Performance Notes All instruments Toward the end of the piece, all instrumentalists are asked to whisper the Icelandic words “sem á”, pronounced “sem ouw”. They can either appear within a given timeframe, to be whispered freely, or attached to a certain rhythm. Near the end of the piece, the conductor is asked to leave the stage, making the orchestra conclude the piece without any conductor. Woodwinds At some points in the piece, the flutists and oboists are asked to remove their headjoints/reeds and blow directly through their instruments. Diamond noteheads indicate notes produced by blowing through the tube without creating tones, i.e. only air. Diamond noteheads marked with consonants indicate air sounds altered with certain consonants. Notes marked with snap pizzicato signs indicate slap tongue. In addition to whispering, some players are asked to vocalize the consonant “sss” at some point in the piece. Dashed arrows to and from flutter tongues indicate gradual changes to or from a sustained note. Notes with “x”-noteheads indicate key clicks.

Brass The following mutes are needed for this piece: Horns and tuba: Straight mutes. Trumpets and trombones: Bucket mutes. Diamond noteheads indicate notes produced by blowing through the tube without creating tones, i.e. only air. In the horns and the tuba, air sound is filtered by indicating the number of valves compressed and released. Dashed lines indicate gradual changes of valves compressed. In the trombones, air sound is filtered by indicating the position numbers. Dashed lines indicate gradual slide between positions. In the trumpet, glissando lines with arrows indicate gradual changes between valves. When producing air sounds, stems without noteheads indicate position of beats within measures. At some point in the piece, the trumpeters are asked to turn their mouthpiece upside down in their instruments and blow through the tube. Notes with diagonal noteheads indicate tap on the mouthpiece with a palm. At some points in the piece, the horn players are asked to slowly bend the pitch down by stopping the bell with hand. Harp & Piano At some point in the piece, the harpist is asked to scrape a string of the instrument with a guitar pick. Voices Before the piece starts, the voice performers should be placed at certain locations, moving around the hall through a majority of the piece. A detailed location plan is provided in the voice score, but general instructions are as follows: - Voice 1 starts outside the main entrance of the hall. - Voices 2 and 3 start sitting in the audience on the ground floor. - Voice 4 starts sitting in the audience on the balcony. All the voice performers should have similar appearance, wearing black clothes and simple masks. The voice parts are notated as words within timeframes, i.e. the voice performer can project the word or words within certain margins of time. Boxes including numbers preceded by the letter L indicate the number of location, that is the place where the voice should be located or should be heading each time. The voices are often given a certain direction to project the sound to, that is indicated by “direction” or the abbreviation “dir.”. Voice 1 is asked to carry a megaphone and use it when indicated.

Percussion The following mallets are needed for this piece: Percussion 1: Bass bow, brushes, gaffer tape, hard wooden mallets, heavy felt mallets, sticks. Percussion 2: Bass bow, chime hammer, hard rubber mallets, hard wooden mallets, heavy felt mallets, sticks. Percussion 3: Bass bow, brushes, hard wooden mallets, medium yarn mallets, triangle beater. Timpani: Soft mallets. Notes with “x”-noteheads indicate events played on the rim of the instrument. Notes marked with “+” indicate rimshots. A tape sign indicates an event where gaffer tape is ripped off the bass drum. In addition to the whispering, the percussionists are asked to shout, speak and whisper the word “hah!” at some point in the piece. Strings A few abbreviations are used in the score in order to save space: c.l.t. = Col legno tratto. c.l.b. = Col legno battuto. s.p. = Sul ponticello. c.s. = Con sordina. s.s. = Senza sordina. Strings should always play non vibrato, unless indicated otherwise. Notes without stems that appear in boxes should be played as fast as possible, repeated for as long as indicated and not coordinated between players. Notes with “x”-noteheads without stems that appear in boxes indicate sections played on either the tailpiece or the lower bout of the body (specially indicated each time).
