HALIMA cassell
Halima Cassell was born in Kashmir, Pakistan and grew up in the north-west of England, now living in Shropshire. A fusion of cultural environments has shaped her identity and underpins her practice. Her work is characterised by the interaction of bold, simple forms overlaid with intricate carved surfaces. The definite lines and dramatic angles stem from Halima’s fascination of combining strong geometric elements with recurrent patterns and architectural principles. Geometry is the starting point for Halima’s designs and she manipulates this to create illusions of movement and enhance the interplay of light and shadow. This approach provides her with the tools to create the compelling drama and playful dynamism that characterises her work. Halima’s work engages the viewer, inviting further exploration. Clay was her first love and her work has naturally evolved to include marble, wood, concrete, bronze and glass, each offering different challenges of mutability and scale. Halima’s work has won numerous awards and is held in public and private collections worldwide.

Augustus john Augustus John (1878-1961) was a Welsh painter and etcher from Tenby, an important post-impressionist painter celebrated for his portrait paintings and his technique in sketching oil directly onto the canvas. He studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks, winning the Slade Prize before going on to study further in Paris. He lived a very unorthodox and liberal life, fathering dozens of children and roaming the country almost nomadically with his wife, mistress and their families. John was a highly successful artist, elected RA in 1928, serving as trustee of the Tate 19331941, President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters 1948-1953, given Order of Merit by King George VI in 1942 and one of the founders of the New English Art Club. During the First World War he served as a war artist with the Canadian forces which seems to have served as a turning point in his painting; John’s early work was predominantly drawings and etchings, but he later became famous for his portraits, as he had an almost psychological insight in his expression, a certain stark truthfulness in his representation of the sitter. By the 1920s Augustus John was the leading portrait painter in Britain, painting many famous persons including Thomas Hardy and Dylan Thomas, however his most critically recognised pieces are those representing members of his own family.

JOHN knapp-fisher John Knapp-Fisher (1931-2015) was a British post-war artist who is heavily associated with Pembrokeshire. He began his career in Graphic and exhibition design before becoming a full time artist in 1960. He is best known for his dark, dramatic watercolour paintings and his muted colour palette, often opting for earthy colours with simple dabs of primary as they emerge from the dark wash. Knapp-Fisher favoured subjects such as trees, bogs, hedgerows and the undergrowth over flowers, and was a fervent believer in painting en plein, often seeking his inspiration in his beloved Pembrokeshire. Although he did paint in oil, the majority of his work was created in his preferred medium of watercolour, and he is known for his characteristic letter-box shape paintings. He had a life-long love for the sea, building and sailing his own boats, even spending some years living upon one of his crafts, with seascapes and paintings of his daily catch becoming regular features within his artwork. Knapp-Fisher was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1992 and has a strong following particularly across the UK and South Africa.
