SHORT & EASY ANTHEMS This book offers a new and generous selection of works for all occasions and times of year – either for use as introits or communion motets - that require minimal rehearsal time. While a few of the pieces may be well-known, such as Richard Lloyd’s View me, Lord, there are many new works in this collection. All have been chosen with ease and speed of learning in mind. Some works such as Benjamin Britten’s Corpus Christi Carol and Rupert Jeffcoat’s ethereal Weigh my heart are for unison voices. Others, such as Alan Bullard’s Blest are the pure in heart call for reduced numbers of vocal parts, and many require only occasional simple four-part singing. Several anthems provide interesting substitutes for other more well-known works. Those looking for an alternative to Henry Walford Davies’ God be in my head will find two contrasting versions here by David Briggs and Herbert Howells. Peter Miller’s beautiful anthems Lord, I am not worthy to receive you and Draw near with faith can be used as an alternative to the Agnus Dei or as effective communion anthems in their own right. Heaven, by Andrew Wells, with its optional solo quartet, offers an easy yet dramatic way to use the space of the church. Some pieces provide useful anthems where there can appear to be a shortage of simpler works. James Davy’s And they shall beat their swords into ploughshares is the perfect introit for Rogation Sunday, and Arthur Hutchings’ infectiously boisterous God is gone up deserves to be better known as an Ascension Day anthem. Martin Baker’s Christus vincit is a triumphant plainsong setting suitable for the Feast of Christ the King. FULL CONTENTS: Adam lay ibounden – Andrew Cusworth Almighty God, which hast me brought – Thomas Ford And they shall beat their swords into ploughshares – James Davy Blessing – Ralph Allwood Blest are the pure in heart – Alan Bullard Christus vincit – Martin Baker Corpus Christi Carol - Benjamin Britten Cradle Song – Ashley Grote Crux fidelis – Matthew Owens Draw near with faith – Peter Miller Es ist nun aus mit meinem Leben – Johann Christoph Bach For the Fallen – David Terry God be in my head – David Briggs God be in my head – Herbert Howells God is gone up – Arthur Hutchings Hear my voice, O Lord – Rupert Jeffcoat Heaven – Andrew Wells I sing of a maiden – Lennox Berkeley In monte Oliveti – Anton Bruckner

THE TALLIS PSALTER The Tallis Psalter contains Tallis’ nine tunes set to metrical verses by Archbishop Matthew Parker published in around 1567. Many of the tunes have since been reworked as popular hymns. Ralph Vaughan Williams famously used the Third Tune as the basis for his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. This is the first complete edition of the Psalter, allowing, for the first time in centuries, a performance within the Anglican liturgy. The volume also features Tallis’ surviving English anthems, including popular works such as If ye love me and Hear the voice and prayer, and lesser-known miniatures such as A new commandment and Purge me, O Lord, the evening Dorian Service, and the Preces and Responses for five voices.
FULL CONTENTS: The First Tune (Psalm 1) The Second Tune (Psalm 68) The Third Tune (Psalm 2) The Fourth Tune (Psalm 95) The Fifth Tune (Psalm 42) The Sixth Tune (Psalm 5) The Seventh Tune (Psalm 52) The Eighth Tune (Psalm 67) Veni Creator (‘Ordinal’) Preces and Responses The Dorian Service
A new commandment Blessed are those that be undefiled Hear the voice and prayer If ye love me O Lord, give thy Holy Spirit O Lord, in thee is all my trust Out from the deep Purge me, O Lord Remember not, O Lord God Verily, verily, I say unto you HL 14042357 $14.95
THE GIBBONS HYMNAL The Gibbons Hymnal contains the 17 hymn tunes composed by Orlando Gibbons for George Wither’s The Hymnes and Songs of the Church (1623), many of which are still popular today. This is the first modern edition which incorporates Wither’s hymn texts beyond the first verses. Gibbons composed treble and bass lines for the hymns and editor David Skinner has constructed the inner voices to create a collection of pieces that can be performed either as hymns or as simple anthems. Also in this volume are Gibbons’ ten surviving full anthems.

SING, CHOIRS! Sing, Choirs!, edited by John Baird, is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church’s popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. Many of the works in Sing, Choirs! are presented in their original form, such as Bruckner’s Locus iste and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum. Others are arrangements, adaptations or longer pieces abridged to bring them into the scope of a useable anthem, including choral arrangements of Handel’s Largo, two settings of Ave Maria by Schubert and by Bach/Gounod and Franck’s Panis angelicus amongst many others. CONTENTS INCLUDE: Agnus Dei – John Baird Ave verum corpus – William Byrd Creation’s Hymn – Ludwig van Beethoven Drop, drop, slow tears (Song 46) – Orlando Gibbons God be in my head – Henry Walford Davies If ye love me – Thomas Tallis Lead me, Lord – Samuel Sebastian Wesley O God, thou art my God – Henry Purcell Thou visiteth the earth – Maurice Greene HL 14043105 $19.95
CLASSIC ANTHEMS The Novello Book of Classic Anthems brings together some of the finest sacred choruses ever written. All the pieces have been re-engraved and some, such as Haydn’s The heavens are telling and Brahms’s How lovely are thy dwellings have newly-arranged accompaniments specifically designed for the organ. The collection features miniature gems, including Edward Elgar’s Ave verum corpus, Henry Purcell’s Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts, and established choral favourites such as Henry Balfour Gardiner’s Evening Hymn. It also covers a number of dramatic extended anthems, suitable for both church choirs and choral societies, such as Edward Naylor’s Vox dicentis: clama and Wesley’s Ascribe unto the Lord. CONTENTS INCLUDE: Blessed be the God and Father – Samuel Sebastian Wesley Bring us, O Lord God – William Harris Hear my prayer, O Lord – Henry Purcell I saw the Lord – John Stainer Rejoice in the Lord alway – George Rathbone Save us, O Lord – Edward Bairstow HL 14043062 $19.95

SERGEI RACHMANINOFF RACHMANINOFF’S music for the All-Night Vigil service – long known inaccurately as his ‘Vespers’ – is a masterpiece in its own right. It draws on centuries-old Orthodox chant and the performance tradition of Russian folk music, and embodies the ideal of Russian church music championed by a group of Moscow musicians of the time. In this All-Night Vigil the great composer-pianist-conductor has allied his own imagination, skill and experience with the expertise built up at the Synodal School of Church Music – not least by its choir, which gave the first performances at several Moscow concerts. This edition has been carefully prepared to present Rachmaninoff’s music in a clear and easily readable format, and also offers a new transliteration of the Church Slavonic text. For the first time an audio pronunciation guide is provided online, which will prove indispensable for choirs wishing to perform this most beautiful of masterpieces. STUART CAMPBELL has contributed articles on Russian music to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (second edition) and Die neue MGG. Cambridge University Press published two volumes of his anthology of criticism entitled Russians on Russian Music. He is a tutor for the adult-education units of the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and joint musical director (with Svetlana Zvereva) of the chamber choir Russkaya Cappella. HL 14043555 $23.95
JUDITH WEIR JUDITH WEIR’S choral music is approachable and succinct, imbued with the influence of her interest in theatre and folklore and texts. Illuminare, Jerusalem, Missa del Cid, Vertue and a blue true dream of sky are highlights. In 2014 Weir was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music. She is also Associate Composer with the BBC Singers. JOHN TAVENER (1944-2013) JOHN TAVENER first came to public attention in 1968 when his avantgarde oratorio The Whale was premiered at the inaugural concert of the London Sinfonietta. As the years progressed his music became increasingly spiritual in conception, contemplative in its idiom, and popular with audiences worldwide. In 1977 he joined the Orthodox Church which was a major inspiration on his work for the following two decades. From the late 1990s he sought inspiration from alternative sources, pursuing his interest in a universalist philosophy which embraces all the great religious traditions: Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the spirituality of the American Indians. Works such as The Lamb, Funeral Ikos and the all-night vigil The Veil of the Temple are iconic works in the contemporary repertoire. Tavener passed away in November 2013. His last works were inspired by Scottish folk songs, Shakespeare, George Herbert and Krishna. He also completed a setting of the Missa Brevis and Preces and Responses.
NEW TAVENER PUBLICATIONS This collection for SATB choir presents some of John Tavener’s most popular works from his outstandingly varied and extensive catalogue for choir. These include beautiful miniatures and radiant anthems which trace a line over the years from the exquisite simplicity of his setting of William Blake’s The Lamb to the monumental Veil of the Temple and beyond. The Lamb Nunc dimittis (2010) O that we were there! Rocking Song for Athene Today the Virgin What God is, we do not know

NICO MUHLY NICO MUHLY (b. 1981) calls choral music his first love, stating, “I still return to the emotional landscapes of Byrd, Tallis, Gibbons, Howells and Britten as a sort of home base for all of the music I write. That love has led him to create a rich and varied catalogue, including secular and sacred music performed and recorded by choral ensembles such as the Los Angeles Master Chorale, The Choir of St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Cantus, and The Choirs of Clare and St John’s Colleges, Cambridge, among others. From large ensemble works (Like as the hart, Expecting the Main Things from You) to chamber works (How Soon, A New Song, My Days), Muhly’s passion for choral music comes through in his lush, complex works that are in demand by amateur and professional ensembles throughout the world.
