Specialist’s Insights The single-owner collection is always an exciting element of any auction, and occasionally, though rarely now, constitutes an entire sale. As well as presenting items that are largely fresh to the market and with terrific provenance, what a discreet collection provides is a unique insight into the mind and taste of an individual - the collector. Some are wildly diverse, demonstrating a love of objects regardless of age, material or style that the collector simply finds beautiful in their own right. Some are very neatly specific to a period, a material, or even a subcategory of material. In the present auction we have no fewer than three significant collections ranging from ten to fifty or more objects. The John Laycock collection (lots 1 to 65) is one of diversity in period and style. Laycock was a prominent lawyer with a military background who settled in Singapore in the post-war years and established his own legal practice. In addition to collecting orchids around South East Asia, he also collected Chinese art, much of which was purchased in Hong Kong while on business excursions during the 1950s and 60s. Objects range from neolithic jade through Shang Dynasty bronze, Ming Dynasty porcelain and Qing Dynasty snuff bottles with

4

much more besides. The highlight of this collection, for me, is a small Shang Dynasty jade cong (lot 48) - a ritualistic object of uncertain use which is thought to represent the Earth when found in burial ceremonies, a counterpoint to the bi disc which represents the heavens. It is such an unassuming piece but carries with it incredible mystery as well as the inherent beauty of the stone and its great age. Some collections are pure investments, designed to accrue value over time which, like any investment, comes with a frisson of excitement in the element of gambling with the market. By far the best way to invest, though, is to purchase objects that you can enjoy looking at in the meantime and as a valuer encountering such collections, I am often struck by the indomitable taste of the collector, driven by a love of the techniques and artistry in the works they acquire. The property of a gentleman, a small but

select group of Chinese cloisonne and enamel (lots 191 to 197) demonstrates this very well. The art of cloisonne was applied to a variety of decorative objects but here the collector has clearly focused on animal figures. In addition to the beauty of the material, the result of a highly labour intensive process, the objects have superb charm and character. A third collection, this time the property of a lady, is a carefully curated gathering of embroidered silk panels (lots 220 to 234). Dating primarily to the late Qing Dynasty the works are a combination of garment fragments and screen panels, all lovingly framed and glazed to present them in the best way; fully laid out in all their glory. The craftsmanship in these works is exquisite, particularly in the 19th Century screen panel filled to bursting with all manner of birds (lot 230). One of the most impressive pieces in the collection, though, is a very large inscribed fragment (lot 229), believed to be the pelmet for a bed, worked with delightful birds and flowers as well as ‘double joy’ symbols indicating that it was likely a marriage gift. We trust these and other objects in our auction excite and inspire the collectors who will be the next custodians of them. We look forward to welcoming you to the Halls saleroom.

The

John Laycock Collection

The

John Laycock Collection John Laycock (1887-1960) was born in England, and was established as a solicitor in London in 1907. He served with distinction during the Great War, rising to the position of Major, and was awarded the Military Cross (1914-1918). In 1920, Laycock arrived in Singapore to join the legal practice of Braddell Brothers and subsequently started his own law firm, Laycock and Ong. He married Alice, a Chinese Singaporean, and they subsequently adopted five local children. He became actively involved in Singapore politics, was elected to Singapore’s Legislative Council and was instrumental in founding the Singapore Progressive Party which played a large part in the country obtaining self governance.

6

He was also a renowned horticulturalist, collecting orchid specimens from the jungles of Malaya and beyond. This collection, and his hybridization of orchids, laid the foundation for the development of the orchid export industry in Singapore. His collection of Chinese art was mainly purchased from dealers on his business trips to Hong Kong between 1925 and 1955, in particular from T. Y. King & Sons. When the Japanese invaded Singapore in 1942 the family buried the collection in the garden before escaping to India and fortunately a number of pieces escaped the war unscathed.

Late Qing Dynasty Each modelled as a caprisoned horse, the head lowered and right front hoof raised, set on rectangular bases, one glazed in yellow and dark ochre, the other turquoise, blue and dark ochre. 37cm long PROVENANCE: A gift from actress Ingrid Bergman to her makeup artist John O’Gorman, thence by descent to the vendor.

FOOTNOTE: John O’Gorman (1911-1977) was a British makeup artist for the motion picture industry, a career which began in 1947 with Mine Own Executioner starring Dulcie Gray. Among no fewer than 69 film credits O’Gorman worked on the first James Bond picture Dr. No (1962) with Ursula Andress as well as Charade (1963) with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant and The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964) with Ingrid Bergman. Among other stars of the screen to receive the O’Gorman touch were Sophia Loren, Peter Sellers, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles. Such did his reputation become as an expert in his field that actresses like Ingrid Bergman, Ursula Andress and Raquel Welch specifically requested him to do their makeup on shoots. It was during the filming of The Yellow Rolls Royce with Ingrid Bergman on location in Rome that O’Gorman spotted a pair of Chinese glazed stoneware horses in an antique shop. Though he admired them greatly they were just beyond his means. He mentioned them in passing to Bergman while continuing to work but thought no more about them until the shoot wrapped and everyone was leaving. Ingrid Bergman took O’Gorman to one side and said that there was a crate waiting for him with a present inside. On opening the crate he was delighted to discover the Chinese horses he had so wanted. The horses remained in the family and were passed down to his son and daughter on his death in 1977. Reunited for this auction, Halls is pleased to offer the Bergman -O’Gorman horses. £2500 - £3500

IMPORTANT BIDDER NOTICES Certain objects in this catalogue are subject to CITES regulations and bidders are advised to apprise themselves of UK legislation as well as that outside the UK. Ivory objects worked before 1947 are included in this auction which will require an export license if being moved outside the UK. Some jurisdictions, such as the United States, have strict regulations on ivory imports and bidders are advised to ensure they are aware of any such restrictions before bidding. Â All types of rosewood (Dalbergia genus) are controlled by CITES and also require an export license. For further details visit the UK CITES regulator at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/cites-imports-and-exports Although every effort is made to note damage and restoration, the absence of such information does not imply that the lot is free from defects. Detailed condition reports and email images can be obtained on request until 4.00pm the day prior to the sale.
