Artist Statement

“One learns a ‘landscape’ finally not by knowing the name or identity of everything in it, but by perceiving the relationships in it … like that between the sparrow and the twig.”

It takes me a long time, frequently a year or two, sometimes more, to decide that a painting has been made. It began as a flat physical thing, hanging amongst the fold, dormant in a way, but actively receptive to a slowly accumulating residue of paint, pours and organic processes – building its surface and body, incipient shapes transforming without preconceived direction or intent. Spaces and forms emerge – tentatively – and echo off me, finally making visible the beginning steps into the painting. I am there, but the painting is not yet.

Shapes and structures develop, only to be submerged, becoming substructures of new forms as they appear. Much of what happens in the early stages of a painting are not a visible part of the finished work, yet the evidence of their earlier existence is engrained within the surface, participating in the ongoing experience of the work.

And then, there is the immense frustration of time, time to allow for myself. In the course of a day, so many things present themselves to be seen, addressed, questioned, answered; so many things to be felt, decided. Deep inside the banal requirements and preoccupations of a day stir sensations and impressions that are forever accumulating, collecting, simmering. These latent fragments are the foundations of reverie: 2

they come to the surface, awaken me. My work has to have something grand in its making, in its intent. It has to be about something vastly important to me; things intensely intimate – something that steps up the beat of my heart.

The desire to give substance to things in the world that are not visible – the internal, the emotional, the spiritual – this is at the roots of abstract painting. As I set to work, I can call upon the craft, a craft that has evolved and become so familiar to me over time and practice. But in themselves, painterly devices, like the letters of an alphabet that mean nothing until formed into words, are no more than tools. It is in being put to work, trial and error, adding and subtracting, by establishing relationships, that they become the language of painting. Physically, my process of painting has always suggested building, construction, digging. The image eventually uncovered becomes an externalized possibility through which I can evaluate my own concerns, how I can assess my own location in the world.

Each painting finds its own pacing. With the starts and stops of surface changes the timber and tone of each work resonate differently. Bits of detail begin to affirm their place, more weighted geometric structures and linear frameworks emerge, fragments with intimations of the ‘real,’ lift themselves out of their abstract world to mark a change of passage. The more calculated applications of paint, the deliberate marks, and the precision of drawing often feel like the process of filing, of stacking and layering relationships.

Spaces open and close, shifting, transgressing the elusive edges between atmospheric spaces and weighted industrial forms, a slice of neon colour vibrates as though something has just crystallized on the periphery of my vision, threaded into the surface, delineating corridors, and passageways to neighboring spaces, all caught up in a geometric and geographic metamorphosis.

As I grow in age, I often find myself more urgently baffled by the resolution of a painting that has been with me for so long. The exchange has been so... intimate. Why is this work ending now, not yesterday, not tomorrow? I am always glad to be disquieted by a work from my past, to still be engaged by its potential, it’s ‘what if ?’ The work is not finished; I simply had to decide to stop there.

And so it is that each work eventually morphs into something that becomes its own world, somehow real, somehow familiar, somehow questioning and opening to the gaze and exploration of others.

Il me faut bien du temps, souvent un an ou deux, et même davantage dans certains cas, pour décider qu’un tableau est achevé. Au début, le tableau est un objet concret et plat, accroché parmi les autres, sommeillant en quelque sorte, mais qui est fortement réceptif à la lente accumulation de résidus de peinture, de déversements et de processus organiques. La morphologie et la surface se constituent, les formes naissantes évoluent, sans direction ni intention préconçues. Les formes et les espaces émergent – hésitants – et résonnent contre moi, rendant finalement visibles les premières étapes vers la peinture. Moi, j’y suis déjà, mais le tableau, pas encore.

Les formes et les structures se déploient, puis sont submergées, et deviennent les sous-structures de formes nouvelles qui remontent à la surface. Les premières étapes d’un tableau ne sont pas, pour une grande part, visuellement perceptibles dans l’œuvre achevée; mais pourtant, les manifestations de cette existence antérieure sont ancrées dans la surface et participent au processus continu de l’œuvre.

Et puis, il y a cette immense frustration issue du temps, ce temps à accorder à moi-même. Au fil du passage d’une journée, tant de choses se présentent : choses à voir, à régler, à repenser, à résoudre; tant à ressentir et à décider. Au plus profond des exigences et des préoccupations quotidiennes banales, on retrouve 8

des sensations et des impressions qui toujours s’accumulent, se rassemblent et conspirent. Ces fragments latents servent de fondement à la rêverie. Ils affleurent à la surface et suscitent mon éveil. Mon travail doit comporter quelque chose de magistral dans sa réalisation, dans son intention. Il doit aborder des éléments qui résonnent au plus profond de moi, si intensément intimes qu’ils accélèrent les battements de mon cœur.

Le désir de conférer une substance aux aspects invisibles de ce monde — l’interne, l’émotionnel, le spirituel — se retrouve à l’origine de la peinture abstraite. Lorsque je me mets à peindre, je fais appel à l’art, cet acte de création qui, au fil du temps et de la pratique, m’est devenu si familier. Les procédés de la peinture ne représentent en soi que des vecteurs, tout comme les lettres d’un alphabet qui ne signifient rien avant de s’assembler pour former des mots. C’est par la mise en pratique, par des essais et erreurs, des ajouts et retraits et l’établissement de relations que ces procédés se transforment en langage pictural. D’un point de vue physique, mon processus de travail s’est toujours apparenté à la construction, à l’assemblage, à l’excavation.

L’image qui finit par se dévoiler devient une possibilité externalisée par laquelle je peux évaluer mes propres préoccupations et situer ma propre place dans le monde.

Chaque tableau trouve son rythme propre. Les amorces et les interruptions dans les mutations de la surface confèrent une résonnance différente au timbre et au ton de chaque œuvre. Des bribes de détails commencent à réclamer leur espace, les structures géométriques et les cadres linéaires de poids émergent, des fragments chargés d’indices du « réel » s’extraient de leur abstraction pour marquer la bifurcation d’un trait de pinceau. Les applications de peinture plus calculées, les empreintes délibérées et la précision du tracé s’apparentent souvent à un processus de remplissage, d’amoncellement et de stratification de rapports. Les espaces s’ouvrent et se referment, se déplacent en transgressant les limites insaisissables entre les espaces atmosphériques et les lourdes formes industrielles. Une ligne de couleur fluorescente vibre comme si quelque chose venait tout juste de se cristalliser à la périphérie de mon champ visuel, imbriquée dans la surface, déli10

mitant les corridors et les passages vers les espaces avoisinants, complètement absorbée dans une métamorphose géométrique et géographique.

À mesure que j’avance en âge, je suis souvent déconcertée par le terme d’un tableau qui m’habite depuis longtemps. L’échange a été si… intime. Pourquoi cette œuvre doit-elle s’achever maintenant, et pas hier, ni demain? Je suis toujours heureuse de me sentir troublée par une œuvre antérieure, d’être encore interpellée par sa potentialité. « Que se passerait-il si? » Le tableau n’est pas terminé, il m’a simplement fallu décider d’arrêter à un certain moment.

Et c’est ainsi que chaque œuvre finit par se transformer en une conceptualisation qui devient son propre monde, quelque peu réelle, quelque peu familière, et qui se présente comme questionnement et exploration dans le regard des autres.

NEW WORK BY CATHERINE EVERETT Donald Andrus

It has been much too long since we have had a chance to see what has been going on in Catherine Everett’s studio out in Oxford Station, Ontario. Life has a funny way of forcing its way through the door and before one knows it, time has passed and life has moved on. This is never really a worry in Catherine Everett’s case - she is a consummate artist, something that could never be taught and that is always a part of her psyche. Judging by the work in this exhibition the wait, as we knew it would be, has been well worthwhile.

The most striking quality of these new paintings by Everett is that they are packed with feeling and activity, but never to the point of becoming emotional or of losing their way. And the way that they pursue is that of a kind of abstract wasteland.

The choice of words to describe the effect of Everett’s paintings is meaningful in relation to T.S. Eliot’s poem, The Waste Land. The surfaces of these paintings, the quality of the drawing, the colour, the seemingly infinite tonal range and a certain “dark14

ness” in overall impression, all are superbly suited to talk about a mind-scape that appears to track a human presence just at the edge of our perception.

At the same time these paintings draw the viewer in and create a certain intimacy of connectivity. No matter what the scale, they welcome a close reading in a way that almost seems to mirror the effect of reading a music manuscript. The shifts, the changes in tonality, the markings of paint and the scratching of the drawing ultimately sound to the eye in an endlessly rich and satisfying manner. As with a particularly seductive piece of music one leaves the painting reluctantly but with passages of the work embedded and echoing in one’s visual memory.

For a very long time Everett has been an abstract artist and whether it be in painting or sculpture there always appear to be indirect references to naturalistic forms, shapes, beings, which settle comfortably into the abstract environment that she creates.

Il y a beaucoup trop longtemps que nous n’avons pas eu la chance de voir ce qui se passait dans l’atelier de Catherine Everett, à Oxford Station, en Ontario. La vie a cette étrange façon de faire son chemin, et avant même qu’on ait eu le temps de s’en apercevoir, le temps a filé par la grande porte, suivant inexorablement son cours. En ce qui concerne Catherine Everett, cette fuite du temps n’inquiète nullement : elle est une artiste complète — l’art est ancré en permanence dans tout son être. À en juger par les œuvres de cette exposition, l’attente en valait largement la peine, de toute évidence.

Ce qui nous saisit avant tout dans les nouveaux tableaux de Catherine Everett, c’est qu’ils sont empreints de sentiment et de mouvement, mais jamais au point de devenir émotifs ou de dériver de leur nature. Et cette nature s’apparente à une sorte de terre aride abstraite. Le choix des mots pour décrire l’effet que provoquent les œuvres de Catherine Everett prend son sens à la lumière du poème La Terre vaine 16

de T.S. Eliot. La surface de ces tableaux, la qualité du dessin, la couleur, la gamme de tons qui se déploie à l’infini et une impression générale que l’on pourrait qualifier de « ténébreuse » sont toutes superbement agencées pour évoquer un état d’esprit qui semble discerner et suivre une présence humaine à la lisière de notre perception.

Du même souffle, ces peintures attirent le spectateur dans leur univers et créent une sorte d’intimité communicative. Peu importe à quelle échelle on les observe, ces œuvres incitent à une lecture attentive et rapprochée, comme on le ferait avec une partition musicale manuscrite. Les virages, les changements de ton, les marques de peinture et le grattage du dessin envoûtent l’œil d’une façon infiniment riche et harmonieuse. On quitte le tableau à contrecœur comme on s’éloigne d’une pièce musicale particulièrement captivante, mais avec des passages de l’œuvre imprégnés en nous qui trouvent écho dans notre mémoire visuelle.

Catherine Everett crée depuis très longtemps des œuvres abstraites et, qu’il s’agisse de ses tableaux ou de ses sculptures, on croit chaque fois y percevoir des références indirectes à des figures, à des formes et à des êtres naturalistes confortablement installés dans les cadres abstraits qu’elle compose.

Born in Dingwall Scotland, Andrus studied Art History and Studio Art at the University of Toronto from which he graduated with an MA in Art History. Andrus became a Professor in Art History at Concordia University in Montreal where he lectured until 1996 when he took an early retirement in order to pursue his studio work full-time.

Andrus has exhibited steadily in museums and galleries since 1988 and recently was given a 15 year survey exhibition by the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown, PEI. He is represented in such collections as The Confederation Centre Art Gallery, The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton NB, The PEI Art Bank and in corporate collections such as that of the law firm, MacIness, Stewart in Halifax, NS. and BGHJ Architects, Charlottetown, PEI
