HAMPTON HALL CLUB
A Private Club Community in the Heart of the Lowcountry
Every year the CMAA, Club Manager’s Association of America, hosts the Annual National Conference for over 5,000 International Club Managers. This year the Annual CMAA Conference is being held in Orlando, Florida, February 21 - 28. The conference provides opportunities to gain new ideas and insights for our club through more than 65 stellar education sessions. These education sessions provide information across 11 educational competencies; including governance, strategy, human resources, communications, food and beverage, golf, tennis and sports and recreation.
Additionally, the two-day Club Business Expo provides an opportunity to explore products and services offered by more than 200 companies showcasing industry leading trends and innovations.
There is also an Idea Fair with entries on display during the conference. This is where many leaders are inspired and gain new insights for providing the ultimate member experiences by borrowing best practices and creative event ideas from other clubs.
This year, I will again have the opportunity to participate in the Bicycle Chautauqua, led by Gregg Patterson, industry expert and former manager of “The Beach Club” in Santa Monica, California. Chautauquas were developed in the mid-nineteenth century as “mobile universities” that moved across America offering popular talks intended to bring insight and entertainment to rural America. The Bicycle Chautauqua has updated the concept by creating a reflective opportunity for working professionals to escape from the trenches; to bond and connect with ideas and people; and to think deeply about club management in a physically stimulating social setting.
I look forward to bringing back many good ideas from conference to continue to improve upon the culture and experience that Hampton Hall Club provides for its residents in a robust and engaged lifestyle community.
Afterall, we have created our own Chautauqua here in Bluffton.

Our Hampton Hall neighbors have done it again! The Those of Prose 13th Annual book drive benefiting The Boys and Girls Club (Bluffton), The Children’s Center (Hilton Head Island) and CAPA (Beaufort) collected and donated 437 books. Thanks to all of you who helped make 437 children happy this holiday season. We believe owning a book can encourage a lifetime love of reading.
Contact member Alice Pitts at akpitts51@yahoo.com to learn more about the Those of Prose Book Club.
Congratulations
Jonathan and Heather Arthur, son and daughter-in-law of Hampton Hall resident Rita Griffith (thank you Rita!), explained behind the scenes planning required for common stunt work, including falls, car crashes, explosions, water work, and fights.
The Arthur’s son, Chase, demonstrated how wire is used to make someone “fly back" after receiving a kick to the side. Rita’s other son, Christopher Arthur, also a stunt man, set his arm on fire and displayed how to safely extinguish.
It was a fun and informative evening. Everyone appreciated why stunts should not be attempted at home! If you’d like to see more from this evening, visit our Instagram page: @hamptonhallsc
Jonathan was recently the Stunt Coordinator and stunt double for Zac Efron in The Greatest Beer Run Ever, a true story about Vietnam, currently trending on Apple+ TV. He has been in Where the Crawdads Sing, Avatar, Fast and Furious, and more. He is also a SAG Awards nominee.
Heather Arthur is best known for her work in Pirates of the Caribbean, Iron Man 2, Captain America, and was recently the Stunt Coordinator for the Disney+ series Secrets of Sulphur Springs. She won a SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series (Heroes) and Best Overall Stunt by a Stunt Woman at the World Stunt Awards for her work on Obsessed. The couple currently reside in Hawaii where they run stunts for the TV series NCIS: Hawaii.

The Wheelers made Hampton Hall home in December of 2020. Prior to living in Hampton Hall, Mark and Donna lived in a quaint New England town known as Bedford, New Hampshire. They spent 25 fabulous years in Bedford raising their children: Oliver, Aidan, and Isabelle. They spent summers playing tennis and swimming at the “Bluffs,” and winters ski racing all over Northern New England.
Mark and his brother were co-owners of the family business, New England Duplicator. Mark spent 25 years at the “Dupe” serving the local Manchester community. When he was not working, Mark was volunteering for the Gunstock Ski Team as a course maintenance worker, board member, and #1 fan of Aidan and Isabelle while they were racing. He also spent time golfing at various courses in New Hampshire.
Donna dedicated her career to the non-profit sector. She likes to think of herself as mission driven. Over the years, she worked at the Granite YMCA, Meals on Wheels and rounded out her career at the Greater Manchester/Nashua Board of REALTORS as Association Executive. In her spare time, she volunteered at the YMCA, coached her daughter’s cheer squad, was a member of several USTA tennis teams and most importantly, spent precious time with her children and granddaughter, Everleigh.
“The people are friendly, there are plenty of activities to participate in, and we can do it all without having to get in the car everyday.”
becomes a loyal fan. His favorite artists include Jason Isbell and The Grateful Dead. Donna is an avid reader and enjoys sharing this passion with others in her book club. Donna also loves yoga. She spent 10 years as a yoga instructor and now enjoys practicing as a participant.
Hampton Hall is one of the most wellrounded and diverse communities in Bluffton with so much to offer. Donna and Mark have met many wonderful people and are grateful for such a welcoming community with the best neighbors. Come join us!
After many snowy winters, it was time for a change. They chose Hampton Hall for several reasons. The location is great and they love the proximity to Savannah and Hilton Head Island. It felt like “home” with a strong community spirit. The people are friendly, there are plenty of activities to participate in, and they can do it all without having to get in the car everyday (a big change from NH!).
Since moving to Hampton Hall, Mark and Donna have developed a love for pickleball. Mark is an avid golfer, and you will often find him in the yard maintaining their property. He’s always had a green thumb! Donna plays on several Hampton Hall tennis teams, is a member of the Ladies’ Golf Society, and volunteers on the Membership Advisory Group. One of Donna’s favorite places in Hampton Hall is her hammock in the backyard. It is so peaceful!
They love having their family and friends visit, especially their granddaughter, Everleigh, who loves coming to “Carolina” to swim in the pool and participate in the family activities. The 4th of July party and parade is her favorite, along with the Thanksgiving 5K and gelato at Splash Café.
Outside of Hampton Hall, Mark and Donna enjoy exploring Hilton Head Island and Old Town on their bikes. Mark works at the PGA Superstore where he can share his love of golf, and Donna works at South Beach Racquet Club sharing her love of tennis. Mark is a music enthusiast. He is always exploring different artists, and once hooked,
Every year the PGA of America puts on an event called the PGA Show in Orlando, Florida. The show is so overwhelmingly big that it is hard to describe. It fills up the Orange County Convention Center. It is aisles and aisles of the latest equipment from all the major manufacturers in golf.
Over 900 vendors exhibited this year with a very diverse group of products and services. There are booths with small items such as tees and ball markers all the way up to huge booths showing off the clubs and balls you would recognize just by seeing the packaging.
The apparel booths are also very impressive and most are set up with the upcoming year’s offerings. Shoes, caps, tops, bottoms, and everything in between are on display.
Guest speakers and golf celebrities are on hand to discuss the current trends in the industry and the state of golf. Many good ideas are shared at the show.
Personally, it is fun for me each year to check out the college aisle of the show which house the Professional Golf Management programs. It brings me back to the good old days of dreaming of being able to work at one of the greatest clubs in the country.
I love it when dreams come true…

Members throughout the Hampton Hall community have been asking me what is going to be done to the golf course during the restoration project. The golf course at Hampton Hall opened in March of 2004 and has held up well. However, as with any golf course after 19 years, there are a few issues that need to be addressed.
First, the Tifdwarf Bermuda grass on the greens will be replaced with a new Ultradwarf Bermudagrass. Ultradwarf Bermudagrass will make greens much smoother and allow greens speeds to be much more consistent year-round. Organic matter has built up in the top few inches of our putting green surfaces, which is natural for the age for our greens. Organic matter will be removed and replaced with new mix. Once the new mix is installed, greens will be floated out and replanted.
The soil under most of the fairways consists of a very heavy clay that does not allow water to quickly perk through the soil. The water only perks about a ¼ of an inch per 24 hours. When the course receives rain in the winter months when days are short and temperatures are cool, conditions require carts to be on the paths. To help drain the clay-based fairways so golf carts can get back out on to the fairways sooner, new drainage will be installed. All clay-based fairways, which will include the cart entrance and exit areas, will have sub surface drainage installed on 10 foot spacing. Drainage will pull water out of the soil constantly allowing fairways to dry up much faster than they currently do. Approaches, collars and greens surrounds will be drained as well.
Next, all the white sand bunkers will be restored to true Pete Dye style. We will lower the front lip and raise bunker floors to make sand visible from the tees and fairways. Being able to see the sand in the bunkers will help frame the greens, providing players better visibility and a look with some pop so to speak. Some backs of bunkers will be softened to allow members to play a shot off the grass face without falling down back into the bunker-I have seen that happen quite a few times over the years! All in all the restoration will give our members a more memorable and payable golf course as well as attract new members for years to come.
Alex Hemming, Food & Beverage Director
Spring is always one of my favorite times of the year for coming up with fun and creative cocktails. While we can all go to the grocery store and buy different fruits and vegetables to help with flavors in cocktails, a good majority of the fruits are not in season yet in the Lowcountry. I truly love going to farmers markets or local produce stores to gather local fresh fruits and vegetables, but it can be a challenge to find freshly picked fruits aside from strawberries and blueberries early on in the spring.
Strawberries are always a good fruit for a cocktail, and blueberries add a few subtle notes, but I enjoy the challenge of using something a little outside the box with a cool-weather crop. This spring I am sharing a cocktail that is in season and a twist on a very popular classic. Derby Day is coming up towards the end of the spring and this recipe will give you enough time to perfect this cocktail for such a fun event. Introducing…“Can you Beet this Julep?”
2 oz. Bourbon
½ oz. Beet Simple Syrup
½. oz. Maple Syrup
4 Springs Mint
In a glass, gently muddle the mint, beet simple syrup, and maple syrup. Fill with crushed ice, add your bourbon of choice, and stir well. Garnish with the sprigs of mint and enjoy. Cheers!
Beet Simple Syrup – make a traditional simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water) in a sauce pot, add beets and a little more water than usual as we will be simmering this for about 25 minutes. After simmering, press and strain out the solids from the simple syrup. Voila! Beet Simple Syrup.
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, plus more for buttering the pan
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate (not chips), chopped
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, plus more for dusting the cake
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
6 large eggs, separated
Whipped cream, for serving
Special equipment: A 9-inch spring-form pan
METHOD:
1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F and butter the inside of a spring-form pan. Melt the chocolate and butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat; stirring frequently until smooth. Stir in the sugar, cocoa powder and salt until all of the lumps are gone. Remove from the heat and let cool for a few minutes.
2. Meanwhile, beat the egg whites in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until they form stiff peaks, 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Stir the egg yolks into the cooled chocolate mixture, then stir in about a quarter of the whipped egg whites. Scrape this lightened chocolate mixture into the remaining whipped egg whites and gently fold until mostly combined (it’s ok if there are some streaks of egg white). Pour into the prepared pan and bake until the center of the cake no longer wiggles, 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool completely in the pan, on a wire rack (the cake will deflate slightly). Unlock the pan and dust the top of the cake with some cocoa powder. Cut into slices and serve with whipped cream.

We are thrilled to welcome John Huffenberger to the Hampton Hall Club team as our new Executive Chef!
John is an ACF Certified Chef de Cuisine who has worked in the hospitality industry for nearly 20 years. Most recently he served as the Executive Chef at Connestee Falls in Brevard, NC.
While attending culinary school, John worked in the gourmet food industry at Emeril’s in Universal Studios City Walk, Orlando, FL. He received allencompassing seafood experience while working at The Market in downtown Columbus, GA and his first experience with private dining was at the Green Island Country Club in Columbus, GA. Much of his management and fine dining experience comes from his time at the Big Eddy Club, a 400-member private dining club in Columbus.
He looks forward to making the Lowcountry home along with his wife and their three daughters. Outside of his work here at Hampton Hall, John values time with his family. They enjoy staying active, going to parks, and hiking.
Chef John looks forward to providing an outstanding culinary experience for the membership at the Club!
This treat is really light with a brownie-like texture at the same time. Serve with fresh spring berries and whipped cream, and enjoy with friends and a cup of coffee.
As we get older, we lose flexibility, mobility, and stability if we do not continue to stay active. All three of these are important to having a strong golf swing, and who doesn’t want to improve their golf game? Flexibility is one of the first things we begin to lose as part of the aging process, which leads to decreased mobility. Think about when you were younger and how active you were. You need to “USE IT OR LOSE IT”.
Flexibility is defined as “the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to lengthen passively through a range of motion”, whereas mobility is “the ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion”. Having strong stabilizing muscles is key to good posture and injury prevention.
Improved mobility establishes a solid base for efficient power production. You will also need stability, balance, strength, and muscular endurance. There are many exercises and stretches that can increase all of these. Here are a few of my favorites!
Why it works: The twisting of the lower body stretches the muscles and tendons in the hips and lower back. This simulates the torque put on the hip region at the top of the backswing and during the follow-through.
How to: Lie faceup on the ground with your arms to your sides, your knees bent, feet wider than shoulderwidth apart, heels on the ground. Twist your legs to the left until they reach the ground, then twist them to the right. Continue alternating sides while keeping your shoulders on the ground and your core engaged.
Why it works: The resistance of the stretch bands against your legs activates and strengthens the glutes, which are key to maintaining a stable base when you swing, especially at faster speeds.
How to: Place a mini band around your ankles. Walk forward in small steps, keeping your knees bent and alternating the elbows, driving back with each step. Keep your back straight and your knees over your toes.
Why it works: The resistance of the stretch bands against your legs activates and strengthens the hips, groin, quads and glutes, all key to maintaining a stable base when you swing, especially at faster speeds.
How to: Place a mini band around your ankles. Walk sideways in small steps, keeping your legs fairly straight and alternate the elbows, driving back with each step. Keep your back straight and your knees over your toes.
KNEE HUGS
Why it works: A terrific exercise for maintaining your posture throughout your swing. This stretches the glutes, the hamstrings, and the hip flexors.
How to: Stand with your back straight and your arms at your sides. Lift your right foot off the ground and squat down on your left leg. Grab below the knee with your hands and pull your right knee as close to your chest as you can while contracting your left glute for two seconds. Return to the start and switch sides. Keep your chest up and contract the glute of the leg you are standing on.
T-HIP
Why it works: Stretches the hips and adductors.
How to: Stand with both feet on the ground and place your weight on your left leg. Hold a support with your left hand. A chair is sufficient. Hinge through your left hip by dropping your chest and lifting your right leg to the ceiling to create a “T” with your body. While holding on with your left hand, open your hips and shoulders toward the ceiling until you feel a stretch on the outside of your left hip. Hold for two seconds. Rotate your hips and shoulders down and across your body until you feel a stretch on the outside of your left hip. Finish one side before starting the other. Move your hips and shoulders as one unit. Keep the standing leg slightly bent at the knee and keep your back leg lifted toward the sky throughout the movement.
Why it works: One of the best stretches ever! This stretch works the hip internal rotators and hip external rotators at the same time.
How to: Sit on the floor with both your front and back leg bent to 90 degrees. The angle in the groin created by both legs should be 90 degrees as well as the angle of the ankle as it relates to the shin. Take the hand on the same side as the front leg and place it on the ground next to your hip, with the inside of your arm facing forward, fingers pointing back. This will keep the spine straight and chest open. Tip your pelvis forward to increase the curve in your lower back. Don’t round your back. Lean forward if you can. Hold the position for 10-20 seconds.
There are many more strengthening and mobility exercises that can be performed to help you with your golf game. We now have an amazing stretch cage for use at the Fitness Center to help you with your flexibility and a Balance & Mobility class offered Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
If you need direction on how to perform the exercises, stop by the Fitness Center and I can give you a hand.

With your help we raised over $40,000 for our local charities. Additionally, we had a successful food drive, school supply drive, and of course, the toy drive! “LFWMH is proud to support the men and women who have willingly put their lives on the line or have given their lives for our country. They are the REAL heroes, and we honor them by working together to raise funds for the services they and their families so desperately need.”
Did you know the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes (LFWMH) was formed right here in Hampton Hall by a group of visionaries who learned of a need after meeting a neighbor’s son who had experienced a tragic accident while serving in Afghanistan? That was 12 years ago and as a 501(c)3 nonprofit this all-volunteer group has raised $1,739,000 in support of programs for post-9/11 combat wounded military heroes and their families. These programs include providing service canines to assist those with PTSD, scholarships for children of Special Operators killed in combat, and mortgage-free homes just to name a few. LFWMH is proud to support the men and women who have willingly put their lives on the line or have given their lives for our country. They are the REAL heroes, and we honor them by working together to raise funds for the services they and their families so desperately need.
But these fundraising events don’t just happen. Each year it takes about 200 volunteers, of which approximately 150 are residents of Hampton Hall. These volunteers won’t brag about their efforts but spend untold hours to assure they host successful events in support of the heroes and their families. Jack
Pohlman,as a former volunteer and now tournament
participant, and Lynda Halpern, as a new volunteer, recognize their roles are small compared to those of the Board Members, committee leaders, and many of the other volunteers, but feel great pride in their involvement in LFWMH.
So, who are Jack and Lynda and why did they decide to get involved?
According to Jack, “In May 2018, I volunteered to help on the Military Liaison Committee as an escort for the 60+ heroes who were invited to participate in a round of golf with 200+ other golfers and an evening of recognition. I was fortunate to have the same experience the following year. Then in both 2021 and 2022, after the COVID “break” in 2020, I participated as part of a foursome and was able to enjoy a day of golf with one of the heroes. I valued my time as a volunteer as it was an experience I’ll never forget because I was lucky to spend time with a real HERO. This will be my third year as a tournament participant and I look forward to playing again this spring.
As a recent retiree, Lynda was enjoying a variety of activities both within Hampton Hall and in the local community but felt that she wasn’t “giving back” to her community. A chance meeting at the Community Club Fair last July changed that. She says, “I met a Board Member at the LFWMH table and signed up to volunteer without knowing too much about the organization or what they needed help doing. I received a call the next day and after sharing a great deal of information, it was suggested I watch a video of Master Sergeant Todd Nelson who was the inspiration for the establishment of LFWMH. After drying my tears, I knew this was the organization for me. I still have a lot to learn but am excited to be working with this great group of volunteers and meeting our heroes.”
