Football Tournament
Success
The U10A and U11A teams bring home the silverware The Twickenham Prep Tournament saw our U10A team competing against seven other schools. It was a great day as we were unbeaten, winning six of the matches and drawing one. Crucially, we managed to beat the hosts Twickenham Prep School in a tough final game, with Cormac Harvey scoring the winning goal to place us at the top of the table. Goalkeeper Daniel Gray and the back line kept a clean sheet throughout the day as Hampton Prep scored 15 goals, including a 6-0 win against St Philip’s Prep School, Kensington. The Hampton Prep U11 Football Tournament also displayed the talent of our players. The first match of the group stage was a thrilling game against Claremont Fan Court School which Hampton won 6-3 to make a great start. The U11s then notched up another three wins before drawing against our annual visitors from Guernsey, Elizabeth College School, and then losing to Newland House School.
Hampton finished second in their group, which was enough to take them into the next round of the competition where they faced the winners of the second group, King’s College School, Wimbledon. The match looked like it was going to end with a goalless draw until Savan Soni broke the deadlock with a golden goal, giving Hampton a 1-0 victory to secure them a place in the final against Surbiton High Boys’ Prep School. Throughout the final, both sides had chances to score until Harry Wilson’s late brace earned Hampton a 2-0 win. The Hampton players were delighted with their performance, which kept the trophy in the Hampton Prep cabinet for the third year running. Reporters: Thomas Deedman (Year 5) Harry Wilson (Year 6)
AUTUMN TERM 2017
THE HAMPTON PRE-PREP & PREP SCHOOL MAGAZINE
A word from
The Headmaster
Welcome to ROAR! – the very first edition of our new School magazine Lions roar for all sorts of reasons and our friendly lion cub, the symbol we have adopted to represent our School, is no exception. Given all the wonderful work and effort from our pupils last term he certainly has a lot to roar about! We will aim to publish our new style magazine three times during the course of each academic year, one issue per term. I am thrilled to see that this first edition is packed full of the exciting endeavours that so many of our pupils have clearly loved throwing themselves into over the last term. It was an exceptionally busy few weeks and the pupils’ accomplishments have made us all proud. It is a real pleasure for us to share them with you and I do hope that you will enjoy reading the magazine as much as I have.
Tim Smith Headmaster
Assembly Themes Responsibility In the first half of the term, the theme of our assemblies was responsibility, and how everyone has their own responsibilities. Teachers’ assemblies gave us an insight into the responsibilities that they and others have, ranging from taking care of a cat to grandparent duties. Class assemblies focused on the meaning of the word responsibility, with Mr Henderson’s class rounding off the half term with a look back at all the assemblies. Reporter: Charlie Gavin (Year 6)
Freedom For the second half of the Autumn Term, our focus was on the concept of freedom. Many different aspects of freedom such as the freedom to vote, to have equal rights, to enjoy equal pay, to an education, and even the freedom to live, were explored. The work of key figures such as Nelson Mandela and Emily Pankhurst was explored through class assemblies. It was also fitting, that in the half term of Remembrance Day, we were able to focus on the freedom that we enjoy today because of those who lost their lives in conflict to protect the freedom and rights of others. The Head of Pre-Prep What a wonderful term we have had in Pre-Prep - our girls and boys in Kindergarten to Year 2 have been industrious from the word go. The term was punctuated by various events and outings - a trip to Pizza Express, a visit to our local bakers and a 1950s day to name but a few. Golden Time, not surprisingly, remains a highlight of our week. The children have the opportunity to pursue a wide variety of activities - this term we have had disco dancing, pizza making, puppet shows and, a firm favourite, toast and hot chocolate. The children treasure this special time together and enjoy forging new friendships across the year groups. Our Christmas festivities were wonderful. First, came the combined Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 performance of The Ordinary Ox, and then we enjoyed Kindergarten’s Donkey for Sale. We felt immensely proud of all our young actors – what amazing performances from them all!
Imogen Murphy Head of Pre-Prep
As part of topic work this term, the girls and boys in Year 2 took a step back in time to experience life in a 1950s classroom. Overnight, their room underwent a rapid transformation and the children arrived in School to find blackboards, tables in rows and not a rubber in sight. Dressed in 1950s clothes, adults and children alike embraced the theme, sampled foods from the era (interestingly, Spam was a popular choice!) and some even commented on how much they enjoyed writing lines!
wonderful work Year 3 Arrivals It has been a busy term for the new boys in Year 3. As well as many interesting classroom activities such as shape hunting, skeleton building and creating shoeboxes for their class book Flora and Ulysses, the boys enjoyed two trips. First, a teambuilding day at Hampton School, which involved crossing a ‘shark infested’ river, a tightrope walk and a plank-lifting relay. Later in the term, the boys went to the British Museum to learn more about the Romans. The trip saw the boys identify emperors, look at Roman jewellery and animal depictions, and enjoy viewing some rare and impressive statues and coins. Our new boys have really enjoyed their start to life at Hampton Prep and are looking forward to an exciting 2018.
Year 4 Trips Our Year 4 pupils went on two trips for their science and humanities topics. Bug hunting was the object of the day as the boys went pond dipping, insect hunting and on wildlife walks during a science trip to The Stockyard in Bushy Park. In November, pupils toured the local area. It was a fascinating insight into the history and geography of buildings in Hampton.
Open Homework Exhibition Open Homework Week always results in some fascinating work. This year, all pupils from Reception to Year 5 got to work on a homework project relevant to the number seven. There were many great ideas on show, from football number seven stars, to the seven dwarves, to the seven deadly sins! Teachers were very impressed with the children’s creativity. At the end of Open Homework Week, the pupils’ work was displayed in an exhibition for parents and visitors.
Poetry Party This term the Prep held its first Poetry Party. Boys in Years 4 to 6 were invited to attend with a parent or older sibling, and have a go at some light-hearted, slightly lateral thinking, collaborative poetry-writing. Several poetry themed stations were set up including Maths Raps, Witches’ Brew Reinventions and Laugh-out Loud Limericks. All were manned by our ever-enthusiastic English Department plus some willing volunteers. Boys and parents visited three stations before coming together and performing their favourite piece in a poetry slam.
Maths Competition Four boys from Year 6: Adam Gaunt, Asa Jennings, Gaurav Kamath and Kessan Konsesakumar were chosen to represent the School in the ‘National Young Mathematicians’ Award.’ We were marked on our answers, presentation and teamwork. It was hard but we enjoyed working as a team and qualified for the next round. We are currently waiting to see if we have made it to the final of the competition, which will be held in Cambridge. The Pre-Prep made lots of delicious food over the Autumn Term. Crispy bread rolls, cakes and gingerbread men all looked scrumptious but (sadly for the staff) were taken home for tea. Our Reception children enjoyed a pizza making session at Pizza Express. Meanwhile, our Kindergarten children went to a local bakery to buy a gingerbread reindeer.
MUSIC & DRAMA
Celebrations at St Mary’s Church The Harvest Festival was a great way to bring all the children together at the start of the year. The singing and readings were excellent. The event helped us to raise money for Planting Promise, a charity which aims to provide free, high quality education to children in Sierra Leone.
The Christmas Carol Concert, which included poems, carols and songs performed beautifully by the boys, was a special evening for all involved and epitomised the spirit of Christmas. Thank you to our Music Department for all the work that went into staging such a wonderful event.
Informal Concerts Over the term, the Music Department has organised a number of informal concerts to give pupils a chance to perform their chosen instrument in front of their parents in the Hall. Boys of all abilities played instruments ranging from the piano to the trombone, demonstrating the progress they have made in their music lessons.
Choir Appearances The choir has been kept busy from the onset this academic year with a range of performances throughout the term. They made their first appearance of the year at the Harvest Festival with a gentle and thoughtful rendition of The Lord Is My Shepherd. In December, the boys visited the Hampton and LEH Senior Citizens’ Tea Party to delight the attendees with a variety of numbers ranging from the African Fanga Alafia to Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk.
Christmas was a busy time with the boys entertaining audiences at Marling Court Residential Home and the School Christmas Fair. Their rendition of Hurry Santa at the Carol Service was a fitting end to a busy term and the boys are looking forward to a rest before preparations begin in earnest for their appearance at the Voice in a Million concert in the spring.
Pre-Prep Christmas Production
The Ordinary Ox The Ordinary Ox was an enchanting production performed by enthusiastic Reception to Year 2 children. It told the story of two siblings who are awoken on Christmas Eve by their toys. The children listen and watch as each toy describes what Christmas means to them, but the only one who knows the real story of Christmas is an ordinary looking ox.
Kindergarten Christmas Production
Donkey for Sale All the Pre-Prep staff were exceptionally proud of Kindergarten’s performance of Donkey for Sale, a nativity story told from a donkey’s perspective. Beautiful singing, acting and playing of musical instruments ensured that the audience was enraptured, and set the perfect tone for the festive season.
SPORT & PE National Champion Year 6 pupil Tom Clark is celebrating after being crowned the National Tumbling Champion in his age group After winning the South East regional finals, Tom competed in the final of the National Development Programme (NDP) tumbling championships in Telford. After executing three tumbles of varying degrees of difficulty, Tom was awarded the Gold medal in the level 3 category. He says it was brilliant to achieve the top award. Tom, who trains for 10 hours a week, has now been promoted to the Elite Tumbling Squad at Spelthorne Gymnastics Club in Sunbury.
Manchester Football Tour 2017 20 boys from Year 5 were lucky enough to earn selection to go on a football tour to Manchester. We were all excited and ready for the weekend. First, we received a Hampton Prep bobble hat so that the teachers could spot us! Then, we were off! First stop was Altrincham Prep School to play some games. The A Team match was very tight and we drew 1-1.
The B Team also had a tight encounter, with a valiant comeback from 2-0 ultimately cancelled out by a lastminute Altrincham winner. After an evening of bowling, we woke up on Saturday, excited for the day ahead. First, we went to the National Football Museum, before heading onto Old Trafford. We had a Q&A with a tour guide before settling into our seats for the match against Newcastle United. An early Newcastle goal made the game exciting, but Manchester United came back for a 4-1 win! Finally, after a five-hour drive home, we got back at midnight, happy, tired, and ready for bed. Reporter: Harry Swain (Year 5)
PE Report - First Term In the first half of the term, PE staff ran fitness tests to help boost fitness levels and provide an active start to the year. The tests included press-ups and a five-minute run. PE teachers were pleased to note improved times across the board after the boys were re-tested six weeks later. In the second-half of term, pupils worked on their throwing and catching skills using various different shapes and sizes of ball. They also played games to improve hand-eye coordination. One game in particular, bench ball, was very popular and played in a competitive spirit.
House Competitions In September, pupils made the short trip to the Hampton Open Air Pool for the annual Hampton Prep Swimming Gala. The event, which had been cancelled the previous year due to stormy conditions, promised to be an exciting day of swimming. Notable individual performances came from Max Beesley who broke the Year 3 backstroke record and Tristan Thorpe who set a Year 6 record for all four strokes. Prep boys also enjoyed the House Football Tournament, which involved all pupils in Years 3 to 6. At the end of a competitive and exciting event, which saw 36 games played overall, Lancaster topped the table, with Tudor finishing as the runners-up.
Award Winning Junior Safety Officers It was an exciting term for our new Prep Junior Safety Officers: Monty Hunt, Luigi de Lellis Brockwell, Ben Rowe, Raphael Taylor and Ben Wheeler. The group collected the STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe in London) Excellence Award for pupil-led projects, which was presented in recognition of last year’s achievements. This year’s team have many events lined up for 2018. They are currently editing a rap song on safety and the environment, which they will show to the School this term. The boys are also awarding excellence slips to all pupils who arrive at School via the Carlisle Park gate, thus reducing congestion on Gloucester Road.
