Editors Letter elcome to the April edition of the Handy Mag Ryedale.
Firstly, an apology to those who attempted our crossword last month. You will have noticed that the clues didn’t fit with the grid! Also the O’Leary the Leprechaun Competition had the wrong close date. I’ve checked more carefully this month to make sure all is ok! It seems that with Spring things are picking up for our local businesses. With a lot of new businesses joining the Handy Mag, it has been a big challenge this month fitting everything in. I think that next month the Handy Mag will have to go bigger if I’m to accommodate all of the business and community content and other features there for your interest. Well done to Mrs Chapman of Huntington for winning the ’Pablo the Painter’ competition in the February editions. This month there’s ‘Lucy the Lamb’ to search for (see page 28). I love receiving all of your competition entries, especially from children who have drawn a picture of the cartoon character they have been looking for! One day I promise to publish some of these comments and drawings. Thank you to anyone who joins in.. Don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 3rd April! Thank you to everyone who supports the businesses advertising in The Handy Mag. Until next month and Happy Easter...
Marianne ps If you have anything you wish to place in the May edition, the deadline is Tuesday 5th April.

hen you hire a joiner to work in your home, it’s essential they do what they say they’re going to do. Ryan McGinty offers a traditional, old-fashioned guarantee – his word of honour. He’ll respect you and your home, be polite and friendly and leave your home clean and tidy. And in four years of trading Ryan has been true to his word – he hasn’t received a single complaint. Traditional Craftsman If you live in a listed building or a Conservation Area, Ryan is fully qualified to use traditional woodwork techniques, ensuring the results of his craftsmanship will look right and comply with all regulations. Malton choirs join hands for first “big sing”
T
wo of Malton’s newest choirs join forces Saturday April 2nd for the first time for what organisers say will be one of the biggest adult choral events in the town for years with about 70 singers taking part. Harmonia Ladies Choir, created in 2008, will join Malton District Male Voice Choir, founded in 2007, for a feast of musical entertainment in St Michael’s Church, Malton at 7.30. Payment of £5 is at the door. Harmonia, more than 40 strong, is directed by Alison Davis, while Malton District Male Voice Choir, with about 30 singers, is under the baton of Chris Gulley. The choirs have never performed together before but are linked by
a common rehearsal venue in Malton Methodist Church and by husband and wife couples in the two choirs. “It’s good for local choirs to collaborate like this and promote choral singing in the community”, said Alison Davis, who directed a children’s choir in Scarborough before establishing Harmonia. Male Voice Choir Chairman Tom Todd said “the fact that these two young choirs can already field 70 adult voices between them is further proof that singing is alive and well in Malton”. The Male Voice choir has just recruited its youngest member,
16-year-old Philip Jennings. Chris Gulley said there was “a comradeship in the choir similar to that in sport”. Singing was also “good for the health and much more physical than people realise”, he said. Details of concert and choirs from: Alison Davis on 01653-698561 and Tom Todd on 01653 692362

cause serious harm to health if breathed in over a long period. In extreme cases paralysis and brain damage can be caused as a result of prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide.
THIS MEANS THAT OIL AND SOLID FUEL APPLIANCES AS WELL AS GAS APPLIANCES PRODUCE CARBON MONOXIDE GASES AS WELL.
Gas fires and other open flued appliances ( typically older boilers) are at the highest risk as if there is a problem with the flue or chimney the appliance may carry on working, potentially filling living areas with lethal gases. Modern boilers are typically much safer, but should still be serviced annually to make sure that there are no defects and that the appliance is running as efficiently as possible.
Carbon-based fuels are safe to use, it is only when the fuel does not burn properly (usually due to poor installations, or lack of servicing) that excess CO is produced, which is poisonous. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it but carbon monoxide can kill quickly without warning. According to the HSE statistics around 20 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been properly installed, maintained or that are poorly ventilated. Easter Gathering
10.45 am Good Friday 22nd April Market Place Malton
So what is the ‘real’ meaning of Easter? Why ‘Good’ Friday? Many of us remember it is a religious festival but has its significance and relevance been lost? This year on Good Friday the Churches in Southern Ryedale are gathering in Market Place, in front of St Michael’s Church and inviting everyone who would like to join us to remember the ‘Good’ in the Easter story. We will sing accompanied by a band, brass band and choir, look at the Easter Story, discover its impact for today and celebrate what we now call the ‘Good News’. Following the service there will be an event for the whole community full of lots of family fun, games, crafts, music, displays and a selection of refreshments and food. The event is FREE and open to everyone. Why not come and join us on this special holiday and together let’s put the ‘good’ back into Good Friday! For more information call: 01653 697796 or go to: www.elimryedale. net

ideas
for your home or garden
A
creative and inexpensive garden revamp can be done well on a tight budget.
Modern wisdom says “don’t move, improve”, but that doesn’t mean putting your dream home on hold. The kind of outdoor space you’ve always wanted to enjoy could be literally on your doorstep. Rock and Stone owner Colin Keast is an experienced landscape gardener and he and his two-man team at their stone display centre in Vertigrow are full of creative ideas for using stone outside – and inside – the home. The firm is renowned for its collection of unusual stoneware – but they’ve also one of the biggest selections of paving, walling, decorative gravel and tiles in the area. Colin said: “I enjoy talking to the customers, and we can always find ways of helping them create what they’re looking for, even when money’s tight.” “For example, instead of having a big paved area, you can use some good quality gravel with the odd paving stone dotted between. Indian stone is reasonably priced but gravel is cheaper, cheaper to lay and can create a really nice effect” Beautiful natural stone can be brought inside the home, too, with a wide selection of quality tiles and fireplace hearths. Everything is sold at trade prices – meaning massive savings can be made on even the smallest pieces. Rock and Stone is the place to find ornaments and gifts for inside the home that will certainly not be found anywhere else – marble wine coolers from the Philippines, for example, or stylish stone sinks to be mounted on a vanity unit in the bathroom. An endless supply of unusual pieces from all over the world include beautiful polished table and bench sets of basalt, granite or teak, fossilised trees, standing stones, traditional stone troughs and elegant statues of all sizes.
tits seem to have moved into Rock and Stone permanently. Children love counting the different types of stone animal – a menagerie of elephants, meerkats, herons, dragons, dogs and cats add up to more than 20 – and there’s a garden centre and cafe on site, too. Browsers are always welcome to explore seven days a week – it’s a great value family afternoon out or stop-off on the way back from a trip to York. Rock and Stone’s trade depot at Elvington is also open to the public every day except Sunday. To get a flavour of what can be discovered, visit the website at www.rockandstoneyork. co.uk, call the depot on 01904 608300 or the display centre at Vertigrow on 01904 400972.

Who ever thought a flat roof could be beautiful? Kiss goodbye to ugly, leaky felt... the latest in contemporary building design is Cure - It’s GRP Waterproofing System, a smooth, flexible and ultrareliable solution for flat roofs.
R
ising Builders recently completed an example in Twickenham which looks fantastic – if they do say so themselves! GRP has the potential to outlast the structures it is protecting and comes with a 20-year guarantee on both the materials and the workmanship. It’s smooth, maintenance-free, fire retardant and can be used over any combination of gullies and gutters, or even pitched roofs, and comes in a variety of finishes in any colour. And what’s more, it’s more than a roof – it can also work as a base for a balcony, roof garden or pond. Adding modern features to your home is easy with Rising Builders – high-rise roofs with dormer windows, contemporary kitchens and Inglenook fireplaces are all featured in the portfolio of work successfully completed by Andy Rising and his team. into bedrooms and yards into stables. Last winter, they turned a bungalow into a two-storey, five-bedroom luxury home, working around the family, who enjoyed a warm and damp-free Christmas in their own home during the project. Rising Builders work locally from their base in Pickering on homes throughout Ryedale and between York and Scarborough. The team of four consists of Andy Rising, two fully qualified builders, and his wife Jo, who takes care of the paperwork and keeps everyone organised. With a trusted electrician and plumber joining the team where needed, and years of experience in design and build, Rising Builders Ltd continue to offer a complete service from start to finish. Trust is a major part of the Rising package – they are fully registered with CITB, members of the Federation of Master Builders and Andy has a Construction Site Manager’s certificate. Every major job is assessed
and planned together with a local Structural Engineer with years of experience working with the council, and all work is in line with modern building regulations. Rising Builders produce extensive quotes with details of the materials to be used, and also the timescale of the project, to minimise unnecessary disruption. Jo Rising said: “Our detailed quotations mean customers can refer to them throughout the work – they tick off jobs as we do them, so they keep complete ownership of the project, and they can pay with confidence knowing exactly what was agreed. “All of our customers come back to us, sometimes after years have passed, because we place so much importance on developing trust relationships with everyone we work for.” To talk about your building project, call Rising Builders on 01751 472124 or visit their website at www.risingbuilders. co.uk.

Five Big Cool French Cars
T
here’s something about big French cars that’s rather cool. They French cars are not usually huge sales hits in the UK, but a combination of quirky styling and laid back comfort make them attractive buys. There are some things you’ll have to put up with: Some have residual values that lose money faster than Greece, reliability can be slightly disappointing and some people will laugh at you. But not us – we’ll salute you as you waft by with a whiff of diesel, floating along on a bed of air suspension. Here, we pick our five favourites.
Citroen DS Big French cars don’t get more iconic than the incredible DS. Citroen sold nearly 1.5m of them during its 20-year production run between 1955 and 1975. It was packed with futuristic technology such as self-leveling suspension and directional headlights, but it’s those stylish looks that make it really cool. A decent DS will cost you around £30k now.
Renault Vel Satis The Vel Satis was an undeniable sales flop – even Renault’s top brass admit it (http://aol.it/eUQ9mt) – but that, in our eyes, makes it even more desirable. At launch its price put a lot of people off, but we think the unique design, spacious interior and silky diesel engine make it a worthwhile purchase. And the fact you can pick them up for just £2k now makes them very attractive!
Citroen SM Citroen has a habit of producing wacky cars, so when it teamed up with Maserati to build the SM in 1970, the result was always going to be bonkers. The SM didn’t only look amazing but was packed with tech, including speed-sensitive steering and directional headlights. Maserati took care of the engine, slotting a V6 unit under the bonnet, and the French firm sorted the styling – the collaboration resulted in the creation of a classic.
Renault Alpine A610 Attempting to take on the Porsche 944 with a plastic-bodied Renault was, in hindsight, never going to be a success. But that doesn’t mean the Alpine A160, launched in 1991, isn’t cool. It’s got all the right ingredients – a 250bhp turbo-charged lump positioned in the back, rear-wheel drive and sleek 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
looks. Add the fact it had a habit of snapping like a breadstick on the limit and, in our eyes, it’s even more appealing.
Citroen C6 Here’s a classic in the making. Well, at least that’s what we reckon. The C6 has all the hallmarks of a future appreciator: Mental looks, sublime comfort and the usual amount of specification marvels including double-glazing, head-up display and clever suspension. But what we really love about the C6 is the looks – the dramatic nose and unique rear mark it out against German rivals and makes buying one a real statement. Spring Your Clean Garden
With the flowers blooming and new leaves appearing on the trees, April is a time when most of us like to have a bit of a tidy-up and revitalise the garden for summertime.
W
hether you’re preparing for the growing season, or simply wanting to improve the look of your garden, we have some great ideas to give your green space a good spring clean.
Throw out the old plants
Start by removing dead annuals or plants showing any sign of disease, and pull up invading weeds - but don’t add them to your compost bin. Any bulbs which have finished flowering will need deadheading, but don’t remove the leaves as they will provide the energy for next year’s growth. Some shrubby plants with woody stems, such as buddleia and lavender, will need to be pruned in order for new blooms to appear on the freshly-cut branches.
Patios, paths and rough edges
A little touching up here can make the world of difference. Start by trimming overhanging grass from the edges of your patio, pathways and borders, and check to see if any stepping stones have sunk below ground height – if they have, raise them so that loose soil won’t cover them when it rains. Brush off any old leaves from your patio before giving it the once-over with a pressure washer. If you don’t mind a bit of graft, scrub with a specialist path and patio cleaner. Finally, pull out any invasive weeds from the gaps between the patio stones, and lift up encroaching moss.
Bring your grass up to scratch
If all the trudging around in mud hasn’t done your garden any favours, it’s well worth investing in a lawn fertiliser, which will make your grass lovely, thick and green – as well as preventing weeds and moss from forming. If you have a real problem with the latter, find a feeding product which incorporates weed-killer. At this time of year, aeration is also important: you don’t need any flashy equipment – by piercing holes with a pitchfork about 4 inches deep evenly across areas where the lawn is suffering, you’ll improve drainage which will do wonders for the grass.
Treat garden furniture
To prolong the life of your garden furniture, it will need a yearly service to remove any rust spots and prevent against decay. Your wooden furniture will benefit from a good rub down and coating of varnish or teak oil. 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Prepare the soil
If you plan to grow some fruit and veg, purchase a soil-testing kit from your local garden centre. Once you know what kind of earth you’re dealing with, you can improve its quality by adding various nutrients. Beds and vegetable patches will benefit from the removal of stones, twigs and plant debris, a good dig, and the addition of some organic matter such as rotted-down horse manure and a layer of mulch.
Give your pond some life
Start by getting rid of dead leaves, fallen branches and old plants, but don’t throw these – instead, try replanting in new soil. Next, remove the pump, replace the filter and check everything still works properly. If you have any paving slabs, give them a bit of a scrub and tidy back any overhanging plants. Note however that if you have fish, try not to cause too much of a disturbance as they are still in winter mode.
Get growing
The weather is warming up and now is the ideal time to cultivate some seedlings. Start off with some tomatoes, sunflowers, salad leaves and chillies, and place them somewhere warm, ready for the sun when summer comes. Clean all your old pots with a scrubbing brush, re-plant your window boxes and, finally, sit back and enjoy! by Victoria Poolman

Paving Installer
I
He offers his service to both domestic and commercial customers and has a long list of satisfied local clients.
Richard Flynn has built up his successful company Pave-a-way over the last 6 years, having spent 12 years working for others gaining the experience and skills necessary to provide an excellent paving service.
In addition to new installations, Richard has started providing a driveway cleaning service. “It seemed a natural progression from paving,” Richard explained. “We can now help brighten up homes that already have suitable driveways and patios but just need a little care and attention.”
s your driveway or patio in need of some attention? Could your home do with some ‘kerb appeal’?
Pave-a-way can install new driveways and patios but also provide a wide range of other services to smarten any home and garden. Richard uses high quality materials sourced from local businesses and can advise on which material would be best to enhance your home and suit the surroundings.
This service includes the cleaning of paving and patios using a 3600psi cold water pressure washer coupled with a flat surface cleaner. Paving can then be sealed using a high quality sealer to ensure that your drive or patio remains weed free and stable. This also reduces future
staining and enhances the natural colour of the stone. Richard takes a great deal of pride in his work and no job is too small. From initial visit and quotation, to the finished project, Richard ensures that his work is of the highest quality. He places importance on communicating with you, the customer, throughout the work ensuring that you are happy with the end product. Richard’s portfolio is available to view and references are available from many satisfied customers. For more information, give Richard a call on 01653 699648 or 07956 251580.

Save energy, save money Stuart Collins, an electrician with over 17 years experience, recommends the VPhase Voltage Optimiser as the smart new way to cut your energy costs immediately without changing your lifestyle or supplier. What is VPhase? VPhase is a device that reduces and manages the voltage coming into your home ensuring your electrical appliances use less electricity and cost less to run. It will also lower your carbon emissions. “The device is simple to install by a qualified electrician alongside your fuse box” says Stuart, ”And it requires no maintenance. It is simply a matter of fit, forget and save instantly!”
reduces this voltage and maintains it at 220V, saving you energy and money as a result. Large companies have been saving millions for years using this technology, but it’s not been available to homeowners and small businesses until now. Once installed, it will deliver immediate savings across the whole home and you can still enjoy the benefits of your household appliances, as VPhase will work without you having to change your lifestyle.
Installing a VPhase is very similar to topping up loft insulation in terms of the cost to install and investment return. Savings of up to £80 a year off average electricity bills have been demonstrated. The amount of energy saved will depend on the incoming voltage and the type of appliances in the house.
How does it work? The voltage coming into your home is typically around 245V in the UK, but many of your appliances will actually work more efficiently and use less electricity at a much lower voltage. The VPhase device
Awards The VPhase device has scooped a number of prestigious awards at the UK Electrical Industry Awards. It was recognised as the most innocative new technology for the domestic environment delivering immediate and significant money and energy savings across the whole home.
Local Installer Phoenix Electrical Services, based in Norton and owned by Stuart, is able to install this device into any home in the Ryedale area. Stuart is fully qualified and NICEIC registered. If you are interested in saving money on your electricity using this device, Stuart will come and give you a free estimate and talk through the installation procedure which may require a full test of electrical circuits. “The exact installation cost will depend on the age of the circuits in each property,” says Stuart. “We assess each property separately but in a modern home, installation can take as little as a morning’s work.”
Warranty and Payback The manufacturer quotes the payback period on a VPhase unit as between 3 - 5 years and there is a 5 year warranty on all units making it a risk free investment for any homeowner. More information can be found at www.vphase.co.uk. Why not start saving money on your electricity now? Give Stuart a call on 07968

Easter Vanilla Cupcakes 01904 468777
Young people of all ages love baking especially at Easter. Try these delicious vanilla cupcakes and decorate them with an Easter theme. The cupcake frills in the photo can be bought at most supermarkets and will make your cupcakes look extra special!
Ingredients (makes 12) 225g caster sugar 110g unsalted butter, softened at room temperature 3 medium eggs 150g self raising flour 125g plain flour 120ml milk 1 vanilla pod, split in two lengthways
Buttercream icing
110g unsalted butter softened, at room temperature 60ml milk, at room temperature 1 teaspoon good quality vanilla extract 500g icing sugar, sifted
Method 1. Put the milk in a small pan with the vanilla pod and bring to the boil. Immediately remove from the heat and leave to infuse until it reaches room temperature. Remove the vanilla pod and using the tip of a knife scrape the seeds out and return them to the milk.
– I like mini chocolate eggs and sprinkles, or choose from the wide selection of cake decorations available or use small sweets. You can of course colour the icing too – add a drop at a time of your chosen food colouring to build the colour gradually. 10. A note for any young people attempting these cupcakes – don’t forget to do the washing up and leave the kitchen tidy!
2. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas mark 4. Line a 12 hole muffin tin with cupcake cases. 3. Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until pale and fluffy using an electric hand mixer. Add the eggs, one at a time beating well after each one. 4. Mix the two flours. Create a smooth batter by adding the flours and vanilla infused milk, gradually in two or three stages beating well.
Wine Tasting
5. Alternatively for speed but not half as much fun - put all the ingredients into a food processor and whiz until you have a cake batter.
Thursday 31st March 6 - 9pm
6. Spoon the mixture evenly into the cases. Bake for 25 minutes until cooked and golden brown and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. 7. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes or so before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. 8. While the cupcakes are cooling make the icing – using an electric hand mixer, mix the butter, milk, vanilla extract and half the icing sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Gradually add the rest of the icing sugar until you have a thick creamy icing. 9. When the cupcakes are completely cold ice and decorate with your choice of Easter decoration 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Don’t miss the opportunity to sample over 100 wines from around the world. The tasting will take place at Sundella House, Sheepfoot Hill, Castlegate. Tickets £5 each, available from Derventio or on the door. All ticket proceeds to be donated to a local charity. Enquiries to info@tatesmith.com or on 01653 693196

TRAVEL
Sunset on
Everest
You have to earn your first view of the mighty Everest range.
F
rom the Lukla airstrip, a short flight from Kathmandu, it takes a day and a half, trekking through pine forests, past lodges framed in dahlias and rhododendrons, across dizzying bridges and up the long steep spur of the Namche Hill. Now and then, you flatten yourself against the cliff face to let pack animals and porters scrape past. Far below, the foaming waters of the Bhote Kosi roar through an invisible gorge. At last, the pretty Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar appears, clinging to the very edge of the precipice, all pastel roofs and frilly awnings, prayer flags wavering like giant plumes and stepped alleyways where men carve Buddhist scriptures on the boulders and trekkers bargain for turquoise and Tibetan rugs. At 3340 metres, in the Everest National Park, Namche is the place to acclimatise for a day or two and enjoy glorious mountain views, here the holy summit of Khumbila, there the fluted walls of Thamserku or the snowfields of Kongde and on the horizon, the dark windswept cone of Everest. Spring is the best time for rhododendrons, autumn for 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
clear views. From Namche, Bazaar, it is a fairly easy stretch to Tengboche, the most sacred monastery in the Khumbu region, perched all alone on a wooded ridge. Boy monks scrub their laundry at the gate, chanting drifts from the temple, punctuated by cymbals and drums, and the twin peaks of Ama Dablam rise hauntingly, so close you could almost touch them. Beyond, the land is bleak and you pass only a few hamlets with tiny potato fields and yak dung drying for fuel on stone walls. Sometimes, wild Himalayan goats bound on the slopes and pheasants in iridescent rainbow colours peck on the edge of the trail. Onto the forlorn village of Dingboche then Lobuche, past myriad stone chortens lined up on the pass, each one a shrine to someone who died in these parts. Now it is high time to eat garlic soup to thin the blood and fill up on energy food, pancakes, potato bread, vegetable rolls the size of a family pie. After a week of toiling up and down slopes and one last scramble over a moraine, anyone reasonably fit can reach Gorak Shep, the original base
camp at over 5000 metres, now with a few lodges, tucked in a moonscape of tortured land and ice with gaping crevasses and the great cascade of the Khumbu Icefall. Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Choyu, mountains rise in a magnificent amphitheatre across the Tibetan border, but Everest remains stubbornly out of sight, hidden by a lower but closer ridge. So, to set eyes on the panorama of a lifetime, you have to climb even higher and tackle the seemingly easy but breathtaking, knee-jerking Kalapatar, the Black Rock above Gorak Shep, towering at 5623 metres. Slowly, Everest appears above Nuptse, rising higher and higher, and when the sun dips in the west, the whole mountain rumbles and groans as huge blocks of ice crash down the slopes. All around the peaks come to life, shimmering pink and gold in the dying light. Suddenly, sharp as a knife, darkness falls right across the land but for a long time, on the roof of the world, Everest continues to glow, a lonely beacon in a starlit sky. By Solange Hando

OUTSTANDING CHOIR TO LAUNCH 2011 RYEDALE FESTIVAL Consortium
Friday May 6th 7.30pm at St Peter’s Church, Norton An unmissable event staged by the Ryedale Festival – the jewel in Yorkshire’s cultural crown - is the visit by the internationally renowned chamber choir Consortium to perform the launch concert of the 2011 Ryedale Festival. The choir were to have sung in Ryedale last November but were forced to cancel following the heavy snowfall which afflicted North Yorkshire. Artistic Director Christopher Glynn comments ‘I’m delighted that since the unfortunate cancellation of their concert last November because of the snow, Consortium have been able to find another date in their busy schedule to come and launch the 2011 festival. They are one of the
most exciting professional choirs to have emerged in recent years, with a string of awards to their name and I am delighted that we can launch our 30th anniversary festival in such style.’ Consortium is a professional chamber choir formed in 2006 by conductor Andrew-John Smith from the country’s finest consort and solo singers. They have swiftly gained an international reputation as one of the most exciting choral groups to have emerged in recent years and were quickly signed by top record label Hyperion. Consortium will perform a programme including popular favourites as Fauré’s Pavane and Brahms’ Gypsy Songs as well as folksong settings by English composers such as Vaughan Williams. They will be joined at
the piano by Artistic Director Christopher Glynn and the concert will also be the first event to take place under the exciting new chairmanship of Robin Andrews. Following on from the success of the 2010 festival, with record-breaking ticket sales and unprecedented acclaim in the national press, it is clear that the new Chairman has ambitious and exciting plans for the future. This concert will see the release of the full details of the 2011 Ryedale Festival which will feature many internationally-known performers as well as the exceptionally talented young and emerging artists with which the festival is strongly associated. Sky, Sea and Land An Exhibition of Landscape and Seascape Paintings by Hector Fraser, Malcolm Ludvigsen and Jim Wright
16th April to 14th May Hector Fraser
Hector is originally from Glasgow and started his career in the agricultural industry in Scotland before moving to Yorkshire for his work almost 50 years ago. He has enjoyed painting for 70 years and is still very active. His pleasure in painting is perhaps reflected in his work, which frequently depicts the Wolds, where he has lived for so long, and his native Scotland. He works mainly in pastels, oils and acrylics.
Malcolm Ludvigsen Malcolm has a special talent for capturing on canvas the wide skies and glorious cloudscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds and the sweeping beaches of the East Riding coast, especially around Bridlington and Filey. He believes that to capture the vibrancy and vitality of the scene it is essential to paint in the open air with his subject directly in front of him - and he does so, at all times of the year. He combines his skill as an oil painter with being a professor of mathematics and author of a book on relativity.
Jim Wright Jim is well known for his very atmospheric paintings of the North Yorkshire Moors, depicting the rumbustious weather so often encountered in that area. However, his more recent work brings the same evocative quality to the wild seas off the North Yorkshire coast and to the landscapes and seascapes of his native Scotland, particularly the north west. Living since 1998 at Kirbymoorside, close to the moors, he is well placed to see and absorb the powerful forces of nature which he seeks to portray.

amily life today is changing. There is not always the same support network available from within the family as there used to be. Home-start makes a difference to families through its home visiting service. A volunteer will visit the family who are finding things a struggle – for whatever reason – in their own home. Support given may be either practical or emotional. Volunteers may find themselves playing with the children, listening to the parent – this is usually, though not always, the mum – helping with a trip to the local park or shops, or anything else that makes life easier for the family. Families are usually referred by their Health Visitor, or other professionals who may be currently involved with the family. A family can also refer themselves. Home-Start Ryedale is looking to recruit new home-visiting volunteers to befriend and support families across Ryedale. All volunteers are required to undertake training and the next course is due to start during March. Jo Oliver, Home-Start Ryedale Coordinator stated; ‘I am delighted to be recruiting new volunteers for our Preparation Course starting in March. This will equip the volunteers with the relevant skills to offer support to families on their homes. Volunteers are vital to delivering this service so I would be very keen to hear from anyone who thinks this volunteering opportunity might be right for them. Volunteering is an enjoyable and rewarding way to make a real difference
in the local community. The feed-back from Home-Start volunteers across the UK is that it has helped them to forge new careers in the social sector and many volunteers say it not only helps the families they support gain confidence and selfesteem but it helps them too.’ Home-Start Ryedale is also keen to hear from anyone who may be interested in getting involved in the Charity in other ways. If anyone wants to offer assistance in other ways, please do get in touch. At the moment we would be particularly keen to hear from anyone who might be able to help us with fundraising or publicity. York Cats Protection is desperately seeking loving new homes for one lovely mature lady, Poppy. Poppy has been with us for some time now as when she first came to us she had a medical issue concerning her eye. After some initial basic treatment Poppy was re-homed almost as good as new and ready for a fresh start. Sadly Poppy’s eye drops proved too difficult for her new owner and she ended up back at the centre. On returning Poppy received extra treatment for her eye and underwent an operation. Happily all seems well with her eye and she shouldn’t require any further treatment at the present - so now it’s time for a new home! Poppy would like to be the only cat in the house and wouldn’t be suitable with dogs or young children. She would like someone who will keep her luscious fur in tiptop condition and give her the love and attention she deserves. She purrs like a train and loves curling up on knees and drifting off to sleep. Other long-stay ladies include Ellie, the naughty tortie who needs plenty of play-time and toys and our much publicised Freya who has been with us since 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A Complete Canine Service
T
he owner of Wolds Way Canine Ltd will take on dogs of any age, size, breed and background and, so long as the owner is on board, can usually make positive progress. The talented trainer of 20 years’ experience has transformed snappers into softies, helped new owners build a bond with traumatised rescue dogs and provides an exceptional level of essential everyday obedience training. From tiny Bichon-Frise to Great Danes and Huskies and the everpopular Labradors, Spaniels and crossbreeds, every kind of dog is welcome at Wolds Way Canine. Christine offers a wide selection of services including one-onone training sessions to group classes, residential training courses and clinics. There is also the popular fun and games class,
There is no such thing as a hopeless case when it comes to troubled dogs, as far as expert dog trainer Christine Stansfield is concerned. incorporating agility, heelwork to music, games and fun ideas to use on walks. Christine is committed to reward-based training rather than negative reinforcement. As well as being more humane, she finds it to be more effective. She said: “I’d much rather have a dog work for me because they trust me and respect me rather than being afraid of me and it also means the dog will be more obedient. A dog trained using punishment is more likely to be unpredictable and aggressive.” The guiding principles of Christine’s training methods are kindness, fairness and consistency leading to effectiveness. She said: “I want every dog owner to enjoy a good relationship with their dog. It is miserable if you have a dog who can’t walk on the lead, come when it’s called or even look at you when you say its name. But the good news is all of that can, in almost every case, be overcome.” Christine set up Wolds Way Canine ten years ago, with encouragement from her sister, who realised she had a knack for working with animals and gave her the push she needed. She was one of the first graduates of Bishop Burton College’s HNC in Canine Behaviour and Training in 2003, and is now studying for the advanced qualification. More recently, she added a grooming service and also
kennel space for 12 dogs at Wolds Way – providing a cosy ‘holiday for dogs’ where the ‘guests’ receive as much love and attention as they do at home and, where required, continuation of their training. Christine’s son James, 17, is always happy to throw a ball for guests and, where cuddles and comfort are needed, her daughter Rebecca, 19, steps in. To talk about your dog’s needs, contact Christine on 01944 738714, email cstansfield@ woldsway-cbt.co.uk or find out more at www.woldswaycbt.co.uk

HOP Hop is a real-life/animation mash-up by the people who brought you Depsicable Me. When Fred runs over the Easter Bunny, he decides he can’t do a hit and run and must take the bunny in and nurse him back to health. Little does he know the trouble he’s let himself in for as this is no ordinary bunny rabbit.
RIO When Blu, a domesticated macaw living in a cage somewhere deep in Minnesota meets Jewel it’s like a new lease of life. Deciding to go on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro, the first hurdle Blu needs to conquer is his fear of flying. Fun and frantic and in 3D.
RED RIDING HOOD Red Riding Hood is the latest update of a traditional story by the director of Twilight. In a medieval village Valerie and Peter plan to run away to escape an arranged marriage but as they are about to leave a werewolf attacks, killing Valerie’s sister. The villagers call in a werewolf hunter as the bodies pile up but he can offer little reassurance when he informs the village that the werewolf, a human by day, could be anyone.

Caring for backyard
Poultry
T
here is a wonderful variety of poultry out there to choose from which in turn produce eggs of different size and even colour. Indeed people become very attached to their birds, which is no surprise given our title of being a nation of animal lovers and we regularly see birds at the practice. If you are planning to keep hens for the first time do your research first, and talk to people who are experienced in keeping poultry to get advice. You can also visit www.poultryclub. org for all sorts of information from breeds to housing and www.birdwelfarestrategy.org. uk for your legal obligations when keeping birds (for good welfare). On a serious note, if there were an outbreak of avian influenza in the U.K., birds would have to be housed to keep them separate from wild birds, check www.defra.gov.uk for updates. A lot of the reasons we see chickens at the practice relates to the management of small flocks so I’ll summarise a few key points below:
Keeping chickens has certainly become very popular in recent years and with good reason, nothing can beat your own home produce, from the point of view of the welfare of the birds and the delicious taste of fresh eggs.
•
• Keep a medicines book to
Always provide plenty of fresh clean water
• Use good quality layer pellets from a reputable source: if birds have access to grass they will have enough green stuff otherwise this may need to be supplemented. Avoid giving kitchen scraps because of the risk of salmonella and giving the birds an unbalanced diet.
• Move houses with runs
frequently so the birds always have access to clean well drained grass. Gravel or wood chips (not bark chips) can be placed by entrances to static houses to keep feet clean. Birds enjoy some environmental enrichment in the form of trees or shrubs which also provide shade.
• Worm twice a year if truly
free range, more frequently if kept in a small area. Please call us for advice on wormers as products vary in efficacy! Manufacturers do now produce wormers in sizes appropriate for small flocks, to mix in feed and give over 7 days (adding a little vegetable oil to the pellets helps powders to stick).
record any medicines given to the birds, including worming, and be aware that there may be a withdrawal time during which its inadvisable to eat the eggs.
• Quarantine new birds before
introducing them to your flock in case they carry any diseases and be careful where you source your birds from.
• Signs of good health include dry nostrils, a clean vent and feathers and a healthy colour comb (the colour can vary according to breed).
• Use a good quality
disinfectant (ask us for recommendations) to clean housing and if using second hand housing disinfect thoroughly, including all the nooks and crannies – taking the house apart may be necessary.
• Prompt treatment of a bird
that appears to be unwell will maximise their chances of recovery and minimise the risks to other birds. Enjoy watching your birds and those wonderfully tasty eggs! Lucy Nowell, Station House Vets

Getting to know I.T. The Slate – will it succeed this time? by Nick Teasdale, www.tknowit.net others how to package the tablet idea.

f you haven’t already noticed, over the next few months you are likely to see all the PC manufacturers, and even non PC manufacturers, offering tablet form computers. Most people will have heard of the Apple iPad but there are, and will be, products launched that will run MS Windows, Android and various other operating systems. The Apple iPad, like the iPhone, is easy to use and good at what it does – and it’s shown the
Going beyond internet surfing and emailing then people start to ask for a system that runs MS Windows. Take the Netbook as an example – launched and championed by ASUS it was a low power, low cost but decent featured and long battery life device but it ran Linux. Today the vast majority of Netbooks are running MS Windows and the price has risen accordingly but demand is still there. With the tablet form, Microsoft has referred to models that run Windows as Slates. One model that has caught my interest is the ASUS EEE Slate EP121. It’s has no UK launch date or price yet but it offers the power of a laptop but the flexibility of a tablet
and you can also use a stylus interface to scribble rather than type notes. It has a 12.1” screen, windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit), a powerful Intel Core i5 processor, up to 4GB RAM and up to 64GB solid state drive (so no hard disk to damage), wireless, bluetooth, USB, HDMI, card reader and camera. As it runs windows then it also will support Flash. Some reviewers have suggested battery life is poor at 2 or 3 hours when challenged but then a laptop with the same performance would only last a similar time. Only time will tell but if it’s the right price and is as reliable as ASUS products tend to be then this model may take off.
