This brick fence looks abandoned but gives out a feeling that there are mysteries just waiting to be discovered when stepped inside. The shape also gives an impression of a gate/opening that welcomes people in. This “gate” also breaks the boundary of the inside and outside. The exposed cement gives an impression of respect to materiality.

The missing few bricks on the cracked area of this brick fence made me curious on where it actually went. It also provides a glimpse of how the vegetation looks like inside. This then creates curiosity and persuades people who passes to look what’s inside. The opening somehow also looks like the holes from the Great Wall of China that one can take a peek inside.

What’s interesting about this particular brick fence is that I think the original intention was good. With time, the original indigo paint coated on top of white paint began to fade, revealing the natural red/maroon colours of the bricks. The criss-cross pattern gave a unique look and added character to the fence. The fence is not too high, but high enough to create a boundary between the front yard and the pedestrian path.

This brick fence has an interesting choice of colours. Mixed with brown, maroon and red, it adds diversity to its colours and gave a character to the fence. The house-shaped bricks on top of the gate’s columns somehow have the same resemblance with the mail box. As the vegetation began to spread out of the broken fence, it reflected how a design should be adaptable to the environment.

It’s interesting to see how vandalism can change a structure. With “ASIA” sprayed on the fence, it then gives an impression of racism. I think leaving the colour close to its original maroon is also a respect to materiality. The fence has a proper sequencing and composition and with the touch of thin brown bricks on the top, it resembles the famous saying, “Icing on the cake”.

Two mall blocks of brick fence fell off the original structure. As its function as a fence deteriorates, these two blocks can be converted and maybe be used an chairs for people who passes by. This adds additional flexibility and function to the blocks of brick fence. The cracks on the fence gives an impression of materiality and ageing. Despite being abandoned, it is still able to hold itself up.

I love the fact that it has a very artistic representation of the concept and design. The white lines paired with black background showed character and reminded me of the feeling I get when I visit a museum and enjoying looking at the displayed paintings. It had an adequate written explanation of how and why the artist/architect did what he did. The perspective clearly shown an amount of detail and the atmosphere it was trying to convey.
What was lacking is the other detailed drawings of the design. Things such as a three dimensional perspectives and plans and sections showing the scale of the structure would better explain and showcase the design. The overall layout seemed a bit off as well. Only having one elevation cannot tell as much story compared to a fully articulated drawings. The written explanation took up most of space explaining other landmarks rather than focusing on the concept and design of the structure. The artist talked about the structure reflecting Melbourne in the form of the sea but in my opinion it looked more like hills or mountains.
As a landmark, this would have worked too if the artist/architect included a whole set of drawings explaining and showcasing the design. The form of the structure for its time was very experimental but very interesting. Although it had really good intensions, I didn’t see it being reflected on the perspective. I think this would been much better if there was more to just one perspective. Seeing it on the site in today’s context made me feel that it was a wasted opportunity that could have been something if it had better and more visual representation.

STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES
IMPROVEMENTS
In terms of formality in layout, drawings and presentation, this entry looked more professional and well thought-off. It had site context and surrounding programs integrated into the design. The section showed a good sense of scale and gave a representation of how the structure will look like. The drawings had a good amount of linewidths and was in scale. I love the idea of having a bar and disco on top of the sphere showcasing Melbourne for its famous bars and even rooftop bars we have now.
I think what was lacking was a three-dimensional representation of the structure. Although the drawings were good, it also lacked written description of how this structure functions and represents Melbourne. In terms of scale, looking at the section I think it is way too big and not to a respectable human scale. On my first impression, it also somehow looked like a giant water tank in the middle of the city that instead of it being a landmark, it might become an eye-sore.
As a landmark, I think this would have worked if there was a careful written explanation of why the architect/designer chose to have three towers and a sphere and a better scaled structure that is not too intimidating. By placing the re-sketched entry on the site, the structure is huge. Having a three-dimensional drawing added to the panel would further let the viewers understand the context more. Looking at it in today’s setting, it would just become an eyesore rather than a successful landmark. Maybe reducing the size and adding more colors to the structure would make it more interesting and vibrant.

STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES
IMPROVEMENTS
I am really fond of the idea of an spiral ramp that goes up and sort of acts like an journey through time. The spiraling ramps also reminded me of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Looking at the floor plans, the programs were actually very well-thought and organized. Having a central and vertical core as well is very efficient. I like the idea of having a museum for all the achievements of mankind and I think as a concept, it was unique during that time.
What I found lacking was the articulation of the form. The form reminded me of a circus tent rather than a spectacular museum. It also looked like a giant unpeeled garlic. The drawing lacks scale and the section looked way to high compared to the perspective drawing. The drawings also seemed unrefined with no appropriate line values and such. Labels are poorly written and as the pages are just taped to the board, I think it could have done a lot better in terms of presentation. While the explanations in the middle is informative, it is way too much words and very hard to read.
As a landmark, I don’t think this would not have worked mainly because the actual form is not visually pleasing. By placing the re-sketched entry on today’s site and setting, it looked off and out of place. Although I really like the idea of having an Museum for all the achievements of mankind, the form rather can further be enhanced and refined. The concept in my opinion was a bit vague since this museum can actually be built anywhere around the world due to the fact that it lacks identity. For a landmark or icon to become successful, I think the structure should reflect the culture of Melbourne and what makes Melbourne, Melbourne.
