SPECIALIST INSIGHT It is increasingly unusual to encounter a listed country house with its contents, more or less untouched for one hundred years and yet this is the case with the vast majority of the pieces presented in this auction consigned for sale by the executors of this estate. This is verified by poring over an old insurance valuation, carried out by Pawsey and Payne, Saint James’s, London, in August 1965, with the majority of the furnishings having remained in the same rooms since that date. The residual works were sold in our antique and interiors sale on the 15th of July, with the highlight being a Chamberlain’s of Worcester porcelain tray, painted with Hawkstone Hall, that made a hammer price of £1,700, more than the buyer had recently paid for its pair through the specialist trade. Surprisingly, a Victorian teak campaign chest, missing half a drawer front and with two chunks missing from each side made a staggering £800. More than would have been expected for an equivalent example in good condition. By family repute the beneficiaries of this estate have given the provenance of many items to a local country house sale in the 1920s or 1930s and, in fact, in the insurance valuation mentioned above there are numerous footnotes to a ‘1929 Collection’. Sadly, it is not known to precisely which family this refers, let alone to which estate. The most interesting and salient items from this house sale are the two 18th century perspectives of Shrewsbury (lots 53 and 54) but there is an interesting array of pieces from disparate categories, from a collection of 18th and 19th

century oak furniture, where there is an early-mid 18th century north Wales dresser, with unusual, carved scrolls (lot 28), to several 19th century Fijian throwing clubs (lots 1 and 2). Or, from a pair of 19th century, elephant-handled glass vases, attributed to Harrach (lot 13) to a collectable 1710 edition medical book by John Greenfield, A Treatise of Stone and Gravel (lot 20). In terms of price too, there is a broad range to cater for different pockets. At one end of the scale a 4.1 carat diamond ring at £6,000-9,000 to an affordable £50£80 for a 19th century brass doorstop. Unsurprisingly there are vestiges of bygone eras, including a Victorian maple cigar box (lot 43) and a gold cigarette case (lot 78), from the more recent past to a 19th century rushnip (lot 4), a set of Victorian library steps (lot 47) and a sgabella form pair of hall chairs (lot 45) from the more distant past. One unifying theme is that all would still grace any home. Another is that given there is something of interest for most people all will find their way into a welcoming and appreciative arena.

ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN BOWEN (DIED 1773), NORTH EAST PROSPECT OF SHREWSBURY

Note: John Bowen was the son of an artist and well regarded for his architectural accuracy, exemplified by this painting and a number of his other works in Shrewsbury Museum's collection. It is worth noting that Saint Julian's (with a tower), Saint Mary's and Saint Alkmund's Church (from left to right in the centre) are all shown as one would expect of an 18th century depiction, but more interestingly, Old Saint Chads Church is shown to the left of this group, before its tower collapsed on 8th July 1788. Given the new English Bridge, that was built from 1769-1774, is not evident and nor are the changes to the Abbey (on the far left), which lost its southern aspect following Thomas Telford's London Road construction, this depiction must pre-date 1769, but as yet, a more precise date has yet to be ascertained for this aspect. Label verso: 'Loaned by Rev J.T.R..., Baschurch vicarage'. Rev J.T. Ryder was vicar of Baschurch from 1883-1912 We are grateful to Shrewsbury Museum for their assistance and help in cataloguing this lot £10,000 - £15,000

ENGLISH SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY, SOUTHERN PROSPECT OF SHREWSBURY

Note: This Southern prospect of Shrewsbury is a Capriccio and a good contrast to the larger counterpart, for the unknown artist has moved the old English Bridge and Gatehouse around the river, Saint Julian's Church is incorrectly positioned and the time that this work depicts, where the defensive walls are intact, there should also have been many wall towers present. Given the walls were gradually demolished throughout the 18th century and all the architectural inconsistencies, it is difficult to date this depiction, but it was probably painted in the 18th century as an interpretation of an earlier imaginary state, a fanciful image of how Shrewsbury might have looked. Interestingly, as romantic as this aspect is, it does include the dingle, a pond before the trees, which curiously and uncharacteristically John Bowen used to omit. We are grateful to Shrewsbury Museum for their assistance and help in cataloguing this lot £5,000 - £8,000

A RARE CAUGHLEY DESSERT PLATE

circa 1788-93 painted in a light, bright underglaze blue with 'Bright Landscapes 3', combined with an elaborate Gold Star and Spangles gilded border, central panel painted with a monk standing before a ruined building, impressed 'Salopian', 23cm wide Provenance: Ex. Gittins and CB Collection. Featured in Caughley Bicentenary Exhibition, no, 525 and previously sold by Klaber & Klaber Notes: By the release of Godden's book on Caughley and Worcester porcelains, the author knew of only six pieces in this pattern. It was Gaye Blake Roberts who first shed significant light on these designs in 1974 within an English Ceramic Circle Transaction paper in which it was reported that the source of several scenes from a Bright Landscapes dessert service were taken from Paul Sandby's Virtouosis' Museum published in 1778. The Gold Star Border and Spangles dessert service was first illustrated in 1969 by Godden. Research has shown that there are at least two dessert services with this gilt design £400 - £600

with bud form finials and fluted sides, bases impressed 'Coade Lambeth 1794', 63cm high, with a pair of rams head and swag moulded pedestals, 53cm high, restorations s/d Provenance: Property of a Titled Estate Note: This pair of Coade urns were made by the company whose founder and owner was Eleanor Coade, an highly successful entrepreneur with a flair for commerce. Having run her own drapery business in the 1760s she bought an artificial stone factory in 1770 and turned it into a world-renowned company, producing architectural features and garden ornaments, supplying none other than the Royal Family, for Buckingham Palace, many architects of the time including James Wyatt, John Soane and John Nash (leading lights of the Neoclassical movement) and many wealthy patrons overseas. These urns are in fact finials and similar examples can be seen on her home, Belmont House, in Lyme Regis (see plate opposite), where they can be seen on the parapet walls of the roof, as was the fashion on Palladian style manors and villas of the day. These examples are stamped ‘Coade Lambeth, 1794’ and given the name of her company changed in 1799 (to Coade & Sealy) these urns can be given a pretty accurate date of manufacture £7,000 - £10,000

Note: The Bentley T was the Bentley version of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, a total of 1868 being produced 1966-1970, the majority 4-door saloons and only 114 of them 2-door coupes, of which 1 was bodied by Pininfarina, 15 by James Young and 98, as this car, by in-house coachbuilders Mulliner Park Ward. When launched, the more understated luxury Bentley T saloon’s pre-tax ‘list price’ of £5,375 undercut the equivalent Rolls-Royce by £50, while the price charged for a more sporting Bentley coupe was some 50% greater than that of the standard saloon. The Bentley differed from its Rolls-Royce sibling by having a more rounded grille, while the badging on the wheel covers, boot lid and gauges naturally featured Bentley motifs rather than the Rolls-Royce logo. Although some of the panels on a Bentley coupe were shared with the standard 4-door saloons, their 2-door body-shells featured a distinctive dipping upper wing with parallel crease, and revised, more rounded rear bodywork. One of only 89 Bentley badged MPW coupes in right-hand drive, this statistically rare 1970 T Series 2-door 8237 was registered BLC 750H, the registration that has remained on the car to this day (confirmed in a current V5C registration document), when sold new 8 April 1970 by supplying London West End Bentley dealers Jack Barclay Ltd (their plate in door aperture) to first owner Ruth Matilda Brown of Staplefield, near Haywards Heath. After 21 years in her care, the Bentley was purchased 06 September 1991 by second owner Peter M Afia of Hatton Grange Shifnal, before being auctioned nine years later in a Halls Fine Art sale 30 April 1999 with 83,000 mileage. The original invoice for the sale is the history file along with an impressive run of tax discs from 1971 to 1999. Since acquisition by our Shrewsbury client however, who was therefore only the third owner, the 50 year old Bentley has only been driven a further 2,285 miles in just over 20 years (an expired tax disc from 2011 is still on the screen), having been mainly preserved in the dry sanctuary of a damp-free residential garage. Previously repainted bodywork is clean and the chrome shines today. Patinated seat leather, which may be original, although lightly age-cracked in the front, is still soft, and the dashboard wood and door top capping are all present and correct. While after half a century, the engine bay presentation is fair for the year. Although well stored and cosmetically tidy, the battery has been flat for some time however and the car has not been maintained or serviced recently. It is therefore being sold as seen and as a ‘Non-Runner’. The fullest professional recommissioning of all electrical and hydraulic systems would therefore be advised and the potential renewal of tyres, brake and steering components and an MOT test pass prudent before the car is driven on the public road. This still stylish Bentley, which is categorised by the DVLA as a ‘Historic Vehicle’ and eligible for free road tax, has nonetheless been most realistically estimated.

CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. Definitions. In these Conditions Halls Holdings Limited act only as auctioneers and agents for the seller and the representative of Halls Holdings Limited conducting the auction is called the “Auctioneer”. 2. General. Whilst Halls Holdings Limited make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogues and the description of any lot:(a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot or lots sold by the seller with all faults, imperfections and errors of description. (b) Halls Holdings Limited do not accept responsibility for the authenticity, attribution, genuineness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot unless they have been instructed in writing by the seller to so certify, and in such case the auctioneers do so as agents of the seller and are not themselves responsible for such claims. (c)All statements whether printed in the catalogue or made orally as to any of the matters set out in (b) above are statements of opinion only and are not to be taken as being or implying any warranties or representations of fact by Halls Holdings Limited unless they have been instructed in writing by the seller to so certify. (d) Any claim under any Statute must be received in writing by the Auctioneers within ten days of the day of the sale. 3. The Auction. (a) The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots or withdraw any lot or lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving any reason or without previous notice. Rescission. Notwithstanding any other terms of these Conditions, if within fourteen days after the sale Halls Holdings Limited have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within twenty-one days after such notification the buyer returns the same to Halls Holdings Limited in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies Halls Holdings Limited that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. The seller and the buyer agree to be bound by Halls Holdings Limited’s decision 5. Default. Halls Holdings Limited disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the seller because they act as agents for the seller only and therefore do not pay out to the seller until payment is received from the buyer. Instructions given by telephone are accepted at the sender’s risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith. 6. In the event of a sale by private treaty both the seller and the buyer agree to be bound by the general and any Special Conditions of Sale. 7. Third Party Liability. Every person on Halls Holdings Limited’s premises at any time shall be deemed to be there at his own risk. He shall have no claim against Halls Holdings Limited in respect of any accident which may occur or injury, damage or loss howsoever caused, save in so far as the injury, damage or loss shall be caused by the direct negligence of Halls Holdings Limited’s employees

CONDITIONS OF SALE APPLICABLE TO BUYERS 8. Inspection. Opportunity is given for inspection and each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding by inspection or otherwise to all the Sale Conditions, the physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired or restored. 9. Property and Risk. The legal title in a lot shall not pass to the buyer until the lot(s) has been paid for in full and the Auctioneers shall be entitled to a lien on any lot sold until the purchase price (as defined in 10 below) is paid in full but each lot is at the sole risk of the buyer from the fall of the hammer. Each buyer shall forthwith give his full names and permanent address and if called upon to do so by the Auctioneer shall forthwith pay Halls Holdings Limited such proportion of the purchase price as the Auctioneer may require. If the buyer fails to do so, the lot may at the auctioneer’s sole direction be put up again and re-sold. 10.Every bidder shall be deemed to act as principal unless there is in force a written acknowledgement by Halls Holdings Limited that he acts as agent on behalf of a named principal. 11. Removal of goods. (a)No purchase shall be claimed or removed until the sale has been concluded. All lots shall be paid for and removed at the buyer’s risk and expense by the end of the second working day after the sale, failing which the Auctioneer shall not be responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, and all lots not so removed shall remain at the risk of the buyer and subject to a warehousing charge. If they are not paid for and removed within seven days of the sale the Auctioneer may re-sell them by auction or privately without notice to the buyer. Any liability which there may be on the part of the Auctioneer in respect of any loss shall be restricted to a maximum of the price paid by the buyer of the lot. (b) In the event of any failure of the buyer to comply with any of the above conditions the damages recoverable by the seller or the Auctioneers from the defaulter shall include any loss arising on any re-sale of the lots, together with the charges and expenses in respect of both sales, and together with interest at 2% above Handelsbanken Base Rate upon the price of any lot which has not been paid for within forty-eight hours of the sale, and any money deposited in part payment shall be held by the Auctioneers on account of any liability of the defaulter to them or to the seller. We accept cash up to €10,000, debit cards, bank transfers and personal cheques. We apologise we do not accept credit cards. Cheques drawn by third parties, whether in the auctioneer’s favour or requiring endorsement, cannot be accepted. 12. Purchase Price. The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium at the stated rates on the hammer price of 20%. under the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme operated by HM Customs & Excise, the premium does attract VAT as an addition to the stated premium rate. 13. Commission to Bid. Halls Holdings Limited will execute bids on behalf of intending buyers unable to attend the sale at no charge. Halls Holdings Limited undertake to purchase lots as cheaply as allowed by other bids and reserves. Bids must be submitted in writing and whilst every care is taken in carrying out instructions Halls Holdings Limited cannot be held responsible for errors or omissions made in carrying out such bids. 14. Lots on which Value Added Tax is payable on or included in the hammer price are indicated in the catalogue or description sheet with a sign. VAT is payable on or included in the hammer price of such lots at the rates prevailing on the day of the auction.


CONDITIONS OF SALE APPLICABLE TO SELLERS 15. The seller authorises Halls Holdings Limited to deduct commission at the published rate and to retain the buyer’s premium of 20% plus VAT. The seller agrees to pay all special advertising charges and illustration charges (see 24) insomuch that they are reasonable. Scale of Commission - Halls Business tariff card available at all Halls offices and salerooms on request. 16. Value Added Tax. A seller who sends for sale by auction any chattel(s) which is an asset of his business must disclose to the Auctioneer whether or not he is a registered person for Value Added Tax purposes and, if so, his registered number and whether or not he intends to operate the Dealer Margin Scheme covering works of art, etc. This information must be supplied to the Auctioneer on or prior to delivery of the goods. 17. Instructions. All goods delivered to the Auctioneers’ premises will be deemed to be delivered for Sale by Auction and will be catalogued and sold accordingly unless special instructions are recorded on the receipt. 18. Reserves. Halls Holdings Limited will be pleased to advise on suitable protective reserves but if no reserves have been received prior to the day of the Sale, the lot will be sold without reserve or at the discretion of the Auctioneer. Reserves must be confirmed in writing or notified on the receipt at the time of delivery. 19. Indemnity. Vendors shall indemnify Halls Holding Ltd against any claims in connection with goods sold by Halls on the vendor’s behalf. 20. Collections. The Auctioneers do not themselves undertake the collection of goods but acting expressly as Agents, they will if required, instruct or recommend a carrier on the vendor’s behalf for which there will be a charge. 21. Withdrawals. Where a seller cancels instructions for sale, or where a lot is withdrawn for any reason other than misattribution or authenticity, Halls Holdings Limited reserves the right to charge a fee equal to 10% plus VAT of the reserve price of the lot, or where no reserve has been fixed, Halls’ lower estimate of the item(s) withdrawn, together with any expenses incurred in relation to the item(s) withdrawn. 22. Insurance. Halls Fine Art are not regulated by the FSA for the provision of insurance to its clients. However, Halls Holdings Limited, for its own protection insures property consigned to it at bottom pre sale estimate, unless the item has been sold, in which instance property is insured at the hammer price for loss, occasioned as a result of theft, fire or negligence whilst in their custody or control. 23. Warranty of Title. The seller warrants to Halls Holdings Limited and to the buyer that he is the true owner of the property or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims. 24. Photography. Vendors give Halls Holdings Limited the right to photograph and illustrate and promote any lot placed with them for sale and to use such photographs and illustrations at any time at their discretion, whether or not in connection with the auction. 25. Electrical and Mechanical goods. The seller and consignor of

electrical or mechanical goods warrants and undertakes to Halls Holdings Limited that on the date received by Halls that the same are safe if reasonably used for the purpose for which they were designed and free from any defect not obvious on external inspection which could prove dangerous to human life or health, and will indemnify Halls its servants and agents against any loss or damage suffered by any breach of the above warranty. 26. Agency. The Auctioneers act throughout as Agents only and are not responsible for any default by the buyer. Halls Holdings Limited disclaim liability for paying the vendor until they have received settlement from the purchaser. 27. Warehousing. The Auctioneers exempt themselves from any liability to goods delivered to their salerooms without sufficient sale instructions,and reserve the right to make a warehousing charge in this respect. A similar warehousing charge will be applicable for goods left on their premises after they have requested the vendor to remove them. 28. Unsold goods. unsold goods must be collected if they are not to be re-offered within 14 days following receipt of any after sale advice slip. Halls Holdings Limited reserve the right to sell by auction on behalf of the vendor without reserve any items after this period. 29. Important Notice. Any monies held on your behalf will be held in a Clients Bank Account at the Handelsbanken, Shrewsbury and will be protected by the FSA. Furthermore for your protection, Halls adhere to the Clients Monies rules of the RICS. Any incidental interest earned on such monies will be retained by Halls as part of their terms of engagements, and by instructing Halls to act on your behalf, you are agreeing to and endorsing that course of action. RICS operates a Clients’ Money Protection Scheme (CMPS). Halls’ Buyer’s Premium is 20% plus VAT for the first £500,000 and 12% above £500,000 per lot Can I ask questions about lots before the auction? You can ask for further details about any lots in our sales up until 4.00pm the day prior to the sale and this is especially important if you cannot attend the view. We don’t detail condition in our catalogue descriptions and so recommend asking for a condition report and additional images. Our reports provide a general guide to the condition of a lot but are not a forensic examination and so a physical inspection by you or an appointed agent is ideal.
