elcome to our December edition which is a bonanza of Christmas services, fairs, parties and carol services. There is never a dull moment in York is there? The sheer variety of events taking place means that it’s pretty much impossible not to find some activity that floats your boat. This year I’m giving in to an office Christmas tree. We’ve never really had the space before but this year Nicky and Imogen are insisting on a full-blown tree with lights, all the trimmings and carols while we work! As we start working on our December edition in October, it was as much as I could do to hold them off until November. I’m sure this will all be good motivation when we start working on our January editions this month! As this is the last edition for 2018 I’d like to say some thank yous. Firstly to our many advertisers for supporting the magazine this year; from tradesmen to vets, shops to hotels and arts centres. Without you all we could not provide such a comprehensive service to our local area. Secondly, thank you to our posties. Getting our weighty tome out all over the area is no easy matter so a huge thank you for helping us spread the word to every home and business. Thirdly, to you, the people who read and use the magazine, thank you for supporting local. We’re a small independent publisher, not a large publishing conglomerate pretending to be home-grown and we’re passionate about supporting our local area bringing local businesses, community and events together in one place for the benefit of everyone. Finally I’d like to thank my brilliant team who have worked so hard in 2018 to make the magazine so successful. Here’s

SHORT STORY Christmas Carol
Chris and Sophie had become engaged after what Chris’s parents, Kevin and Jenny, considered a bit of a whirlwind romance, so inviting Sophie’s mum over for Christmas dinner had seemed like a good way for the two families to get to know each other. Carol had arrived earlier than expected, accompanied by a vibrant purple perm, flashing reindeer antlers and a crate of stout. “I’ll just park myself here.” She wedged herself at the kitchen table. “Pass me a bottle will you?” “I’m surprised our Chris didn’t offer you a lift,” Jenny said, taking a glass off the shelf. “It’s not how we brought him up, is it Kevin?” Carol knocked the cap off her stout on the edge of the table. “Men! My third husband treated his python better then he treated me.” “Have you been married three times, Carol?” Jenny stirred the bread sauce nervously. This was news. “I wish I’d stopped at three.” Carol shook her head. “Mind you,” she added with a belch, “I’m currently young, free and single.” She fluttered her eyelashes menacingly at Kevin, who affected a sudden fascination with the contents of the cutlery drawer. “Let’s hope divorce doesn’t run in the family,” Jenny laughed nervously, “for all our sakes.” “Nah, my daughter’s got her head screwed on right.” Carol waved her almost empty glass. “Of course, she was engaged to that chap from the fish market. Nice lad.” She took a final slurp. “Hold your horses I said to her, do you really want your curtains smelling of crab sticks?” “When was this?” Jenny asked casually, turning down the gas under the pan of sprouts. “It was after she’d called off the wedding to that other chap, who worked on the bins.” She adjusted her drooping antlers. “I wasn’t keen on him. He had really long arms.” “Is that right?” Jenny nudged Kevin. “And then there was that fella from Hartlepool.” Carol reached for another bottle. “I’d say, on average, she 20 | Handy Mag | December 2018
gets engaged every six months. I’ve stopped bothering the hat shop now.” Jenny looked at Kevin in alarm. “I wonder what’s holding the love birds up?” Jenny folded up a tea-towel decisively. “Kevin, could give me a hand with something in the hall?” “Certainly love.” Kevin followed her, relieved to be out of the kitchen. “Well that’s Christmas ruined,” Jenny whispered to him at the foot of the stairs. “Why’s that?” Kevin said. “Haven’t you been listening?” She wrung her hands on her apron. “Sophie’s going to break our poor boy’s heart.” “Here they are now,” he said, as the front door opened. “Sorry we’re late.” Chris, his arms laden with gifts, leaned over to kiss Jenny’s cheek. “Merry Christmas.” “What held you up?” Jenny said. “And where’s Sophie?” “We got talking to the Chadburns over the road.” He pushed the door shut with his foot. “Their nutty aunt hasn’t turned up and they’re panicking. Sophie and Rose are helping them call the police.” “Who’s Rose?” Kevin asked, relieving Chris of his load. “Sophie’s mum,” Chris said, taking off his coat. “Then who’s Carol?” Jenny asked. “Carol? That’s what the missing aunt’s called.” Chris sounded surprised. “Apparently she’s a bit of a handful.” By Jackie Brewster

Tokyo - A City of Contrasts
O
nce again in 2018, Tokyo has been ranked among the ‘most liveable cities in the world’ (Monocle), an impressive achievement for the biggest metropolis on the planet. Rebuilt after the war, the capital has few remnants from the past, at least at first sight, but today’s lofty architecture keeps you spellbound, from the elegant skyscrapers to the panoramic Sky Tower or the Rainbow Bridge gracefully stretching across the bay. A million trees have been planted to clean the air along the roads, lawns and flowers beckon in open parkland and Tokyo is safe, efficient and highly colourful with bright posters and lights, museums, theatres and immaculate restaurants with more Michelin stars than any other city. But this 21st century icon has a few surprises in store, especially around the lively Shibuya district where alongside shopping malls and super-sized 26 | Handy Mag | December 2018

Then the nearby Harajuku area is all about fun and creativity, with street art and parades in the most playful costumes you have ever seen.

Yet these excited youngsters with quirky clothes and fancy hair may turn up another day, beautifully dressed in kimonos for a traditional tea ceremony or a trip to Senso-ji, the most visited Buddhist temple in town. This is the Tokyo of the past with lanterns and prayers, fortune telling and lots of stalls around a bright red shrine and a five-tiered pagoda. According to legend, the temple was first built in the 7th century when two fishermen brothers found in their net a small statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Meanwhile in the Chiyoda ward, visitors look across the moat to the imperial palace, still home to the family and former site of the Edo castle, the seat of the shoguns whose power ended in 1868. Emperor Meiji then moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo which he renamed Tokyo, the ‘Eastern Capital’. Remembered as the ‘enlightened ruler’ who brought the country into the modern world, he is revered in Tokyo’s Meiji-jingu, the atmospheric Shinto shrine where locals come to pray or get wed in traditional style. The Shinto religion is based on respect for nature and is home to thousands of gods, but when the shrine was built in the 1920s the surrounding district had no natural world. So right at the heart of the capital, 100,000 trees were planted in seven years,

followed by many more and it is now a botanists’ paradise claiming hundreds of different species. Meiji would be pleased. Looking forward to the 2020 Olympics, his capital is now one of the world’s most dynamic cities but traditions linger and nature is part of the picture. From the nearby mountains to the outlying islands, 36% of the land in the Tokyo prefecture is protected by nature reserves and national parks. By Solange Hando

E
ach month over 250 victims from the North Yorkshire area make a report to Action Fraud about the fact that they may have been a victim of a fraud or scam. A quick analysis of these figures show that nearly 40% of scams reported are initiated over the telephone. This can be a bogus call from someone claiming to be from your bank, a police officer, an officer from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or some other official informing you that your account is under threat and you need to act fast. Recent examples include victims being called from someone claiming to be from the police stating your account is under threat and you need to attend your bank and either withdraw all your cash (and it will be collected for safety) or to transfer it to a different account. Other calls include persons claiming to be from Microsoft or BT claiming your computer is under threat and they then advise you to download a program (usually Team Viewer) which will allow the fraudster to take over your computer. Remember, if you are unhappy with the call, put the phone down and call the company from another phone. Scammers can keep the original line open, so when you think you are calling the bank, in reality you are speaking to the scammers. NEVER give account details to a stranger and NEVER allow a stranger access to your computer. As we approach Christmas we see an increase in websites promoting the must have gifts at seriously reduced prices. During my experience at Trading Standards, all too often the goods advertised did not arrive or they were obviously fake. Have a reality

THE GIFT OF A GREAT READ Stuck for the perfect present this Christmas? Or need some inspiration for your own wish list? Read on… FOR HISTORICAL FICTION FANS
Washington Black – Esi Edugyan 11-year-old slave Washington Black is taken from the sugar fields and lent to his tyrannical master’s brother, Titch, to work on a ‘cloudcutter’ hot air balloon. The duo form an unlikely friendship that, coupled with Washington’s artistic talent, could provide a way out of slavery.
FOR HISTORY BUFFS
Bloody Brilliant Women – Cathy Newman This book uncovers the ‘pioneers, revolutionaries and geniuses your history teacher forgot to mention’. Read about women such as engineer Beatrice Shilling, whose work played a role in helping RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain, and developmental biologist Anne McLaren, whose work paved the way for IVF.
FOR FOODIES
FOR PARENTS
Parent Alert, How To Keep Your Kids Safe Online – Nadia Sawalha, Kaye Adams and Will Geddes Thousands of kids will be receiving new smartphones or tablets this Christmas. But how do you make sure they’re not being bullied, giving too much information away to strangers or being targeted by predators? This book gives parents lots of actionable advice on how to keep kids safe online.
FOR HARRY POTTER FANS
The Crimes of Grindelwald – The Original Screenplay Albus Dumbledore enlists Newt Scamander to recapture Gellert Grindelwald, who’s recently escaped and is gathering followers. This is the second in the Fantastic Beasts series. It’s a screenplay of the recently released film, rather than a traditional novel, so it’s quicker to read but no less enjoyable.
Tasty Ultimate From quick and easy midweek dinners, to showstopping dinner party favourites, Tasty has them all. Recipes include Nashville Hot Turkey Tenders, Roast Pork Tex Mex Burritos, The Best Crispy Chicken Parmesan, Slow-Cooked Honey and Spice Lamb Shank, and Latte Coffee Cake. Recipes are simple to follow and bright photographs make every dish look mouth-wateringly tempting.

A Miracle on Hope Street – Emma Heatherington When she learns that one act of kindness has transformed a man’s life, Ruth decides to put her own loneliness aside and create a Christmas to remember for people in need. A heart-warming tale that’s perfect for fans of JoJo Moyes and Marian Keyes.

Why not make the most of your forest visit by staying a while or making a day of it? You can get some fresh air and stretch your legs by following a sign-posted family Christmas trail through the trees. FESTIVE ‘ELF’ & SAFETY
W
with C2 Safety
ith Christmas nearly here we are dusting off the decorations and festooning homes and workplaces with the fairy lights and tinsel. After untangling miles of wires we plan the task of fixing them along rooflines, chimneys, window displays and trees; this usually involves a ladder (or step ladder) and taking some simple actions can reduce the chance of you, or an employee, spending Christmas in a plaster cast (even more likely if you use chairs, boxes or other objects not designed for the job). It is a myth that health and safety bans the use of ladders in the workplace! 10 TOP TIPS FOR BASIC LADDER SAFETY: • Check the feet, legs and rungs are not damaged or bent before you begin and any rubber grips are in place • Ensure the locking mechanism locks out fully on step ladders • Place all ladder feet flat on the floor so the ladder is upright and stable and doesn’t wobble • Make sure the step ladder high enough so you do not have to stand on the top platform and the hand rail will be no lower than your waist height from where you are working • Ladders should be at a minimum angle of 70 degrees from the wall (an easy way to check is stand upright at the foot of the ladder and if it is at arms length away from you at shoulder height then it is approx. 70 degrees) • Use a ladder long enough for the job - you should never be working from the top few rungs • Have a second person to hold or “foot” the ladder whilst you are on it • Do not over-reach upwards or sideways from the ladder
• Maintain 3 points of contact with the ladder whenever possible • Where fall arrest systems are fitted to a commercial premises, or you are using a cherry picker, then a harness should be worn Every year there are many fires caused by Christmas lights and we should always check our lights at home to ensure they are serviceable; if they are buzzing, humming or flickering then they may not be working correctly and should be replaced. If you are a business and putting lights up in the workplace then they must comply with the Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and should be regularly PAT tested as you would your other electrical equipment at work. Here’s wishing everyone a safely illuminated Christmas from C2 Safety. Follow us on Facebook at @safetyc2 or contact us for a pragmatic Health and Safety service tailored to your business’s needs.

POTTED SMOKED SALMON
Serves 6. Ready in 30 minutes, plus chilling time INGREDIENTS:
• 275g honey roast salmon flakes • 250g smoked salmon slices, chopped • 100g unsalted butter, softened • 125g full-fat soft cheese • 2 tsp creamed horseradish • 1 tbsp lemon juice • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh dill sprigs and green peppercorns, to garnish • Slices of toasted brown or granary bread, to serve
This is the perfect starter for the lunch on the big day – you can make it the night before and the recipe will easily double up if you are feeding a crowd at Christmas!
CHRISTMAS MINCEMEAT SLICE
Makes 12-14 slices. Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
This delicious festive slice can be served warm as a pud with custard, thick cream or brandy butter or simply cool completely and serve instead of mince pies.
INGREDIENTS:
• 225g plain flour • 165g unsalted butter, chilled and diced • 1 egg yolk blended with 1 tbsp cold water • 75g caster sugar • 300g good quality mincemeat • 50g ground almonds • 2 tbsp flaked almonds 58 | Handy Mag | December 2018
1 2
Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles very fine breadcrumbs (alternatively pulse in a food processor until fine breadcrumbs). Remove 100g of the breadcrumb mixture and cover and chill in the fridge. Stir 25g of the sugar into the remaining mixture, then stir in the egg and water and mix to a firm dough (adding a little more water if needed). Knead lightly then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.
1 2
Reserve about 25g of the salmon flakes for garnish (cover and chill in the fridge until required).
3
Place the rest of the salmon flakes in a food processor with the smoked salmon, butter, soft cheese, horseradish and lemon juice. Process until smooth and creamy. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for a further few seconds.
Divide the mixture between 6 small ramekin dishes and level the surface. Cover and chill in the fridge until required. Garnish with the rest of the salmon flakes, dill sprigs and green peppercorns. Serve with toasted brown or granary bread.
TIP
Most supermarkets sell packs of ready-flaked honey roast salmon but if unavailable just buy ready-cooked smoked salmon fillets and roughly flake the fish, discarding any skin and fine bones.

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm square tart tin. Prick the pastry all over with a fork. Line the pastry case with baking paper and baking beans and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-7 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Cool slightly. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. Spread the mincemeat in the pastry case. Mix the rest of the sugar and the ground almonds into the reserved pastry crumb mixture and scatter over the mincemeat to cover completely. Return the tin to the oven and bake for a further 25-30 minutes or until the crumble topping is pale golden. Scatter over the flaked almonds and leave to cool before removing from the tin and cutting into 12-14 thin slices.
4 5 TIP
Add some finely chopped toasted hazelnuts or walnuts to the crumble topping for an extra nutty flavour.

A RUSTIC CHRISTMAS By Katherine Sorrell
T
he simplest of festive decorations can sometimes be the most appealing, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell
Who doesn’t love a natural look at home? And especially at Christmas, when present-buying, hosting guests, shopping, cooking and generally rushing around can all get a bit too much. Keeping your decorations simple and rustic is not only attractive and on-trend, but it also makes life easier and can be extremely cost-effective. Unpretentious and understated, natural decorations suit every home, large or small, modern or traditional, and make a fabulous, timeless alternative to commercialised glitz and glitter. The centrepiece of this look, ideally, is a real tree, which is best bought from a good local stockist. Choose one that’s as fresh as possible, make a new cut at the bottom, and display in a stand (a wicker basket is perfect) that holds a reservoir of water – it could need one or two litres every day. (Tip: the Nordmann Fir holds its needles really well.) Decorate generously, but don’t overload your tree, and keep to a limited colour scheme (white, red, green and brown are all great), using natural materials (see box). And, if you wish to add a touch of sparkle, twine the tree with small, plain white fairy lights. Feeling inspired? Spend a weekend making decorations with the family. Garlands of popcorn, 62 | Handy Mag | December 2018
nuts and paper strings of angels or snowflakes, or even gingerbread stars, all look adorable, and can be used everywhere in the home. Instead of shiny baubles, how about cutting simple shapes from felt and blanket-stitching them around the outside? Or making a wreath using clippings from the garden? Similarly, you can create wonderful decorations using sprigs of evergreens, ivy, pine cones (you could spray them with artificial snow), rose hips, dried seed heads and twigs (try lashing them together into a star shape). Or dry slices of apple and orange and tie them together with gardener’s string, adding cinnamon sticks and star anise. It will look and smell gorgeous. Of course, if you’re short of time, all these and more can be found in the shops, along with all sorts of irresistible decorations such as birch bark candle holders, driftwood Christmas trees and needlefelted and knitted owls, reindeer and robins. When it comes to wrapping presents, choose brown paper and string, or lengths of fabric and cotton ribbon, rather than foil that can’t be recycled. Use cardboard luggage labels and bear in mind that children might enjoy potato printing the plain paper for a little embellishment – white paint looks fantastic against the brown. As for receiving presents, there’s nothing nicer than a row of knitted stockings hanging by the fire, perhaps with some printed hessian sacks – widely available these days – for larger gifts.
Fresh flowers are fabulous at Christmas – a gorgeous reminder of springtime soon to come. Hyacinths are classic (and their scent will fill your home), as are amaryllis and poinsettias. They all look particularly special in white, of course. Wrap pots in hessian tied with string or pop groups of them into a wicker basket; you can decorate the tops of the pots with silver moss. Because this is a look where less is more, laying the festive table is easy. A linen runner or place mats, plain white china, clear glass (recycled and robust or cut crystal for a twinkle, whichever you prefer) and simple decorations such as bowls of pine cones or oranges studded with cloves, and perhaps a vase full of evergreens, twigs and boughs. Cosy, welcoming and unpretentious. Finally, add candles, small and tall, in rows along mantelpieces, in the centre of the dining table, on simple iron candelabra, in advent displays – anywhere their flickering glow will make you feel happy. Alternatively, tea lights look pretty inside old jam jars, which is safer if you have young children around. Pop a mince pie in the oven and heat some mulled wine on the hob, and here it is – a very merry Christmas.
INGREDIENTS FOR A NATURAL CHRISTMAS Hessian Twigs, branches and boughs Linen and cotton ribbon Brown paper and string Greenery and berries from the garden Moss Dried, sliced apples and oranges Cinnamon sticks and star anise Gingerbread Felt Hyacinths, amaryllis and white poinsettias Candles Pine cones

MOTORING
The Wackiest Special Editions A veneer inlaid with a falcon graphic features on the car’s passenger-side trim piece and is made up of 430 separate hand-placed pieces.
SKODA FELICIA FUN
Manufacturers love making special editions, weird and wonderful creations that showcase what car makers can do when they let their imaginations run wild. Here, we’ve picked out eight of the wackiest.
BENTLEY BENTAYGA BY MULLINER FLY FISHING
The Bentley Bentayga is a decent combination of luxurious craftsmanship and go-anywhere all-wheeldrive capability. However, the Fly Fishing by Mulliner edition is fitted with bespoke rod tubes trimmed in saddle leather and a central storage station to give specific storage for rods, reels and flies, as well as a waterproof wader stowage trunk.
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF HARLEQUIN
The Golf is one of the best-selling cars of all time and comes in a variety of colours, specifications and body styles. The Harlequin, however, was slightly out of the ordinary. Produced for just one year from 1996, just 264 colourful Golf Harlequins were produced, made as a result of the popularity of the Polo Harlequin.
SSANGYONG KORANDO SPORTS DMZ
The ‘regular’ Korando Sports pick-up was a success for South Korean-based SsangYong; it was impressive off-road and had a generous amount of standard equipment. The special DMZ edition, however, came with camouflage paint and either stood out from or blended into the crowd – whichever you preferred – giving the Korando Sports a beefy, military edge.
BENTLEY BENTAYGA FALCONRY
Another Bentayga catering for a very niche pastime, the Bentayga Falconry by Mulliner features a removable ‘transportation perch’ and has a variety of trim pieces crafted from cork. 64 | Handy Mag | December 2018
The Skoda Felicia Fun came with a bright yellow exterior matched by an equally jazzy interior, with yellow accents on the steering wheel, gearstick and main dials. The trick up its sleeve was a rear bulkhead that could be extended to reveal two rear seats with a convertible section above, meaning four people could come along for the ride.
ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH ‘LUMINARY COLLECTION’
Rolls-Royce is noted for staggeringly impressive – and staggeringly expensive – special editions. The Wraith ‘Luminary Collection’ was limited to just 55 examples and uses a specially-developed ‘Sunburst Grey’ exterior paint. Inside, the main dashboard is fitted with 176 individual LEDs, designed to resemble ‘the trailing light of a shooting star’. Nice.
DS3 BLACK LEZARD
The DS3 is a car built on the ability to customise its every aspect, and the Black Lezard edition is a more luxurious version. For instance, the Lezard design, mimicking the look of lizard skin, is hand applied, taking two hours per vehicle. The interior of the car is finished in high-quality leather, and gloss black trim is used to help lift the overall look of the cabin.
RANGE ROVER EVOQUE SPECIAL EDITION WITH VICTORIA BECKHAM In 2012, Range Rover revealed a special edition version of its Evoque SUV made in partnership with Victoria Beckham. The exterior is hand-finished in matte grey paint, while the alloy wheels feature gloss black paint and rose gold detailing. Inside, the four seats are finished in high-quality leather with contrasting white ‘baseball’ stitching. Prices were impressively high, coming in at a weighty £79,995. By James Baggott

CHRISTMAS DANGERS FOR PETS by Dr Sarah Hunter (BVet Med MRCVS) Station House Vets CHOCOLATE
There is usually a lot of chocolate around at Christmas, especially when we start with advent calendars! Chocolate can be very toxic to dogs so it is important to keep it out of their reach. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous as it contains a higher quantity of the chemical compound theobromine. Signs of poisoning include vomiting, tummy pain, wobbling and diarrhoea.
DRIED FRUIT
A
s Christmas approaches, we start to fill our homes with decorations, food and plants, some of which can be harmful to our furry friends. Read on to find out which ones to avoid.
POINSETTIA
Grapes and dried grapes (currants, sultanas and raisins) are toxic to dogs. Even a small quantity can cause severe kidney failure. Don’t forget this will include food items that contain dried fruits such as mince pies. With all toxins, it is important to let us know straight away if you think your pet has eaten something that they shouldn’t have, especially if they are showing any abnormal signs.
Although it is toxic, very few animals will develop signs of intoxication after eating the plant. However if they eat enough of it, signs will include irritation to the mouth, drooling and vomiting.
SALT DOUGH DECORATIONS
Often homemade salt dough is used to make decorations, although the recipes vary, they usually contain around 8g of salt per tablespoon of dough. If your pet has too much salt in their body, they could develop vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, increased thirst and dehydration. In severe cases, it can cause seizures.
Unique Dog Walking Service
Adventure dogs will travel to exciting rural locations and enjoy full interaction, fun and socialisation as well as exercise. 1.5 hour Adventure Dog Walks £35. Dog Day Care £50. Cat visits for feeding and fuss £10 per half hour. Pet First Aid, DBS, Fully Insured.

Bella came to the centre after her owner could no longer take care of her, she has led a very sheltered life in her previous home so is nervous about meeting new people. We are looking for a home with patient owners who will let her settle in her own time, we will need an adult only home in a rural location for her with no busy roads. Toby came to the centre after living life on the streets, he was being fed by some kind people, but he is now looking for his own special person who will love and cherish him and make him part of their family.
Y
He is quite a shy guy to begin with so will need a little time and patience for him to settle and grow in confidence. He would be suitable to live with another cat and children of secondary school age year 9 and over.

CYRIL WOULD LOVE TO FIND A NEW HOME IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
oung Cyril is a shy cat that really needs a lucky break and is hoping that you can help! Cyril was brought in to York Cats Protection when his previous owner ran into financial problems and was unable to keep the numerous cats she had acquired. Because Cyril was having to live and compete with so many other cats he was somewhat neglected and overlooked, and this has made him somewhat timid when he meets new people and encounters new situations. Fortunately, this handsome chap is slowly coming round and once he starts to get to know you he displays his true colours. After a while it soon transpires that Cyril really does quite enjoy a gentle fuss (despite what he might say at first!) and his favourite thing is playing with a ‘fishing rod’ toy - this lad loves nothing more than destroying a feather on a piece of string! The staff at Cats Protection are confident that once Cyril finds a new home he will soon blossom into a very friendly cat and it won’t be long before he can start living a full and exciting adventure filled life, like all cats deserve.

Cyril ideally needs a quiet new home with patient and understanding new owners. Due to his past Cyril will be much happier being the only pet in his new home and he probably won’t be too confident around young children. Hopefully we can find this bonnie chap a new home before Christmas! For further details about Cyril please contact York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 or via the contact page at www.york.cats.org.uk

Here at Battle Flatts we have a long standing tradition of supporting local animal welfare charities and at this time of year like to give the local charities a boost by collecting donations of tinned and dried pet foods, treats, toys, bedding. Each of our branches are collection points and anyone wishing to donate can bring their gifts and leave them under the Christmas tree. It’s surprising how many animals local charities look after and rehome each year, and Christmas-time being a busy time for theses charities, it’s amazing that every year with the gifts we get donated we are able to pass these on and give less fortunate pets a happier Christmas. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has donated to our collection in the past and hope that this year we can continue to support help and support animals in need. Donations can be left under the Christmas tree at any of our branches: 43 St Nicholas Street Norton, Buttercrambe Road Stamford Bridge, 38 The Village Strensall or 88 Klinwick Road Pocklington

GARDENS LTD
GET FIT AND GARDEN! by Pippa Greenwood
I
t’s been great to have a bit of a slow-down , but if, like me, you’ve done a bit too much slowing down, have been lazing about and perhaps eaten a little more than you should, then now’s the time to jump into action! There’s nothing like some time in the garden to clear your head, get the blood moving around your body and wear off a bit of the seasonal excesses. Fresh, cool air will wake you up and get you thinking positively, and your garden will appreciate what you do – plus you may also manage to escape from anyone who’s driving you round the bend. So jump to it and get out in the garden or down to the allotment. A rake over with a spring-tined rake will be just what the lawn needs to remove damp, clogged-up leaves that, if left in place, will cause patches of faded, miserable grass. It’ll be good for the upper arm muscles too! Make sure that you collect and bag up

all the leaves, and allow them to rot down and make leaf mould, a brilliant and free soil conditioner. If the soil in cleared areas is sufficiently dry, take the opportunity to fork it over – this will help the frosts to break up heavier clay soils. It will also expose lurking grubs and other soil pests, giving the birds a useful snack and helping you to minimise pest problems next year. If the soil is not too wet, you can get some digging done too, but make sure you limber up well before
you start. Keeping your back straight and your knees bent helps to reduce the risk of back injury and strains – but take it gently! Winter is a good time to carry out pruning of apple and pear trees. Make sure your secateurs are good and sharp and start by removing dead, dying and diseased branches, as well as those that are causing the crown of the tree to be too congested. While the garden is not being used that much, take the opportunity to re-set any loose brick or similar edging around paths, beds and steps, replacing any stones, pavers or bricks that have broken or cracked. Carefully clear debris, dead foliage and stems from

flower beds. Some plants that were still living when you did an autumn tidy may now have died back, so a simple clear up will make the bed look so much better. Remember not to go too far, and do leave some dry foliage and stems over the bases or crowns of plants, especially those of the more tender perennials such as penstemons.
Smooth, hard surfaces in the garden such as patios, paths and steps can become really dangerous if algae and debris are allowed to build up on them over the winter. This layer may look insignificant but can become seriously slippery, especially when wet. A stiff brush or yard broom and plenty of elbow grease is the best solution I know.
LIMBER UP! After a bit too much time inside, and especially when the weather is cold, it’s easy to do yourself a bit of damage when you suddenly spring into action. Make sure you: • Wear plenty of clothing when you go outside – have lots of layers and remove them gradually as you warm up. • Do a few gentle limbering-up exercises before you start work to slowly loosen up your arms, legs and especially your back. • Don’t do any single task for too long – instead rotate the jobs, perhaps spending ten minutes on one thing, ten minutes on another, then ten on a third, and then go back to the first. This way you won’t put any one area of your body under too much strain. • Give yourself regular, short breaks and don’t forget to drink enough, especially once you start warming up! • Don’t forget to bend your knees when lifting and if in doubt call on a friend, relative or neighbour to give you a hand. You can always return the favour another time.

The combination of wet weather and extreme winds can cause a lot of shrubs and trees to become loosened in the soil. Use the heel of your foot to refirm the soil around the root area, checking that the plant is still in the soil at the right level, adjusting if necessary. You’re bound to feel better after all that air and exercise in your plot, but do take time to wrap up warm again and reward yourself with a nice cuppa while you sit and admire your handiwork – before heading inside for a nice hot bath! www.pippagreenwood.com
