It’s hard to believe that another Summer is turning to Fall, but this change in season also brings some exciting changes to the library. In addition to our ongoing construction work to make our libraries even better, we are beginning to bring back in-person programs and events along with our virtual options. Look for our second annual Books Build Bridges community read events coming up in September and October, with fantastic opportunities to connect both in-person and virtually to best-selling authors telling stories of immigrant experiences. Sharing our stories is an important part of connecting to one another and to our community, so don’t miss your opportunity to participate with our Fall Ignite Maker in Residence, musician Eric Salazar, and his community album project. Finally, check out our Back to School Resource Guide included in this issue, and don’t forget that your library card is your most important school supply!

Fishers and Nobles
The library is preparing for the future by focusing on improving access and expanding possibilities in the use of indoor and outdoor spaces. When completed, Fishers and Noblesville residents will enjoy more pedestrian-friendly access and gathering spaces, additional parking, improved traffic flow, plus more experiential learning opportunities.
Planning a visit? If you have visited or driven by our Fishers and Noblesville libraries lately, you have noticed the initial renovation work required to maintain our buildings into the future and improve access for all. Our libraries will remain open during regular hours throughout the construction unless posted differently on our web page here or our lobby doors.
The Noblesville Library The Noblesville library renovation will focus on improved traffic flow and expanded parking, increasing access to green spaces, creating outdoor amenities for all ages plus an updated front façade. We are expanding our Indiana Room with more experiential learning opportunities, and improving second-floor access. Currently the North parking lot is under construction. It is anticipated that the reconfigured north parking lot will reopen in fall 2021, and work will begin on our front entrance and south parking lot.
The Fishers Library The Fishers library renovation will focus on more pedestrian-friendly access and gathering spaces, improved traffic flow and expanded parking, integration of the south entrance with the Nickel Plate trail, redesigning the north entrance to become the new main entrance, and expanding the north side parking. Currently the North and East parking lots are under construction. Library and Ignite Studio visitors can park in the library’s South lot or can find additional parking throughout the Nickel Plate District. Discover Guide

Ignite
An arts-inspired makerspace in the lower level of the Fishers Library.
Fall 2021 Maker-in-Residence:
Eric Salazar
Eric Salazar joins Ignite Studio as our Maker-inResidence September-December 2021. Salazar pioneers the New Classical genre. He takes his classical training and fuses together modern electronics with classical instruments, blending ancient styles with current trends. He teaches, performs, composes, records, leads workshops, and presents lectures. We caught up with Eric to learn more about his artistry: Q: A:
What instruments do you play? I primarily play clarinet and bass clarinet. Although, I do know how to play piano and can generally make a sound on any instrument, I only consider myself to be proficient in instruments of the clarinet family.
Q: A:
How did you get into composing and recording music? I think my path into composing music all began with a love for improvisation. Since I could make a sound on the instrument, I’ve always been improvising different melodies and rhythms. In my formal education, I often got some dirty looks from my peers for “messing around” instead of warming up properly. That messing around was my way of finding my voice as an artist.
Q: A:
Who are your musical heroes? I could listen to Johnny Cash all day, every day. I just find his storytelling to be so compelling, even though the musical style is vastly different from my own style. I’m [also] inspired by the people around me. So in that sense my biggest heroes are my colleagues at Forward Motion, the ensemble that I helped found in Indianapolis. They simultaneously support my artistry and development while pushing me to be the best musician I can be.
Q: A:
What musical/professional accomplishment are you most proud of? I’m still technically in the early stages of my career, but I’ve already released albums through record labels, performed at large venues for large crowds, and gotten some pretty awesome commissions to compose music. By far though, my proudest moments have been with my ensemble Forward Motion. We perform regularly, commission and premiere new works, and even produce studio recordings.
Q: A:
What kinds of things will you be doing during your residency in Ignite? I’m really excited to share what I know about audio engineering, composing, and the music business. By far the most ambitious and exciting project that I have this year is the creation of the community album that I will be doing at Ignite. I’m going to be recording members of the community responding to the question: “What ignites your passion?” Then, I’ll be setting those verbal responses to music to tell a collective community story about passion.
