E

ven now in modern times the fireplace is still the central point in the room. We still like the idea of heat and an appealing focal point. We talk to all sorts of people from so many different areas and all sorts of styles of home.

the choice and range of imitation stoves has increased both in gas and electric. So, regardless of your preferred fuel choice, there’s a stove just for you.

The one thing that is always said, even in modern homes is: “we love a fireplace”. It’s strange if one is not there, and when it comes to planning a rooms décor, it is difficult to work out the layout without one.

Customers love the care and attention that Focus give them, from start to finish. The advantages of having our own in house fitting and experienced sales staff allows us to control and deliver the high standards we expect from ourselves. Our installation team are both HETAS and Gas Safe registered.

Fashions come and go, even in fireplaces. We have noticed over the years the popularity of stoves, they don’t always suit every lifestyle or flue. However,

The showroom has over 60 displays covering all styles of fireplaces and stoves. We cater for open fires, gas or electric and can guide you through the maze

elcome to our April edition. With spring on the way we have seen lots of activity around Malton. It is exciting to see some new shops opening in our street. Being an independent retailer is a huge challenge so please show your support and use our local shops where you can. Thank you to all those who completed our survey in the February edition. We have had some really interesting feedback, most of it very complimentary but all really useful. I will tell you more next month when we’ve had a chance to digest the information. There was a prize though and we’ve drawn Mrs Pickering as the winner. Well done and thank you very much for entering! This month spring should really get going. It should…at the time of writing it is snowing outside and I’m not exactly warm. My other half has started clearing out our two garden ponds. The

front pond is formal and has goldfish, whilst our back garden pond is relaxed and is a haven for wildlife. Whilst this is great, it is also a haven for frogs and is usually a bubbling mass of writhing amphibians come April! A couple of years ago the lining developed a leak (more to do with the use of a scythe than really an accident!) but it had to be emptied. My husband and son enjoyed an exciting day scooping out water and wildlife into plastic boxes and there were frogs everywhere! I am not really a fan of frogs, despite my family telling me they eat slugs (a complete phobia of mine!). This year I’m hoping the early clear out will discourage quite so much activity in the pond, although I have recently seen them hopping into the front pond... There are, as usual, lots of local activities to get involved with this month. And if you need help in your garden or home, get in touch with one of our lovely local tradesmen. Well done to Mr Hesp of Rillington for winning the February competition.

Another £1000 goes to Ryedale Carers Support which provides practical and emotional help for carers, the people they care for and older people living on their own. The donation will help support their monthly events such as its Farmer’s Breakfast at Middleton village hall where retired people from north Ryedale’s rural community living alone and often reliant on carers are brought together to meet and chat over a bite to eat.

The donations are the first tranche of more than £8000 raised on board the Lions Santa Sleigh to help local good causes. Next Steps, who offer support to people with disabilities and mental health issues, including those that suffer with isolation and loneliness, have been given £1000. This will support cafestyle drop-in centres in Norton, Pickering and Kirkbymoorside, offering help, activities, advice and computer skills, as well as opportunities to meet socially. The Encephalitis Society, based in Malton, will receive £1000 to help continue its global work supporting people affected by the condition, an inflammation of the brain. The money will be used in many different ways, from funding its support line, through to training volunteers to help others with encephalitis, or even covering the cost of a member’s place at one of its specialist residential retreats.

Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band’s ambitious extension plan for a new band and scout hall in Manor Vale has been boosted by a £1500 donation towards the building work. The new 200-seater hall and scout room will provide a massive boost to two local groups who provide support, personal development and enjoyment to many youngsters in the town. The Kirk Theatre in Pickering will benefit from £500 to help upgrade its communications system. Further beneficiaries for remaining funds are currently being identified by the Ryedale Lions Club.

ENGLISH EVOLUTION BY MARY MAHON

With the world ready and waiting to be explored, the desire to learn foreign languages is greater than ever. Whether you’re fresh out of education ready to taste the world, a businessman visiting distant countries or simply a holiday-goer travelling to new, vibrant sights, knowing another language is always helpful. However, we all speak three extra languages without even realising it... In the modern day, most of us are fluent in the three languages: ‘sarcasm’, ‘exaggeration’ and ‘emoji’, and these evolutions of English have become intertwined into the very core of our society. Seemingly everybody exaggerates and it’s no surprise why! The internet is a catalyst for trends, relentlessly taking new phrases and making them viral. I myself am a helpless victim; around lunchtime I am ‘literally starving’, when I’m waiting at the bus stop I am ‘genuinely freezing’, and after watching a good film, I’ll claim it’s ‘incredible’, it’s ‘awesome’ or, best yet, it’s ‘absolutely heart-stopping’. Similarly, I’m sure most of us are a little too fluent in speaking sarcasm. Like exaggeration, sarcasm alters true meanings, so generally ‘no’ means ‘yes’ and ‘please go on’ means ‘seriously, stop talking’. However, using sarcasm over text, to a young child or to someone who isn’t fluent in the same language often leads to confusion - it’s an art in itself! Emojis are innovative to our generation; something so simple yet now so utterly essential. The digital expressions of emotions, ideas and opinions truly are incredible, as they help us break language barriers across the globe effortlessly. Even the Oxford Dictionary joined the trend, recognising the ‘Face with Tears of Joy’ as the word of the year in 2015! Whilst some people disapprove of this ‘devolution’ of language, I believe language change is something to be embraced! Imagine a world where we still recited ‘thus’, ‘thy’ and ‘thee’ on a daily basis. Yes, this might trivialise the original meaning of words, but in essence we are simply spicing up our language, expressing a greater passion in our speech! And surely, having an exciting, passionate life is something to die for. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 5th April

SURPLUS AND SYNCHRONICITY IN KIRKBYMOORSIDE You know how sometimes things just fall into place as if it was meant to be? My grandma called it fate but others call it synchronicity – when everything seems to just slot into place and work out right, and it has happened this year in Kirkbymoorside. Let me explain; last autumn we had a bumper apple crop, the best in living memory, so there were lots of surplus apples looking for a home. The Kirkby fruit project was set up by volunteers in 2012 to find a use for local fruit that would otherwise go to waste and last autumn we were given lots of spare apples. Our volunteers normally use surplus apples to produce bottles of apple juice which are then sold to raise funds for local groups but in 2015 the crop was so large that, for the first time, in addition to apple juice we decided to make cider. Fortunately we have volunteers with experience in making good craft cider and several others who were keen to learn so they got production under way. The normal rule with craft cider is “alcohol by Christmas drinkable by Easter” but since Easter is very early this year it was decided that we should launch our new craft cider for sale from the end of April. Now this is where the final element of the synchronicity really falls into place because on May 1st not only does Kirkbymoorside have the annual tractor run and 10k race but this year we also have the Tour de Yorkshire passing through. So just as the town prepares itself to be in the spotlight and welcome lots of visitors the Kirkby Fruit Project will have our very own craft cider ready for sale, made in the town by volunteers using local apples and with all profits returning to the community. So why not come to Kirkbymoorside on 1st May to watch the tractors, runners and cyclists and pick up a bottle of our very own “KIRKBYMOOR CIDER” whilst you are here. Stocks are limited so don’t miss out. Visit our website at www. kirkbyfruitproject.wordpress.com for more information Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 5th April

The event opens from 11am through to 5pm on Sunday 5th June and this year the focus is on “Hidden!” Tickets will be available on the day from just outside the former bank by Chisholm’s Monument at a cost of just £5 per adult and children 16 and under are free. This ticket gives access to all the gardens taking part and a cream tea which will be served from 1pm in the lovely Quaker Meeting House Gardens on West End. All proceeds will go to the ongoing planting and maintenance scheme in Kirkbymoorside that runs throughout the year. If you have a garden that you enjoy and would like to share, please get in touch with Gaynor De Barr on 01751 430250. It is not too late to enter, and your outdoor area does not need to be a Gardener’s World lookalike! In recent years, visitors to this event say they just love the quirky, unusual and “lived in” gardens that so often tell a tale. If they are tucked away, behind a wall, down a less trodden lane, so much the better! On Sunday 1st May, Kirkbymoorside will be the place to be as the town welcomes the Tour de Yorkshire, 10k Run and the annual Tractor Rally all on the same day!! To celebrate this trio of events, the ‘In Bloom’ volunteers will be running a Cake Stall and have increased orders in anticipation so bring your appetites! Fingers crossed for fine weather! To include your garden in the open gardens event, please call 01751 430250.

How to make your Conservatory feel like a Proper Room

f you’ve ever tried to use your conservatory in the winter, you’ll know that it can feel like a cold, damp and dismal part of the house. In all the glossy conservatory sales catalogues, the sun is always shining, the garden is blooming and everyone is having fun being in the bright and clean ‘new room’. The reality is that most conservatories are too hot to use in comfort in the summer, and certainly too cold to use in the winter. Condensation can be a problem in the winter, and it’s too bright to watch a tv in there in the summer. And when it rains, the noise can be deafening! Most conservatories have been built as temporary structures and usually as a less expensive alternative to an extension. This means that they don’t comply with the building regulations that an extension would have to do especially in terms of the thermal efficiency. The team at local specialists Inceil talk to homeowners every day who want to be able to use their conservatory all year round and not just on the handful of days when the temperature is perfect! Their cost-effective solution is to fit an insulated ceiling fitted to the existing roof structure in just 1 or 2 days. The new plastered ceiling follows the contours of the existing roof and uses the most thermally dynamic insulation available. Your conservatory will feel like a proper room with a better temperature year round. And you don’t have to do anything to the external roof.

On the Inceil informative website www.inceil.co.uk you can watch an installation video which shows exactly how the process works, and request a free survey and quote. Or give them a call on 01904 891936. Transform your conservatory in just one or two days into a comfortable and usable part of your home.

From our customers: John and his lovely team have just finished our ceiling today. We are delighted with it even before it’s painted! The service, from wrapping our furniture at the start to the clean up at the end, was excellent. You barely knew they were there the whole time and I would unreservedly recommend Inceil”. Helen

It’s important when having any works done that you are happy with the people working in your home. Customers frequently comment on how polite and friendly everyone is in the Inceil team – and that they cleaned up when they had finished!

Are you a ‘no’aphobe? I think I just made that up, but would you agree there is a real and growing fear of saying ‘no’? For some, no rolls off the tongue without a second thought, but for others it carries such weight and potential consequence that it rarely appears in their vocabulary. The only thing I find more infuriating than not saying no is saying nothing at all, the ‘passive no’. We have all done it. To avoid saying no we don’t respond to the email, voice message, text or invitation hoping it will go away. It won’t, just say no! Before it’s too late, let’s make saying no socially acceptable again and here are my top two reasons why. Firstly, we should say no when saying yes won’t achieve anything. We are not being selfish it is actually best for all involved, even if they don’t initially recognise it. Jesus said no when the Pharisees asked for a sign to prove who He was. When we read about the life of Jesus in the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John we see He performed lots of miracles: He fed 5000, healed the sick, turned water into wine, calmed the storm, raised the dead and walked on water. All His life, Jesus gave signs to reveal His identity but in this instance He said no because He knew it wouldn’t make a difference, it wouldn’t change their minds. Secondly, we should say no so we can say yes. If we fill our lives with good things we will not have time for the best. Jesus had a higher agenda than pleasing people; His agenda was to please His Father in heaven. The fear of what people will think is often why we say yes, but when we live to please people we can miss out on fulfilling our primary purpose. Before saying yes, think: What will I achieve or could it distract me from what I should be doing? It’s not too late, let’s practise: n...o... spells...? Go on, you can say it!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CAKE & BAKE

BANANA, WALNUT & CHOCOLATE CAKE

Bananas ripen so quickly that it’s easy to find yourself with several left over needing to be used up. Many people don’t like the taste or smell of ripe bananas though so they often go to waste. However, when baked in a cake they lose their slightly sour smell and give a subtle taste, which is particularly delicious when combined with chocolate and walnuts. Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C for fan oven or gas mark 4. INGREDIENTS: Grease a 900g loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper • 100g butter at room temperature Cream the sugar and butter together until fluffy • 100g light brown sugar Add the eggs and the vanilla essence and then the • 25 grams caster sugar (white or golden) bananas and mix in well • 2 large eggs Carefully mix in the flour and bicarb, baking powder • 1 tsp vanilla essence and cinnamon so there are no lumps, then fold through the dark chocolate and most of the walnuts. • 3-4 ripe bananas (depending on size), mashed • 175g plain flour Pour the batter into the loaf tin and bake for 45-55 minutes until a skewer through the centre comes out • 1 tsp baking powder clean. • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda Leave on a rack until cool before serving to allow time • tsp cinnamon for the chocolate to set. • 100g Walnuts (Chopped or whole) Sprinkle with icing sugar and a few more chopped walnuts. • 75g Dark chocolate chopped or coarsely grated

30 years of great service in Ryedale

…for your windows, conservatories and doors

F

ersina Windows is celebrating 30 years of trading in Malton this year!

This remarkable milestone is the result of the hard work and dedication by business owners Alan and Carol Walker, alongside their team based at Horsemarket Road in Malton. Alan said: “To be celebrating three decades in business is incredible! First of all, we’d like to thank all our customers who’ve helped us to succeed here in Malton. A lot of our work is by recommendation, so thank you for your support. “Although most of our work is local we’ve travelled as far as Troon, west to Liverpool and south to London, all from recommendations. The quality of the product, the installation and our friendly approach mean we’ve built a very solid business over the years.” Much has changed over the past 30 years. The technology of glazing and related materials have developed beyond recognition. No longer is white uPVC the only option. Fersina offer bespoke services, unique to their customer’s homes from complex frames to different colours, and even modern ‘glass rooms’. Alan says, “If we take conservatories, Fersina can design and build one which has the technology to keep a room cool or warm – in other words, it can be used throughout the year. We can install thermostat and rain stat controls; we can even create a glass room, with no uPVC joins at all!” From heat-saving replacement double glazing

through to specialist windows, Fersina can help. Alan explained: “If you have a period property, or want to renovate a home, then we can offer beautiful sash windows which replicate traditional wooden ones, but without the need for redecoration or constant care. There is a whole spectrum of colours to choose from, and they don’t cost the earth!” The choice at Fersina is first rate, with slim-line aluminium frames an option, ideal for listed buildings. Our portfolio of work is wide-ranging,” said Alan. “You can see our work in the arched window at the Kirk Theatre in Pickering and the Wesleyan Chapel in Hartoft. Our clients also include schools, the TA Centre in York, modern council builds in the area, and many more.” And from the elegant to the ‘everyday’, Fersina’s outstanding portfolio of products also includes standard or automatic garage doors, a great idea if you find lifting heavy items difficult. If security is top of your list, then why not consider a rock door, the strongest spec door on the market today. Fersina also have a range of roofline products in a multitude of colours. Why not drop into the Fersina Showroom in horsemarket Road in Malton for a chat about your requirements or call 01653 693590. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 31

In the UK in 2012 there were 5.9 million people cohabiting, double the 1996 figure, with the biggest percentage increase being amongst the over 65’s, making cohabitation the fastest growing family type in the UK.

Despite this, recent changes to the intestacy rules (determining who the property and estate passes to when someone dies without a valid Will) has strengthened the position for married couples and those in civil partnerships but not for unmarried couples. Unmarried couples will have no automatic entitlement to their deceased partner’s assets and their estate will pass automatically to their closest relatives, often either their children or their siblings. This could result in your lifelong partner being left with nothing. The concept of ‘common law’ spouse does not exist and is not one which is recognised in law. John Staniland, Solicitor at Mitchells says “Dealing with the loss of a loved one is distressing enough without having to face the prospect of losing your home and your financial security. We strongly recommend every adult to make a Will but it is particularly important for cohabiting couples. Whilst a surviving partner may in certain circumstances have the right to make a claim against the deceased’s estate this could involve lengthy court proceedings with no guarantee of success”. All about waxing Summer hair removal by Sarah Greenhough

W

e are now into spring and this is the perfect time to start thinking of preparing for the summer months ahead. Laura Spaling,

fully qualified Waxing is such a popular Lycon trained. treatment and most people do keep waxing over the winter months. If you have never had waxing and are tired of shaving then maybe it’s time for you to wax!

Waxing Benefits... Exfoliation

When the wax is applied onto your skin it instantly begins to dry which enables the dead skin to stick and also be removed.

Hair will take longer to grow back

This is true. It is because the hair is not cut off at the point that it grows out of the skin like when you shave it. The hair is pulled out from the root which then takes a while for the hair follicle to reproduce new hair. When the hair does grow back it is thinner. The hair follicle, in a way, ‘gives up’ and does not bother to reproduce new hair – more often than not the hair that does not grow back or is much lighter and thinner. At Number One Health and Beauty we offer two types of waxing – Honey Wax and Lycon Hot Wax. We have recently introduced Lycon waxing at the salon which means we offer intimate waxing. Lycon is perfect for areas such as underarm and bikini where the hair is stronger and tougher. It is extremely kind to the skin and has a 50% pain reduction compared to other waxes – leaving the skin smooth with little redness. Number One is the only salon in Ryedale to offer Lycon waxing.

Puddleducks

Nursery Boasts New Development

“Over six years ago, while on maternity leave from my teaching career, I was searching to find the right nursery for my own baby. It was at this point I had the realisation that I could establish my own nursery; somewhere special where other parents would value the facilities, care and learning opportunities that my background equipped me to create”. Sarah Kelly, Proprietor Four years after opening, and

almost at capacity, Puddleducks Nursery in Sheriff Hutton have just opened their brand new, stunning extension. The purpose built nursery has increased capacity by 40%, enabling more families to place their little ones into their highly regarded, award winning environment. The first floor extension boasts a new baby unit for up to eighteen babies, with a well-planned layout, which enables babies to grow

and learn in a safe space. An integrated milk kitchen ensures that the team of highly qualified child care professionals are able to meet babies feeding needs quickly and efficiently. Neutral decor and quality, low level wooden furniture along with a range of beautiful soft furnishings have combined to create a homely ambience where babies quickly settle. Parents value the strong communication links established by the Puddleducks team, in particular the daily diary which each parent receives detailing their baby’s sleeps, meals and varied activities that ensure good learning and progress for each individual. The newly opened extension also boasts a professional kitchen, providing an exciting new space for the nursery cook. Children

benefit from a varied, nutritionally balanced menu and get to grow fruits and vegetables in their own growing patch in the nursery garden, which in turn helps them to understand the importance of leading healthy lifestyles. The large, secure outdoor play areas also feature a variety of exciting equipment to promote exploration, climbing, digging and building; all contributing to children’s excellent all round development. The relocation of the baby facilities has enabled the nursery to also increase capacity for two year olds, with the older toddlers now benefiting from two adjoining play spaces, replenished with a range of exciting new resources.

FRIENDS OF MALTON MUSEUM LECTURE ON 20TH APRIL ‘Great Holderness Harpoon Controversy’ or the Morfitt Family Feud by Bryan Sitch, Deputy Head of Collections, Manchester Museum During the 1920s and 1930s Yorkshire archaeology was shaken by a controversy over the authenticity of two barbed bone points or harpoons found on the Holderness coast by members of the Morfitt family. Originally from Goole, William Morfitt and his two sons and two daughters had retired to the sleepy village of Atwick in 1890. They filled their time by beachcombing and amassed an impressive collection of fossils and archaeological discoveries. Though found in the early 1900s, the harpoons were only identified and publicised in 1922 by Leslie Armstrong. At the Advancement of Science conference held in Hull that year Armstrong compared the Holderness harpoons to dated examples from Denmark and concluded they too were of Maglemosian or Mesolithic date. However, local museum curator, Tom Sheppard, immediately

cast doubt on the authenticity of the harpoons, implying the Morfitts had fabricated them. Two committees of enquiry investigated the matter, articles were published in archaeological journals, and letters were sent to the newspapers, giving the controversy a public profile matched only by that of the Piltdown forgery. In this illustrated lecture the speaker, Bryan Sitch, Deputy Head of Collections at Manchester Museum, will explore the background to the controversy. If they were forgeries why were Armstrong and other prominent archaeologists fooled? If genuine, what was Sheppard’s motivation for attacking them publically? Should the harpoons be regarded as Yorkshire’s answer to the Piltdown Man forgery? Come along and decide for yourself. Venue: The Library, East Wing, Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton at 7.30pm. Top Tips from a dental professional

ARE YOU A MEMBER OF THE HEAVY METAL GENERATION?

I

f you are baby boomer by Christine Parker or born before the 1970’s BDS (GDC 72136) you may well be. Even if your musical tastes are more refined! Fluoride toothpaste was widely introduced in the early 1970’s and this resulted in a huge reduction in the level of dental decay in children. This combined with greater emphasis on children brushing twice a day helped significantly improve their oral health. This population are now in their 40’s and still have significantly fewer fillings than their predecessors. Sadly those of us born before the introduction of fluoride toothpaste tended to need more treatment earlier and this has contributed to a mouthful of filled teeth, many of which are the silver amalgam type, hence the term ‘heavy metal’. Whilst I never recommend the wholesale removal of silver fillings in favour of the white there are often ways to improve the aesthetics of the smile and to replace missing teeth so that you can feel confident and chew properly. So if you would like advice on what is possible for you then why not give us a call and we can make sure its just you that’s rocking and not your teeth! Please contact Jan at Howardian Dental Practice.

Efficient stoves that won’t cost the earth

T

own and Country Fires, based at Thornton Road industrial Estate in Pickering have been manufacturing and supplying stoves since 1977.

The business now occupies three sites on the estate; their factory and, opposite, two large showrooms. As a family run business with a wealth of experience, Town and Country Fires use a combination of old and new techniques to manufacture some of the best, energy efficient, multi fuel, solid fuel and wood burning stoves. Their products are available right across the UK. All DEFRA approved as standard, the full range of solid 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

fuel and wood burning stoves all carry certified efficiency ratings and comply with EN 13240 2001. They are also Hetas approved and C.E. marked. Town and Country have also kept to their Yorkshire roots by employing skilled, local staff and using local suppliers where possible. Even the stoves have local Yorkshire names such as Glaisdale, Runswick and Rosedale! The stoves are ingeniously designed using the best British steel, which is laser-cut, bent in a special CNC press, welded and then hand finished. The glass doors are also given an air wash, helping maintain cleanliness and prolong the enjoyment of a real fire.

The design team are respected around the world for using a combination of traditional and modern techniques, creating wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves that have up to 85% certified efficiency rates.

New Models

Ever on a mission for new innovative designs, Town and Country have developed three new models: the Langdale, Dalby and Saltburn. The Langdale is a smart 7.5kw round stove with glass on the sides and available in all colours. The popular Saltburn and Dalby stoves are simple in design, perfect for modern interiors, with levers instead of the usual spin wheels to control flow.

A Wood In April

By The Pastoral Poet Rabbits dash and play catch me if you can. Concerned, they run from pseudo enemies. Dew washed primroses, dazzle, spic and span Midst frothy beds of wood anemones. Spring flowers; Their infancy spent through storms. Their nursemaids were chill winds and nipping frost. Yet from enmity, these delicate forms, Show nothing of their beauty is lost. After the sun has banished clinging mists, In some nook, and fresh from dewfall’s wetting; Sweet violets sparkle like amethysts, Neatly placed in an emerald setting. But some are held in daylight penury; Deprived of light by a choking green baize Of dense wild garlic, and dog’s mercury, Nullifying the sun’s life giving rays. The trees no longer appear weatherworn, The white breast of the birch has a slick sheen. Sleek beeches salute the fresh April morn, Their fan-like branches drip a sappy green. The chiffchaff stutters his two noted song, Urging all songsters to follow his cue. Mellifluous notes will merge from the throng; A sweet crescendo is sure to ensue. Clive Milson

KEEPING VEHICLES ON THE ROAD IN RYEDALE The key to keeping your car on the road is a good service. Kev said: “While most main dealers will only carry out an oil and filter change and a visual check as part of its three years’ servicing package, we follow the recommended manufacturers’ guidelines, working to a service industry check sheet. This means the manufacturers’ warranty is protected. “We change the filters as required but we also remove the car wheels, clean the hubs, the brake discs and apply copper grease to brake mechanisms, keeping them working efficiently.”

I

f you have a car or a light commercial vehicle, then Pure Car Mechanics can help keep it on the road.

This respected family-run firm in Westgate Carr Road, Pickering, close to the main A170 road, was established in 2009.

Pure Car Mechanics remind customers when their MOT is due, offer a free collection and return of a vehicle from home or work, and a loan car (by prearrangement, for the cost of the fuel only). Kev and the team have a small number of cars for sale listed on their website and they also have a car sourcing service.

Owned by Kev Morris and Ange Snowden, the team has knowledge of a wide range of makes and models. MOTs, servicing, repairs, vehicle diagnostics, tyres supplied and fitted … in fact, a full range of garage services, all under one roof. Kev explained: “We know running a car or van is a necessary expense. We make it straightforward for customers as we outline the work needed. Bring your vehicle to Pure Car Mechanics and you know it’s in good hands.”

VETERINARY NURSES Veterinary Nurses work alongside the Veterinary Surgeons to provide a high standard of care to patients. While the main role of the Veterinary Nurse within practices goes on behind the scenes such as providing skilled supportive care for sick animals, monitoring patients during anaesthesia and much more; Veterinary Nurses play an important role in the education of owners of good standards of animal care. For that reason Nurse clinics such as Puppy health checks, post-operative checks, dental checks, weight clinics and mobility clinics can go a long way to help keep your pet happy and heathy. The road to becoming a Registered Veterinary Nurse requires a lot of hard work, and dedication to job which includes practical assessments, theoretical training and exams, which is an intense three year course. Nurse clinics are a great way of finding out preventative care and advice for your pet. For example our cuddle clinics can inform you how to prevent a wide range of problems in later life and give you advice to ease your worries about anything you may have about your new puppy. Senior clinics are used to identify and prevent the development of age-related problems and our obesity clinics are used to treat and prevent the recurrence of weight problems. For you, the owner Nurse clinics are a great way for a low- cost and often free advice about the best care for your pet, from a trusted and knowledgeable source. It can also be a nice and stress free visit for you and your pet enabling you both to get to know the nursing team, which you may not see on your normal visits to see the vet. At Station House Vets we have nurse clinics which are run by our professional and dedicated nursing team providing a large range of clinics for your pets, which include weight clinics, cuddle clinics (for puppies), worming clinics and many more. Many of the sessions are free of charge, or carry a small charge. Just give us a call to book an appointment or to find out more about the clinics which are normally slotted between 3.00pm-4.00pm on weekdays and 8.15am-11.15am on Saturdays. York Double Concert

e Ryedale Festival introduces its 2016 season to York audiences with a Double Concert in York’s two great medieval halls. Two short contrasting concerts are performed twice; the audiences will change places either side of the interval. In the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall the Heath Quartet evoke the world of War and Peace with Tchaikovsky’s noble and lyrical First String Quartet – its slow movement based on a Ukrainian folksong that famously moved Leo Tolstoy to tears.

In contrast, the Merchant Taylors’ Hall (this year celebrating its 600th anniversary) is the setting for an irresistible recital by one of the country’s leading musicians, Catrin Finch, known as ‘e Queen of Harps’, and former Royal Harpist to HRH e Prince of Wales.

Concerts to start at 7pm. Tickets £30 Contact the Festival Box Office on 01751 475777 or by email box.office@ryedalefestival.com 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

GARDEN VIEW

Spring Has Spung By Rachael Leverton Digging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets sprinkling them around shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in, giving the plants a boost. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the

70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

gaps elsewhere in the garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs! Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. Spread a good 3 inch layer of mulch around the border, between the plants. Choose from well-rotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely.

How to…

Plant a container-grown shrub. Soak the compost for an hour and make sure the rootball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Dig a hole that is larger than the rootball and work well-rotted gardencompost into the bottom. Mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub so that the top of the rootball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.

LIVE, LOCAL AND LOVING LIFE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE

S

ince Vale Radio hit the airwaves of DAB Digital Radio back in October 2015, we have loved every minute of being a part of local life from supporting local charities and helping them raise extra cash at events to giving them a truly powerful voice locally. Last year Vale Radio helped local charities raise over £60,000 and already this year we’ve helped raise over £46,000 for the likes of Ryedale Special Families, Martin’s House Hospice, York Flood Victims and many more. We have and are hosting many events in 2016, including York Floods Fund Raiser at The Ainsty, Squire’s Egg Run in Malton, Strensall Carnival, Apollo Festival, York Rescue Boat Annual Charity Ball, KirkbyMoorside and Thirsk Christmas Lights, Haxby Carnival and many more! The radio station broadcasts to a huge audience on DAB Digital Radio, but also on-line through our website and our free mobile app, downloadable through all app stores. To keep the radio station running costs over £6,000 a month, and we are able to cover this through advertising, sponsorship and community partnerships, with prices starting from just £25 a week. Plus, with our amazing partnership with Handy Mag, we are able to offer North Yorkshire Businesses some mega deals. To find out more about Vale Radio and what we can do for you and your group, event or business, please call 01904 765 900, visit www. thevaleonline.com or email studio@ thevaleonline.com www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 79
