MESSAGE FROM THE CEO I PRINCIPAL The 2019 Annual Report celebrates 10 years since the Haileybury Foundation was established and this marks an opportune time to celebrate and recognise the accomplishments made since inception. For almost 130 years, Haileybury has been committed to providing an academic advantage to every student in its care. To ensure this advantage is maintained along with the independence and sustainability of Haileybury throughout this century, we require the ongoing assistance from the Foundation. The Haileybury Foundation works to enable the School to gift a Haileybury education to capable boys and girls who would otherwise not have this opportunity, as well as to improve and create facilities which meet the needs of Haileybury students of today and future generations.

Haileybury is well known for its warm and supportive community. I thank all who have supported the Foundation and the development of a philanthropic culture at Haileybury for the benefit of our students. I look forward to working in support of the continued development of our Foundation, so that we can ensure the sustainability of our wonderful School for the future. I wish to acknowledge the extraordinary leadership of the Chair of the Haileybury Foundation, Mr Neil Sutcliffe, whose passion, energy and commitment combined with his expertise has been integral to the success of the organisation since its inception. Annual Report on Giving

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the Annual Report on Giving 2019 for the Haileybury Foundation. While this publication is about our achievements over the last calendar year, it also marks our 10th anniversary. In this regard, notwithstanding the great efforts of all of those who have assisted in our growth and development over the years, a special note of gratitude goes to Tom Poulton, Chairman of Council, whom we might best describe as our ‘Founding Father’ (pun intended). While the concept of establishing a Foundation had been discussed at Council level over many years, it was Tom who placed it firmly on the action item list, making the very straightforward case that, if Haileybury aspired to be a ‘great world school’, it must have its own Foundation. The rest, as they say, is history – thank you, Tom. While we have only started a multi-generation journey to help ensure that Haileybury lives on in perpetuity, I can say, with some pride, that we have come a long way over these past 10 years: As 2019 ended, the combination of Foundation investment corpus and pledged bequests reached $14 million, compared to less than half a million dollars at the end of 2010 There are 13 Foundation Scholars in 2020, rising to 18 Scholars in 2021, compared to what was only an aspiration for the first such scholarship in 2010 All groups within the Haileybury community are now active donors: the parents’ Voluntary Building Fund has funded 10 projects across all campuses; the Staff Giving Fund is funding its first scholar this year; the Old Haileyburians Class Giving is well supported across multiple leaving year groups; and every Parents & Friends association provides support each year

With such a solid base from which to build upon, we have the opportunity to grow and become a substantial philanthropic body by 2030. As your Board, we are busy formulating a long-term strategy to achieve that goal and I look forward to sharing it with you during this year’s quarterly news bulletins. Of course, as I write, we all find ourselves, one way or another, amid a health and economic crisis in early 2020. I reflect on my words from the 2018 Report: “ ‘charity’ would be more clearly defined as ‘giving for people’s immediate needs’ – such as food, water and health – while ‘philanthropy’ would be more distinctive for its focus on ‘giving for long term betterment.’ ” I appreciate that for us all, in the immediate term, ‘charity begins at home’ – focusing, let alone donating, to a philanthropic cause, is not likely to be high on the agenda. However, as the fog clears and normal life begins to be pieced together again, take a moment to consider: this Foundation, through your generosity, may well have funded the education of a future epidemiologist or immunologist who prevents or tackles another such pandemic – especially since Melbourne itself is a global centre for medical research. That is the true power of educational philanthropy. In the meantime, as Chairman of a charitable trust, I would like to extend our best wishes to you and your family in this very trying time – stay well. NEIL SUTCLIFFE CHAIRMAN, HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION

Through the efforts of our Development team, the Haileybury Foundation emblem is now well recognised throughout our community.

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT This annual report of the Haileybury Foundation is a celebration of you, our generous community, who continue to support and contribute to our great School. The best thing about Haileybury is you. If you had to make a list of all the best things about Haileybury, we could probably guess what you would put on it. The gardens. The fig tree. School plays and concerts. The Tattoo. Aikman Hall. The Pipes & Drums. The feeling of being surrounded by your close friends, cheering Haileybury to victory at Saturday morning sport. The experience of being mentored by an amazing staff member in a classroom where brilliant teaching is consistently happening. The pride that comes from knowing that every time a new challenge crops up, anywhere in the world, chances are a Haileyburian is helping to address it. But what if Haileybury had to make a list of all the best things about itself? What would it say? We’ll tell you. It’s YOU. THE BEST THING ABOUT US IS YOU.

6

Annual Report on Giving

Because you’re the one cheering Haileybury to victory at Saturday morning sport. You’re the one supporting programs and initiatives that give our tenacious, enthusiastic students access to the best educational experiences. You’re the one who sees an area of need on campus, or in your own corner of the world, and does what you can to fill it. You’re the one who makes all our favourite things – all of our best qualities – possible. So, thank you for being the best thing about Haileybury! Haileybury’s Foundation Board is proud to foster a community that is united in its aspiration to give our students the best experiences in order to ensure that Haileybury’s vision to be recognised as a great world school continues. As you read these pages and learn of the amazing things your generosity powers, I can’t emphasise enough how grateful we are for your support. Haileybury succeeds because of you. Together, we are changing lives forever. Thank you. SCOTT DORAN VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI RELATIONS Haileybury Foundation is pleased to announce that since our inception we have increased our total Foundation corpus to over $6 million. Haileybury’s future can be assured of being in good hands thanks to the continuing support of our community, who include future, current and past parents, alumni, current and past staff and supporters of Haileybury. For many people, fundraising has historically been seen as a transactional activity, however at Haileybury we see it as much more of a partnership, built on trust and a unified vision for our School. I had the privilege of attending over 50 events in 2019 and at each one I was constantly reminded of the incredible opportunities that we have provided our alumni and continue to provide students at each one of our campuses. The Haileybury Scholarship Fund has a clear aim – to support those children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend Haileybury. Since its inception the Haileybury Scholarship Fund has received over $2.3 million in donations, which we have proudly distributed to children who would not ordinarily have had the chance to attend our wonderful School. We thank each of our donors to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund. Your contributions are changing lives forever. Rija Khanal (OH 2008) who appears on the front page of this report is testament to that. Rija is a former Foundation scholarship recipient who is now in training to become a paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital, a position she may be unlikely to have if she had not been the beneficiary of such wonderful support.

In 2020 Haileybury Foundation will be providing a total of 13 scholarships. We are incredibly thankful to our wonderful donors who have contributed so generously to the following 13 scholarships: • Robin Fildes Scholarship

THE IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING

KAYLA SALMONS Kayla Salmons is currently studying at Haileybury City and commenced her Year 12 studies in 2020. Kayla is the beneficiary of the Robin Fildes Scholarship. Kayla hopes to commence a course in psychology upon completion of her VCE. Kayla would not have been able to attend Haileybury had it not been for the generosity of Old Haileyburian and former OHA Medal winner, Rob Fildes (OH ’58). Rob is Chairman of the Fildes Group of companies, a business specialising in labels, packaging, printing, consumables and software support programs to Australian pharmacies, hospitals, commercial kitchens and retail packaging. Rob also had a very successful sporting career playing Centre Half Back for Collingwood from 1961–63 and ranked No. 1 in Australia and No. 14 in the world in Decathlon in 1971, earning him the accolade of ‘best all-round athlete in the country’. He was also President of Athletics Australia.

Rob outlines that “for my scholarship, I was looking for an outstanding student with all-round abilities including academic, social and sporting. Because of my sporting background I was hoping Haileybury could find an outstanding young boy or girl with potential to excel in sport but also with a strong character, self-discipline and work ethic”. Kayla is an outstanding basketballer who has competed for Victoria at numerous National championships. She also plays for the Altona Gators in the Under 18 Women’s Victorian Championships as well as being a star performer for Haileybury in the APS/AGSV competition where they aim to go back to back after triumphing in 2019. Kayla is excelling at Haileybury and thriving on the incredible opportunities that have been presented to her.

“My teachers and classmates have been welcoming and helpful through this transition making it easy for me to settle in and do well with my studies. My time at Haileybury has given me the confidence to realise that I can achieve anything that I put my mind to.” KAYLA SALMONS

RYAN ZHANG Ryan Zhang commenced at Haileybury City in Year 7, 2019. Ryan was the beneficiary of the Gary Bailey Memorial Scholarship donated via a bequest in memory of Gary, who sadly passed away in his 20s. Gary’s father, Arthur, wished for the scholarship recipient to be a positive contributor in the community in which he/she lived. Ryan certainly fulfils this and is enjoying being part of the City Singers, Chamber Strings and Jazz Band as well as competing for Haileybury in inter-school swimming and cross country. Ryan is also heavily involved in the Drama program and performed in the musical, Mary Poppins. He was honoured to take up the part of Mr Banks. He has made such an impression in his first year at Haileybury that he was chosen as Boys Middle School Captain for 2020. Dominic Linossier, Senior Deputy Head of Campus at City, reports that Ryan’s presence “is a positive one among not only his cohort, but also the broader Boys Middle School community.”

“2019 has been an amazing year for me and one that I will never forget. Meeting new amazing people who would later become close friends of mine, meeting marvellous new teachers and getting involved in many extracurricular school activities. I want to thank you and the Bailey family for allowing me to come to this fantastic school.” RYAN ZHANG

For many alumni and friends of Haileybury, a charitable bequest is the easiest way to make a gift to the School. By means of your will or other estate plan, a bequest may be made to Haileybury in general – or may be applied to a purpose of your choosing, such as a scholarship, or building works at a specific campus of which you are, or may have been, affiliated.

2020 SCHOLARSHIPS

Wednesday, 29 January, was an incredibly exciting day for five new students who commenced their journeys at Haileybury. Each one of these students was awarded a Haileybury Foundation Scholarships after a rigorous selection process conducted by individual donors and members of the Haileybury Foundation Board. We look forward to tracking their progress as they continue their journeys. All have made a wonderful start.

HANNAH CHARD – CLASS OF 1988 SCHOLARSHIP In 2020 Hannah commenced Year 7 at Haileybury City, thanks to the generosity of members of the Class of 1988. She has immediately made an impression at City through her willingness to become involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities. Hannah has involved herself in Debating, High Intensity Interval Training, and has enrolled in the Compass Award. Outside of school, Hannah enjoys fundraising for charities. She has identified Wheelchairs for Kids with Cerebral Palsy as one organisation she loves to support. She also enjoys dance, calisthenics and reading about the history of World War II. Hannah is extraordinarily excited to have been selected in the Dance Jazz team for her summer sport. Hannah comments that “Haileybury has been amazing and my year has started off wonderfully. It has been an incredible start to 2020. I have enjoyed every day of school and all the wonderful opportunities there are to take advantage of. The teachers are so enthusiastic and always go out of their way to help you and find ways to engage with you.”

VINITH IMAYAVASAN – DOUGLAS TRAVIS (’74) SCHOLARSHIP Vinith has been fortunate to have been gifted a scholarship at Haileybury supported by Old Haileyburian and former AMA President, Dr Douglas Travis. Vinith commenced his Year 9 studies at Berwick this year. Vinith has made a terrific start to Year 9. He notes that “the teachers and students that I have come across during my start at Haileybury across all campuses have made me feel like I belonged there and that I had a role in this vast community.” Douglas is passionate about the opportunity he was provided at Haileybury and comments that “I have seen many patients who could have carved a brilliant career, but the inability to afford an education at a leading private school denied them the opportunity to nurture and grow their brilliance into something that could transform ordinary into greatness. These experiences have humbled me and made me realise I could make a difference to a gifted and talented student and assist in providing them a Haileybury education so they can go on to be a brilliant mind and change the ordinary into the extraordinary. I am proud to support the Haileybury Foundation and look forward to seeing its students achieve great heights made possible by the contribution of those of us who were privileged to have a Haileybury education.”

KENNEDY JACOBY – 1892 CLUB SCHOLARSHIP Kennedy is a beneficiary of the 1892 Club Scholarship. The 1892 Club is made up of a group of regular donors who contribute $500 or more on an annual basis. We are fortunate to have such a group of committed Foundation donors. Kennedy commenced at Haileybury Castlefield in Year 7 at the start of the year. He has really enjoyed forming relationships with the teachers and students while learning new skills like Chinese and cricket! Kennedy is a very keen sports person and loves competing in swimming, football, basketball and athletics. He shows a natural flair for drawing and he enjoys designing buildings, spaces and clothes as well as drawing cartoons. He is keen on a career that will combine his love of maths, thinking, sport and design.

HARPER QUINN – G&A MCGEARY SCHOLARSHIP (IN MEMORY OF RUSSELL HOWARD) Harper began his Haileybury journey at Newlands in Year 7 at the commencement of 2020. Harper is a basketball fanatic and loves spending his time analysing and discussing the statistics of NBA basketball. He is also an avid reader as well as enjoying skateboarding and participating in a variety of community sports. Harper contributes time to social justice initiatives and has recently raised funds for Project Compassion. He is also passionate about raising money for brain cancer research. Harper’s mum, Mandy, is delighted that her son has this amazing opportunity – “Our experience at the School so far has been nothing less than incredible.”

FAITH KAUSENI – HAILEYBURY STAFF GIVING SCHOLARSHIP In 2019 Haileybury Foundation launched a Staff Giving Scholarship designed to contribute to a scholarship for a student who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to attend. Faith commenced in Year 7 at our City campus this year following the generous participation of staff contributing towards this scholarship. Faith comes to us from Zambia. She has displayed incredible resilience under adversity in recent times and we are extremely hopeful that her Haileybury experience will be one of fulfilment and educational success. Faith is interested in pursuing a career as a mechanical engineer and is becoming increasingly adept at playing Australian Rules Football, even though she is only new to the country. When asked what it meant to receive a Haileybury Foundation Scholarship, Faith’s response was priceless – “When I heard, I felt like jumping, screaming and running around the house crying and laughing at the same time! When I start at Haileybury I look forward to meeting different people and getting to know the people who provide me with this scholarship.”

Through the support of our donors, each of these students will have their lives changed forever. Thank you. Annual Report on Giving
