This rondo for piano was composed in 1794/95 and has become known primarily by its sobriquet “The rage over the lost penny”. However, this did not originate with the composer himself, but rather added to the autograph later by another hand. In his own original title, Beethoven emphasised its “Hungarian” style, though he wrote “Ingharese” instead of “all'ungharese,” thereby emphasising the humorous nature of this spirited piece. Robert Schumann aptly remarked that “There can hardly be anything more amusing than this little tale. I had to laugh from the beginning to the end when I played it for the first time recently.” Beethoven specialist Joanna Cobb Biermann was responsible for revising the Urtext edition of this popular work in line with the latest research, while Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang provided his own fingerings for it.

The epithet “English Suites” – as with the “French Suites” – did not originate with Bach himself. In contrast to the six intimate French Suites, Bach’s English Suites adopt a grander tone, each one opening with a prelude in concertante style. Two of the sarabandes survive in additional versions that feature ornamentation by Bach himself; an impressive testimony to his intended virtuosic and opulent harpsichord style in these pieces. Despite the lack of autograph sources, the musical text of these works has survived extraordinarily well and reliably thanks to several contemporary manuscript copies. For this revised Urtext edition Ullrich Scheideler has undertaken an exemplary investigation of authentic variants, especially in the ornamentation. All are documented here, and made directly accessible to the player in the musical text itself.

The B major Sonata numbers among Schubert’s early piano sonatas. Composed in August 1817, it was not published until long after his death. The unusual key (for its time) shows the young Schubert’s delight in musical experimentation; in the same year he composed other sonatas in D-flat major, A-flat major and f-sharp minor. Typically Schubertian are the surprising modulations, and the abrupt changes of mood between lyrical passages and dramatic outbursts.

As the autograph score is lost, this edition is based on autograph sketches and on copies from the composer’s circle. The preface, by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl, and the detailed comments section, provide detailed information about the work’s genesis, and on the sources and readings. Fingering by pianist Martin Helmchen is a further highlight.

Bach’s Six Partitas form what is presumably the most famous and challenging collection of suites in music history. Bach was aware of the weightiness of his cycle as he initially had these multi-movement partitas, composed in Leipzig between 1726 and 1730, published in individual editions. This culminated in their publication in an anthology that proudly sports the opus number “1” in 1731. Their diversity of forms knows no bounds and the musical texture is infused with the most ingenious counterpoint, but at the same time performers will not miss out on the enjoyment of virtuosic playing in any way. G. Henle Publishers presents this magnum opus in a revised Urtext edition that consults the original editions as well as autograph sources while also extensively documenting the numerous entries in correction copies from Bach’s circle. Dvorák composed this concerto at his publisher’s suggestion. He drafted it relatively swiftly in summer 1879, but completing it was a more drawn-out process that lasted until 1882. He had the famous violinist Joseph Joachim look over the violin part, and also dedicated the concerto to him. But Joachim’s suggestions resulted in numerous reworkings, and he ultimately lost interest in the work. As a result, the world premiere was given by the Czech violinist Frantisek Ondrícek. This formally unusual work begins and ends with a sonata rondo, and adopts a Slavic tone throughout. After a lyrical middle movementit closes with lively Czech dance rhythms. This Urtext edition draws on both the autograph and on the first editions of the score, solo part and piano reduction. The solo part has been marked up by one of the concerto’s most knowledgeable exponents, world-famous violinist Augustin Hadelich.

Brahms’s First Violin Sonata in G major is also known by the sobriquet “Regenliedsonate” (Rain Sonata) because its final movement quotes melodic motifs from his two songs “Regenlied” and “Nachklang” (which likewise has rain as its subject). The dotted opening motif of the finale already pervades the first two movements, thereby contributing to the inner cohesion of this wonderfully expressive, elegiac work.

Brahms’s contemporaries enthusiastically received this sonata, which was completed in 1879. Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, a close friend of the composer, found that one has to “love it like little else in the world.” The musical text of this revised Urtext edition is based on that of the newly completed volume of the New Brahms Complete Edition, which guarantees the highest degree of scholarly precision.

Johannes Brahms:

String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 111

As with its companion work op. 88 from 1882, Brahms’s second string quintet was supposed to be completed in the relaxed atmosphere of a summer in Bad Ischl, but eight years later. The work’s first technical try-out in Vienna in October 1890, which Brahms described to his friend Clara Schumann as “not displeasing”, was followed by a fine-tuning of the work in close dialogue with musical friends such as Joseph Joachim before Brahms sent score and parts to his publisher Simrock at the year’s end. With its at times orchestral texture and stirring, typically Brahmsian rhythms, this cheerful work early on won the hearts of listeners and players alike, despite presenting the latter with some challenges. This new Henle Urtext edition is based on the New Brahms Complete Edition, for which editor Kathrin Kirsch has consulted all the autograph sources and first editions. With an informative preface it offers the best foundation for approaching this jewel of Brahms’s chamber music.
