Dear Hampton Hall Members,

Warm holiday greetings to you and your families from your team at Hampton Hall. The holiday season is a truly special time here, where “Hampton Hall-spitality” shines and can be genuinely felt throughout our community. We’re looking forward to celebrating with you at all the exciting events and programs planned this season!

As we close out 2024, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our Hampton Hall volunteers whose dedication and effort made this year extraordinary. We’re incredibly grateful to our Club and Golf Board

Congratulations to our Employee of the Quarter:

SOPHIA HOUSTON!

We’re thrilled to recognize Sophia Houston as Hampton Hall’s Employee of the Quarter!

Sophia, originally from Jamaica, has been a valued member of our Food & Beverage Service team for nearly five months. With years of hospitality experience, she brings a wealth of passion and expertise to her role, and her warmth and dedication shine through in everything she does.

Sophia’s journey in hospitality began in her teens, and she even worked as a chef back in Jamaica. Now, she’s happily settled in the Lowcountry, where she’s lived for 20 years with her family. Sophia and her husband, a chef at the Sand Bar in Coligny Plaza, have two wonderful children: a daughter in

of Directors for their commitment to preserving all that makes Hampton Hall a place to be proud of. A special thanks to our outgoing Board Members, Dan O’Donovan and Bill LaSorsa, for your invaluable service, time, and dedication.

We are also fortunate to have passionate members contributing through committees, advisory groups, the Charitable Fund, Ladies with Ladies, and a variety of clubs. Many volunteer efforts go on behind the scenes, like those responsible for displaying American flags around the community on patriotic holidays or helping to decorate the clubhouses for the season. Together, these combined efforts make Hampton Hall the vibrant, welcoming place we all call home.

nursing school and a son attending Hilton Head High School.

At Hampton Hall, Sophia loves the friendly community, the beautiful surroundings, and, of course, the fantastic food crafted by our culinary team. Outside of work, Sophia enjoys cooking, shopping, and spending time on the water, whether relaxing at the beach or fishing with her family.

Thank you, Sophia, for your dedication, hard work, and positivity. We’re grateful to have you as part of the Hampton Hall family—congratulations!

Reflecting on 2024, it’s an honor to celebrate all we’ve accomplished together with your support, volunteerism, and the hard work of our dedicated professional management team. Serving as your GM/COO alongside a talented team and such a supportive membership is a privilege. Please take a moment to reflect on some of our shared accomplishments from the past year:

Joe and Sandy Zando

Before moving to Hampton Hall, Joe and Sandy Zando lived in Charleston, WV, where both had busy careers. Joe made a midlife career shift, graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, at age 37 and then launching a catering company that kept him busy for twenty years. Sandy, meanwhile, left her role as Senior Vice President at a regional bank to lead a local hospital foundation as Executive Director.

Joe and Sandy enjoyed vacations at the Marriott Barony Beach timeshare since 2001. After Sandy retired, they began looking for a retirement home and visited Bluffton in July 2018. As it happened, the final home they toured in Bluffton was on Waybridge Circle in Hampton Hall—and after a quick sale of their Charleston home, they knew Hampton Hall was where they belonged.

Joe and Sandy agree Hampton Hall’s beauty draws you in, but it’s the warmth of the people that makes the community truly special. For Joe and Sandy, it’s not just the friendly

residents but also the welcoming staff who feel like family. They love getting together with their neighbors.

Joe has taken up golf, enjoying rounds with his new friends and breakfast outings with the “Waybridge Boys.” Sandy began watercolor painting, inspired by the coastal scenery, and she keeps active with a Bible study class, Canasta, Bunco, and adventures with the “lunch ladies.” She also helped create the Hampton Hall Art Club, which brings together many talented members. Sandy also loves the Ladies with Ladies events that are always so fun. When they’re not

enjoying all that Hampton Hall has to offer, the Zandos head to the beach every chance they get.

Giving back is also important to Joe and Sandy, and both participated in the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes Golf Classic. Joe was honored to escort one of the heroes and Sandy helped with donations and auction items.

“The Housewives of Waybridge” came together with two beautiful wine baskets for auction items.

Though they miss friends in WV, Joe and Sandy feel they have the best of both worlds at Hampton Hall. They love meeting new friends as well as entertaining house guests at the Zando B&B or meeting with friends who have moved to or are vacationing on Hilton Head Island. Their 11-year-old Maltese, Lilly, joins them for neighborhood strolls, where they catch up with fellow residents walking Oz, Molly, The Hooligans, Tucker, Chicky, Jesse and Max.

Joe and Sandy say they couldn’t imagine living anywhere else but Hampton Hall.

Member Member Golf Tournaments Recap

We recently wrapped up our Men’s and Women’s Member Member events, and what a great time it was! It’s always a pleasure watching the teams come together and navigate their way around the course. The course itself was in fantastic condition, offering just the right challenge for both tournaments.

For the Ladies’ event, we had our very first Shoot-out, and the excitement was contagious! Teams played holes #1 and #2, striving to make net par or better to advance. Shout-out to MaryAnn Bender & Tressa Clark, Trudi Nelson & Patty Pohlman, and Beth Santee & Jan McLain for their stellar play to reach the finals. In an exciting finish, Donna Cortina & Renee Rezzetano faced off against longtime friends Sue Catalano & Tori Moyski on hole #2. Sue’s impressive drive, followed by Tori’s clutch approach shot landing just 10 feet from the pin, sealed the deal in an unforgettable ending!

Ladies’ Member Member Champions Sue Catalano & Tori Moyski

On the Men’s side, the final showdown came down to two sudden-death playoff holes! Mike Moyski & Mark O’Neill squared off against the dynamic duo of Jim Cadres & Steve Baker—a team that’s been together longer than ham and eggs. It was thrilling to witness their teamwork in action.

“Shake and Bake” came through with a fantastic long putt that clinched their victory. Other teams making it to the Shootout were: Dennis Arnold & Jay Sluyter, Kevin Doherty & Rob Webb, John Petito & Larry Muschlitz, Steve Allsop & Phil Surico, Craig Paterson & Scott Thornhill, Chris Beaudry & Matt Raehn, Tim Neese & Adam Rivera, and Scott Magee & Justin Imel.

We enjoyed great weather, plenty of laughs, delicious food, and an all-around fantastic time.

Congratulations to all the participants!

SEASON’S GREENINGS:

Winter Prep for a Weed-Free Lawn

By the time you’re reading this in the Bridge, Christmas will be just around the corner. It’s that time of year for gathering with family and friends, finding just the right gifts, and whipping up a special dish for a party—the one that has everyone saying, “Wow, this is the best I’ve ever had.” I think about all those things, I really do. But in the back of my mind, I’m always thinking about Preemergent Herbicide (Pre-M). It’s a critical step in the battle against summer weeds, and it has to be applied at just the right time.

Of course, there’s also that second application of Pre-M in the first two weeks of December, essential for controlling Poa Annua. Come New Year’s, we’re only six to eight weeks away from that first Pre-M application, depending on the weather. As a rule of thumb, crabgrass seeds start germinating once the soil temperature at 1 inch deep stays at 55 degrees for four consecutive days. I usually do my first Pre-M application the last week of February, though I may adjust it depending on the weather. While I do use a thermometer to monitor soil temps, late February is generally a safe bet.

Don’t forget: it’s also very important to reapply Pre-M in May, since most Pre-M treatments last only about 60 to 70 days. By then, the second round of summer weeds is getting ready to germinate.

I hope this information helps your yard out next year.

Winter’s cooler weather often brings on the desire for long hot showers, but limiting hot temps to 10 minutes following with 5 minutes warm water will help prevent the skin from psoriasis and eczema. Opting for thicker moisturizers containing ceramides and hyaluronic acids, such as CeraVe, will help seal in moisture during the cooler months.

Additionally, consider a massage or facial treatment enriched with hydrating, plant-based oils. Not only will this nourish your skin, but it also provides a soothing, relaxing experience to help you unwind.

The Hampton Hall Charitable Fund extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of our recent events: the “End of Summer Bash” featuring the band Artificially Hip on September 6, 2024, and the “A Stroll in Central Park” Fashion Show on September 24, 2024. These events raised significant funds for our annual Grants Program, highlighting the generous spirit of our Hampton Hall members.

Special thanks to Beth Anderson, Director of Operations, for connecting with Artificially Hip, who kindly donated their time for our fundraising efforts, and to Eric Bischofberger, our General Manager, for his continued support of the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund’s initiatives.

We also extend our gratitude to Monkee’s, a local Bluffton boutique, for being our Gold Sponsor and for providing the clothing, accessories, and overall presentation for the fashion show. Thank you to our Silver Sponsors, Lux Medical Spa and Elle Michele Photography, as well as our numerous raffle donors. In this time of great need, we deeply appreciate the participation of all attendees and the generosity of our raffle contributors.

2024 CHILDREN’S BOOK DRIVE

Hampton Hall’s Those of Prose Book Club has kicked-off their 15th annual book drive, inviting you to donate NEW children’s books to benefit three local organizations: The Boys and Girls Club (Bluffton), The Children’s Center (Hilton Head Island) and CAPA (Beaufort). Please deliver books by December 12.

Books can be dropped off in a box on the porch at 247 Farnsleigh Avenue, or mailed directly to that address. Need help? You can click on the Amazon link below from your PC/laptop (tablets & mobile phones do not work well) to find book lists. Amazon requires you to immediately sign into your own account in order to view lists for all five age groups; it will also give you the option to mail selected books to the Hampton Hall Book Club. Either purchase specific books, select from a series, or choose a favorite that is not listed.

Thank you from Those of Prose and all the kids you will make happy with a good book!

The “End of the Summer Bash” featured the band, Artificially Hip.

THANK YOU!

Additionally, we are grateful to our volunteer models, decorators, and the Hampton Hall Club Food & Beverage Staff for orchestrating an outstanding luncheon and show. Events like these require extensive planning, hard work, and dedication to achieve success.

We are currently accepting applications from local non-profit charitable organizations in Beaufort and Jasper counties for our annual grant distribution program, allowing us to support worthy causes in our community.

Looking ahead, please join us for our Annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, December 8, 2024. Mark your calendars as well for Friday, March 7, 2025, when our annual Par 3 Golf Outing will be held to raise funds for the Beaufort Memorial Cancer Foundation. Monkee’s provided the clothing and accessories for the HHCF Fashion Show. Our golf pro, Brent Carlson, and his team promise an enjoyable day on the Hampton Hall golf course, with food and raffles following your round of golf — all for a meaningful cause.

For more information about the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund, please contact Lori Desing at desing5@aol.com. We look forward to seeing you soon!
