BUSINESS, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, LAW, TEAM LEADING AND CUSTOMER SERVICE We were recently crowned the Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award Winners in Learning and Skills at the 2012 TES FE Awards which recognise and reward the achievements of the wide range of providers working in learning and skills. This is our second TES FE Award, having won the Outstanding Innovation in Teaching, Training and Learning Provision Award in 2011. Putting enterprise and entrepreneurship at the centre of the curriculum at the Academy at Kidderminster is key to economic growth The practical ‘hands-on’ business related courses help learners to understand why it is so important in today’s highly competitive world for companies to provide excellent customer service to support them to meet their business objectives. Throughout their studies,

6

students have the opportunity to meet people from various businesses and be given the chance to use their experiences to help them to develop their own ideas. During their studies, learners will understand how the changing needs of customers has an impact on how they perceive the customer service they receive. The team leading qualifications provide the foundation for learners to develop skills in leading a team and making sure the team achieves its organisational objectives.

FASHION, RETAIL AND VISUAL MERCHANDISING

The fashion industry is worth over £20 billion to the UK economy and employs 816,000 people across a range of different job roles. Fashion designer, stylist, merchandiser, retail manager, teacher and magazine editor are just some of the industry paths that fashion Foundation Diploma students have ventured into. The Fashion and Retail department at Kidderminster Academy has an industry standard fashion studio that exudes excellence, ambition, innovation, and inspiration in all its learners. These are the first specialised Fashion and Retail courses offered in the Wyre Forest where learners work within real fashion and retail environments - the learners really learn by doing – the experience they get at the Academy will stay with them forever. Since opening in September, students have established

8

links and gained employment through ‘live’ projects and work experience placements. Companies such as New Look, Harvey Nichols, Debenhams and House of Fraser have collaborated with the department to produce visual displays, marketing concepts and personal shopping advice. We have a track record of success in external competitions - winning the Sunday Times fashion illustration competition and were highly commended in the international Fashion Against Fur poster competition which was showcased at the London Design Festival, winning UK Skills and reaching the final six of World Skills.

HOSPITALITY AND CULINARY ARTS

Over 2.5 million people work in the hospitality and culinary arts sector in the UK. The industry has an annual turnover of £90 billion which is worth £46 billion to the UK economy. This industry has the highest proportion of staff aged under 25 than any other work sectors and is an exciting, vibrant industry for students who have the right skills. All courses offered in the Academy give our learners the skills to be ‘work ready’ as they complete their programmes of study. Students work in professional kitchens to gain the skills, knowledge and experience to help them to get fulfilling job roles. Full-time salaries for waiting staff can be around £12,900 to £15,500 a year. Starting salaries for trainee restaurant or catering managers can be between £16,000 and £22,000 a year. Head chefs (chefs de cuisine) can earn

10

up to £30,000. A head chef working in a top hotel may earn up to £50,000. The hospitality industry is one of the UK’s key industries with huge growth prospects. It is the fifth largest industry for employment opportunities and it is forecast that by 2015 the industry will require a further 236,000 new employees. All courses offered at the Academy meet skills shortages in the region and students will have links with industry professionals throughout their studies.
