ROAR Summer 2018

Page 1

Wellbeing Day At the start of the Summer Term, the School celebrated its first ever Wellbeing Day.

Organised by Mr Dean Richards, in his final term at the School, the day brought together the Pre-Prep & Prep for various workshops, seminars and exercises that involved a large number of the teachers showing the pupils different ways to look after themselves and be positive. Workshops took place on sleep, nutrition, online safety, managing defeat and anxiety, team building, and physical challenges and all the children from Reception to Year 6 participated in a mini-marathon to raise money for charity. On a day about positivity and brightness, there could not have been better weather for the boys and girls to learn valuable life lessons. Perhaps the most valuable lesson of all came from teacher Mr James Shone who gave an inspiring and moving presentation based upon the notion ‘I can and I am.’ The message being that people should look at themselves and their prospects in as positive a way as possible. It was a special day, and with the affirmative effects running throughout this term, it is fitting that this opens our final edition of ROAR for the 2017-2018 academic year.

SUMMER TERM 2018

THE HAMPTON PRE-PREP & PREP SCHOOL MAGAZINE

A word from

The Headmaster The Summer Term is a very busy one for us all. We enjoyed a successful first Wellbeing Day, there have been plenty of cricket fixtures, Sports Day was as triumphant as ever and music and drama featured heavily too. Inevitably, we are all thinking of Year 6 at this time of the year as they will be looking forward to a Summer of quiet yet curious contemplation of what Year 7 will bring for them at their senior schools in September. It has been terrific to see these boys enjoying the variety of events and activities on offer as part of their Leavers’ Programme. I believe they have all grown in confidence, particularly over the Summer Term, and I feel certain they will all be able to throw themselves into the enjoyment and challenges Year 7 will bring – lucky them! We have also been saying our somewhat mournful goodbyes to departing colleagues. It has been humbling and uplifting in equal measure to celebrate Mr Richards’ exemplary 25 year service to our School before he departs to head up a school of his own. He will be sorely missed by us all.

Tim Smith Headmaster

Our Assemblies

This term’s assemblies focussed on the themes of Hostility and Hospitality. During the first half-term, Forms and teachers delved into many aspects of the word ‘hostility’. Whether it was conflicts, hostility in everyday life or how to respond positively, there were a wide variety of different lessons to take from assemblies on the subject.

In the second half-term, hospitality became the theme. Forms and teachers looked at how we should make people feel welcome, not just in situations at home, but at school and in society. The term ended with a typically emotional Leavers’ Assembly as we said goodbye to our departing Year 6 boys and to the staff departing at the end of this year.

The Head of Pre-Prep We have had some magical moments this term in Pre-Prep, with a full and varied programme of outings off-site from Kindergarten to Year 2, Sports Day, the Art Exhibition, and the Summer Concert. It is always hugely rewarding to receive positive comments about the children’s behaviour when they are ‘out and about’, but also to see the awe and wonder on the children’s faces as they experience things for the very first time, whether this be at Winchester Science Museum, The Living Rainforest or Bocketts Farm. I should like to take this opportunity to wish all the boys and girls in Year 2 every success and happiness as they move from the infant to junior phase in their learning journey – exciting times ahead for all! It is safe to say we have absolutely loved their company and will miss them greatly. I would like to wish you all a very restful summer break.

Imogen Murphy Head of Pre-Prep

Reception Trip to Bocketts Farm Reception had a wonderful day when they travelled to Bocketts Farm to see the animals.

The children loved the bumpy tractor ride, seeing the sweetest two-week old foal, cheering on the pigs in their race and stroking a tiny mouse called Minnie! The boys behaved beautifully and were a real credit to the School. Afterwards, the boys shared what they liked best…

When Reception went down to the farm … I saw Mrs Plum the Pig (Wilfred)

And tur keys ma ke strange noises I saw the cow and (Raphae l) The mouse was very cuddly, I loved the baby and its tail felt like snake horse (Arjun) actor skin (Freddie) I liked the tr fun ride, it was pig race e th w sa I I saw a baby horse and ppy and I felt ha and I had a lot of it was sweet (Shay) h) d (Aniru fun (Jonah) I loved the bouncy cushion (Arthur)

Year 1 Trip to Winchester Science Museum One of the highlights of the year for Year 1 was the trip to Winchester Science Museum. After having an explosive and exciting ‘Rockets and Forces’ workshop, Year 1 made their own hydraulic rockets which they launched outside, watching them fly high in the air! The weather was kind, so after exploring all the scientific activities, they played on the outdoor adventure playground. Afterwards, they went into the Planetarium to watch an animation all about the planets in the Solar System. It was a fabulous day! Thank you to our parent helpers for all their support on the day.

Reading Café

Charity Book Swap

Throughout the term the English department ran ‘Reading Café’ events for Years 3-5.

On a hectic day which had seen the teachers’ cake sale, and a ‘Breaking The Rules’ themed day, the boys were relieved to cut through the chaos with a Charity Book Swap.

Eating cookies in a café-style set-up in the James Hall, the boys were able to sample an eclectic mix of titles new and old from the Library. The aim of the event was to help the boys develop a passion for an author or perhaps a series of books they had previously not considered.

All the boys donated books, and were able to select a second-hand book of their choice from the donations. Thank you to all the boys for their generosity, and the staff who helped on the day.

Hosting of the National KS2 Maths Challenge Hampton Prep had the pleasure of hosting two teams apiece from four visiting Prep Schools and competed against them in the Quiz Club National KS2 Maths Competition. Our two teams did very well finishing in 1st and 3rd place. Later in the competition, Hampton Prep also hosted the regional semi-final. Unfortunately they did not progress past this stage, but very well done to all the boys involved.

Nutrition Day

It was a Friday of flavours for Hampton Prep as the boys enjoyed tasting, making and learning about food on our first ever Nutrition Day. The day began with Chef Faye, from Chartwells Catering, giving an assembly which focussed on the importance of getting your five-a-day and eating a balanced diet. Following that, our Junior Safety Officers ran a ‘Smoothie Bike Workshop’. Boys who had travelled to School in a safe and sustainable way were able to make their own smoothies. James Phillips, Samuel Corkery and Guillaume Gargour (all Year 3) earned the top prize for the best smoothies based on the taste, look of the smoothie and variety of fruits and vegetables. Finally, our Year 6 boys were given a presentation by Faye and Paul Butt, Head Chef at Hampton School. The boys learned how to make a range of quick and easy foods including a pea and mint dip and gazpacho.

TRIPS & VISITS YEAR 3 AND 4 TRIP TO LONDON ZOO After arriving in London on the train we had to walk a little to reach the Zoo. When we got there, we were taken to the Education Centre, where we were shown animals’ skulls and taught about how their teeth had evolved with their diets. We were then able to see all the animals in the Zoo. There was an amazing variety of different creatures on show. From the beautiful corn snake, the stripy zebras, cheeky wild African dogs and scary lions, to farm animals like pigs, donkeys and fluffy rabbits. We even saw penguins! My favourite exhibit was the gibbon enclosure, which was really funny because the baby kept annoying the older ones! After a trip to the gift shop we sadly had to go home, but we all had great fun on the trip. Reporter: Thomas Willis (Year 4)

YEAR 5 TRIP TO PGL, LIDDINGTON

It was an earlier than usual wake-up call for Year 5 as they headed for the PGL site at Liddington for their first week-long residential trip. Our first stop was Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where we got to see the Mary Rose and HMS Victory. Just before 4pm we reached PGL, where we received a warm welcome from our Group Leader, Hayleigh. We had a jam-packed day on Tuesday, which included abseiling and aeroball. On Wednesday, we were fortunate to see some fascinating wildlife before more activities at PGL. After another busy day on Thursday, we all got dressed in our coolest clothes, gelled our hair, and attended the disco!

Before returning home we got to go on the zip wire and build our own camp, using survival skills we had learned over the week. I learnt a lot from this trip and got to know some of my year group a lot better. I would like to thank all the teachers who accompanied us on this amazing residential trip! Reporter: Max Duggan (Year 5)

Year 6 Trip to Twr Y Felin, St David’s Our residential trip to Twr Y Felin was a special experience for all of us in Year 6. There were times to play with friends, do amazing activities, and best of all, build friendships on a sunny week in Pembrokeshire. The activities we participated in were huge fun, with the opportunity to do climbing, kayaking, coasteering and play on the beach, but the most popular activity was surfing, for which we were blessed with ideal conditions.

It was very different to other trips, staying on a farm next to pigs and cows in nearby fields, and having cats and dogs roaming around the farmyard, but we all really enjoyed the experience. Towards the end of the trip we had a once-in-a-lifetime boat trip exploring Ramsey Island, an RSPB-protected Island, and finally visited the town of St David’s, where there were souvenir shops and a huge cathedral to see. Everyone had a great time and it was the best school trip I have ever been on! Reporter: Savan Soni (Year 6)

YEAR 2 TRIP TO THE LIVING RAINFOREST As part of the Year 2 humanities topic about Rainforests, the children had the chance to visualise what they had been learning at The Living Rainforest in Berkshire. They learned all about how plants and animals have adapted to living in the rainforest and saw lots of animals including poison dart frogs, pygmy marmosets, stingrays, mudskippers, Goeldi’s monkeys, Asian water dragons, snakes and even a bird-eating spider! The children were brilliant ambassadors for the School, asking thoughtful questions throughout the visit. As ever, we were very grateful to the parent helpers who gave up their time to come along and help us on the day.

ART & DT

Year 3 visit Tate Britain

An excited Year 3 set off for Tate Britain on a beautiful sunny day. Moving around the galleries in four small groups, they were able to confidently express their views and understandings on the paintings and sculptures they looked at with guidance from a member of staff. The boys were also pleasantly surprised as they were able to interact with Anthea Hamilton’s new exhibit The Squash. They thoroughly enjoyed having plenty of time to observe the different exhibits and offer their opinions on them.

Prep Art Exhibition

A selection of the very best pieces of artwork throughout this year were put on display for parents to view during the Prep Art Exhibition. Thank you to everyone who came and looked at the exhibition, and well done to all the boys whose artwork was featured.

MUSIC & DRAMA

s m o r P Following on from the terrific success of last year’s show, Hampton Prep hosted its second Picnic and Proms at The Hammond Theatre.

From traditional British hymns to modern classics, it was another great celebration of music, our Country and our School. Whether solo performances, singing in an ensemble or playing songs in the orchestra, every boy in the School was able showcase his talents and be involved in a joyful and spectacular event.

TUISHI PAMOJA A vibrant musical set in Africa, Tuishi Pamoja has a great message about diversity and friendship, and created a wonderfully uplifting and colourful spectacle as the end of year show for Years 3 and 4. Young giraffes and zebras are not allowed to associate with each other but - when lions attack – Raffi (Thomas McMonagle) and Remi (Elijah Wilkinson), and Zea (Luke Nunn) and Zuri (Daniel O’Sullivan Sanz), are separated from their herds and find themselves thrown together. At first they maintain their hostility towards each other, but with the help of some smart meerkats they learn to be friends.

When it is safe to return to their herds, they must deal with the prejudice of their parents. The children loved preparing and performing the pieces and poured all of their energy into learning their parts. Congratulations to all involved in another fantastic production.

SPORT & PE

HOUSE CRICKET It was another competitive House Cricket competition, with both the Blades and Lightning teams representing their Houses and playing in hard-fought matches. Lancaster came out on top after a tough battle with Windsor in the Year 5 and 6 competition, and overcame Tudor in the Year 3 and 4 matches later that week.

GUERNSEY TOUR 12 boys in Year 6 were selected for the 15th annual Cricket Tour to Guernsey. On Tour, they took on Elizabeth College Junior School, who themselves visit us for their annual football tour every September, and the U11 team that represent Guernsey. Hampton won two out of two against Elizabeth College, and chased down the representative team’s total with three balls to spare, to secure a clean sweep. Congratulations to all the players, but a special mention to Savan Soni and Nathaniel Taylor who both produced outstanding performances with the bat and ball respectively.

Year 3 and 5 C and D Cricket Festivals Following the success of our C and D Rugby Festivals last term, this term saw Hampton Prep’s first ever Cricket Festivals. The events focussed on players who had played in the C and D teams, but rather than Years 4-6, who had played last term, Years 3 and 5 fielded the teams. Boys enjoyed playing in these competitive fixtures and were able to show their hard work and progress.

Sports Day Hampton Pre-prep & Prep’s biggest sporting event, took place this term as the children aimed to win valuable points for their House and most importantly have fun in trying to win the magnificent Sports Day shield and earn another disc for their House. It was great to see winning performances and records tumble as well as seeing those children who do not typically enjoy or excel at sport fighting for every place and showing their determination and resilience. Lancaster ultimately pipped Tudor to victory, with a special mention to record breakers below: Cormac Harvey, Tudor (Year 5 75m) – 10.97 Thomas Deedman, Lancaster (Year 5 200m) – 30.69 Marcus Solomon, Lancaster (Year 4 800m) – 2.43.43 Gabriel Gargour, Lancaster (Year 4 600m) – 2.23.84 Tristan Thorpe, Tudor (Year 6 600m) – 2.13.09 Noah Hynes, Tudor (Year 3 300m) – 1.08.77 Rory Cooper, Tudor (Year 4 300m) – 1.01.59 Leil D’Souza, Lancaster (Year 5 300m) – 1.05.86 Well done to all those that took part in a great day.

MINI MARATHON As part of Wellbeing Day the School held a sponsored ‘mini marathon’. This involved all the children from Reception to Year 6 (and some spirited and enthusiastic members of staff!) running laps of Carlisle Park for 25 minutes. A massive £3,986.42 was raised for Planting Promise, Senahasa Trust and Sports Relief. A huge congratulations to all the boys for completing a challenging run, and many thanks to all those who generously donated.

CONGRATULATIONS

WINDSOR

After a fiercely competitive Disc Competition this year, Windsor were crowned House Cup Winners for a second consecutive year.

Thanks to an early burst at the start of this year, where they managed to win seven out of eight excellence slip week totals, Windsor earned a lead they did not relinquish.

Tudor also picked up discs for sporting achievements and had the highest total number of excellence slips accrued over the entire year.

Strong challenges came from our other Houses. Lancaster competed very well in sporting events and won the second highest number of discs. York could not quite capitalise on their very strong start, but pushed Windsor all the way.

But it was Windsor who came out on top, and congratulations must go to their House Captains, Nathaniel Taylor and Jacob Austin, and all of the boys who contributed to the House’s success.

Dean Richards

After a quarter of a century at the School, firstly as Head of Sport and subsequently Deputy Head (Pastoral), Dean Richards leaves Hampton Prep to take up the role of Headmaster at Claires Court Boys’ Junior School, Maidenhead. Joining Hampton in 1993, Mr Richards has lived through a period of significant change. He has been present through the School’s amalgamation with Hampton in 1999, its change to an 11+ School in 2004 and the subsequent change of name, following the move into the new Prep building at the Gloucester Road site in 2016. In his early years at the School Mr Richards turned Denmead, as it was then known, from a school not necessarily renowned for its sport, to one that excelled and stood above other local prep schools competing at both a local and national level. The positive effects are still being felt today, with the School boasting high quality games staff, teams of all ages and abilities achieving consistently good results, and all the boys continuing to really enjoy games sessions and matches. Since being appointed Deputy Head in 2003, Mr Richards has brought a hugely positive and caring approach to his pastoral position and given countless thought-provoking and fascinating assemblies for the boys. He has been responsible for driving and implementing several new initiatives in the School such as the very successful Junior Safety Officers, the L.I.O.N. Award and most recently Wellbeing Day.

He was instrumental in ensuring the smooth transition to 11+ and the successful process for building the new Prep Site and has been a huge part of the School integrating into the Hampton School Trust. Alongside Mr Richards’ positivity and love of the School, the consideration he has shown to both his colleagues and pupils has kept spirits high and the School has benefitted hugely from his approach. On behalf of all of the staff, parents and boys we would like to thank Mr Richards for the unmatched devotion, energy and commitment he has brought to the School over the past 25 years.

The Year 6 Leavers’ Programme The Year 6 Leavers’ Programme, enabled the boys to enjoy over 15 different events and trips in their final term at the School. With the 11+ completed, and boys’ places at their respective future schools confirmed, they were able to enjoy a plethora of interesting and unique experiences and activities. Activities such as a Mini Medics course, a Drama and Music Workshop and a self-defence course took place on site. Others, such as a trip to the Houses of Parliament, sailing at

Queen Mary Sailing Club, the Cricket Tour to Guernsey and of course, their residential trip to Twr Y Felin, will give them memories they will cherish for many years to come. The staff at Hampton Prep wish all the boys in Year 6 all the best as they move on to their secondary schools, and start new chapters in their lives.

STAFF LEAVERS Neil Campbell

Head of Maths Neil Campbell departs to take a break from teaching after five years in the role at our School. Different challenges lie ahead for him, in the guise of full-time fatherhood. Since arriving in 2013, Mr Campbell has made significant contributions to the School both inside and outside the classroom. Results at 11+ in maths have continued to rise, he has presided over our mathematicians’ best ever finishes in the National Young Mathematicians Award, Epsom College Maths challenge team event and a School record number of finalists in the Primary Maths Challenge. On the sports pitch, football was always Mr Campbell’s strength, and he led the U11As to win Hampton Prep’s very own tournament in 2015 and 2016 and most recently won the Twickenham Prep tournament with the U10As, before taking them on tour to Manchester. His presence in the staff room will be sorely missed. His dry sense of humour and clever, if at times corny puns have lit up break times, and his valuable knowledge in the fields of Manchester United and cake will be irreplaceable. Mr Campbell’s colleagues and pupils would like to thank him for all his efforts over the last five years and wish him good luck for the future.

Kaari Lehti-Crees

After four years as a Teaching Assistant for the Prep Kaari Lehti-Crees is moving on to work in more specialist dyslexic care. Since arriving in 2014, Mrs Lehti-Crees has provided important reading and spelling support lessons for many of the boys in the School, and has listened to almost every boy in the School (and many that have already left the School) read to her. Her warm, caring and positive nature will be greatly missed by boys and colleagues alike and we wish her all the best for the future.
