SPHINX COMPLEX FINAL REPRESENTATION 2.1 Masterplan analysis city scale Maastricht has several public squares or area's. They can be divided into different categories. Varying from very highly public squares like the Vrijthof and the Markt to small residential squares. In the old city there are many residential squares situated between the main public area's.

The larger and most prominent squares of Maastricht are located in the old city centre and connected by large shopping streets. The smaller residential squares are more hidden behind these streets, but they are still located very central in between the main squares.

MSc1 Heritage & Architecture studio Zehui Li No.4511492 29-01-2016

The largest squares in Maastricht are the vrijthof and the Markt. Other squares al less visited, like the residential squares. They are mainly visited by the residents themselfs.

The Sphinx area is situated in between the industrial area and the central residential area of Maastricht. The Sphinx are lies on the border of the city centre next to the Frontenpark.

The Bassin lies within a short walking distance of the Vrijthof and the Markt. It has many restaurants and art galleries. The north side of the Bassin will be part of the new urban development in this area.
