Years 5 and 6 wowed a delighted audience with their production of the Greek tragedy Orpheus at The Hammond Theatre. In the legendary tale, Orpheus (played by Charlie Gavin) attempts to rescue Eurydice (Kiran Broekhuizen) from the Underworld, after she is murdered by Aristaeus (Adam Gaunt). To rescue his love, Orpheus travels through the Underworld where both humans and gods are deeply touched by his sorrow and grief. Thanks to some help along the way and the beautiful music of his lyre, Orpheus manages to rescue Eurydice, only to break the gods’ rules and see his love fade away again. In our version, the gods take pity on the couple and allow Orpheus and Eurydice to live happily ever after. Congratulations to all involved in this wonderful production!
SPRING TERM 2018
THE HAMPTON PRE-PREP & PREP SCHOOL MAGAZINE
A word from
The Headmaster It is my great pleasure to be writing an introductory piece for the second edition of our termly magazine ROAR! We are proud to say that we have produced an even larger issue this time around. Rightly so I say, as we all recognise just how much the pupils across the Pre-Prep and Prep managed to accomplish during the course of the Spring Term. I was really impressed with the terrific levels of energy on display from our pupils. Music, art and drama featured heavily and our very first Science Fair was a great success. The weather cut short our residential trips for Years 3 and 4 but, however much Mother Nature threw at us, it did not dampen our spirits for sport. The focus shifted to rugby for the boys in the Prep and there was plenty of enthusiasm for the game by boys at every level. I hope you all enjoy reading this edition as much as I have.
Tim Smith Headmaster
Our Assemblies This term, our assemblies focused on the themes of making and breaking rules. Some teachers and classes chose to focus on occasions when it is correct to break the rules, such as when facing grave danger. Others chose to focus on when breaking the rules had severe consequences, and what lessons could be learned from those mistakes. In the ‘making the rules’ side of half-term, teachers and classes approached the topic in a variety of ways. Assemblies ranged from breaking down the rules of our favourite games, to what rules individuals should make for themselves to get the best out of life. The children gained much from the assemblies and a range of useful lessons for the future.
The Head of Pre-Prep Spring is always a hugely enjoyable time of year here at Hampton Pre-Prep and this term has been no exception. Although we saw almost every possible type of weather, spirits were not dampened in the least! In fact, we had the greatest of fun engaging in trips off-site, donning our Book Day costumes, cross-country running in the park, scooter training by the Junior Safety Officers and, on the last day of term, parading in Easter bonnets. One of the highlights of the term for me was the arrival of the ‘Living Eggs’. This programme is all about giving the children the chance to see new life entering the world. Viewing a chick emerging from its shell is truly a sight to behold. We never have to wait too long for the process to begin in order to experience the awe and wonder of the hatching process. Most importantly, the children also have the opportunity to take care of the chicks once they have hatched – all important life lessons, I believe.
Imogen Murphy Head of Pre-Prep
Pre-Prep The best part of Easter for some is the traditional egg hunt and it has to be said, here at Hampton Pre-Prep, we love a good springtime hunt when the Easter Bunny has visited! Great fun ensued as the children rushed around searching for as many eggs as they could possibly find and, of course, everyone was rewarded with a delicious treat at the end of the hunt!
THE L.I.O.N. AWARD Leadership, Independence & Opportunities to Nurture The L.I.O.N. Award, introduced in 2016, develops and stretches the boys in Years 3 to 5 by encouraging them to take risks, explore new opportunities and have a positive effect on the community around them. The individual aspects of the Award: Independent Project, Residential, Skilled Activity, Creativity Portfolio and Community Service, empower pupils to combine teamwork with individuality. The boys self-evaluate, and are evaluated by their peers and teachers, hopefully learning important lessons for future endeavours.
Year 3 Charity Fair The James Hall was buzzing with excitement for the annual Year 3 L.I.O.N. Charity Fair. The year group set up 15 fun stalls, all setting a range of challenges for other pupils to pit their wits against. The Year 3 boys raised more than £300 for the School’s chosen charities Planting Promise and Senahasa Trust.
Climate Week Climate Week saw Years 1 to 6 focus on ways in which we can improve the way we recycle, in particular looking at plastics and food waste. The issues surrounding this important topic were explored during humanities, life skills and science lessons. Boys in the Prep produced a range of projects on climate change and recycling.
General Knowledge Championships Four boys from the Prep School: Harrison Gilbert, Rory Cooper and brothers, Raphael and Nathaniel Taylor, were selected to represent the School at the First Round of the National KS2 General Knowledge Championships. The Hampton team displayed an impressive and broad range of knowledge and took the lead for much of the competition. They eventually finished in second position after a fun and stimulating day.
Across the term, Years 3 to 6 each held their own cake sale to raise money for our charities: Planting Promise, Senahasa Trust, Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, Water Aid and Spear. Every boy brought in a range of delicious cakes, which were soon snapped up by pupils and teachers. Over ÂŁ600 was raised in total for the chosen charities.
TRIPS & VISITS
Year 5 Trip to Reading Museum
Year 4 Trip to The Golden Hinde
As part of their humanities topic focusing on 19th Century Britain, Year 5 boys visited the Victorian-themed Reading Museum. Dressed in traditional Victorian clothes, the boys headed upstairs for activities which included a very strict 1800s school lesson, and the chance to look at, and dress up in, workers’ clothes from that era.
This term, Year 4 visited The Golden Hinde in London. Whilst Sir Francis Drake’s original ship had rotted away, this replica vessel has also sailed round the world! We were shown around the ship by a captain dressed in a Tudor costume. The captain made it fun and interesting with lots of gruesome facts and telling us about the hard life that the ship’s crew had to endure. My score for the trip would be 10/10. Reporter: Dylan Martin (Year 4)
Year 4 trip to Ufton Court On arrival, a lady dressed in Tudor clothes told us about the fascinating history of the house. It used to be a Tudor Mansion and it was ginormous! After that, the lady kindly led us around and showed us all of the gardens. There were lots of varieties of flowers and herbs, which were covered in snow.
She told us to look out for secret passages and I found a secret door and a box with writing on it! We then went to the lake and saw the ice room, before we did orienteering in the snow and wind. After we had seen our rooms, made our beds and had our dinner, we did a teambuilding game called seeker and watched a movie before lights out. The next morning something terrible happened! We were told that because of the snow we would have to leave early. But we still had time to fit in archery and wattling, which meant we could make a basket just in time for Mother’s Day. Reporter: Omer Olcer (Year 4)
Year 3 Trip to Hooke Court After a snowy start, Year 3 boarded the coach ready to embark on their adventure to Dorset. After a break at Monkey World for lunch, we arrived at Maiden Castle where we climbed up the ancient hill fort and heard stories from our guide.
The next morning, the boys were thrilled to wake up to a blanket of snow outside. We managed to fit in clay pot making and cooking Roman food before the snow got too heavy and we needed to return to School.
Once we arrived at Hooke Court, the boys unpacked their bags and made their beds. After enjoying dinner, it was time for Roman games where, to everyone’s delight, Mr Zander dressed up as a solider.
On the journey we enjoyed a picnic on the coach before arriving back safely. Reporter: Miss Wakeling
Year 2 Trip to the Florence Nightingale Museum
Year 6 Trip to The Holly Lodge Centre
After arriving at the museum, we hung up our bags and met our guide ‘Florence’ who called us Victorian children. Florence took us through the museum to do a talk and then told us our activities. First, I did a hospital timeline (plotting changes to hospitals through time). Secondly, we did a clipboard activity (looking at Florence’s earlier life) and lastly, we smelt some herbs (used in medicines in the past). Stephen and Izzy dressed up (as a soldier and as a nurse) and after that we went home. I had a great day.
Year 6 travelled to The Holly Lodge Centre to take part in numerous thought-provoking emergency situation activities.
Reporter: Fred Owen (Year 2)
Each task was designed to test how sensibly and efficiently the boys would react when thrust into challenging circumstances. The Prep pupils had to assess whether to help the victims directly or call the emergency services.

MUSIC & DRAMA
The 33-strong Hampton Prep Choir travelled to Wembley Arena to take part in the 2018 Voice in a Million concert. Founded in 2009, the project aims to raise awareness for the plight of millions of children worldwide who are orphaned, abandoned or separated from their birth parents and in need of a loving family for life.
In front of more than 5,000 people, the Hampton Prep singers joined school choirs from across the country to sing hits including Hey Brother and Dancing in the Moonlight.

Epsom College Strings Day Seven of our most experienced string players participated in Epsom College’s String Day as part of a 150-strong string orchestra. The young musicians represented Hampton Prep magnificently, learning three new pieces in one day, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and some Harry Potter theme tunes.
WONDERFUL WORK
On World Book Day, all the children in the School dressed up as their favourite characters. From crayons, inspired by colouring books, to boys (and teachers) dressed up as The Boy in the Dress, and a whole array of superheroes, imagination and creativity filled the School corridors.
Year 5 Have a Blast As part of their science topics on forces and astronomy, Year 5 set off their own rockets in Carlisle Park. Using an effervescent vitamin C tablet as fuel, a reaction with water produced large amounts of carbon dioxide. The tablets were enclosed in a plastic container until the lid blew off and the CO2 provided propulsion to fire off the rockets. The boys had great fun and learned a lot from the thrilling experiment.
Reception Library Trip The Reception class took a spring walk to Hampton Library where they met the librarians, enjoyed an introduction to the library and learnt how to borrow books. The children were excited to discover that they can borrow plenty of picture books as well as non-fiction books, audiobooks and DVDs. The trip culminated in an exciting story session all about Elmer the Elephant after which the children chose books to share with their friends and bring back to School.Â
The Hampton Prep Houses battled once again for a prized disc in the House Poetry Competition. All 144 boys in the Prep read out a poem with six boys from each house being selected for the final. The budding poets bravely stood up in front of the whole School to read their compositions. There was unanimous agreement that the standard was as high as it has ever been. Special mention goes to Alfie Keller,
Ollie Roberts, Monty James, Harry Swain, Ben Rowe and Adam Gaunt who each won their categories, and in particular to Ben who was runner-up and Adam who took the title of overall champion. The competition was a three-way tie for victory between Windsor, York and Tudor. Well done to all the boys for taking part and many thanks to Susan Harding, LAMDA Assessor and Deputy Head of The Hall School, Wimbledon, who was our guest judge for the occasion.
Science Fair Hampton Prep’s first Science Fair was a great success. It was an opportunity to display science projects from all years at the Prep. Entries exceeded expectations, with displays filling the School Library and lining the corridors. The quality and range of projects on display, and the inventive ways in which they were demonstrated, was of the highest order and a reflection of the enthusiasm for science across the Prep.
Year 3 have been investigating fossils as part of our science topic. The pupils used magnifying glasses to see the more intricate details on a variety of different fossils and learnt in which rocks fossils are more likely to be found.
SPORT & PE
U10 & U11 Surrey Rugby Festival Success As the rugby term drew to a close, our U10A and U11A teams excelled in the Surrey Rugby Festival held at Cranmore School. Both teams won their groups, and the subsequent knockout games to finish top of the table. The U10s were undefeated in the competition to cap an unbeaten season under Mr Salt and Mr Zander. The U11s lost their opening game but showed real character to win their remaining pool games and take the group on points difference. They completed the tournament with a win over King’s House School. The day brought to a close an outstanding year for Hampton Prep’s senior rugby teams.
Chess Championship
Lions Football Trials
A total of 54 players entered the Prep School Chess Knockout Tournament, with Henry Fry and Gaurav Kamath surpassing all to reach the final.
Following trials for the Prep Schools’ Lions teams in November, Daniel Gray, Alessandro Tafuro, Savan Soni, Thomas Deedman, Charlie Gavin and Harry Wilson earned selection for the Development Squad. The boys will attend the prestigious Gothia World Youth Cup in Sweden this July.
This was Henry’s first final, having knocked out 2016 and 2017 finalist Kessan Konesakumar. Gaurav is an old hand after clinching victory in the previous two years. Despite a fierce contest, Gaurav’s experience paid dividends once again as he made it three titles in a row. A fitting end to his last year at the School.
Dan Abraham, former National Prep Schools Head Coach, who was involved in the selection process, congratulated the boys on their achievements: “It will be an amazing experience for them and one that will develop their football and their confidence both on and off the pitch. With over 500 children nominated for the trials, the coaches had to turn away many players this year, so the boys deserve congratulations on this excellent achievement.”
Epsom Cross Country Two combined teams of Year 5 and Year 6 runners competed in the annual Prep Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Epsom College. Notable results include an outstanding performance from Jack Price, who finished fourth out of over 200 runners in his race.
C & D Rugby Festival The inaugural Hampton Prep Rugby Festival focused on boys who had predominantly played in the C and D teams in Years 4 to 6 this year. The tournament involved six teams from three local schools. With the emphasis on participation and enjoyment, the tournament celebrated the hard work of the players over the course of this term. Despite very challenging weather, the boys tried hard and showed plenty of determination in testing conditions. A lot of fun was had by all.
House Cross Country & Rugby House Cross Country coincided with the arrival of the Beast from the East, which brought snow and sub-zero temperatures. All the boys in the Prep took part in the races producing some fantastic performances. The winners were: Year 1, Finn Timba; Year 2, Teddy Clarke; Year 3, Rocco Freedman; Year 4, Marcus Solomon; Year 5, Thomas Deedman and Year 6, Jack Price. Many congratulations to them all! Later in the term, the House Rugby competition brought out every ounce of competitiveness in the boys. Although Lancaster seized victory again, there were no easy games for any House. It was great to see the boys put their heart and soul into each and every match.
