elcome to the W Winter edition of My Halcyon Days. One of the main motives for people moving to a Halcyon community is to downsize. Large family homes, a lot of furniture, lawns and swimming pools to maintain, often with only two people rattling around and it all becomes a chore rather than a pleasure. That was certainly top of mind for us when we chose Vision by Halcyon. Smaller house, less garden to maintain and the security of being able to lockup and travel at our leisure. Little did we realise that in fact we were embarking on a much bigger life.
but also physical and mental wellbeing. We have tried new activities and continued with old ones, an opportunity not always available to older people living in the suburbs. We knew no one when we arrived, but now feel part of a close-knit community, a very valuable social asset which belongs to us all. The traditional version of retirement is not built on such a strong network of connections as is available to us here. Certainly we lead a busier life than if we had remained in our family home and a more fulfilling one than we imagined when we first moved into Vision four years ago.
We thank our fellow homeowners for sharing their lives and activities with us. We know we are very privileged. Please enjoy this edition and some of the interesting stories from our communities. Anne Diamond, Vision by Halcyon SHARE YOUR HALCYON DAYS Want to share your Halcyon Days with us? Send your story to my@halcyondays.com.au
The reason for this is of course because of all the friends that we have made. We know all our neighbours and because we are of the same generation we have much in common, and we all have a chance to participate in many activities together. We are stimulated to learn and acquire more skills; whoever said you can’t teach old dogs new tricks, has not lived in a Halcyon community. These social connections build a very strong sense of community. It not only encourages sociability

COVER STORY
Live, work and play or most Australians the idea F of ‘seniors living’ has been a place to move to after retirement or in the twilight years of life.
For a new generation, one that is still working but wants more out of life, the decision to make a move to a Halcyon community is one based on lifestyle rather than their age. Welcome to Generation X, roughly defined as those born from the early 1960s to around 1980, they slot in after the Baby Boomers and before the Millennials. Instead of listening to the Rolling Stones on an 8-track, they may have had Blondie or Wham playing in their cassette player or perhaps even Nirvana on a CD. At Halcyon we have a number of homeowners who are in their early to mid 50s and are still working fulltime – leaving the gates each day to head to work and coming home to a social and connected community.
4
Instead of having to mow lawns or maintain large homes, they are using their precious weekends to fully enjoy the facilities and opportunities community living provides.
MULTI-GENERATIONAL MOVE
hen Ruth Speight was given W the task of finding a suitable place for her parents to retire from their home in Tasmania, she and partner Ricky Tranter couldn’t go past Halcyon Greens.
“I’m one of six kids and we live all over Australia,” Ruth said. “We all went searching for a place for Mum and Dad and I found Halcyon and fell in love with the community.” Much to the chagrin of her five siblings, Ruth’s parents Ivan and Charmaine Clarke moved to Greens in June last year.
GENERATION X MAKES THE EARLY MOVE
“In the end it was their decision, but it really was the best option out of everything we had looked at for them,” she said. Ruth said she and Ricky thought it was perfect for her parents but could also see the appeal for the two of them, who work at the same northern Gold Coast school as primary teachers. “We have such busy jobs, we could see how the community could be great for our lifestyle,” she said. “Funnily enough, we are going to be closer to work when we move to Halcyon so we will spend even less time commuting.” The pair are very active and are looking forward to using the facilities as well as getting involved in the many activities on offer at Greens. “Now is the time for us,” Ruth said. “It’s our turn to be able to relax and enjoy the lifestyle, while still being able to enjoy our working life.”
etting off the ‘treadmill’ of G busy working lives and the maintenance of a large
suburban home was the catalyst for Natalie Schoenauer and Mike Mitchell to make an early move to Halcyon Greens.
The pair, both in their 50s, have high pressure roles in criminal law and IT, leaving home at 7am each morning for their busy days in central Brisbane and not getting home until at least 6.30pm most evenings. “I’m just over Brisbane, I’m over the constant pressure of corporate work and I feel like we should be enjoying life more than the treadmill we’re on,” Natalie said. “We’ve worked really hard and achieved the goals we’ve set out to achieve, but now it’s time for us to enjoy that.” Natalie credits an unusual set of circumstances for her and
husband Mike’s decision to buy a home at Halcyon Greens. The pair had bought a new puppy and Natalie had taken annual leave to get Kobe a Havainese, settled into life at their spacious Carindale home which they share with Zoe, a 10-year-old Llhasa Apso and 4-year-old Bichon Frise Mia. “I was home and had the television on in the daytime which I wouldn’t normally do as I’m at work and I kept seeing the ad for Halcyon and I thought ‘that looks bloody good’,” Natalie said. “I decided to do my research and ask lots of questions and I decided pretty quickly that it was exactly where I wanted to be.” She said Mike was away for work in Sydney and by the time he arrived home on Friday night, she was “hellbent” on making the move and she had the entire pitch for Mike “all scripted”. “I told him about the facilities, the lifestyle and amenities and how we could have a smaller home and
actually enjoy our life more.” Mike added: “I could see all the benefits as we really want to be able to enjoy our lives more while we are still young and active. “We’re so busy during the week and our weekends are spent working on the yard or the house, it doesn’t leave much time to relax and before you know it, the rollercoaster starts again.” Natalie said it was Mike who made the call and said “let’s throw caution to the wind and go and have a look”. Natalie said they called early the next morning and spoke to Kris Hailey, who said she was booked up that day but would let them know if there were any cancellations. “Kris called and said there had been a no-show and could we get there,” Natalie said. “We were about 30 minutes away at the fish markets, but we jumped in the car and headed straight down and the rest is history. “We fell in love with the place. It’s all just meant to be.”

GETTING OFF THE ROLLERCOASTER
PEOPLE Koi Boys with Ann Ryan
Let’s get the party started SOCIAL GROUP COMES OUT OF THE BLOCKS POST LOCKDOWN alcyon communities are designed to H provide our homeowners with the ability to do as much or as little as they like. Our homes are built to allow ageing in place while our facilities offer a platform for homeowners to form numerous recreation and sporting groups. When it comes to bringing the fun to a community, it is the social group which really gets the party started. At Halcyon Greens, the ‘fun committee’ is back with a vengeance after the restrictions and lockdowns of 2020. Under the stewardship of group president Ann Ryan and events coordinator Jenny Hale, the homeowners are spoiled for choice when it comes to the variety of events on offer this year. “Jenny and I get together and work out what the community may like in terms of music, shows, dancing and Jenny loves to dance,” Ann laughed. “We are such a large community so we have to be mindful of everyone’s needs. “Whether it is just a Sunday roast, a themed dinner, a 6
mystery bus trip, fashion parades, trivia or musical acts, we try to find something for everyone.” Ann said the best thing about being involved with the social group is having the opportunity to meet more people in the community. “It brings homeowners together from the single homeowners to the couples to socialise and connect with the rest of the community,” she said. “It’s great watching people who haven’t danced in a long time on the dance floor, seeing the people who have just joined our community happy and talking to new friends.” Margo Mott, fashion designer

Ann said the social group is run entirely by volunteers from the bar manager and bar staff to those who work in the kitchen for catered events, and twice weekly at the Box Office, where homeowners can pay for their tickets in person. “It is hard work at times with late nights and early starts but we have a great team on the social group and our “soldiers” who turn up to help out with the heavy lifting all help to make it happen,” she said.
Kelvin Hale and Ian Pynor
Ann said at big events such as the recent Friday night concert with the Koi Boys, paid bar staff are hired to carry the load and allow all social group members to relax and enjoy the evening. “We are spoiled for choice as you need to prioritise what you want to go to each week as there are so many things on offer.” she said.

he Halcyon Greens’ social group are T using their empties for their fundraising efforts with a program called Return It. Social group member Malcolm Sproule said each week a company came to collect all the containers in the three purple bins located across the community. “They provide us with the purple bins, they collect the containers, they do the count for us and then they deposit the money in our bank account,” he said.
Helen Holmes and Carolyn Rose
“They give us five cents per eligible container rather than the 10 cents we would get if we took it ourselves, which is a pretty lengthy process especially with the amount of containers we get here.” Malcolm said they were averaging between $30 and $40 per week, depending on what events are on each week. “When we have a big event on, we’re likely to fill two bins,” he said. Malcolm said the money goes back into the social group’s coffers and has been used for items such as a new hot water urn or to subsidise the cost of entertainers coming to the community. WINTER 2021 | 7

Holey Moley winner christens our new putting greens ark Duncan, winner of Channel M 7’s Holey Moley was a special guest at Halcyon Greens, where he talked about his experience winning $100,000 on the television show.
He also showed off his mini-golf skills, christening the new putting greens in the backyards of our new display homes. New homeowners joined Mark for morning tea on the Village Green where he spoke about his time on the show and the effect it has had on his life. “We flew to Los Angeles to film the show and then four days later COVID happened and we had to get home,” Mark, who works in waste management, said. 8
“Channel 7 ended up building the set not far from my home in Thornlands so it took me 15 hours to get to the first set and then about three minutes to the next one.” Mark, whose memorable beard made him a favourite with viewers and bookies who tipped him to win the show, defeated a professional golfer to take out the crown and the $100,000 prize. “I was the underdog on that night,” he said. “I was the amateur golfer, I wasn’t a pro. It was just me doing the job. “I just had a go, I had nothing to lose so I just went for it. Mark said Holey Moley had been a blessing, easing some financial pressure for his family and allowing
him to buy himself a new Toyota Hi-lux and a new set of golf clubs. “Holey Moley changed my life and Halcyon Greens has changed the lives of the people who move here,” he said. “It’s an amazing community.”

“Just let it happen. Just do it. It will work for you, it will wrap itself around you and you become part of the fibre of Halcyon Greens.” The couple have both been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for their volunteer work, which includes helping build school dormitories in Papua New Guinea, working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to teach villagers malaria prevention, leading teams to assist in countries such as Fiji, Thailand, Solomon Islands and Indonesia and of course helping people here in Australia. Their nomadic volunteer lifestyle had led them to live in a caravan for the past seven years, spending time on their daughter’s Gold Coast hinterland property while also travelling around Australia and the world. Heather, who earned the nickname “Hurricane Heather” from her husband for her energy and enthusiasm said they decided to move to Halcyon because they were ready for their “next adventure”. Rotary heroes head to Halcyon W
orking couple Heather and Ian Yarker’s advice to people contemplating making the move to Halcyon is simple: Just do it!
The pair, who still work fulltime and are active volunteers for Rotary, have just become owners of Halcyon Greens 300th home and have settled in quickly, taking advantage of the lifestyle the community offers. “It’s not a retirement village, it’s a lifestyle community and it’s very, very different and you see that when you visit competitors,” Heather said.
10
“When younger people visit they say ‘we want to be in here, we want these facilities, we want that friendship.’” Ian said the community was perfect for working people, as the lifestyle and facilities made it a pleasure to return to every evening, without the burden of any maintenance. “I just relax when I come through the beautiful entrance past the manicured landscape,” he said. “Then past the botanic gardens in front of the beautiful homes which have got proud owners who almost always come out and wave to you as you pass, it’s compelling.”
“We’d been to other resorts and had a look, but the facilities weren’t there that we thought we wanted to use together and enjoy together without going outside the community,” she said. Ian added: “You can feel the master planning when you walk around the community, especially if you’ve got any experience or background in that area and that for me is one of the most engaging aspects of the whole community here. “It’s not a commercial activity, it’s actually about people for people and the result is engaging without you realising that and I find it has exceeded our expectations. “We’re absolutely amazed at how enthusiastically and how quickly we’ve been welcomed and brought into the group that are already here, it really is something special.” Heather said their neighbour had delivered a batch of freshly baked cookies to their home the other night. “She dropped them off and said ‘you’re always working or out helping someone, next time I’m going to make you a dinner’.” “It really has been remarkable.”

On your bikes! MOFAH needs you Words by Syd Leach elcome to MOFAH at W Lakeside. For those who don’t know that’s the Motorcycling Old Farts At Halcyon.
The group has five members (so far). Syd Leach: President (only because I was the founder). Howard Cox: Secretary (the only literate member). Bob Marsh: Treasurer (he said he could count). Noel Mason: Ridemaster (the only one worthy of this title). Carl Spencer: Marketing guru. What we lack in numbers we sure do make up for in experience. Our combined age is almost 300 and collectively we’ve owned 37 motorbikes - including many “longgone-broke names” like AJS, BSA, Francis Barnett, Norton, Panther, Velocette and Vincent. Our club motto is simple…
Carl Spencer, Syd Leach, Bob Marsh, Howard Cox and Noel Mason
’The older I get the faster I was’. If we can find a sponsor, we’ll buy some club t-shirts with that slogan printed on. The group averages about three to four rides a month, each between 150 and 250 kilometres. We no longer talk about the joys of riding with the wind in our hair ‘cos we no longer collectively have enough to trouble the wind anyway. We don’t do rain, and these days tyres tend to wear out in the middle and not on the sides like they used to some 50 years ago. What we do have however, in abundance, is an unquenchable passion for motorbikes that started many, many moons ago. Our current rides are: Syd Leach: Royal Enfield Interceptor 650cc Howard Cox: Indian Scout 1133cc
Bob Marsh: Suzuki V Strom 1000cc Noel Mason: Kawasaki Versys 1000cc Carl Spencer: BMW R1250 GS Noel is a Sunshine Coast local who knows every motorcycle friendly road in the Coast Hinterland. He is the best ridemaster in the entire Halcyon empire, although of course, he is also the only one I know of. The club welcomes any riders from other Halcyon locations but would advise that Harley Davidson owners need board approval and must arrange their own return transport after breakdowns. If there are any other two-wheeled Mr Toads out there (remember Wind in the Willows) in the Halcyonosphere who want to join us, please email Syd Leach on syddyis@bigpond.com We look forward to hearing from you and all car drivers please remember what your wing mirrors are for. GARDENING
Green thumbs harvest all year round Words by Graeme Scott
Graeme and Merle Scott, Dick Hertslet, Doug Grant-Mitchell, John Ingram, Jim and Lenore Grant

Most advice around the cultivation of vegetables revolves around the classic four seasons - Spring Summer, Autumn and Winter.
ere at Halcyon Parks our H gardening group the Green Thumbs have gone from strength
to strength since planting our first edible garden in January 2015.
We had four garden beds back then and we harvested and sold our first crop in May that year. Since then we have added an additional 16 garden beds which are 6m x 1.5m x 0.6m high, which is the largest across any Halcyon community. We have around 26 members in the Green Thumbs, with nine hands-on gardeners who have several jobs like planting seeds, planting seedlings, digging over beds as they become vacant, fertilising, spraying and harvesting.
Here on the alluvial plain of Meridan Plains we do not experience the true four seasons. We have distinct hot and cool seasons and this has an effect on the production of some varieties of fruit and vegetables. For example we have had no success in producing good quality cauliflower, broccoli and broad beans. Lush growth but no fruit. From our experience based on what we have grown successfully over the past six years we can divide our production into three phases - all year round, hot months and cooler months. All year round: tomatoes, beans, spring onions, silver beet, bok choy, chili, capsicum, radish, lettuce, leeks and asparagus. Hot months: pumpkin, zucchini, squash, okra, marrow, corn, cucumbers and eggplant. Cooler months: cabbage, peas, turnips, beetroot, english spinach, kolrabi and daikon. We also planted a citrus orchard and we have cumquat, mandarines, limes, oranges, grapefruit, and lemons. We have also planted feijoa, bananas, jaboticaba and a passionfruit vine. We harvest at 2pm on Friday and sell the produce for a $1.00 a bag at 5pm at the Recreation Club. All proceeds are used to buy fertiliser, soil, netting and frames to cover the young plants.

Doctor in the house DEDICATED GP LOOKS FORWARD TO EXPLORING NEW PASSIONS AT HALCYON GLADES
Dr Robyn Mawer
eing a GP for more than 50 B years, Dr Robyn Mawer said work has always consumed her life. “I’m like a lot of other doctors, we work hard. I haven’t had a holiday for three years,’’ she said. She recently swapped a sixday-a-week job at a clinic in Hamilton, Brisbane, for a two-tothree day a week job at Health Hub Doctors Morayfield. “I’m working exclusively in the skin clinic. I love it. I think I’ve gone to heaven,’’ she said. In another major life change, Robyn has traded her twobedroom Hamilton unit for a new life at Halcyon Glades, which is ideally positioned between Brisbane and the beautiful beaches of the Sunshine Coast. “My daughter wanted me to move to Halcyon,’’ she said. 14
“When I got the job at the Health Hub Doctors Morayfield, Halcyon Glades just made perfect sense. “My daughter is close by in Fitzgibbon, I’ve got a good friend Jocelyn who lives in Caloundra, and I’m looking forward to signing up for the organised activities at Halcyon Glades.” “I think I’ll adapt well to community living.’’ Robyn says she has already been allocated a “buddy” to help navigate her way into the Halcyon life. “My husband died six years ago. There was very little neighbour interaction where I was living in the unit in Hamilton,’’ she said. “It’s very hard to come home to an empty unit. “I’m looking forward to having like-minded people around
me and taking part in the organised activities.” Robyn said now that she is only working a few days each week, she will use her time to take art classes, forage around the library for a good read, and do some planting in the garden. “My mother was a very keen gardener. I never had the time, but I hope I find out that I have her green thumb,” she said. “I’m usually just finishing a book or just starting a new one. I enjoy crime writing and EnglishCanadian writer Peter Robinson is one of my favourite authors.’’ Robyn said her new Halcyon Glades home offers her the space she needs to be independent, but at the same time it will allow her to embrace a new community.
THE HALCYON WAY
Paul Melville and Dr Bevan Geissmann
Should have done it sooner oth of us have the pleasure of B meeting and talking to Halcyon homeowners regularly. Indeed,
several of our family and close friends live in a Halcyon community.
One of the things we hear regularly is, ‘I should have done it sooner,’ and we ask, ‘well, why didn’t you?’ Often homeowners say that they thought a lifestyle community was a fancy name for a retirement village. At the end of the day, we’re nothing like a retirement village and that comes down to the fundamentals of how a lifestyle community operates.
Halcyon acts under different legislation, which in turn provides a much better financial model; no entry or exit fees, no stamp duty and you keep the capital gains on the way out. As you read in preceding articles, people enjoy the benefits earlier and earlier, well before retirement. The “why” you go to a lifestyle community is different …. It is more for rightsizing, freeing up capital and making time to enjoy yourself. The style of independent living also means that homeowners in a lifestyle community play a major
role in creating the culture, social fabric and connectivity that is the cornerstone of each community. Creating unique communities with different features and facilities to suit various people has also been essential to our process. Each time we design a community we learn something new. This not only helps us innovate, but it also improves and strengthens the operation of our existing communities, which our homeowners often tell us they truly appreciate. The best of both worlds
orn between a love for a rural T life and the lifestyle of Halcyon, Elaine and Russell Miller found the perfect solution in Halcyon Rise.
The couple had been happily living at Halcyon Greens in Pimpama but longed for a “more rural feel” when they discovered the new community at Logan Reserve would also bring them closer to their son at Yarrabilba. “We were thoroughly enjoying our lives at Halcyon Greens and had really settled into the rhythm of community life there,” Russell said. “We had moved from an acreage at Tamborine Mountain, actually we had always lived on acreage, and we missed the country feel.” They were impressed by what was on offer at Halcyon Rise and made the decision to put their Halcyon Greens home on the market, just 10 months after moving into the community. “We love the community and the friendships we have made there,” Elaine said. “There’s a real sense of shared values, empathy and caring for each other, it’s just wonderful.” The process of selling their home at Greens was an easy one, with the sale happening within an hour of it going on the market. “We had the open home at 4pm and by 5pm, Kris from the sales office had called us to come in as she said she had an offer,” Elaine said. “We went in and she said ‘well they’ve offered asking price, but there’s more.’ “They wanted to buy all of our furniture and even asked if they could buy our dog Millie.” Elaine said she doesn’t drink alcohol very often but had to ask Kris for a glass of wine. “She poured me a chardonnay and I had to sit down because we were in shock, it all happened so quickly,” Elaine said. The pair made a tidy profit from the capital gains from the sale of the home at Halcyon Greens and are now housesitting in Elanora while their new home at Halcyon Rise is being built.

“I had no idea she was coming,’’ Debra recalled. “I just burst into tears when I saw her. I hugged her so tight, I wouldn’t let her go. “Because of COVID-19 restrictions, I hadn’t seen her apart from a really quick visit we made to Melbourne at Christmas. “It was good for her to say goodbye to the family home at Calamvale and nice for her to see our new life at Halcyon Rise.’’ The McGeadys are foundation homeowners at Halcyon Rise, which is nestled conveniently between Brisbane and the Gold Coast at Logan Reserve.
They moved in after 21 years in Calamvale and already love the country feel and sense of community that comes with living here.
“The property has amazing amenities and a great vibe. I think I asked for the bank account details on the spot so I could put down a deposit,’’ Debra said.
While Debra still works as an auditor with the Queensland Audit Office, Graham has been retired now for five years and spends a lot of time away exploring Australia in his caravan.
“The houses at Halcyon are not little boxes. Our Lillydale home has two bedrooms, really large living areas and a generous double garage,” Graham said.
“I was in the big house at Calamvale by myself while Graham was travelling through Western Australia. He was worried about me being alone, so we decided to investigate the community living concept,’’ Debra said. “We booked in to look at five different villages. Halcyon Rise was the last place we visited. We knew straight away when we came up the driveway that Halcyon was the right fit for us.
“There are a group of foundation homeowners here now and we all enjoy a chat out in the driveway. There already is a strong connection and we look out for each other.’’ Graham is about to embark on an 18-month caravan journey starting with a crossing of the Savannah Way. “I’m going to be the FiFO wife,’’ Debra said. “When I can, I’ll fly in and join him on the journey. It is easy to do that when you live in a community like this.’’ WINTER 2021 | 19

type of lifestyle you want; sometimes it is out of simply deciding that “work” remains part of your self-worth, a sort of need to remain connected. For me, retirement came as an optional-extra to that other R-rated word: redundancy. I was considering grabbing that option by its cheeky red cheeks and smacking a sloppy kiss on its forehead and yelling “yippee”, until my GP informed me I was in good health (how dare she) and not likely to cark it anytime soon (exactly how soon?). You see, that’s when you start doing the mortality maths. What happens if I live to 100 and my retirement funds dwindle away to nothing by the time I turn 80? They say that between your kids leaving home to moving into a nursing home or some type of care, there are 8,000 days… That’s over 20 years to enjoy life and do all those things you never had time for.
n my parents’ era, when you got a few years Ieither beyond the “life-begins-at” stage, you worked or you were retired. There was no in-between, no semi-retirement.
Semi-retirement meant you’d given up driving trucks for a living. But it is the way today for more and more of us. Sometimes continuing to work past the “official” retirement age is out of necessity to help fund the
It is the sort of thing financial advisers love to rattle on about; whipping out graphs and pie charts with wild abandon. Good on them and good on the people who actually listen to them (they’re the ones reading this and going “tch, tch, tch”, before ordering another gin and tonic at the club), but I’ve always been one to fly by the seat of my pants, even if I won’t be able to afford pants in 20 years or so (wouldn’t that be a sight? The very embodiment of redundancy right there!). So, I’m not retired. Not even semi-retired when you add in all the free manual labour in the kitchen that invariably happens after you inform those smug MasterChef contestants on your TV screen that they should “toughen up, ’cause it’s not that bloomin’ hard … here, let me show you …” Ok, I best stop, I’m starting to rave – which is the other R-rated word that seems intrinsically linked (in my case) to redundancy and retirement.

Buyers can choose between a bigger home with a media room and study or have more outdoor space with a bigger yard and atrium,” Chris said. The Rainforest Series comes with the option of selecting from three Home Choices Packages. The Chef’s Selection Package offers Gaggenau appliances or further upgrades to the stone benchtops, sinks, fixtures and fittings. The Gardener’s Paradise Package gives the buyer the ability to work with Halcyon’s landscaper and landscape architect to design their 8m backyard. Thirdly, the Lifestyle Package provides the option to expand the master bedroom and rear patio, which will include an outdoor kitchen with wine fridge. Priced from $979,000, the luxurious lowset homes will set a new standard for over 50s living on the Sunshine Coast. WINTER 2021 | 23

Julie and Roger Buttenshaw
On the road again hen Roger and Julie W Buttenshaw put their Halcyon Landing home up for
sale, they were delighted to sell it in two days.
Even though their new home at B by Halcyon won’t be ready until early next year, they are using the time and the capital gains they made to head off on an eight-month road trip. “We will be travelling to Cairns to see the children and grandchildren,” Roger said. “Spending some time at Sorrento on the Gold Coast with Julie’s mum, visiting friends in country New South Wales and taking a trip down to McLaren Vale in South Australia. “Our address for a while will be ‘no fixed abode’ as we will be doing a bit of couch surfing.’’ The Buttenshaws had originally planned to take the trip in their new Horizon Banksia Fiat Ducato 24
ROGER AND JULIE’S NEXT BIG ADVENTURE
motorhome but had to make alternate arrangements when they were told that it would not be ready until November, hence the need for couch surfing. Roger (biology teacher for 41 years) and Julie (medical receptionist) retired six years ago and bought their first motorhome. “One of the first things we did after retiring was to buy an existing home at Halcyon Landing,’’ Roger said. “We realised living at Halcyon made it so easy to lock the house – know that it was safe and secure – and hit the road. We were travelling for about six months of the year, every year. We did 125,000 kilometres in that motorhome.” Roger said that the current booming real estate market meant that making the move to a new architect-designed house at B by Halcyon was financially easy.
“The block we have chosen points north, and this time we get to have input into the customisation of the new house, and we have chosen a design with a more open plan and bigger patio. “The fact that we don’t pay entry or exit fees, or stamp duty, makes this move economically viable for us.’’ Both Roger and Julie agree that so far, the highlight of their past travels has been a five-month journey around Australia in 2016 and 2017. “The best part was seeing The Kimberley in Western Australia. The red dirt there is amazing as was the drive down the west coast,” he said. “During the trip we caught up with seven other groups from Halcyon Landing at Streaky Bay, on the coastline of Western Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. That was pretty special too.”
GOOD NEIGHBOURS MAKE GOOD FRIENDS rian and Anne Keys lived at B Halcyon Landing for nearly eight years in a house next door to Tricia
Taylor. Earlier this year Tricia sold her house and announced that she was moving to B by Halcyon.
The Keys had been looking at B by Halcyon for some time and decided that the prospect of a new house was very appealing. “We have built a lot of new houses during our married life,” Anne said. “It wasn’t by plan - or by design that we ended up buying the block right next door to Tricia. We looked at all the land options at B by Halcyon and it just so
happened that the block of land next to Tricia suited us best.” “We are all happy about being neighbours again.” The Keys, originally New Zealanders who have been in Australia for more than half their lives, are currently living in rented accommodation outside of Halcyon Landing while their new home is being built. They hope to move into B by Halcyon in October. “Now that we are on our own, outside of Halcyon Landing, we really appreciate how good it is living in a Halcyon community. It really hits home when you don’t have those same friends around you every day.”
“Over the years living next door to Tricia we have been able to help each other on many occasions and have become close friends. It’s important to have good neighbours.’’ “We don’t tend to hold on to things – apart from each other. Life changes and you have to keep looking forward. “The number one thing for us with this move to B by Halcyon is the quality of the house. We have chosen the openplan Grand Kuranda design. It is similar to what we had at Halcyon Landing, it’s just that everything will have that new look and fresh feel again, and of course, living next door to Tricia!”

The Land of the Long White Cloud has some truly Great Walks. In fact, there’s nine of them – six trails on the South Island and three on the North. The 60-kilometre Abel Tasman Track, located at the top of the South Island, is considered the easiest. The coastline walk takes you through native bush, over limestone cliffs and along the Abel Tasman National Park’s beautiful beaches. It is rated as easy to moderate and you can do it over several days.

Graham rides into the sunset MARATHON EFFORT FOR HOSPITAL CHARITY Graham Flack and firefighters from Ormeau Fire and Rescue
fter nine “bloody hard” A 707km rides to raise money for children who have suffered horrific burn injuries, this year is Graham Flack’s swansong.
“I’ve grown up now, that’s enough for me,” the former fireman and Halcyon Greens’ homeowner Graham Flack laughed. “It was my ninth ride and we’ve raised approximately three-quarters of a million dollars so far.” This time around – after a two year absence due to COVID - Graham exceeded his personal target of $500, raising $674 for the cause. Channel 9 Gold Coast even came along to Pimpama to help him and the fire crew from the local station raise awareness prior to his big ride in Bike 4 Burns, run by the QLD Children’s Hospital.
Starting on 12 May, Graham and other riders from the Fire, Police and Ambulance departments rode each day for a grand total of 707km. The ride went for seven days with no rest, and he was with 37 other riders, all riding to raise money for the charity. Over the course of the week, the riders travelled through towns including Gympie, Murgon, Jandowne, Dalby, Millmerran, Allora, Ipswich and then came into Southbank in Brisbane on 18 May.

REBECCA SHARES HER LOCAL KNOWLEDGE You grew up in the area, what do you love about it? I know and love this area as I grew up in Pacific Paradise/Mudjimba, while my Dad lived in Bli Bli and I went to church and played a lot of inter-school sports in the suburb. I used to fish off the jetty as a kid with my Dad and three siblings and spent lots of time at the Bli Bli Castle too. When I had my first child 10 years ago, we were living in Bli Bli so this place certainly holds some very special memories for me as I have watched it grow from a very small town to the thriving area we see today.
What do you love about your job? One of the most important parts of my role (and the most rewarding) is being able to deliver happy outcomes to my homeowners and buyers.
I love seeing my buyers get excited to join our wonderful communities, it makes all the hard work worth it. I love that I get to meet a range of different people that become friends once they move in. I get such a kick when I’m showing people through the community and they call out to me when they’re doing Zumba or bowls or just going for a walk.
How do you help Halcyon homeowners sell their home? When a homeowner comes to sell their home, whether it’s to move to a different area or to another Halcyon community, I work alongside them from start to finish. From appraisal to help setting up their homes for sale, decluttering and organising photography or just have a cup of tea with them to allay any concerns they may have.
The difference in using a Halcyon consultant to a real estate agent is quite pronounced as many agents don’t understand the model. I love talking to potential buyers because I think the no entry or exit fees and no stamp duty model is brilliant. We also understand the culture and the connection of the people in our community. We want to be able to introduce people who will add to the depth and strength of our communities.
What do you do outside of the gates? My husband Luke and I have been married for 19 years and we are blessed with two sons Taj, six and Khan, 10. We also have a sevenyear-old dog, Chief, who is a big softy as well as five chickens.
Rebecca’s top things to do in the central Sunshine Coast: 1. W e spend a lot of time swimming and surfing at North Shore, Mudjimba and Peregian beaches. 2. W e love the walk ways from Cotton Tree to Mooloolaba and the Marcoola/ Mudjimba stretch. 3. W e love to eat out for breakfast after the beach at Cuba Street café Marcoola, Mojo’s, Cotton Tree or The Attic Café in Alexandra Headland. 4. T he kids are huge fans of Aussie World of course, but they also enjoy the national parks in the hinterland and the Buderim Forest Park. Taj, Luke, Khan and Rebecca

Julie Cooke is made anew by Kelly Borg
hen a client comes to me W and asks for a whole new look, there are a few things I like to discuss before we make a change. The most important thing to consider is the maintenance and whether they can manage the style by themselves at home. There’s no point getting a new haircut which takes a long time to style yourself, or you may struggle to replicate. Many of my clients swim, so they need to consider the fact they are getting their hair wet every day. When Julie came to me and asked for a new look, we talked about her lifestyle and what 34
she needed to make her life easy but also to feel great. She had the same hairstyle for many years and urged on by her husband Steve and their children, she took the plunge and went for a shorter style with some lovely warm highlights. She loves it and can’t believe it took her so long to make a change. I have around 200 clients at Halcyon Greens, both men and women, and it’s very rewarding to be able to help them feel great. They are so active and engaged, it’s a pleasure to be able to spend time in such a great community of people.
Kelly’s tips before you make a big change: 1. T hink about maintenance. Are you prepared to spend time styling your hair or do you prefer a wash and go look? 2. I f you’re thinking about a colour change, what is your base colour and are you ready for regrowth. For example, if your hair is starting to grey and you want a darker colour – your roots will be light. 3. F or those wanting to embrace the grey, it’s a good idea to have foils in lighter shades to balance out the hair to help ease the transition.

A little self care goes a long way Words by Terri Morrissy, beautician and masseuse, Halcyon Greens
Terri Morrissy in her element
assage may seem like a luxury, M but it is an important part of looking after our bodies as we age. A good massage will ease joint and muscle pain, stimulate circulation and help with lymphatic drainage. It’s also a wonderful way to relax and indulge in self-care and self-love, which is vital to us no matter what age. As there are a lot of very active homeowners here at Halcyon Greens, I treat a lot of my clients for general aches and pains. When you exercise it causes muscles to become tighter, so regular visits are a good way to loosen those muscles up and feel great.
Most importantly it keeps you supple and able to continue to engage in the many physical activities on offer in the community. Regardless of whether you have regular massages, the most important thing to remember is to stretch regularly. I can’t stress enough how a gentle stretch everyday will help keep those muscles loose, flexible and far less prone to injury. Everything you need for your self-care is here, at Halcyon Greens. We offer beauty services including manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials and eyelash tinting.
Terri’s tips for staying in great shape: 1. Regular massage 2. Stretching daily 3. Light exercise 4. Eating well 5. Laughter with friends WINTER 2021 | 35

BOOKS
Book club WITH RAY AND LISA MONICO, HALCYON LAKESIDE Ray and Lisa escaped the colder weather in Canberra to make a life at Halcyon Lakeside. Ray spent most of his career working for the Commonwealth Government, in recent years in IT management and procurement. Lisa ditched a finance career to study visual arts as a mature aged student and now enjoys life as an artist.
Ray’s choice – A Gambling Man Author: David Baldacci, Pan Macmillan, RRP: $16.00
I have read in excess of 34 books by American author David Baldacci, however this is the first featuring Aloysius Archer, a straight-talking WWII veteran who is fresh out of prison. It is set in the late 1940s and is a stand-alone novel unlike many of his others which are a series. This book appears to capture the spirit of the era, though I am not old enough to speak from experience! The characters are very interesting as is the plot. I do feel Baldacci’s other books are better but this is still a good read.
Lisa’s choice – Island Beneath the Sea Author: Isabel Allende, Harper Collins, RRP: $17.99
Isabel Allende is my favourite author and her novels are set in historical periods, often dark times. This is an older book (published in 2009) and spans four decades and tells the story of Tete, a young girl born into slavery in the 1700s. Tete is sold to a young Frenchman who has moved to Haiti to oversee the family’s sugar plantations. Her relationship with her “master” is complicated, and she falls pregnant with their daughter. The Haitian Revolution against slavery begins and the story moves to New Orleans where Tete is hoping to gain freedom. Allende’s ability to write with such passion about the strength of the human spirit against adversity is what makes her books so compelling to read.
Ray’s choice – Mary, Mary Author: James Patterson, Penguin, RRP: $16.99
This book is an older one of crime writer James Patterson and is one of the series featuring FBI agent Alex Cross. Like the rest of his books, it is a good read. It is fast paced, with the usual twists and turns expected from the thriller writer’s novels. The book is well written and engaging, intertwining both Alex Cross’ personal life and the crimes being investigated. It is not until the very end that you discover the real villain, which adds to the suspense. Again, a good story from James Patterson, though perhaps similar to other books with Alex Cross as the hero.

adies from Halcyon Greens were Lparade treated to an impressive fashion by former top model and fashion designer Margo Mott.
There are no buttons, zips and all pieces don’t require ironing. All of her collection is manufactured locally on the Gold Coast.
Margo once modelled for Karl Lagerfeld and many European fashion houses, but the Gold Coast native has had her own label - called That’s Me - for the past 17 years.
The 80 guests at the champagne luncheon were entertained by Margo’s fabulous presentation, which also included accompanying music by vocalist-guitarist Clive Hartnett.
All of the pieces in her collection are made to order to fit each individual women’s body shape and height.
