The Academy specialises in a range of Creative, Digital, Gaming, 3D Animation, Fashion and Retail, Entrepreneurship, Food Processing and Catering and Construction courses. The facilities are truly outstanding and provide a huge creative and cultural boost to the region to benefit students, the local community, new media entrepreneurs and local businesses. Employer directed provision at The Academy at Kidderminster Birmingham Metropolitan College have made a ÂŁ10m investment in developing an employer-led Academy. The Skills and Entrepreneurial Academy in Weavers Wharf, Kidderminster is an innovative collaboration with industry to create a wider and better choice of education and training for learners and employers in the Wyre Forest Region.

Vocational qualifications at the Academy range from Level 1 to higher education and professional qualifications. All our qualifications support learners to develop knowledge and skills which are workplace relevant and learners can progress to full-time employment, apprenticeships or onto Higher Education on completion of their qualifications.

Level 1 Qualifications BTEC Level 1, NVQ 1 (equivalent to GCSEs at Grade D-G).

Level 2 Qualifications BTEC Level 2, NVQ2, (equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Grade A*-C)

Students with a Pass grade will be considered subject to an additional assessment and/or supportive reference from their Personal Tutor. BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Vocational Programmes (1 year programme) The minimum entry requirement to study for a Level 2 Diploma is 4 grade Ds or above at GCSE which may include Mathematics and/or English, according to the requirements of the curriculum area, a Foundation Diploma, or a Merit grade and above at Level 1. Students with a Pass grade will be considered subject to an additional assessment and/or supportive reference from their Personal Tutor. In some cases a more appropriate progression route at Level 2 may be available. Foundation Learning Tier (Entry Level/Level 1) (1 year programme) Entry will be by initial assessment to ensure every student is directed onto the appropriate level of course, along with a satisfactory interview and supporting reference.

Our agile curriculum model has required a re-design of every aspect of curriculum delivery within the creative, digital and electronic curriculum. Learners learn by doing – the experience they get at the Academy will stay with them forever.

The fashion industry is worth over £20 billion to the UK economy and employs 816,000 people across a range of different jobs. The United Kingdom has a worldwide reputation for fashion design – new innovative courses at the Academy will give learners the skills to contribute successfully to this thriving industry. Studying fashion at the Academy will prepare you for the many career opportunities within the sector, including gaining skills and experience in • Fashion design • Illustration • Pattern cutting • Fashion technology and production • Textile design • Visual merchandising As a fashion student you will have the opportunity to explore design, concept, fashion production, styling, fashion photography and illustration and experimental textile design. With many job roles available such as sales assistant, retail buyer, personal shopper, this industry offers a diverse range of employment opportunities for students who have these nationally recognised qualifications. Retail is a fast-changing industry and more than ever before it is important that staff joining the sector have the right skills. Wyre Forest has a vibrant retail sector with a mix of independent and national retailers and the Academy will support these retailers in finding the right employees.

Microsoft Xbox, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Sega, Atari, Sony Computer Entertainment, Rockstar / Take Two, Codemasters, Nintendo all have a significant presence. Many of the best games companies started in the UK. The industry is big business and there is a continuing shortage of skilled staff. More than 22,000 people work in the UK games industry ensuring its place as a highly successful international games developer. This is a significant industry in the UK that has seen huge growth over the last 30 years. The courses offered at the Academy have been developed to give students a good understanding of the industry, and to give them the skills they will need for employment in this exciting area. Our dedicated games design and development laboratories are equipped with specialist gaming

hardware and software which are used in the industry. Students will have access to a full range of desktop applications and virtual learning environments. The development of Smart devices will be boosted by the creation of The Samsung Experience Academy which will be the Smart hub for the delivery of qualifications to meet skills shortages in these new technologies. This is the first Academy in the UK to provide training for Smart leading edge technologies such as Samsung’s flagship products including Samsung 3D Smart TV products and hand held devices. The programmes are designed to help learners to gain technical knowledge and practical qualifications and provide them with a greater understanding of the latest smart device technologies.

We are delighted to be launching our hospitality and culinary arts courses. We have developed partnerships with a wide range of catering companies. The food catering and hospitality industry in the UK employs over 2.5 million people and is worth over £66 billion each year to the economy. Employees within this sector include those working in hotels, restaurants, cafes, fast food outlets, pubs and clubs, as well as those who are engaged as contract caterers to other industries. This fast growing area of hospitality and culinary arts provides outstanding opportunities for students who have the right skills to work in this exciting industry. All courses offered in the Academy ensure our learners are ‘work ready’ as they complete the programmes. Studying at college is not all work and no play. We believe in having a healthy balance between your studies and the social life a college brings. We know our students will love The Piano Building atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff and fellow students, and the fact that there is so much you can do in your free time.

Careers and student advice The Student Services team will provide an array of high quality services for you to use during your time with us. Specialist staff are available to give careers advice and guidance and to provide you with information about financial support. If you are unsure which course is best for you, then you should discuss your options with one of the careers advisers, who will provide impartial advice and guidance to help you to choose the course that is right for you. We provide a wide range of careers information, where you have access to higher education resources to help you make well-informed and realistic decisions about future career plans.

Student mentors and student counsellors We want all students to have the same opportunities to achieve to their full personal and academic potential. The mentor/counsellor scheme operates on a oneto-one basis and is designed to remove any possible barriers you might have that are stopping you from reaching your maximum potential, whether the reasons arise from within college or outside. The mentors offer support with, for example, study skills, motivation and time management, and they are committed to helping you overcome any issues you might encounter on the path to successful completion of your course. The counsellors are there to listen and support you, whatever the problem.

Bursaries Those most in need will be eligible for a bursary of ÂŁ1,200 a year. This includes young people in care, care leavers, young people receiving income support, and disabled young people receiving both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance. Other students who need financial support to help them to stay in education or training may also be able

to claim a bursary to help with costs of transport, food, equipment or other course-related costs.
