First Aliyah - 13 verses Judah approaches Joseph and appeals to him to allow Benjamin to return to his father Jacob in Canaan. Second Aliyah - 11 verses Unable to restrain his emotions any longer, Joseph sends everyone out the room except for the brothers and reveals his true identity to them. He reassures them that he does not harbour any ill feelings towards them. Third Aliyah - 20 verses Joseph instructs his brothers to quickly return to Canaan and bring Jacob and their families back to Egypt, where Joseph promised to provide them with food until the famine ends. Joseph embraces his brothers and cries. The brothers return to Canaan inform Jacob that Joseph is alive and ruling over Egypt. Jacob’s spirit is revived. Fourth Aliyah - 8 verses Jacob and his entire family leave Canaan and head to Egypt. G-d reassures him that He will bring them out of Egypt and back to Eretz Yisrael. Fifth Aliyah - 20 verses The Torah lists the 70 members of Jacob’s family that went down to Egypt with him. Sixth Aliyah - 17 verses Jacob arrives in Egypt, to the province of Goshen that Pharaoh had allotted his family. Joseph goes there to greet his father. Pharaoh agrees to let them settle there as shepherds. Seventh Aliyah - 17 verses While Joseph supplied his family with food, the rest of Egypt struggles. First they expended all their money in exchange for food that Joseph sold them. Then their money ran out, and they paid for provisions with their cattle. Finally, when they had no money or chattel left, they sold their land and themselves to Pharaoh into servitude in exchange for provisions. Meanwhile, in the land of Goshen, Jacob’s family prosper and multiply exceedingly.

Delve into the deeper side of Judaism This week we examine the dramatic revelation of the Viceroy’s true origins

Any Dream Will Do Joseph sent all the Egyptians out of the room, thereby putting his life at the mercy of his brothers. He did not want to embarrass them in public by revealing in front of the Egyptians that he was the long-lost Joseph whom they had sold. He said to them, “This brother who you said died - is he certainly dead?” “Yes, certainly,” replied.

they

“You are liars! You sold him! I bought him for a slave, and I will send for him! Yosef ben Yaakov!” The brothers looked in all directions, but no one appeared. “Where are you looking?” asked Joseph. “I am Yosef!” Overcome with shame, the brothers were unable to answer.

though you sold me to Egypt. Do not grieve at having sold me, and do not let it anger you that I am a ruler, for it is Hashem who sent me here, and it was not caused by you. The reason Hashem made me king is not because I am greater than you are, but to fulfill my dreams and to bring us all to Egypt.” Joseph instructed the brothers to return to their father, and bring him down to Egypt. At first Jacob did

He did not want to embarrass them in public by revealing in front of the Egyptians not believe that his son was still alive, but then he received a coded message from Joseph to convince him that not only was he still alive, but he had retained his spiritual holiness even throughout his slavery, imprisonment, and eventual elevated position.

1. His plan was to segregate the Jews from the Egyptians in order to prevent assimilation. 2. Goshen possessed suitable pasture grounds for their flocks. 3. The land of Goshen was the legal property of the B’nei Yisrael because Pharoah had given it as a present to their ancestress Sarah. Joseph feared that if the Jews would settle on Egyptian property, the Egyptians might one day claim that the Jews lived on land that did not belong to them and expel them. He therefore preferred that the brothers stay in Goshen which belonged to them by right. Jacob’s family immediately moved away from the capital and settled in Goshen.

Based on ‘The Midrash Says’ Joseph noticed that the by Rabbi M. Weissman brothers withdrew. He therefore called to them Joseph recommended with gentle words. He said, that his family settle in “I shall act in a brotherly Goshen, rather than in the mannerIf towards you even capital. you would like to share your words of wisdom, please submit your article of no more than 500 words to nick@hale-community.org.uk

TEFILLAH TIPS

Do you pay attention to which siddur you use to pray with? People often instinctively select the same kind of prayer book every single time. Others may use a siddur from their barmitzvah, or their wedding, or as a gift, simply because of the sentimental value. In some cases, these can be dated editions, and it may be that choosing an

KING AHEAD COMMUNAL EDUCATION

In The Spotlight Robyn Price & Josh Lee This week Kiddush is kindly sponsored by the Lee and Price famlies in celebration of the recent engagement of Josh to Robyn. The families, both members of our Shule, are delighted that the pair have found love, and that they don’t need to go too far to see each other! Robyn and Josh are even hoping to settle in Hale after their wedding in Israel in October. Robyn and Josh, both 27, have known each other for many years, but only started dating four years ago. The Lees moved to Hale from Prestwich two years ago, but have only really started getting to know the Prices since the engagment was annoucned. Josh is a property investment consultant, and Robyn is an area manager for Aldi, and also maintains a healthy food eating website and blog, with her friend Lucy. We extend Mazaltov wishes to proud grandparents Rosalind and Eddie Price, Pat and Danny Herman, and to Ann Lee, and we thank Nikki, Steven, Linda and Barry for their hospitality.
