Kalinnikov/trans. Glenn Cliffe Bainum/ed. Christopher Heidenreich The skillful transcriptions of the late Glenn Cliffe Bainum have proven to be a standard by which others are measured. This transcription is one of Mr. Bainum’s most monumental works. Basile Kalinnikov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky, died prematurely at 35 just as he was establishing himself as one of the great Russian composers. Originally published in 1958, this new edition features a revised full score and parts for optional antiphonal brass choirs. Samuel R. Hazo Combining brash and aggressive rhythmic figures along with more gentle moments and inventive textures, this impressive work by Samuel Hazo is truly a standout for advanced bands. The piece is built around a four-note motif, which is developed and expanded throughout. A middle section features more of a jazzy flavor with Samuel r. HAZO saxes in the spotlight accompanied by finger snaps. The rhythmic intensity returns, building towards a glorious full ensemble affirmation and bringing this exciting work to a powerful conclusion. Robert Buckley This exciting, innovative new work from Robert Buckley was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Band in honor of the 37th annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic in Alabama. Using a recurring two-measure loop, this uniquely constructed piece is built up around various musical building blocks that are constantly evolving and transforming. The music is dramatic and dynamic, with full-blown ensemble passages suddenly dropping to quiet, powerful moments without ever losing the music’s continuous drive. Following an exotic, bluesy middle section the piece builds, accelerating to a thrilling, rhythmic, percussive finish. A real tour de force! Samuel R. Hazo Translated from Gaelic as “Eternal September,” this marvelous setting for band is designed to take each listener back to their own vivid fall memories on a college campus. Commissioned by the University of Notre Dame and premiered at their Carnegie Hall performance in 2010, this work is also dedicated to the composer’s father, Dr. Samuel J. Hazo, a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame. Dr. Hazo’s poem “Home Are the Sailors” is incorporated in the middle of the piece. Rich in musical references and varied textures, this is a dramatic and rewarding work for mature ensembles. Richard L. Saucedo This intense and emotional work was commissioned by the Indiana Music Educators Association, and was premiered at the 2011 IMEA Convention with the composer conducting. Written as a gift to longtime friend of music education, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, the piece is basically lyrical in nature with beautiful lines and colors. A brief faster section, in the words of the composer, “describes that uncomfortable time when we are desperately trying to find ourselves.” The piece ends on a solemn yet reaffirming note, reminding us of the importance of guides and mentors along life’s pathway. Jay Bocook Dating from the 1600s, the folk song “O Waly, Waly” (commonly known as “The Water is Wide”) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also “Carolina” (South Carolina’s official song) is developed. Jay Bocook This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic-flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival! Samuel R. Hazo The stunning artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe is no more apparent than in her famous 1921 painting entitled Blue and Green Music. Fittingly commissioned by the Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (O’Keeffe’s birthplace), Samuel Hazo does an amazing job of portraying subtle as well as bold colors in musical terms. Based on a single theme that is manipulated and varied throughout, the piece progresses from delicate mallet percussion effects up to climactic impact points for the entire ensemble. O’Keeffe explained her idea that “music could be translated into something for the eye.” And Mr. Hazo succeeds wonderfully in translating it back into something for the ear! Michael Sweeney In this dynamic multi-style overture for band, Michael Sweeney opens with stark percussive hits, brass fanfares, and swirling woodwind effects. A fast tempo and long build follows, using non-traditional harmonies and overlapping layers of sound, climaxing with a majestic, soaring statement by the entire ensemble. The slower middle section features a solo flute accompanied by rich sonorities and counterlines. The fast tempo returns initiated by the percussion section and then recurring earlier themes as the piece drives to a satisfying finish. With variety and pacing, this is a perfect choice for contest or festival. Johnnie Vinson In the Shoals region of northwest Alabama, the Tennessee River is often referred to as “the singing river,” a term originating with the Yuchi tribe of Native Americans. Song for Hope

Michael Sweeney Written as a memorial for a middle school band student, this sensitive and moving work opens with a chorale played by off-stage brass. A flowing melody stated in the low register is then developed before leading to a brief fanfare-like affirmation. The Korean folk song “You and I” is briefly quoted before returning Michael Sweeney to the off-stage brass and calm closing passage. A beautifully scored lyric piece for band. (Extra players are not required for the off-stage parts.) Rossano Galante Written in a grand film scoring style, Rossano Galante’s Journey to the Lion’s Castle takes the listener on an exciting musical excursion of various moods and styles. The impressive opening strains feature woodwind flourishes and powerful brass lines. A graceful and majestic middle section offers a change of pace before the endrossano galante ing segment drives to a breathtaking finish. For mature bands, this could become a programming highlight! Rossano Galante Intensely descriptive from the very first note, Cry of the Last Unicorn portrays a fateful encounter of hunters tracking the “last unicorn.” The music is at times poignant and other times dramatic and as exciting as the chase it depicts. Sweeping themes and rich scoring help to make this a memorable work for the symphonic stage. Fire of Eternal Glory (Novorossiyek Chimes)
4
Dmitri Shostakovich/arr. James Curnow Although considered to be a small work in Shostakovich’s catalog, Fire of Eternal Glory was one of his best known works in the USSR. A recording of the piece, originally written for the war memorial in Novorossiyek, has been playing continuously at that location since its construction in 1960, possibly making it one of the most frequently played pieces of classical music in existence. James Curnow’s arrangement for young band begins with delicate sounds from the bells, and builds to a tremendous climax for full band. Eric Whitacre This loving and dreamlike work captures the undulating rhythm of a mother rocking her child to sleep. The piece was inspired by classic Rudyard Kipling: “Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. The moon, o’er the combers, looks downward to find us, At rest in the ERIC WHITACRE hollows that rustle between.” Magical! 7
Leonard Bernstein/arr. Jay Bocook The acclaimed 1954 film On the Waterfront starred Marlon Brando and garnered multiple Academy Awards, as well as a nomination for Bernstein’s poignant and evocative music (his only film score). Using music from the film, Bernstein created this 20-minute suite LEONARD BERNSTEIN which consists of six continuously flowing movements. Juxtaposing moments of tenderness with elements of cold savagery as depicted in the film, this is a monumental and distinctive addition to the symphonic repertoire. John Estacio/trans. Fraser Linklater Commissioned by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1998, this dynamic work combines “frantic” and “energy” to form the title, speaking volumes to the nature and verve of the character of the music. Following a heart-pounding opening, this brisk piece is comprised John Estacio of four short melodic ideas tossed from section to section. Enjoying acclaim and prominent performances in the symphonic arena, this work is authentically transcribed by Fraser Linklater and is certain to become an important addition to the repertoire for winds. Kathryn Salfelder Following the success of Kathryn’s Cathedrals (2009), the American Bandmasters Association commissioned her to create this new work for band. Premiered at the 2010 ABA National Convention, Crossing Parallels offers a creative tapestry of engaging sounds and textures as Kathryn Salfelder it combines elements of both Renaissance and Baroque musical gestures along with contemporary notions of set theory and harmony. The seemingly contradictory nature of the title is reflected in the overlapping and intertwining of thematic ideas vying for attention. Joseph Turrin Commissioned by the University of Wisconsin – River Falls in 1997 and revised for the Hartt School Wind Symphony in 2007, “Ritual” is the first movement of a three-movement work titled Soundings. However, this bold and dramatic work stands alone as an impressive Joseph TUrrin symphonic setting, emphasizing the percussion section throughout along with a strong rhythmic drive and tension-building sonorities. Ola Gjeilo This evocative work is a wind band version of the composer’s mass for choir and string orchestra entitled Sunrise. The piece is built around a five-note chorale theme, and the opening section features an overlapping fade-in/fadeout effect meant to give a sense of floating in space, as if surrounded by stars and planets. A stunning composition from an exciting new voice in the band world – Ola Gjeilo. Ola Gjeilo Meridian comes very much out of the composer’s love for ostinato, or groove-based, music. Other diverse influences include the World Music-infused jazz of Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, as well as the symphonies of Shostakovich. This exciting and creative work is written Ola Gjeilo with a consistent rhythmic drive throughout, and features a prominent role for piano. Elegy for Albinoni Master Level
15
Shelley Hanson Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) was a prolific Baroque-era composer whose works are now rarely performed. However, he was much admired by J.S. Bach who used examples of Albinoni’s music in his teaching, as well as using some of Albinoni’s themes as the basis for some Shelley Hanson of his own pieces. “Elegy for Albinoni” is a beautiful memorial piece in honor of this musical master, and uses a romantic tone to set the stage for a theme based on one of Albinoni’s violin sonatas. A rewarding work! A beautiful and lyrical middle theme creates a mesmerizing and calming effect before the Kenneth Fuchs opening theme and faster pace makes a return for the dramatic finish. Concisely scored with an intriguing variety of textures, this is an impressive work for contest or festival. Robert Jager Referring to the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, this suite of three appealing settings reflects on the origins and character of this state. The suite opens with the lighthearted 6/8 setting “Punxsutawny Phil.” Next is “Moravian Hymn Variants,” which is solemn and richsounding, but with a brief spirited middle variation. Robert Jager “Independence Hall” concludes this well-written work in a stately and majestic style. Alex Shapiro Composer Alex Shapiro’s piece Paper Cut is reminiscent of a movie soundtrack to which the musicians can imagine their own dramatic scene. The piece asks the performers to “play” paper like a percussion instrument – ripping, tearing, tapping and crumpling along with the electronic track even before they pick up their instruments to play along. A very creative and evocative work sure to stir the imagination of players and audience alike. Camille Saint-Saens/arr. Arthur Frackenpohl Composed in the style of a military “quickstep,” Pas Redoublé is a concert march reminiscent of the gallops by Offenbach and other 19 century composers. EMB (Editio Musica Budapest) Four Pictures
24
Árpád Balázs Known for his works for choir and also wind ensemble, Árpád Balázs (b.1937) composed Four Pictures combining both singing and playing. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic “Induló” (March), while the expansive second movement is entitled “Cantilena.” The third movement is the lively, but still lyrical “Arietta”, and the work concludes with “Játék” (Play) which features a mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other. A unique and rewarding work for young players. Folksong Suite No. 1 and No. 2 Frigyes Hidas Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem táncolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas’ mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.

by Claude T. Smith Claude Smith’s contemporary approach to teaching technique, tone and style is written in a variety of keys and meters and is divided into three sections: I. Scale Studies II. Etudes III. Chorale Studies. The etudes and chorales are in progressive order of difficulty so bands of all levels can find appropriate starting places and progress from there. It’s the perfect way to begin every rehearsal. $4.95 unless otherwise noted 20823010 Conductor Score ($12.95) 20823020 Flute/Piccolo 20823030 Oboe 20823040 Bassoon 20823050 B-flat Clarinet 1 20823060 B-flat Clarinet 2 20823070 B-flat Clarinet 35 20823080 E-flat Alto Clarinet 20823090 B-flat Bass Clarinet 20823100 E-flat Alto Sax 20823110 B-flat Tenor Sax 20823120 E-flat Baritone Sax 20823130 B-flat Trumpet 1 20823140 B-flat Trumpet 2 20823150 F Horn 20823160 Trombone 1 20823170 Trombone 2 20823180 Baritone TC 20823190 Baritone BC 20823200 Tuba 20823210 Percussion 20823220 Mallet Percussion 20823230 Timpani
