FROM THE DESK of the
Dear Members,
It has been my pleasure to lead Hampton Hall Club and community over the past five years through its transition from the declarant to a member-owned club. Today, Hampton Hall has a very strong and healthy balance sheet, a vibrant membership, and a professional and experienced management team and staff.
Taking over the leadership of a club community following a transition can be a daunting task. Especially one that has a diverse demographic of retirees, young professionals, families and three distinct home types, along with a complex governance and operational structure outlined in its covenants. However, in 2019, I led the Board on the road to two of their most important responsibilities, creating and forming a strategic vision for the future of Hampton Hall Club along with identifying their fiduciary responsibilities and financial needs for the future of the community. This work was instrumental in establishing Hampton Hall’s vision, mission, and strategies to achieve the goals we set then and are currently working on today. Communication as an initiative was identified as a top pillar in our strategic plan. Today, we utilize several communication platforms for our members including a responsive website, “Coffee with the GM”, town hall meetings and board briefs. We continue to address the expectations and desires of all members.
In March 2020, COVID-19 entered the world. Your professional staff held Hampton Hall together as a community offering programs for engagement while practicing social distancing and continuing to show up for work. The management team and I learned a great deal about the membership, ourselves, and each other over my tenure. Foremost, we enjoy working together as a team to serve the membership. Through educational opportunities and innovative programming our team continues to meet challenges head on while planning for operational needs of the Club. Balancing the membership experience and practicing fiscal responsibility are paramount to our team’s success. I truly believe that our staff is our greatest asset.

Together, through my work with committees and advisory groups, HHC embarked in 2021-2022, on a campus wide Master Plan for the community. In 2022, we settled the lawsuit with the declarant, and I formalized a new Infrastructure Advisory group to oversee the long-awaited lagoon remediation project. We also began a property wide common grounds improvement plan, and now in 2023, are in the process of rewriting our covenants and by-laws with a renowned attorney that specializes in private club governing documents. These documents should be brought to the membership for review this fall.
Through the work and support of many, membership fees are now at an appropriate and competitive level for our current market. The increase in membership fees, along with responsible budget and reserve planning have allowed a full remodel of our Community Clubhouse, the installation of an automated front gate operation system and a brandnew sports complex for bocce and pickleball (featured to the right). We have also refurbished the outdoor and indoor pool complexes and are midway through the restoration of our Pete Dye Signature 18-hole golf course. The funds for these projects were all accumulated following the developer turnover and all the projects were envisioned and executed without debt or a special assessment!
I am proud to say Hampton Hall has been voted “The Best Community in Bluffton”, received rankings in Club and Resort’s “Top 100” for several different categories, was featured in Executive Golfer as a premier golf course in the Carolinas and is second to none in the inordinate number of friendly neighbors. This has led to a significant increase in home values over the past five years. Truly a remarkable story and one I am very proud of.
I share this with you professionally and personally as I embark on my new career opportunity and leave the safety of our gates…I will remember fondly all of the wonderful and very professional staff that I call my work family, and I will
Welcome LISA RANDALL Executive Assistant to the General Managerreflect on the amazing friendships I’ve developed and the abundant support I received as your leader from so many of you. Change can be scary…of course, it’s breaking out of your comfort zone and going for something new. But without change, there is no growth. Growth and change go hand in hand, and when together, they lead to greater happiness and fulfillment. Remember this when you envision the future of Hampton Hall as it to grows as a club and community in the Bluffton area. Be Outstanding Together!
Warmest Regards,
Loraine VienneMeet Lisa Randall, our Executive Assistant to the General Manager. Lisa has administrative experience in education and town municipalities. Ambassador Program Update
Hampton Hall Club’s Ambassador Program continues to improve and grow.
Over 60 enthusiastic Hampton Hall Members attended an informational meeting on the Ambassador Program in February! We thank our Membership Advisory Group Members Jim Ansberry, Jill Freedman, Barbara Hardman, Bunk Hill, Jim Richeal, Mary Walker and Donna Wheeler for planning and conducting the session. Attendees learned more about the program and best practices for serving as ambassadors to new members. They heard testimonials from other ambassadors as well as new members on their positive experiences. Current ambassadors also shared feedback and great suggestions for making the program even better. Thank you to all of our Hampton Hall Ambassadors who welcome new members to the community!
Your Club’s Ambassadors warmly greet new members and make them feel at home. Their role is essential in the Club’s mission to provide a welcoming, inclusive, and comfortable environment. Whether it’s a friendly email or phone call, an invitation to play golf, tennis or pickleball, or an opportunity to mix and mingle at a dining event, Ambassadors help build connections and spark friendships. Neighbors become friends and friends become family!

memberSPOTLIGHT
While Carl and Carol have lived in Hampton Hall for a little over a year, they have already accumulated a lifetime of friends and memories. Before transitioning from full time work to retirement, Carol and Carl lived their entire lives in the Hudson Valley in New York. The couple met while working together at a law firm in Poughkeepsie in the early 1980s and married a decade later after Carl finally woke up and realized Carol was the one. Carl practiced law with a firm for ten years, and then had a successful real estate practice for the next thirty years. Carol worked in banking early in her career, and then fulfilled her dream of being a stay-at-home mom. She eventually went back to work for a local municipality as Assistant to the Town Planner and is sorely missed for her work ethic and her baking prowess.
Carl and Carol have two children, Connor (26) and Caylea (23). Connor is a huge Buffalo Bills fan. Carl told him early on he was destined for a lifetime of misery! He graduated from the University at Buffalo. Connor and his
Caylea graduated from Colgate University (Carl’s alma mater) in 2021 and used her gap year to establish her own successful jewelry business (MadebyCaylea.com) while working full time for an energy company that concentrates in wind and solar energy projects around the country.
“Carl and Carol tell all of their friends to join them to enjoy all that Hampton Hall has to offer and to have their Google calendars ready to be filled up…it’s like summer camp for adults!”
She recently completed her first year at the University of Virginia School of Law and plans to specialize in environmental law. Caylea and her longtime boyfriend, David, got engaged last summer while on vacation in Costa Rica and plan to marry after she graduates. They have the cutest wiener dog named Barnaby.
Carl and Carol are long-time owners in Hampton Hall, having discovered the community in 2005 on an exploratory trip looking for a great place to retire someday. After falling in love with Hampton Hall, they decided to build that year, but having children late in life kept them working until recently. Since settling in last winter, Carol has been active with the Ladies with Ladies group and has loved helping decorate the clubhouse for many of the fun events we are fortunate to have here. She plays Bunco and Mahjong and enjoys taking weekly Zumba classes at the fitness center.
Carl signed up for pickleball their second week in the community and has enjoyed playing several times a week ever since. He enjoys his pickleball peeps and recently played with the inaugural Hampton Hall 3.0 men’s league. Carl plays advanced Euchre, bridge with the Monday afternoon group and is a founding member of the Hampton Hall History Hounds. Carl enjoys Lowcountry history and is in training to be a docent at the Heyward House. Together
they host a beginner Euchre group monthly and play on a Bocce team. They also love taking OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) classes at USCB, exploring the Penn Center, Hunting Island Park and HHI historic sites.
Carl and Carol love to travel, and were fortunate to be able to take several family vacations with their children, including memorable trips to China and Hong Kong, the Canadian Rockies to Vancouver, Hawaii, a Mediterranean cruise, and a fabulous bus tour of our Western National Parks. Last fall, they enjoyed a cruise through the Aegean and Adriatic from Athens to Venice. This summer will find them on a Scotland intensive cruise followed by a driving tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Many of you probably don’t know that Carl is adopted and after testing with Ancestry.com, he discovered that he has 20 surviving paternal first cousins in County Down, Northern Ireland. Carl and Carol look forward to meeting some of the cousins in September after their cruise. They won’t be surprised if a few pints of Guinness are part of the celebration!
Having such a positive experience moving to Bluffton last year, Carl and Carol tell all of their friends to join them while they are able to enjoy all that Hampton Hall has to offer. Be sure to have your Google calendars ready to be filled up once you are here…it’s like summer camp for adults!

Wounded Heroes Golf Classic and Charity Par 3
by Brent Carlson PGA Head Golf ProfessionalIam often asked what makes Hampton Hall unique. The golf amenities here are outstanding, but I am quick to point out the people are what make this club special. I was reminded of this after visiting Wexford, one of the host sites for the 2023 Wounded Heroes event. Their membership’s interest has been sparked by something that began at Hampton Hall many years ago. The Wounded Heroes event truly benefits a great cause.
For me there is much satisfaction in watching our members “give” of themselves to benefit others. I believe that quality makes a place “special.” Think about it – how often do we give without expecting something in return?
I know I could do better in this regard and the Wounded Heroes event inspires me in that spirit.
We also saw it earlier this year with the Charity Par 3. The good people of Hampton Hall coming together to give of themselves to benefit others – most of whom we will never meet.
I am not sure which of the adjectives is the best – unselfish, humble, selfless, generous. Go ahead and pick one. I hope you are as inspired as I am by them, and that we will continue to support these worthy causes while seeking out new opportunities to be a part of.
How are the clubhouses at Hampton Hall? – Impressive
How is the golf course at Hampton Hall? – Beautiful
How are the people of Hampton Hall? — Special!

~LADIES’ MEMBER GUEST~ Ladies Golf Through the Ages
from the FAIRWAYS
by Matt Sapochak, Golf Course SuperintendentIrrigation System Updates
When talking to private club members, the most common golf course priorities are greens quality, fairways, and in Hampton Hall’s case, drainage.
Nothing will give you a quality golf course without a good irrigation system. Hampton Hall’s irrigation system will turn 20 years old this summer and is still state-of-the-art, given its individual irrigation head control, computerized central irrigation control system, ability to apply .16 of an inch of water to the golf course in 9 hours, and central controls that can be accessed remotely along with a few other minor features. Our current system has all these features, but some of the components are getting old. Irrigation heads and satellite boxes, for example, require significantly more maintenance and parts replacement than just four years ago.
At the heart of the irrigation system is the pump station. Your General Manager and Golf Board have approved necessary upgrades to our variable speed pump station over the past several years. Upgrades consisted of a new variable speed computer drive, control panel, new software and the latest addition is a vertical turbine pump.
MEN’S MEMBER MEMBER
Due to the age of our three current pumps, it was time to start replacing them before they failed. Having a pump fail in the past was not a problem, since the typical turnaround time for a replacement was two to four weeks. However, the turnaround time today is three to six months depending on parts availability. I am currently working towards having the other two pumps removed and replaced by the beginning of summer 2024. Taking this action will ensure our irrigation system works at the optimum level required to maintain quality turf on the golf course that our members expect and enjoy.

The Importance of a Strong Core
Michele DiCarlo, CPT, TPI Level 1 Certified Sports, Recreation and Activities DirectorAs we get older, we lose flexibility, mobility, and stability if we do not continue to stay active. All three of these are important to having a strong golf swing, and who doesn’t want to improve their golf game? Flexibility is one of the first things we begin to lose as part of the aging process, which leads to decreased mobility. Think about when you were younger and how active you were. You need to “USE IT OR LOSE IT”. Every time we move, we depend on muscles to hold us steady and other muscles to move us. Core stabilization is a general term for how the muscles of your trunk keep your spine and body stable. This helps you stay balanced when you move. If your core muscles are strong and they contract when they should:
• Your posture is better.
• Your body is balanced.
• Your movement is more efficient and powerful.
• You may be less likely to be injured.
If you know me, I am always saying brace your core before any movement. Not necessarily just pulling the belly button into your spine (that’s the easiest way to describe it) but also engaging all muscles in unison to act like a corset. If you only pull your belly button in, your pelvis can dip. You want to brace or contract those muscles in your abdomen and sides like you are getting ready to have someone punch you in the stomach. The core muscles have two main functions:
1. to spare the spine from excessive load
2. to transfer force from the lower body to the upper body and vice versa.
Having a strong, stable core helps prevent injuries, have good posture and allows us to perform at our best. We offer a core and more class (Pilates) which works all your core muscles. Core stability benefits everyone from older people to the top professional athletes. Exercises for the core can be part of every conditioning program along with flexibility, strength, and aerobic training.
Pictured here are a few muscles of the trunk: The transverse abdominus is like a corset around your abdomen. It’s the muscle you work if you pull in your stomach. The rectus abdominus is your 6-pack area and is responsible for flexion of the torso. The internal and external obliques are the muscles that run along the side of your torso and are responsible for lateral movements. The multifidus is a muscle that lies along your spine from your neck to your pelvis and is responsible for stabilizing the lower back. The muscles of the pelvic floor are most noticeable when you squeeze to keep yourself from urinating.
Your trunk is the foundation for your posture, balance, and coordinated movement. The muscles of your trunk can be strengthened and trained to contract in the proper order to give you this stable foundation for movement. The following page shows some great core exercises to practice and perfect.
CORE EXERCISES TO PRACTICE AND PERFECT
HIGH PLANK – keep a straight line through the body, preventing the hips from sagging toward the floor. Shoulders are directly over wrists.
WEIGHTED CARRIES – a great way to practice transferring force through the body. You can carry a weight in one or both hands and simply walk for a certain distance or time. The focus is on staying long through the body and not bending or twisting in any direction. These carries can be done with the weight by your side(s) or pressing the weight overhead and reaching for the sky!
SIDE PLANK – maintain a straight line from your head to your heels to prevent side bending
HIP THRUST – while lying on your back, bend your knees to roughly 90 degrees and press your feet firmly into the floor. Squeeze the glute muscles to lift your hips off the floor, getting your shoulders, hips, and knees into a straight line.
Summer is here and so is the heat! With such busy activity this season, we must remember to hydrate as the high temperatures can be draining. New pickleball and bocce courts are in full swing with fun competition, which could result in a few sore muscles. Consider a rejuvenating and relaxing massage of homeopathic Arnica blended oils. This will target those aches and pains, creating a sense of comfort and balance. A hydrating facial is also a great way to soothe your complexion. Treat yourself and your visitors to professional and enjoyable spa treatments. The spa is in the fitness center, and a variety of specials and gift certificates are available.

CHARITABLE FUND
It’s been a busy and successful year so far for the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund! We love supporting the needs of the surrounding community and holding various events throughout the year to raise funds for our grants program.
On March 3, we had our annual Par 3 Golf Tournament benefiting the Beaufort Memorial Keyserling Cancer Center. It was a record-breaking year. Attendees enjoyed an afternoon of golf and had the opportunity to participate in raffles and a silent auction.
We recently held our “April in Paris” Luncheon and Fashion Show sponsored by LUX Medical Spa. We were honored to have four vendors at the event, two of them being Hampton Hall residents. Featured raffle items included a Jimmy Choo purse, Kendra Scott
Jewelry, spa gift certificates, original artwork, and handcrafted clothing. Fashion Show Sponsor Patsy Hodge from Bluffton’s local boutique Eggs’n’tricities, provided beautiful clothing to showcase on our very own Hampton Hall models.
Hampton Hall members “Stocked the Van” in May. Donations to assist our local community were collected and filled the Bluffton Self Help van parked outside the Community Clubhouse. We look forward to our Wine Tasting Event in October and, of course, our annual Toy Drive at the end of the year.
The Hampton Hall Charitable Fund thanks all our members, volunteers, and staff for their continued support in all our endeavors.
