Local Sea Scouts head for Japan! J
Two youngsters namely Anna Vince (13) and Aidan Roberts (12), from the 3rd Hadleigh Sea scouts have been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015. Anna and Aidan, who both attend Hadleigh High School, will travel to Kirara- hama, Yamaguchi City in July 2015 to join other scouts from around the world. The theme of the jamboree will be 'wa' meaning harmony, unity, friendship and peace. The scouts will take part in several community projects helping local people to make improvements to the area along with activities which will develop their understanding of global development, the environment and human rights. The scouts will also attend the peace memorial for the 70th anniversary of Hiroshima. Anna and Aidan feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to take part in this amazing adventure. They are both excited and looking forward to the challenges ahead, not least of all the fundraising they will need to undertake in order to meet the cost of the trip. In total, they need to raise £6500.00 and have got off to a brilliant start with a donation of £750.00 kindly organised by local councillor Mr Brian Riley. Mr Riley presented the cheque from his locality budget at the High School recently. The Sea scouts have plans for other fundraising activities, such as an activity day, quiz night and cake sales - details to follow, but would welcome any ideas, donations for raffles, and sponsorship to support them with their challenge. The 175th Hadleigh Show Saturday 17th May 2014 What a year to celebrate our 175th Show - the sun shone and the crowds descended in record numbers on the beautiful setting of Holbecks Park. There was more machinery on the Showground than we have seen for many years and visitors got the chance to see just how mighty these modern machines are. Young and old alike marvelled at the machinery in action as they watched a combine unloading its grain in to a moving trailer, and a forage harvester eat up lines of silage that had been rolled out by local young farmers. The Land Train, introduced last year, was once again taking children around the showground to stamp their “passports” at various stands. “The Sheep Show” was also back by popular demand and with more than 150 classes of cattle, sheep, goats and horses on show the livestock lines were busy all day. Ringside entertainment featured the Welsh Axemen, the Young Farmers Tug-O-War, Cyril the Squirrel & his racing terriers, Falconers and the "Dog and Duck" show. The Food Hall was busy all day with many local producers to tempt the taste buds. The Flower Show and Rural Craft Marquees were both bigger this year and as usual were filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen. The Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year. We hope to see you again next year on 16th May

Would you like the chance – in a spirit of acceptance and tolerance – to listen to others explaining what their faith means to them and making your own contributions? Would you like to do this in a convivial atmosphere, perhaps sharing food and drink from your own cultural background - If so, we’d love to hear from you. We are members of the Hadleigh United Reformed Church and are working with the Suffolk Inter-Faith Resource (SIFRE) to set up a SIFRE Circle whereby local citizens of goodwill and with a shared belief in the great value of a multicultural society can come together and chat, ask questions and get to know others from different backgrounds. Everyone at SESAW is happy when a home is found for another rescued animal but sometimes things go wrong. Regular readers may recall my story of feline sisters, Marmite and Peanut who were dumped in a suitcase at Christmas with Marmite’s kittens. Although they were all happily rehomed, Marmite and Peanut’s new owner become ill and the girls are very sad to be back to SESAW. As I wrote in February, they are lovey (for cats!) and again, I hope they soon get the forever home they deserve, permanently this time. Like any home, there is always something that needs fixing at SESAW. Now the weather is warmer and dryer, our volunteers are repairing and improving kennels, cat runs and the flight enclosure, ready for our Fete and Fun Dog Show on 27th July. More about that next time. Our fundraisers are busy too, preparing for three June events, firstly table top sales at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh on the 14th and at Leavenheath Village Hall on the 28th, both from midday to 3pm. There will be raffles and refreshments at both table sales and we will be glad of any saleable goods beforehand, or on the day. Also on the 28th Margot and Brian will be running a book stall for us on Sudbury Market. Like many of our helpers, they got involved after giving some SESAW cats a loving home so please stop to say hello. After all this talk of cats, next month I’ll be sure to tell you about some SESAW dogs that need homes and they are not all as small as me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!
Lovely Lavenham is revealing it's Hidden Gardens to the public... On Sunday 8th June between 11 am and 5 pm, 20-plus Gardens large and small, new and well-established will open their gates for this popular event. Delicious lunches and scrumptious cream teas will be available from the many hostelries in the village - an event not to be missed! Entry by programme £5, children free.

Mung Bean Now Open! Hadleigh’s new Health and Wholefood shop opened its doors to customers on Thursday May 22nd. At 11 o’clock, Jan Byrne, Hadleigh’s Town Councillor and renowned supporter of the High Street cut the green ribbon to allow people in. The supporters were greeted with a glass of champagne and gluten free cake. The road to getting the shop open has been a long one. We had hoped to be up and running long before Easter but that was not to be. We would have given up, but for the tremendous support for the project that we have received from people in Hadleigh. The staff: Trudy, Lorraine and Suzanne, have worked tirelessly to make the shop a reality. Never loosing their sense of humour, even when getting buried under bags of porridge and muesli base! Hopefully we now have all the items in stock that people keep saying they are looking forward to buying in Hadleigh once again. We have a wide range of organic produce, gluten free produce and general wholefoods. We stock cosmetics and toiletries that are animal cruelty free and environmentally friendly, and good quality dietary supplements. Come and visit us at 2 Maiden Way, between the dry cleaners and Le Petit Paris Bistro. If we do not have the items you are looking for in stock, we will do our best to get it for you. You can visit our web site www.mungbeanhadleigh.co.uk email us at enquiries@mungbeanhadleigh.co.uk or phone us on 01473 829998 Help us to make Mung Bean a success and keep the Hadleigh High Street vibrant

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and Roy Gwinnell Dear Readers, I so look forward to the longer days when the year gives way to Summer. I was delighted to be able to join Roy Gwinnell of R Gwinnell & Sons Undertakers for the opening of his firm’s new premises at 32 High Street Hadleigh. The rooms are light and airy and beautifully appointed. Gwinnells only run Rolls-Royce motor cars and the photograph shows me with Roy Gwinnell in front of a Phantom V hearse and limousine. You may have seen the horse drawn hearse and landau in the High Street too. I know only too well what a good job that Gwinnells do as they handled my late father’s funeral. The loss of a loved one is always a blow but you will be assured of a sympathetic service from Gwinnells. One never wishes to contemplate one’s own demise, however, have you made your Will yet? On the whole this is a fairly straight forward procedure and will avert complications that could creep in should you die without a Will. Why not call us to discuss matters. If you are thinking about having your affairs in order, do you have a Lasting Power of Attorney? As most of you will know this is a document that appoints someone else to manage your affairs and is very useful since it outlives any mental incapacity on your part. For example, you may wish to appoint your spouse and children to manage your affairs. There are in fact two types of Lasting Power of Attorney, one for Property and Affairs and the other for Health and Welfare and it is likely to be the former that will be of interest to you. Do come to see us so that we can make all of the arrangements on your behalf. As always, I was pleased to meet some of my readers at Christchurch Mansion and on the sea front at Felixstowe for the classic car run. As over five hundred cars drove the old route the roads were lined with the public waving and cheering. It is such an exciting day. I was pleased to be able to have a chat with the lady Mayor of Felixstowe on the seafront. I was sad to hear that Felixstowe had not had a Mayoral car for many years. It would be so nice for some of the trappings of Civic office to be retained. As I have mentioned to you before when I was growing up in Harrow, the Mayor would attend events in his Rolls-Royce Phantom and it was such a special occasion. Howard Gibbons

R Gwinnell & Sons new facilities and premises in Hadleigh Family-owned funeral directors R Gwinnell & Sons have moved into larger premises in Hadleigh. Matt Gwinnell, who oversees the Hadleigh branch, said: “We wanted to make sure that family and time-honoured values that are so important are maintained for all the people of Hadleigh, so we have opened a larger, still conveniently located facility with a beautiful chapel of rest and new Masonry room. We also have two larger reception rooms to accommodate recent requests to provide a venue to hold wakes. There has been a very positive response from local families so far. â€? An Open Day from 10am - 6pm took place on the 30th April, offering canapĂŠs and reception drinks with the Mayor of Hadleigh, Cllr Lazenby officially ‘cutting the ribbon’ at 1pm. R Gwinnell & Sons was established in Manningtree in 1986 by Roy Gwinnell and his wife Christine. Son Matt joined the business just over ten years ago, while Oliver joined the company earlier this year. R Gwinnell & Sons have facilities in Colchester, Manningtree, Clacton and Hadleigh. Horse and carriage rides took place up and down the high street in exchange for charitable donations. The Gwinnell family continues to offer personal service in all aspects of a funeral, such as registration of death, floral tributes, masonry, charitable donations and pre-payment plans. The celebrations included honouring the 80th Birthday of one of Britain’s bestloved dramatists, Alan Bennett, by re-reading his one-act play Say Something Happened which was the very first play Armchair Players read in May, 2009. As Britain is celebrating the 450th year of Shakespeare, he was also included in the festivities. The evening culminated in a hilarious reading of Tom Stoppard’s 15 Minute Hamlet accompanied by unique sound effects – toy trumpet fanfares, storm winds from bellows and a pot and a metal spoon standing in for the tower bells. What a production! Armchair Players meet on the second Monday of each month in the meeting room at The George pub, Hadleigh High Street at 7:30pm. Our next meeting is on Monday, June 9th when we will be reading George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. Everyone over is 16 welcome to join us. There are no lines to learn, no stage fright – read a part aloud or just sit back and listen as the drama unfolds. For further details contact the Organiser, Maddie Labinger on 01473 824033

Hot in your conservatory? Conservatories are designed to trap the sun, and they do it very effectively! Many people choose to install blinds, but this is not usually the best all round solution. The installation of a solar film to the inside of the glass or plastic roof will reflect away as much as 75% of the sun’s heat from the glass before it even gets in! Once professionally fitted, the film will continue to function completely maintenance free, and require no more cleaning than you would normally do. Not only are window films more effective at reducing heat than blinds, you will also find your investment substantially less expensive! The films and the installation carry a warranty of 15 years, so also offer great longevity. The adhesives within the film are protected by a powerful ultra-violet inhibitor, which means that your furniture will also be far better protected against the fading effects of the sun. Window films have other uses too – unsafe glass can be coated with a clear material which will make it safe should it break, or maybe to provide privacy through an overlooked window? The applications are limitless. All advice and quotations are completely free of charge or obligation Call Igloo Window Films on 07796 354853 igloowindowfilms.co.uk mail@igloowindowfilms.co.uk

One of Ipswich’s Biggest Quiz Nights Raises £1,200 For Deaf Charities One of the biggest quiz events in Ipswich has managed to continue raising a staggering amount of money for a local, national and international charities. Local hearing care specialists The Hearing Care Centre organised their 7th Charity Quiz Night to help raise money for their beloved chosen charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, as well as Umutara School in Rwanda, who support very vulnerable deaf children. Over 160 people filled the main hall at Greshams Social Club in Ipswich, for a fun night of difficult trivia, and light-hearted camaraderie with the aim to raise over £1,000. The Hearing Care Centre, which looks after peoples’ hearing across East Anglia, managed to raise £1,201.00 on the night, taking the amount of money they’ve raised at their annual quiz nights to over £10,200.00. The quiz, hosted by local entrepreneur and charity supporter Steve Flory, saw guests enjoy 9 rounds of spirited rivalry and it was only one point that decided who came out the winners. Universally Challenged, led by Mr David Spall, finished top winning £100.00. The second and third place teams also won cash prizes. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, said, “Our supporters continue to amaze me. Raising this amount of money time after time is just incredible. I must thank everyone who came along, as well as our sponsors whom without them we wouldn’t have such as successful event. We are now busy working on our next fundraiser now – so watch this space.” For photos of the event visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/news
Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice Our New Clinical Computer System The practice is changing its clinical computer system in June. This is a major piece of work for the practice team and we ask for your help and support over the coming weeks. Why are we changing? Our current clinical system has been in use since 1989. It was ‘state of the art’ at the time and although the system has been improved over the years it is now very dated and reached the end of its useful life. The new system (SystmOne) has greatly enhanced functionality for clinicians and the administration team and will eventually be in use across the whole of Suffolk, this will enable much better communication and care for patients.
During the ‘go-live’ period, the week commencing 16 June, we shall be offering book on the day appointments only. The process of moving patient medical data from the old to new system is complex and time consuming and this will impact significantly on the day to day running of the practice. With an entirely new system, we aim that we are all confident users by the ‘go-live’ date and all the doctors, nurses and support staff will require essential training throughout June. We will be offering slightly fewer routine appointments during the week of 16 June. We would like to ask that you consider deferring your routine appointment for a couple of weeks if it’s for a review of your long term condition or a routine medication check. If you are unwell over this period, please carefully consider whether you can get help from a pharmacy or self-care at home before you contact the practice. The on-line appointment booking and prescription request services will be suspended from the 9th June. There will be changes to the way you log in and users of the on-line services will need to be issued with their registration details again. Please contact us after the ‘go live’ date to request your new registration details. During this period some of our electronic systems will be temporary suspended and therefore if you need to telephone us for any results, please can you phone after 1pm to enable us to retrieve your results efficiently. Please be assured that a Doctor will remain on-call during this period and urgent care will be provided at all times.
Please be patient with us as we will be a little slower at first. Thank you for your support and we will endeavour to make this change over as smooth as possible.

Little Hall, Little Gem He stopped and turned towards the solid, highly polished chest of drawers. Sure enough there was the name of a boy scratched in the wood of each drawer. Five drawers in all and five names; the boys were evacuees from London and this upper room was used as their dormitory during the war. Whilst standing on the immense, oak boards of this upper floor and gazing at the roof beams David had another surprise in store: two oak corner cupboards. He smiled and opened the doors with a flourish, there behind each door he revealed an old washbasin with its original taps but it was the splash back behind each sink that caught my eye: a large oval serving plate with ornamental flower decoration. These 18th century Sèvres plates illustrate perfectly the artistic eye that the Gayer-Anderson twins had and their skill at collecting exquisite artefacts and placing them to full advantage. The whole of Little Hall provides a perfect canvas for their fascinating collections of decorative art, china, antiques and paintings. Major Gayer-Anderson was awarded the title of “Pashaâ€? by King Farouk. He spent much of his life in Cairo and became a distinguished Egyptologist. The Egyptian influence in the Little Hall collection is very evident. In the middle of the library sits a noble creature. The Gayer-Anderson Cat is an Ancient Egyptian statue of a cat made out of bronze, from the Late Period, about 664332BC.The original cat was bequeathed to the Nation and sits in the British Museum. This is a copy made by his brother, the Colonel. There is an identical copy of the cat in the Gayer-Anderson museum in Cairo. The Colonel was also a skilled carpenter, a skill he acquired in his army apprenticeship. He made much of the cabinet work around the house. Although I visited Little Hall Lavenham on a cold and wet Monday morning in early April the place shone like a little gem. David my guide had many stories to tell about the house and its visitors. He certainly wetted my appetite and I want to go back for more, hopefully also enjoying the garden in finer weather. I had visited Lavenham many times but it is only recently that I discovered this wonderful house full of treasures. Little Hall is on Lavenham Market Place and is open afternoons except Monday and Friday, from 2 and Mondays from 10 until 1. ÂŁ3.50 for adults, accompanied children free. Group visits can be arranged at any time. If you are interested in helping as a volunteer please call Wendy Barnes on 01440 783378. See www.littlehall.org.uk for more details.

Weeds away - the easy way! Trevor’s customers have been very impressed with his convenient, quick and cost-effective method of weed control for Patios, Block Pave and Stone Driveways, which is hassle free and can cost less than the Do It Yourself alternative. In addition, customers have been able to allow pets and children to play safely in the garden following weed elimination treatment. One of Trevor’s regular clients, Martin Wright, commented “I have used Trevor’s spraying service on two occasions to deal with the recurring toublesome problem of weeds on our patio and paths, the spray used by Trevor is very effective and well applied by him. This deals with the problem over a good period of time and the cost is very reasonable. A much better solution than DIY products which are not very effective and last only for a short time.” Trevor’s Garden Services provides the ideal solution to long term weed termination. Using a special, full-strength Pro Biactive formula, Trevor can easily control your annual and perennial grass problems, as well as those annoying broad-leaved weeds. Trevor also recommends this special formula, 360g/lt glyphosate (which is unavailable in everyday retail outlets) for clearing out-of-control weedy ground prior to planting or sowing. We have had such a fantastic response to our professional spraying services we are booking up fast, so if you have areas of block paving or driveways, patios and paths, or a plot of ground that’s wild with weeds, call Trevor for fast, free quotations on 01473 824315 or 07850 630389 to find out more about how you can make your weeds go away the easy way!

Kersey Mill Newsletter As the summer season approaches us we are all looking forward to the summer ball that takes place on June 7th to raise funds towards the restoration of the mill and have a great time too. At the mill the last of the grind stones have been removed from the rotten Hurst frame, we now plan to take lots of photos and detailed drawings with measurements of what remains of the rotten timbers so when it comes to making a working copy it will be reinstated as original, before returning the grind stones to their correct position. To say the stones were heavy is an understatement – they were dead weights needing delicate handling. The mill race has seen further works recently; the sluice gate continues to be worked on, the guides that we mentioned last month are now fitted. And the work goes on with some of the windows on the outside of the mill repaired and glassed. National Mills day that took place on the 10th – 11th May. A great number of people turned out to see the mill and enjoy the refreshments made by Alison and Donna, cream teas and scones made by Charlie’s fair hand in the nearby Brickbarn. We even had a mention on BBC Radio Suffolk when “wind mill Bob” was interviewed. The oldest visitor was Cecil from polstead who is 88 years old who we are hoping will visit us regularly perhaps next time with trowel in hand. The youngest was Olivia from Boxford who was 7 years old, fantastic to see such a diverse range of enthusiast visiting the mill. It was a pleasure to meet 30 members of the Longmelford Historic Society who seemed to really enjoy their evening tour of the mill and the Maltings Kiln along with refreshments again provided by Donna and Alison in the gardens on a beautiful warm evening.

Boule-In to Summer! With English roses and French lavender in abundance there's no doubt that summer has arrived at The Boule-in, Bildeston's pretty French Store. This June its summer exhibition 'Jardin du Monet' offers you the chance to wander in its pretty garden and to discover some original pieces to add French-style chic to your own garden as well as your home. Its new selection of French objet d’art and garden furniture will suit all budgets. "Al fresco living is an essential part of the French summer lifestyle, which means they take as much care creating a beautiful setting for a meal in the garden as in the home - and we all know how the French feel about their food!" says Cathy Bullen, proprietor. "What lots of people don't know about Monet was that he was a very keen chef as well as an artist and garden designer. His famous garden at Giverny produced all the vegetables for his table as well as flowers to decorate and, obviously, a fabulous setting to enjoy a meal al fresco." "Always use pretty objects when laying a table in the garden" says Cathy "French vases, plates and glasses, table cloths and napkins are perfect as they have a particular charm and turn a picnic into a party. What could be more perfect - food, flowers and furniture... and perhaps a bit of sun!" The Boule-in summer exhibition 'Jardin du Monet' runs from Saturday 14th until Sunday 22nd June - 10 am to 5 pm daily. www.boule-in.co.uk

link with town in Mali
Councillor Rob Spivey, recently inaugurated as the Town’s Mayor, will support four charities in the coming year- Homestart, the Stroke Association, the Alzheimer’s Society and Mali Development Group. The involvement with Mali Development Group (MDG) will take the form of a friendship link with the Mayor and Council of Yanfolila a town in southern Mali. As Vice Chair of MDG Rob Spivey came up with the idea of the link, which is designed to help, both communities learn more about each other. Local glass painting artist, Stacy Foster, to open glass painting studio to the public Saturday, June the 14th sees the opening of Glass & Craft, a glass painting studio and local craft shop located in the wonderful surroundings of Kersey Mill, near Hadleigh. Stacy says that although the concept of the glass painting studio is similar to the ceramic cafés which can be found around Suffolk where adults and children can paint on pottery, Glass & Craft will provide a different experience offering a wide and exciting range of glassware and pre-templated designs to choose from. “This means that, from novices to the really experienced, people of all ages can create a unique design as a memory, a present or something personal.” There will always be help on hand to advise and assist. The studio will also be offering Decopatch to make exciting mementos by sticking patterned paper on to the pre-formed 3-D shapes of animals, ornaments and lots more. Stacy says that Decopatch is a brilliant and easy craft designed to be stimulating, particularly for small children. The idea of the glass painting studio stems from Stacy’s current business, Unique Glasses, where she hand paints all types of bespoke glassware for all occasions selling to customers throughout the UK. Stacy says that it has always been her dream to open her own shop where she can share her talent and can help others to have fun creating their own unique glassware. Parties for children will be popular at Glass & Craft as the studio can cater for up to 10 children and Stacy says that they will be offering packages including catering. “We can do this as we are situated alongside a superb onsite coffee and cake shop providing a delicious range of home-made foods.” adds Stacy. As well as the coffee and cake shop, the Kersey site also has a variety of other independent retailers. In addition to the glass painting studio and selling their own items, Glass & Craft will also be selling a wide range of hand-made products from other local talented craft makers. Fellow local craft makers interested in selling crafts from the new Kersey Mill shop can contact Stacy or Richard for more details. To contact Glass & Craft and to keep up to date with the latest offers please visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GlassAndCraft or via their website at www.glassandcraft.co.uk

Thoughts on a Canvas Recently, St Mary’s Church held an Art Exhibition consisting of a variety of paintings, photos and drawings. The Art Exhibition was opened by Lillias August – a watercolour artist from East Anglia. She also specialises in still life and architecture. Included in the exhibition were three paintings by our very own Year 10 student Boris Takam including paintings of a duck, a landscape and fishes in the sea. 6 Year 10 students attended too. One student, Amarlia Thomson, said: “It was very useful to talk to Lillias and it was great to see all the artwork – some of them I wish I could have bought!”
Year 11 Our Year 11 students celebrated the end of their formal school career with us on Wednesday, 21st May and we were delighted to mark the occasion with so many parents attending their leaving assembly. Pupils are now in the midst of their examinations which will continue into June. We are providing a revision facility in school as well as access to teaching staff at the same time when pupils had timetabled lessons to ensure support is available until the end of the process. Working 9 ‘til 5 During the weeks beginning the 16th and the 22nd of June, all of the Year 10s at Hadleigh High will take part in the school’s Work Experience programme. These two weeks will give all the students a brilliant chance to experience a work based environment and turn their hand to different skills needed for the world of work. Some of the Year 10s organised their work experience themselves, and contacted businesses that do the sort of work they want to be involved in when they leave school. PSHEe lessons leading up to Work Experience will focus on the skills necessary for making the most of this opportunity. Salut Arras! On Friday the 16th May, French students from a school in Arras, in the north of France visited Hadleigh High to meet Hadleigh students currently studying French. This was a great opportunity for both parties to improve their second language, and also strengthen the connection between the two schools. Students from Hadleigh High had already sent letters to the French school and also sent a video in return for their video. The French students participated in ‘getting to know you’ activities when they arrived at break time, and then had a tour of the school. They were ‘buddied up’ with one or two of the Hadleigh students, and went with them to attend their third lesson after lunch. After visiting us, they journeyed to Ipswich, where they met the Mayor.
Results of the Year 11 GCSE Food Technology ‘Celebration Cakes’ The Year 11 students recently completed a fantastic Celebration Cakes practical. The morning practical began with making the sponge cakes. This was followed with the preparation of butter cream, frostings and fondant icing. In the afternoon session students iced and decorated their cakes before applying the finishing touches to transform the sponges into a brilliant display for celebrations. The whole class did a great job but after careful consideration by the judges prizes were awarded to;
Grace Knock – 1st ‘Army Cake’
Kate Midgley – 2nd ‘Guinness Cake’
Tom Seabrook – joint 3rd ‘Dinosaur Cake’
Annabel Macfarlane – joint 3rd ‘Tiered Cake’
Shooting Hoops This term the Year 11 netball team have excelled, succeeding in winning both their tournament, and the league! Congratulations Year 11! Bronze at stake…… 5 Year 10 groups recently took part in their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh qualifying expedition, which will count towards a quarter of their final award, so much planning went into this weekend. They hiked 25km over 2 days, around the area of Sizewell, in Norfolk. They had to carry all of their own equipment, which is not easy given that they were transporting their cooking equipment, and their tents, as well as their personal belongings. Most of them are focusing on the impact of litter and pollution on the land as their aim. We wish them well with future tasks and expeditions. Cleaning Up the World A new extracurricular club has been started in Hadleigh High school recently, called The Club. It is replacing the old Eco Warriors club. Its aims are to promote sustainability around school and to educate our community about sustainability and how it affects us. The Club is a student led activity, focusing on small projects with big outcomes, which can affect us in many ways. Ideas and events range from inviting a politician (Robert Lindsay from the Green Party) to talk about sustainability, to planning a possible wind turbine for our school, to organising a litter pick. Pupils taking part in the club say “It’s great to be helping the world, and it’s not just about sustainability, it’s about being part of the community.” The lead student in this club, Anna Gretton, Year 11, said: “We live in a world where it is unheard of and uncool to protect the environment, but we get so much from it. We need to make it our priority in life! We’re stuck in the world we create.”

Over and Out The Year 11’s have finished their exams and also finished their 5 year journey at Hadleigh High School. Over the years they have accomplished many great things as well as confronting many hurdles that they will look back on in the many years ahead. Many friendships will remain strong as they part their ways and start a new path to success. Many tears will be shed on their way to their futures and many laughs will be shared amongst new and old friends. We truly hope that they will achieve their goals. Good luck year 11!

For their pantomime Snow White & The Curse of the Ice Queen
Bildeston History Quarterly: Issue 11 (Summer 2014) To whet your appetite for what is in store in this season’s magazine, the answers to all these questions can be found in the variety of articles awaiting you. WHO was in Bildeston School playground in 1961 with Shirley Le Grice when their teacher Miss Baker took photographs of them? WHEN did a house from Bildeston end up on millionaires’ row in Hertfordshire, having already been moved once? WHERE in Bildeston were ten old timberframed cottages hiding under a coat of plaster and pebble dash? WHY did the lord of the manor of Bildeston live at Polstead Hall after 1765? WHAT happened to the town pump in Market Place when mains water was brought to Bildeston by Cosford Rural District Council? HOW could 121 people be carried on a single-decker bus owned by the Bildeston bus company run by Wyartt Bros? A new occasional series begins called ‘Tales from our neighbours’ in which people and places just over parish boundary will be featured. Hitchcock family papers kindly loaned by Christine Coe of Chattisham sparked further research and now the reasons for the founding of Wattisham Meeting House can be told. The story begins in 1758 with a disagreement at Bildeston and ends at Wattisham in 1825 when accommodation for 500 worshippers was erected. In between those dates, the successful completion a challenge is witness to the enduring commitment of one man to his own beliefs, to his family and to members of the worshipping community that he led. And finally, an essay written at Teachers’ Training College at Camberwell in London 45 years ago is the source of information for ‘On the land 100 years ago’, which is illustrated by four interesting pictures, taken by Percy Finter, Bildeston’s professional photographer. Bildeston History Quarterly is an independent magazine published at the beginning of June, September, December and March and your articles, letters and pictures concerning Bildeston and its surrounding countryside are most welcome. Please contact Sue Andrews on 01449 740673 Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 11 (Summer 2014) is on sale price £3 at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Keith Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh and Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer.

Wayne’s type face world a good sign Type face styles popular 100 years ago have been recreated by a sign writer to help bring authenticity to a project at a sports club. Wayne Tanswell is part of a dying breed of hand painting sign writers, and has been engaged by Newton Green Golf Club to produce a first tee starter’s shelter sign. The shelter is a reproduction of a shed once used by Arthur Davey, whose 60 years of service at the club from 1919-1979 is believed to have made him the world’s longest serving golf professional. The original shed – once the nerve centre of the club – is now an abandoned wreck and on land no longer used by the club. However, from old photographs, the club has been able ascertain the style of sign writing on the original building. Sudbury craftsman Wayne Tanswell, who writes books and lectures on sign writing, took up the challenge of recreating the type face on the original sign. He said: “I have a collection of ancient type face style books, including one published in 1919 entitled Alphabets & Co. Looking at the manual, I would say the original golf sign was a blend of Tragan Roman and Stellar Bold styles. “All signs were hand painted in those days and artists could mix styles on each individual letter, which would be very difficult in today’s world of computer generated images. “I am really pleased to have been given this challenge because it is nice to recreate a little part of local history.” In recent times Wayne’s skills have taken him abroad, and he is about to embark on a second visit to an African game park to paint signs. He recently published a book Writing Wrongs, and in November staged a show of his work at Cambridge Art Salon. In September he will be exhibiting at the Handover Gallery, London, N16.

Greenscape Energy - the reassurance of a quality Solar installation Residential Solar PV installations have only really come into the mainstream in the last 4 years and here at Greenscape Energy we understand fully that people are sometimes hesitant about investing their hard-earned savings into a relatively new technology.
If a potential customer is thinking of investing in Solar to help reduce their household energy bills and to give them an exceptional return on investment for the next 20 years, then they naturally want the reassurance that they are dealing with a quality company who install quality products with quality workmanship and after sales service. At Greenscape Energy, we continually strive to deliver a high quality service with sound and honest advice, culminating in the installation of a Solar PV system that suits the customer’s needs. This high quality of service has recently been recognised by both Solar World and the Independent Warranties Association. SolarWorld is Germany’s leading Solar Panel manufacturer and they have recognised Greenscape Energy Ltd as one of their approved partners. Independent Warranty Association, who insurance back all of our Solar Installations for 10 years, have awarded Greenscape Energy Ltd a ‘Customer Service Merit Award’ for achieving a 100% customer satisfaction rating on our installations. Pictured is a copy of the 2 awards we have recently achieved. For more information, or to arrange for one of our Solar Consultants to visit your home please get in touch. We can explain everything and carry out a free, no-obligation feasibility survey for your property. Call 01473 655655 or visit our website at www.greenscapeenergy.co.uk

Vintage Rally 14th & 15th June 10.30 am to 5.00 pm The Solar industry, despite being very tightly regulated, is like any other part of the home improvement or building trade. There are always some companies who don’t fully adhere to the regulations that have been laid down and who seek to cut corners in the sales, installation and service process in order to keep their prices very low. Sadly, we have encountered it a few times. Customers who have purchased a solar PV system only to then discover that the company they had selected had since gone out of business. Then they are left in the lurch to deal with any maintenance or warranty issues themselves.

ANZAC Day in Hadleigh Every other year the Suffolk Branch of the Britain / Australia Society hold an ANZAC Day Parade and Service somewhere in the county alternating with the Norfolk Branch. ANZAC Day is the national day of remembrance for Australia and New Zealand and it is traditionally commemorated on 25 April which marks the anniversary of the day that the Australian New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) went ashore at Galipoli in the inflated campaign of 1915. This year the society asked Hadleigh to host the event. Hadleigh has its own connections to the Galipoli campaign with a number of Hadleigh men having fought and died there and so the Town Council set about organising this event. It took a lot of hard work by the Town Clerk, Mrs Carol Bailey and Mayor’s Secretary Mrs Elaine Root, and Town Council staff to co-ordinate the event which was attended by The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, The High Sheriff of Suffolk, The Earl and Countess of Buckinghamshire, representatives from the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions and other local dignitaries. The Parade Marshall and Chairman of the Hadleigh & District Branch of the Royal British Legion, Mark Brennan led the parade which stepped off headed by the Stowmarket Concert Band closely followed by an Honour Guard made up of soldiers from HQ Sqn, 7 Bn REME, from Wattisham Station. In turn they were followed by representatives from the High Commissions and then a very colourful contingent of Royal British Legion Standard Bearers and veterans from all over the county. The Mayor, Councillor Brian Lazenby took the salute in the Market Place before moving on to St Mary’s Church for a service led by The Very Rev’d Martin Thrower, assisted by Rev’d Roy Burley the Wattisham Station Padre and Pastor Greg Frost from Hadleigh Baptist Church. The Hadleigh Community Choir gave a superb performance and on completion of the service all were invited to the Guild Hall for tea and ANZAC biscuits. The day went extremely well and all the visitors, especially those with Australian and New Zealand connections, were impressed with the town and very grateful for the effort made by the people of Hadleigh. Next year’s event, which will mark 100 years since the first ANZAC Day will be held in Ipswich at the invitation of the Borough Council.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club At a very well attended meeting on 12th May the Club enjoyed an illustrated talk by Carole (a volunteer) from the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The early pictures showing dormice predictably brought forth "Ohs and aahs" and those lead on to us seeing the progress over the last few years of acquiring land and support from land owners and the public to try and preserve this beautiful and unique creature for the future. So many factors have stacked up since the second world war to make this a difficult task, as they depend on hedgerows between spinneys and woodland. They never travel travel on "terra firma" during the short time they are awake and must put on lots of fat to get them through their long hibernations. Of course a huge amount of building, roads and houses, the grubbing out of hedgerows, and all the other appendages of the modern world have reduced their ranges significantly and seriously do need help. The other mammal concentrated on was the plight of that once plentiful and charismatic animal, the hedgehog and she stressed that Suffolk Wild Life desperately need information from anyone with evidence of them to let them know (suffolkwildlifetrust.org/hedgehogs or 01473 890089) The info is needed on sightings, photos, dead ones or droppings you have seen in the last two years and of course , where it was. Numbers have fallen drastically and these sightings are regarded as essential to pin point the reasons for the decline. We know slug bait affected slugs and snails is one likely reason so look out for mr or Mrs Tiggywinkle --please. Ruth Allen 822323

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts My garden continues to improve, but it needs to because I have agreed to open it for the Hadleigh Open Gardens event being organised by "The Friends of St Marys" on July 5th. Local open garden events are always interesting because one can see what grows well in your locality. I am starting to become concerned at the lack of rain. Digging in the vegetable garden shows that the soil is now quite dry 6" down. Both March and April were dry months, and we have not had much rain in the first part of May. I have already had to water a few plants that like to be wet. The rain from the wet months from October to February has all gone from our gardens. I ate the final home grown apple from 2013 on May 18th. I think that this is the latest ever. It was an "Ida Red". It does show how worthwhile it can be growing some of your own fruit providing you select your varieties well. Looking at my trees I seem to have a reasonable fruit set on most of my apple trees, and the plum and damson look OK as well. About the end of the month I shall go round and thin the fruit on the apple trees so that I get better quality fruit. April rainfall is quite variable, but this is near the minimum of the range, apart from 2007 when we only had 1 mm. The 3 monthly total at the end of April was 106.8 mm (4.2") which is only2/3 of the average. In April the maximum temperature was 20 Cel (68F) which is typical for the month, and the minimum temperature for April was 4 Cel (39F) which is unusually high. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 15 Cel (50 F), which is warm for mid May. Hints The mad Spring rush should be over and it is time to enjoy your handiwork, but there are still things which can usefully be done apart from the chore of mowing the grass. If you go visiting Open Gardens take a paper & pencil and make a note of plants that you think would look good in your own garden. Many people think that June is too late to sow seeds, but there are lots of possibilities. Amongst the flowers it is the right time to sow biennials like wallflowers, which will flower next Spring, and hardy perennials. I find aquilegias very rewarding to raise from seed. One can still sow hardy and half hardy annuals direct in the garden. Nasturtiums work well in this way. Amongst the vegetables one can still sow peas, french beans, and salad crops. Happy Gardening, John Rye

The season has started - we have had one win and one loss to date. We have had a home game against Horringer which we lost and an away game against Earl Stonham which we won, match reports below. We are still looking for more players any ability is welcome. So if you fancy taking up the sport come to one of our net sessions on Thursday nights 6.30pm at Homefields or come and watch us at Homefields on Sunday. Find out more about the club on www.Edwardstonecricketclub.com Mystery Spinner Baffles Edwardstone Batsmen Edwardstone Cricket Club started the 2014 season with a home match against newly promoted Horringer. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat making a highly respectable 203-5 off their 40 overs, the pick of the bowlers being Harry Young with his brisk medium pacers taking 3-38 and Tom Whymark 235. The Edwardstone reply started promisingly until captain Jack Clark was dismissed for 10. The innings steadily rebuilt until the introduction of right arm spinner A.Brahma who ripped the heart out of the home side by taking 4 wickets in one over. The only resistance came from opener Sam Chapman who was finally 9th man out for a battling 57 out of the final total of 98 all out. Experience And Youth Combine To Give Edwardstone Comfortable Win Earl Stonham won the toss and elected to bat on a picture perfect afternoon. After a confident run out appeal was turned down off the second ball the home team scored freely until Tom Whymark broke through thanks to a sharp catch from newcomer John Powell. It was the introduction of wily left armer Tim Beven that turned the game as he took 4-25 in his 10 overs with three of the dismissals clean bowled. Earl Stonham were finally all out in their final over for 148 with Harry Young taking 2-40 and the evergreen Ray Gibbons also 2-40. The Edwardstone reply began briskly with openers Captain Jack Clark and 16 year old Sam Chapman scoring comfortably . Wickets fell with Jack Clarke 14, Brett Crisp 11 and Rob Whymark a quick fire 16 dismissed by the sometime wayward Earl Stonham attack. The experienced John Powell then joined Sam and together they knocked off the required runs with ease reaching their target in the 32nd over with a massive 6 from Sam Chapman who remained unbeaten on 63. Powell finished 31 not out. This was a real confidence booster for what is a very young side with a couple of exceptions! Colts Report Our Colts numbers increase this year. We have 30 youngsters aged between 13 and 8 years of age. We look forward to more joining. Sessions run on Saturdays 9.30am at Homefields in Boxford. Richard Gosling MNAEA MARLA & Ross Stevenson MNAEA wiped their sleepy eyes and with the help of a strong coffee and a bacon sandwich managed to have Bychoice’s first Hadleigh Show stand ready for action when the gates opened at 8:30am! “We were both overwhelmed with the attention our stand was getting so early on”, Ross commented. Richard added “Along with our latest property magazine we we giving out free goodie bags; I could hardly keep up”. The real highlight of the stand was our free prize draw to win an Apple iPad Mini. The tricky question was to guess how much the property displayed was worth in 1968? We had hundreds of entries although no one managed to guess the exact figure which was £1400. We are please to say that we have now contacted the winning entry. Thank you for all of your support on the day, we look forward to seeing you all at the show next year! Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Welcome to Ebony’s Blog EDITION NUMBER 60! Yes, it is now five years since I started writing my Blog. I do hope that those of you who have become regular readers will now have a better understanding of the work that is done at The Shelley Centre by our team of Volunteers and of the life changing experiences enjoyed by our many Riders, whatever their age group. As for me, well, I’m in the doghouse - how come you ask? Parys came to the fence for a chat the other day with a companion and I asked “Who is your new companion?” seeing this very smart looking horse with her. Oh! Then, did I get the evil eye from said companion, who turned out to be Thyme, who had just been given his summer clip! He does look good though and completely different without his shaggy winter coat, as do many of the other horses who too are sporting their summer clip. Enough of me. I’m delighted to report that Paul Smith, in spite of an injury, completed the London Marathon in 4.54 hours: congratulations Paul! and thank’s from all of us for your hard work and commitment. Further good news in that we have just been awarded a £500 Grant from the Sports Relief Community Fund, via the Suffolk Community Foundation, to cover the cost of 18 Coaches (Instructors) to do the Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Course, which they will all have to do before November this year, and also to cover the cost of Rosettes which we will present at events such as our Shelley Show; Long Distance Ride; for Special Achievement etc. June is going to be a very busy month, what with a Pony Day on the 7th; Stratford Horse Trials on the 14/15th; a Suffolk County Training Day on the 17th and finally, our very own Shelley Show on the 29th! As for future dates for your diary, 03rd August for a Clay Pigeon Shoot at Feering (Call 01206.337457) and a bit early but, don’t forget the Long Distance Ride on 14th September; Entry Forms from Maggie Rayner, email: maggierayner@hotmail.com As you can imagine, our Riders are now into intensive practice for the big day on 29th June. Well, that’s me finished!! I see Margaret approaching with cloth and polish; looks like I’m about to get my summer dust down and polish, just in time for the Shelley Show! Sunday, Individual Stableford, 1 Angela Chapman, 2 Janet Sparks. Cha cha cha, 1 Janet Sparks, Margaret Hills and Sue Vipond, 2 Carol Durston, Claire Aldous, Patricia Havers and Rosie Jackson. Monday, Four Ball Better Ball, 1 Carol Durston and Pat Walsh, 2 Angela Chapman and Jenny Downes. Nearest pin winners, Janet Sparks, Emily Penfold and Jenny Wilkins. Newton Green’s First Weston Match Of 2014 Newton Green’s lost to Ipswich 2-3 in their opening Weston League match of the season. They also play Bungay, Hintlesham, Bury St Edmunds and Aldeburgh in the first season back in Division One of the competition. Suffolk Senior Jubilee Shield Newton Green’s Suffolk Shield team won their first match in this county competition, playing Waldringfield away. They now play away against Bungay. Ladies Annual Dinner The ladies have held their annual dinner and were delighted to welcome Barry O’Connell with his dog Guy from the charity Canine Partners, which is the chosen charity for this year’s ladies, men and senior captains. Barry, after retiring from serving in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in many conflicts, fell from a ladder whilst working in his garden. The cost of £10,000 is needed to train just one dog, which becomes a lifeline for anyone with a disability. Photo: Ladies Captain, Sue Thurgate with Barry and Guy from Canine Partners
Grant backing for unique golf feature A project to honour a unique Suffolk golfing figure has received outside grant support from three different sources. A first tee starter’s shelter is about to be provided in honour of the late Arthur Davey at Newton Green Golf Club, where he served for 60 years as professional. His service is believed to be a golfing world record. The shelter will be a replica of the small hut from where he ran the club from 1919 - the days of wooden hickory shafted clubs - and when geese and goats helped keep the grass short on the then nine-hole course. When he retired in 1979, Davey was made an honorary member of the Professional Golfers Association. The shelter project in his honour has received a £1,000 grant from the locality budget of Newton’s Suffolk county councillor James Finch, plus another £100 each from the parish council and the Newton Green Trust. The latter administers the green on which the golf club was originally founded. Peter Philpott, golf club chairman, said: “We are obviously delighted to have received outside financial recognition for this initiative, which will involve expenditure of around £5,000. “The grants reflect the unique status of Arthur Davey and his remarkable service to the sport, as well as his lifetime caring for the 45 acre green that makes the village so famous, and such an attractive place in which to live. Arthur’s service is of great pride to us, and makes our golf club unique among those that pioneered the sport more than 100 years ago. The shelter will include many details of the previous shed, including a hand painted sign in the same type style of the original on the old roof. Unfortunately, the original shed could not be restored because it is now an abandoned wreck on land no longer used by the club.” Mr Philpott added work had commenced on the footings, and the new structure would be in place within a few weeks.
Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Ladies Spring Meeting Forty four ladies played the Constable course in the Spring Meeting on 15 May in glorious sunshine followed by a meal afterwards. The course was tough, playing CSS 76 but Maria Gilgar triumphed, winning the Salcombe Salver (Silver Divn) with a net score of 72 ocb from Margaret Bentley net 72. 3rd was Nora Hutchinson net 75 and 4th Amanda Byham net 79. The Suzetta Platt Cup (Bronze Divn) was won by Ann Major with a score of net 75, 2nd Barbara Jones net 79, 3rd Betty Cox net 81, Ann Major, Roz Clements, and 4th Janet Hodge net 82 ocb Maria Gilgar from Susan Swan also net 82. A nine hole Greensomes competition was played on the Gainsborough course in the afternoon. Winners on the front nine were Gill Dutton and Christine McVeigh with 18 Points ocb from Lesley Hitchcock and Barbara Jones also on 18. On the back nine Anne Hemmings and Lesley Garnett won with 22.
Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group The first month of action has seen mixed fortunes for the senior teams. The 1st XI have struggled to recapture the form of last season, but have missed several key players and found their seam bowling a little depleted. However they have still chalked up two wins at Lakenheath and Witham, with Marlon Dias and Luke Ibbs making big scores. To be fair we do not have the resources to compete with the likes of Frinton, who might suffer if financial fair play was to be introduced into the Two Counties league. In the game against us in early May, the title holders were able to field Essex and England Lion Ben Foakes as well as former Essex quick Mervyn Westfield and Justin Greaves, a West Indies Under-19 international, and will surely be early pacesetters Sudbury’s closest challengers this season. The 2nds have struggled to put runs on the board and as yet have not been able to register a win despite some strong bowling performances. Michael Howe has done a good job not only standing in for skipper Ryan Phillips, who should be back to lead the team in June, but for providing lodgings for Jordan Waugh, who stopped off in Hadleigh in May for yet another farewell tour. It was great to see the Sunday 1st XI strike first blood against Sudbury in the first of six games we will play against our old rivals this year. We have not seen much of them in recent years (some might say we needed a break after some heated encounters in the early 2000s) but the Babergh derby is back on in 2014. Latest score is (Friars) Road 1 (Friars) Street 0. Next up at the Street is the Sunday 2nd XI, who have performed creditably although without a win so far. Congratulations to club captain Josh Davey and 1st team Vice-Captain Tim Rix for their efforts in the London Marathon in April. Tim finished in 4 hours 36 minutes, narrowly beating Josh who crossed the line 17 minutes later. In total they raised over £4,300 for their chosen charities. Don’t forget at the end of the month it is the club’s major fundraising event of the year – our summer dinner dance at Vauxhall Farm, Great Wenham on Friday June 27th. The speaker is Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan, a legend on the sporting after-dinner circuit. Tickets are £40 each and tables of 8 available. Tables and places can still be reserved with Simon Gladwell (07801 928911) and Buster Tampion (07841 917295). Farmer
