S
pring at last, and time to make that fresh start we’ve been putting off since the beginning of 2015! In the old days, spring cleaning was about cleaning the accumulated winter soot and grime from your home; opening up the windows and making it smell fresh and clean again. As well as spring cleaning our homes, spring is also a great time to look at ourselves. What about learning a new skill, starting a course (page 6), visiting somewhere new or simply joining a local group? Nicky and I will be taking part in the Body for Life 6 week lifestyle challenge at Malton Community Sports Centre (page 48) in the hope that we can brave the beaches this summer! Why not come and join us in the competition (but no laughing!). Our gardens will be coming to life this month so we’ve devoted a number of pages in this month’s magazine to businesses who can help give your garden a fresh look this spring. My other half will be out scarifying (!) the lawn, in pursuit of the perfect stripes, whilst bemoaning the rise of rotary mowers. I’ll look forward to having a glass of wine on the patio! Easter weekend brings church services, fairs, art exhibitions and markets. With the improvement in the weather (I hope) and a never ending list of local events, there’s really no excuse for not making the best of the bank holiday weekend. At the Handy Mag, we are very proud of how we support our local area. It is the mix of business advertising alongside free community/charity groups and events that makes the magazines what they are. We receive great feedback from both businesses and community groups and as a reader of the magazines, please remember to tell businesses that you found them here. Next month in our May editions, we’ll be focussing on local food. Until next month...

A fresh new look at Steam and Moorland Steam and Moorland Garden and Machinery Centre will still be serving up its friendly, helpful staff who are on hand to help with any gardening problem or question you may have. Whether you need help with your lawnmower, a new patio plant, a gardening gift or simply a relaxing cup of tea, visit Steam and Moorland this spring and see the changes for yourself.
D
riving between Malton and Pickering, you may have noticed a smart new addition to the buildings at Steam and Moorland Garden and Machinery Centre. Situated on the A169, the garden centre now boasts a new entrance area linking the garden and machinery showrooms with brand new restaurant upstairs with wide ranging views. The Garden Centre was created by Charles Hopkinson, and has been open since 2001. With the Machinery Centre opening in 2006, there is everything you need to make your garden perfect. The small café has been open since 2001 and was in need of an upgrade. Charles says “We wanted to make our café more welcoming for our customers and the empty space between our two buildings seemed like the ideal place to create something special.” The new entrance to the Centre is now a light airy space with the garden centre to the left and machinery centre to the right. Upstairs (or up in the new lift) will be the new restaurant – The Engine Shed. A large expanse of glass means that you can have lunch with a view inside or on the new balcony. Charles says that even on wintery days you can feel the warmth of the sun on the balcony area, although the restaurant also boasts underfloor heating so you can be warm and cosy whatever the weather outside. The Engine Shed serves wholesome, homemade good value food to around 140 covers. This is an increase of 100 on the old café so there’s plenty of space for groups of cyclists, ramblers and coach parties to enjoy a snack and warm drink together!

Di Keal - the only candidate with a real track record of delivering for local people Campaigning Di Keal has a record of service to the Ryedale community that is second to none - now she is fighting to champion the rights of local people as your MP.
D
i has lived in the area for 25 years with husband, Howard, where they have brought up three daughters in Norton.
NHS – Di will fight to safeguard life-long health care, free at the point of delivery, where people want to see it delivered - close to our community where it can be easily accessed. Jobs and the economy
Di will work with local partnerships to ensure we attract and retain increasing numbers of quality jobs that provide decent wages.
Young people
Our children should be supported to get the best from education whatever their background. Thousands of pounds is being invested in local schools as a result of the Liberal Democrat Pupil Premium and we bring in free school lunches for all children under five from April.
She is a town and district councillor and has built a reputation for campaigning on the local issues that matter. Di’s record of delivering for local people in Ryedale over the last 15 years: • Di organised a successful £450,000 buy-out working with club members to save Ryedale Indoor Bowls Club from closure • The club is now being revitalised as a community hub featuring bowls, a dance school, playgroup and function suite. • Together, Di and Howard Keal fought for the £10.3 million flood alleviation scheme that has protected Malton, Norton and Old Malton from major flooding for more than a decade.
Di’s priorities for Malton & Thirsk:
Pensions
The Liberal Democrats have delivered the ‘triple lock’ guaranteeing decent pensions, stopping their fall in value under decades of Labour and Tory rule. • Di secured a £1 million contribution from Ryedale District Council towards the flood protection nearing completion for Pickering. • Di is a founder member and driving force behind the Castle Garden Project, revealing a lost garden and creating a five acre park in the heart of Malton and Norton.
Environment
Di has spoken out against the invasive and hugely damaging fracking industry wrecking our countryside and risking health. There is no other candidate with a record of public service to the community anything like Di’s – no other parliamentary candidate who has done more to deserve your vote on May 7.

As Mad as a March Gardener
P
alpitations, sweaty palms, blurred vision… no, I’ve not just been to see 50 Shades of Grey – this is simply my status quo for March, the craziest of gardening months! Thirty one days to pack in as much sowing, planting, re-organising, building and pruning as is humanly possible - no wonder my annual bout of March Affective Disorder (MAD) is kicking in. I think most gardeners will agree, it’s not just the jousting Hares that have the monopoly on the madness that this month brings. Everywhere you look there is new growth – buds are bursting on the early flowering Magnolias, Cherries and Camellias and my very favourite shrub, Coronilla glauca. I was tempted into buying a lovely Edgeworthia grandilflora the other day, a small choice shrub which is perfectly hardy and enjoys similar conditions to Rhododendrons. As it has a powerful scent, I put it straight in the greenhouse where its big fat yellow and white flowers are now pumping out a

RYEDALE • APRIL 2015 • ISSUE 109 heady scent, competing with a few perfumed pots of polyanthus, freesias and early citrus – just what the doctor ordered on a chilly March day! There’s something special about scented flowers at this time of the year and probably, of all the shrubs, the Winter Sweet, or Chimonanthus praecox, takes the biscuit for the biggest, most powerful whiff in spring. Visually it’s a bit of an ungainly beast but, trust me, if you can find a nice sheltered spot for one, you most certainly won’t be disappointed. As well as sniffing plants and planning a few new gardens for customers, I’ve spent most of this last week emptying three large compost bins. When I say emptying, what I really mean is sorting, as it entailed separating the accumulated decomposing biomass from the last twelve months into compost, nearly compost and “unknown.” Intriguingly, the unknown pile included numerous dead gardening gloves, a pair of pruners, some heavily corroded kitchenalia and a couple of very annoyed frogs! Not a composting system that Monty Don would be proud of, I’m afraid (in fact he’d have a hissy fit), as we haven’t had the time or inclination to turn any of the bins in accordance with the Don Composting Bible. In fact, we normally plant a few marrows and courgettes in one of the bins during the summer
“Garden centres are now primed for their busiest time of the year, with their gunnells well and truly loaded with a beguiling variety of seeds, plants, bulbs and trees – it is SO tempting to do a supermarket dash and fill a trolley with completely unsuitable plants.” and they produce fruits the size of small Zeppelins, thanks to the assorted nutrients on offer. All in all it was a sweaty, back-breaking exercise, the net result of which was over forty barrow loads of good hearty compost for the beds and an early bath for the frogs released into the pond! Garden centres are now primed for their busiest time of the year, with their gunnells well and truly loaded with a beguiling variety of seeds, plants, bulbs and trees – it is SO tempting to do a supermarket dash and fill a trolley with completely unsuitable plants.

“Employing the services of a garden consultant, particularly one with expertise in planting schemes, can help you realise just what you can do with your garden and prevent any expensive plant massacres!”
Regrettably, a large proportion of these will end up suffering a slow and lingering demise, resulting in a shabby looking garden and a happy garden centre owner when you have to repeat the process in a few month’s time. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Just as you wouldn’t reach for the Black and Decker to self-administer some root canal work when your tooth starts giving you some gip, it would pay dividends to spend some time planning any improvements to your garden with a professional beforehand. Employing the services of a garden consultant, particularly one with expertise in planting schemes, can help you realise just what you can do with your garden and prevent any expensive plant massacres! Jonathan Wild Gardening Consultant – and ever so slightly MAD!

EMILY... ON EASTER
EXAM STRESS I remember the more innocent times when Easter meant Easter: a nice two week break with nothing more to worry about than the ever present threat of Easter egg theft courtesy of my two sisters. But for the past few years, Easter has become a marker of the end of learning and the start of revision. Suddenly, those exams that seemed so far away are hurtling towards you at a startling speed. Scarier still, it marks the time where it is all down to you. The teachers that have worked so hard all year to pump information into our marshmallow-like young minds pass the baton of responsibility across to us students. Whether it’s A Levels or GCSEs, Easter is a stressful time for many young people. I vividly recall my first exam season, where my year was called into the end of term assembly and told that we should be doing five hours of revision a day in preparation for our GCSEs. Eek! The look of sheer dread that was passed from student to student spoke volumes about our experiences to come. It’s easy to become lost in a constant cycle of exams and resits and revision, but only recently has it hit me that this is my last exam season. This is my last exam filled Easter. At home, anyway! With University places dependant on my results, this is the first time that exams have had any tangible consequence. Now is the time to keep calm, focus and study harder than I ever have before. Parents; please do not take this as an excuse to not buy your teenagers any chocolate this Easter holiday. I don’t know the science behind it, but I can assure you that it helps! RYEDALE FESTIVAL REACHES OUT TO A YOUNGER AUDIENCE St Peter’s Church, Church, Norton – Norton Friday 10th April 2015 at Launch Concert: Friday 10th April, 7.30pm, at St Peter’s (Malton) fantastic start. I hope lots of under 25s will take advantage of the special offer of £1 tickets – and watch this space for more offers like this as we build up to the main festival.’ ‘Endymion always communicate the pleasure they experience in music making’ – The Times. ‘Startling virtuosity from all concerned’ – Daily Telegraph ‘Profound performances of the impossible’ – The Guardian ‘A powerful sense of energy and mystery evoked by Endymion’ – The Daily Telegraph ‘The brilliant Endymion’ – The Sunday Times
Tickets are only £1 to under 25s for the Launch Concert of the 2015 Ryedale Festival – one of several initiatives the festival is undertaking this year to reach out to a wider audience. To help launch the festival in style the festival welcomes Endymion, an ensemble of world-class chamber musicians, to St. Peter’s Church, Norton on Friday 10th April. Looking forward to the (hopefully) warmer days ahead, the ‘brilliant’ Endymion (The Sunday Times) open with Beethoven’s famous Spring Sonata for violin and piano, followed by a subtle and intimate work by Brahms: his trio for clarinet, cello and piano, that he came out of retirement to compose after hearing the inspirational playing of a talented clarinettist. The concert ends on a high-note with a rare performance of a sextet by Dohnányi (for the eagle-eyed music listeners out there, a hint at the Austro-Hungarian theme that runs throughout the forthcoming festival), written for the unusual combination of clarinet, horn, string trio and piano. The festival’s director, pianist Christopher Glynn, describes it as ‘a fabulous piece… big-boned, full of great tunes, instrumental colour, dramatic contrasts and lots of humour.’ The launch concert provides a springboard for the main festival that takes place between 17th July and 2nd August, and after the Endymion’s performance the full programme of concerts, talks, workshops, the festival’s opera, and all the other events taking place in the summer will be revealed. Director Christopher Glynn said: ‘Endymion convey a real sense of joy and energy in their music making and I know they will get our 2015 festival off to a 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ost people are aware that Inheritance tax and care costs can wipe out a lifetime of savings. If you are concerned about this you obviously need reassurance that your adviser fully understands this complex area of advice. I’m a member of the “Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA)”, a not-for-profit organisation that helps people find trusted advisers who understand financial needs in later life. SOLLA advisers undertake additional training to gain specialist knowledge and develop real expertise before they are awarded this independent accreditation. I recently attended a SOLLA workshop when psychologist, Lynda Shaw, explored the difficulties of advising elderly clients about financial matters. Lynda has undertaken significant research on the role that emotions play in our actions and behaviour in everyday life. Lynda gave a fascinating and, to
That explains a lot about why people don’t put plans in place to make sure their family, and not the Tax Man, benefits from their life savings. It’s not an immediate threat so you ignore it. And when it is an immediate threat – in other words you’re on your last legs – it’s too late to do anything about it. That’s why the Tax Man collects billions in this tax every year. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything to change human behaviour. But I can keep banging the drum that Inheritance Tax is pretty much a voluntary tax. As the late Roy Jenkins, MP, put it “Inheritance Tax is a voluntary tax payable by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue”. ADVOCACY ALLIANCE
YOU SPEAK, I LISTEN, TOGETHER WE DO
A
dvocacy means one person speaking out on behalf of another person or enabling a person to speak out for themselves.
Advocacy Alliance is a voluntary organisation, with a small team working throughout Ryedale, Scarborough and Whitby areas. This dedicated team of volunteers can help make your voice heard, find out information, assist you in making choices and ensure your rights. The service is free, independent and confidential. Many people experience times when they do not feel in full control of their lives and find they are not being listened to. Some people have disadvantages or disabilities which make the support of an advocate critical. Volunteers at Advocacy Alliance can help in many situations by approaching people in authority such as social services or housing, making phone calls, letter writing, or pursuing complaints on your behalf and offering support in meetings. Wendy James, a local volunteer, says “Being an advocate is just so rewarding. It’s about helping those who feel disempowered, can’t find a way through a maze of problems. Just listening, suggesting ways forward, speaking on their behalf, maybe writing letters, most of all giving confidence to those who felt that their voice was not heard. It is often challenging, but if you have a heart for the underdog, enjoy problem solving and the chance to use the skills and experience gained perhaps in an earlier career, it could be for you” The team are looking for volunteers to help support an increasing need. Are you are a good listener, a good communicator, willing to speak up for someone else, able to cope with a challenge? Interested in becoming a volunteer? Training, expenses and support are provided. Help turn someone’s life around – Advocacy Alliance would love to hear from you. 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A warm welcome in a new showroom
L
ocal stove manufacturers Town and Country Fires in Pickering have seen interest in stoves increase significantly in recent years. To accommodate demand, they now have two large showrooms as well as their local factory. Stoves have now been moved from a space inside the factory into a new warm showroom sitting directly opposite. There are a vast array of stoves in designs and colours to suit any taste and with similar stoves now grouped in different areas, it is easy to make the best choice for your home. Town and Country Fires is a family run business based in Pickering. Once farmers, the
40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Thurlow family took the big decision to diversify and as a consequence started the stove business in 1977. Gaining a wealth of experience over the years and using a combination of old and new techniques, has led to the company developing and manufacturing some of the best, energy efficient, solid fuel and wood burning stoves in the world. Their products are available from over 160 approved outlets across the UK. The full range of solid fuel and wood burning stoves all carry certified efficiency ratings and comply with EN 13240 2001. They are also Hetas approved and C.E. marked. Town and Country Fires have also kept to their Yorkshire roots
by employing skilled, local staff and using local suppliers where possible. Even the stoves have local Yorkshire names such as Glaisdale, Runswick and Rosedale! While black is still a favourite colour, there is a selection of inspiring shades available: shimmering rose, surf sand, honey glow brown, pewter and metallic blue could blend in with your home decor. Some stoves also come with their own in-built log store. The stoves are ingeniously designed using the best British steel, which is laser-cut, bent in a special CNC press, welded and then hand finished. The glass doors are also given an air wash, helping maintain

With MCS Accreditation, Town and Country Fires are accredited suppliers of Jolly Mec biomass boilers which are made in Italy and designed as complete heating systems for homes. Jolly Mec boilers use wood or wood pellets as fuel and the heat is captured and output optimised within the boiler, which is connected to either a radiator system or to warm air heating systems. As well as knowing the fuel comes from a renewable source, harmful emissions are reduced and the efficiency levels are around 93%. So more heat is created with less fuel, which also helps reduce overall fuel bills.” Government funding is now available for those who wish to convert or install a biomass boiler – ask at Town and Country Fires for more information.
One of Britain’s leading manufacturers of multi-fuel stoves - extremely efficient and clean burning. Town and Country Fires also stock a wide range of fire surrounds, fireplace accessories, kiln dried logs and wood pellets. Visit either of their dedicated
showrooms, which are warm, welcoming and you can browse at your leisure. And if you have any questions, the Town and Country team are on hand to help.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

How to make your Conservatory feel like a Proper Room
I
f you’ve ever tried to use your conservatory in the winter, you’ll know that it can feel like a cold, damp and dismal part of the house.
In all the glossy conservatory sales catalogues, the sun is always shining, the garden is blooming and everyone is having fun being in the bright and clean ‘new room’. The reality is that most conservatories are too hot to use in comfort in the summer, and certainly too cold to use in the winter. Condensation can be a problem in the winter, and it’s too bright to watch a tv in there in the summer. And when it rains, the noise can be deafening! Most conservatories have been built as temporary structures and usually as a less expensive alternative to an extension. This means that they don’t comply with the building regulations that an extension would have to do especially in terms of the thermal efficiency. The team at local specialists Inceil talk to homeowners every day who want to be able to use 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Before
their conservatory all year round and not on the handful of days when the temperature is just right! Their cost-effective solution is to fit an insulated ceiling fitted to the existing roof structure in just 1 or 2 days. The new plastered ceiling follows the contours of the existing roof and uses the most thermally dynamic insulation available. Your conservatory will feel like a proper room with a better temperature year round. And you don’t have to do anything to the external roof. It’s important when having any works done that you are happy with the people working in your home. Customers frequently comment on how polite and friendly everyone is in the Inceil team – and that they cleaned up when they had finished! On the Inceil informative website www.inceil.co.uk you can watch an installation video which shows exactly how the process works, and request a free survey and quote. Or give them a call on 01904 891936. In just one or two days, your conservatory can be transformed into a comfortable and usable part of your home. An activity pack will be available to buy on-site. Visit the Dalby website for more info and to plan your visit.

proud to receive, from Prince Andrew himself, The Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award, which recognizes excellence and rewards outstanding community projects throughout the whole of Yorkshire and Humberside. At the award ceremony Angela Kirkham had the great honour of being one of only eight people from the whole of Yorkshire and Humberside nominated for the annual Henry Woods Outstanding Leadership award. Also in October 2014, Ryedale Youth Theatre and Kirkham Henry Performing Arts were delighted to be jointly honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the fifth annual Pride of Malton and Norton Awards organised by The Malton & Pickering Mercury. It is quite extraordinary that there is such a wealth of young talent in our local community and we always seem to be blessed with a very strong and focused cast, who are to be thanked and congratulated for their continued hard-work, commitment and dedication. in association with Kirkham Henry Performing Arts

‘EVITA is a musical based on the life story of Eva Peron, the second wife of the Argentine president Juan Peron. Eva Duarte was born in 1919, illegitimate, poor, without privilege. She became the most powerful woman her country had ever seen, the First Lady of Argentina at the age of 27. She died in 1952 of cancer, aged 33. When Julie Covington’s wonderful version sent ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ soaring to the top of the hit parade in 1976, it not only ensured the success of EVITA when it opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in June 1978 but also established Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber as the most successful partnership in the field of popular music. Ryedale Youth Theatre in association with Kirkham Henry Performing Arts is a voluntary organisation, (registered charity no. 1053362), which encourages and instructs young people age 8-18 in all aspects of musical theatre. The company was formed in 1991 and from a modest start it has grown to become one of the most well respected youth theatres in the country. WEDDING SMILES Whether you are organising your wedding or have been invited to one we all want to look our best. Even the most by Christine Parker fabulous dress or outfit can BDS (GDC 72136) be undone by chipped or stained teeth so here is some sound advice to get them ready for the camera. Try to plan well in advance if you need braces. For teeth that are poorly positioned or crowded, orthodontics (braces) may be the best answer. This type of treatment can take up to 2 years , some quicker forms are available which concentrate just on the front teeth and can take as little as 6 months. This type of treatment can transform smiles which have quite major irregularities. If you do not require, or want braces tooth whitening can significantly improve their appearance. This must be provided by a registered dentist , beauticians are not legally able to offer tooth whitening services. A full dental check should be provided before bleaching takes place. Never buy materials over the internet, they have been known to cause permanent damage and you have no idea of what is in them. If your teeth are chipped or stained they could benefit from professional cleaning, or cosmetic white fillings, veneers and crowns to enhance their appearance and colour. Gaps can be treated by implants, bridges or a bespoke denture, these can all provide a natural looking aesthetic result. Concerned about your breath, this can have many causes some of them dental, your dentist will be able to offer you specific advice to boost your confidence in the reception line. METHOD:
COOKING
This is one of the easiest recipes to make but when you tell people you’ve made your own honeycomb, they won’t fail to be impressed. The main thing you need to remember is that you need a really big saucepan with high sides; you are dealing with a caramel at around 150oc which can burn and be really hard to clean off stovetops. Handled with care it poses no problem though.
HOMEMADE HONEYCOMB
If you love a Crunchie bar then being able to make honeycomb at home will be a revelation to you. On its own or dipped in chocolate, it is a wonderful treat.
INGREDIENTS:
• 325g caster sugar • 50g honey • 125g liquid glucose • 15g bicarbonate of soda • 50ml water
Have a tray at least 20cm x 30cm lined with silicone paper or a silicone mat ready. Place all the ingredients except the bicarbonate of soda in a large saucepan with a thick base. Using a long handled whisk cook over a medium heat until it turns a light golden colour but not too dark, stirring gently. Add the bicarbonate of soda and whisk in for a few seconds until completely absorbed. The mix will foam and rise up the pan, so do be careful. Pour the mix out onto the lined tray. Allow to cool completely before touching. Soak the pan and all the remaining honeycomb will dissolve easily. Break into pieces and enjoy. You can store it in an airtight tub for a few weeks.

LAMINITIS
Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
M
ost people who have spent any significant amount of time with horses will be familiar with the condition of laminitis. Whilst laminitis is most commonly seen in small, overweight ponies that have had too much spring grass, it is a serious condition affecting horses of all breeds, ages and sizes, and can also be caused by a number of other conditions such as septic shock, retained placentas in mares, and Cushing’s Disease in older horses and ponies.
Laminitis is caused either by the actions of various hormones, or by substances called endotoxins circulating around the bloodstream, which are produced either from the fermentation of lush grass or from bacterial action elsewhere in the body. This causes an alteration of the blood supply in the foot, leading to damage of the sensitive laminae which attach the hoof wall to the bony structures of the foot and particularly to the pedal bone. In the early stages of the condition this damage is limited to inflammation, however in severe cases the tissues can be

Laminitis can show as a variety of signs, from a horse that is slightly uneven in shifting its weight on its forelegs, progressing to horses that are increasingly uncomfortable and reluctant to move, and in severe cases horses that lie down and refuse to get up because the pain in their feet is so severe. Veterinary advice should be sought immediately, because the longer a case is left, the more severe the damage is likely to become. Unfortunately a number of severe laminitis cases do have to be humanely destroyed each year, simply because the damage to the hoof is too great, and it is impossible to relieve the pain and restore normal foot structure. Treatment involves strict rest and the use of painkillers and drugs to alter the flow of blood in the hoof, and removal of the initial cause. X-rays are often taken of laminitic feet in order to assess the degree of damage to the hoof and to assess what further preventative and repair work needs to be undertaken. The vet will usually liaise closely with the farrier in order to reconstruct laminitic hooves and

As with any condition, prevention is better than cure, so if you know that your horse or pony has had laminitis in the past it is worth taking preventative measures. Severe restrictions on grazing for overweight ponies is necessary to prevent overload with sugar-rich young grass, and very regular observation and examination of horses or ponies’ feet for any signs of laminitis. There are also a number of alternative feeds available for horses that are particularly prone to laminitis. If you have any questions about laminitis, or are worried that your horse or pony may be at risk of developing the condition, please don’t hesitate to contact Mike Jones BVetMed Cert EP MRCVS, veterinary surgeon, who will be only too happy to help.

MAKE APRIL THE MONTH YOU HELP US TO PUT A SMILE ON THE FACE OF AN ABANDONED DOG... Here at Ryedale Dog Rescue we know that rescue dogs make fantastic family pets. We rescue dogs based purely on temperament. We are not breedist or ageist and believe every dog deserves a loving home. As volunteers we all own rescue dogs and if you decide you would like to adopt one of our dogs we will support you through the adoption process from the initial homecheck, where we aim to find out more about you and your family so we can match you with the right dog (Like us they all have different personalities!) right to beyond adoption when we are there for you at the end of the phone. We love every one of our dogs which is why we believe in responsible rehoming and finding our dogs the loving family home they deserve. So if you would like to know more about our rescue dogs please give us a call on 07581 324153
If you are unable to re-home a dog but would like to support us in other ways we are always grateful for donations, with every penny raised spent on the care of the dogs that we rescue. So why not swap this year’s Easter egg for a donation to the rescue instead - That way you will ensure both a slimmer waist and a happy rescue dog!
DOG OF THE MONT - ROO Roo is approximately two years old and is a very handsome lad. He’s a little timid around men when first meeting but soon comes out of his shell when he realises he’s safe. He is happiest in female company but this is something we’ll work on as time goes by. He is very responsive to food/treats so reward based training would be the way to go with him and he appears fine around other dogs. If you would like to meet Roo please contact us for an informal chat on 07581 324153.

MOTORING
Used Cars - Luxury Off-Roaders By Kit Johnson
Contrary to all predictions, big premium badge 4x4s are more popular than ever. They owe their survival to highly efficient diesel engines, but no other car can match their combination of luxury, space, practicality and prestige. Second hand, they are a huge bargain. Here is my pick of the bunch. RANGE ROVER (2002 - 2012) The 3rd generation of Land Rover’s classic was a huge improvement on the previous model. With handsome styling, a truly wonderful interior and ride comfort on a par with a Bentley, it was the Toff Roader to beat. The 3.6 litre diesel V8 is the engine of choice, smooth and powerful enough to haul this 3 tonne car up to 60 in 8.6 seconds while still delivering 25mpg. And, of course, the Range Rover is the mightiest of off road warriors. Choice is plentiful; I found a 2007 model with 70k on the clock for £17,500. FOR: Looks, prestige, comfort, great in the mucky stuff AGAINST: Slower and thirstier than its rivals BMW X5 (2006 – 2013) BMW’s sharply styled mudplugger is aimed more at Surrey mums than Yorkshire farmers. It has impeccable road manners, a classy interior and
plenty of room for some school run fun. Throw in excellent refinement, strong performance and a cosseting ride and what’s not to like? The excellent 3.0 litre V6 diesel is the one to go for, it’s as economical as a family saloon was not too long ago. The X5 is great value too; a fully specced 07 car with modest mileage can be yours for just £15k. FOR: Performance, handling, build quality, value AGAINST: Lacks prestige PORSCHE CAYENNE (2002 – 2010) Porsche took the unique approach of carrying across many of the traits of its legendary sports cars when it entered the SUV market. The result is a full sized 4x4 that can top 170mph and handles like a sports coupe. Taking some styling cues from the 911 was probably not such a good idea though. Porsche have softened their hard core approach over the years with the addition of a V6 petrol and even
a diesel, albeit a 290bhp one. If you’re going to own one of these beasts though, at least go for the Turbo – 450bhp and a 5.6 second 0-60 time. Compared to a 911, the Cayenne is cheap as chips. Expect to pay £16,000 for a 2005 plate with 70,000 miles under its belt. For: Brutal performance, sports car handling, Porsche cachet Against: Hefty thirst, only a mother could love that styling MERCEDES M CLASS (2005 – 2011) The Mercedes ML is an unsung hero of the premium SUVs. The ML is built like a tank and has acres of space with an unfussy but extremely comfortable interior. Buy a diesel: the 4.0 litre V8 has enough grunt to propel a ship but is a tad thirsty; the 3.0 litre V6 is a gem and provides nearly as much poke as the X5 with similar economy. I spotted an immaculate 07 car with a miniscule 31,000 miles on it for just £15,500. FOR: Bombproof build quality, great value, fantastic all rounder AGAINST: Barge like handling

FOXHOLES VILLAGE HALL An update from Foxholes Village Hall Committee
A
fter nearly thirty years of fundraising we have now made it to the third and final stage of the Big Lottery funding process and the possibility of a new Community Hall is in sight. Within a couple of months we hope to have the go ahead for this desperately needed magnificent £500k project. It will pave the way for a bright new future for the local residents of Foxholes, and its sister villages, who will soon be able to make good use of this self sustaining ultra modern amenity. It will replace a much loved but sadly dilapidated Victorian village hall, formerly the village school. We plan for our hall to last at least the next 100 years!
recently a cake stall at one of our regular library sessions and an Auction Pie and Pea supper in Newton. These are typical of the activities, supported by our whole community, which have over the last 30 years brought us to within touching distance of a new Community Hall. At the moment we can only support very limited activities, but the new hall will allow the villagers to engage in activities from wedding receptions and children’s parties, to indoor bowls and exercise clubs. Film nights and photography classes. We hear
there is already much excitement at the possibilities the new hall will hold. And in planning for the future, we will be able to invite large civic mobile units to park up next to the hall, thus reducing travelling time for local people who would otherwise have long distances access these services. If anyone needs any more information please contact David Mobbs on tyclwb@ talk21.com.

A GOOD READ By Willow Coby
The Reader by Bernhard Schlink This year sees the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the horrors of the Holocaust came to the world’s attention. In the intervening years many great pieces of literature have been written to explore why it happened, and the consequences.
One such book is The Reader by the German author, Bernhard Schlink. Set in West Germany in 1958, Michael, a 15-yearold falls ill with hepatitis and befriends a 36-year-old woman, Hanna. They develop a close relationship until she suddenly disappears a few months later. The narrative then skips to six years later where Michael, now a law student, is observing a war crimes trial. On trial are a group of female SS guards who served at Auschwitz and Michael has to battle his emotions. The issue of how ordinary Germans carried out Nazi orders is one that Germans have struggled to come to terms with and Schlink explores this in a touching manner. The style of writing is sparse at times – with little explanation offered to the reader at times. It can appear blunt, but offers a clarity that forces the reader to engage with the subject matter. It reflects how the post-war generations in Germany have struggled to come to terms with the actions of ordinary Germans during the war.

Serving Ryedale for 15 years
Once by Morris Gleiztman Adult literature is not alone in dealing with the Holocaust, and there are in fact many pieces of children’s literature that aim to introduce the events and their effects.
One such book is Once by Morris Gleiztman. It is the first is a series of four books which tell of the life of Felix, a 10 year old Polish Jew in 1942. For three years, Felix has lived in an orphanage, waiting for his parents return for him. They own a book shop and Felix believes that this is why they had to leave him. He has seen Nazis burning books and figures out that it must be dangerous to be a bookseller. His parents must have sent him to the orphanage to keep him safe. However, he soon learns that it is not being a bookseller that is dangerous. Gleiztman is very careful to write at an appropriate level for his young audience whilst not sanitising the dreadful events that Felix finds himself caught up in. The young reader will learn, along with Felix, exactly what is taking place across Europe. Yes, it is shocking and yes, be prepared for questions from a child who is reading this. It is aimed at readers in their first year or two at secondary school and offers a good age-appropriate introduction to a subject that they will most likely encounter in History or RE lessons.

COFFEE HOUSE CHURCH? Our monthly column by Andy Boxall,
General Architectural Drawing Services
Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
On the way to church a mother was giving instructions to her three children, “And, why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” Her son quickly responded, “Because people are sleeping!” They arrived at church and the children sat together in their pew. During the service the children soon forgot their mother’s instructions and the youngest giggled, sang, and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had enough. “Mother told us not to talk out loud in church.” “Why? Who’s going to stop me?’ the youngest asked. His sister pointed to the back of the church and said, “See those two men standing by the door? They’re hushers.” The funny things people think about church often amuse me but I’m also saddened when I think church is misunderstood. Church is often seen as an uninviting, cold and old fashioned building but that is not church. We don’t go to church; we are the church. Church is not a building it is a group of people, people who find inspiration, direction, encouragement and strength as they gather to meet with God and with each other. They are not confined to a building they can meet anywhere and at any time. It was this understanding that led us to start Coffee House Church. Wouldn’t church be great if you met in a warm, relaxed and modern building? Wouldn’t church be great if you could sit on a sofa, instead of a wooden pew? Wouldn’t church be great if you didn’t have to stay quiet but could relax and chat with friends? Wouldn’t church be great if not only could you listen and be inspired by others, but others would listen to you? Wouldn’t Church be great if it was a safe place to start a conversation, to ask difficult questions and explore faith? Wouldn’t church be great if you could make new friends and be a friend? Wouldn’t church be great if you could sit and drink great coffee and eat cake? Coffee House Church meets at Hope Central, 64 Castlegate, Malton, YO17 7DZ. The Coffee House opens from 6:50pm on a Sunday to purchase your favourite beverage and treat yourself to a piece of cake. During the evening there will be plenty of time to talk with friends, listen to music, hear the stories of others, ask questions, explore faith and connect with God. Perhaps instead of going to church it is time to be church? 70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Yellow wellies keep our charity’s lifesavers on sure footing during rescues. So whether you donate, fundraise or volunteer, let’s give it some welly and do something extraordinary! Alternatively, you can text MAYDAY to 70007 to donate £3. Locally the RNLI is investing in the future and will be rebuilding both Scarborough and Bridlington lifeboat stations. These will each be equipped with the newest member of the RNLI fleet, the Shannon class lifeboat. The Shannon is 50% faster than the lifeboats it replaces – ensuring that help reaches those in need even faster Throughout April and May, branches of the RNLI in Malton, Helmsley and York will be organising collections in support of this initiative. This Mayday we need volunteers to shake buckets, collect donations and help at events. You’ll get to be there with other enthusiastic supporters and you’ll have a lot of fun while you’re collecting. So why not join us? Ryedale Sports Club – Croquet Section
By John Hurd, Chairman of Ryedale Croquet
R
yedale Croquet start playing for the new season at Ryedale Sports Club on Thornton road in Pickering on Monday 30th March at 2pm and everyone is welcome. Mondays are our practice days for both Association and Golf croquet when instructions of new players are given. Equipment is available and all that is required is a pair of flat shoes or trainers. On Tuesdays at 2pm we practice Association croquet only but new members are very welcome. Then on Wednesdays, again at 2pm, we have Golf croquet only. Again everyone is welcome. Croquet is a game for all ages and abilities and good exercise for both mind and body. Costs are very reasonable at £1 green fees per session and annual membership of Ryedale Sports club (which lets you play other sports) is £40. You can also give it a try for 3 weeks for free before membership fees are payable.
ASSOCIATION CROQUET
This is a more competitive game played as singles or doubles. Again the object is to run hoops however only one player is on court at a time. A player’s turn continues as long as they manage to run hoops. This can be done by playing off other colours to get a good position on the next hoop. When a hoop is missed the next player takes over. This continues until one player has run all the hoops.
WHAT IS CROQUET?
For anyone wanting to give croquet a try, please come along.
GOLF CROQUET
Monday Association & Golf Croquet 2-5pm Tuesday Association Croquet 2-5pm Wednesday Golf Croquet 2-5pm
It is a ball game in which you strike the ball with a mallet, the object being to get the ball through a series of metal hoops. This is a simple game played by either 2 or 4 players. The object is to run the ball through a hoop to score a point. The first player to score 13 is the winner. There are four coloured balls and each player selects a colour. The players then take turns to strike their ball, to run a hoop or get into a position to do so on their next turn.
DAYS OF PLAY ARE:

LOCAL CHOIRS JOIN FORCES FOR CONCERTS Malton District Male Voice Choir is joining forces with Staxton Singers in April and June for a pair of new concerts – one in Malton and the other in Burniston near Scarborough. The two choirs first met at a National Association of Choirs singing festival in Scarborough last April which involved more than 200 singers and raised more than £2000 for charity. They agreed to meet and sing again together in two concerts this year. Staxton Singers, a mixed choir under Musical Director Stan Kell, will join the Malton choir for the first of those concerts on April 25th in Malton Methodist Church in Saville Street.

Marking its 30th anniversary this year, the Staxton group sings mainly in the Scarborough area and its repertoire ranges “from The Beatles to Bach”. Many of its concerts are for charities. Malton District Male Voice Choir, under its MD Vivien Wilcock, will join Staxton Singers again for a return concert in Burniston Village Hall near Scarborough on June 20th. It’s not the first time the Malton Choir, which goes into its ninth year in autumn, has shared concerts with other choirs. Last May it hosted a much-acclaimed concert in Malton School with visiting Newchurch Male Voice Choir from the Isle of Wight. It has also sung with other choirs in Scarborough and Bridlington and has held several joint concerts with Malton ‘sister’ choir Harmonia. The latest joint concerts are part of a season for Malton District Male Voice Choir in which the theme is ‘songs from the shows’. Songs from Gilbert & Sullivan, Les Miserables, South Pacific and Student Prince are among those on the latest programme. The April 25th Malton concert starts at 7.30 pm. Entry is £7 and includes light interval refreshments. 78 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

To Daffodils by The Pastoral Poet
The fields have cast a wintry shawl And donned a mantle mossy green. All liberated from the thrall, By Spring, the welcome libertine. The climbing sun and vernal dew, Conspired to coax the sappy buds To swell and swarm the nubile woods With trumpet blooms of saffron hue. How oft’ the fickle weather- vane, Had prophesied a change of mood? Though bent and bowed by wind and rain, They bore the storms with fortitude. Extending like a rich veined reef, In clumpy throng along the sward. Fair swayed the sprightly sovereign horde, Their cheery sojourn all too brief. The thrush pours forth his roundelay, Unvarying, this balladeer Will still be singing after May. The daffodils will disappear.

At St Peter’s Church, Norton, ‘Endymion’ will launch the Ryedale Festival in style with a performance of three very different works. Beethoven’s love of nature is heard in one of the most optimistic and joyful pieces to ever come from his pen - the Spring Sonata for violin and piano. In contrast, Brahms’ Clarinet Trio is an intimate, late work, full of poignant melodies. Finally, Endymion’s world-class players will show their virtuosity and passion in the big-hearted, exuberant and often witty Sextet by the Hungarian composer, Erno Dohnányi. After the concert, Artistic Director Christopher Glynn, will introduce the programme for the forthcoming festival 17 July-2 August and the 2015 Brochures will be distributed.

Elizabeth Strang was recruited as a guide when Tate Modern opened in 2000 and has since worked at both Tate Modern and Tate Britain. She specialises in 20th century art. This look at the life of Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) starts with her childhood in Yorkshire and her attachment to its landscape. Her work was further influenced by the land and sea when she settled in Cornwall later in her life. The inspiration she received from nature, together with her work ethic, resulted in her wonderful works in stone, wood and bronze. FOLK MUSIC NIGHT, HUTTON LE HOLE 11 APRIL With Beggars Bridge and supporting act and Emcee, David Swann. At Hutton Le Hole Village Hall at 7.30pm. Beggar’s Bridge have a great reputation on the folk and roots circuit. Having started out as a duo, playing mostly local venues, they have since blossomed and expanded into a 6-piece band capable of venturing into the realms of stirring folk rock, while retaining the ability to perform songs more in keeping with the stripped-back sound of traditional folk music. It’s not just the music which makes this a memorable evening - the spaces between are just as compelling, as the backgrounds to the song-stories are explained, usually with a good helping of earthy humour, and it all makes for an experience which is not only musically satisfying, but amusing and informative too.

Mickle Hill will be a retirement community comprising 90 purpose built retirement apartments and 78 bungalows in Pickering where the health and well-being of residents and members of the local community is high on the list of priorities. Mickle Hill’s residents will be part of a vibrant community enjoying a range of services including a restaurant, coffee shop, hair salon, convenience shop and personal care and assistance should they need it. And while Mickle Hill will have its own well-equipped gym, Peter Nelson, a local Personal Trainer, can offer gym services with health and fitness support to prospective residents and members of the local community before the gym is completed. At a recent gathering of prospective future residents of Mickle Hill, Peter talked about fitness, health and the benefits of exercise in later life. He also produces personal training programmes to support individual goals and aspirations. Peter’s clients include people with mobility problems, and others recovering from surgery, hip and knee replacements and rheumatoid arthritis. Mickle Hill is part of MHA, the national charity providing accommodation, care and support services to 16,000 older people nationwide. To find out more about Mickle Hill, please call 01751 363748 or email enquiries@mha.org.uk Contact Peter Nelson at: www.peternelsonpt.co.uk
