WEEK 3 | Structure Mass and Space

Katrineholm Market Hall Architects: JAJA Architects The affordable housing on the upper floors are based on a modular system that allows for repetition in layout, cutting down construction costs and an organization that ensures optimal daylight conditions. The terrace and main living areas are located along the south facade away from the traffic and towards the main plaza. The facades language consists of the structural framework, the terraces, opaque walls and movable sun shading. The different elements form a facade expression that is both cohesive, repetitive and playful.

17

WEEK 3 | Structure Mass and Space

study on existing urban fabric

Piazza della Signoria The Piazza della Signoria is an L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. It was named after the Palazzo della Signoria, also called Palazzo Vecchio. It is the focal point of the origin and of the history of the Florentine Republic and still maintains its reputation as the political hub of the city.

Loggia dei Lanzi The Loggia dei Lanzi consists of wide arches open to the street, three bays wide and one bay deep. The arches rest on clustered pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The wide arches appealed so much to the Florentines, that Michelangelo even proposed that they should be continued all around the Piazza della Signoria[citation needed]. The vivacious construction of the Loggia is in stark contrast with the severe architecture of the Palazzo Vecchio. It is effectively an open-air sculpture gallery of antique and Renaissance art including the Medici lions.

study- cafe interior & atmosphere & materialization

6T7 Espai Café- Indoor cold atmosphere Project details building type: hotel and catering trade, cultural construction, café/bar, gallery interior work material: concrete, fair-faced concrete, metal, steel Architects: MSB Estudi Taller Client: Raquel Martín, 6T7 Espei Cafe Location: Carrer dels Sastres, no35 Olot, Girona, SPAIN Project Year: 2011 Area: 160m2 The clientele is largely the same, but in his design, the architect adopted a language with bare, grey, limewashed concrete walls that were meant to reflect the image of masonry one finds in the town. The finish is warm and gentle; steel was chosen with a dark brown tone and dark streaks that gives a natural texture to the piece. Natural grey wall texture is a great background for art works, that are changed from time to time. “We wanted a neutral space to respond to the location, integrated in the context of the neighbourhood. This space had to be empty, clean and sober. Its walls are a place for exhibitions, for contemplation.” –MSB Estudi Taller At the centre of the cafe stands a preoxidized-steel sculptural furnishing object that creates compartments for sitting in the quieter part of the L-shaped space and that merges with the counter in the livelier entrance zone. In one of the facades facing the street, there is an element, which filters, blurs, divides the light. A vibration element that provides texture, roughness to space, in contrast to the smooth surface of the walls and furniture. It’s a hand-made window panels. Woven from steel wire, they add an uneven texture to an otherwise neutral environment. “A handmade piece to humanise the space, intentionally made to get close and merge architecture to the people”-MSB Estudi Taller
