This setting of Christina Rossetti’s poem Then Shall Ye Shout for unaccompanied double choir was commissioned by Help Musicians UK for its annual St Cecilia’s Festival service and first performed by the Choirs of St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral on 17 November 2021. Rossetti’s text describes singers biding their time and staying silent until the moment they are able to come together again and sing, loudly and with passion. Nicolo Paganini: Sonata for Violin Solo MS83

The Sonata à violin solo (M.S. 83) is an early work by Paganini that can be ascribed to the years 1796-1800, a period which includesworks such as the posthumous Grande concerto (M.S. 75), the Inno patriottico con variazioni (M.S. 81) and the Tema variato (M.S. 82)for violin. There are no doubts as to the authenticity of the work: the highly virtuosic experimental writing, the indications “Organetto” and “Flagioletto” and the use of the fourth string are all distinctive traits found in Paganini’s writing from this period which link the Sonata to the Inno patriottico con variazioni and the Tema variato. The most significant characteristics of this composition are its length and the three-movement structure that connect it to the Classical style, at least far as the first movement is concerned: it is written in sonata form, something rarely seen in Paganini’s solo violin works.

Specifically, the books covers: polyrhythms; polymeters; metric modulation; ostinatos; subdivisions; note group ings; rhythmic illusions; and more.

The 128-page book explains the difference between polyrhythm and polymeter, then presents practice suggestions and tips for absorbing these concepts. Bigeault begins with an 11-note theme that was her first experience with polyrhythm; this is used to introduce her approach to learning odd groupings and playing over ostinatos. Note groupings are fully explored and explained, then used to create advanced grooves. Groupings of 5 and 7 are detailed, and examples are presented in a wide variety of time signatures. Playing note groupings with one hand alongside binary or ternary beats on the other hand is also explored. Several useful tips are included, which are applicable to material beyond the book.
