REDUCED TIPS FOR HAIRDRESSERS A recent survey has revealed two out of three clients will not be tipping hairdressers when salons reopen. The survey, which was conducted by asktraders.com found 75% of clients are worried that using cash will leave them open to germs and infection. Senior financial analyst at asktraders.com Nigel Frith said: “It’s clear that a move to a cashless society is on the cards as consumers have been encouraged to use cashless payments during the pandemic.” He has suggested a change in behaviour for salons that allows tipping by either continuing to have a level of cash payment or making tips via cashless payment a clearer option for clients. 8 / hji.co.uk
UK Government Guidelines The UK Government issued its guidance for hairdressers and barbers on 23 June 2020. The guidance states that all salons must maintain 2m between clients or 1m with additional precautions, such as the use of screens. Face visors must be worn for all activities. Clients must be seen by appointment only. Salon and barbershop owners must keep a temporary record of all clients and visitors for 21 days to support the NHS test-and-trace system which controls outbreaks of the virus. No food or drinks can be consumed in the salon by clients other than water in disposable cups or bottles. The guidance does not ban the use of hairdryers. BUSINESS
HJ asks two salon owners and two salon managers how they have spent the past few weeks and the key measures they plan to implement ahead of reopening their doors LEARNING FROM SISTER SALONS IN DUBAI AND CHINA
EXPANDING EXISTING RENT A CHAIR MEASURES
Bree Davie, general manager at Trevor Sorbie is talking to her colleagues at Trevor Sorbie’s sister salons in Dubai and China. “Social distancing and hygiene are at the forefront of our planning to keep everyone safe. This includes the teams working in groups (no mixing), a marked salon flow, PPE, plus hygiene protocols such as cleaning between guests with disinfectant. The guest journey will be different at our front of house with card-only payments, no refreshments or magazines. The team will have vigorous training on the new processes before we open so everyone is safe and confident. Our six salons will open seven days a week with extended opening hours to accommodate all guests. Key workers and the vulnerable will get priority for the early slots where possible. We’re also considering price increases across our services to ensure our guests still get a personalised and high-quality experience.”
Ky Wilson, founder of The Social had a number of measures in place prior to lockdown. Here’s what The Social is already doing with some added extras to make the space as safe as possible for stylists and clients. “Each stylist solely takes care of their guest from the start of the appointment until the end. We will be limited to the number of stylists working and also the amount of clients that are in the building at one time. I personally will be limiting the number of clients I see per day. We’ll be offering extended appointment times to really take care of our guests and allowing additional time to clean down everything between appointments. We will use disposable towels, compostable disposable gloves, clean gowns for every client and compostable colour capes. We’ll also dispose of our waste, including hair and metals through the Green Salon Collective. These added extras will keep our stylists and clients safe.”
MAKING IT A FRESH START FOR EVERYONE
CREATING A THOUGHTFUL CLIENT JOURNEY
Ben Hards founder of The Square Salon & Spa has already set up glass screens which are placed between sections. “The screens will allow us to use 60% of our space and we’ve placed them between the basins to separate our team members and clients. Surprisingly, we actually love it, as it feels like a private booth! We’ve worked out a rota splitting the team in half to keep us trading if a team member falls sick and we’ll have a training day to educate everyone about the changes. I’ve been working on the business plan for the rest of 2020 and looking at our costs and projected revenue streams. This will help me work out any price increases and recruitment we will need to do. We’ve also looked at health and safety, risk assessments, PPE costs and supply. We see this as an opportunity and we’ve asked the team to look at this as a new start where we all have the chance to write the next chapter and grow stronger.”
Monica’s reopening advice L’Oréal Professionnel’s general manager Monica Teodoro shares her advice for salons and stylists preparing for the first few weeks of reopening. “Stay in touch with peers and customers alike as we must be
Sean Dawson, general manager at Adam Reed London is preparing for a safe reopening with a focus on communicating with clients during this time. “We have created a priority waiting list for each team member where we are even rewarding those enrolled with a discount on their first visit back to help them through their furloughing blues. All clients will have their temperature taken when entering the salon and will be asked to wash their hands immediately. We have divided our senior members into two teams who will be working three days each so we can continue social distancing and we will carry out a full training day with each team before opening. A client will only come into physical contact with one member of our team per visit as stylists will be carrying out all shampooing and colour removal themselves.”
prepared to learn from each other as we navigate the next transition into our ‘new normal’. It will be as important as ever to be there for our teams, keep communication channels strong to maintain positivity and give a space for any concerns to be voiced. We are working hard to support our salon partners and the industry. We have created 17 / hji.co.uk
digestible guides focused on returning to business and recommending hygiene and safety precautions to keep teams and clients safe. BUSINESS
Getting back to business will be vital once salons reopen. Follow business coach Liz McKeon’s five steps to help you adapt to the new normal
T
he coronavirus pandemic has caused a huge interruption to business. Be patient as it won’t last forever and we will adapt to a new normal and go back to ‘business as usual’. Changing times will help you as a salon owner to explore the structures within your business and more importantly how you will secure new business in the future. Take the right measures and you will turn this calamity around. There are five essential steps you will need to take to ensure you get back to business as soon as possible:
1. Redo your business plan
If you had a plan for your business in 2020 it probably needs to change now. Be ready to adapt and accept these changes. Every time there are universal shifts, there are also opportunities. You need to be looking for the opportunities right now. Define your salon’s current situation: What’s going well and what needs fixing? Determine your new 12 month goals and how quickly you plan to recover and get back to full occupancy? Create a strategy for how you will turn your goals into a reality.
2. Access your current financial situation
Now is the time to consider how to reduce your salon’s running costs. Get your financial housekeeping in order as it will give you peace of mind over the coming weeks and it will enable you to focus on your numbers on a daily basis. Reopen with a very clear
understanding of how much money is required to get the business back on track financially.
3. Rebuild your dream team
It is likely that most of your staff will join you once your salon reopens, but you may also need to find, hire and train new team members. With market uncertainty, team morale will likely be
Watch out for these red flags...
1
Don’t expect your team to pick up where they left off. Invest in team training to ensure they are post-lockdown ready.
2
Don’t settle for single appointments – make sure every client is on a plan.
3
Don’t bore clients talking about the virus, they are already suffering from ‘covid fatigue.’ Make sure consultations and conversations are super exciting.
4
Don’t get so busy in your salon that you forget to take care of yourself. You are the driving force and the engine behind your business so your health must remain your priority.
5
Don’t forget to enjoy the journey back to ‘business as usual’. 18 / hji.co.uk
SHUTTERSTOCK
Ensure Your Business Thrives Post Covid-19 down, so you will need to be proactive and highly motivating in your salon management role. Everybody in the salon has to believe their livelihood is based on the quality of the services they deliver and the products you are selling.
4. Reclaim your loyal clients
You will need this predictable income to sustain your business recovery. Make your clients your number one priority. Analyse their potential demand for your services and products. Review their history and have tailor-made plans ready to present and sell to them. Reactivate your marketing campaigns and execute your communications strategy.
5. Restock your inventory
Make sure you have sufficient stock from day one of reopening your salon. Keep in mind that you are going to have an influx of clients who have been going without your products and services for months. Now you have a fresh slate – no old stock taking up valuable space. Get your stock systems and processes in place and keep it that way going forward.

The Debate
Should dogs be allowed in salons? “Our guests love the special welcoming party that awaits them when they walk through our doors.”
“When a Great Dane walked in, we knew we had to put an end to any size of dog in the salon.”
Dogs have been right at the heart of Q Hair and Beauty from the very start. In fact, the salon was named after Q, my first Airedale rescue dog. I’ve always loved dogs, in fact, I’ve never quite trusted anyone who doesn’t like them! Q was a darling who became the first in a long line of Airedale rescues I adopted. The most recent was our much-loved Hester, who charmed our clients for many years and was sadly-missed when she passed away at a venerable age. Q Hair and Beauty is a luxury salon, but I felt it could appear to be too posh for some. Q debunked that myth – having her and her successors around has given it a relaxed atmosphere. Guests, as we call our clients, have always loved the dogs and a very special welcoming party awaits them when they walk through the doors. Nowadays it’s all wagging tails from our two beautiful golden retrievers, Bruce and Alfie, both of whom are ultra-friendly and love to greet guests and make them feel instantly at home and they are also great with kids. They are on duty at the Chichester salon several days a week, but on other days they accompany me or our managing director Dawn Lawrence Grant, to our sister salon in Midhurst. With the headquarters of Canine Partners, the national charity which provides assistance dogs to disabled people, being based just outside Midhurst, it was only natural that when we opened our salon there in 2017, we adopted Canine Partners as our charity. I often think of a photo I have of Bruce popping up when Dawn and I were signing contracts for the Midhurst salon looking so proud. We love being a dog-friendly salon and feel they bring so much to our team and guests.
I have a dog and he is a great part of our life. During lockdown he has been a lifeline for me and my family, however I do not think my salon is the right place for my dog. It doesn’t matter how clean they are, or well-kept or small or sweet, they should not be in an environment where attention to detail is paramount. However, we of course allow service dogs and guide dogs, which goes without saying. We used to let clients come in with small dogs that were generally very sweet and kept in a luxurious designer dog bag – until the day we had a client walk in with a Great Dane. The moment we refused to do the client’s hair due to the size of their dog, we knew we had to put an end to having any size of dog in our salon premises. As a salon owner you have to be very careful. Our mistake was to discriminate about size. We let the little cute dog in, but not the bigger one and we did not really make it clear or explain why. One of the most important reasons why you shouldn’t have dogs walking around your salon is some clients could have an allergic reaction, which is more common than you think, and also as they are walking in the street they can bring bacteria into your salon. Our eureka moment came earlier this year when we had to send a message to all of our clients apologising and explaining why we could not have dogs in the salon. We made the correct decision, even if we upset and maybe lost some clients, I feel it was the right thing to do. If you allow dogs to come into your salon and size does matter, please make sure your clients are clear on the reasoning behind your policy.

ella Professionals Come Back Colour Menu is a no-brainer. It will help you charge correctly for longer services post-lockdown, such as roots and refresh, and offer colour correction while maximising time and profit for you and your business. 1 Express Services Express Services such as face framing colour, partial highlights and glossing, are designed to give your clients a quick low-cost option while producing modern colour results in half the time. Plus, the services require regular maintenance, which will encourage clients to re-book more regularly. 2 Banish Your Greys Service The Banish Your Greys Service is a full coverage service to cover grey, add a dimension to existing colour, or blend greys away. The service includes long regrowth applications as you will require more product and appointment time post-lockdown. 3 Revive Your Blonde Service A toner should be included in all Revive Your Blonde Services. This is because after lockdown existing toners will have faded. Where you are lifting the hair you will need to replace the pigment you have removed, remove any unwanted tones and personalise the end colour result for your clients. 4 Colour Back on Track Service The Back on Track Service is designed for colour correction, which can be hard to define from a price point of view. Wella Professionals recommends choosing from one of the following: Tonal Overload (to remove unwanted tone), Colour Overload (to remove unwanted depth and tone), Perfecton Rinse (to even out existing colour prior to application) and New Hair Look (a consultation based on colour inspiration).

Extensions Cheat Sheet
Be prepared for the hair extensions mishaps you’ll be facing once your doors reopen with our guide to some of the most common client problems
Q: A client has damaged their hair after trying to remove extensions during lockdown – what should I do?
A:
“If a client removes hair extensions themselves at home it could cause damage. For immediate damage limitation I would recommend a break from extensions. To return the hair to optimum condition a weekly hair treatment regime should be put in place. A treatment such as the Balmain 5 Week Treatment or the Balmain Revitalising Treatment regime would be beneficial as it’s specially formulated for natural hair as well as hair with extensions. Advise your client to avoid using excessive hot tools and heat on their hair. If using heat tools, set them at a maximum of 160 degrees. A trim is advisable as this will promote new hair growth and hair will instantly look healthier and fuller. If your client cannot live without their extensions perhaps suggest a different method like Balmain Système Volume to help thicken the hair while it repairs. When replacing the extensions, I would position them in different areas to help the hair repair after the damage. At Sarai Hair and Beauty we would also recommend hair health supplements to nourish the hair from within and help to maintain healthier, shinier and thicker-looking locks.” Sarah Morrissey, salon owner at Sarai Hair and Beauty

EXTENSIONS NEED TO KNOW Help new clients understand the fundamentals around hair extensions post-lockdown Q: What are the differences between human hair and synthetic hair extensions?
A:
“The main difference is the quality of the hair. Human hair can look and feel just like a client’s own and a client will be able to use hot tools, wash and style however they want. Human hair extensions can last up to a year with good home care. Whereas, synthetic hair can last up to four months, but it can melt when using hot tools. Synthetic hair tends to have a lot of shine due to the plastic content and it will shred. A client will not be able to treat the hair like their own and it can take a lot of time and aftercare to keep the hair useable so it won’t look as good as when it was first fitted.” Anthony Johnson, art director at Sixth Sense Salon and Rapture Hair Extensions specialist

Q: My client can’t wait for an appointment to remove their extensions – what should I advise?
A:
“I have a lot of hair extension clients and usually I would never advise them to remove hair extensions themselves at home as it can be really damaging to the hair. Consider how overdue your client is for their next appointment and whether you can offer them an appointment with you as soon as your doors reopen? If you can’t and your client’s extensions are really grown out and could risk putting too much pressure on their natural hair you might need to provide some homecare advice. I have made an Instagram video on my IGTV for clients to show them how to remove hair extensions safely. It is crucial to let your clients know you are there for them if they struggle and maybe suggest a quick video chat to talk them through it. If your client is saving the hair to be refitted once they can get an appointment with you, I’d advise them to take them out in rows like we would in the salon and use a Hair Made Easy Easiweft or Easibond to keep them in order so it’s better for you when it comes to re-applying. If possible, I would also recommend your client asks someone else at home to help them with the removal process.” Heather Mackenzie at The Style Bar and Easiweft ambassador

Q: How do I know if my client is suitable to have hair extensions?
A:
“Hair extensions are suitable for almost any client. Picking the right application method for each client based on their own hair and lifestyle is important. Tape extensions such as Richy stickees for example, are ideal for most due to the quick application and removal process and they are super discreet for anyone who wants a really natural-looking result.” Jack Ball, Richy business development and education director HEATHER MACKENZIE

EXTENSIONS NEED TO KNOW How to remove different types of extensions When salons reopen you may be faced with new clients desperate for an appointment to get their existing hair extensions taken out. Mel Kasak, extensions specialist at Glamlox Hair Extensions explains the best ways to remove clip-in, tape, weave, fusion and micro ring extensions from your client’s hair and the tools you will need to do it. CLIP-IN EXTENSIONS:
Make sure your client’s hair is tangle-free. Feel through the hair and locate the clips that hold the extensions. Press the clip and gently slide the clip in the hair extensions out of your client’s hair. TAPE EXTENSIONS:
Apply a few drops of tape removal solution on the tape bonds and massage into the hair. Leave to soak for a couple of minutes and the tape should loosen. Peel the tape and the hair extensions should slide down. WEAVE EXTENSIONS:
Use scissors to cut the thread attaching the weave to the braid. Remove the thread with a pin tail comb. Next you will need to remove the braid from the hair.
FUSION EXTENSIONS:
Section the hair and work row by row. Apply keratin remover to the bond. Leave to soak for a few seconds to breakdown and dissolve the keratin. Squeeze the bond with pliers. Slide the extensions down and brush your client’s hair. MICRO RING EXTENSIONS:
Start the removal row by row by sectioning your client’s hair. Squeeze the ring with pliers so the flattened ring opens up. The extension should slide out. Comb away the loose hair.

TROY BARBER FOR GOLD FEVER
Q: My client’s extensions have matted. What should I do to resolve this?
A:
“Matting can happen for a number of reasons. If it occurs through the mid lengths and ends, my go-to solution is a boar bristle brush to tease any tangling out. Pair this with a nourishing detangling treatment such as the Gold Fever Mineral Spray. This will leave the hair with a silky finish. Lastly, always ensure you have educated your client fully with regards to home care so they know how to maintain and keep the hair in the best condition possible between salon appointments.” Troy Barber at TLB Hairdressing and Gold Fever educator
Q: How do I pick the correct hair extension thickness and length for my clients?
A:
“To begin with, I would assess the client’s natural hair. An individual consultation is crucial because extensions are not a ‘one size fits all’ type of service. At Great Lengths for example, every client receives a bespoke transformation, whether this be a small or big change. If a client has shorter layers and fine hair I would never go too long or too heavy. The aim is to make my client’s hair look like their own natural hair but fuller, healthier and with more substance and body. If a client feels the side areas are sparse, add a few bonds or GL Tapes to fill in the gaps. When a client has thinner hair but it’s particularly long, I encourage minimal amounts of hair to be added throughout to thicken without adding too much weight because less is more. The secret is keeping it natural with both thickness, length and colour. The days when clients wanted masses of length added that wasn’t necessarily needed and certainly didn’t improve the look or appear at all natural have long gone.” Emma Choremi, director at McQueens Hairdressing and Great Lengths expert

EXTENSIONS NEED TO KNOW How to choose the right extensions for your clients? Salon owner and and international educator for Remi Cachet, Abigail Nicholls explains how to choose the right option for your clients. CLIP-IN EXTENSIONS
Clip-ins are for a client who wants to try how the extra hair feels in the hair or wants them just for a special occasion. You can advise brides to try clips to add more hair to an updo. Everyday wear of clip-ins is not recommended as over time the clip attachments can have an impact on the same attachment area. Other clip-in hair pieces are also available such as ponytails and hair buns. TAPE EXTENSIONS
Tapes are suitable for clients of all hair densities and work well for those with fine hair. Tapes are also perfect for adding extra hair pieces to frame the face. Tape extensions are not suitable for clients with an oily scalp or oily hair. WEAVE EXTENSIONS
Weaves add volume and allow a large amount of hair to be fitted over a shorter appointment time. Weaves are suitable for clients of all hair densities but other methods might be better for fine hair. If a client wears their hair up this should be considered in the placement. FUSION EXTENSIONS
Fusion extensions are suitable for all hair types. Fusion extensions are also the most versatile of methods as you can customise the strand weight to be a perfect match to the individual section of your client’s hair. MICROLINK EXTENSIONS
This method is also called the micro ring method as a section of hair is pulled through a copper ring lock. There are options for tip shape, size, as well as locks sizes and colours. It gives you flexibility and ensures strands are matched to your client’s hair. These extensions maintain an equal weight ratio on the hair section where the extensions are applied.
MOUNIR, SEAMLESS1
Q: How can I cut hair extensions to blend in with my client’s natural hair?
A:
“Before talking about the new cut, the first important point is to evaluate the client’s current haircut. The placement of the extensions is also important to create a final blended seamless look. You must have the vision of the look you would like to achieve before you start. Make sure you colour match with your client’s hair or if you are completely changing your client’s hair colour, it is important to choose a shade that will give them a beautiful colour melt from roots to end. Fulfilling all of these points will make cutting your client’s extensions simple.” Mounir, Seamless1 ambassador
Q: What aftercare advice should I give to my extensions clients?
A:
“Advise your clients to use the correct products for the extensions they are wearing as these products are carefully formulated to provide nourishment to the added hair and keep it in its best condition. Clients should brush hair from the ends, working their way up to the roots using a soft bristle brush to avoid pulling the bonds out. Remind clients to be gentle when shampooing the hair and only shampoo the extensions stood upright in the shower. Shampooing forward can cause matting and lead to breakage. Condition from the mid-lengths to the ends and ensure all product is rinsed out of the hair properly. Squeeze the excess water out of the hair and dry the hair at the roots. If your client’s bonds have grown down really low, encourage them to keep their hair tied back in a loose ponytail as opposed to removing them at home. Remind clients that as salons have been closed for over 10 weeks, all tapes will need to be removed as they will have reached their wearing period. If left in too long they can start to cause breakage.” Sarah Sullivan, Hairdreams UK technical advisor HAIRDREAMS

Ceira Lambert has a successful extensions business in Dublin. She combines working with regular clients, celebrities and influencers with educating. Here she shares how to use extensions to grow your business
EXTENSIONS
Meet the
extensions artist Why did you decide to become an extensionist? When I was training to be a hairdresser aged 15, I always wanted long hair. Back then all that was on offer in Ireland was synthetic hair extensions. They were so bad I used to have to put them in rollers and dip them in boiling hot water to get a curl as I could not use heated tools on them at all. I also had to do the same to straighten them – minus the rollers. I remember thinking there has to be a better way, so I did some training courses but I ended up doing them my way and actually teaching myself. All of a sudden my name got out there without me even realising it and before I knew it I had a huge hair extensions clientele. Since I trained with Gold Fever my client list has grown even more. I was Ireland’s first hair extensions educator for the brand and the role has given me the opportunity to build some lovely relationships with so many other salons all over Ireland and the UK. What’s your favourite style? I love styling extensions in a loose wave and I do it in such a way that the curl or wave will hold for a few days. Clients don’t need to worry about styling their hair every day which protects the condition of their natural hair while wearing the extensions, which is an extra bonus. What are the biggest challenges facing the extensions industry? I get so frustrated when someone tells me they won’t wear hair extensions because they’ve had a bad experience in the past. I always probe a little further and often find the individual who had issues in the past used a non-qualified hairdresser with cheap hair and glue bonds. Extensionists play such an important role because they can make or break the level of self-confidence a client has in their hair and themselves. Imagine someone who has suffered hair loss due to chemotherapy. If in the wrong hands, the damage caused to that woman will not stop at the hair
level – it will destroy her confidence and self-esteem. On the contrary, if she goes to a qualified extensionist who uses quality tools, the transformation would be so clean and powerful she would never dream of going anywhere else.
and bonds at Gold Fever and we make sure our tools are only given to those who know how to use them. You can have the best product in your hands, but if you don’t apply it properly your clients will be left disappointed. This is why we invest so much in education.
What do you love most about working with extensions? I love making women and transgender women feel happy by restoring and boosting their confidence to sky-high levels. The look on their faces when they stand up and stare into the mirror is the most powerful adrenaline rush for me and it makes me realise the importance of what I do. I love helping clients get their hair back and kick-starting their journey to feeling like themselves again. There have been so many happy tears and new friendships made over the years.
How can extensions be used to grow a hair salon’s business? Hair extensions are an essential service that I believe every salon should offer. There is a common misconception that hair extensions are only used to provide length. The truth is 80% of my turnover with hair extensions comes from women who want more volume. Length is not for everyone, however the volume factor will appeal to many of your clients. Volume can be achieved by applying a few strands in specific areas of the head. My clients’ jaws drop when they see the difference that only 25 to 50 strands of the same length as their own hair can make. I always have a small stock of extensions in the most popular shades. When a client comes in for a blow-dry, I offer them five or 10 strands free of charge, which requires little time to apply. Most of the time they call me up after a few days wanting more. Trying is believing for many clients. Another tip is to offer clients instant highlights or lowlights by applying a few strands of hair extensions. It means they won’t need to chemically alter their hair and you can achieve two objectives at the same time – colour and volume.
What are the biggest mistakes extensionists make? The quality factor must always prevail over price. Your client may want to save money by purchasing a cheaper brand, but the cost of this decision is far higher than the few pounds they save. Quality hair, bond and application are everything. It’s that simple and your clients will be eternally grateful to you for explaining this to them. When you can tell someone is wearing hair extensions, it means the quality and application are substandard. We use high quality hair

says: “We owe it to our staff and our customers to do as much as we can to keep them safe and testing is an obvious way to build trust.” He adds: “We’ve taken advice from experts in occupational health, Express Medical, to help us introduce the testing to staff across both our sites and we have permission from staff to determine their virus status.”

R
uffians barbershop founder Andrew Cannon believes everyone needs to be more than ready to reopen. He says: “When we open, we must not just ‘grab the money’. We must make sure the experience, atmosphere and most importantly, the enjoyment of having a haircut is shared with every single customer who comes into the salon or barbershop as our industry is about people, service and atmosphere.” It will be a challenge to recreate the same atmosphere with social distancing in place, however Andrew remains positive. “I hope that all salon owners will make it their priority to reopen the right way and show everyone we are a passionate industry and we are not cutting corners or lowering standards. We must come out of the lockdown more driven and determined than ever to elevate our experience and the social cohesion that is unique to barbershops and hair salons.” 45 / hji.co.uk
The Barber Club team will be tested using finger-prick blood tests, approved for professional use in the UK, which identify if they’ve had the virus and are building up antibodies. The Barber Club’s aim is to get a picture of who’s been infected in the past and is now safe to work with clients as well as those who will need to be monitored more carefully.
Free Mental Health Training Initiative Free mental health training for hairdressers and barbers is available throughout June and early July in South West England. The initiative is a collaboration between The Lions Barber Collective, the NHS and the South West Mental Health Clinical Network to help improve clients’ mental health. Hairdressers and barbers can sign-up for a four-hour free session providing the skills and tools needed to recognise mental health issues and ask clients direct questions about emotional wellbeing. “You’re more than just a barber or hairdresser. These past few months have been incredibly challenging for us all. We’ve all had our own experiences and emotions and if you have been feeling it so have your clients. BarberTalk training will help you to prepare for those emotional conversations with your clients,” explains founder Tom Chapman. SMARTER Not HARDER When you return to your salon consider the changes you could make to improve your work/life balance, says NHBF’s chief executive Hilary Hall
O
ne unexpected result of lockdown is many salon owners have realised how much time they spend at work, which means missing out on friends and family time. Many have vowed to make some real changes when they reopen to achieve a healthier work/life balance. “There are a number of steps you can take to make a positive difference to your way of life while still protecting and even improving the financial success of your business,” says NHBF chief executive Hilary Hall. Sort out your prices and cash flow If you want to work smarter, not harder, you must get your prices right, says Hilary. “You must ensure you are charging enough to cover your costs and make a profit. Don’t be afraid to increase your prices if you need to. The vast majority of clients will understand and stay loyal to your salon.” Sorting out your cash flow forecast is just as important, says Hilary. “It may sound obvious to say that you need to have more cash coming in than going out but running out of cash is a major
cause of business failure.” To find out more about taking control of your cash flow go to: nhbf.co.uk/cash-flow Decide on your opening hours When you have dealt with the initial influx after lockdown, decide on your opening hours and stick to them, says Hilary. “Your clients will soon get used to your new routine and will understand that you are no longer staying open to offer last-minute or ‘emergency’ appointments. Don’t allow yourself to be pressurised or made to feel guilty.”
stock levels are maintained. “This is a win-win situation,” says Hilary. “It frees up your time and it shows you trust your staff and you’re interested in their career development.”
Make the most of salon software “Salon software is extremely sophisticated now and you should take advantage of all the time-saving advantages it offers,” says Hilary. “For example, you can use it for online appointment booking, appointment scheduling, automatic email marketing and appointment reminders, financial reports, feedback Don’t be afraid to delegate surveys and staff management.” Make the most of your Join the employees’ individual NHBF before More top tips talents and skills by the end of July Other top tips to work delegating tasks that they 2020 and quote smarter, not harder, will be happy to take HJJ25 to get £25 off include increasing retail on. “Shorter hair on clients with a petite frame can be beautifully classic while still showing off an outer strength. This mid-fade undercut delivers, not only a sleek look that accentuates fine features, but also fierce face framing with loads of texture and movement achieved using slightly different styling. This is a fun, versatile and multidimensional look that can be worn forward for an effortless style or sleek and polished with a touch of pomade.” Whitney VerMeer

Tilt the head forward.

Repeat on the opposite side.

Point-cut to create movement in the hair.
Always use one hand to stabilise the head while cutting.
2
Section off the parietal ridge to ensure a balanced shape.
3
4
Cut to the top of the ear.
6
Taper the hair lower while removing length and bulk.

15
Pull the ear down to connect the front to the back using your guide. Comb hair after each cut.
Use the Andis Slimline Pro Li trimmer to blend from skin to hair for a seamless transition.
Start the cut on one side and create a guide with the blade of the trimmer on high speed.
Refine your blend by tilting the head forward and using the c-stroke technique.
Part hair in the middle for balance and pull hair taut to connect the transition vertically.
Clean up any additional stray hairs.
Create pie-shaped 90-degree sections throughout the crown.
16
Using a quick c-stroke motion or fanning technique helps eliminate a line of demarcation.
How to create the look!
18
Finish this look with a pomade, such as the Limited Edition Andis x Uppercut Deluxe Pomade, to bring out the texture for an effortless look or to go smooth and sleek.

•Define your mission I believe your salon should reflect what you aim to achieve with your clients’ hair. 86 / hji.co.uk

G
ennaro Dell-Aquilla started hairdressing 20 years ago and since then he has developed his own professional colour system using plants and flowers. His mission was to reflect the natural quality he gives to clients’ hair within the interior of his salons. Gennaro has four salons in London, including the stunning Notting Hill Salon, which he opened three years ago with a sleek and sophisticated interior filled with natural materials. The Notting Hill unit was a hair salon before he took it over but it had a 1980s-style interior with many chairs and poor quality hairworks. It took him three months to completely redesign and refurbish the salon with all of the interiors coming from Italy. This included the luxurious Carrara marble, which can be spotted in different varieties throughout the premises. Marble is a feature that Gennaro was keen to include in each of his London salons along with wood and metal. He believes this combination creates a luxurious look but keeps the atmosphere ‘cool’. The salon features seven styling stations, a make-up station and a backwash unit from Italian brand Maletti. Earthy colours and lots of texture are a recurring theme throughout the
space and lighting was a major part of the design. As Gennaro points out: “We all know how important good lighting is for us to do our job behind the chair. Our salons feature a mix of cold and warm light. The idea is to use lighting colours that look very close to what you would see if your client was sitting in natural daylight.” The floor is made from a mixture of wood and tiles to give the space a home from home feel. While, the walls are covered in a paint that reveals gold leaves beneath the surface to reflect the salon’s rich and beautiful style. Gennaro was keen to present his natural colouring display within the salon as it is one of the salon’s key points of difference. The biggest ongoing challenge for Gennaro and his team is the size of the space. He says: “We thought the size of the salon was enough to accommodate demand. However, there have been certain days when space for clients has been at a premium.” Gennaro’s mission with each of his London salons (Wimbledon, London Bridge, Chelsea and Notting Hill) was to create environments that reflect his aim to give clients beautiful hair using natural ingredients. The opulent materials and the earthy shades throughout his Notting Hill premises has definitely succeeded in ensuring clients feel like they are in safe hands.
• Take time to reflect It’s important to look deep inside yourself and see who you are and where you want to be as this will help you to achieve the perfect salon for you and your brand.
• Consider your materials The natural colouring process is an important part of the Gennaro Dell’Aquila salon brand and this is reflected by the natural materials featured within the salon’s interior.

CAREERS
Buying Back YOUR Brand SHUTTERSTOCK
Can you tell us about your hairdressing journey?
Frederic Fekkai shares his experience of buying back his namesake haircare brand from a conglomerate and the complexities of making a brand sustainable
Where did you learn hairdressing?
people creating hair content and putting it straight up on Instagram, which makes sweeping floors on the salon floor less appealing.
I realised very quickly that hair and hair salons were treated as a commodity, so I said, let’s do something different. Let’s make a luxurious salon that’s not pompous but offers a clean, healthy, fun and sexy space. We made sure everyone that worked there was specialised so colourists were purely colourists and stylists were purely stylists. I learned hairdressing in Paris and then I moved to New York at a very young age. I was doing photoshoots as well as styling models and working backstage at fashion shows. How has the industry changed over the years?
People are much more aware of creating hairstyles and fashion that is believable. Trends aren’t so outrageous – everyone follows trends from Instagram and Pinterest, which looks great in many countries. What’s your view on the lack of apprentices in the industry?
It’s difficult to find talent. I think this is because of social media as people want to be different and hard work isn’t as attractive as it used to be. The biggest issue facing the industry is less young people wanting to do hair in the salon. There are so many young
What were your concerns about buying back your brand and changing the formulation?
We spent nine months testing the products and sometimes it didn’t work, so we did it until it did work. I believe you have to take risks, otherwise you don’t get creative – taking risks is all part of life. I was fortunate to buy the brand back and now I get to do what I want with it. I want to be responsible for the environment, but also to have a beautiful professional product line – if it goes down the drain, it won’t kill the fish, which is great. Why is sustainability such a big part of the Frederic Fekkai brand?
My name is on the bottle so when I 92 / hji.co.uk
bought the company back, I wanted to ensure the brand reflects the right message. We cannot depend on the consumer or the hairstylist to convey this message – we need to do it ourselves. I wanted to bring an incredible product to the market that was also sustainable in its formula. It was achievable and we did it and we’re really proud of that. We try to make sure everything we do is sustainable so in the salon we don’t use foils for colouring, for example. How can clients be more eco-friendly at home?
It is our job to educate people, but it’s also to deliver a product that is risk-free. For the consumer, it’s about educating them to use the product correctly and not to overuse it. Clients need to be told to rinse their hair properly, take a brush to take the conditioner out and to alternate their shampoo with one for shine, volume and colour. What is next for you and the brand?
I have three new collections coming out – all spaced out over the next nine months with three different ranges. We’re going to have a shea butter line and one for the scalp. I want to make everything more sustainable. The idea is to make sure we offer clients creative solutions and we’re environmentally responsible at the same time.
The cutting edge to your creativity

INSPIRATION
Life Through a Lens
r e k c e w u a h c S Indira
TONI&GUY’s award-winning international art director is best-known for thinking outside of the box with her avant garde creations. Here are five of her all-time favourite images Feathers on a hat
“Alexander McQueen’s 2009 collection was my inspiration for this image, which I did in 2013. McQueen used feathers on a hat, and I loved the way it looked like a haircut. This was one of the cheapest avant garde pieces I’ve ever created as it was made from all the cut offs and recycled pieces to resemble a bird-like finish. As a hairdresser we know hair wefts can be very expensive so using recycled hair made it cheaper!”
1970s feel
Inspired by nature
“This is part of my winning British Hairdressing Awards collection from 2011. I like this image as it represents where I grew up in Switzerland. Nature was a big inspiration for me. This image was inspired by the praying mantis which is a unique insect with an elegant posture. I wanted to create 'weirdness' but the black background and candle-like lighting gives it a romantic feeling.”
“This was my first entry for London Hairdresser of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional. I love it because I also like dressing up. I was inspired by Gucci to create something luxurious and expensive and I love the 1970s feel. I’m dedicating it to Iris Apfel who is still cool at 96 years old and has an amazing style with lots of colour.”
TONI&GUY Mainstage
“This is one of my favourite looks from the 2018 TONI&GUY Mainstage show. I love being on stage in front of thousands of hairdressers and working with the team on editorial hair. This wig was created using synthetic fur and hair pieces to give detail on the face. We used this technique to get models with pretty features who won't have their hair cut.” 96 / hji.co.uk
Mastering the technique
“This is one of my favourite techniques. I’ve become well known for this technique and I've put my stamp on it. I worked out a way to make hair look like the embellished carved stone that we see on historical buildings.”
