First Aliyah - 12 verses Lists an exact accounting of the amounts of gold, silver and copper donated for the construction of the Tabernacle, as well as the vessels and building materials constructed with these supplies. Second Aliyah - 20 verses The high priest’s ephod and its precious-stone-studded shoulder straps are made. The High Priest’s Breastplate is assembled. It contained four rows of precious stones, each row containing three stones. Artisans engraved the names of the Twelve Tribes of Israel upon these twelve stones. It was then secured by straps which connected it to the ephod. Third Aliyah - 11 verses The rest of the priestly garments are completed: The high priest’s robe adorned with bells and pomegranates, and tzitz (a golden band worn on the forehead); and the four garments worn by both the high priest and the regular priests: tunics, turbans, sashes and pants. With this, the construction of the Tabernacle and all its vessels and accoutrement are finished. Fourth Aliyah - 11 verses The craftspeople bring their finished products to Moses. Moses saw that all the work had been done exactly to G-d’s specifications, and he blessed the workers. Fifth Aliyah - 16 verses G-d instructs Moses to erect the Mishkan on the first of Nissan. G-d also instructs Moses to place all the vessels in their proper places, and to anoint all of the items with the anointing oil, thus sanctifying them. Moses is also directed to dress Aaron and his sons in the priestly garments, and to anoint them, too. Sixth Aliyah - 11 verses Moses’ fulfills these directives. Seventh Aliyah - 11 verses Moses completes the proper placement of the vessels. A Cloud of Glory and the Divine Presence then fill the Mishkan.

Delve into the deeper side of Judaism This week we take a look at the construction of the Mishkan

Seventh Heaven The Mishkan was completed after three month’s labour. It was finished on the 25th Kislev, 2449. Moshe thought that it should be set up and initiated immediately. Hashem decided that the Mishkan should be consecrated in Nissan, since Nissan is a month in which the Shechina illuminates the world, and it is the task of the Mishkan to bring light to the world. Since Kislev was bypassed and not honoured as the month of consecration, it was chosen instead as the month for the holiday of Chanukah which begins on the 25th of Kislev. On the first of Nissan, Hashem commanded that the Mishkan finally be set up. The scoffers who did not believe that the Shechina would actually dwell at the Mishkan tried to put it together, but it would not stand. Then all the wise generation toiled to erect it but were unable to do so. Finally, Moshe set up the Mishkan single-handedly. He merely touched the beams, and they miraculously placed themselves in their proper positions.

The Inauguration Ceremony lasted eight days. Hashem taught Moshe in which place to set up each vessel, how to perform the service, how to offer the incense, how to prepare the candles of the Menorah, how to offer sacrifices, how to dress Aharon and his sons, etc. The eighth day was the first of Nissan. On that day, the incense mixture

was offered, and then, finally the Cloud of the Shechina descended upon the Mishkan and filled it with its presence. Hashem created the world so that His shechina could reside therein.  However, Adam sinned. The shechina then withdrew to the First Heaven.

When the Generation of Enosh sinned, the shechina departed to the Second

Heaven.  The Generation of the Flood caused the shechina to recede to the Third Heaven.

The wicked Generation of the Dispersal made the shechina retreat to the Fourth Heaven.

 The Egyptians in Abraham’s time pushed the shechina to the Fifth Heaven.  On account of the wickedness of Sodom and its neighbouring cities, the shechina departed to the Sixth Heaven.

The Egyptians in Moshe’s time made the shechina withdraw to the Seventh Heaven.

Seven tzaddikim restored the shechina to the world: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Levi, Kehat, Amram, and when Moshe erected the Mishkan, the shechina descended from the First Heaven and one again returned to earth. Based on ‘The Midrash Says’ by Rabbi M. Weissman

What rested on the Mishkan during their time in the desert? * Schedule is subject to change. How many times does it say ‘as Moshe was commanded’ in this week’s parsha?

Parshat Pekudei is one of 17 sidrot in the Torah that contain none of the mitzvot. However, there are 111 mitzvot in the whole book of Shemot. A connection is made between the 100 silver foundation supports that the Mishkan rested on, and the 100 brachot which we are supposed to recite daily; signifying that our brachot are the foundation of our days. Moshe gave a voluntary accounting of all the materials that had been collected, to ensure that he would not generate any suspicion that he had taken anything for himself.
