Hadleigh RFC and Wattisham Station join forces for charity... An invitational Hadleigh RFC XV and Army Air Corp XV took to the pitch recently at Layham Road Sports Ground to compete in the inaugural Bungle Memorial Cup match. A total of £2,500 was raised for TSSS (Turner Syndrome Support Society) and the Lainey Walters Trust. Hadleigh RFC emerged winners (36-32) in a game that proved highly competitive and entertaining throughout. The Cup match also proved the perfect draw for a large crowd of supporters keen to honour the memory of Cpl James ‘Bungle’ Walters who lost his life in Afghanistan earlier this year. The Cup match was just one of the highlights arranged in a full afternoon and evening of fundraising. Live entertainment was provided by Wattisham Military Wives Choir in a very moving set and by the brilliant, Zoe and the Pulse. A pitch side bar, BBQ, match commentary, raffle, guest ales, karaoke and lots of other activities for the kids also helped us to persuade parents to register their children for the new season. Servicemen, players, supporters and even passers-by came along and joined in the fun. Commenting on the day, Charlie Warburton, Chairman, Hadleigh RFC, said “This has been an absolutely wonderful day. We are all very happy and proud to have been able to honour James’ memory in such fitting style and with such emphatic support from our local Community and friends at Wattisham Station, Bungle's family and, of course, Tracey and Lainey Walters”.

Jenny, Helen, Charles jnr and family would like to convey sincere thanks to the overwhelming number of people who attended Charles’ funeral. It was lovely also to see so many for afternoon tea. He would of approved! Our appreciation also for the memories, cards and letters of comfort and condolence. Charles would have been surprised and flattered by the warmth of feeling shown to him and the family. Our sorrow knows no bounds, but our comfort is knowing so many care. Thank you, Jenny and family

Airport & Seaport Specialists Riding high on the recent success of Whatfield in ‘Suffolk Village of the Year’ the community didn't let us down and we had a wonderful turn out again. So on the 13th Sept we all set off from St Margaret's Church via the Salvation Army to Elmsett. We visited the Methodist Church and St Peters, both of which gave us a wonderful welcome with well earned biscuits and drinks to keep the cyclists going. We then all headed off to Naughton Church and arrived on mass for more refreshments and a good look around the churchyard to reminisce. A few of us then said our goodbyes but the remainder carried on to Nedging and Semer Church which totalled just over 15 miles in 3.5 hours. All in all a wonderful bike ride with only 2 early dismounts and 1 puncture and over £500 raised to be split between the charity and church of your choice. I would like to thank all those people that took part on the day, whether that be cycling or the volunteers who man the churches to sign the forms. Everyone played their part in what turned out to be a great day. Mark Butcher (Whatfield local co-ordinator)
Friends of Hadleigh Library The Friends group has had a busy and successful summer. There were two puppet based events for children. The Norwich Puppet Theatre presented The Pied Piper at the United Reformed Church with a follow-up craft session at the library. Later in August Sara Holman from the Suffolk Wildlife Trust led a puppet making workshop using old socks and natural materials. It was a great success with over 50 children taking part over a two hour session, with all that hard work everyone was glad of the refreshments! Looking ahead local author Nicola Upson will be at the library giving a talk on Friday November 14th, look out for more details nearer the time. If you would like to find out more about the Friends group or would like to be involved, please come along and enjoy a glass of wine at our AGM on Wednesday October 8th at 7.00pm in the library.

Hadleigh Year of The Sheep 2015 What is round-ish and fluffy and is the reason Hadleigh exists? You’re right…sheep. It was the woollen cloth trade which made Hadleigh famous. Sheep escapades will start at the Hadleigh Show on 16th May and end with sheep herded through the town to a Grand Finale at St. Mary’s Church on September 26th. In between there will be events, competitions, shows, a celebration of Hadleigh’s history and silly sheep fun for everyone to get involved in, from children to pensioners. This will be a community event supported by Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce. The High Street will be the focus for all things sheep but it is hoped that all groups and organisations in the town will join in. If you have any ideas towards making 2015 a memorable Sheep year or would like to be involved in decorating the town or help in any way please contact: Jane Haylock at The Idler, 37 High Street, Hadleigh. e-mail jane@theidler.plus.com or phone 01473 827752

Polstead Art Group Art Exhibition 2014 Our art exhibition was more successful than ever this year so a very big “thank you” to all who came along. It’s also encouraging to read the comments in the visitors book and we are grateful to all who took the time to write them. It also gives great pleasure to us to see so many friends meeting and enjoying the exhibition as a social event, some having come quite a distance. It all adds up to a lovely atmosphere so again, thank you all for coming. Pat Brown

The Rosa Simon Music Fund now stands at close to £7500! Thanks to absolutely everyone who has contributed to the Fund, with especial honourable mentions to the staff, pupils and parents of St. Mary’s Primary School who raised an amazing £865 (see photograph), Tori, the landlady at The George who kindly handed over all her World Cup sweepstake winnings of £486.50 and our daughter Millie and her small army of helpers who persuaded many dear people to contribute over £222 in return for cakes and other goodies! By the time you read this, we will have had our meeting with local schools, churches, playgroups and registered child minders aimed at identifying the main ways in which the Fund will achieve its aims of giving local children and young people more musical opportunities. Whatfield is proud to be Suffolk’s Village of the year 2014
GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard at the Office

Whatfield has been an amazing place to be over the summer – having entered and proudly won the title of Suffolk Village of the Year 2014. This all took place over the past few months with the first judges arriving in June, when we won the Babergh Village of the Year 2014 award. This led to two further visits from more judges during July and August and culminated in the announcement of the winning village live on Radio Suffolk in September. For this we had a group of villagers nervously waiting in the village hall, along with the children from Whatfield Primary School, all with their ear to the radio and a telephone link up. As (eventually) it was announced the first place was to Whatfield, the hall was filled with a mighty cheer, which the whole of Suffolk must have heard over the airwaves! There were also a few tears but these were quickly wiped away for a celebratory photo on the village green! The groups of judges had all visited our village to see the various amenities, from allotments to the village hall and lots in between! They met a cheery gathering of people from all of the village’s various committees, clubs and groups who assembled in the Salvation Army Hall; to have a friendly chat about the variety of things to do here and what a great place Whatfield is to live. Several of the judges even said they would love to buy a house and move here – such was the impression Whatfield made on them. So in true Whatfield spirit, the presentation of the award in October will turn into a party to celebrate our village hall’s 40th birthday. All residents are invited and are welcomed to have a say in what’s best to spend the prize money on

Dear readers, it is strange how things happen. I was on the way to my hairdressers which is James Daniel at 20 High Street, Hadleigh (Tel. 01473 823616) who by the way takes a great deal of time and care and produces a very neat finish. I am a walking testament to James’ work! This journey was only a few strides up the High Street and so I decided to take the air and to leave Frank, my chauffeur, behind. My readers often approach me when I am out; they can’t believe that I am real! Sure enough a gentleman stopped me and suggested that I may like to go to the Hadleigh Community Choir Concert in St Mary’s Hadleigh the following evening. As the concert was of light music (a term that is no longer in common parlance) comprising many of the well known songs from World Wars 1 and 2, I thought that it would be “right up my street”. Such a lot of work had gone into the occasion and I take my hat off to the Choir’s Director, Simon Thompson for everything that he must have done. The accompanist was excellent and so was the opera singer Maggie Addison. There was a war time Jeep at the door. But I did not enjoy it as much as I should. The dreadful state of St Mary’s did not help with next to no pews, old plastic chairs, clapped out lounge suites, pool tables and such like. We could have done without the comedian and I wished the large Choir (so well presented in black with light blue accessories) had projected its enthusiasm to the audience through a much larger sound. Maria was delighted to find that Frank’s pumpkins are enormous; in fact she can hardly manage them on her own. I know that some splendid soups will be on the menu for Halloween. I have continued to be really busy with our conveyancing business. You may wish to give some thought as to how you hold property jointly whether as “beneficial joint tenants” where the property will pass to the survivor or as “tenants in common” where you will each have an individual share. The latter can make life more difficult for a body seeking to put a mortgage on a property against, say, nursing home fees. I have had various approaches from people who have had very difficult experiences when using “on line” conveyancing providers. Do use a local “high street” firm which can provide the service that you are expecting. A Lasting Power of Attorney is so important to have in place as many of you have found so do come to see me. There is something of a procedure involved but we can make that as straightforward as possible for you. Howard Gibbons

Hadleigh Evening WI At the September meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI a minutes silence was observed to remember Elizabeth Cage who died recently. Liz had been on the Committee for several years. In summer she entertained members to afternoon tea in her home in Layham where the more energetic had enjoyed a ramble round the nearby countryside. The President welcomed visitors Paula Roberts and Janet Carter. She then reminded members of some of the many events we have enjoyed together this summer. These included visits to the Beth Chatto garden and Hampton Court. We joined Polstead WI for their 100th anniversary party. Some members attended a meeting at the Quaker house, to learn the principles of their faith. A few took the opportunity to learn and practice basic archery. (See picture) The speaker was Dr Gurpreet Singh. He started his power point presentation started with a picture Taj Mahal Agra built in 17th century by the Mughal emperor in memory of his third wife. Gurpreet and his wife Hema, who were both born in England, met on a blind date. To satisfy his family and comply with Indian culture and his religion, the first ceremony was held in a Sikh temple. Hema’s family are Hindu and a second ceremony was held in a Hindu temple. The traditional outfits were silk mainly white red and gold. At the receptions a vegetarian meal was served on banana leaves. Any food left was given to the poor. Finally they had a civil ceremony. Joan Rudman gave the vote of thanks complimenting Dr Singh on the beautiful photographs and giving one of the best talks we have ever had. Next meeting will be held on 21 October 2014 in the Seminar suite above the Hadleigh library starting 7.30pm. A harvest supper prepared by the members will be served. Visitors and new members are welcome. For further information please contact Philippa Carruthers phil.carruthers40@hotmail.co.uk or 01473 823057

Littlegarth School Early Years and Foundation Stage is Outstanding in all aspects as graded by the by the Independent Schools Inspectorate
The staff, children and parents of Littlegarth School are celebrating an outstanding inspection result following a visit to the school by the Independent Schools Inspectorate at the end of the summer term. Littlegarth is an independent co-educational school for children between the ages of 2½ and 11. Situated just outside Colchester in 30 acres of beautiful Stour Valley land, the school delights in providing a broad and balanced curriculum to children from North Essex and Suffolk. The Littlegarth Nursery and Reception classes have always worked together closely to provide an excellent introduction to the children’s learning journeys and in recent years the staff have initiated numerous developments which have added to this stimulating educational experience. The interior of the Nursery building has been restructured to allow more freedom of movement and outdoor learning areas have been expanded. Exciting new resources have ensured that staff are always able to plan a wide range of learning activities, both indoors and outside. The ISI inspection focussed on four key areas: • How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend • The contribution of the early years provision to children’s well being
• The leadership and management of the early years provision and • The overall standards of the early years provision. In each category Littlegarth was graded as Outstanding and the pre-inspection questionnaire to parents also highlighted that “parents are overwhelmingly pleased with what the setting offers their children”. Head of EYFS, Sharon Bennett is delighted with the inspection result. She says: “The staff team has worked extremely hard to create an exceptional learning environment and we’re delighted that ISI has recognised what an excellent start our children experience at Littlegarth”. Littlegarth School has achieved considerable success across a range of activities in recent years. The school has an excellent record of Grammar School entry results and over the past four years, eighty Littlegarth children have gained Scholarships to independent senior schools. Boys’ and girls’ sports teams have won numerous tournaments and achieved success in national finals while a keen focus on the arts helps to ensure that children are given every opportunity to discover creative and performing talents. A full copy of the EYFS and the whole school inspection reports can be found on the Littlegarth School website at www.littlegarth.essex.sch.uk/home/inspection-reports/ If you would like to visit Littlegarth to see our vibrant and happy learning environment for yourselves please telephone 01206 262332 to make an appointment or email office@littlegarth.essex.sch.uk For further details regarding this article, please contact: Peter Jones, Headmaster, Littlegarth School, Horkesley Park, Nayland, Colchester, CO6 4JR. 01206 262332 head@littlegarth.essex.sch.uk

BUMPER DAMAGED IN A CAR PARK?
Autumn warning from motoring experts!
Then you should call...
Most motorists understand that keeping car paintwork in good condition prevents rust, both extending the life of their car and maintaining its value. However, whilst repairing major damage is a must, minor damage such as scratches, scuffs and bumps are often left, either due to concerns about cost, or the inconvenience of having the car off the road for a couple of days or more in a body shop. However, as autumn and winter approach, motoring experts agree that minor damage can turn into a major headache. Stewart Topp, AA Patrol of the Year advises, “Check for stone chips as rust forms very quickly in the cold, damp weather,” while Mike Gilderson of Scuffs and Scrapes, adds, “It certainly pays to repair even small scuffs and scratches, as these can spread into larger areas of rust, ultimately costing you dearly if left untreated.” “As the AA points out, it’s a smart move, to get your car repaired if you have any form of minor damage to your paintwork,” advises Mike Gilderson of Scuffs and Scrapes. “Whether a scratch, scuff, chip or dent, a cosmetic repair will not only make sure your car looks good, but will seal the area of damage, making it weatherproof and prevent rust setting in. If you leave it, the rust will eventually lead to corrosion which could ultimately result in a more extensive – and expensive – repair!” Mike uses a special system developed by ICI , which can repair small areas of damage within only a few hours and at a fraction of the cost of traditional body shop repair methods. What’s more, because Mike operates from a fully equipped mobile workshop, he can come to your home (or your place of work) and undertake the repair at your convenience, prolonging your cars life and improving its resale value. For further advice about winter motoring visit the AA website or, for a FREE no obligation estimate, with paintwork repairs starting from £65.00, contact Mike Gilderson at Scuffs and Scrapes on 01473 824909 or 07425 583478.

An Enormous Thank You! It’s been eight months now since we opened our own venture Hadleigh Hairloom, and thanks to the amazing support of all the wonderful people of Hadleigh we have gone from strength to strength. We would like to thank everybody for their support - local tradesmen, fellow local business’ - but most of all we want to offer an enormous and heart-felt thank you to our loyal, faithful and very patient clients. You, all of you, have taken the huge step with us and driven us forward in a way that we could never have imagined. We find ourselves working away in a happy, relaxed and extremely busy environment with people who are our community, and that feels truly amazing. We absolutely love doing what we do; so much so that we don’t even realise how the day is going by. But you’re all busy people too and so, with that in mind, we’d like to introduce another new team member. All together now…A huge welcome to SARAH!! Sarah is a highly accomplished stylist with many strings to her bow. She is a local girl, raised in Hadleigh, who has chosen to raise her own family here in the town, and has been working at the much exalted Clarice House spa salon for the last seventeen years – so we consider ourselves extremely fortunate that she now wants to work closer to home! We are certain that Sarah will be given the ever present warm welcome you - ‘Our Lot’ - never fail to extend. So, those of you who don’t already know her, come and meet her, you’ll all be very welcome – and the kettle will probably be on. All our very best, Sharron, Julie, Denise, Kiera and of course Sarah. Andrew’s Quality Butchers celebrate their 20th anniversary Many Hadleigh residents will agree that the high street has changed dramatically over the last twenty years- many shops have come and gone, the town’s population has grown rapidly, and residents have battled to keep Hadleigh’s unique charm against the growing power of the big supermarkets. There are however a few Hadleigh institutions that have remained throughout, such as Andrew’s Quality Butchers which this October celebrates a staggering 20 years service to the local community. Andrew himself was a newcomer to the town in 1994, having learnt his trade on Smithfield meat market in London and in his father’s butcher’s shop in Essex after leaving school. When the time felt right to start his own business, it was Hadleigh that Andrew settled on as the ideal location to move his young family to and set up shop. With just him, his retired father helping out part time, and a local butcher Jock to set up, it took a while to build up customer’s trust and confidence. This trust between butcher and customer is today what Andrew’s growing team thrives on. Not only can customers rely on the team for expert advice and a consistent high quality of meat, they know that Andrew’s is one of the spots on the high street where they will always be looked after. Because whether it be working to a budget on a large order for a work’s Christmas dinner, helping a lost vegetarian with what to buy for a family BBQ, or remembering what the family like to eat for the confused son that is sent in to get bacon and eggs for breakfast, the team really care about catering for each and every customer’s individual needs. This friendly team has of course grown from the days of father and son to encompass a large family of butchers both junior and senior. While Andrew has had the support of three master butchers who have helped shape the shop’s reputation for many years, they have all invested their time in teaching the skills of butchery and service to a younger generation who are now qualified and experienced themselves. As this team has expanded, Andrew’s wife Claire has also taken on a much larger role, from supporting the business behind the scenes in the office to now making the shop’s delicatessen and home cooked produce as well known and popular as Andrew’s meat counter. In our busy world where there isn’t always the time to cook golden sausage rolls, warm fresh bread, or comforting meat pies, Claire realises the importance, now more than ever, of providing the town with a quality product that customers really could pass as their own, fresh out of the oven. From humble beginnings Andrew’s commitment to local community and continual re-investment into the business has carved out a space for the local traditional butcher in Hadleigh’s continually evolving, modern high-street. 74 High Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk, IP7 5EF 01473 827720 | shop@andrewsqualitybutchers.co.uk www.andrewsqualitybutchers.co.uk

John taught for many years in comprehensive education and Hartlepool College of Art. Following this he took early retirement to concentrate on his own work. At the same time John moved to Spain and produced many oil paintings of which a firm of Spanish Solicitors bought five very large paintings of the Mar Menor and these are on display in the main reception area. This was followed by many sales to private collections and some small exhibitions in private venues in Spain. Recently he had a major exhibition in the new gallery in Mazarron of 100 pieces of work. This work was featured on Spanish TV (CANAL). His work has been published in books and magazines. His work on the mining theme has been reproduced in limited editions and sold in galleries, large department stores and libraries. The Waterwheel restoration is now in full swing. This month we were able to make a considerable step forward on the enormous task of restoring the waterwheel. Now that we can turn the wheel we have removed the corroded buckets so that they can be replaced. We are lucky to have Mill Wright, William (Bill) Griffiths leading the way. Bill amongst many other things is very experienced with a welding torch, some of the corroded buckets and nuts and bolts have needed burning out, a long, hard, time consuming process. Even when all the bolts are removed the buckets are a very tight fit and take considerable efforts to remove. The wheel now moves smoothly on its bearing but is so badly out of balance due to the inconsistent distribution of weight. As a result two pairs of block and tackle are used to turn the wheel and secure it from any unexpected movement whilst the team are working on it. The section of the wheel that spent the last 80 plus years at the bottom of the pit buried in water and slime has hardly rusted at all, it’s the buckets that have been in and out of water and exposed to the air that have corroded, twenty of them in total. We have had the new buckets cut and shaped from Corten Steel by Needham Fabrications, using a monster of a machine, a Bystronic Pressbrake that is capable of delivering 400 tons, they only needed to use a mere 200 tons to shape our buckets. Many thanks to Kevin, Mick, Beckie and Rob for all their help and advice. Picture is of Rob Cooper with the first of the new buckets. Needham fabrications have managed to replicate the shape and it’s fair to say they look amazing. Over half the starts on the entire wheel have broken so before the new buckets can be replaced repairs are required, To repair a set of starts and to replace a buckets takes approximately 20 man hours so quite a considerable amount of work required, however I am delighted to report that the first pair of starts were repaired this weekend and the first of the new buckets is fitted and it looks amazing! Corten steel is an incredible hard material that will rust on the surface however due to its chemical composition is far less corrosive than other steels making ideal for this task. A large proportion of the cost of the Corten steel has been covered by the fund raising events held by the friends of kersey mill such as Santa’s workshop that proved incredibly popular last year, so much so it will be repeated this year and tickets will go on sale mid-October. Spaces are limited so do book early. If you have been to Kersey Mill recently you may well have noticed that the exterior joinery repairs are still ongoing.

Preparing for Autumn at Orchard Barn We have a range of opportunities for volunteers this autumn and winter. We continue to work outside when the weather allows, and our volunteers can learn a variety of conservation skills, including hedge renovation, making deadwood screens, compost making (you may be surprised to know there is both art and science involved) and constructing /maintaining ditches, to name but a few. We welcome volunteers every Wednesday, and occasionally on other days, so please let us know in advance you will be coming. We encourage car sharing where possible. Our Access to the Orchard project continues over the next 2 months, and we will soon be making hand-rails for our wheelchair-friendly boardwalk, so there will be opportunities to use a pole lathe, as well as greenwood working. Our next dates are Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October, 9.30am to 4pm, and if you can join us for either of these days, please contact us to confirm. These are run as FREE Community Workshops thanks to funding from the Awards for All scheme from the Big Lottery, as reported in the Bury Free Press on 17 August. For more information about all our courses and activities please see our website at www.orchardbarn.org.uk or you can email sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or call her on 01473 658193 / 07766 054042 We look forward to welcoming you to our lovely Orchard Barn!

Hey ho Folks, some of these Autumn mornings have a nip in them - really encourages a chap to take an extra five minutes, except Mum's foot is still behind me, pushing me out of the door. Mind you I had the last laugh yesterday, it took her two hours to find her spectacles in front of the Rayburn! While preparing the garden for winter, remember to check the bonfire for hedgehogs before you light it. They will be looking for a good place to sleep and they are becoming very scarce so please keep these creatures safe. If you plan to celebrate Guy Fawkes night, how about taking the family along to a locally organised display? You will enjoy a good show for less expense or worry whilst helping to cut down the number of pops and bangs that terrify many wild and domestic animals. It's lovely when another animal leaves us for a new home but sad that some are left "on the shelf". Feline pals, Ace (black) and Bella (tabby), are a friendly, loving pair that have been overlooked for seven months. They spring to the door when people appear, eager to start a new life. I really hope someone comes for them soon and for Tabby and white mother and daughter, Sally and Socks who have waited even longer. Thanks to those who attended our events last month, over £500 was raised and we have received lots of lovely cat and dog food via our collection bins in various shops and offices. Still to come is our big sale at The Old School, Long Melford on 12th October and our Christmas Fair at Leavenheath Village Hall on 23rd November. I can't wait to run off with the decorations when the girls start sorting them. You can be sure when things go missing, they've been pinched by me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

Sudbury to the Sea Canoe Event Saturday 13 September saw some 290 craft launch from The Granary in Quay Lane, to make their way over two days, to reach the Cattawade Barrage on Sunday afternoon. This was the River Stour Trust’s annual event, Sudbury to the Sea (S2C as it is affectionately called by regular participants!). The aim of the event is to encourage people to get afloat, to use and enjoy the River Stour and to maintain the right of navigation along the river. The funds raised by the event are put to good use in looking after the river, and helping to restore and refurbish the locks which the Trust looks after. This year the craft included two coracles (regular participants) and some six paddle boards, as well as the odd row boat and canoes of all shapes and sizes. The participants ranged in age from 4 to – well it’s not polite to ask someone’s age, is it? Most of them completed the 24.5 mile course in good order, having refreshed themselves at various watering points along the way, and camped overnight at Rushbanks Farm in Wissington. The event was manned by some 60 volunteers, members of the Trust, who form a complex team to ensure that the event runs safely and smoothly, supported by the Environment Agency, and some friends of members. Tasks included paperwork, manning portages, paddling the sweeper boats to make sure no-one was left behind, brewing cups of tea at the beginning, middle and end, not to mention the bacon sandwiches at the start and on Sunday morning. Photos courtesy Nick Moore Following this year’s event, plans are already afoot to do it all again in 2015 – the proposed dates are 11 and 12 September. Watch the Trust’s website for more details of this and other events www.riverstourtrust.org.

The Hadleigh Historian: Issue 24 (October – November 2014) The front cover of this issue features the 18th century milestone obelisk, which is still at the centre of Hadleigh but not in its original position, which is shown in the views looking south and north along High Street. The series ‘Lords of the manor’ starts with the manor of Toppesfield Hall, the extent of its former jurisdiction over part of Hadleigh is shown on a map. The story is mostly of absentee landlords living on estates elsewhere but, nevertheless, they were people who shaped Hadleigh in various ways. For example, in the centre of town, they were responsible for setting out the original market place and on the river, they moved the crossing from beside Toppesfield Mill to a position further north and built Toppesfield Bridge. In 1730, the manorial rights were purchased by Grace, dowager countess of Dysart, and with permission from the National Trust, a copy of her portrait accompanies the article. Not until 1880 did a lord of the manor, Hadleigh solicitor Charles Grimwade, live in the manor house and it is one of his descendants who holds the manorial title today. As well as dusty court rolls and old title deeds, a wealth of local records have been consulted, which also throw light upon other aspects of Hadleigh’s history. Articles in earlier issues of the magazine have promoted readers to contact the Editor with follow-up information. Sharon Seager of Hadleigh saw ‘A Hadleigh lad goes to war’ (Issues 22 and 23), in which Frederick Holbrow related his war-time experiences including the decision made in early 1939 that he and his friend Felix Mowles should join the RAF. Sharon is Felix’s niece and has kindly loaned family papers and photographs from which his story is told. Also, Issue 22 featured the first and last trains at Hadleigh station in 1849 and 1965 respectively. Jeff Ward of Stanway in Essex has sent details concerning himself as the last station master and of Henry Ward as the first. Although they have the same surname, Jeff says he cannot find a family connection. Roger Kennell of Hadleigh returns to the pages of The Hadleigh Historian with ‘ St Mary’s church: analysis of the external fabric’. At first, this does not seem to be the most thrilling of subjects but if you have ever been on one of Roger’s guided walks around Hadleigh, you will know that you can never again passby a brick wall without giving it a second look. So too with St Mary’s church, as here he points out the meaning behind re-used pieces of building material, particularly burnt clay in the form of bricks and tiles. Not only are they old, possibly of Saxon or even Roman origin, but their re-use in medieval times to help create the walls of the parish church suggest local activity during Roman and Saxon times that little is known about. Roger’s colour photographs will start you off on your ‘I-Spy’ trail around the building. Finally, the career of Frank Ling is the subject of ‘A shop in the High Street: early days at the Co-op’. He started as a shop-boy here in 1898 and eventually became manager of the branch in 1923. His memories and those of his son Sidney, who was brought up in the flat over the shop, have been published separately but are now put together to give an insight into the life behind the counter during the first half of the 20th century. Is your organisation ‘Disabled – Friendly’? We are often told that our population is ageing and now we ‘baby boomers’ are of retirement age, are those with disabilities and age-related problems really being catered for? A disability of any kind can leave a person feeling excluded when they can’t quite heat or can’t quite see what is going on; can’t stand for long or can’t even access the event. It should be necessary for groups, clubs, societies, in fact all organisations, to think ‘disabled’ when setting up their meetings. Is the venue accessible to people with walking aids. Even a very short flight of steps can render anywhere inaccessible to someone with a walking stick. Many organisations will have former members who have dropped out because they can’t get in the building but that should not be the case. Is the room arranged so that those people with partial hearing or partial vision can know what is going on and take part? There is no use being stuck at the back where even the best speakers cannot throw their voices or the best of visual aids make no difference to reduced vision, so leave front row seats for those who really need them. Are the toilets accessible? Is there room to take a walking aid into the cubicle and, if the toilet seat is low, is there a small support rail and not just the looroll holder to grab hold of? For nearly thirty years, I took a very active part in local society but when arthritis got the better of me, I had to resign as I was no longer able to gain access the meetings. I did enquire whether a more convenient venue was being contemplated but was told that was not on the books. I have now joined a similar society with a very different attitude. I receive a warm welcome to every meeting, where a seat has been reserved for me. When refreshments are served, they are brought to me (perhaps they don’t want me spilling coffee on the floor). One kind lady whispered that, if necessary, she would stand guard at the unlocked toilet door in case I needed assistance. So, with just a bit of thought on the part of organisers, it is possible to be ‘disabled-friendly’. It may even boost your membership! Sue Andrews

61st Burstall Show
Bury St Edmunds 01284 754017
We’ e 24 s a y eastofengland.coop/funerals
For this years Show held on Saturday 2nd. August, the number of exhibitors was slightly reduced following our Jubillee Show in 2013. In spite of this and a difficult growing season there were several quality exhibits which caught the eye of the Judges. Entries in the vegetable section were of a very high standard, and John Mower from Hintlesham won the Class Cup, the award for the Best Vegetable entry in the Show and the Extreme Vegetable award. Kate Woodward led the contest for the Burstall Vegetables. Hugh Richards won the Cup for the Open Flowers and best Flower Exhibit. The Flower Arranging Class was won by Jane Fiske, with Ann Burchnall winning the cup for the best Flower Arranging exhibit. There were very strong entries in the Preserves, Cookery and Handicrafts sections, and these were much praised by the Judges. Ann Burchnall won the Preserves and Burstall Cookery Cups, and Jane Sago from Bramford the Open Cookery Cup. Anna Cooper was the winner of the Open Handicrafts. There were good entries in the Children’s Classes, and the enthusiasm of those competing augurs well for the future. Ruby Shaw, Charlie Woolf, and Ben Debman won the Children’s trophies for their respective age groups, and the best exhibit in these classes was won by Naomi Cornish Musical entertainment was provided by the Frog Island Jazz Band in the Village Hall grounds. Several Classic Vehicles present brought back happy memories to many, and displays given by the Five Rivers Dog Agility Club demonstrated the considerable skills of dogs and their owners to great effect. Such a happy day does not happen by accident. Much hard work was expended by many people to achieve yet another great success. Thanks go to all who kindly and cheerfully helped and contributed. Special thanks to the sponsors, to the stewards, judges and exhibitors of the Flower Show, to donors of Grand Draw Prizes, bottles for the tombola and other items for sale on the stalls. Thanks also to those who prepared the showground, organised, erected and helped with side shows, and last but not least to those who contributed food and served refreshments throughout the day, and to those who washed up and cleared up at the end. The standard of food, much of it donated, was excellent and as always is a marvellous credit to the limited resources of the small parish of Burstall. Those who worked so hard to provide and serve lunches, teas, BBQ food, ice creams, cakes and drinks throughout the day really do deserve special praise. Trophies were presented by the President of the Show to the very worthy prize winners, and the Show concluded with an auction of surplus produce (kindly donated by exhibitors) .Our small village is very grateful to the support given to this event which raised over £2000 in aid of our Village Hall to go towards the continuing burden of its care and maintenance We shall now start preparing for next year’s Show, which will be held on Saturday 1st August 2015. Latest from Home-Start South Suffolk & District Phew, what a busy few months we have had and finally we are now able to share our wonderful news; we won the Lottery, well in fact we have been awarded a three year lottery grant for our joint work with Home-Start Mid Suffolk to deliver our Stepping Stones project, pushing further into West Suffolk, where currently there is a desperate need for our support. The grant came to a staggering £343,492, so for all of you who but a ticket each week, thank you, it really does get spent on worthwhile causes close to home. Whilst news of the lottery is great, we still have our day job, supporting families in the South Suffolk area. In August following a bequest, we were able to take a coach full of families from Gt Cornard, Sudbury, Hadleigh and Ipswich, along to Jimmy’s farm to spend the day enjoying and exploring every part of the farm, from the forest to the Hobbit House, the Butterfly House and some pond dipping. It was an opportunity for some children to do some fishing, den building, stoke a reindeer’s velvety antlers and play in the sand. Some of our fantastic volunteers gave up their day to accompany the families they support for which all the staff are so grateful. It was a wonderful day, well organised, with even the Beeston’s bus driver being pleasantly surprised at not having to wait for anyone, all were at the bus stops on time eager to get going. The drive home was quieter with many small people falling asleep, dreaming of turkeys, alpacas, cows, guinea pigs……. Special thanks must go to Jimmy’s farm who were so accommodating, ensuring all had a great day! We recently had even more good news, we have been shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2014 in the Ipswich community. By encouraging the public to vote HomeStart South Suffolk & District has a chance to be awarded a grant of up to £3,000 from Lloyds Bank to enable it to continue doing good work in our community. Following on from the success of this years’ outing, with £3000 we could ensure a family outing for the next two years along with Christmas parties for the families could take place. This year we could only afford to take a 53 seater coach which was oversubscribed, it would be lovely to be able to pay for a double decker enabling us to take yet more families. We operate three family groups in various parts of South Suffolk, £3,000 would pay for additional play equipment and materials to help prepare the children who attend get ready for the step to ‘big school’ or nursery. £3,000 would help to pay for two more new volunteer preparation courses. As we continue to move into different areas and the demand for our support within our core area grows, the need to recruit more volunteers is essential. Our volunteers visit families at home each week, supporting parents in situations as diverse as isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness, disability or who are just finding parenting a struggle. They provide non-judgemental practical and emotional support and help build the family’s confidence and ability to cope. £3,000 would ensure this service would continue in your area! The Lloyds Bank Community Fund was set up to help local people across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man to have a positive impact at the heart of their community by giving grants to up to 1,400 local good causes in 350 communities. There are four good causes shortlisted in each community and Lloyds Bank is inviting everyone to vote for the cause they’d most like to support. Members of the public can vote for their preferred community group on-line, by SMS or twitter, or in a branch of Lloyds bank from 2nd September to 10th October 2014. The branches able to take our nominations are Cornhill North, Cornhill South and Bramford Road, Ipswich. The local good cause that receives most votes in each community will receive an award of £3,000, with other groups receiving £2,000, £1,000 or £500 depending on the votes received. You can find out more about the Community Fund and Home-Start South Suffolk & District and cast your vote by visiting the Lloyds Bank Community Fund website at www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund.Don’t forget to vote by Friday 10th October. If you would like more information about Home-Start South Suffolk & District, or would like to become a volunteer, please contact, Sarah Mann, Scheme Leader, on 01473 822822 or email sarah@homestartsouthsuffolk.co.uk or visit www.homestartsouthsuffolk.co.uk

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Report Phew! Mr Micheal Perry the Product Development Manager of Thompson & Morgan Seeds, was the bare footed, hundred m.p.h. speaker, at the September meeting. He told us all about their seed production and development of new varieties and especially stressed the importance of material sent in to them by the general public, pointing out that "sports" do turn up from time to time and how valuable these are in the production of new colour ranges and/or leaf and petal shape or size and yes, they do pay for this help. As a self confessed vegaholic, I was disappointed in his lack of interest in vegetables unless they were in odd colours. Fancy saying, "Broad beans are broad beans and they all taste the same don't they?" I would personally dispute that and I'm sure that as one person prefers one type of flower over another, so vegetable growers detect subtle differences within varieties and have their own preferences. As a keen cook I am afraid I cannot get excited about the strange obsession with deep purple/black vegetables, flowers or fruit. As it is an acknowledged fact that we eat with our eyes as well as our taste, these odd colours don't make sense to me, how about you? I have been trialling seeds and plants for Gardening Which for many years so black tomatoes turned up years ago and, o.k. they tasted like tomatoes but looked frankly revolting whether cooked or raw! This is of course a purely personal opinion so I'm sorry if it sounds negative but I'd rather have my Mange Tout green rather than purple. Out next talk is "The Exotic Garden, Norwich" by Mr Will Giles on Monday 13th October and the competition is a specimen rose. Hope to see you there. Ruth Allen 822323

The trip was generously sponsored by Barbara who runs the Hadleigh Thrift Shop. This is one of the many, many kind donations made by Barbara to help families within the local area and beyond and is much appreciated. Poets Corner Chelsworth Common Above the smallest wood four buzzards turned, Beneath their wings the rising air As if the woodland colours burned To lift them high, to strata far and rare. Below four Suffolk tups together watched, Patient by the corner of the copse, To where the through path twisted out of sight, Among the purple sloes and hanging hips red bright. The valley flowed with rushes reeds and flags, Alders stood by splashy Carrs and snags. Knee deep in pasture ‘neath the wood The Red Poll cattle in Suffolk splendour stood. News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I am just back from a holiday in Meran in Northern Italy. Before I went away I picked some of my apples including Lord Lambourne, Tom Putt. and Forge, all interesting British varieties with distinctive flavours which I am looking forward to eating. In Britain a lot of orchards of similar varieties have been grubbed up so it is important to preserve such varieties in our gardens so that we can continue to enjoy them. In the Meran region you can see why we have lost our orchards, Every bit of land that is not growing grapes is growing apples. There are acres and acres of apples all grown intensively as vertical cordons with whole fields of a single variety. They are picking at the moment. The roads are full of tractors with trailers carrying a dozen boxes of apples weighing in total I guess about 6 tons. So please think about keeping our British varieties going by planting a tree or two of apples that you like in your garden. There are still nurseries offering a good range. I have bought from Deacons at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, or as another idea why not visit the big apple festival at the National Collection site at Brogdale near Faversham Kent on October 18/19. If that is a bit far Crown Nursery High Street Ufford also have an Apple Day on October 18. Open Gardens 12th October East Bergholt Place East Bergholt CO7 6UP Weather Records In August at Kersey there was 77 mm (3") of rain, which is about 50% more than our average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of August was 191.2 mm (7.5") which is about 1.5" higher than the average. In August the maximum temperature was 25 Cel (77F) which equals the lowest since 2000, and the minimum temperature was 7 Cel (45F) which is lower than average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 14 Cel (57F), which is typical for mid September. Hints By the end of October we may well have had the first frost, so it is time to think about getting any half hardy plants that you want to keep for next year under cover. It is also a good time to remove dead bedding plants, and have a tidy up. If you have put shading on your greenhouse for the Summer it should now be removed. Have a critical look at your garden and think how you could make it more interesting in October. There are not too many plants that flower at this time. Ones that do include heathers (calluna), some hebe and caryopteris. One can also get colour from berries, and Autumn foliage. Dahlias can be left until they have been cut down by the first frost. It is a good idea to check labels whilst they are still in flower. It is wise to at least have rooted cuttings of any other half hardy perennials which you grow. October is the month to finish planting bulbs for a Spring display. It is also a very good time for planting trees, shrubs and perennials. The soil is warm enough that new roots will be made to anchor the plants, and ensure a good start when the weather warms up in Spring. Happy Gardening, John Rye

Fidelis Activity News Community First Responders:There is a defibrillator on the outside wall of the Co-op but would you know when and how to use it? That was the challenge for Fidelis members at their last monthly meeting. Fortunately, Trevor and Yvonne, two dedicated local Community First Responders (CFR), were on hand to demonstrate this life-saving piece of equipment. After a brief introduction on the role of Demonstrating the use of a defibrillator and CPR Community First Responders, they went on to explain how to make use of the defibrillator in an emergency situation. Using a flexible dummy Yvonne deftly demonstrated how the patches should be applied and used in conjunction with CPR - Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and oxygen. It was clear that, while waiting for an Ambulance, the prompt use of the machine can really make a difference to a person’s chance of survival. All First Responders are volunteers, on call from their regular jobs and there is always a need for more people to join the Hadleigh team. When Trevor had answered the many questions he had one last request; that house numbers be clearly visible. This will avoid delay in an emergency. A donation was given to the local CFR group. Newton Green powered their way to victory in the final of the Suffolk Hambro Cup against Ipswich at Woodbridge. It may have taken 42 years to regain the county club team handicap competition since their last success, but Newton put their name back on the trophy in style. Leading by a narrow four holes after the morning foursomes, they turned up the heat to win by 17 holes in the afternoon, including an astonishing 10-hole victory as their final pair put the icing on the cake and underlined Newton’s superiority. With their women and juniors already having put trophies on the shelf in its recent rise up the Suffolk golf ladder, the club needed their men to come to the party. Last year they fell at the last fence as they narrowly missed winning the county Stenson team scratch final. Reaching the Hambro handicap final gave them a second chance to nail their colours to the mast, and they duly obliged with a 21-hole blitz against an Ipswich side able to draw from a selection of 60 players with handicaps of five or below. Under the team captaincy of nonplaying Ian Woodhead, who nurtured many of the young players now helping make the club a powerful force, Newton underlined they have the talent production line capable of further success. The victory was achieved with three juniors in the squad, and there are more waiting in the wings for future years. However, it was the experienced pairing of Mark Duthie and Simon Bearman who once again put points on the board in both the morning and afternoon rounds to consolidate the team performance. They were four up in the morning and three more after the afternoon round. The afternoon proceedings had been given the ideal start as the first pairing of Russell Oakey and Harvey Watts registered a four-hole win. Ryan and Connor Talbot crossed the line all square. The Duthie-Bearman double act shut the door, and by the time Greg Hills and Jed Seeley completed the 10hole demolition of their opponents the party had already begun. Suffolk Golf Union vice president Phil Platter handed Newton the cup. Morning: Russell Oakey and Harvey Watts all square with Daniel Hedges and Andrew Munrow, Ryan and Bob Talbot two down to James Tyler and Gregor Tait, Mark Duthie and Simon Bearman four up to Mark Thomas and Simon Godbold, Greg Hills and Connor Talbot two up to Jordan Nelli and Graham Wardley. Afternoon: Oakey and Watts four up to Hedges and Manro, Ryan and Connor Talbot all square with Thomas and Godbold, Duthie and Bearman three up to Tyler and Tate, Hills and Jed Seeley 10 up to Nelli and Wardley. Newton 21, Ipswich 0.
