Thankyou to our 2021 Haileybury Foundation Donors

From the

Chairman With Haileybury passing its 130year milestone during February, the School’s rich and varied history, current era of excellence and optimistic future have much to make our community proud of. However, its ‘foundation’ all those years ago was more akin to a small business ‘start-up’, privately owned and operated, rather than one underwritten by a religious body or wealthy endowment, like many of today’s prestigious schools were gifted. Starting a new school to educate the growing Victorian middle class, just prior to what became the bank-busting economic depression of the 1890s, came with both high risk and return – evidenced by the long list of similar ‘start-up’ grammar schools from that era whose history was cut brutally short.

now truly thriving, was not through being gifted land and endowment to secure its future in perpetuity, but through a combination of academic excellence, community support, entrepreneurial endeavour, resilience and astute financial management.

the Haileybury Foundation is the ‘refounding’ of this School, then one of its core purposes must surely be to support scholarship places for those students who would otherwise not be able to attend: the gift of changing young people’s lives forever.

As such, it begs the question: if the School’s current level of excellence is worth preserving for future generations to benefit from – and perhaps even into perpetuity – surely now is the time to ‘re-found’ it and build the endowment that it was not blessed with 130 years ago? I sincerely hope that you join us on this journey, both now and over the years to come.

Through the generosity of our donors, to whom we are so grateful, 22 Foundation scholars excitedly began their 2022 academic year at Haileybury. In addition, many campus building projects have been completed through our Building Fund and we have a combined corpus and bequest register of over $15 million. In many ways, this marks the ‘end of the beginning’ for our Foundation – like the School itself, we began with humble roots in the last decade and have persevered

IMPACT REPORT 2021

From the

Vice Principal This year, 2022, Haileybury will celebrate its 130th birthday, commemorating its founding in 1892 and its leading position in Australian education. This year will see our community of current, future and past students, staff and families celebrate our great School. Central to these commemorations will be the consideration of the extraordinary contribution that members of Haileybury have made to our community. In many respects, the tradition and heritage of Haileybury has reflected the achievements of many Old Haileyburians and the contribution that these Alumni have made to the societies in which they live and serve. I look forward to celebrating 130 years with you all. Haileybury has been built and sustained during our 130 years through the philanthropic spirit and generosity of our community. Philanthropy sits at the very heart of our school. From

Rendall’s founding vision and Dickinson’s financial backing, to the charity work of Mothers and Fathers Associations, to today’s Haileybury Parents & Friends Committees, Haileybury has been supported by many. And, of course, the gift of education to a girl or boy who could not afford to attend our School changes their lives forever. The challenges of the past years have been met by our strong community, and the support of Haileybury’s Foundation is visible and felt. We look to each of you to give as you may, and we are indebted to those who support our worthy School. We are proud of the service of our Foundation Board, led by Neil Sutcliffe and supported by its advisors. I’m sure you will find this Impact Report inspiring.

Community giving

Haileybury 130 Year Heritage football jumper

Haileybury Foundation is indebted to our community groups for their support and belief in the work of the Foundation. Community is at the very heart of Haileybury and we are incredibly fortunate to be represented by myriad diverse community groups, all working towards a common goal of ensuring that our students have the best possible opportunity to succeed. The generosity of Haileybury Parents and Friends of Keysborough (HPFK) and Haileybury Parents and Friends of Castlefield (HPFC) has seen transformational gifts made to Haileybury Foundation, enabling three students to benefit from a Haileybury education. Both organisations do an incredible amount of work behind the scenes and we are grateful that some of the fruits of their labour have been directed to the Foundation, enabling students to benefit from an incredible educational experience. During the course of 2021, former members of Haileybury’s 1st Cricket XI and First 1st XVIII had the opportunity to purchase a Heritage numbered cap and football jumper respectively. Proceeds from the purchase of the caps and jumpers was directed to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund. Such was the popularity of each item that funds raised from each, along with support from the School and cricket support group, The

Hazlitt Club, enabled the addition of two further scholarships for the Foundation. In 2022 we have commenced the Charles Langtree Scholarship, named after Haileybury’s first ever VFL/AFL footballer and in 2023 we will launch the Gerry Hazlitt Scholarship. This scholarship, named after Haileybury’s first ever test cricketer, will be provided to a boy or girl who would not ordinarily be able to attend Haileybury and who has an interest in cricket. Haileybury’s 1st Cricket XI Heritage numbered cap

Haileybury’s alumni are extraordinarily proud of their School and committed to giving back. Nothing shows this more than the positivity shown through Haileybury Foundation’s Class Giving program. In 2022, four groups (Classes of 1982, 1984, 1988 and 2020) will take part in this initiative, coming together as proud Old Haileyburians to give back to the School that gave so much to them. Beneficiaries of Haileybury’s Class Giving scholarships will have their life changed forever. Later in this edition, you will read about the experiences of Caden Ong (OH 2021) who was the beneficiary of the Class of 2007/ Melbourne Foundation scholarship, the first of its kind for our Foundation.

IMPACT REPORT 2021

A significant impact

Leaving a legacy for life The Winged Heart Society is a special part of the Haileybury family. It is a community of people who have indicated that they have placed or plan to leave a gift in their will to Haileybury. A bequest is a wonderful way to celebrate your past while planning for the future.

In recent times, our community has been deeply saddened by the passing of two valued Old Haileyburians and members of the Winged Heart Society.

Peter Hicks (OH ’65)

Currently, three students at Haileybury are the beneficiaries of scholarships left through a bequest to Haileybury Foundation. These students would never have had this opportunity of a lifechanging education had it not been for this foresight. It is our hope that hundreds and eventually thousands of students will be able to benefit from the legacy left by proud Haileyburians across the generations. Haileybury’s Winged Heart Society provides our community members with a wonderful way to celebrate their past, while planning for the future. Membership of the Winged Heart Society allows members to connect at an annual luncheon, and to receive regular updates from scholarship students and members of the School Executive via a twice-yearly newsletter.

Kayla Salmons (OH 2020)

Mithul is extraordinarily grateful and comments, “I am grateful that I received the Peter Hicks Scholarship. Honestly, this is one of the greatest achievements in my life. I will do my best to make the School proud. Thank you so much, Haileybury, for this wonderful opportunity”. We wish Mithul the very best for his start at Haileybury in 2022.

By making a provision for Haileybury Foundation in your will, you can create an enduring legacy and help to ensure that future generations of students continue to acquire a lifelong love of learning and service to the community. Gifts in wills are the fastest source of fundraising income today. These funds have enormous potential to transform our future and deliver amazing outcomes for future generations.

Kayla Salmons (OH 2020)

Mark Reynolds (OH ’79)

Following graduation from Haileybury in 1965, Peter went on to study Engineering and Mathematics at Monash University and had a wonderfully exciting and varied career with Telstra in telecommunications research spanning 35 years. Peter also simultaneously worked as an engineer with the Australian Naval Reserve, with whom he served voluntarily for 50 years until retirement. Peter reiterated often that “Haileybury gave me a great start to life”. Peter left a substantial bequest to Haileybury Foundation and subsequently The Peter Hicks Scholarship has been awarded to a fine young man, Mithul Amarasekara, who will commence at the Keysborough campus in Year 7 in 2022. Mithul hopes one day to become a marine biologist so that he can “protect the Great Barrier Reef and the marine ecosystem of the world”.

Mark Reynolds loved Haileybury and his time at the School and was an engaged member of the OHA and Foundation right up until his death. Mark’s best friend, Peter Hepenstall (OH ’79) fondly remembers Mark as “the kindest and most generous man I have known. He loved school life and our Class of ‘79 was a big family. He excelled in football and cricket and was an extremely successful stockbroker even after a crippling illness rendered him in a wheelchair. Mark was loved by many and is missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him”. The Mark Reynolds Scholarship will commence in 2023.

Mithul Amarasekara, Year 7 2022

Kayla Salmons joined Haileybury in 2019 in Year 11 as the beneficiary of the Robin Fildes Scholarship. Robin was interested in assisting a student who would not otherwise have been able to attend Haileybury, and who was an outstanding all-rounder, possessing excellent academic results and one or more of drama, musical or sporting talent. Kayla was an outstanding recipient. She was a member of the 1st Basketball Premiership team as well as being an excellent academic student. Kayla’s outstanding talent led her to being granted a scholarship to Idaho State University where she reflects on her time at Haileybury and the journey ahead. > What did you enjoy most about your time at Haileybury? What I enjoyed the most at Haileybury was the amazing support from teachers and students alike, which really allowed me to elevate my ability and drive to achieve high results not only in my basketball career but also my schooling, which is equally if not more important to me. > What did Haileybury provide that was beyond your expectation? The teachers really outdid themselves and were completely beyond my expectations. Whenever you had an issue with something, they were always there to help; if you needed extra one-on-one time to fully understand a topic from class they would always stay back or schedule another time to help you. Everything they did was about helping students be the most successful they can be. Something I am forever grateful for. > How were you able to cope with the challenges that came with COVID-19? COVID-19 was not only tough on us VCE students but it was also tough on teachers and faculty trying to find the best way to

help us succeed in such unprecedented circumstances. During quarantine we were lucky enough to be able to continue schooling via Zoom, which helped me greatly as I was still able to ask questions and interact with my peers and teachers as much as I could. Online schooling was tough for everyone, but the ability of students, teachers and faculty to work together is what truly made the best out of a bad situation. > Tell us a little bit about your journey and how you came to be at Idaho State and how you are progressing with your basketball. I have been playing basketball for 11 years now and it is something I completely fell in love with. As I got older, the better I got, until I was given the opportunity to continue my studies in the U.S. on an athletic scholarship for Idaho State University. It’s amazing to have the opportunity to continue my studies while also doing the thing I love the most. Although adjusting to a slightly different style of play and rulebook was hard, I have only been getting better and better with my basketball and this is something I would not have had the opportunity to do if it wasn’t for Haileybury and their dedication not only to my basketball but also to my schooling, which helped me to strive to be the best athletically and academically that I could be. > What do you aspire to be doing in five years’ time? In five years’ time I do plan to continue my studies. I want to be a child psychologist and learning is something I enjoy and want to continue doing. I also plan to keep playing basketball. Whether that is back home or overseas again I haven’t truly figured out, but all I know is that I love both my academics and my basketball too much to give them up!

Caden Ong (OH 2021) Caden Ong joined Haileybury in 2018 in Year 9 thanks to support received from both the Melbourne Foundation and the Haileybury graduating class of 2007, led by Jason Perri. The Class of 2007 / Melbourne Foundation Scholarship aim was to identify a student who would not be ordinarily able to attend Haileybury and one that had excellent academic ability and a strong sense of community. Caden performed extremely well in his VCE exams despite being in lockdown for the best part of two years. He is highly appreciative of his scholarship and is immensely thankful for the gift that he has received. The impact of our donors has been significant. > What did you enjoy most about your time at Haileybury? During my time at Haileybury I thoroughly enjoyed the duality of the sporting and academic focuses that Haileybury has created. I personally found that despite Haileybury having a major focus on Academics the curriculum is structured so that the sporting aspect of school life helps to take you away from school. > What did Haileybury provide that was beyond your expectation? The support during COVID - 19 was tremendous from Haileybury being able to adapt so fast which constant government lockdown laws being changed. Haileybury being able to move around this barrier while still being able to provide the resources and education that they did during the last 2 years was quite amazing. > How were you able to cope with the challenges that came with COVID-19? I think that I was able to cope as the way school adapted the timetable to help fit a covid 19 scenario helped. Along with the frequent availability of teachers to help us whenever help was needed played a big role in being able to cope with the challenges from COVID 19. > What will you be doing in 2022. I will be studying commerce at the University of Melbourne > What do you aspire to be doing in 5 years time? I aspire to be working towards if not already in the private equity/investment/ banking sector.

All donations received on the day will be doubled, thanks to the generosity of our Matching Donors. Matching donors come from all parts of our community. They are alumni, community groups, volunteers, past parents, businesses and more. A number of events, activations and communication will be delivered to the Haileybury community over the months leading up to the day, to bring awareness to the campaign. Regardless of size, all donations count and will contribute to an amazing cause – one that will change a student’s life forever.
