have spent their time pushing for a new tier of Mayoral government that no one asked for while completely failing to get the badly needed traffic-calming measures to villages that have asked for them. But I take heart from the people in many of the villages of this beautiful part of Suffolk who have stood up for their communities and what they believe in. In Bildeston, the parish council and residents are in the midst of a legal challenge to the government and Babergh district’s planning policies for new houses which seem to put developer profit above residents’ need. In Lavenham, villagers have all had a say in their own neighbourhood plan and have set an example to the District Council by seeking to build new, affordable and wellinsulated homes using a community land trust. I was privileged to be a Babergh District councillor between 2014 and 2015 representing the south part of Cosford where the villages of Whatfield, Nedging and Elmsett also did what they could to meet genuine local need for affordable homes. If elected again, I pledge to back any community that is trying to support genuine community needs. Yours in peace, Robert Lindsay, Green Party candidate for Cosford in the county council elections

What’s on at the Museum of East Anglian Life
‘Life Through the Eyes of East Anglian Artists’ – Art Exhibition
On until 11th March (please note change of date) Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 4pm, entrance is free. This popular exhibition features paintings, drawings, and watercolours by well-known 19th and 20th century artists from our region; many of which have never been publicly displayed before. The pictures will be complemented by artefacts from the Museum collection to connect what we see with how we live now and in the past. Lisa Harris, Collections and Interpretation Manager says, “The exhibition will cover farming and country life including harvest and the wool trade, as well as taking a look at the coastal economy and transport in the countryside. Some of the artists may be familiar such as John Moore, Arthur James Stark and brothers Thomas and Edward Robert Smythe from the nineteenth century and the drawings of twentieth century artists Anna Airy and Harry Becker. All have connections with East Anglia and the works have been selected to illustrate the living and working conditions of local people. The subjects of the paintings are brought to life by objects from the collection of the Museum of East Anglian Life, including shepherd’s clothing, farm implements and domestic necessities.” The works that feature in this exhibition are selected from the private collection of the late Harold Day, author of many books on East Anglian Art, who began collecting in the early 1960’s. Many of the oil paintings are presented in their original frames and most have never been on public display before. This Exhibition represents a unique opportunity to see these beautiful pictures in the historic Abbots Hall, alongside examples of the real life objects found in them, selected from the Museum of East Anglian Life’s own Collection.

S the Brendan Oakes Trust and Thank You from the Alison Fracella Research Trust
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Ansell Centre on Saturday 19th November to give us such fantastic support at what was our 5th joint Quiz Night. We once again had a packed house for the event and everyone said what an amazing evening it was with lots of fun and laughter. We seem The Winning Team to have found a winning formula with our ploughman’s supper too! On the night, after expenses, we raised an amazing £1,032 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. A huge thank you to Kelvin Avis for printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Special thanks to Sue and Roy for all their hard work and also to Paul and Maria and to Carol and Neil. Many thanks also to the people who were so generous in their donations of the many fantastic raffle prizes too numerous to mention. A huge thank you to Orwell Lady Cruises, to Hadleigh Tyres to Brett Vale Golf Club, to the Hadleigh Ram and to the Lavenham Beauty Gallery. It would be fantastic to see everyone again next year! Please save the date- Saturday 25th November 2017! Thank you again to everyone who gave us such very generous support Sue and Rob Kettlewell and Val and Mark Oakes

Calling all artists! The Easter Art Trail is coming!
Members of Lavenham Church have organised an exciting event that will take place this coming Easter. Designed to be a community event that will attract all artists, whether amateur or professional, and especially children, the ‘trail’ will be made up from artwork based on the Easter story, along the lines of suggested ‘themes and scenes’, to be provided. The idea is to interpret the Easter stories using any medium - and to be as creative as you like! The overall size should not exceed 15½” x 11½” or 394mm x 292mm, which is roughly A3, as selected work will be framed and displayed to these dimensions. The trail will take place from 1st – 13th April, and a number of entries will be selected for display inside, or in the windows of, the various village shops, restaurants, and businesses. People interested in following the trail can collect trail maps from a variety of locations in the village, including the Church, Heeks, tourist office, the Guildhall or the library, and then follow the artwork trail. The idea is that as people follow the route, they vote for their two favourite pieces of artwork – one from the adult category and the other from the under 16s. Votes can then be ‘cast’ at the locations distributing the trail maps, and yours could be the winning vote in a free prize draw that will take place at the close of the event. The two pieces of artwork receiving the highest number of votes will be printed onto greetings cards, which will then be sold to raise funds for Lavenham pre-school. At the end of the village trail, all entries will be exhibited in Lavenham church from 15th – 22nd April. If you would like to take part, please note the closing date for entries is 27th February 2017. Entries should be clearly labelled, with name, contact details, and age if under 16, plus the title of the work, and delivered to Pete Postle, 7 Hall Road, Lavenham CO10 9QU - or if you would like your work collected, then let us know. For further details, including a list of ‘scenes and themes’, please contact Lynda – 01787 313769 or email: lynda@sebbage.com We are enormously grateful to Cllr Jenny Antill, who has kindly awarded us Suffolk County Council locality funding to help towards this event and to Lavenham Parish Council who have also assisted us financially.

For you and your family it’s got to be Gotelee Solicitors
Christmas can be a pretty stressful time, whether it’s worries over money, getting the “right” present, or who’s hosting who’s family, Christmas can certainly highlight and amplify any strains on a relationship. These kinds of stresses can lead to the unfortunate demise of a relationship and it’s a fact that separation and divorce enquiries with Solicitors peak in the weeks after Christmas. The Family Mediation Helpline claims that two million couples will contemplate divorce during the Christmas holidays. A relationship breakdown can be distressing and even more so if family problems involve children and finances. Divorce might not be something that you are looking for immediately but it’s important to be protected when you separate. Taking legal advice at an early stage can avoid difficulties later on, particularly if there are discussions about who occupies the property, whether assets should be sold and divided and what arrangements for any children are agreed. If you are separating, it may be worth considering mediation. This involves agreeing children arrangements and financial settlements for couples who are separating or divorcing. How can Gotelee Solicitors Family Lawyers help you? Our team of lawyers have many years of experience between them to ensure that you receive appropriate advice and practical support during this difficult time, no matter what your situation. This will include advice on all kinds of problems resulting from a breakdown of a relationship, how to get divorced, the myths, the timescale and cost and the implications for financial arrangements and also any children’s arrangements. Gotelee Solicitors can offer an initial fixed price meeting Jane Fowles to provide you with an understanding of the options available, likely costs and outcomes. Our Solicitors listen and will understand the problem. Our Solicitors have acted for a wide spectrum of clients whose relationships have broken down, so if a difficult situation gets heated and you need help and advice quickly, we’ll be right there by your side. What’s more, we’re local, and able to see you in any of our offices in Ipswich, Felixstowe, Hadleigh, Melton and Woodbridge. You can also call us on 01473 822102 or email jane.fowles@gotelee.co.uk for more information on the matter

We are bombarded by clever advertising everywhere we go and subconsciously respond to it, especially when it’s food related. This is never more apparent than at Christmas. Here’s some simple tricks to avoid over-eating subconsciously: • Use smaller plates and serving utensils. • You’ll drink less in a tall slim glass instead of a chunky one. • Eat at the table whenever possible - eating while watching TV means we eat 40% more! • Put all leftovers away in the fridge and don't have a box of chocs nearby while you're watching TV – they will get eaten purely out of habit! • Save some for later - you don’t have to try everything at once and you’ll enjoy it more. By being aware of these things you will naturally eat less without feeling deprived. Allow yourself to enjoy your food – but stop eating as soon as you’re satisfied – it takes 20 minutes for the brain to register that you’re full so take a breather before having more pudding! Cambridge Weight Plan has recently launched 2 fabulous new products – Thai Style Chicken Curry to add to our “real food” range and a delicious Apple and Strawberry Yoghurt coated bar – both contain around 200 calories and 2533% of your daily nutritional needs. If 2017 arrives and you’ve still got some excess weight to lose why not try Cambridge Weight Plan to retrain your eating habits for a healthy New Year..! Cambridge Weight Plan (now in its 33rd year) has 6 steps designed to enable you to lose weight, and shows you how to make long-term changes to maintain a slim and healthy life. Average weight loss is a stone a month*. Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has 8 years’ experience. It seems Rainy Days are here to stay
With 4 of the 5 wettest years on record happening since the year 2000 it seems that rainy days are here to stay. Gutters and downpipes that do not have the sufficient capacity to remove rainwater are liable to overflow and in older properties this can lead to water entering the fabric of the building. Deep flow guttering increases the capacity of the guttering on your property by up to 100% reducing the need for additional down pipes and preventing overflowing gutters. Hadleigh based Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to supply and fit a range colours and finishes including cast iron and PVC sourced from market leading suppliers including Heritage Cast Iron Rainwater and Deepflow Systems. Another common problem with a property’s guttering is blockages. Over a period of time a collection of leaves and moss etc can build up, reducing the gutters ability to remove rainwater to the downpipes. Using a state of the art 10 metre reach Vac system, complete with inspection camera, Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to fully clean your gutters from the safety of the ground without the need for ladders, scaffolding or articulated boom lift equipment. Contact Deep Flow Systems on 01473 879448 or 07970 828559 deepflowguttering@hotmail.co.uk

SKy Watch Earth at Perihelion
by Neil Norman
It's surprising the amount of people whom believe he Earth to have a perfectly circular orbit about the Sun, but this is far from true: in fact, no planet in the solar system has a perfect circular orbit. The Earth actually has a elliptical orbit and this is measured in orbital elements as its eccentricity. An object with an eccentricity value of O, is in a perfectly circular orbit. Saturn's moon Triton has an eccentricity around its parent planet of 0.00002, virtually circular, but not quite. The Earth has a value around the Sun of 0.0167 today which is nearly circular. This figure can deviate from 0.0034 to 0.058 over time due to the gravitational attractions of the planets pulling and pushing Earth in its orbit. Because of the elliptical nature of our orbit we have 2 points along it, one is perihelion, or closest point to the Sun and the other, Aphelion or farthest point away from the Sun. Our Earth reaches perihelion each year in January (this year is January 4th at 14:18 pm) when we will be 147.100.997 km from the Sun and Aphelion (always in July each year) takes place on the 3rd of July at 20.11 pm, at a distance of 152,092,503 km. Now the eagle-eyed ones amongst you will think I have put these dates around the wrong way. How can the closest point to the Sun occur in January when we are usually having snow and when we are farthest away we've usually enjoying temperatures in the high 20's? The very basic answer to that is the perihelion point occurs 2 weeks past the Winter solstice (21 December) and aphelion occurs 12 days past the Summer solstice (21 June), meaning that the Earth axial tilt is virtually at its maximum each time. For us to experience global seasons, the Earth must alternate between facing towards the Sun and facing away from the Sun, the 2 points between are what we know as the Autumnal and Spring equinoxes. These equinoxes are the point our where the Earth is upright or perpendicular in its orbit so we can quickly zip through a year: (in the northern hemisphere) Spring the Earth is upright in its orbit day and night length is equal, after this date the Earth tips 'forward' until it reaches maximum tilt of 23.5 deg on June 21st, the days are longer and warmer, nights are short. From June till September 21st (Autumn equinox) when the Earth is upright again resulting in equal lengths of day and night, after this, we tip backwards reaching maximum 23.5 tilt on December 21st meaning long nights and short days. The distance from the Sun effects the temperature on Earth only very sightly, it's the season we are in that affects our temperature, Summer means the solar radiation is at its maximum over the land as the Sun is 61 deg high in the Sky, where as in the Winter the Sun only reaches 14 deg above the horizon meaning far less radiation from the Sun over land. That's the very basics of the perihelion/aphelion and seasons, global warming comes in to the equation soon after, but that's another story for another day! Until next time, Clear skies! Neil Norman. Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lisa Patchett Thank you to the many people who attended our Christmas Concert at St. Joseph’s on 11th December, and a special thank you also to Thomas who sang the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ for us so nicely. As a result of your generous donations we were able to send a cheque for £200 to the Rosa Simon Trust. Paul Simon writes: ‘This very generous donation from the Hadleigh Orchestra will go to giving local children and young people more chances than ever before to learn instruments, to gain experience of giving live performances and more generally come to appreciate the profound enjoyment to be gained from music. Thank you to everyone involved’. Rehearsals will begin again this month on January 13th. We meet at Beaumont Primary School on Monday evenings 7.30 - 9.30 p.m. and new members are always welcome. Hadleigh and District Gardening Club
Our meeting Monday December 12th - Our annual quiz was held last time out and an enjoyable occasion was had by all. Missing letters, picture ID, plant ID, Linda's world famous feely bags and music were the rounds tackled, all with a gardening theme. Some inventive questions were posed, including asking all to identify what programme the singing duo of 'Whispering Grass' starred in during the 1970's. Most got the answer (It Ain't Half Hot Mum), but no one took up the offer of an extra point to continue singing the song after the clip had stopped! The highest point scorers over the year for our monthly competitions were announced, with Julia Wild taking first prize. She is pictured in the centre of the photo along with runners up Kate Banks and Margaret Jeffery. Plenty of festive food was provided, and a big thank you to my fellow committee members for helping to make the event a success. Our next meeting - Monday 9th January 2017 - Next up to kick off our programme for 2017 we welcome Peter Miller from Kings Seeds who will be talking about growing from seed, with the theme being vegetables. Very timely for those of us that like to plan ahead and dream of the warmer weather to start the propagation process. As usual we meet in Hadleigh Town Hall at 7.30pm., members £1, non-members £3. The monthly competition for January is ‘A Bowl of Hyacinths’. Everyone is welcome! All the best for the new year, Andy Leeder, Chairman

The family of the late Frank Baker would like to thank everyone who attended the funeral at Seven Hills and for the many cards received. Thanks to the staff at Michael Smy for their kindness. Donations went to the Alzheimers Society.
Down to Earth ...with Dave Not a lot to do on the allotment and in the garden over Christmas and the New Year, but with some glorious weather during December it was a pleasure to be on the allotment just pottering about in the winter sunshine. At times I was the only person there. I did, as always, manage to find things to do. The old tired rhubarb was dug up, divided, and the best bits replanted. Various uneven paths tidied and levelled, compost heap topped up with horse manure form the stables, the asparagus bed was manured and the runner bean trench dug out ready for the addition of some compost to give the ever hungry runner bean plants a boost next year. Now is a good time to get any garden machinery like lawnmowers serviced to avoid any rush in the spring. Just in case we get any very sharp frosts it pays to lag outside taps, and if you have a watering lance, remove it from the hose, empty it and put it in the shed. A couple of years ago I forgot to do this and when I went to use the lance in the spring it had been frozen and split, totally ruined. If we do get a sharp frost keep off the grass. Have a good look around your garden for places where snails may be overwintering. They could be under or in pots that are not in use. A couple of snails disposed of now is damage prevented in the spring. Don't be squeamish, just dump them in a pot of salty water. On a recent evening visit to Anglesey Abbey near to Cambridge to see the illiuminated gardens, we were proudly told by one of the numerous volunteers, that he had been busy washing the white bark of the many silver birch trees planted there. A worthwhile exercise as they did look very pristine. We will be back there again in the spring to see the display of snowdrops and other spring bulbs. Whether we buy any to bring home is doubtful as nearly all the pots of specimen bulbs on sale are very expensive. On a recent trip to a garden centre we bought several new hellebore plants. This will save us possibly disturbing the sleeping hedgehog tucked up in his nest in the corner of the garden surrounded by the original hellebores that we were going to move. One job for a cold wet day is to sort through any left over seed packets, decide what did well, what failed, what to grow again, what to try for a change and what not to bother with. For me a lot less potatoes will be grown next year as they take up such a lot of space. My order to Kings seeds will be posted off over the next few days. That's all for this time, Dave

Stoke by Nayland yuletide celebrations!
Stoke ladies enjoyed two Christmas golfing and lunch events. The weekend Yuletide event took place on Sunday 4th of December and got off to a great start with 21 ladies taking part. Winners were:- 1st Mandy Byham and Suzanne Shaw-Smith; 2nd Lesley Garnett and Fran Chandler; Nearest the Pin were:- Fran Chandler and Lesley Hitchcock. On Thursday 8th December the second of the Yuletide festivities took place with 52 ladies going out to play 9 holes on the Gainsborough Course half on the front 9 and half on the back 9. A lovely lunch followed with several ladies who are social members joining in. The Committee ladies entertained with their interpretation of Cinderella, causing much laughter. Winners of the front 9 were:- 1st Gill Dutton and Debbie Howlett; 2nd Sue Spittlehouse and Nora Hutchinson; 3rd Angela Cudmore and Gwen Broadhead. Back 9 were:- 1st Edel Rew and Katrina Bygrave; 2nd Sue Gregory and Corinne Jackson; 3rd Fran Chandler and Jane Golding. Nearest the pin were:- Debbie Howlett and Mal Went. A special gift was presented to Anne Soar as she had recently be made an Honorary Member of Stoke by Nayland Golf and Leisure. She was a founder member of the club and for over 20 years of her time playing in many of the clubs teams amongst other things. Both days were a great success!
Lady Vets Section of Stoke by Nayland GC
Monday 12th December saw the Lady Vets section of Stoke by Nayland invite the men's section to their annual 13 hole mixed Greensomes Invitational match. The shotgun start was slightly delayed due to the fog, but once things got going there was plenty of banter between the members of the teams. Over 40 people sat down to the Christmas Lunch enjoying entertainment by Vets Lady Captain Diana Harris. The overall winners of the day happened to be Lady Vets Captain and Seniors Captain Norman Davidson!!! A lovely day enjoyed by all. Say Hello, Wave Goodbye – Cycling Committee News
There was a record turnout at Hadleigh Cycling Club’s AGM when the Committee thanked those standing down and welcomed new members. The Committee thanked departing Chairman Adam Chamberlain for all his efforts to steer the Club over the last couple of years. Under his guidance the Club has thrived and developed. And he has led from the front, taking on cycling disciplines and representing the Club successfully at numerous events. Adam will continue to coach the Juniors in 2017 along with Simon King, Martin Nichols, Perrie Higgs and Gale Pryor. The Committee believes that it is essential to grow this area and has invited Molly Cutmore and Ryan Gooderham to represent the Juniors. Molly and Ryan are excellent young cyclists and regularly ride in local and regional events. The Committee acknowledged the huge part that Richard Holdaway has played over the last few years, especially in the creation and delivery of the Club’s sportive, the Gayford Flyer. Richard is standing down due to work commitments. Mike Motteram has taken on the role of Chairman and the Committee has been strengthened by the addition of Farhad Abdly and Rickaby ShearlySanders. Mike stressed “the importance of continuity and thanked the Secretary, Simon King and Treasurer, Benson Ho for their hard work to ensure the Club runs effectively and maintains the high profile of cycling in Hadleigh. “We’re already looking to encourage new riders in the Spring with Chris Heron planning shorter, slower rides. Kate Billingham, Gale Pryor and Lucy Jay will again be working with women who want to take up riding.” Phil Barnes (Time Trials), Lucy Jay (Parents Rep) and Sue Calver (Welfare) have all agreed to continue on the Committee. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.org or email or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling
Hadleigh Bowling Club
The club ended our social events for 2016 with a sell-out Christmas Draw and Supper on the 9 December. It was a great night out, particularly for those lucky enough to take away one of the great prizes on offer. Preparations are already in hand for our Valentines Dinner on the 11 February 2017 with booking forms already being received. The committee have already published the 2017 events diary which includes a Barbeque, Summer Buffet, Fish and Chip Supper and Strawberry Tea as well as two coffee mornings one of which will incorporate the plant sale. We will be offering an open weekend where potential new members are welcome to come and try their hand without obligation. That is scheduled for the weekend of the 29 and 30 April and we will give more details nearer the date. The indoor “Short Mat” season is well under way and we are delighted to welcome some new members who hopefully will continue by extending their membership to outdoor as well. We already have two new members signed up for next outdoor season Our two league teams, Spinners and Weavers have certainly had a better season so far with the Weavers currently in 5th place having won 6 and lost 3 matches. The Spinners are in 7th place having won 4 and lost 5 matches, however both teams are within touching distance of the team currently in 3rd place. Although the outdoor season seems a good way off at this time, we are delighted to report that young Kyle Leeks has been selected to attend trials for the Bowls England under 18 national team along with Liam Harris, also of Suffolk, who won 2016 under 18 national final. It has been an exceptional year for the Club and we wish all our members a very Happy New Year and look forward to the challengers for 2017.
