elcome to our April edition.

I probably say this every year, but I love April! Everywhere is fresh and new, lambs, swallows, leaves on the tress, sunshine and longer days all go towards making us feel better. Shake off the winter blues and go out and enjoy the spring! Of course this year there are many reasons to enjoy April – Easter, cycling galore and lots of local places and events to take part in and visit. The Tour de Yorkshire will once again be whizzing through our region. If you can, why not visit Norton and Malton on Friday 28th April where there are a whole host of activities planned to celebrate the occasion; wearing lycra is optional! More on page 6. A local group of volunteers have taken it upon themselves to get Malton ‘blooming’ this summer. With no lesser ambition than to win the Yorkshire in Bloom competition, see how you can wellie-up and dig in on page 10, the group would love to hear from you. From the Handy Mag office above the shops we’ll be well placed to see a floral bonanza! Ah spring! This month the we’ll be giving both advertisers and community events more profile through our Facebook page. As with our Twitter feed, please look us up, ‘like us’ and then be at the front row for updates of what’s happening in your area. Make sure that this spring you make time for yourself and family to have some local fun. Time races and waits for no one…. Well done to Kathleen Robinson of Pickering for winning our February competition. Have a great month!

Marianne

PS. Our next deadline is Tuesday 4th April for our May editions. If you have a local business or event you’d like us to help promote in this edition, please get in touch as soon as possible.

Beck Isle Museum Celebrates 50 years history items such as costume, household items ands a large photographic collection including images by local photographer Sydney Smith. Right from the start volunteers have played a key part in keeping the museum running from painting and decorating to welcoming visitors at the reception and helping out with events. There have been numerous events taking place over the years including fetes, open days, the popular Flower Festival as well as a celebration for the centenary of the Pickering Pageant in 2010.

I

t was in 1967 that a small group of volunteers, interested in local history, decided to form a museum and arts centre in Pickering. Starting out with just a few rooms containing wheelwright’s tools, costume and military uniforms, the museum has developed and expanded over the last 50 years. There are now thousands of items in the collection relating to the history of Pickering, the businesses, trades and the stories of those that lived here. Not long after opening, volunteers clearing out the outbuildings made a few surprising discoveries including four bottles of Crofts Port Wine and a skeleton (used for medical studies as the building was previously a doctors surgery). A short time later after hearing strange noises, museum volunteers were surprised to find a horse tethered in the outbuildings. This part of the building has now been developed into display areas. The museum has seen a whole range of items come into the collection including a funeral bier, telephone box, a Chemist’s drugs run, barbers chair and printing press. There are also many social

To celebrate the museum’s 50th anniversary there will be a temporary exhibition celebrating the history of the museum and its wide ranging collection, and a special event taking place on 27 May. For up to date information about events and for more information about visiting, take a look at the new Beck Isle Museum website www.beckislemuseum.org.uk

Blooming Malton Can you help give Malton a flourish this spring?

Y

ou might have been thinking that the centre of Malton is looking smarter but it’s about to get an extra boost! For the first time in 2017, the town will enter the ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ competition. Over 1600 communities around the UK enter their regional ‘In Bloom’ competition each year with the aim of transforming their cities, towns and villages. This year Malton will be entered into a new ‘Community Assessment’ category and the team are aiming to get as much of the community involved as possible. Cllr Christopher Turner, a member of the team, says, “We’re keen to get as many people involved as possible whether you are a resident, work or own a business in town. It is all about taking pride in our town and encouraging community spirit. “Of course, floral displays play an important part in the contest but our participation in ‘Malton in Bloom’ will be assessed on how all sectors of the local community are managing the local environment within three categories; horticultural excellence, environmental responsibility and community participation.” The RHS encourages all communities to get involved to help create safer, cleaner and greener local environments and the awards are based on the RHS’s medal standards of Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver and Bronze. Judges will assess Malton in Bloom sometime in July with an awards ceremony in September at which the awards are announced. Five of the best are then chosen to represent Yorkshire in the RHS national finals the following year. “We need all the encouragement, constructive criticism and better still, all the help you can give us!” says Christopher. “We already have help from

“We’re very happy to support this initiative to bring more colour to Malton” Duncan Smith, Lowfield Garage Malton & Norton Tidy Up Group, Derwent Diggers, the WI and Flower Club but there is room for many more.” So, there are three months to bring the Malton community together to make the town sparkle. Can you help the group with gardening or litter picking, identifying areas needing work, keeping property tidy or photography? Do you have a town centre business? Could you have a hanging basket or do you need some help with your floral display? If you can’t give practical help, there is a Just Giving page for donations. The group is aiming to raise £1500 this year to help with planting. To get involved, email Christopher Turner at pottingshed@maltoninbloom.co.uk or call him on 07900 227000. Have a look at the website (www.maltoninbloom.co.uk) for more information and follow Malton in Bloom on Facebook and Twitter.

Let's show the Yorkshire in Bloom judges what the Malton community can do this year!

and the YAA have now also taken delivery of a second H145 Airbus that is based at Topcliffe in Thirsk. The exploits of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were seen recently on the television programme ‘Helicopter Hero’s’, shown on the ‘Really Channel’.

M

alton & Norton Lions recently hosted a ‘Thank You’ event at the Ham & Cheese Country Inn at Scagglethorpe for helpers involved with the Annual Santa Sleigh. It was a splendid evening and the Lions were very pleased to be able to show their appreciation. Some volunteers said they had shed ½ stone following the sleigh around door to door - very useful in the lead up to Christmas! Some of the £16,000 raised went towards helping the Yorkshire Air Ambulance purchase their new ‘Chopper’, the Airbus H145. This state of the art helicopter is based at Nostel Priory near Wakefield,

Nick Simpson, from Malton & Norton Lions, says “There have been a number of rescues from our area. Our donations to the YAA are only made possible through generous donations from local members of the public”. Leon the Lion was also keen to assist, and even took his own L plates, but it seems that the Yorkshire Air Ambulance currently don’t have any vacancies for pilots at the moment - especially if they are Lions! Well done Malton & Norton Lions. For further details regarding Malton & Norton Lions https://twitter.com/MaltonLionsClub www.maltonnortonlions.co.uk/

Scampston Enchanted Families will be flying to Scampston for the magical launch of their new fairy trail, when doors open on Good Friday, 14th April. "Creating a fairy world has been a truly magical task and we really hope it will enchant children and parents alike on their search for our resident fairies!"

T

o celebrate the launch of the new fairy forest and the arrival of Scamp the Mole’s new fairy friends, there will be an array of enchanting activities for children on the 14th April, from 11am – 3pm. These will include storytelling walks, fairy-themed crafts and fairy cakes available in the Garden Café. The woodland play area will be transformed into an enchanting fairy land. Families will be invited to explore the woodland in the hunt for fairies. New to discover this year, children can tie their greatest wishes to our Wishing Tree! Scampston’s Fairy Godmothers will lead two storytelling walks at 11am and 2pm, escorting families on a magical adventure into the fairy kingdom. Children will also have the opportunity to create their own wands in the Conservatory – along with other crafts from 11am – 3pm.

All children wearing costume (anything a little magical!) will gain free entry for the day. There will also be a limited number of costumes which can be borrowed from the Ticket Office. Isobel Pritchard, Visitor Services Manager, commented: “We are so excited to introduce something fresh for young families this spring. Creating a fairy world has been a truly magical task and we really hope it will enchant children and parents alike on their search for our resident fairies!” All children taking part in the activities must be accompanied by an adult.

Chris Legard, owner of Scampston Hall, commented: “We love the incredible buzz at our Community Weekends – it’s great to see so many people enjoying what lies on their doorstep! “We’ve made lots of improvements over the holidays which we hope that our regular visitors will notice and

approve of. There are new options available in the Café and some great new additions to the shop, as well as a little magic in the air for children.” “This year the Community Weekend will take place on the final weekend of the Easter holidays, so we hope it will help to end the break with a bit of a bang!” Proof of address, such as a utility bill, will be required for free entry. Helmsley Library Can you help keep it open?

From April 2017 the responsibility for the day to day running of Helmsley Library will lie with the Helmsley Community Library Group volunteers. In order for this group to maintain the hours that the library is currently open, we need to recruit more volunteers. We will need to cover 7 two/three hour sessions per week. In the past few years libraries have adjusted to the changing needs of the community, and as well as the loan of books our library now offers access to computers, Wi-Fi and the internet, a place to research and photocopy, and somewhere to get help and advice. Being a volunteer for our library will therefore encompass many different skills and roles. As well as helping library users you will be able to make a difference in the community, make new friends and

meet people. If you enjoy meeting and greeting people, shelving or selecting books, or even in keeping our library attractive we need your help. Should your skills lie in marketing, publicity, organising events or fund raising we would especially like to hear from you. Our volunteers won’t work on their own as there will always be at least two volunteers undertaking the sessions. In order to gain relevant experience we also offer training. If you are interested in finding out about the work involved in being a volunteer at Helmsley Community Library, please email Helmsley. library@gmail.com and we will send you more information. Alternatively, please telephone 01609 534555, or pop into the library. Any help you can offer will be appreciated. If you are unable to help us at this time, but know of someone you think might be interested, we would be very grateful if you could mention this article to them.

A Day in the Life of a Ryedale Community Transport Volunteer Driver in the Falklands? That was an amazing feat. But I’ll bet you didn’t know that until the end of their service in 1992 the V-bombers were still using pretty much the same radar used in the Lancaster bombers of 1943?” “And they went all the way to the Falklands on it? Wow!” Truly an amazing feat.

I

t’s a bright, clear winter morning as I set out to collect Geoff from Ampleforth for an appointment at Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. He’s waiting at his door as I arrive and tells me he is going for a quick check-up after a recent operation. I remark that this is my first trip to Friarage though I seem to have been to almost every other corner of North Yorkshire since I became a volunteer driver. “Do you enjoy driving for RCT?”, Geoff asks. “Definitely”, I say. “I enjoy driving round here and I meet some great people.” “I couldn’t have done without the RCT car service this last few weeks while I’ve been unable to drive,” replies Geoff. We head past Byland Abbey looking peaceful in the early morning sun and on towards Coxwold. Geoff tells me he was in the RAF for many years and travelled all over the world during his service. I tell him that one of the jobs I did in my later career was connected with converting the old RAF officers’ mess at Finningley into a home for a school. “Ah, Finningley,” Geoff murmurs. “One of the bases of the famous V-bombers. Brave lads that crewed those. Ready to go at a moment’s notice on a one-way ticket to nowhere. I expect you know that one of the last Vulcans did that famous trip to bomb the runway at Port Stanley

On through Coxwold and towards Thirsk where the traffic thickens a little as people head into town or up towards the A19. I quietly reflect on how interesting it is and a great privilege to hear people’s stories and recollections while driving them to important appointments. And all the time enjoying the beautiful Ryedale and North Yorkshire countryside! We arrive at Friarage and walk down to reception. We agree to meet there in about an hour, giving me time for a brisk walk round a bustling Northallerton and a cup of coffee. When I get back to the hospital, Geoff emerges after a few minutes with a broad grin on his face. “All mending nicely”, he says. “Just physio and GP appointments now.” As we re-trace our route back home, the conversation inevitably turns to more recent events: Brexit, The US Presidential Election and the NHS. “It’s a funny old world,” we conclude as we arrive at Geoff’s door. Geoff signs my paperwork and we say our goodbyes. He remarks that it’s an odd thing to say about a trip to hospital but that he’s enjoyed the journey this morning. I agree wholeheartedly and reflect again that working as a volunteer driver with RCT is really enjoyable. Roger Gibbeson, a volunteer car driver for Ryedale Community Transport, was driving Geoff Allen to Friarage Hospital. To contact Ryedale Community Transport about becoming a volunteer driver or about the services available, telephone 01653 699059 or see our website at www.ryedalect.org. Or Follow us on Facebook.

A bridge at Malton Station Kirkbymoorside Environment Group

option for non-car users. A bridge would give access by foot and by bicycle from Ryedale and East Yorkshire to rail and bus services. It would give a safer and more pleasant route by foot and by bicycle, to employment, shops and services for Malton/Norton residents. It would require a lift or a ramp for disability access, suitable for bicycles, and would need to be independent of ticket barriers. Network Rail and train operators will probably require a 2nd platform for more trains. It is hoped that they and the Government Local Enterprise Partnership will pay for the bridge to mitigate for the increased delays at the level crossing and to enhance the whole travel network Ryedale District Council are looking to improve rail/bus interchange facilities and to add parking. The bridge fits well with these ideas too. A safe access on both sides of the bridge should link to onward routes for cyclists and pedestrians. Encouraging people to use the train instead of a car reduces pollution in Ryedale and beyond.

T

wo big opportunities for developing cycling and walking in 2017 are the proposed pedestrian/cycle bridge at the railway station, and the proposed Malton to Pickering Cycle Route. Both help to meet needs for physical and mental health, for reducing traffic congestion and pollution, for tourism and other businesses, for routes to work, for leisure, for travel safety and for quality of life. You can help by writing to, phoning or emailing your two Ryedale Ward Councillors and your County Councillor, and your MP, to say that you support these ideas. Online go to www.ryedale.gov.uk, enter your town or village name then “ward into the search box at the top of the page. With a doubling of train services due from the end of 2017, and longer trains, a new bridge would benefit pedestrians and cyclists who arrive or depart Malton/Norton by train. Nunnington Hall opens its doors to Ryedale residents on April 1st for free!

T

he National Trust hopes its visitors will be sitting comfortably during their visit on Saturday 1st April to Nunnington Hall, for a special day of events with a historical theme. The literary events are organised as part of Ryedale Book Festival’s 2017 programme and they are designed to appeal to anyone who enjoys books, reading and history. There will be the chance to hear bestselling writer of historical fiction, Sophia Tobin, discussing her latest novel, The Vanishing and her “day-job” in the library of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in London. There will an opportunity to join in with a book binding workshop run by York Bookbinding (advance booking needed). Less crafty types can sit back and be entertained by the Dickens Society’s performance

of an original radio style drama ‘Murder on Miss Havisham’s Tour’ written by Brian Oxberry. Two local writers and their York-based publisher, Stairwell Books, will be talking about publishing memoirs of their ancestors and there are plenty of activities to entertain young readers including a book trail around the house, and the chance to make up their own adventure story by playing a game with some Giant Storytelling Dice! Children will enjoy taking part in an interactive storytelling session with the talented illustrator and writer Leigh Hodgkinson. The events will be taking place from 10:30am until 4pm and admission is free for visitors who live in Ryedale upon proof of address. Standard admission charges apply to non-Ryedale residents but the book events are free. For more information about the literary events please visit the Ryedale Book Festival website. www.ryedalebookfestival.com

Interiors Trends for Spring 2017 by Sarah Clark owner at Interiors at Nine to Eleven

S

pring is the time when many of us will give our homes a makeover. So we thought it would be good to have a look at some of the top interiors trends of the moment. Whilst 2016 was all about metallics such as copper, and unusual colours like rose quartz and serenity blue, it seems that 2017 will take an earthier turn. Terracotta looks to be big news in 2017, and its rich oranges and browns offer a pleasing sense of ruggedness to any interior. Whether it’s incorporated in a bowl or a lamp, terracotta is something that we’re going to be seeing a lot more of this year. 2017 will also introduce plenty of ‘ethnic’ designs into our ceramics and soft furnishings. With a freewheeling use of colour and some funky patterns, it will give our homes a breath of fresh air!

us all the chance to soften up our interiors. Some of the lovely curtains from Sanderson’s Waterperry collection illustrate this perfectly by using delicate shades and floral themes to welcome the light of spring into your home. And finally, whilst we’re waiting for the warmer months to arrive, it’s reassuring to find that classic fabrics like velvet and wool will maintain their popularity throughout 2017.

Marble is another traditional texture that is making it big this Spring. Although white marble-topped tables are a design classic, this luxurious stone is being reimagined in surprising new colours, patterns and shapes for 2017. There will also be plenty of floral designs that give

Whether it’s a wool tartan sofa, or even a floralthemed garden hamper, you can find all you need to stay on-trend at Interiors at Nine to Eleven!

Is your conservatory the perfect place to be this Spring?

W

ith the days getting longer and the sun making an appearance now is the time to be enjoying your conservatory! But many of you are probably saying it’s too cold or full of condensation. Now is the perfect time to fit a Wetheralds insulated roof to your conservatory – fitted within a week you will be able to enjoy this spring and every other season with a comfortable room every day of the year. The main reasons why our customers look to convert their conservatory to a solid tiled roof are: • Too cold in winter and too hot in summer, • The roof is coming to the end of its life, • The conservatory just isn’t an enjoyable room to be in! Based just outside York (but installing nationwide), we handle everything from start to finish; building your roof on site to structural engineers’ specifications and arranging visits from your local council to comply with building regulations. We make sure the skip arrives on time and our own teams of experienced fitters always tidy up before they leave! Why customers across Yorkshire choose Wetheralds: • The quality of the materials used and our professional partnerships ensure you have a wonderful new extension to your home. • All our fitters are employed by Wetheralds and have many years of experience fitting new roofs – so you will benefit from a high quality build. • Our competitive pricing and excellent customer service ensure you get the room you want, with the peace of mind that Wetheralds consistently deliver a new roof to solve all your existing problems.

“I had several quotes for a new roof and was impressed by what Wetheralds offered including a building regulations certificate, which no other company had mentioned. The communication from Wetheralds both before and after completion was flawless. It has made a big difference to the temperature in the conservatory which was icy cold to use in winter. The council surveyor was also impressed by the speed and quality of their work, which wasn’t compromised in any way I am so pleased I had the roof done and chose Wetheralds as my contractors.” Sharon Hall, December 2016 If you would like to turn your conservatory into a new Garden Room this Spring get in touch with Wetheralds now for a free quote – call 0800 612 3771 or visit Wetheraldsroofsystems.co.uk for more customer reviews and information.

Fersina Windows A bespoke service for every customer

A

fter more than 30 years in business you might think that Alan and Carol Walker at Fersina Windows in Malton would want to take it easy, but they are as passionate as ever about serving their customers and the local area. “In the last 5 years we’ve raised our own expectations for customer satisfaction and we’ve significantly improved our skill level,” Alan says. That, alongside employing a friendly local team and further access to specialists from all fields, means that Fersina are really on top of their game. The word at Fersina is ‘bespoke’ and they can provide everything from complex frames to conservatory upgrades and high quality composite doors to automatic garage doors, all to fit with your particular home and budget. Alan explains, “As we go to great lengths to match the style of property with all of our installations, we have consistently been getting building regulations passed for Article 4 Conservation Areas within the North York Moors area. Mechanical jointing and colour matching means that our UPVC windows fit perfectly in any property whether it is traditional or contemporary. In order to ensure all products are perfect we also have access to a graphite welder which gives an almost invisible weld.” Do you have an under used conservatory? Fersina can help you regain the space as an all year round room with an upgrade. Alan says, “The type of upgrade is dependent on the particular house but can mean that heat loss drops by more than 15% of what we could achieve with high performance glass alone. There is one proviso and that is that the conservatory must be up to standard to be able to withstand the new roof but

"We go to great lengths to match the style of property with all of our installations" we have a meter to determine whether this is the case.” Fersina will even deal with all of the building regulations and requirements needed for when the house is sold at a later date. And from the elegant to the ‘everyday’, Fersina’s outstanding portfolio of products also includes standard or automatic garage doors, a great idea if you find lifting heavy items difficult. If security is top of your list, then why not consider a Rockdoor, the strongest spec door on the market today. From reglazing to a complete conservatories and roofline, Fersina Windows is perfectly placed to help with any of your requirements. Why not drop into the Fersina Showroom in Horsemarket Road in Malton for a chat with Alan and the team or call 01653 693590. fersinanorthyorks@yahoo.co.uk www.fersina.co.uk

Malton Goes to War

alton Museum reopens its doors on Saturday 15th April with a fascinating new section ‘Malton Goes to War’ as part of the ‘Malton Goes to Market’ exhibition, made possible thanks to National Lottery players. Members of Malton Rotary Club have been researching the stories of those named on the war memorial in Yorkersgate who fell during the Great War. A number of these stories have been selected to highlight the contribution made by our local men. Surprisingly for the time, a woman is named on our Memorial. She is Sarah Hornsey, whose parents ran a draper’s shop at 40 Market Place currently occupied by an optician. Sarah was in her early 30’s when she volunteered. One of the men to be featured is Harold Postill, who was one of eleven men who volunteered from the Snows store, which at the time stood on the corner of Castlegate and Yorkersgate.

Also on display will be some items more familiar to a British ‘Tommy’. These include souvenir handmade letter openers made by soldiers from any readily available materials in the trenches i.e. spelt bullet cases, a selection of rich colourful embroidered postcards made by local French women, to sell to soldiers which would then be sent home from France and Belgium, and a selection of personal items a soldier would carry in his kit bag. This new element of the Malton Goes to Market exhibition opens Saturday 15th April until Saturday 28th October, Thursday - Saturday 10am - 4pm, entry is free. This project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

OTHER WORLDLY Lions birthday WONDERS By Mary Mahon

E

arth; the only known planet inhabited with life, our only home? Maybe not for much longer. Scientists have now detected well over 3000 planets outside our own solar system and NASA’s recent discovery of seven new, earth-like planets could potentially harbour galactic life! From cavedwellers with pointed sticks to intergalactic explorers, we’ve made vast leaps in scientific discoveries. Inventions such as the Hubble Space telescope, space shuttles and satellites allow us to explore beyond our own realm to otherworldly interstellar wonders! And the discoveries we have made are phenomenal…. On Earth, when it rains we get drenched in water. It’s cold and wet, yet at least it doesn’t bruise us. On Saturn and Jupiter, atmospheric data indicates that diamonds rain from the sky like crystal hailstones in a utopian paradise! According to scientists, it is the most likely form of precipitation in our solar system. Similarly, some comets have been spotted with ‘cryovolcaneos’ on their surface that on eruption stream torrents of ice rather than lava! Meteorite dust is easily obtainable, yet stardust from a Neutron star would be far more fascinating. The once-exploded supernovas collapse and compress, and so in result become so extraordinarily dense that one teaspoon of a Neutron star on Earth would weigh a billion tonnes! When a day feels like it’s dragging on at school or work, be thankful you’re not on Venus. One year on Venus lasts 225 Earth days, yet one day lasts a lengthy 243 Earth days, making one day on Venus longer than a year! Luckily, we don’t have to suffer through Mondays on Venus… When you begin to look past our own planet, life is put into perspective. Gazing up to the skies above us rather than at the dirt below our feet truly reveals the triviality of money and power, border controls and raging wars. In the words of Carl Sagan, “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark… there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us”, so all we can do is embrace and enjoy our fleeting time here.

surprise for Saint Catherine's A coffee morning to celebrate the Ryedale Lions’ 50th birthday has brought a £300 gift for Saint Catherine’s. The money raised from the event at the RVS Centre in Pickering was presented to Saint Catherine’s area fundraiser Nicky Grunwell by the Lions coffee morning organisers. “We are extremely thankful for the fantastic support of the Ryedale Lions. The money raised will help Saint Catherine’s continue to offer their services to patients across Ryedale, Scarborough, Whitby and the East Coast,’’ said Nicky. “This is the first of many donations the Lions club will be making during our 50th year in Ryedale to help deserving organisations and individuals around our area,” said Ryedale Lions president David Warin. “Last year we raised more than £20,000 for the benefit of the local community and we hope to do even better this year to mark our golden anniversary,” he said.

Fabulous Fabrics at Fabulous Prices

P

From Wath Court Fabrics

aula Battersby is the friendly and knowledgeable face behind Wath Court Fabrics, an Aladdins cave of curtain fabrics, upholstery fabrics and curtain accessories based in Hovingham. She has been sewing since the age of 12 and, with a passion for fabrics, set up Wath Court Fabrics in 2011.

Wath Court Fabrics sells high quality curtaining in many designs from traditional chintz to more contemporary styling. There is something for everyone and with all fabrics on the roll, rather than smaller samples, it is easy to see exactly how the pattern works and they are available to take home straight away. “The decision about which colour and style of fabric to choose is always a challenging one,” says Paula. “We can provide samples of any of our fabrics for customers to take away and try in their particular situation. Fabrics always look different under different lighting so it’s important to try them out.”

hooks and roman blind components. Paula often can’t resist dressmaking fabrics so you may find the odd fine cotton lawn, lighter weight worsteds or woollens sneaking into the shop as well. There is always good advise on hand to help you work out how much fabric you’ll need taking into account pattern repeats. Paula not only deals with homes but has helped with furnishings for commercial properties such as hotels. You can find Wath Court Fold in a beautiful valley between the villages of Hovingham and Slingsby. Drop in and have a chat to Paula about your soft furnishing requirements.

“Our fabrics are sourced from major furnishing fabric manufacturers and top design houses and many are unique in the area. They may be from excess production, end of lines or just clearance at the end of the season. They are definitely not purchased as seconds.”

1000’s metres of curtain and upholstery fabrics at very affordable prices

The main benefit of browsing the Wath Court stock is that prices are very affordable (starting from £4) and usually much less than standard retail. To complement the fabrics there is everything you need to make your soft furnishings perfect from good quality linings, interlining, poles, tapes, tracks,

Pop in and have a browse through the many rolls held in stock and take home a few samples.

Motoring New Audi Q5

for active lane assist, pre-sense assistance which helps detect if a crash is imminent and can apply the brakes for you, and cross-traffic assistance at the rear that will help when pulling out of parking spaces. In slow moving traffic it’s even partly autonomous, slowing down and speeding up in jams while keeping you in your lane.

R

eplacing ultra-successful cars is never easy for a manufacturer, but that’s the challenge Audi has faced with the Q5, the brand’s best-selling SUV. Built at the manufacturer’s most advanced ‘smart factory’ in Mexico, the refreshed off-roader is packed with clever technology, features revised engines and a fresh look that the maker hopes will continue to win over buyers. But has it done enough? LOOKS AND IMAGE The new Q5 may be a little less flashy than its Jaguar F-Pace rival, but that smart new octagonal nose, dramatic headlights and sharp body creases give it fantastic presence on the road. That’s helped by a wonderfully squat stance and perfect proportions. Inside the quality is clear. Solid, good quality materials are everywhere and the leather seats are comfortable and perfectly adjustable. There is plenty of space around the driver and logically placed controls for the multimedia system. There’s also a three-zone climate control system, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the optional virtual cockpit, which replaces the dials with a 12.3-inch high resolution display. SPACE AND PRACTICALITY The new Q5 is bigger and wider than its predecessor – but still 90kg lighter. Inside there’s more headroom and rear knee-room, while boot space is up 10 litres. Two adults will sit comfortably in the back, but a large transmission tunnel seriously eats into rear legroom in the middle seat. Safety systems are plentiful and buyers can opt

WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET? There are three engine options to pick from – but the best seller, and our pick of the bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm, 2.0-litre TDI, which will account for 60 per cent of sales in the UK. This comes as standard with a clever new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system that can switch seamlessly between two and fourwheel drive automatically. Fuel economy is 56.5mpg with emissions of 132g/km, and it hits 60mph in 7.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 135mph. A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol option with 250bhp is also available. It’s capable of returning 40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes the line-up, producing 284bhp and a stonking 620Nm of torque. BEHIND THE WHEEL The new Q5 is quite simply brilliant to drive. We tested the car on a variety of terrain, from motorways to cities and beaches to dirt tracks; it took them all in its stride. On the road it’s quiet, refined and accomplished, while in the grit it was surefooted and secure. The revised 2.0-litre diesel engine is punchy and works brilliantly when combined with the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox - overall it’s by far and away the best choice of transmission. VERDICT Audi has moved the game on with its new Q5 but not ruined a recipe that has won it so many admirers. Stylish, comfortable and great to drive, it’s now packed with even more clever technology and features. With best in class performance and economy, and some highly tempting optional extras, we’d be very surprised if any of its rivals managed to usurp it at the top of the sales charts any time soon. Short Story

The Last of the Wild Chickens

Vinny burst through the door of the community centre. “You’ll never guess what’s on top of the bike shed!” At the mention of the bike shed Eunice’s heart skipped a beat; had Vinny discovered her guilty secret? She’d been stacking chairs, assuming that all the members of her ‘Trimmer You!’ slimming club had departed. It had been a tough session. She’d had to be particularly strict with the group about avoiding the temptation of chocolate over the Bank Holiday weekend. There had been tears. Now Vinny was back, his ‘Trimmer of the Week’ rosette flapping in the breeze. “An actual chicken!” he continued breathlessly. “Sat there bold as brass.” Eunice stared at him, her mind racing. A chicken was not what she was expecting. “Don’t be daft,” she reasoned. “There’s no way a chicken could get up there - they can’t fly.” “Try telling that to this one,” Vinny laughed. “It’s probably just a pigeon,” Eunice said firmly, hoping this would be enough to make Vinny finally go home. “I’m no Bill Oddie, but I think I know the difference,” he said. “Come and have a look if you don’t believe me.” Very reluctantly Eunice pulled on her anorak and followed Vinny to the bike shed. A fat brown bantam sat clucking on the flat roof admiring the view. “I wonder where it’s come from,” Eunice said, her eyes searching the rest of the roof. “Someone round here must keep chickens.”

“Perhaps it’s been living wild,” Vinny said. “A chicken wouldn’t last five minutes in the wild.” “Well they had to live in the wild originally,” Vinny answered. “This might be the last of the wild chickens.” “We’ll have to get it down,” Eunice said irritably, reminded, more than ever, how annoying Vinny could be. “We can’t lock up and leave it there. Can you reach up and grab it?” “I’m not sure.” Vinny looked worried. “I’ve never held a bird before.” Eunice did not find this at all surprising. The bird ruffled her wings and stared at them indignantly. “Just grab her firmly around her sides,” Eunice said. “I’ll go and phone the caretaker to see if he knows who she belongs to.” Eunice went back into the community hall and paced up and down. She needed time to think. Within moments Vinny popped his head around the door. “Mystery solved!” he said cheerfully. “This lady walked into the car park and asked if I’d seen her chicken.” “Who was it?” Eunice hoped her ordeal was finally over. “Someone from the village,” Vinny said. “She said chickens can fly, they’re just not very good at it. Apparently this one’s always trying to escape.” “So it wasn’t a wild chicken then?” Eunice smirked. “No, but I think it was a magic one. Look...” From behind his back Vinny produced a large Easter egg wrapped in pink foil. “It had rolled down the side of the shed. That chicken must have laid it.” Eunice stared first at Vinny in disbelief, and then at the incriminating confectionary. She had one last trick up her sleeve. “A chocolate egg laying chicken!” she gasped. “I’ve heard of them but I’ve never seen one in real life.” She held out her hand for the egg. “I’d better take care of that.” “What are you going to do with it?” Vinny whispered as though afraid to wake it. “Do you think it will hatch?” “Maybe,” Eunice said, “particularly if I take it home and put it somewhere nice and warm.” Which, in a roundabout way, had been Eunice’s plan for that egg all along. Malton & Norton Rotary Club serving the local community Nationally, Rotary acts rapidly at times of disasters. Clubs in the region were active in providing help last winter to areas such as York and Tadcaster hit by the severe floods across the Yorkshire Region, stepping in with supplies and funds to help those affected.

T

he Club is part of a worldwide association of men and women which seeks to serve the local and national communities in the fullest sense. Founded in 1905, it has 1.5 million members in 200 countries. It is non political and non sectarian and open equally to men and women.

Internationally, Rotary’s biggest achievement has been to lead in the virtual eradication of polio world wide – last year there only 27 cases in three countries in the world. Rotarians have raised and provided $1.5 billion towards this goal, now helped by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which triples all money raised by Rotary. In addition Rotary has stocks of key items to go into disaster areas such as ShelterBoxes and AquaBoxes, which are delivered rapidly once access is possible to the affected area. The Malton and Norton Club donated £1000 to help the Rotary national appeal for Haiti in the wake of “Hurricane Michael” for the purchase of water Lifestraws.

The Rotary Club of Malton and Norton was founded in 1946 and consists of a mixture of men and women from a variety of backgrounds who come together to serve the community locally and worldwide. It is backed up by a group of Friends of Rotary.

Recently joined member Margaret Pepper said “I was the first woman member of the Malton and Norton Rotary Club and have been made most welcome by the existing members. The best things about being a member are meeting other like minded men and women and making a positive contribution to the community” Locally they raise substantial sums of money from activities such as the “posh” charity shop, the new 10km run, a bag pack at Morrison’s, a golf tournament etc. This money is then used to help community activities such as the local food bank, local youth groups, planting of spring bulbs in public areas and helping to fund the proposed new “Welcome to Malton” signs. They have also played a major role in the Malton War Memorial Refurbishment project.

If you would like to know more, please Google the Malton and Norton Rotary website or email mandnrotarysec@gmail.com and arrange to go along to one of their meetings. There will be a warm welcome and the first meeting is free! Meetings take place on the first, and fourth Mondays of each month at 6pm for a 6.30pm meal and usually a speaker. The second Monday each month is a brief business meeting.

How to enjoy your Easter Eggs ...and not increase your risk of cavities

Y

ou might be wondering how you can eat chocolate and not increase your risk of cavities. Whilst we cannot guarantee your waistline won’t suffer, we can show you how you can enjoy the odd treat and not increase your risk of decay.

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

Firstly, don’t eat chocolate straight from the fridge it can get very hard and break or chip your teeth and fillings. If you break the side off a tooth it can mean a crown which can be very expensive, so let your chocolate reach room temperature before you eat it. Secondly your rate of decay is related to how often you eat or drink, not how much. This means that if you want some of your chocolate egg, have it straight after a meal then you won’t cause any additional damage to your teeth. If you wait for half an hour and then have even a small piece it will extend your period of attack on your teeth by the same period. If you wait 2 hours it will cause a further attack of at least 90 minutes. Contrary to popular belief brushing after eating can be quite damaging to your teeth as the enamel is weakened by the acid attack. It won’t stop tooth decay either because it is impossible to clean every single surface of the tooth enough to stop the process. So try to keep sweet food and drinks to mealtimes and give yourself something to smile about. For an appointment to discuss your specific needs please call Jan at Howardian Dental.

More than just a piece of cake more fully seemingly ordinary things such as the flavour of an apple or a walk in the countryside. In addition, becoming more aware of our sensations from one moment to the next in a gentle nonjudgemental way can help us to tolerate times of great hardship.

D

uring October I spent a week on holiday in the Lake District. If you were to ask me what my holiday was like I would probably tell you that the cottage was great, the scenery was lovely and definitely what the weather was like! But this is not the full story of my holiday. I have ignored what I experienced on an emotional level. How being with my family made me feel, the sensations I experienced when watching a glorious sunset over Derwent Water or the sense of release I felt at staying in a village that was a mobile signal dead spot! This tendency to ignore our emotional experiences is not uncommon. I recall asking someone to describe what he experienced during the previous day. He told me that he went to a meeting in the morning where he had a very nice piece of cake. He then went shopping, did some gardening in the afternoon and spent the evening watching television. His tone indicated that he remembered his day as being boring and uninteresting. But, when I asked him what was so nice about the cake he instantly smiled, sat up straight and described how he felt welcomed by the people there he also recalled experiencing a true sense of belonging and left with a strong feeling of well being and contentment. The cake was not mentioned. Just like my holiday description he had initially reduced his day into general statements with no sense or awareness of the emotional impact he had actually experienced. It was only when he focused on a particular event that he was able to recognise the emotions he experienced. By paying close attention to what we are experiencing in any given moment it is possible for us to become intentionally aware of our emotional responses. This awareness can help us to enjoy

For example, by allowing ourselves to experience the sensations of anxiety that can lead to panic, we can identify the thoughts associated with the anxiety. This increased awareness of our emotional responses can provide us with the opportunity to develop a way of coping that creates a different outcome. With support, I believe that it is possible for us to develop a freedom to explore what we are experiencing in a more open, curious and healing way which will bring about change, a change that means our emotional experiences of everyday life can truly be described as more than just a piece of cake! by Jeff Bentley of TLC Counselling

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Making the Most of What You've Got! By Captain Matthew Bennett, The Salvation Army, Malton Corps

T

here once was a man, a wealthy man, a man with cash to spare, who was leaving his own property, so needed someone there. He entrusted to his servants some money to invest. Then, with a hug, he left them to carry out his quest. The first man was a clever man. He knew what he would do. He’d invest his money wisely, and work hard at it too!

But the third, oh the third! What a lazy man was he! He spent his days sat drinking cups of tea. No investing, no prospecting, just lazing in the sun. He buried all the money and thought his job was done. There was a man, a wealthy man, a man who’s just come back to see who needs a pay rise and who will get the sack! Now if you were the one to choose, how would you decide? Which servant should be confident and which one had better hide! When we are given such a lot from our loving Master’s hand, he calls us to use it wisely and follow his command. Love your neighbour as yourself – let’s try and do our part. We cannot change the world today, but we can make a start! Jesus told this kind of upside down story that if we give away what we have, God will give back to us in full measure, a generous helping, poured back into our giving hands. The way to keep what we have, is to give it away! How strange is that!

MERLIN TRADING UK LIMITED

The second was an honest chap; he too doubled his stake. Working hard and diligently, he toiled for the Master’s sake.

We meet, usually on the first Monday of each month, except January and August. The programme of indoor meetings in spring and autumn is always varied. Gardening Flower Power

perennial poppies, delphiniums, gaillardia, hollyhocks, rudbeckia and salvia. Pay a visit to your local garden centre or use a seed catalogue and start planning; you could save a fortune, and all from a packet or two of seed.

Blooming Hollyhock Flower

Y

ou can inexpensively and easily grow a huge range of flowers from seed at home. Just about every perennial flower is available to grow from seed, and once they have reached flowering size they’ll just keep on performing! There are lots to choose from, including lupins, silene, Echinaceae, geranium,

To start, you need containers to sow the seed into – I like to use half-sized seed trays, RootTrainers or smaller individual cells – and some good quality compost and your chosen seeds. It helps if you have something to tamp down the compost too, plus labels, a permanent marker, a dibber and some vermiculite (for covering seeds that need some light to germinate well). Sieve compost through a compost sieve to remove the larger lumps, leaving fine compost perfect for seed sowing. If you sieve it straight into the pots, cells or trays, make sure you collect up any that falls on the surface below.

Once the compost is in the tray or pot, firm it down so that there are no large gaps beneath the surface, and level it off to make it easier to sow the seeds evenly and at the same depth. You can make your own tamper using a piece of wood with a small block of wood nailed to it to make a ‘handle’. It is easier to look after seedlings if the seed has been sown in straight rows; make the rows using a plastic plant label. Check the packets for the correct depths for the seeds, and if you are sowing seeds in small cells then it is easier to make the holes using a dibber (or a pencil if you don’t have one). RootTrainers are ideal for larger seeds such as sunflowers. Don’t sow too densely or the seedlings will need more thinning out and will be more likely to become drawn, leggy and weak. Once in place, just cover the seed with compost. If you are sowing larger seed into cells, just pop the seeds in to the prepared holes and cover to the required depth. Next, use a watering can with the rose attached and water thoroughly. If the seed sown was quite small,

it is best to stand the tray in a shallow tray or bowl of water, so the compost absorbs water from below – this way the seeds are less likely to be displaced. Finally, label your seed trays clearly, ideally with a permanent marker. Many perennials need heat for the seed to germinate reliably. Put the trays, pots or cells into a propagator, standing each on moist capillary matting. Once the seedlings appear, gradually lower the temperature and then prick each one out into its own pot. Keep them fed and watered as they grow and in just a few weeks or months you will have some great plants ready for the garden. Canine Hydrotherapy Does your dog need some extra help?

Y

ou may have had experience of a pet getting stiff or limping as a symptom of arthritis or suffering from a joint problem like hip or elbow dysplasia. Some breeds are predisposed to joint problems which is why it is vital to take your dog for regular check ups to see your vet, and take advice from the professionals with regards to feeding, exercise, insurance and disease prevention.

from hard ground this activity is a much more comfortable way to exercise and build muscle. Hydrotherapy is indicated for a wide range of conditions including; • Osteoarthritis • Joint surgery (cruciate, patella, hip replacement, arthroscopy) • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia • Neurological and muscle wasting conditions • Obesity The benefits of Hydrotherapy include; • Relief of pain, swelling or stiffness! • Muscle strengthening and maintenance! • Increased tissue healing • Increased mobility • Fitness and weight loss

The Veterinary Surgeon may prescribe anti inflammatory medication to control symptoms, along with joint supplements, exercise and diet advice. Another tool we use to improve the symptoms of stiffness and lameness is Hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy is a form of non weight bearing water based exercise which provides resistance and buoyancy. The warm water (29-32 degrees celsius) encourages blood flow and oxygen to the muscles, letting the limbs create a much better range of movement than on land. Because the water supports the dog and there is no concussion

We are lucky enough to have a great relationship with our local Canine Hydrotherapy Centre, Operation K9 Ltd. Based in Sherburn, Malton and run by Registered Veterinary Nurse Rebecca Robinson with Canine Hydrotherapist James Wilkinson and Freya Mansell. If you think hydrotherapy may benefit your dog please get in touch with us for a Veterinary referral or contact Operation K9 direct on 01944 710044 or www.operationk9.co.uk

Join Ryedale Dog Rescue this year and help us spread the three 'Rs'... Rescue - Help us to raise vital funds so that we can save more dogs lives Rehome - Rescue dogs make the best family pets, so don’t buy - adopt a rescue and tell your friends too! Re-educate - Help us to spread our message about responsible dog ownership and the importance of neutering Every dog deserves a loving home, so let’s work together to try and make that a reality. We would like to say a HUGE THANKYOU to all our fabulous fundraising volunteers and everyone who donated items for our pop up shop - The final total will be on our Facebook page soon - An amazing start to the fundraising year!

DOG OF THE MONTH: WOODY Woody is a stunning brindle Staffordshire Bull Terrier and is approximately 12-18 months old. He came to the rescue in a very stressed state but has settled well and is a really friendly boy.

Due to his age and personality, an understanding and active home would suit this young man best, so if you would like to find out more about Woody or any of the dogs we currently have for adoption call us on 07581 324153.

For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. The Dangers of Bulbs Michelle Grahame RVN Station House Vets At last, the cold grey days of winter are behind us & spring is well and truly here! Many of us are rediscovering our gardens and woodlands that are coming back to life with the beautiful vibrant colours that we have all so missed. Along with this amazing kaleidoscope of colour comes some hidden, potentially harmful, risks to our furry friends. In our gardens spring bulbs have burst from the ground and are giving us magnificent displays of colour. Many of these bulbs and some plant material from their flowers are highly toxic and pose a real threat to our pets. Examples of bulbs that are known to be highly toxic and poisonous to animals are daffodils (Narcissus species) and autumn flowering crocus (Colchicum Autumnale). Other bulbs that are toxic and can make your pet ill are tulips, hyacinths (including Grape Hyacinths), primrose, spring flowering crocuses and lily of the valley. Many varieties of lily are extremely toxic and can prove deadly. All parts of the plant are poisonous, even the pollen and can cause kidney failure in cats. The symptoms of poisoning can vary as different toxins act in different ways. Signs can range from increased salivation and drooling, irritation of the mouth or skin, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, abdominal pain. Your pet may become either subdued or hyperactive and distressed, or you may notice they are disorientated and seem unsteady on their feet or even have a seizure or collapse and become unconscious. Symptoms of poisoning can occur immediately or take up to several days to show symptoms, so stay vigilant. If you are at all suspicious that your pet may have become poisoned by a plant or bulb you should contact your Veterinary Practice immediately and, if possible, give them the following information: • Which plant or bulb your pet has come in to contact with. • How much of the plant or bulb material has been eaten. • How long ago did it happen.

If you take your pet to the vets for treatment it can be very useful to take a piece of the remaining plant material or bulb with you. The treatment for poisoning can vary greatly depending on what toxin has been ingested and how it affects the body. Your vet will examine your pet and may give treatment. They may need to make the pet vomit by using special medicines (please do not try to do this at home without veterinary advise as some products used to make animals vomit can cause more harm than good). Regardless of what treatment and care your pet needs, they will stand a better chance of recovery and survival the sooner they get veterinary care. To find out more about toxic bulbs and plants and what effects they can have on the body you can access information on www. PetPoisonHelpline.com If you are at all concerned about your pet please seek immediate advise from your Veterinary Surgeon.

Scarecrows Return to Slingsby

N

estled at the foot of the Howardian Hills surrounding Castle Howard, within the Vale of Pickering spreading out to its north and east, Slingsby will once again be adorning its village with a mix of handmade modern and traditional interpretations of the Scarecrow, shown in a variety of forms to amuse and delight. Slingsby Scarecrow Festival takes place over the May Day weekend running from 12 noon Saturday 29th April through to Monday 1st May. Scarecrow entries are displayed around the Village of Slingsby and Scarecrow trails are available to purchase for £2. Scarecrow trails are available from our ‘pop up’cafe in the Methodist Chapel, or from Robin Hood Caravan Park or the Village Shop.

Our pop up cafe will be serving refreshments and homemade cake and savouries and will run alongside our ‘pre loved’ children’s stall. As the Scarecrow Festival runs into the May Day Monday, it is joined by the traditional May day festivities which take place on the village green. These include May Pole dancing with traditional stalls and refreshments. So, Slingsby Scarecrow Festival provides excellent entertainment for all ages, and coupled with the May Day festivities, is heart-warming traditional fare. Each year the Scarecrow entries and standard of creativity increase, providing any one attending the trail with delight and wonder. So, we invite all to visit to the Scarecrow Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend and remember to vote for your favourite Scarecrow to be in with a chance of winning a prize.
