HAMPTON ADVENTURES The Adventure Society has been back in action running a range of fun residential trips this term.

Second Years headed to Europe’s largest natural harbour in Poole for a weekend on the water. The calm seas offered ideal conditions to acquire new skills. Despite the occasional capsizing, Hamptonians enjoyed getting to grips with windsurfing, pico sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking. There was even time for some crabbing and beach football.

ANDY LAWRENCE MBE Everyone in the Hampton community has congratulated History teacher Mr Andy Lawrence on receiving an MBE in the Platinum Jubilee Honours List for his services to Holocaust and genocide education.

Headmaster Mr Kevin Knibbs says it is hard to think of anyone more deserving of such recognition: “Mr Lawrence has worked tirelessly to improve genocide and Holocaust awareness among young people. Many Hamptonians have become dedicated members of the pupil action group Genocide80Twenty that he established 15 years ago – long may their pioneering work continue to flourish and inspire!”

MARY ROSE

Second Year Historians travelled to Portsmouth to explore the fascinating wreck of Henry VIII’s favourite warship, the Mary Rose.

As well as getting a glimpse of life on board during Tudor times, pupils explored reasons why the ship sank by examining artefacts recovered from the seabed.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN TEAM

The summer term saw the 2022-23 School Captain, Vice-Captains and our new Prefects and Mentors take up their roles. The pupils act as ambassadors for the School and serve as important role models to their fellow Hamptonians.

LINGUISTICS SUCCESS

Upper Sixth Former Daniel Morgan excelled in this year’s UK Linguistics Olympiad, a competition which challenges pupils to solve linguistic data problems.

Daniel achieved a Distinction for his performance and was invited to attend a squad training camp at the University of Warwick.

OUR FOUNDERS

Pupils from the History, Archives & Archaeology Club have made a film exploring the history of Hampton School’s founders: Robert Hammond, Nicholas Pigeon, Captain John Jones and his son-in-law Nathaniel Lacey.

Lower School Hamptonians Archer Jones, Dylan Love and Joshua Ripon filmed at key locations around the local area.

They visited Hampton Court Palace and St Mary’s Church to tell the history of the four founders who date back to 1557.

The film can be found on Hampton’s YouTube channel.

GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIPS Geographers have been making the most of the sunny weather to put their newfound geographical skills into practice.

Fourth Year Hamptonians travelled to the south coast to investigate longshore drift, while Second Years headed to Cuckmere Haven to explore river features and changes in landforms.

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD Over 230 Hamptonians headed out on five DofE expeditions this term.

Tackling terrain from open heathland and ancient forests to moorland and mountains, destinations included Dorset, the New Forest and the Lake District. As well as hiking trips, DofE participants completed nearly 4,000 hours of volunteering this year including gardening for an elderly neighbour, volunteering at local primary schools and assisting with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

UKRAINIAN FILM NIGHT Over 130 Ukrainian parents and children attended a film night at Hampton School this term to watch the Disney classic Wall-E. The event was organised to welcome families into the community and it is hoped that it will be the first of several cultural and social activities hosted by the School.

The School’s Ukraine Fundraising Appeal currently stands at over £21,000. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the fund.

TALK!

A packed Hammond Theatre learned about the impact of the fourth industrial revolution from global tech leader Cindy Rose OBE, the President of Microsoft for Western Europe.

Cindy spoke about the broad range of digital initiatives happening globally from underwater cloud storage, to quantum computing and virtual factories.

Addressing the younger members of the audience from Hampton and our partner schools, Cindy encouraged them to explore the fascinating array of careers opening up in the digital sphere, explaining that there are opportunities for experts in every field.

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES

Creative juices were flowing as Year 5 pupils from six local primary schools immersed themselves in a world of imagination at the Cabinet of Curiosities Creative Writing workshop.

The workshop provided aspiring young authors the opportunity to hone their writing skills as they delved deep into the ‘Cabinet’ and created a story around one of the unusual objects.

CLARENDON JUBILEE LUNCH Pupils from Clarendon Primary Centre joined Hamptonians for a celebratory Jubilee lunch as part of our Week of Service.

Impressive heights were reached as they also tried their hand at rock climbing, ably assisted by Hampton pupils.

LEADERSHIP COURSE Lower Sixth Formers from Hampton and LEH came together for a leadership course at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre.

The pupils worked together to tackle a range of fun activities and learnt that the key to successful leadership is cooperation, problem-solving and communication.

ROCK CLIMBING

The Isle of Portland was the destination for the Second, Third and Fourth Year climbing trip.

Adventurers donned harnesses and helmets to tackle a range of climbs at one of Britain’s best climbing spots.

Pupils got to experience classic limestone climbing on iconic cliff faces such as Battleship and the Cuttings, as well as having a go at scrambling and weaselling through the rocks near Sun Lovers Slab.

DORSET ADVENTURE First Years enjoyed a weekend of rock climbing, hiking and giant canoeing on the Jurassic Coast.

The group of 29 pupils took full advantage of beautiful weather as they tackled cliff climbing along the challenging rock faces at Dancing Ledge. Lots of fun was also had on the mud trail assault course where pupils mastered slippery slides, cargo nets and rope swings.

SNOWDONIA

Third Years headed to Snowdonia National Park for an action-packed trip in the Welsh mountains.

Mountain biking on the forestry trails of Betws-y-Coed; kayaking at Plas y Brenin; and rock climbing at Tremadoc were just some of the activities enjoyed by the adventurers.

Hamptonians also braved the elements to scale the summit of Mount Snowdon.

JUNIOR SCHOOLS’ MUSIC WORKSHOP Over 80 young musicians from 24 local primary and prep schools joined together for the annual Junior Schools’ Music Workshop. Led by the Music department and supported by Hampton musicians, pupils enjoyed masterclasses in singing, percussion, brass, woodwind and strings.

The day culminated in an afternoon concert for family and friends featuring a wonderful performance of When I Grow Up from Matilda the Musical.

GUITAR ENSEMBLE

The Senior Guitar Ensemble performed Classical MishMash in E, composed by their teacher Mr Hvartchilkov. The eclectic composition featured snippets from 50 famous classical pieces.

From Pachelbel’s Canon to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, the guitarists mastered the difficult repertoire with aplomb.

SUMMER ROCK CONCERT

Hampton’s young musicians performed a series of classic numbers in this term’s Rock Concert.

Staged in the Drama Hall, highlights included the Junior Rock Band’s rendition of Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix, alongside some fantastic solo performances. Our Sixth Form musicians also impressed, as Senior Rock Band’s interpretation of Losing my Religion by R.E.M. brought the audience to their feet.

ALEX. WONDERLAND The Lower School Summer Show saw a cast of 32 Hamptonians put a 21st century spin on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The young dramatists transported the audience to a virtual video game world full of familiar favourites such as the Mad Hatter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the Cheshire Cat. The vibrant production brought new life to the classic tale and received ‘lots of likes’ from the audience.

LEAVERS’ CONCERT

Family, fellow pupils and staff gathered to celebrate our Upper Sixth Formers’ contribution to the musical life of the School in a superb concert in the Hammond Theatre.

From Vivaldi to Billy Joel and Charlie Mingus to John Legend, pupils entertained the audience with an eclectic programme including musical theatre, barbershop, jazz ensembles and a range of impressive solo performances.

ATHLETICS Hampton athletes have been on excellent form this season, with strong performances in both individual and combined track and field events.

Representing Middlesex, Fifth Years Hayden Christian, Kieran Bouwmeester-Reid and Aaron Mills were crowned South East England Combined Events Champions. They now qualify for the English Schools’ National finals in September.

In a first for the School, a remarkable four Hamptonians have been selected to compete at the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships.

Hayden, Kieran and Aaron, along with Sixth Former Gus Carter, will all compete at the finals in Manchester later this month.

ROWING The Boat Club enjoyed a strong end to the season with the First VIII qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta and beating Brooks School USA in the first round of the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup. Exciting regatta racing saw our oarsmen reach multiple finals and achieve twelve wins at the Reading Town, Bedford and Star regattas.

69 Hamptonians competed at the National Schools’ Regatta with everyone making their finals and the J16 coxed four clinching a well-deserved Bronze medal.

TENNIS

First Years excelled at this year’s Surrey Schools’ League finals winning a well-deserved Silver medal, a feat matched by the U13 team at the Surrey Schools’ Festival.

RICHMOND SCHOOLS’ GOLF

The Senior team also had a strong season reaching the semi-final of the Rootham Shield.

Hampton’s golfers took to the fairways at Fulwell Golf Club in the annual Richmond Schools’ Golf Tournament.

Golfers from eight local schools competed and Hamptonians made the most of the perfect golfing conditions on the 18-hole, par 71 full-length course, with some strong individual performances across the day.

CRICKET Our cricket teams have enjoyed an impressive season, winning 116 of their 180 matches.

The U15A team reached the final, and the U14A and U12A cricketers the semi-final, in their respective Middlesex Cup competitions.

Exceptional individual performances included Fifth Year Naavya Sharma’s 135 runs against Tiffin School, and taking five wickets against KCS Wimbledon. His First XI teammates Alex Zotov and Captain Arjun Bhat also impressed, taking six wickets against St George’s College and Dulwich College respectively. For the U14A team, Angus Hacking chalked up a hat-trick against St Paul’s School.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONS!

The U13A team are crowned English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) champions.

For the first time in Hampton’s history, Second Year footballers have won the prestigious ESFA competition. Having progressed through nine rounds of the competition involving 630 teams from across the country, the U13As clinched victory after a penalty shootout at The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion Football Club. Congratulations also go to our U16B team who reached their ESFA final.

Director of Football Mr David Burke congratulated the Lower School footballers on their fantastic achievement: “Hampton footballers always astound me with their never-give-up attitude. By working hard and constantly learning, the U13A team have deservedly won their ESFA tournament and should be very proud.”
