Member Spotlight

The DeSimone’s purchased their home on Canterbury Lane in late 2020, packed up their home in Far Hills, New Jersey and arrived in Hampton Hall in April 2021. They grew up in and spent most of their careers in New Jersey and New York.

High school sweethearts, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April of this year. (Dawn still claims she was a child bride gradually reducing her admitted age on their wedding day… it currently rests at 7 years old.) After 53 years together, Dawn is still holding on to the belief that Richard has some potential. “We’ll see!” is the usual response from their friends. They lived in Manhattan for the first 10 years of their marriage. To save money, took advantage of every free activity available, which included concerts in Central Park

with Luciano Pavarotti, Diana Ross, and the NY Philharmonic. The New York City scene was a foodie haven. “That’s where I began my fondness for cooking and entertaining,” says Dawn.

THEY CREATED A NON-PROFIT FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT PRIVATE SCHOOLS THAT FOCUSED ON SPECIAL NEEDS AND UNDERPRIVILEGED STUDENTS.

During her career, Dawn worked on the client side at Scholastic Magazine, Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics and managed and supervised accounts like Elizabeth Arden, Tiffany, IBM, The New Yorker Magazine, Hennessy and others, on the agency side. She also ran the advertising department at one of the businesses founded by Richard,

“We never thought we would find such a welcoming community as we have in Hampton Hall Club.”

Planet Technology.

Once their son was born, Dawn and Richard moved back to NJ, and worked together while Richard grew his businesses. Several of the worldwide headquarters were conveniently located in the basement. Encouraged by her serial entrepreneur husband, in 1998, Dawn created LD Resource Group, a consulting business designed to help college capable students with learning disabilities find the colleges and post-secondary educational options with the most appropriate accommodations to suit their learning styles.

If you ask Richard about his career, his standard answer is that he’s not sure what he’ll do when he grows up. A life-long entrepreneur, Richard has been a founder, executive, board member, and financier of businesses in more than a dozen industries.

Dawn and Richard DeSimone
“Just sign up for one or two activities, and you will meet the best people and build new lasting friendships. The community and staff are truly family to us.”

He credits Dawn with almost every business or investment idea he’s ever had. In most cases, the needs of the companies Dawn worked for seeded his business ideas, goals and plans.

When Dawn was in the advertising business, Richard steered his technology business to work with advertising agencies and within a few years after the launch of the IBM personal computer (Dawn’s account), had automated many of Madison Avenue largest agencies, showing them how to use technology to improve advertising and agency efficiency.

After the sale of one of Richard’s companies and the emptying of their nest, Richard and Dawn focused on their desire to help and support the causes that they believed needed attention in our country. They looked towards education,

healthcare, and entrepreneurship. Richard worked to get computers in the local schools and helped with a bond offering to fund it. Together with some friends they created a non-profit foundation to support private schools that focused on special needs and underprivileged students, working to support The Craig School in Mountain Lakes and St. Francis Academy in Newark, NJ. Dawn closed her business and retired once they moved to Hampton

Hall. “I’m just too busy playing pickleball, riding my bike, swimming, and enjoying all the new friends here to be bothered with working.” She has not retired from cooking, creating new recipes, and following food blogs in her spare time. “It’s fun but hasn’t helped our waistlines.” Richard continues to suffer from workaholism, but is slowly coming to grips with the idea of retirement.

Richard currently serves on the HHC Finance Committee and Dawn is serving on the Athletics Committee. They work together to support the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes.

They’ve launched their two children, Michael and Elizabeth, who have chosen to live in Minneapolis, MN and Rochester, NY respectively.

They love to travel having just returned from a Rhine River cruise, and last year they vacationed in Tuscany with the Mark and Lisa Spears and Neil and Cathy Orrill, who they met after bringing the same Italian wine to a Bocce match.

“We never thought we would find such a welcoming community as we have in HHC. Just sign up for one or two activities, and you will meet the best people and build new lasting friendships. The community and staff are truly family to us. We love it!”

“I was just playing one shot at a time with pure enjoyment mixed with a little bit of disbelief.”
— RENEE REFLECTS AFTER TYING THE LOW LADIES’ ROUND.

“From that June day in 2011 when I was fortunate enough to shoot 66 at Hampton Hall I knew it was just a matter of time until Renee would match or surpass that score...her golfing talents are extraordinary.”

On July 24, Renee Rezzetano shot 66 at Hampton Hall, tying the low ladies’ round at our course. We caught up with our reigning Club Champion to get her thoughts on the round.

Q: How had you been playing going into the round?

A: This round was a complete surprise because I have been struggling for a while with my physical and mental game. I had a good golf lesson the week before. Ironically, I didn’t have much time to warm up so hit a few balls and never hit a putt or chip before tee off which is unlike me.

Q: How did the round go?

A: I was 2 under after 6 holes then made a sloppy bogey at #7. Then I hit it pretty close on #8 and made birdie, which was funny to me because I feel like I make bogey on #8 more than par. That made me laugh and I sort of felt then that this was a special day. At the turn I knew I was 2 under and thought if I could just shoot even on the back, that would be my best round in a long time so I was thinking shot by shot…fairways and greens. Then I birdied #10 which like #8 is a bit of a surprise gift. It almost became unbelievable how well I was hitting it, and I was just very accepting and not thinking about my score at all at that point. I didn’t even know how many birdies I had on the back nine but was just playing one shot at a time with pure enjoyment mixed with a little bit of disbelief. I just tried to stay out of my own way so to speak. I didn’t know the score until we were done.

Q: Did anyone get to witness this great round?

A: I feel incredibly lucky to ever score under par and most of those rounds have been at Hampton Hall. It was such a special day with Chris Gray, Donna Cortina and Michele Proser.

Q: Is this your low round ever?

A: This ties my lowest score which also was at Hampton Hall in a LWGA event years ago. That day I made 6 birdies, this time it was 7 birdies with a bogey.

Q: Can we see your scorecard?

Fall Cocktail Corner

ALEX HEMMING

Food & Beverage Director

Fall has always been a favorite of mine, but ever since I moved from Maryland to the Lowcountry almost 10 years ago, the season has a completely different feeling and meaning. Fall used to mean leaves changing colors, crisp cold weather, chili and football, and getting back to drinking brown ales, stouts, and whiskey. While football is still on the menu down south, the rest of it looks completely different. Fall is the season that I finally venture back across the bridge to the island and get back to the beaches that I stay away from during the hot summer months full of bustling tourist activity. The beverage that I like to pair with the beach the best will always be margaritas. So, whether you are at the beach or sitting out back enjoying the weather I invite you to try one of my favorite margarita recipes – Cliff’s Edge Margarita. This cocktail has a subtle heat, slight sweetness with citrus body, and is amazingly refreshing to the point where it is difficult to have just one.

INGREDIENTS

1-2 Thin Slices of English Cucumber

.5 oz. Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

.25 oz. Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

.5 oz. Agave

.5 oz. Curacao Triple Sec

INSTRUCTIONS:

2 oz. Blanco Tequila (I really enjoy Cimarron Tequila Blanco)

1 Jalapeno sliced thin

Tajin Seasoning

Kosher Salt

Take your jalapeno slices and drop them into a bottle of tequila or a mason jar with tequila. Depending on how spicy you prefer this drink to be will dictate how much jalapeno you use and how long you let this sit. The more jalapeno slices used and the longer you let it sit the spicier it will get. I personally lean towards 5-8 slices in a mason jar for a day or two, but I also like a decent amount of spice. Remove the jalapeno before making the cocktail (these do make a good snack).

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the cucumber well. Add ice, lime juice, lemon juice, agave, curacao triple sec, and tequila. Top and shake vigorously until the shaker becomes a little frosty on the outside. Rub a cut lime wedge around the rim of the rocks glass and rim it with tajin and kosher salt. Strain the beverage into the rocks glass full of ice. Garnish with a cucumber slice and enjoy!

The Hampton Hall Fitness Center is equipped with trained and enthusiastic staff to help you reach your fitness and wellness goals.

• Do you find machine and free weights boring and repetitive?

• Do you struggle to find the time to exercise?

• Do you see your waistline increasing?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then we have the solution for you! You can have FUN while you are able to achieve serious results, increase confidence, lose weight, and feel great!

Our certified personal trainers are dedicated to providing you with a safe, comfortable, and positive experience no matter where you are in your fitness journey. Stop by the Fitness Center to learn more about personal training and meet with one of our trainers. Check the Tuesday Highlights for personal training specials!

Autumn weather brings cooler temperatures and cold air doesn’t hold moisture like warmer air, making us more prone to eczema, dermatitis, and open wounds. Therefore, being conscientious about adding more moisturizer is important.  Also, cooler temperatures may cause thickness of synovial fluid or joint fluid causing the joints to become stiff thus creating less mobility. Contemplate having a hydrating facial for a dewy complexion and a hot stone massage that can increase blood flow, which can help with healing and reduce inflammation.

As the holidays approach you can also send your visiting family to the spa located in the fitness center. If you are undecided about material gift giving, a spa gift certificate will always be enjoyed!

We Saluted Our Local Military Heroes!

The Board of Directors and volunteer team supporting the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes (LFWMH) is proud to announce that not only did we TEE IT UP FOR TWO MILLION this spring, but we hit a hole in one! This was the first year that three communities (Wexford, Oldfield, and Hampton Hall) hosted 82 heroes for the signature golf tournaments. This is the largest number of heroes participating in a single year. These heroes enjoyed a round of golf and the festivities and camaraderie at the course of their choice last April and May.

As a result of the support from each of these communities, our generous donors, and over 150 volunteers LFWMH made the largest donation since inception to Birdies for the Brave® in Ponte Vedra, FL on August 1. The donation of $300,000 brings the total financial support to an amazing $2,289,000.

The LFWMH would be remiss if it did not thank everyone involved, to include the Hampton Hall culinary team, golf staff, waitstaff, management team, and community volunteers, who assured the events held at Hampton Hall on May 17 – May 19 were a huge success.

THREE COMMUNITIES HOSTED 82 HEROES AND TEED IT UP FOR TWO MILLION!

A Big Thanks to our Hampton Hall Community!

The Hampton Hall Charitable Fund (HHCF) would like to say “THANK YOU!” to the community for generously contributing to the June “Stock the Van” food drive and August “Teacher’s Classroom Supply Drive.” These two drives gave much needed assistance to Bluffton Self Help which in turn distributed food, toiletries and school supplies to those in need.

In order to continue our mission to support the charitable interests and outreach efforts of the residents of Hampton Hall while also assisting with needs within the larger community, several upcoming enjoyable events are scheduled. Join us on Friday, September 6 for “The End of Summer Concert Bash” featuring the local musical group Artificially Hip! Come dance to the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s Rock & Roll music while enjoying an optional dinner buffet. All concert ticket proceeds are generously being donated by Artificially Hip to the HHCF.

Our Third Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held Tuesday, September 24. Come enjoy “A Stroll in Central Park” with fashions provided by Monkee’s of Bluffton. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase.

On Friday, November 22 the HHCF will be hosting a “Stock the Cellar” Wine event with the opportunity to sample and purchase wine just in time for the upcoming holiday season. Speaking of the holidays, if you love to decorate for the season and would enjoy sharing your design talent with the community, let us know if your home could be included in our annual Holiday Home Tour scheduled for Sunday, December 8. Help others in the community get into the holiday spirit!

Proceeds from all of these events make it possible for us to distribute much needed grant money to many local charitable organizations within Beaufort and Jasper Counties. We greatly appreciate everyone’s interest and generosity.

For more information about the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund, contact Lori Desing at desing5@aol.com. We look forward to seeing you soon!
