EXCELLENT FARES RELIABLE SERVICE

Flock to Hadleigh High Street! At 9am on 26th September the created sheep on the High Street will be joined by the real thing when a flock of over 40 woolly beauties from Bridge Farm, Chelsworth will make their way down the Town’s main thoroughfare to the seclusion of St Mary’s Church Yard for the rest of the day. The safety and behaviour of the flock will be in the capable hands of the farm’s shepherd, Ed Hawkins, who is not only Chairman of the East Anglian Sheepdog Society but also part of ITV’s Flockstar team. This unique happening will mark the last day of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep celebrations which the town has embraced with gusto and enthusiasm following its launch at the Hadleigh Show in May. Since then there have been bunting-making workshops, concerts, talks, children’s activities, a Bo-Peep Picnic, Brett water rafting, quizzes, a film and sheep-making groups throughout the town and in Hadleigh schools. Once the sheep are safely grazing in St Mary’s church yard, the Grand Finale Day celebrations will begin in and around St Mary’s Church. Throughout the day, well known townsfolk will give costumed presentations entitled ‘We Are the Hadleigh Clothiers’ and there will be two lively performances in the Town from Morris Dancers. In the afternoon a children’s choir will entertain visitors and quiz lovers will finally hear which of the completed Ewe Know Quiz sheet qualifies for the cash prizes. Inside the church to enjoy at your leisure are three fascinating displays exploring Hadleigh’s Medieval Woollen-Cloth Industry, ‘We are Hadleigh Clothiers’ and Hadleigh’s Medieval Manor. Our thanks to all behind the scenes for making this community event possible and for giving Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015 such a memorable finale.

Tom McIntosh, conductor and concert pianist, founder of the prestigious and highly successful Hadleigh Summer Music International Festival, died on 10 July 2015. Born in 1938 in Washington DC Thomas McIntosh was educated at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City where he studied piano, and both choral and orchestral conducting. In 1971 a chance encounter with an old friend brought him to Hadleigh. He bought The Old School as a concert venue, and later added the Headmaster’s house next door which he and his wife Miranda, whom he married in 1982, turned into a cosy home. A series of highly varied, professional and entertaining three-week festivals of concerts took place there each July between 1978 and 2010 when failing health prevented Tom from continuing to run the event. The intimate concert hall added tremendously to the ambience of the performances as did the delightful private garden at the back of the house where patrons enjoyed programme intervals on warm summer evenings. Musical performances also took place at The Old School at other times of the year, most notably at Christmas and on occasions when opera was performed. BBC Radio Suffolk broadcast concerts from The Old School for several consecutive years. Tom travelled extensively during his musical career, performing in more than 70 countries. In later years, he made many trips to Spain, Germany, Malaysia, Japan and most importantly to China, well ahead of his time, forging strong links with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra which he directed on many occasions long before the present more relaxed contacts with that country were in place. He also received the accolade of conducting the world-famous Dresden Staatskapelle Orchestra before the Berlin Wall came down, a privilege rarely afforded to visiting musicians from the West. This unassuming, talented and highly educated man who made his home in Hadleigh for so many years was an adornment to the town. Quiet and softlyspoken, he was a collector of fine modern art, a great cook and a devoted lover of cats. One of them, “Mr Big”, was a familiar feature on concert evenings when he took it upon himself to patrol the seating area, ensuring all was well with the world. Tom’s funeral took place on 5th August at the United Reformed Church, Hadleigh, and was attended by his widow Miranda and many close friends. Everyone present was grateful for the legacy which he leaves behind in Hadleigh, his adopted home. P M Coombes and M H V Mcintosh

A group of local mums who regularly attend an adult dance class in Bildeston once a week are through to the semi-finals of Ipswich Has Got Talent! Most of the group have had no formal dance training and see their weekly class as an escape from all the monotomy that life has to throw at them; a time to forget about the stresses, let their hair down and have some fun! 'The Hot Mamas' as they are now known, were first formed when some of the class regulars had an opportunity to perform in front of a huge audience at a show in Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston; since then there has been no stopping them and they now regularly perform as a group at any given opportunity. Entering Ipswich Has Got Talent was the first competition as a group - and many were both very anxious and full of adrenalin; but once the music kicked in, they performed and entertained the judging panel and proved themselves worthy heat winners beating off lots of very talented competitors. The group from Bildeston, Chelsworth, Monks Eleigh and Hadleigh into the semi-finals consist of Debbie and Holly Bailey, Caroline Gage, Hayley Hynard, Tara Marshall, Rebecca Hiscock, Lorraine Pearce, Vicky Bolton, Lucy Hayward and Janet Mackie - who will all strut their stuff once again with a show stopping routine choreographed by Lesley Woods (Principal at Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts) on Sunday, 6th September at the Ipswich Regent - let's wish them well and hopefully we will see them into the finals! Go All The Way Hot Mamas!

Hintlesham Hall Hotel Kersey Mill Newsletter Works have continued on the exterior of the mill, the Lucum has had facia and weather boarding repaired and redecorated, the Lucum is the section at the front of the mill that extends forward and away from the main building with a trap door, its purpose is to enable sacks of grain to be lifted straight off the cart to the upper floor via the sack hoist. The sacks of grain had to be lifted to the top floor to allow gravity to help with the process of delivering the grain to the grind stones. The sack hoist lifts the sacks of grain using a series of pulleys, gears and a chain, a process which is all powered by the water wheel. At the top the grain was then emptied into storage bins or directly into chutes which are fed down to the stones to be ground into flour. The wheel house has this month also received new weather boarding and a new coat of paint and looks so much better for it. The remaining windows have been sympathetically repaired and glazed. At the time of writing we have 2 further windows that require some rot removing, repairs to the sills all before repainting then we can happily claim that all windows and glazing is complete throughout the mill. Photographs show some of the traditional repair methods used on the joinery The mill will again be hosting Santa’s Workshop this year, an extremely well attended event where children help Santa and his elves prepare for Christmas all in aid of raising funds for the restoration of the mill, due to popular demand tickets can be reserved now on 01473 829317. Today we have a group of artists that have set up on the front lawns with easels and brushes to paint the beautifully dazzling white mill with its fresh painted and repaired exterior. The plans for the future repairs to the interior main structure and flooring are very much in hand but more on this next month. Next open day is September 27th 10.30am – 4pm when the mill will be open and the water wheel turning so come along and see the mill before the next phase of repair is underway.
Milden Singers Their next concert is on 20th and 21st November and will have a Classical Theme. An eclectic mix of music some classic pop songs along with Gilbert & Sullivan, Ivor Novello,Opera and a selection from West Side Story. We are now an all Girl Choir and would love to hear from any one who would like to join, the ability to read music is not essential just a love of singing and having fun! We start rehearsals at Milden Pavilion on Monday 7th September at 7.30pm. For more information please contact Pearl 01449 741876

Encouraging the Joy of your Child’s Relationship with Music A baby’s relationship with sound actually starts in the womb, at just 15 weeks they can hear everything (albeit under water!) and, once born, at just two months old infants can even remember brief melodies. Research shows that early exposure to music can help promote critical listening skills, language and literacy, creativity and coordination. Learning rhymes and actions helps your child learn their first words. Music will help teach them about patterns and sequence, and about rhythm, beat and tone. Children with a strong sense of beat are more likely to read well and do better at maths for example. On a social level too, there are many benefits for your child. Music gives children a way to express themselves which encourages their self-confidence and self-esteem. At Sing & Stretch children don’t just listen to music, but become involved with the act of making music alongside other children and having a lot of fun doing so! If you’d like to find out more come and enjoy a first FREE session of ‘Sing & Stretch’ .With action songs, instruments, puppets and parachute, a fun and stimulating morning is guaranteed. GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and Big Ben This month I write to you with much excitement. After arrangements that were a year in the making, I was privileged to be able to join a tour of Big Ben in London. I had to be at Portcullis House (which is opposite Big Ben) by 8.45 in the morning. My housekeeper Maria was none too pleased but made sure that my chauffeur Frank had brought round the motor car from the Motor House spick and span to leave by 5.30 as dawn was breaking. I was astounded that the trunk road to London was packed with commercial vehicles (vans all in white carrying artisans and tradesmen to the City) so early. I had expected to be greeted at Westminster by Black Rod but a beadle welcomed me instead. I joined a party of twelve and we made progress down an escalator, then under the pavement and to the door of Elizabeth Tower, Big Ben. The Palace of Westminster had been destroyed by fire in 1834 and it was not until 1859 that Big Ben was complete and ticking. The first bell had fractured and indeed the current bell has a crack and there is a hole in it where the damage has received attention. It was some 350 steps to the top of the Tower. We saw the workings of the clock itself. Did you know that in 1976 damage occurred to the sails that control the 2 ton weights causing them to crash to the ground and for the massive clock mechanism to fly out of its housing. It was fortunate that no one was killed but the clock was rebuilt in 9 months for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. It was 9.45 am when we were looking at the clock and shortly before 10.00 am we had sat on the shelf inside the clock face lit by loads of Philips bulbs on an opposite wall and then we were up in the open by the bells. There were 16 chimes on smaller bells prior to the 10 strikes which followed 11 seconds later. I waited with great anticipation, my ear plugs in place. Big Ben struck and I felt the bell reverberate through every bone of my being. It was a very emotional experience. I felt that I was at the heart of Great Britain, as indeed I was. I had had a remarkable time which I will remember and speak of for the rest of my days. Frank borrowed my ear plugs on the return journey! As with the devastation to the Big Ben clock one never knows what is around the corner so it is best to be prepared. All of my readers should have in place a Lasting Power of Attorney so that other people can run their affairs should one no longer have mental capacity. No soul should leave us without having a Will in place so that one’s affairs can be administered and distributed. Do give me a call if these issues ring a bell. The house market is reasonably buoyant and please do ask us to take on your conveyancing. As you all know, I have thirty years of experience as a Solicitor, a qualification of which I am proud. An Evening with Gwen Dunn in Whatfield Gwen Dunn was the Headteacher of Whatfield School for 30 years, from 1951. On Saturday, 19th September, we will devote an evening, in the village hall, to celebrate all those years of service with her. We will show some of the short educational films she helped to make in the village, which used her school students as the stars, and will include an exhibition of many pictures taken over the years of the school, Gwen Dunn, and her many students. If you would like to come along, meet old friends, watch the films and talk to Gwen, our special evening will run from 7.30 to 9.30 in the village hall. Tea, coffee, biscuits and a bar will be available. For more information, call David on 01473 399215
‘All’s Blooming at The Boule-in!’ It’s not just business that is blooming for The Boule-in, Bildeston’s stylish French store, but also its quince tree which is fruiting for the first time! ‘It’s great” laughs Cathy Bullen, proprietor, whose annual French exhibition weeks are now firmly established in Suffolk’s seasonal diary. “We have been blown away by the success of our London store The Boule-in, Kennington which opened in the spring - but we have to admit that we love hosting our Suffolk Fetes best! As for the tree, we planted it on our return from living in France to celebrate our first ‘Fête de Coing’ four years ago - and now it’s bearing fruit! We lived in Cotignac in Provence, a village famous for it’s Coing (quince) and celebrated all things ‘quince’ in September: Our ‘Fête de Coing’ is slightly different in that we fill the garden and barn with objets d’art, original quirky pieces to decorate your home and garden - rather than quince! However we always try and create a fun French atmosphere…” In this she is absolutely right - a visit to a ‘Boule-in Fête’ is a unique and completely charming affair: browse around the pretty garden and barn and be tempted by the glorious collection of new stock fresh back from their latest trip to Provence. You will be offered a coffee and an irresistible brownie on arrival - perhaps it will be quince flavoured this time! Also exhibiting Riverside Bulbs and Sophie Grattan-Bellew Interior Design Consultancy The Boule-in Autumn Fair: ’Fête de Coing’ runs from Saturday 19th until Sunday 27th September (10am - 5pm daily) 77 High Street, Bildeston IP7 7ER www.boule-in.co.uk

Health Foods For You supporting ‘Organic September’ Small Changes, Big Difference shows the huge difference consumers can make by switching one household item to organic. Running throughout September, the campaign will be the UK’s biggest celebration of all things organic. Launched by the soil association and supported by Health Foods For You in Sudbury, customers will be encouraged to make one small change to their shopping habits in order to make a big difference to sustainable food, animal welfare and the environment. Ever moving raw foods prices and weather conditions abroad affecting crops makes it challenging but Jane’s commitment and determination leads her shop into its fourth year, just! A face lift for the shop, fresher look, new lines and a lot of in store changes ready for September to support ‘Organic September’ aiming to create new awareness and more customers. With more of a wholesale approach Jane wants to offer customers the chance to get great savings on their regular foods. With a new store incentive of further discounts on purchases or 3 or more of the same. Meridian and Biona are the shops best sellers including offers on organic tahini, black strap molasses and nut butters. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Our Autumn term starts on September 7th and we look forward to seeing all our friends again. The ponies have enjoyed a change of scene and different activities over the holidays, so will be refreshed and ready to provide the therapy which is of such benefit to all their riders. The Maintenance Team have been kept busy during the holidays – as they are in term time too – keeping the fields clean and ragwort free, clearing gutters, cutting grass and hedges, levelling the riding arena, mending and servicing equipment, tidying the garden beds etc. Would you like to be involved with this most valuable contribution to the running of The Shelley Centre? Although most of the present volunteers are men, women would be equally welcome. A couple of hours, during the week, when you are able, would help to share the jobs with those who are already involved. All tools would be provided and even a cup of tea when you need it! If you would like to help just give us a ring or Email and we can discuss which job would suit you best. We are hugely grateful to the present team of Rob, Colin, David M, David H, Martin, Alan, John, Jim and Graham as well as all those who chip in from time to time. Thank you for all you do. If you have a horse and would like a long distance ride through the beautiful countryside local to Shelley on Sunday 13th September Email maggierayner@hotmail.com and she will book you in. If you prefer an easier ride – what about a FROG RACE NIGHT (I don’t think you have to ride them!) at Nayland Village Hall on Saturday 17th October, 7 for 7.30pm. Bring your own drinks – Fish ‘n Chips supper. For Tickets apply to Diane Godfrey, with a s.a.e., Stable House, Tye Lane, Bramford Tye, Ipswich, IP8 4JZ. Tel: 01473 658552. It promises to be a fun evening so book early. We will have a few new riders starting this month so we hope that they enjoy their time with us and find the benefit that horse riding brings to those with disabilities. If you would like to help them achieve their goals do contact us and we will be delighted to welcome you as a volunteer helper. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Hadleigh Hairloom is having a facelift
Well, September is upon us. Autumn is knocking on the back door and creeping through the been-left-open-for-ages windows, making us wonder whether to drag out a cardy or sweater. And wouldn't you know it ……..I’ve seen those things (I cannot bring myself to say ……cards) in the shops! This summer has been, at times, kind of ok-ish - sort of, but its definitely shown up all the little faded bits, the getting a bit tired bits and the fact that we have been rather enthusiastic with the floor! You might have noticed over the course of this spring and summer we have been steadily making improvements to the salon; not least our lovely, very efficient blind. And it is to this end we’re dragging your attention our way again. We’ve been lucky enough to secure the services of a top local tradesman for a few days during the third week in September, and as there is a lot more to do than a quick repaint it wouldn't be possible during the hours we would be closed after a Saturdays' workday and re-opening on Monday morning, so we will be closing for two days - 21st & 22nd of September - Re-opening as normal on the 23rd September We are very excited about our re-fit. Having now been open 18 months, we keep finding we’ve run out of space to fit everybody in to the standards to which we aspire. As a result, we are extending the interior stud wall, moving some larger equipment, putting in two entire new work stations, redecorating, and generally bringing everything back up to the scratch of opening day! For the first year of trading we settled in, found what works best and offers the most to the clients; during this second year of trading we’ve made our plans for future development and are now executing them to ensure your on going comfort and our efficiency in serving our community. We’re sorry we’ll be unavailable to our clients on Monday & Tuesday 21st/22nd September, and as the two days we are closed would normally be senior concession days we would like to offer that concession to our ever patient seniors for the Wednesday and Thursday of that week. As ever we look forward to seeing each and every one of you and we hope you’ll all look forward to seeing your newer, brighter and smelling of paint, I've no doubt, Hairloom! Enjoy the last embers of our summer. With much fondness as ever, Sharron, Julie, Girls & Pups xxx
Physiotherapist Chris Paine joins Hadleigh Physiotherapy team We are very excited to introduce our new member of staff, physiotherapist Chris Paine. Chris is very passionate about his profession. In fact, his desire to pursue a career in physiotherapy started very early; inspired by watching Ipswich Town’s physios running onto the pitch to treat injured players when he was a little boy. He later went on to study Sports Science, before qualifying as a physiotherapist from Brunel University in 2009. He has since worked in the community and at Ipswich and Colchester hospital. Additionally to his role in the NHS and at Hadleigh Physiotherapy, he specialises in sports injuries and works with the Ipswich Town Academy where he treats acute and long-term injuries of 9-16 year old players. Previously, he held a similar position at Ipswich Rugby Club. Chris doesn’t just treat budding football stars, he is also a keen sports person himself. His biggest passion is open water swimming - this year he came 4th in the Great East Swim at Alton Water! A fantastic achievement. If Chris isn’t training his backstroke, you can also find him swinging a golf club, cycling or competing in the “muddy” Rat Race at London Excel. Chris holds a regular clinic at Hadleigh Physiotherapy on Tuesday evenings and is also available for home visits on Thursday and Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. If you suffer from any acute or long-term conditions or sports injuries, please don’t hesitate to give us a ring on 01473 810185 to book an appointment with Chris.

Head Chef Justin Kett talks spa-inspired food for the health conscious by The Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa Head Chef, Justin Kett, talks about the spa-inspired food being served at The Swan at Lavenham to appeal to health conscious foodies and spa goers alike. The Swan is going through a very exciting time with the recent opening of Weavers’ House Spa. In June we launched a new aspect to the Brasserie menu featuring an irresistible selection of raw meals to make you look and feel great. Our delicious wellbeing menu is an exciting collaboration with well-respected Suffolk naturopathic nutritional therapist Maggie Franks of www.deliciousnutritious.co.uk. All our dishes centre on the very best of fresh, raw ingredients. Everything stays below 28 degrees, so you get the full nutritional impact of each ingredient. I learned a lot from Maggie following a culinary master class we did together such as: making sure nuts are soaked to get the enzymes working, so they break down in your body giving you all the nutritional value before you digest them. Vegetables are spiralised or cut fine on a mandolin, so you get the crunch, creating a lot of different textures. Maggie did a lot of the background research for me which I've implemented in the new menu. We’ve also considered how people feel about what they are putting in their bodies to help those with allergens and gluten free dietary requirements. Just tell our waiting staff if you have any food related allergies or special dietary needs and we’ll do what we can to accommodate. If you want to recreate these dishes at home, all the ingredients we use are pretty accessible in most good supermarkets, but you may need to hunt around a little more for some of the seeds and nuts. A couple of my menu favourites are the pear and rocket salad with pumpkin seeds cured in a little palm sugar, watercress, coriander and lemon dressing. Another wonderful dish is the Weavers' Green Power Salad with avocado, celery, grapes, honey almonds, gem leaves and young shoots. If you’re not a raw food convert yet, just curious, you can fuse your salad with a variety of healthy protein options such as steamed sea bass fillet, lemon grilled chicken or char-grilled halloumi. And of course we still serve our famous afternoon tea for those that want to indulge a little more. To book your table call 01787 247477 or email: bookatable@theswanatlavenham.co.uk Visit www.theswanatlavenham.co.uk/restaurants to find our full menu.

Local businesses raise over £20,000 A ball in memory of Suffolk School girl Daisy Brooks has raised over £20,000.00. Local businessman Charlie Phillips from The Jolly Meat Company in Hadleigh together with family and friends organised the very successful fundraising event which helped drive total fundraising efforts to over £200,000.00. On 3rd May 2014 Daisy Brooks was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Just six months after her diagnosis Daisy sadly passed away the evening of her 7th birthday. As a family friend Charlie was keen to help support the fundraising efforts in Daisy's memory and support the valuable work being carried out by Funding Neuro, the charity dedicated to researching a cure and developing treatments for conditions which effect the brain, and in particular this rare condition suffered by Daisy. Charlie was overwhelmed by the level of local support, having roped in a number of other butchers and suppliers in the area to help supply meat for the 180 guests to enjoy as part of a three course feast put together by Charlie and his team at the Jolly Meat Company and local outside catering company GRH Catering and equipment hire from Henry Events. The ball was also supported by Steve from The Queens Head in Layham who kindly helped supply a bar for the event. Charlie Phillips commented “Months of planning and preparation went into the orchestrating of this successful event, and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped support us. This is a charity very close to my heart, and knowing that the money raised will have a significant impact on the work being carried out by this charity is amazing”. Puddle Ducks – Swimming lessons in your area for babies, toddlers and pre-school age children Are you looking for swimming lessons for your little one? Our new term has just begun but you can join us at any point in the term so please do get in touch to find out more. Swimming is one of the most amazing experiences you can share with your baby or toddler! You can start swimming with us from a few weeks old up until they reach the age of 5. There are many benefits to swimming with your child, listed below are just a few: • Classes really help to build your child’s confidence around water, especially as they learn vital personal survival skills and can even help with activities at home such as hair washing! • The fun content of lessons with lots of songs and activities helps children learn to swim without realising it! Many of our 2 year olds can now swim short distances independently • Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns • As classes are based on age rather than ability, your child (and you!) will be making friends with children at a similar age • Even though gentle, baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby's heart, lungs and respiratory system • Being in water with your child lets you share their swimming journey and learn how to practise in your own time • Encouraging children to take regular exercise helps to promote a healthy routine from an early age • Providing your child with water confidence and water safety will not only protect them but open the doors to many opportunities in the future Our teachers adapt every activity to suit each child. Our baby-led swimming approach ensures that your child's needs are expertly fulfilled - never forcing development, but rather nurturing it to ensure a positive experience and love of swimming. The children have great fun whilst learning important discipline around water. Classes are filling fast so don’t delay, book today – suffolk@puddleducks.com or 01473 356222.
Language, Lore & Legend, The Story of English with Dr Graham Platts Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 Lectures Starting on Thursday 24th September 2015, in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Language in this country was very different 1000 years ago, and yet still forms the basis of our own language. We shall look at the main phases in this development by tracing the broad history of settlers here and their language legacy, including stories, traditions and legends they brought with them. Dr Graham Platts has had a lifelong interest in English as a language and evolving medium of communication. He has taught English to children in school as well as to speakers of other languages and before his retirement worked as a School Principal in Oman and Pakistan. He has a BA in English Literature, also an MA and PhD in medieval studies. Fees: Adult £48 (payable after the first lecture). Come to the first session or please contact Sue Whiteley for further information. Phone: 01787 210945 or email: whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

Karen Halliday star of CBBC’s reality show ‘School for Stars’ came to Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston to run an ‘Audition Workshop’ for young people (in association with Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts). The workshop explored the importance of correct preparation, as well as discovering the process of selection and rejection; even if the students didn’t want to pursue a career in the performing arts – the workshop was still a valuable Karen outside Chamberlin Hall tool, focusing very much in believing in yourself in whichever path was chosen and having the confidence to do whatever you wanted to do. Local children from Hadleigh and the surrounding villages attended - who all took the benefit of working with such an experienced teacher who has worked at one of the top performing arts schools in London. As a performer Karen’s experience in the performing arts spans across film and theatre as an actress, The Young Stars of the Future vocalist and dancer in professional tours, musical theatre, pantomimes and summer seasons. Her dancing career included appearances in films such as The Labyrinth directed by Jim Henson, Who Framed Roger Rabbit directed by Robert Zemickes and Stephen Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun. Karen worked with each session (split by age) and was very impressed with the dedication and ease at which they threw themselves into the workshop. It proved so successful that there is already talk of her re-visiting to run a longer 3 day workshop to showcase a “performance” piece to family Older Group under Karen's instruction and friends Her message to everyone...”Never allow anyone to prevent you from doing what in your heart you know you were born to do! Remember to reach for the stars and catch the dream in whatever you choose to do in the future...” To register your interest or to find out more please contact: Miss Lesley at Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts. Grey clouds gathered above and the rain came down, yet over three hundred friends and supporters rolled up for the SESAW Open Day at the end of July. A big thank you to everyone who helped raise over £3,300 at the Dog Show, Fete, BBQ and Refreshments marquee. Even Jazz Galore braved the weather to entertain us! Open Day aside, my canine pals and I have enjoyed the lovely summer, unlike a three year old Lakeland-X that has been with us since May. Buster is a tiny bit stupid, he kennel guards and sems very fierce in there, but he is not like that at all. Everyone passes by, thinking he would kill his neighbour but once out, they happily go for a walk together. He's getting quite depressed, watching all the others come in and go before him. He would be good, probably as the only pet and with older children 'cause he wants all the fuss. Come and see Buster but ask so out of the kennel and give him a chance. Thank you to the Stratford St. Mary Village Life Committee for inviting us to their Medieval Fayre in July. The visitors enjoyed meeting some of the animals - and our volunteers of course! I’ll be in trouble with Ollie (the Black) Cat if I don’t also mention the many cats longing for new people to own - that’s what he said! Hopefully they will leave us sooner than a family of ferals, homed last month after waiting at Sesaw for nearly four years. If you are visiting Hadleigh for the Year of the Sheep Grand Finale on Saturday 26th September, please pop into our £1 Sale for bargains and refreshments. It will be open 11-2pm at the Ansell Centre next to the United Reform Church, Market Place, IP7 5DL. It’s nearly time for Mum’s evening rounds but I’m guarding the computer until someone emails this article for me. Ollie’s hinting at writing another “no holds barred” report but this month’s news is definitely from me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua! 62nd Burstall Show Saturday August 1st 2105 was a wonderful day weather wise, and a good crowd came again to support our Village Show. Entries in the vegetable section were of a very high standard. John Mower from Hintlesham won the Class Cup, the award for the Best Vegetable entry in the Show, and shared the Extreme Vegetable award with Hugh Richards. Kate Woodward led the contest for the Burstall Vegetables. Derek Elliston was the first winner of the new ‘Vegetables grown for Pleasure’ Class. Hugh Richards won the Cup for the Open Flowers and best Flower Exhibit. The Flower Arranging Class and best Flower Arranging Exhibit was won by Samantha Barber from Belstead, There were very strong entries in the Preserves, Cookery and Handicrafts sections, and these were much praised by the Judges. Lisa Gardiner won the Preserves Class with Ann Day winning the Burstall Cookery Cup. Jane Sago from Bramford, a long time member of Burstall WI and currently the President of the East Suffolk Womens Institute, was the worthy winner of the Open Cookery Cup. Susie Tucker won the Open Handicrafts Class. A new class for Men Only entries was won by Kris Evans There were good entries in all the Children’s Classes, and the enthusiasm of those competing augurs well for the future. Sophie Woolf, Chloe Macmillan and Ben Debman won the trophies for their respective age groups. The best exhibit in these classes was won by Charlie Woolf for his Monster Vegetable Musical entertainment was provided by the Frog Island Jazz Band in the Village Hall grounds. Several Classic Cars, Motor Cycles Tractors and other Vehicles were on show and brought back happy memories to many. The displays given by the Five Rivers Dog Agility Club demonstrated the considerable skills of dogs and their owners to great effect. Such a happy day does not happen by accident. Much hard work was expended by many people to achieve yet another great success. Thanks go to all who kindly and cheerfully helped and contributed. Special thanks to the sponsors, to the stewards, judges and exhibitors of the Flower Show, to donors of Grand Draw Prizes, bottles for the tombola and other items for sale on the stalls. Thanks also to those who prepared the showground, organised, erected and helped with side shows, and last but not least to those who contributed food and served refreshments throughout the day, and to those who washed up and cleared up at the end. The standard of food was excellent and as always is a marvellous credit to the limited resources of the small parish of Burstall. Those who worked so hard to provide and serve lunches, teas, BBQ food, ice creams, cakes and drinks throughout the day really do deserve special praise. Trophies were presented by the President of the Show to the very worthy prize winners, and the Show concluded with an auction of surplus produce (kindly donated by exhibitors). Just over 100 years ago, the Cranfield Family gave to Burstall our wonderful Village Hall, and our small village has the continuing responsibility for maintaining this fantastic asset for the benefit of all our residents both now and in the future. Improved insulation and lighting, a more efficient and a less costly heating system, and the redecoration of the interior have all been carried out in the past year. With the tremendous support we have had from our 62nd Show, we hope we are now well on the way to raising sufficient resources to fund its exterior redecoration. We are very grateful to the support given to this event, and believe that all who visited the Show had a very happy day out. We shall now start preparing for next year’s Show, which will be held on Saturday 2nd August 2016. Nicholas Fiske (President)

Hadleigh Pool & Leisure launch their NEW Commando inflatable aquarun…bringing back the fun & excitement to swimming Last month the commando aqua run pool inflatable was launched as part of the summer holiday fun sessions at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure. The commando run is a REAL challenge for all and is all about negotiating the new 12metre obstacle course aqua run inflatable. So can you tackle the commando run? Ducking, diving, bobbing, climbing, racing to the end, you'll need to be nimble and quick to win against both your opponent and this dual lane aqua run - as long as you can keep your balance! The commando aqua run will keep kids & the big kids (adults!!) entertained and active for hours. The sessions are open to all ages and abilities but to try the aqua run you must be a competent swimmer (Under 8’s must be supervised by parent or an adult over 18 at all times). The sessions are open every weekend 2-4pm and during school holidays on a Monday 2-3.30pm, Wednesday 2-4pm and Friday 2-4pm. Why not host the ultimate pool party for your friends and family and have the exclusive use of the commando aqua run and pool? Available Saturdays from 5pm. Kelly Blackburn, Operations Manager has been thrilled on how well the inflatable sessions have gone down with the swimmers of Hadleigh ‘we are so pleased to be able to offer the children of Hadleigh a fun, affordable and active way to spend their holidays’ she continues ‘we wanted to attract the children back to the pool and this definitely showing to be a hit’ This well timed attraction is hoping to have a positive impact on the declining numbers of people playing sport since London 2012 with the latest figures published by Sport England showing swimming having the biggest drop! For details of session times and prices or if you’d like to know what else Hadleigh Pool & Leisure has to offer you and your family such as membership, swimming lessons, fitness classes, gym or room hire, visit www.ssleisure.co.uk or call 01473 823470

Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 16 (Autmn 2015) The ‘other’ Bildeston Hall is featured during the 19th century when its owner Thomas Bakewell White took the name of the demolished manor house as the name for his own home in Duke Street. Stories of the residents include a case of breach of promise and Bonfire Night pranks in Market Place. Today the term ‘charity shop’ means an outlet for selling pre-used items donated to a good cause. Bildeston first had its own charity shop in 1665, when a former rector arranged for the rent from part of his property to go towards assisting the poor of the parish. Can you guess which building it was in Market Place? Crops and implements are the subjects covered in part one of ‘Working on the land in 17th century Bildeston’. Bullimong, maslin and tares were grown as field crops along with wheat and barley, which were brought into the barns on Suffolk morpheys. Many hand tools would have been made by local craftmen but does anyone know what a mud sruppet or a riving beetle were used for? Recently, a new edition has appeared of Pevsner’s Buildings of England: Suffolk, so Bildeston History Quarterly has taken a look at the village’s buildings that are mentioned. As well as picturesque medieval timber-framed structures, more modern properties are admired including No. 14 High Street and the Sewage Works on Chelsworth Road, both the work of Bildeston architect, the late John Weller. Peter Hubbard of Bath continues his memories of the village during the 1930s with his contributions to the Baptist Church Anniversary, which landed him in trouble with his grandfather. If you would like to share your memories of Bildeston in decades gone by, please contact the editor: Sue Andrews (01449) 740673. Bildeston History Quarterly is on sale at the beginning of September at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Keith Avis and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh and Hollow Trees Farm Shop Semer, price £3

On the 1st September 2014 the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance was formed and started work at creating a dementia friendly community in Hadleigh. In February 2015 we were formally recognised as the first town in Suffolk to be awarded this status by the Alzheimer’s Society. Our key aims were set for 2015. We were looking to create 20 dementia champions, 2000 dementia friends, 24 dementia friendly businesses, create a list of activities that were dementia friendly, shout about our success and create a website to sign post the community to dementia friendly activities, businesses and organisations. We are delighted to report that as of the end of July we have made 791 dementia friends, have 12 dementia champions delivering dementia friends information sessions around the community groups include, the Baptist Church, Ansell Centre Volunteers, Paddy and Scott’s. 15 local businesses have committed to becoming dementia friendly organisations. Regular press can be found in the community news, Mercury and East Anglian about the success of our work. Fundraising events have been well supported by the Community with a Gospel Concert, Digital Cinema of Still Alice, Coffee mornings and so much more. In September 2015 the Alliance will launch a dementia friendly activity programme that sign posts those living with or caring for someone with dementia to dementia friendly activity around the town. This includes Otago, Lunch clubs, coffee mornings and so much more. Our website development is underway and we hope to go live with www.hadleighdementiafriends.co.uk in January 2016. To celebrate our first year you will find volunteers at the Alliance all over the Town during September. Come and find out how you can raise awareness and understanding and help us create a dementia friendly community. Farm to Fork: Engaging in the food story The Angel Inn at Stoke by Nayland is demonstrating its commitment to local, small-scale and artisan producers with a new ‘Farm to Fork’ initiative. Farm to Fork is about knowing where your food comes from, how it’s been grown and raised and reducing the chain from farm to table. Championed by Executive Head Chef, Mark Allen, the initiative was launched in August following the arrival of a Big Green Egg in the kitchen. Mark says, “We’ve always worked hard to source the best British produce at the Angel, but when we were planning our new Big Green Egg menu, we realised we had an opportunity to take this further. “With Farm to Fork we want to directly engage people in the food story from life on the farm to delicious food on their forks. At a time when farming is in the news, The Angel Inn is showcasing the fantastic produce available locally, buying direct to bring the very best ingredients onto the menu. “We are working exclusively with Slow Food producers Lower Dairy Farm in Nayland, to supply 28 day aged beef and rear rare breed pigs for us, with all the pork destined for the Big Green Egg. For me, it’s great to get out of the kitchen, visit and follow the progress of the animals on the farm and know I am sourcing the best possible produce for my kitchen.” With three pubs in the heart of Suffolk villages, Exclusive Inns, a family owned company, understand and are passionate about life in the rural community. Buying locally doesn’t just benefit farmers, it benefits the entire rural economy. Jennifer Taylor of Lower Dairy Farm says, “When Mark approached us, we were delighted to partner with The Angel Inn. It’s fantastic to see Exclusive Inns reinforcing their place at the heart of the village, demonstrating their commitment to small family farms that help create the character of the rural community. “We’ve always been passionate about selling direct from the farm gate – there are so many benefits to the local economy and it’s much more interesting than a supermarket aisle! We will be keeping people updated on the pigs’ progress via the Angel’s blog and have bought Mark a pair of wellies so he can visit the pigs whenever he wants.” Overseen by Mark, Farm to Fork will be launched at The Swan Inn at Monks Eleigh in September with local producers to be announced shortly.

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Hadleigh and District Gardening Club's August meeting was a coach trip to visit East Ruston Old Vicarage and dawned on a miserable, drizzly morning which, thankfully, cheered up well before we got aboard the coach and thereafter stayed that way and was, in fact, a rather lovely day. It is so well known and a garden many had visited before but for myself I was a little disapppointed as it didn't seem to have the 'wow' factor I had remembered but I think I was in the minority. The leafy walks and hidden nooks and crannies were, and still are, delightful so I'm not sure why I felt the way I did. It is a garden well supplied with seating sited in delightful settings, which is great for those of us who find being on ones feet for too long causes aches and pains - me! I do hope everyone has had a successful and bounteous summer in their gardens and is thinking of planning for the new season which, in gardening terms, starts about now! What shall we plant, leave out or experiment with? For me, as I seldom water, salad crops have been awful but, once again, all the peas did fantastically well but the beans and brassicas were not brilliant and I have had to weaken and water them a few times. We will be back to our usual day, time and place for our first meeting of the Autumn season - 7.30 Town Hall dining room on the second Monday of the month. For our meeting on the 14th of September Dave Fryer will be giving a talk on bonsai. Look forward to seeing you all then. Ruth Allen

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I recently visited East Ruston Old Vicarage with the Garden Club. This is near Stalham in the Norfolk Broads. It is a huge garden (32 acres), but it is split into lots of garden rooms by hedges of various sorts. I think that it is one of the best gardens in the country, and is gorgeous to look at, but when I visit a garden like this I try to find features which I could adapt to my garden in order to improve it. At East Ruston this is difficult because everything is on a grand scale, and just one of their large planted pots would be too big for my garden, and would totally fill some of the small gardens on Hadleigh's new housing estates. I have included a picture of one such pot. However I did spot one idea that I could use. There were several places where they had planted beds or pots with two different coloured flowers of different heights intermingled, and these were effective, and something that I would not have done. I would have planted the taller plants in the centre, with the shorter ones in a ring around them. In my garden The sweet peas are now over and have now been removed to give a view to the bed of dahlias which are now flowering well. The tomatoes are now in full production and we have plenty of french and runner beans. Open Gardens 3 September Feeringbury Manor, Coggeshall Road. Feering, CO5 9RB 13 September Bays Farm, Earl Stonham, IP14 5HU 13 September Lucy Redman Garden 6 The Village, Rushbrooke, IP30 0ER 13 September Spencers, Tilbury Road, Great Yeldham, CO9 4JG Weather Records In July at Kersey there was 78.6 mm (3.1") of rain, which is 50% more than the average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of July was 150.9 mm (5.9") which is almost exactly the average figure. This has theoretically made up for the dry June, but although plants are now growing well my soil still seems too dry. In July the maximum temperature was 28 Cel (82F) and the minimum temperature was 9 Cel (48F) which are both close to the monthly average. Hints In September it is time to enjoy the last of our Summer. Temperatures start to drop, and unless we have been very good at looking after them our annuals will be well past their best. Nice days provide a good chance to tidy up before the Winter Does your garden still have plants to keep it interesting in September. Dahlias and Geraniums (pelargoniums) will keep up their colourful display until frosts occur. Often around here that is not until early November. Other useful plants for this period of the year are the various Michaelmas Daisies, the hardy chrysanthemums, anemone japonica and the Sedums like the variety "Autumn Joy". Have a look and see if there are places where you could use some of these plants to improve your September garden next year. There are also some bulbs which flower at this time including some varieties of cyclamen, and the Autumn Crocus (Colchicum). Some of the later will flower happily indoors without even planting them in soil. Planted in the garden they will last for years, but need to be planted where the foliage in Spring will not be a nuisance. September is the time at which bulbs appear in garden centres, and there are a marvellous range available nowadays to brighten our houses and gardens. The range of colours and flower shapes in daffodils seems to be increasing all the time, and I plan to add a few new varieties to my collection this year. John Rye

Whatfield Village Hall on Thursday 17th September and Polstead Village Hall on Saturday 19th September Common Ground Theatre Company are delighted to present Dumas' extraordinary banquet of heroes, villains, pirates and princesses sprinkled with the their own spice-mix of lunacy, dodgy accents, songs and sheer daftness. We first meet the somewhat eccentric members of The Dumas Society of Snigsbridge University, as they plan their own, very unique production of Dumas' classic tale. Their gallant efforts might not be quite what the literary giant had in mind! Dashing young sailor Edmond Dantes is framed by three nasty men - one wants his girl, one wants his career and one wants his silence. After 17 years imprisoned in the infamous Chateau D'If, Edmond escapes, becomes ridiculously rich and impossibly brilliant at everything and, as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo, he arrives in Paris (the capital of the world and much nicer than that smelly London) and starts plotting his revenge. Suitable for ages 7+. Cast includes Charles Davies (seen at The New Wolsey Theatre in A Chorus of Disapproval and Noises Off) and Nicholas Underwood, who recently received rave reviews for his performance in the national tour of Pride & Prejudice with 2 Actors (Bury Theatre Royal, amongst others). Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We are pleased to confirm that we have been accepted by the Charities Commission and entered in the Register of Charities No. 1162885 Winter in Hadleigh (SWH). We will shortly be able to confirm a post box number and address to receive correspondence. Our aim is to provide support to those who fear winter and the struggle they have to survive through it. We are also aiming to work closely with the major charities and cover the gaps that their services find out of their range. We will as a new and small group concentrate solely on Hadleigh and the adjoining villages. There will obviously have to be certain conditions to what can be supplied in support but we will always endeavour to cover the basic needs in times of emergency. Should you wish to know more of our aims and can offer support either by sponsorship or personal input we would be pleased for you to contact one of the first two names below, thank you. Remember that it is anticipated that in the order of 350 people will die in Suffolk as a result of the cold this winter. If we cannot look after all of them let us at least try to help those with whom we are neighbours. Fred Breyer, Chairman 01473 829127 Peter Gower, Treasurer 01473 827005 Nick Webber, Trustee

Following on from that the final document will be issued back to residents to accept or reject in a referendum. Lavenham Parish Council
Do You Dare to Scare? Join The Scream Team and become a Scaresville Scarer! Scaresville is seeking new members for the Scream Team 2015. Scaresville materializes in the grounds of Kentwell Hall every autumn, conveniently around Halloween! It is one of the UK’s top Scare Attractions. Thousands of visitors experience about 25 scares, along an hour-long route through the buildings, woods and grounds. There are ‘special effects’ scares, complex scares and the downright simple ‘jumpers out’. Scaresville began in 2008, on a very modest scale. Every year it gets bigger, better and far, far scarier. “Your adrenaline is pumping, your heart is beating loud in your chest, you can see shadowy figures moving towards you in the darkness... and then... you make them SCREAM, and laugh, and scream!! You retreat silently back into your hiding place until the next group comes along, with a big smile on your face. Scaring is twice the fun of being scared. "We have a fantastic community of volunteer Scarers and helpers who make up what we call The Scream Team. and we are always looking for new members - scarers and operatives, some visible, some hidden; some who jump out and some who make noises. There are also non-scaring roles available: wardrobe assistants, make-up, fixers and runners, as well as marshals and front-of-house assistants said Patrick Phillips, the owner of Kentwell and the creator of Scaresville. "Places on The Scream Team are voluntary, but we feed you before and after your evening’s scaring, and we provide you with any costume or makeup necessary. Scarers clock up ‘ScareMiles’ to claim complimentary tickets and other Scaresville goodies and members of The Scream Team will receive a year-long pass to enter Kentwell’s daytime events and house opening days. said Mr Phillips. In order to prepare for Scaresville, you need to be able to attend a Scare Academy training evening, where we help you prepare to scare, and the allimportant Dress Rehearsal evening. Scaresville 2015 runs from Wednesday 7 October to Saturday 31 October 2015 - tickets are already selling fast for this incredibly popular event. Looking for the ultimate Halloween thrill? If you are over 18 and can join The Scream Team for at least three evenings, visit www.scaresville.co.uk or email office@kentwell.co.uk to find out more. What else would you be doing on those dark, quiet October evenings? Don’t hibernate at home – liberate your scary side at Kentwell’s Scaresville.

This one day event is intended for anyone, who has experienced Bereavement or Loss of any kind or would like to help someone who is experiencing either, whether you are a family member, friend, or professional working closely with others. As well as the first of these two days on August 8th, we ran two of these days in 2014 and those who attended found the day very useful and informative. It seems we all struggle with what to say or do for those who are experiencing loss. The learning on the days will be about the theory of grief and the grieving process, dispelling the myths around it and giving more understanding of how to ‘be’ with someone. Importantly helping us to learn what not to say. The days will be led by Sue Pullen, about whom a brief and relevant background is given below. There will be an opportunity to talk in pairs or in groups, where participants are free to share their own experiences and concerns if they wish. It is advised that the day is for people whose experience of Loss or Bereavement is longer than 8 – 10 months. Saturday October 3rd, in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh from 10am – 4pm. We are able to offer these days for a small cost of £10 per person towards expenses thanks to our sponsors. Drinks will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Sue Pullen is co-ordinator for a community bereavement service in Essex, called Steppingstones and a qualified and experienced Counsellor and Supervisor. Before that Sue worked in an adult and children’s hospice for 14 years, firstly on the care floor and then in the family support team. Sue also offers bereavement training to both the general public and professionals. Sue writes: ‘I am passionate about this subject and believe this is one of the last taboos. If we can talk and understand about death and the grieving process, something that will surely happen to us all, maybe we can be alongside the bereaved in a meaningful way. I believe that bereavement is a process to be supported not a problem to be solved.’ Please book your place by contacting or leaving a message for Pauline Thrower on 07909 796266 or email at pauline@pt-counselling.uk OR at St Mary’s Church Office 01473 824987 or email at office@stmaryshadleigh.co.uk and you will be sent a booking form to complete and return. Thank you.

On 27th September, the friends of Amplitude Music Club present an evening of outstanding musical entertainment, starring the Hugh Ledigo Jazz Quartet. The Amplitude Music Club was founded in 2005 and offers tuition and musical experiences to youngsters aged 11 – 19. Co-founder and teacher, Adam Keeton, will commence the evening’s entertainment, performing a variety of rhythm and blues numbers with his own local trio. Always in the market to champion anyone and everyone to become involved in music, Hugh Ledigo – pianist, composer and arranger for the Kenny Ball Band for more than 25 years – and his quartet of internationally renowned jazz musicians will be performing a selection of both new and well loved jazz favourites to help raise funds in support of the Amplitude Music Club. Hugh Ledigo has had a widely varied career, spanning more than 6 decades. His musical experience ranges from playing in London clubs (one of which had bullet holes in the piano) to performing in some of the world’s most illustrious hotels and concert halls. With both the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and the Kenny Ball Band, Hugh has toured extensively throughout the UK, Europe, America and Australia receiving many standing ovations for his exceptional keyboard skills. Along with Hugh, the quartet will comprise the superb clarinet/saxophone player Julian Marc Stringle, dynamic double bass player Dave Green and remarkable drummer, Mike Bradley. All musicians of world renown, their reputations precede them and this promises to be an evening of incomparable talent and sheer musical delight. The concert will be held in the function room at Kersey Mill, a delightful venue set among the gentle, tranquil Suffolk countryside. Doors will open at 6.30pm and the Adam Keeton Trio will begin the evening’s entertainment at 7.00pm. Our heartfelt thanks go to the management of Kersey Mill for offering their venue free of charge, in aid of a very worthy cause. 01473 657593

Rosa Simon Music Fund: late summer update
A RY P R A
Wednesday and Friday evenings, 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm Saturday lunchtimes, 12 noon to 2pm Plus holiday and sickness cover for job share partner on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Good rate of pay Please telephone Sue Perry on 01473 822704 Alternatively John Reading on 01473 828846 Here at Rosa's Fund we hope that all of the readers of the HCN have been enjoying a relaxing and happy summer. Some folks though have been incredibly busy raising money for Rosa's Fund and we'd like to thank everyone for their brilliant and inspiring efforts, including form 7d at Hadleigh High School who raised £150 through a cake sale, St. Mary's School who collected donations totalling £319 after each KS2 end-of-term performance and Hadleigh United FC at whose charity match versus FC Sudbury £225 was collected. In addition, Mrs Elaine Goh's pupil concert raised £115.50 and Miss Maggie Addison's pupil concert another £50. Thank you all so much! In turn we've signed off on a couple of applications for funding, including £467 to St. Elizabeth Hospice for them to buy a new keyboard for use in their music therapy sessions for bereaved children. Coming up, there are two great musical initiatives backed by Rosa's Fund: the launch of the Hadleigh Junior Choir in association with the Hadleigh Community Choir on 22nd September and the inaugural Hadleigh & District Young Musician of the Year Competition on 28th November. We're also starting to think about possible initiatives for next year, including another workshop/concert event, a musical instrument amnesty and setting up long-term bursaries to support talented young musicians, singers and performers. But nothing is yet set in stone and if you have any ideas for projects which Rosa's Fund could support, please contact me on danton89@hotmail.com Thanks! Paul Simon & Family

Handy Tony beats field of 132 at Newton Green Newton Green’s annual flag ship event, the Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf, enjoyed record support from members and a week of fine weather. Retired village shop keeper Tony Mitchell had special reasons to smile at the Saturday night presentation evening as earlier in the day he had led home the field in the main event of the week. Tony had his handicap cut from 26 to 23 as a result of carding an impressive 43 points to lead the biggest ever field of 132 competitors in the Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver. Handy man and Tony Mitchell seniors member Tony, having already built an & Jonathan Lambert all-weather cab for his golf buggy, is now using his retirement to try and achieve a handicap of 18. Best lady in the salver was Jenny Downes on 39 points, with Alice Barlow best junior with 34.

Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies Championship Competition 2015 Saturday, 25th July saw Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies section undertaking a gruelling 36 hole competition to determine their Ladies’ Champion for 2015. They started the day early, from 8am on the Gainsborough course. Stopped for a light lunch then continued from 1.30pm to play the Constable course in the afternoon. What started out as a cloudy, damp and windy day ended in wonderful evening sunshine. All the ladies were weary when the 18th Constable was finished and everyone deserved a prize but there could be only one winner of the Championship and that was Sybil Paton. Well done Sybil.
