It must be a Sign! Guests arriving late, having missed the turning for Hadleigh, should be a thing of the past! The new sign on the A12 showing the Hadleigh exit has now been erected. “My constant badgering of Suffolk Highways, Amey the engineers and others, has at last succeeded. It is such a relief to see the new sign in place - even I, a resident of Hadleigh, would sometimes get frustrated as I missed the Hadleigh exit on a dark night,” says Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South. “It was ridiculous that a town the size of Hadleigh was not shown on the sign, yet the village of East Bergholt was. I am glad that it has now been rectified. I am grateful to our MP, James Cartlidge, who ensured that it happened.” A new weight limit sign has also been erected on the Colchester-bound carriageway, which is intended to help alleviate the problem of large lorries travelling through Benton Street. James Cartlidge added: “I am delighted that the signs have finally been installed. I congratulate Councillor Kathryn Grandon on all of her hard work in this matter and thank her for bringing it to my attention”. Visitors will now have to find a new excuse if they are late! James Cartlidge, MP, with Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South, under the new A12 sign

The awards were for Best Hotel of the Year and Best Business Tourism Venue. The family-owned hotel had been shortlisted for the Best Hotel award with the Radisson Blue Hotel at Stansted and Down Hall Country House Hotel. For the Business Tourism award they were competing with Colchester Zoo and Southend Royal Pavilion. Susanna Rendall, Managing Director of Stoke by Nayland said, “We were really thrilled to receive both of these awards, especially as the competition was very tough. We would particularly like to thank all of our staff for their invaluable contribution to the success of our hotel business, and it is wonderful that all of their hard work has been recognised in this way.” From pubs and restaurants to hotels and B&Bs, from visitor attractions to festivals and individuals - all aspects of the tourism and hospitality industry were acknowledged at this prestigious event. Scuffs and Scrapes Winter warning from motoring experts! Most motorists understand that keeping car paintwork in good condition prevents rust, both extending the life of their car and maintaining its value. However, whilst repairing major damage is a must, minor damage such as scratches, scuffs and bumps are often left, either due to concerns about cost, or the inconvenience of having the car off the road for a couple of days or more in a body shop. However, as autumn and winter approach, motoring experts agree that minor damage can turn into a major headache. Stewart Topp, AA Patrol of the Year advises, “Check for stone chips as rust forms very quickly in the cold, damp weather,” while Mike Gilderson of Scuffs and Scrapes, adds, “It certainly pays to repair even small scuffs and scratches, as these can spread into larger areas of rust, ultimately costing you dearly if left untreated.” “As the AA points out, it’s a smart move, to get your car repaired if you have any form of minor damage to your paintwork,” advises Mike Gilderson of Scuffs and Scrapes. “Whether a scratch, scuff, chip or dent, a cosmetic repair will not only make sure your car looks good, but will seal the area of damage, making it weatherproof and prevent rust setting in. If you leave it, the rust will eventually lead to corrosion which could ultimately result in a more extensive – and expensive – repair!” Mike uses a special system developed by ICI , which can repair small areas of damage within only a few hours and at a fraction of the cost of traditional body shop repair methods. What’s more, because Mike operates from a fully equipped mobile workshop, he can come to your home (or your place of work) and undertake the repair at your convenience, prolonging your cars life and improving its resale value. For further advice about winter motoring visit the AA website or, for a FREE no obligation estimate, with paintwork repairs starting from £65.00, contact Mike Gilderson at Scuffs and Scrapes on 01473 824909 or 07425 583478.

Fidelis Activity News Prison Governor. When public figures speak about their work it is often illuminating, entertaining and surprising. So it was when Declan Moore spoke about his career in the prison service including his current role as Governor of Hollesey Bay Prison and Young Offenders Institute. He made it very clear that an 'open' prison does not have the holiday camp Jill Howlett, Declan Moore, Rita Johnson status as portrayed by the media but is a realistic preparation for life outside the institution with severe penalties if rules are broken. There were plenty of amusing anecdotes highlighting how little members know about this way of life. It was obvious that Declan is passionate about his work. He was both delighted and immensely proud that his establishment had just passed the unannounced, official inspection with flying colours. Romeo & Juliet. Fifty years after its debut, Kenneth Macmillan's interpretation of Prokofiev's majestic score of Romeo & Juliet, was every bit as fresh as in 1965. Beamed in live from Convent Garden to Cineworld, Ipswich members thoroughly enjoyed the sympathetic portrayal of Juliet by a waspish Sarah Lamb and an emotional performance by Steven McRae as Romeo. Costumes and sets were sumptuous and colourful while the squash-buckling sword fights, convincing and scary. Perfect Nonsense with Jeeves and Wooster. This wacky production, on tour from the West End, tested to the limit the acting skills of the cast of three. A little slow in the beginning but the play hurtled along soon after that carrying the audience with it. The three main characters manage to play a total of six others throughout the performance. They seamlessly and effectively change gender, costumes and voices with hilarious results. The scenery designers, costume and props department must have been seriously challenged by this production but they definitely rose to the occasion. Much like the New Wolsey Panto it’s hard to believe that the cast has the energy for two performance in one day. Jan Devey

Fouling of the Sports Fields and First Meadow in Lavenham Lavenham’s Parish and Community Council are working together to eradicate the fouling of the First Meadow play area, and the Sports Field on Bridge Street Road, which is now reaching epidemic proportions. Both Lavenham and Sudbury Cricket teams have complained about the number of instances where dog faeces were left on the outfield, which is also used by Lavenham School for sports and recreation, and the sports pavilion hosts children’s parties. On a recent visit fifteen dogs were observed to be running around, some on lead, but most not. Unless dog owners start to pick up and use the dog waste bin provided, action may be taken to put in place a total ban of all dogs from using the two areas. The Parish Council is reluctant to take this action and would welcome any constructive comments from dog owners that might help to solve the problem.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and his mother in Monte Carlo This month we have glamour in spades. 2015 has been a special year for the Cunard Line as it celebrates its 175 years of history. You may have seen the glorious sight of the three ships of the line the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth proudly presented at Liverpool at the end of May. My mother, Brenda and I enjoyed a short break on Queen Victoria just after she had left Liverpool. We trotted along ports in the Mediterranean and the picture shows us in front of the Royal Palace at Monte Carlo. The Grimaldi family have been resident on the site for some seven hundred years. The weather was glorious and I was excited to see Monte Carlo again which I had last visited in 1985. It was amazing to see so many beautiful yachts as we were moored in the Marina. Simon Weston was on board and gave a fascinating and moving lecture about the Falklands and his life that followed. My chauffeur Frank and my housekeeper Maria continue to be very well, thank you. Naturally, they had to travel with my mother and I to attend to our multifarious needs. That included having a motor car craned off the ship at our various ports of call. The Commodore did suggest that it may have been easier to have hired a limousine at each port of call! There is just so much involved when the entourage moves overseas. I know that many of you have been concerned to hear news of my miniature dachshund Tilly who recently underwent a back operation having lost the use of her back legs. I am delighted to say that Tilly is making an excellent recovery. I am glad that you were all interested to hear about Big Ben. You will have seen recently that many millions of pounds of work are required to the tower and so I was pleased to have been able to have my tour when I did. Some agents tell me that the property market is slowing down, however, our instructions have continued at a reasonable rate. One parcel of land can be subject to so many interests in existence at one time and so it is so important that a title is properly investigated. Titles in this area only became subject to first registration in the 1990s and thus there are still a good number of unregistered titles that can require some careful attention in order to know that first registration can be achieved without difficulty. There is a great deal to be done in the Conveyancing process and that is why the purchase of a property is not “see it today and complete it tomorrow”. We look forward to hearing from you if you are buying or selling a house. It is so important to have one’s information marshalled and ready in advance. Howard Gibbons

The Country Threads Group make Bells & Bird Boxes for the St Elizabeth Hospice Day Centre Shop, Ipswich Like it or not it’s time to think about Christmas. The Country Threads group love it as it gives them an opportunity to put their skills, Christmassy material and patterns to good use. In a recent one day workshop the ladies came together to make seasonal gifts for the fund-raising shop at the St Elizabeth Hospice’s Day Centre. The main theme this year was Christmas bells, bird boxes plus some hand-crafted cards. Although the bells and boxes looked complicated to make everyone had a try and the results were most effective and attractive. The bird boxes house a miniature robin and a small novelty or sweets. The bells would make an eye-catching room or Christmas tree decoration. For re-cycle lovers they can be used and enjoyed every year. Happily, it wasn’t all toil at the workshop as there was plenty of time for refreshments, stories and laughter. If you would like to know more about this friendly group which meet every Wednesday evening at the URC rooms please contact Mavis 01473 824 398 or Email mavis.gordon@mypostoffice.co.uk

Profound thanks to the great people of the Black Shuck Motorcycle Club who raised £500 for Rosa’s Fund. It was a great privilege for me to meet them recently – although I did feel rather under-dressed! I was also able to see the Yamaha keyboard – purchased via a donation from Rosa’s Fund – in operation when I visited St. Elizabeth’s Hospice in Ipswich. Musician Ray Travasso provides weekly music sessions for the young people at the Hospice and it was clear that the keyboard is a very welcome addition to their music-making. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Fund to date – it was you who made gifts like this happen! Readers of the HCN may recall our report back in an earlier issue this year about the fantastic music workshop and concert in June supported by Rosa’s Fund and run by jazz pianist Pete Letanka and many, many kind volunteers. To see the real excitement and joy of the children as they learned new songs and performed them in front of a capacity crowd was a deeply humbling experience. Well, the good news is that Pete Letanka is coming back to do something similar next year. We’ve provisionally booked him for June 4th 2016. More details in later issues of the Village Edition Magazine. The Hadleigh Junior Choir, funded by Rosa’s Fund, launched in September and rehearsals are now taking place every Thursday in the United Reformed Church from 6pm. And don’t forget the first ever Hadleigh & District Young Musician of the Year competition, again back by Rosa’s Fund, is to be held on 28th November

12 Marathons 12 Months Marathon Number 10 (Training) and Marathon Number 11 Completed 04/10/15: LDWA: Flower of Suffolk Marathon was completed. Starting in Walberswick, a scenic 26.3 miles of Suffolk Coast and inland on heathland trail around Minsmere and Dunwhich, this event was used as preparatory training run in preparation for The Gower Peninsula Ultra 50. 10/10/15: Run, Walk and Crawl: Gower 50: Ultra. Starting from the event base at the St Madoc Centre, on the outskirts of Llanmadoc, North West corner of Gower. The route follows the Wales Coastal Path, across the cliff tops heading to and crossing Rhossli Bay. From Rhossli the path heads east along the southern coast of the Gower initially crossing farmland along cliff tops, until it reaches Port Eynon. Crossing a string of stunning beaches and bays including Port Eynon, Oxwich, Three Cliffs, Caswell and Langland until reaching the Mumbles at the southern tip of Swansea Bay. Kicking on through Swansea Bay and following the old railway line through the Clyne Woods heading to the north cost of the Gower. On reaching Gowerton, regaining the Coastal Path and following the Loughor Estuary on a flatter faster route. A final push through the dunes at Llandimore leads back to the St Madoc Centre and finished 50 Brutal and tough miles completed. Does it interfere with your ability to talk and laugh with your friends and family or enjoy a meal out? Does it lead to social embarrassment? A chronic cough is one that has lasted more than 8 weeks. The Festive season at The White Hart. And we are planning a great one! The menu is written for Christmas parties large and small and is available from the bar. By way of an introduction We are Simon & Ros Cook. While our children were small we ran The Smugglers Restaurant in the High Street, after a life time working in hotels and restaurants. We then opened our own outside catering company which has been very successful for the last 10 years. We are continuing with the outside catering alongside The White Hart with our exceptional team of staff using the same ethos of great food and great service in both businesses. Having spent the last 10 years catering for weddings and parties across the region. We are able to look at the White Hart with fresh eyes and bring the old pub back to its former glory. Gone but not forgotten are the days of Totty and Iris, Landlord and landlady of times gone by, but well remembered they are the people that made The White Hart memorable and we have heard countless tales about their reign as publicans in the town. We can only hope that we are even half as unforgettable as Totty and Iris! Having given the building more than just a lick of paint! we have created a light, calming and thourghly up to date atmosphere to the pub, coupled with some great food it is now the perfect place to meet friends or business colleagues. In the colder months we have the log stove roaring in the fireplace to sit by on our fashionably worn chesterfield or for the bravest amongst you try out the oak seats in the original alcoves in the fireplace, Alongside our home produced Lamb and beef from our flock of pedigree Ryeland sheep and our heard of pedigree Hereford cattle complimented by good supplies of local meat from our own high street Butchers namely Charlie and Dave at the Jolly Meat Company, we make a weekly trek to the fish market in London to keep us topped up with really good fish and shellfish. Mussels from Brancaster on the north Norfolk coast, inshore Skate, Rock Salmon, Witch Soles, Dover Sole and Sea Bass to name just a few. Shortly we will have our Fabulous en-suite accommodation fully refurbished and ready to go. Comfy beds, hot showers and a good breakfast attached to a great pub serving real ale and fantastic food and all on the ground floor. Our New Years Eve is going to be a good one this year! For those that knew us from the Smugglers you will remember that we throw a great party and this year will be no exception. A glass of fizz to start the evening off with a bang followed by 4 courses of wonderfully indulgent supper, dancing till late and fireworks at midnight! This year Sudbury Dramatic Society are bringing something a little bit different to Sudbury’s Quay Theatre with a brand new pantomime The Snow Queen, written and directed by local author Sara Knight. Very loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson story and written as a traditional pantomime, The Snow Queen features all your favourite pantomime characters, together with a mix of song and dance and the opportunity for lots of audience participation, making The Snow Queen a pantomime full of snow and magic. When principal boy Kay is stolen away by the Snow Queen and her trusty Polar Bears, our heroine, Gerda chases after them, along with her friend Molly Moose. They are helped along the way by her Aunties and their pet reindeer! That is the start of a large helping of chases, booing and cheering in all the right places, as well as a touch of magic until the Snow Queen and the Polar Bears are defeated (of course) and everyone lives happily ever after. The Snow Queen at The Quay Theatre starts on Friday 18th December and runs until Saturday 3rd January with a variety of evening and matinee performances on offer. Tickets are available now from the Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaytheatre.org.uk, with discounts available for party bookings Panto at the Quay Theatre has always been one of the year’s high spots so don’t miss The Snow Queen. We look forward to seeing you there!

Christmas is creeping up faster than you think and Christmas means Pantomime time!

Pause for Thought - Laser surgery needed! When people hear that I'm a Christian they say things like: ‘So you must be really religious and don't do anything wrong’ or ‘you must be judgemental’, ‘a do as I say not as I do type’! I'm happy to say they are all wrong. You see, following Christ doesn't mean you've got it right, far from it because it means you realise just how wrong you've been in the past and you still make some of those mistakes but you're learning and you've consciously turned away from doing wrong. So how do you move in the right direction? Simple really, by reading God's Word the Bible. I listen to sermons at Church and do some reading and research. Jesus is a very accurate surgeon using skilful hands. He knows what's wrong with me and operating with perfection, slices away bad attitudes, thoughts, motives and actions. I'm becoming a better person but it's taking time so thank God he's both skilful and patient. Revelation 1 verse 2. “Blessed is the one who reads this prophesy aloud and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near”. Kenny Sanderson

Poltergeist at large...! If something appears to fall from a shelf with no-one nearby, we always blame Mr Bloomfield. He’s the resident ‘shop keeper’ from days gone by.. so we’ve been reliably informed.. he appears content with how we are looking after the Old Bakery, as nothing too untoward has happened so far... The Old Bakery Emporium in the heart of Hadleigh is crammed with all things Vintage - including Eastern rugs, books, pictures, porcelain, glassware, pewter, collectables.. and all you would expect for that country look! Snuggled comfortably along side is a newly opened fabric section with remnants, bolts of curtain and upholstery material. Berni has opened her paint studio ‘Be’ at the top of the shop selling painted French-inspired furniture, stylish collectables, and stocks Autentico chalk paint. The stock in the shop is always changing as all items are one-offs, so if you see a piece you love don’t hang around, snap it up! It’s that time of year again and Christmas trees - non-drop Nordmann Spruce - will be on sale this year from the first weekend in December. Many who bought last year came back to tell us they were the best trees they had ever had! Can’t argue with customers...! Looking for inspiration for presents, then come and check out the Emporium! Beats ending up giving a gift token.. And should you find yourself alone on the first floor but feel someone is watching, it could just be Mr Bloomfield... The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts is preparing for its 94th year and the 2016 Syllabus is now available from the Festival’s website at sudburyfestival.org.uk and also the Tourist Information Office in the Sudbury Library, Compact Music, North Street, Sudbury, and Balaam's Music, Risbygate, Bury St. Edmunds. The front cover was designed by Dan Hunt in Year 13, a Fine Art and Performing Arts student at Ormiston Sudbury Academy. Holmes and Hill, in Sudbury, is very kindly sponsoring the 2016 Festival. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dan for his wonderful cover design and Holmes and Hill for generously supporting the Sudbury Festival. We are anticipating a really successful year and look forward to receiving your entries. The Festival welcomes talented people from all age groups from a wide area of East Anglia. Some are experienced performers, but we also welcome those who wish to enter for the first time and we would like to encourage more schools to enter. There are a large number of cups to be won and there are non-competitive classes for those who prefer them. The Adjudicators, who are all highly qualified in their various fields, give to all performers a constructive and helpful appraisal.

Councils look for unsung Heroes! Nominations are now open for the first joint Babergh and Mid Suffolk Community Achievement Awards. Is there someone you know who goes above and beyond in helping others? Someone whose tireless work and dedication to the community inspires others? If so, let us know. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, in partnership with the East of England Co-Op, are looking for the men and women who have given hours of their time to their communities, to be recognised by their first-ever Joint Community Achievement Awards in April. The awards, judged by a panel including district councillors and young people from local schools, will recognise 30 members of both communities, across four categories: 1. Rising Star: recognising young people (below 18) who have made an outstanding contribution to their community 2. Community Hero: recognising a person who has provided selfless service to a voluntary body or made a significant contribution to their community 3. Action in the Community: recognising the work of groups of people whose actions affect the wider community 4. Outstanding Local Business: recognising a business located within Babergh or Mid Suffolk which has made a significant contribution to their the social or environmental wellbeing of the district and its residents Eligible community work could come in any shape or form, from fundraising work to campaigning for improved local services or providing a long-term service to the community. Nomination forms have already been sent to schools, town and parish councils and district councillors throughout the two districts as well as Community Action Suffolk, Suffolk County Council and numerous other community groups. The winners will be recognised at a formal dinner in April at Wherstead Park, compered by Mark Murphy from BBC Radio Suffolk. Both Babergh District Council and Mid Suffolk District Councils have previously run their own Community Achievement Awards, but this year marks the first time the two councils have run a joint awards event. Christian Bone, Head of Member and Community Services with the East of England Co-Op, said: “As a community retailer with stores in many towns and villages across the region, we have the privilege of supporting many fantastic groups and individuals. “We are delighted to support the Babergh and Mid Suffolk Community Achievement Awards this year. These awards are a chance for all of us to recognise the work that so many people put in to make our community a better place.” The awards are organised by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils in partnership with, and generously sponsored, by the East of England Co-op. For more details contact Josephine Beever on 01449 724 654 or via josephine.beever@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk. Applications are open until 12 noon on Thursday 31 December 2015 and can be made online via: www.babergh.gov.uk/CAA or www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/CAA

Boule-in’s Festive French Flair... "I ADORE Christmas" says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston's French boutique store 'The Boule-in'. "I adore the traditions, the gathering of friends and family, the giving of gifts - and, of course, the decorating - It's a time when we can all indulge the 'interior designer' in us! Everyone does it differently chic and shiny or rustically charming - both styles work well at Christmas." Travelling around France and being part of the London retail scene with their successful second shop 'The Boule-in' Kennington, gives Cathy ample opportunity to glean lots of ideas how to decorate for the festive season. "I always find that the French have a great ability to mix things together, old and new. By choosing the best of both they combine to give a fabulous flair to their interior design." This November (26th until 28th) 'The Boule-in' will once again fling open it's gates on Bildeston High Street and invite you into share a piece of French flair ( and fare!) at it's 'Fete de Noël'. Renowned for its hospitality, you can enjoy picking through the latest treasure trove of stylish stock - perfect for gifts and decorations alike - with a mulled wine in hand (and possibly a brownie in the other!) "I think it's my favourite sale of the year" says Cathy "the atmosphere is always so special." With traditional French carols playing, authentic French vintage decorations (I've been finding boxes of them throughout the year and storing them up!) and some gorgeous pieces to make thoughtful and original gifts. With stylish stock at affordable prices and with a warm welcome to this charming sale - what's not to like! The Boule-in 'Fete de Noël' Thursday 26th, Friday 27th & Saturday 28th November (10am - 8pm daily) www.boule-in.co.uk

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre We may have survived the ghosts and ghoullies of Halloween, but I have been watching the ponies and horses spooking at one particular corner of the arena! You would think they should all be used to branches waving and pheasants chattering by now, but there are some (I won’t mention names) who still feel anxious about this corner, and pass their fears onto their friends in the herd. I have a little friend in my ‘room’ too, she is called Babs but neither of us is at all silly about spooks. So long as we are serviced regularly and there are no power cuts we are the steadiest of mounts. Babs has been here much longer than me and she has a very loyal bunch of riders. Poor old girl, she is no looker, like I am. I have a fine figure and gorgeous tack, and you should just see my mane and tail! They are black like me, made of real horse hair. Talking of hair, a most amazing thing happened recently. Heather Barrie, a 13 year old pupil at East Bergholt High School, decided to raise money for us by having a sponsored hair cut! This is what she wrote to our Chairman: “I wanted to raise money for the RDA because you’re local and you’re a small charity that relies on donations and volunteers, and you help loads of people with disabilities through riding. I love riding and compete on my own pony Lolly, and the problem with having very long hair is that I have to wear a hair net when I am doing showing classes. So I decided to have it cut. I looked on Virgin Money Giving website and found that The Shelley Centre did have a registered charity page with them”. She says the rest was easy….but I bet it took a lot of hard work and courage. Everyone here is very grateful for the money she raised and we always bless the many kind people who help us to keep going. Our supporters were racing frogs last month, would you believe? I have heard that last year’s running costs were just over £73,000, a hair raising amount I think but you’ll not catch me having a mane and tail cut, not for all the apples in the bucket! The past twelve months have seen our U3A continue to thrive in numbers of members - now approaching 250 - and events held, as well as our 29 special interest groups and our monthly speaker meetings. Our members are free to participate in different permutations of these activities as they wish. Our monthly speakers have covered a wide variety of subjects - we all discovered our inner Marie Lloyd singing along to music hall songs, sailing round the world on a container ship and were carried away with a mesmerising performance of tales of life at Shakespeare's Globe. We learned about Scott's forgotten surgeon, artists who painted horses, the many and varied aspects of natural pearls and looked at the history of Hadleigh and the people of Suffolk from a number of different angles. A full programme of speakers is already in place for the coming year. We had theatre visits to the Regent and the theatre Royal in Norwich and more opera and drama are coming up in the near future. And we again supported the region's Untapped Writer's Group performances and a spent a memorable evening of Jazz at the Fleece in Stoke-by-Nayland. Inspired by last year's guided tour of St Pancras, for this year's holiday we travelled to Bruges by Eurostar and I know I learned far more from our guided tours there than ever I did on a previous social trip with friends. Further afield we went on a fascinating tour of the institutions of the City of London including a lecture and tour of the Bank of England Museum, Lloyds of London and lunch at the Honorable Artillery Company. We also took another of Andrew Davies' Unknown London tours, this one exploring Legal London including the Law Courts and the original Bank of England - who knew the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street started life elsewhere? And in July a sunny summer day was enjoyed at the RHS Flower Show at Hampton Court. As ever we enjoyed our summer party at the Guildhall generously catered by our members with much hilarity from David Deacon teaching us about the dialects of old Suffolk, then yet another fully booked Christmas lunch, this time at Hintlesham Hall where we shall return this year. The U3A slogan is learn, laugh and live and we do our best to provide varied and appropriate opportunities for our members to do just that. There are no age limits and the only criteria for membership is that people are no longer in full-time paid employment. The annual subscription is just £12.00 per year, which includes twelve monthly meetings and a quarterly Newsletter with additional activities at extra cost depending on the event. As ever, new members are always welcome. No academic qualifications are required and no examinations are involved. So why not come along and see what you think? Our monthly meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 2.30 pm at the Ansell Centre. To find out more go to www.u3asuffolknetwork.org.uk and follow the links to Hadleigh Suffolk U3A. Or email our membership secretary at chrisandroy@gwinnell.co.uk or ring on 01449 741234. Sue Witham, Chairman

Rotary Review CLUB EVENTS: The concert mentioned last month has been and gone with an audience of about 60 being well entertained by the Hadleigh Community Choir performing a variety of popular songs and music. The Club raised a net ÂŁ383 for its charitable trust fund from ticket/wine sales and a raffle. Many thanks to the Choir, the very generous audience, sponsors and donors who ensured this excellent result. SPEAKER: Tony Catesby, Rotary Assistant District Governor for the area, spoke about his experiences when the cross channel electricity cables were laid in 1984. He was working for Trinity House at that time and the coastguard service provided protection for the cable laying vessels etc by creating a safety zone around the working area to divert the 400 ships using the Channel on a daily basis.Eight cables were laid between Folkestone and Calais. The cable laying team consisted of a large barge carrying 2 diggers, the cablelaying vessel and a minisub. The diggers worked 12hour shifts with one on seafloor and the other being serviced on the barge so that no hold ups would occur. Tugs moved the barge anchors as required and the cable layer followed behind. The minisub was used to check that the cables were in the correct position in the trench etc. The working area was marked by buoys which again were moved as the work progressed. Tony was guard commodore of the French section with 3 guard ships under his command supervising the movement of the buoys and communicating with ships moving up and down the Channel to ensure that they followed the divertions and did not stray into the protected area. The operation started at the beginning of April and they reached mid channel in June meeting and joining up the cables being laid in the English section. The aim was to utilise spare power generated by each country to cover shortages in the other. The system still operates today but 97% of power flow is from France to England. (Personal comment - perhaps one reason to remain in the EU as cost of power bound to increase massively if we leave) FUTURE MEETINGS: The Club is now operating on its winter timetable with the 1st and 3rd Thursdays in month being at lunchtime 12.30 for 1pm and remaining meetings being in the evening as usual. It is hoped to have 2 speaker meetings in November - 5th and either 19th or 26th. In December there is a special general meeting on 3rd, the Christmas Party on10th [ both members only], short meeting 17th as Christmas collections will have started and no meetings on 24th and 31st for obvious reasons. The magic of Christmas prepares to be sprinkled over Lavenham Plans for a magical three-day Christmas fair are gathering pace to ensure the festive season gets off to a great start in Lavenham. The Dickensian-themed fair starts on the evening of Friday 4 December with the lighting of the village Christmas tree in the Market Place and the arrival of Father Christmas who will be visiting the village throughout the whole weekend. The festivities and entertainment continue in the Market Place and the historic Guildhall and Little Hall through to Sunday 6 December with organisers promising something for everyone. Martine Crepy, from the Christmas fair organising committee, said: " "We are very excited about this year's three-day festive fair. "Lavenham is a magical place 365 days of the year but we are working hard to ensure there is an extra sprinkle of festive celebration for our big weekend event." Among the attractions are late-night shopping, around 80 stalls selling a unique selection of gifts, clothes and stocking fillers as well as an array of food and drink stalls and Father Christmas paying a special visit to the village over all three days. The big wheel, offering bird's eyes views over the historic village and surrounding countryside, will be returning while entertainment is planned all weekend including the Lavenham Upbeat Contemporary Choir, Sabrina Summer, Peter Hepworth and famous accordionist Martina Schwarz as well as Lavenham Falconery. A grand raffle with fantastic prizes donated by the Great House, Weavers’ House Spa at the Swan Hotel, Lavenham Clinic and Lavenham Photographic has also begun with tickets priced at just £1 meaning you could win a Christmas bargain. The fair will run between 5.30pm and 8.30pm on Friday 4 December, 11am and 5pm on Saturday 5 December and 11am and 4pm on Sunday 6 December. For more information go to www.lovelavenham.co.uk or visit the fair’s very own Facebook page www.facebook.com/LavenhamChristmasFair.

Help to improve your councils’ open data Residents, businesses and community groups across Suffolk are being asked how their local council can improve openness and give people better access to information. Any feedback received will be form part of a joint initiative, called ‘Releasing Data for All’, involving Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, Forest Heath District Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Councils, Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District Councils, and Ipswich Borough Council. Earlier this year the councils tabled a joint bid for government funding to help with the project. They secured a £205,000 grant as a result. Now, the councils behind the bid are asking local people to identify what information they want access to. Part of the initiative will seek to reduce duplication between the councils in order to improve efficiency. The project aims to identify and publish collections of data, held by councils in Suffolk, which could be helpful to partner organisations, their communities, businesses and organisations. The councils intend to start publishing the collections by autumn and it is hoped the ongoing release of data will create a wealth of knowledge, which in turn will support economic and social growth countywide. Councillor Jennie Jenkins, Babergh Leader and Chairman of the Suffolk Public Sector Leaders, said: “Over the coming months we will be working with our fellow Suffolk councils, as well as our partner organisations and communities, to identify what information could most help users throughout Suffolk. “This information, where possible, will then be published on the Suffolk Observatory website and will be accessible to everyone. “We urge businesses, organisations or communities to get in touch, with any suggestions about what information they would find beneficial.” For more information regarding the Releasing Data For All project, including how to get involved no matter which council area you live in, please contact Babergh and Mid Suffolk on (01449) 724901 or email: opendata@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk.

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Sudbury Symphony Orchestra’s next concert features Haydn's Trumpet Concerto. Our solo trumpeter is the young Cameron Johnson who has gained wide recognition for brilliant performances throughout his teenage life, resulting in scholarships to attend the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Royal College of Music. Cameron has held the Principal Trumpet position for the University of London Symphony Orchestra, directed Kings College London Big Band, toured with the European Youth Orchestra and performed several concerto recitals and solo performances in and around London. He finally settled for the Royal Academy of Music this September and we are now very pleased to accompany him in this delightful gem of a trumpet masterpiece. Famous Italian composer Rossini returns to Sudbury, this time with The Overture to theThieving Magpie in which the magpie's theft of a silver spoon nearly causes a falsely accused servant girl to lose her life. We finish the evening with Alexander Borodin's powerful 2nd Symphony, one of this Russian composer's greatest works. It has also been described as one of the boldest and most colourful symphonies of the 19th Century. An exciting end to a great evening's music. For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish

The birth of a baby should be a time of happiness and celebration. Sadly, though, for some families the anticipated joy of a new arrival can quickly turn to grief. According to NHS figures, 1,300 babies died or were injured during birth in the UK in 2014, while another 1,000 were stillborn. Research shows that in most cases these incidents were caused by the failure of midwives and doctors to adequately monitor a baby’s heart rate during labour, thus starving them of oxygen during the birth process. The result of these failings has been an increasing volume of clinical negligence claims involving brain-injured, disabled and stillborn babies. A recent study carried out by the University of Leicester discovered a failure nationally to ensure both proper monitoring of foetal growth during pregnancy and a baby’s heart rate during the critical period leading up to and during birth. Researchers recommended that hospital trusts should be required to carry out a full inquiry after such an incident with an independent reviewer. For any parent coming to terms with the pain of losing a new-born - or the realisation that their infant has been injured or left with a disability - the ordeal is made even worse by the failure of a hospital trust to explain what has happened, to review the causes of the tragedy and to offer reassurance that lessons have been learned. Clinicians should always tell patients when things have gone wrong, to apologise and to try and put things right. This is in addition to their ethical requirement to be open and honest, and the more recent statutory duty of candour, which came into effect in 2014. Under the duty, NHS Trusts are required to advise patients of notable safety incidents including those which, in the opinion of a Health Care Professional, could result in significant harm. The scope of the duty of candour was extended in April of this year to cover private care as well. For the family of a child who has suffered injury at birth, the duty of candour could have a very significant bearing. For example, in the case of an infant who has suffered a period of oxygen starvation (hypoxia) during birth in an NHS hospital, the family should be informed that the event could result in significant harm. In those circumstances, should the child fail to meet the expected developmental milestones as he or she grows up, the family would be able to take that information into account when considering what action to take. However the family of a baby delivered in a private hospital in similar circumstances could be left unaware that there had been any such problem, meaning they wouldn’t know the possible reasons behind the child’s stunted development. It may be they endure a delay of several years before establishing the truth of what actually happened. If you or any member of your family have been affected by any of the issues raised in this article, contact Chris Moffat of the Medical Negligence Dept on 01473 298189 who would be happy to discuss your case to see how she may be able to help.

Help to keep warm this winter Winter weather can create serious financial and physical challenges, especially for the elderly, disabled people and families with young children struggling to keep warm in their homes. Last year, there were 400 excess winter deaths in Suffolk, believed to be connected with the cold weather. But help is at hand. Suffolk's Warm Homes Healthy People scheme offers support to those most in need of additional help to either keep their homes warm or to be able afford their next home energy bills. The scheme can help home owners or tenants who privately rent their home and are on a low income and or in receipt of a means tested benefit. The scheme also takes into account age, disability and cold related health conditions. If you're struggling to keep warm or are worried about the cost of heating your home, you could get help with: • Emergency boiler and heating repair costs. • Winter fuel payments. • Free home energy survey with advice on insulation, fuel switching and cheaper oil prices. • Basic draught proofing. • Temporary loan of heaters. People with vulnerable relatives or neighbours are also urged to help them find out more about the support available. Eligibility criteria apply. For more information, call the local rate Warm Homes Healthy People helpline on 03456 037 686. Let’s all stay warmer and healthier this winter

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Photography was the subject of our October meeting...naturally with a gardening theme. New Hadleigh resident Clare Dawson was our guest speaker, describing with obvious pleasure the techniques she uses for her plant portraits and field work. Many beautiful examples were shown, each often taking many hours to complete. We were told that being on site for live work at first light was best - a few of us shuddered at the thought of 4.00am starts! A couple of years ago I made the decision to change career, moving out of the closeted office world after 30 years, to set up my own gardening business. If I'd had my hat with me though (must find it again soon, it's starting to get a bit chilly out there) I'd had to have taken it off to Clare. In her late 50's she decided to do her own 'career about turn' and start studying the thing she loved - photography. Sitting bravely amongst students still in their teens, she ultimately graduated with honours to become a professional photographer specialising in horticulture and, amongst other things, currently works for the EADT Suffolk magazine. It's never too late...... It was good to see so many in attendance at our October meeting and some more new faces as well. At our next meeting on November 9th (7.30pm at the Town Hall) we welcome Maggie Thorpe from Suffolk Plant Heritage. Maggie will be talking about the work of Plant Heritage (the world's leading plant conservation charity). She will also bring examples of propagation methods a subject close to every gardener's heart and about which there is always something to learn. Propagation can be fun too and can save you money. So whether you are a gardening beginner or have soil permanently under your fingernails , we hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Autumn is traditionally a time for looking back over the year just gone and remembering our achievements. The past few months at Orchard Barn have been particularly busy, both on and off site. Over winter we completed a seat/display board at West Stow Anglo Saxon Village as part of the Heritage Lottery funded Brecks Building Skills day schools. We had a stall at the Grand Designs Live Exhibition in London. We exhibited both at the Latitude Festival and Folk East and introduced youngsters to mud sculpting. A stall was manned at Combs Fete where one of our benches was raffled. The Heritage Open Afternoon was attended by 40+ visitors on a gloriously sunny day. The repairs to the rest area at the back of the barn have progressed with the basic timber frame in place, the roof up with wattle and daub insulation and a mixture of glass and conventional pantiles. Site maintenance has been a priority over the summer months with pond clearance, ditch digging plus stingers, brambles and grass to control. This has provided lots of greenery for our compost bins, so much so that we’ve had to build more. Come and help us celebrate our 8th birthday at Offton Village Hall on Saturday 7th November. There’s always something going on at Orchard Barn so why don’t you pay us a visit? Come along any Wednesday, we are SW of Mill Road, Battisford or visit our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473 658193.

4 LIFE LANDSCAPES

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts Roses are one of the joys of the garden, and have quite long lives. However eventually they seem to deteriorate and need to be replaced. Replacing roses is not straightforward because new roses do not seem to like being replanted in soil that has been growing roses. If you need to do this Beales Roses recommend planting the new rose in fresh soil inside a large cardboard box. The idea is that by the time the cardboard box has rotted the new rose will be well established. It is also a good idea to use micorrihzal fungus when doing the planting. This friendly fungus which usually comes in a sachet helps the new roots to establish. I had 2 roses in my garden which I bought in about 1960. They survived two house moves, but one died last year. I rather like the variety which is called "Lilac Rose" and was introduced by a now defunct rose nursery near Bristol run by John Sanday, but it no longer appears to be available. Happily there is a solution. The rose plants that one normally buys consist of the variety that one wants, budded onto a briar root stock. This technique suits the rose growers who need to produce thousands of plants per year, but most roses will grow quite happily on their own roots, so if one has a plant that one likes one can propagate it using cuttings. For roses one needs mature wood from the current years growth, cut after the leaves have dropped. A stem that has flowered is ideal, and a long stem will provide three or four cuttings since each cutting only needs to be about 6 inches long. If you fancy doing this I suggest you read it up in a book or on the internet, but it really works. I now have a flower on the "Lilac Rose" cutting that I took last March. My dahlias which were very slow getting going this year are at the moment flowering magnificently, but by the time you read this may have been brought to a stop by frost. Most years we get the first significant frost sometime in November. Weather Records In September at Kersey there was 58.6 mm (2.3") of rain which is a bit more than average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of September was 181.7 mm (7.2") which is again just a bit more than the average figure. In September the maximum temperature was 20 Cel (68F) which is lower than usual. The minimum temperature was 8 Cel (46F) which is a couple of degrees higher than average. Hints November is a good month to have a tidy up. Clear the dead plants out of those containers and baskets. Clean them up and put them away until next year. Clear leaves off of paths before people slip on them. If you only use a greenhouse for tomatoes clean it up and leave it tidy ready for the Spring. If you use your greenhouse throughout the year, the shading will need to be cleaned off, and the glass cleaned to give the best possible light to plants during Winter. There is still time to plant shrubs and fruit trees/bushes. If you are planting be generous in the space that you give them. It is easy for them to become overcrowded as they mature. Most of the 2016 seed catalogues are now available. Few of them now restrict themselves to seeds. They generally also offer "plug" plants, bulbs and perennials. As such the catalogues are a good read for the dark evenings. Now is about the right time to make an autumn sowing of one of the hardy broad beans like Aquadulce if you want to try it. The beginning of the month is still OK for planting sets of the Japanese onions. Enjoy your gardening, John Rye Enjoy your gardening, John Rye

Thinking of replacement windows, doors, fascia, soffits or conservatory?

THEN CALL US FIRST!! Kersey Mill Newsletter The lovely sunny days of the last Month have encouraged many visitors to the Mill. The Open Day was well attended with a steady flow of visitors who enjoyed seeing the wheel turning, the sun shone all day and the visitors not only enjoyed their tour of the Mill but were able to enjoy the sunshine and look around the grounds & gardens. It was with great pleasure to give the 41 Club of Hadleigh a guided tour and access one evening , so nice to hear so many of them recalling their memoirs of previous visits to the Mill, some of them going back to the 1960’s . More pleasing news was that listed building consent has been granted and the next phase of the restoration work is now underway. One of the first tasks was to repair the Mill original staircases which are similar to a ladder. Over the past 200 years they have suffered considerable wear with the Millers hob nail boots together with woodworm. Several treads have been worn and are thread bare. However they are extremely characterful and in preserving this they are being repaired sympathetically. Broken treads are being underlined with oak and carefully sculpted by Millwright Bill Griffiths in order to preserve the wonderful character. Handrails and balustrading have also been inserted due to the modern day health and safety requirements that were not need during the 1800’s. The handrails and balustrading have been created to blend in with the staircase. We are soon to take delivery of some massive pine timbers from Thetford forest, which has been slow grown; this is to be used for replacing the rotten upright posts that support the central valley. These will be installed hopefully before Santa and his Elves arrive Santa’s Workshop - a magical Christmas Experience every child will love: TICKETS ARE SELLING VERY FAST. Newton Green launches Special Initiative for Youngsters Youngsters up to the age of 11 are being given the opportunity to learn golf at one of Suffolk’s most successful centres for junior golf. Newton Green Golf Club has launched a new initiative which will give boys and girls their own set of clubs, lessons and a year’s club membership all for the price of £120. The scheme is among ideas launched nationally to bring more youngsters into the sport, and follows a recent Newton initiative involving the distribution via school to 500 golf themed posters by famous local cartoonist Barrie Appleby. Club professional and junior organiser Tim Cooper says the membership offer, including a set of clubs, has already had very successful launches at a handful of clubs across the country. He continued: “Our junior section is already a high flying part of the club, but there is a trend nationally for junior recruitment to decline. “We have come so far with our junior golf we have to ensure the legacy continues. With families thinking of ideas for Christmas presents for youngsters, what could be better than investing in a gift that could lead to enjoyment for a lifetime?” For further details contact 01787-377217 or tcoopergolf@aol.com

The Brendan Oakes Memorial fishing match took place on Saturday 25th July at Bullocky Fenn and was arranged with the kind permission of the Hadleigh And District Angling Society. The weather this year was a little cooler than in previous years with a bit of a breeze. The 16 anglers who participated raised £1200.00 for the Brendan Oakes Trust; £500.00 of which was raised by Mark Snowling through an on-line auction site in association with Snowy's Bait and Tackle shop. Thank you all for attending on the day and for all your hard work in helping to organize the event and for raising money throughout the year. The winner on the day was John McAndrew with Graham Pinnock and Mark Snowling a close second and third respectively. Next years match will be the tenth since we started in 2006 and we want to make it a memorable event, so keep the last weekend in July free to come along and fish for a local charity and enjoy a BBQ at the end of the day. Spanish Escuriola proves to be Stoke by Nayland’s queen of cool Natalia Escuriola kept her nerves in check and game together to ensure the WPGA International Challenge ended in a coronation and not a calamity at last week’s 3 day LET Access championship at the family owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa resort. The Spaniard’s wire to wire victory not only earned her â‚Ź4,800 but also fired her up to second place in the LET Access Series and Winner Natalia Escuriola with SbN ensured she will compete on the Directors Tamara Unwin main Ladies European Tour next and Susanna Rendall year. There were moments in the final round of the tournament at Stoke by Nayland however, when what appeared to be a canter to victory for the 21-year-old looked set to end in tears. Not least during the first four holes when Olivia Cowan, who pipped Escuriola for pole position in the LET Access Series Order of Merit, threatened to take the Gainsborough Course at the Suffolk resort apart. Cowan, a teenager with a British father, Scottish sounding name and BBC accent who represents Germany as a result of spending her 19 years there, began birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle. All of which meant the meaty five stroke lead Escuriola enjoyed at the start of play was reduced to an anorexic one. But in the end Cowan shared third place with France’s Ariane Provot after a two-under-par round The top five Order of Merit players of 70 and Raastad finished second proudly display their 2016 Ladies on six-under. European Tour cards in the 18th The top five Let Access Order of green bunker Merit professionals were also awarded their Tour cards which qualify them to join the main Ladies European Tour for the 2016 season; namely Escuriola, Cowan, Gutavsson, Gabsa and Bakker. The 3 day event kicked off as usual with a Pro Am tournament featuring some well known faces such as National Broadcaster Naga Munchetty, who is a spokesperson for the national “thisgirlgolfsâ€? campaign, and who conducted a live interview with the BBC Look East studio just before the Pro Am Gala Dinner. BBC’s Stewart White and musical personality, Neil Innes also Naga Munchetty and Stewart White on participated in the Pro Am, and the 1st tee for the SbN Pro Am with dinner guests and players were Pro Hannah Ralph and Lisa entertained with a string of amazing magic feats by internationally renowned magician, David Redfearn. After play on the 2nd day the Spanish Professionals, including eventual winner Natalia, took some time out to enjoy a tour of the SbN family’s award-winning Peake Fruit orchards and cold stores nearby with Farms Director Robert England and were very interested in tasting the different varieties of English apples on offer. On the final day Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk County girls squads of all ages were treated to some golf clinics by Head Professional Roly Hitchcock and 3 of the Ladies European Tour professionals. Leading scores: 1 Natalia Escuriola (Spain) - 8; 2 Rachel Raastad (Norway) 6; 3 Ariane Provot (France), Olivia Cowan (Germany) - 5; 5 Noemi Jimenez (Spain), Georgia Hall (England) - 4; 7 Johanna Gustavsson (Sweden) - 3; 8 Valdis Thora Jonsdottir (Iceland), Bethan Popel (A) (England) - 1.

Hintlesham Ladies Celebrate 10 Years

The ladies section at Hintlesham Golf Club celebrated 10 years together on Thursday 1st October. The ladies marked the occasion with an invitation day, organised by Karen Perridge and Alison Mitchell along with help from Amanda Mok, Mary Gale and Sue Ashton who were the original 5 members back in 2005 and still involved with the ladies section. The ladies section got off to a very slow start in the early days but the earlier members stuck with it and over recent years a substantial increase in numbers has been seen. The club is proud to now have a thriving ladies section. The Invitation Day consisted of 55 ladies participating in the day with 52 playing 18 holes of golf on a glorious sunny day, followed by prosecco and canapés whilst watching The KC Golf Show (Trick Show Specialist Kevin Carpenter) after which they enjoyed a meal, presentation and a raffle. Prizes were donated to raise money for Kevin’s chosen charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer - raising £374.00. 1st Prize was won by Jane Davis and guest Christie Sanders – donated by the owner of the club, Henry Roblin. 2nd Prize Brenda Penton & guest Vera Pender – donated by members Ali Mitchell, Sue Ashton, Amanda Mok & Mary Gale 3rd Place Caroline Turner & guest Sandra Clark 4th Place Amanda Mok & guest Pat Smith 5th Place Ali Mitchell & guest Lesley Garnett The ladies would like to thank Henry Roblin, Phil Westley, Joe Cardy, Alistair Spink, the original members and Adrian Quinn for donating some A golf themed cake was magnificent and very generous prizes, Kevin made and donated by KP's Cakes from The KC Golf Show for the entertainment and Karen Perridge from KP’s Cakes for donating and making fabulous golf themed cakes. A busy few months at Hadleigh Tennis Club Following on from the successful Great British Tennis Day in June the Club have had some more enjoyable event this summer. The annual challenge match against Bildeston Tennis Club (played at Hadleigh this year) resulted in wins for both the men’s and ladies teams to hold the trophy for another year. A new family tournament (parent and child doubles matches) in August saw Richard and William Wright from Cornard Tye finally clinched victory in spite of a stiff challenge from Teams Yannaghas and Wrigley, the latter having ventured all the way from Surrey! It was sufficiently supported to warrant a repeat in 2016 when the entry criteria will be more flexible to encourage entries from different adult/child pairs. At the end of September there was the President’s Day, postponed from earlier in the year due to bad weather. A fun event of doubles matches for men and ladies where players change partners and the final result depends on games won by each individual. This year’s winner was Eunice Scott, getting her name on the Ken Goddard Memorial cup for the first time. The event was followed by an enjoyable buffet lunch provided by the competitors and refreshments courtesy of the Club’s President Finally congratulations to the Club’s Mixed doubles and Ladies doubles teams who scored very well in the local tennis leagues this summer. As Winter approaches the club’s sessions continue on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. Visit our website www.hadleightennis.org.uk, or if you have any queries please email to hadleightennis@gmail.com, or text Bryan Walls on 07714 484842

Hadleigh Carpet Bowls Club A quieter month in terms of league fixtures will allow us to fit in our own club singles and pairs competitions. Even so, there are challenging away fixtures in October at Bealings (9th October) and Shotley (26th October) before a number of our members travel to Potters for what will undoubtedly be a thoroughly enjoyable break with a carpet bowls theme as the main attraction. If you are interested/intrigued and wish to have a go at carpet bowls come along to the Beaumont School on a Thursday evening 7 – 10pm.

Hole in One at Stoke by Nayland Pete Harris playing in the Stoke by Nayland October Medal on the Gainsborough Course was not having a very good day until he birdied the 17th Hole. He then stood on the tee of the 18th Hole, which is a difficult Par 3 across water, and decided to take his 4 Iron as the hole was playing a full 200 yards. To his delight Pete watched the ball land on the green and roll into the hole. The 8 handicapper celebrated his third hole in hole with drinks all round in the clubhouse.
