THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ Pupils from Hampton and Waldegrave School told the story of Dorothy and her trip down the Yellow Brick Road in the joint Lower School Musical. In a vibrant production, the 50-strong cast, ably supported by a superb orchestra, took the audience on a magical journey to the Emerald City as Dorothy made friends with Scarecrow, the Tinman and the cowardly Lion along the way.

Head of Drama, Mrs Jo James, congratulated the young cast on their wonderful performances: “Many of this young cast have never been on stage before. This has been a brilliant opportunity for them to learn and to shine.”

It is an exciting time for our Sixth Formers who are so far in receipt of 74 offers from global top-10 universities. An impressive 24 Hamptonians are holding offers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities including three of our Vice-Captains Koby Kalavannan (Medicine), Alex Fagan (Classics) and Joseph Helm (HSPS). Across the Year Group, 39 boys have offers from UCL and nine boys have conditional places at Imperial, universities which are currently ranked 8th and 9th in the world respectively. In keeping with our Sixth Formers’ remarkable array of talents and interests, university offers are across a wide range of disciplines. The Headmaster, Kevin Knibbs, warmly congratulated the class of 2020: “Our pupils and their dedicated teachers deserve the highest praise and these prestigious offers represent well-deserved recognition for their hard work.”

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

Hampton’s debaters are going from strength to strength, with an impressive haul of awards at the Magdalen College School MUN conference in Oxford. Representing Canada, Chad and South Africa, the boys debated topics such as the regulation of cryptocurrencies and sustainable water management. Eleven Hamptonians won individual delegate awards and the team of seven boys representing Canada took home the coveted team award.

TOP CHEMIST

Hampton Upper Sixth Former Varun Muralidharan has qualified for round two of the annual Chemistry Olympiad, which places him among the top 30 chemists in the country. Over 9,000 pupils across the country enter the notoriously difficult competition which tests young chemists’ knowledge and challenges them to think creatively in real-world situations. Varun now hopes to be chosen to represent the UK at the International Chemistry Olympiad later this year.

LION LEARNING

Hampton’s new Saturday morning school, Lion Learning, launched this term for boys and girls from eight local primary schools. The 12-month programme allows children to explore English, Maths, Philosophy and Science through a range of activities and lessons led by subject specialist teachers from Hampton School, supported by our Sixth Form mentors.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

Pupil campaign group Genocide80Twenty organised a number of awareness-raising projects to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The group held a special assembly to convey the message Never Again in which every Hamptonian held up an image of one of the 1.1 million Jewish people deported to Auschwitz. They also published a Holocaust Memorial Day newspaper and organised a talk by 90-year-old Auschwitz survivor Zigi Shipper. Earlier in the term, the Genocide80Twenty campaigners launched their own website and published a booklet, which included a powerful introduction from actor, Stephen Fry.

MODERN LANGUAGES Spanish, French, Mandarin and German pupils excelled across a range of national and regional debating competitions this term with three Hamptonians scoring in the top 9% in the prestigious international competition Juvenes Translatores. The School also enjoyed its first Modern Languages Week with a range of charismatic speakers who extolled the advantages of mastering a foreign language.

COOKING WEEK First Years have been let loose in the kitchen as part of their annual Cooking Week. The boys were given a ‘Homework Holiday’ and challenged to create mouth-watering menus for their friends and family. Culinary delights included curries, Italian delicacies and plenty of sweet treats.

BOOK CHARACTER DAY

Fictional characters ranging from Inspector Poirot to Robin Hood and Willy Wonka to Where’s Wally roamed the Hampton corridors on Second Year Book Character Day. Zach Kissell and Rohan Chen both won the prize for best costume. Zach spent the day as the Hungry Caterpillar from Eric Carle’s famous picture book, while Rohan dressed as Mr Tickle from Roger Hargreaves Mr Men series.

PENS DOWN DAY

Pens Down Day saw Hamptonians pack away their pencil cases and engage in a range of different activities from a tense game of bingo in Latin, hands-on geometry with Möbius strips in Maths and stop-motion videos on hydrocarbons in Chemistry.

The Sixth Form production of Simon Stephens’ contemporary drama Punk Rock told the story of a group of angst-ridden adolescents dealing with the stresses of exams. Directed by Dylan Little and Charlie Maddox and acted by a cast of nine Hampton and LEH pupils, the play explored challenging subject matter with nuance and talent.

ROCK CONCERT

Hamptonians from across the Year Groups performed a mix of rock classics and original numbers in this term’s rock concert. Highlights included Sixth Form band North by South West’s rendition of A Little Less Conversation. Our young musicians also impressed, as Junior Rock Band’s interpretation of Lynryd Skynrd’s Sweet Home Alabama brought the audience to its feet.

MUSIC SUCCESS

Musician Henry Ward impressed judges with his performance of Strauss’ Nocturno to win the brass category at the 2020 Kingston Young Musician of the Year Competition. Fifth Year French Horn player Henry finished runner-up in the overall competition.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Rock band The Initiative stole the show with their rendition of Harry Style’s Kiwi at the Wimbledon High School, Battle of the Bands competition. The Hamptonians were voted overall winners of the competition by the audience and a panel of judges.

ST PAUL’S EVENSONG

Choristers performed Choral Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Chamber Choir, made up of over 40 boys of all ages, sang a challenging programme of liturgical music including Leighton’s Preces and Responses and Dyson’s Evening Service in F.

ISSP MUSIC DAY

Pupils from Hampton and LEH joined partnership schools Teddington School and Hampton High for a day of music-making. The young musicians worked in ensemble groups during the day. The event culminated in an evening concert for family and friends which included an impressive orchestral performance of the Jurassic Park film score and an energetic mash-up from the television show Glee.

RS TRIP

Fourth Year Religious Studies pupils visited the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon and St Paul’s Cathedral to experience different cultures and religions first hand. At St Paul’s the pupils admired the breathtaking mosaics in the Quire and discovered more about the symbolism of vestments worn by the clergy.

JUNIOR SKI TRIP

Junior skiers took to the slopes of Les Menuires for a week long adventure in the French Alps. Over 70 boys enjoyed near perfect conditions on the pistes, with our novice skiers progressing from the nursery slopes to the more challenging blue and red runs. The boys also had time to enjoy plenty of fun après-ski activities including the exhilarating twists and turns of a 1,000 metre toboggan run on rails.

ICELAND

The fascinating volcanic landscape of Iceland was the destination for Fourth and Fifth Year Geographers. The group visited the Reykjanes Peninsula where they marvelled at the mudpots and fumaroles of the active geothermal area. A highlight of the trip was the glacier hike around Sólheimajökull. Kitted out with helmets, crampons and an ice axe, the boys explored the features of the majestic ‘Black Glacier’.

Sports Coach, Mr Joseph Cumberbatch, wowed judges including Heston Blumenthal on Channel 4’s new cooking show Crazy Delicious. His creative and innovative dishes included a BBQ watermelon. Mr Cumberbatch won the coveted Golden Apple trophy which he brought into School to show the boys.

TOP PHOTOGRAPHER

Sam Rowley OH (2013) has won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year LUMIX People’s Choice Award after 28,000 people voted for his photo Station Squabble.

The stunning image depicting two mice fighting over a morsel of food has received acclaim from all over the world. Sam, who works for the BBC’s Natural History film-making unit, says it took a lot of patience to get the perfect shot: “I got lucky - but then I had spent five days lying on a platform so it was probably going to happen at some point.”

BLAKE CULLEN England U19 star Blake Cullen has been awarded a three-year contract with Middlesex County Cricket Club. It has been a momentous year for the Upper Sixth Former with three England call-ups to the U19 squad. The contract with Middlesex will see him remain at Lord’s until at least the end of the 2023 season. Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s Managing Director of Cricket, commented: “We have been excited by Blake’s potential for quite some time. He is an intelligent young man, and this contract, which I hope will be the first of many he has with Middlesex, will see him through his time at University.”

SENIOR CRICKET TOUR INDIA

Hampton’s Senior Cricketers enjoyed a memorable sporting and cultural tour of India. The team played a number of fixtures including a match at the famous Oval Maidan in Mumbai. There were many strong individual and team performances and the cricketers used the opportunity to develop their bowling and batting skills in different conditions against tough opposition.

As well as competitive cricket, the boys explored the Gateway of India monument and Sabarmati Ashram, the home of Mahatma Gandhi.

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Eight members of the Hampton Ski Team travelled to Wengen in Switzerland to compete in the 21st British Schoolboys’ Ski Championships, enjoying their best results to date. The highlight of the competition was Upper Sixth Former Sam Schomberg’s Bronze medal in the hotly contested U18 slalom race.

HAYDEN CHRISTIAN

Third Year athlete Hayden Christian has started the season in great form reaching the final of the junior boys 60m hurdles at the England Indoor Athletics Championships. After achieving automatic qualification in the heats, Hayden ran under nine seconds in the final, finishing in a commendable sixth place. Hayden is now looking forward to some strong results in the summer season ahead.

RUGBY SEVENS

Hampton’s senior rugby players started the Sevens season in convincing style with a wellearned victory for our First VII in the final of the Hampton School Founders’ Day tournament. Lower down the School, our U12s and U14s also added to the trophy cabinet, winning the Ibstock Place School and Surrey Sevens competitions respectively.

HAMPTON HEAD

Over 470 crews from across the country took part in the 2020 Hampton Fours and Eights Head. Despite difficult racing conditions, Hampton crews performed well with a win for the J18 coxless four. The J16 and J18 First and Second VIII crews all took home Silver medals.


ESFA FINALISTS Three Hampton teams reach the final of their English Schools’ FA competition.

Hundreds of schools from across England entered this year’s ESFA tournaments. For the first time in the School’s history, three Hampton teams, the Second XI, U16A and U16B, have reached their respective finals. Particular mention goes to our U16B team who already have two ESFA finals under their belt, at U14 and U15 level.

The three Hampton teams hope to follow in the footsteps of last year’s First XI who brought home the coveted U18 ESFA Trophy after a stunning victory in front of 700 Hampton supporters at Shrewsbury Town FC.

Director of Football David Burke praised the three Hampton squads: “We have now reached seven ESFA finals in the last three seasons, which is a fantastic achievement for our School. All our players have worked incredibly hard and reaching the three 2020 finals is just reward for all their efforts. Everyone at the School is immensely proud of them.”
