elcome to our April edition.

It’s been a busy few months at home. My other half is frantically trying to get his new greenhouse sorted before the spring weather sets in properly. You might guess that he will be growing fruit and veg and other useful plants in there but no! The much-loved cactus collection will get the whole greenhouse. The collection has travelled with us for over 25 years to all of our houses and has had locations from a back bedroom desk, a half shed/greenhouse set-up, cramped scruffy little greenhouse and, currently, our utility room. But this year it will be treated to a large luxury greenhouse and pride of place in the sunniest spot in the garden. I don’t have anything against the cacti (they are weird!) but it’s just not the most exciting plant collection in the world. When we got married my father-in-law actually sent us a card from the said cacti and that, I think, says it all! As you might have gathered, gardening is not really my thing. I’m very good at remembering plant names and I enjoy seeing the garden through changing seasons but I don’t often get out there and muck in. If gardening is not your thing either, why not contact one of our local advertisers to help you enjoy your outside space more. Hopefully Easter weekend will provide the sort of weather that will encourage us all to get out and about. There is so much to enjoy at this time of year and the Handy Mag is packed full as usual of everything you need to know. With Easter school

holidays looming, why not have a read through and find one of our great local events to keep your family entertained. Well done to Mr Bosworth from Kirkbymoorside for winning our February competition. Until next month…

EXCITING TIMES AT THE MILTON ROOMS

ou may have noticed an increased stirring of activity at Malton’s Milton Rooms recently – and if not, then a quick glance at the venue’s website or Facebook page might surprise you! You might also have become aware of the new ‘I love the Milton Rooms’ branding which has been a key aspect of the ongoing strategy to re-kindle interest in the building that dominates the south-west corner of the Market Place. The Milton Rooms is actually a complex of 3 different inter-connected spaces: a 1930’s Art Deco dancehall providing flexible and adaptable space; a 40-capacity studio bar; and The Assembly Rooms, an 1840’s Georgian ballroom facing Yorkersgate. Operating as a charitable limited company, The Milton Rooms is volunteer-operated and is largely self-funded from events and room-hire. The Board and Management Team are passionate and determined to continue providing great live entertainment. It has long been the home to Malton and Norton Musical Theatre’s pantomime in January and Ryedale Youth Theatre’s musical extravaganzas in April, as well as host to many community-related events including vintage dance classes and Musical Memories. Working

with specialist performers and promoters has become an important aspect of event programming. In conjunction with Blues aficionado Paul Winn, The Milton Rooms is now home to Ryedale Blues Club. In 2019, new collaborations with Malton’s own awardwinning presenter and entertainer Ryan Swain will generate some fantastic family entertainment and talent show events and, in September, the venue will host Ryedale’s first ComiCon/ Cosplay event. If you’re looking for space to host a 40-400 capacity meeting, party or other event, there are 3 great spaces to choose from at highly competitive rates – and some great food suppliers on the doorstep! Being a venue creates many different volunteering opportunities and if you’re tempted by the footlights and rubbing shoulders with some well-known names please feel free to get in touch via volunteers@ themiltonrooms.com or on 01653 696240. The board is in need of 2-3 potential new directors/trustees, especially with fundraising/business development, artistic strategy and operational team management experience. www.themiltonrooms.com / www.facebook.com/ themiltonrooms

BRING YOUR STONE BACK TO LIFE

R

eplacing a stone floor or patio can be expensive, but getting fresh-looking flooring and tiles doesn’t have to be. And that’s where Stoneclenz steps in. They’re a family business based near Malton who specialise in deep cleaning and restoring a huge range of interior and exterior floors and surfaces to restore to bring them back to life. Their cleaning service is capable of removing years’ worth of dirt, carbon and algae that will reveal surfaces and colours you never even knew you had! Stoneclenz have the specialist equipment, expertise and over 35 years’ experience to work on all kinds of surfaces. These include: • Interior hard floor cleaning • Stone and tile repair (terracotta, ceramic, Victorian tiles, granite and marble) • Stone fireplace restoration • Anti-slip treatment • Black spot removal • Stone building cleaning (Yorkshire stone, brickwork, limestone and concrete) • Exterior patio cleaning (flagstones and block paving) • Synthetic flooring (linoleum and vinyl) Before you go ahead and spend a fortune replacing your flooring or tiling, Stoneclenz’s fully trained and qualified team will be able to breathe new life into it. Different stones require different ways of cleaning, so they can advise on how best to achieve just that. In fact, they even offer a free demonstration to show you how good their results are. And with spring and summer just around the corner, now’s the right time to tick it off your to-do list so you can make the most of your outside space during warmer weather. For your free site survey, demonstration and quote, call Stoneclenz on 0800 170 7660 or email stoneclenz@ aol.com. You can also find more information on their website, www.stoneclenz. com.

CHARLIE’S COLUMN The new RSF Shopping Scheme

“The two main aims are to offer our young adults something productive and beneficial to do with their time and also offer some help towards other vulnerable people in the community” These are the words of Becky Stephenson, one of the main workers at Ryedale Special Families (RSF) who is setting up a new shopping scheme in Pickering and surrounding areas to benefit the community who may otherwise meet. I interviewed Becky this week. Here’s what I found out: When did you start on the idea of the shopping scheme? RSF started working with another provider about 3 years ago that offers the shopping scheme in Malton and Norton to help the young adults they support develop independence skills and also support people in the local community. We thought we’d do the same in Pickering. What is the Shopping Scheme? The shopping scheme is there to help people in the community. They may live on their own, struggle to get out in bad weather or due to health conditions. We will visit local shops to get weekly food for someone who cannot get there themselves, and then drop it off at their home. At present we are just providing this in the Pickering area and there will be a £2 per shop charge for the service.

How do you think it will benefit those members of RSF working in the scheme? It will help the young adults we support at RSF build independence skills around budgeting and timekeeping. It will also help with social skills and give young people the chance to give something back to their local community. Some of our members would love to work towards getting a job and this shopping scheme will help give them the skills they will need to do this. When’s the latest date you want the scheme to start? The Scheme will be up and running by summer 2019. If anyone is interested please get in touch with me at Ryedale Special Families on becky@ ryedalespecialfamilies.org.uk or call Ryedale Special Families on 01653 699000.

re you planning a wedding, birthday party, christening or corporate event? Then A Reight Yorkshire Do could be just who you need. As a family business based in the village of Birdsall near Malton they provide catering for all types and sizes of events with a country theme and a Yorkshire twist. A Reight Yorkshire Do decorate their vintage horse trailer just for your occasion and fit with your theme. It can be adorned in pretty bunting, fairy lights and fresh flowers that will look great in photos and add a touch of fun. What’s more, just because you’re catering for a large number of guests, it doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality - they source all their food from esteemed local suppliers, so everything is as fresh and high quality as possible. Choose from a variety of local dishes to serve, depending on your taste, including: • Yorkshire pudding wraps stuffed with your favourite roast and all the trimmings. • Customisable artisan pies with mash, peas and gravy (vegetarian options available too). • Yorkshire Wolds jacket potatoes with delicious toppings. • After-party breakfasts for when you have overnight guests. The owners, Barry and Cressida, say they can also “add red hearts to the top of pies for weddings, or the names of the bride and groom to large sharing pies” for a unique talking point at your event. If you’re looking for an easy, hassle-free way to feed a large party while providing fun, informal and memorable catering, then A Reight Yorkshire Do would love to help. To talk to Barry and Cressida about catering your event, call them on 01944 768266 or email areightyorkshiredo@gmail.com. For more information, visit their website www. areightyorkshiredo.com. SPRING IS IN THE AIR By The Revd Tim Robinson,

Vicar of Helmsley and Upper Ryedale, Area Dean of Northern Ryedale, Chair of the House of Clergy, Diocese of York

S

pring is in the air! In fact, as I write there are daffodils and crocuses springing up everywhere. So probably by the time you read this Spring will have sprung for sure!

The Christian observance of Lent and Easter is of course associated with the new life of Spring. Lent is a long period of waiting (Forty days and forty nights as the old hymns goes) and the Easter is the celebration of resurrection. Christ bursts from the tomb offering new life to all. Most of our lives are a mix of both difficult and easier stuff, good and bad, light and shade – it’s called the human condition. The pattern of the seasons, especially winter in to spring, and the rhythm of the Christian year allows us to reflect. This little Haiku by Mary Havran called Easter Lilies sums things up for me:

SPRING INTO ACTION AT DALBY NEW HORIZONS IN LOW DALBY

We’re delighted that Hidden Horizons now have an Explorer Hub in Low Dalby courtyard. It’s their new base for stargazing, bushcraft, tree climbing, birthday parties, forest school trips and the new Dalby Adventurers Kids Holiday Club running in April. Next time you’re at Dalby, why not drop by to find out how you and your family can become Forest Explorers! Visit www. hiddenhorizons.co.uk, call 01723 817017 or email contact@hiddenhorizons.co.uk

SIGN UP FOR STONE CARVING

Places on our stone carving sessions booked up quickly following BBC Countryfile’s feature on Dalby and our dry stone wall maze! There are still some places in April and May for you to learn how

to carve your own initials into a stone, tutored by sculptor Peter Maris. Your very own stone will then be built into the maze itself. Or you can buy a stone with your initials carved into it, or those of friends or family, for a gift or to remember someone special for all time. Find out more at forestryengland.uk/dalbymaze

Volunteering Opportunities Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century residence set in the heart of the breathtaking landscape of North Yorkshire, close to the busy city of York and the market town of Malton. We are keen to grow our group of friendly and enthusiastic volunteers that help us ensure our visitors have an excellent experience whilst at Castle Howard. We have opportunities available throughout the week, both indoors and outdoors, sharing stories of our rich history and bringing to life the amazing collections we hold. Outdoors, volunteers are able to work alongside our Grounds team assisting with a variety of gardening tasks including rose dead-heading, hoeing, edging and weeding, tidying away the borders, clearing leaves and mulching. In return for your time we can offer you, free entry into the House and grounds, discounts in our outlets, reimbursement of travel expenses, full induction and training programme with ongoing support and a working environment alongside knowledgeable staff who are passionate about Castle Howard. This is a wonderful opportunity to work alongside people with similar interests, develop your knowledge of Castle Howard’s long history and contribute to the preservation and conservation for future generations to enjoy. No previous experience is required as training will be provided. If you are interested in being a part of our volunteer team, we would be keen to hear from you. WHAT’S ON AT HELMSLEY WALLED GARDEN by Tricia Harris, Manager at Helmsley Walled Garden

A

Your Local Hi Tech 3D Cinema

s April 1st approaches we are busily working, getting ready for opening. It’s been an interesting winter with snow, high winds and rain. I thought we might have to build an ark; the soil was so wet we couldn’t get on it for weeks. Everything is firming up nicely now and we’ve made a start on the hard landscaping of the new Alphabet Garden. We have a beautiful drystone wall thanks to Derek our drystone waller and his team of trusty volunteer helpers. We open officially on April 1st but the weekend of 30/31st March will be an open weekend. Entrance will be free and we will be encouraging residents of Helmsley to come down and buy their residents passes. We’ll also have a shop sale, so if you fancy a bargain, come and have a look around. Our Wildlife Weekend is on 6th and 7th of April when organisations such as RSPB and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will be here. Visitors can find out how these organisations are working to protect and promote the cause of our environment and how all of us can do simple things to help. There’ll be fun things for kids to get involved in and plenty of information to take away. Helmsley Walled Garden is a charity, funding its programme of therapeutic horticulture through visitor admissions. Every time you visit you are helping us support people with a range of mental ill health issues and for that we say a big thank you. Do come and see us soon for a leisurely day out.

SPOTLIGHT ON ST LEONARD’S

H

By Kathryn Craven

i Everyone, something a little bit different from me this month: a story from a St Leonard’s Hospice patient. Last month was Lymphoedema Awareness Week. Here at St Leonard’s we are proud to offer a Lymphoedema Clinic to cancer patients. Frank Hayward from Ryedale has benefitted from the service and it’s my privilege to share his story with you. Frank’s Story... They say “you never know what’s around the corner” and in my case how true that statement was. Having reached 68 years of age in 2017 I considered myself to be fit and active. In fact, at the end of June that year I walked Wainwright’s ‘Coast to Coast’ in 14 days of continuous walking. Then the bombshell: in July 2017 I was diagnosed with a High Grade, Stage 2, soft tissue sarcoma in my left leg. The sarcoma was removed in September 2017 and the operation included some re-construction surgery to my leg. Once the leg had healed sufficiently I underwent 32 sessions of radiotherapy over a 6-week period travelling more than 3000 miles for my daily sessions in Leeds. The end result was that I had gone from a “Coast to Coaster” to someone who struggled to reach the post box some

200 metres from my home using 2 elbow crutches. Several weeks of physiotherapy coupled with the healing process and I was free of crutches. As a consequence of my surgery the lymph networks that carry fluid around the body had been cut resulting in swelling in my leg. My consultant suggested a Lymphoedema Clinic might be able to help and he referred me to the Sunflower Centre at St Leonard’s Hospice. St Leonard’s Hospice is an oasis of calm set in beautiful gardens. The atmosphere within the building immediately puts you at ease. My specialist Lymphoedema nurse, Julie Shepard, is very friendly, welcoming and supportive. Julie creates the time to fully explain your condition, offers advice on the options available to you, and at all times is caring and allows you to express your views and concerns. I have nothing but praise for the staff at St Leonard’s.

TO THE TAX MAN I BEQUEATH...

S

By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at PenLife Associates

o, in theory Inheritance Tax (IHT) attempts to spread wealth ‘fairly’basically stopping the rich from getting richer. Some people believe that state money benefits everyone. But we know the UK Government wastes hundreds of billions per year. Which means more and more people are deciding they want control over who benefits from their money when they die. The current IHT allowance is a meagre £325,000. If you’re worth less than this when you die, then Inheritance Tax should not be a problem for you. But anything over this limit is taxed at 40%, which isn’t far off half. You’re likely to have paid tax throughout your life. Who would let the Government take another 40% of it when you die? Yet the Tax Man collects over £6 billion in this unfair tax every year. And yes, from 2021 an extra £175,000 allowance could be available for those who are leaving their main residence to direct descendants. But – as we predicted - house price increases are simply swallowing up this additional allowance. People who have accumulated wealth have

usually done so through hard work and making smart investment decisions. What they don’t realise is that could all be for nothing if the Tax Man benefits from it rather than their family. We are often involved – sometimes too late – in cases where the Tax Man stands to get a much bigger legacy than the family. That just can’t be right. The Government is quite happy to waste your money on failing schemes, false promises and benefitting people who haven’t worked half as hard as you. Inheritance Tax is in effect a voluntary tax. There are many simple actions to avoid it or soften the blow. Which means your family won’t lose out. What bothers me most is that Inheritance Tax is attacking more and more ordinary hard working families. Which is why I do everything in my power to protect my clients’ money. If you want to join hundreds of our clients who’ve decided their family, not the tax man, should inherit their money, call us now for a friendly no-obligation chat with one of our Inheritance Tax specialists.

VIBRANT SEASON

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

By The Pastoral Poet

Spring! Bold carefree libertine. Swaggering; Hale and hearty. Toasting the end of Winter’s dull party, Clothing all in motley green. Miscreant March flounders on an ebb tide, Leaving the touch of icy fingers, And though a hoary breath still lingers, April has arrived with a sure footed stride. All are risen from Winter’s black hours, Woken, not by the crowing cock, But by some inner silent clock. Or perchance the warmth of vernal showers. Pendulous catkins tremble on leafless trees, Smothering the air with yellow dust. Hopeful promise cast by each gust, Their fate entrusted to the breeze. The lordly pheasant with haughty mien goes, Planting each measured stride with aplomb. Beats his coppery wings like a drum, And with raucous challenge crows. Swallows in collective hordes, Make graceful wing in open skies, And with kindred spirit fraternise, Over England’s rolling sward. What limitless joy Spring imparts! Long after the hearty popping of corks Have extolled the yield of Autumn’s slain stalks. Now something more poignant is etched upon our hearts. Clive Milson

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH?

I

’m sure we all think that we do, but how do we know we’re getting them really clean. If you notice tartar and stains building on your teeth between appointments you probably aren’t doing quite as good a job as you might think. by Christine Parker Were you shown by your parents, BDS (GDC 72136) the TV or do you just wing it and hope that you’re doing a good job? Gum disease can start in your twenties or even earlier. You might never notice you have a problem until your teeth loosen or the gums become tender or start to bleed. Gum disease can increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes and other chronic health conditions. Your dentist can point out the areas you might not be brushing so well, they can often tell if you are right or left handed by the pattern of brushing! They can show you how to really get into missed areas to stop the progress of any gum problems. Frequently forgotten is cleaning the spaces between the teeth, these can be areas of food and plaque stagnation and are rarely accessed by brushing alone, even with an electric brush. Modern interdental sticks are quick and easy to use and your dentist can advise you of the best size. Using them regularly means you’ll need less scaling and potentially fewer fillings. In an age where a clean, white, healthy smile is becoming more and more desirable, a professional demonstration of good brushing tailored to you is an essential skill. pring is truly upon us and we are starting to enjoy getting out and about more. Calluses and corns on feet can be painful conditions that can prevent us from enjoying our beloved Yorkshire. But what causes them and how can we try to prevent them and if needed, treat them? Calluses are areas of thickened skin that are tougher than normal skin and yellow in colour. Corns are generally smaller areas of circular, thick, hard skin. Neither calluses or corns have ‘roots’ as many people believe. They develop in response to pressure, usually from footwear, over a prominent area of the foot such as a clawing toe or in relation to the way your foot moves when you are involved in an activity such as walking or running. They can develop anywhere that there is pressure on the foot. Common areas are the tops and ends of toes, between the toes, over bunions and the soles of the feet. There are a number of things you can do to try to prevent calluses and corns. Wearing footwear that fits your feet is probably the most important. They are caused by pressure, so preventing the pressure from poorly fitting footwear should prevent the development of calluses and corns. Keeping your skin in good condition by washing and drying thoroughly and applying a moisturiser is also important, being careful to dry between the toes and avoid applying cream there. Leaving calluses and corns untreated can lead to more discomfort and pain. A Podiatrist registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) can remove the callus and corn without discomfort and can advise on footwear and ways to avoid pressure in those areas to try to prevent recurrence in future.

Easter eggs are very tempting... by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

...but did you know that they are poisonous to dogs & other animals? Chocolate Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is poisonous to dogs and other animals. Generally speaking, the darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains, and therefore the more poisonous it is. White chocolate contains very little theobromine and although it is unlikely to cause theobromine poisoning, it is still very fatty and can make your dog poorly. Chocolate poisoning can initially cause vomiting and diarrhoea, but may also lead to excitability, twitching, tremors, fitting and life threatening problems with the heart. Each year, we see dogs with chocolate poisoning increase dramatically around Christmas and Easter. During these periods take extra care to ensure that all chocolate is kept out of the reach of your dog. Although chocolate wrappers are not poisonous, they can cause an obstruction if eaten. This can be very dangerous and may require surgery to remove. Signs of an obstruction may include vomiting, lethargy, off food, not defecating or struggling to defecate. There are many other foods that can be dangerous to dogs some of which include; Mouldy foods - Contain many toxins and can cause illness sometimes causing Muscle tremors and seizures Onions - Garlic, Leeks & shallots belong to the Allium family. These contain a substance which can damage red blood cells and can cause life threatening anemia. Macadamia nuts - Can cause weakness, lethargy, unsteadiness, vomiting, tremors & high temperature Raisins - Grapes, raisins, currents & sultanas are all toxic more so in dried forms can cause kidney failure Sweets & sugar - After eating lots of sugar or fats pancreatitis can develop (inflammation of the pancreas) sometimes resulting in organ failure Xylitol - is an artificial sweetener used in foods & also in chewing gum. Causes a healthy dogs blood sugar levels to dangerously drop with larger amounts causing liver failure ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE 74 | Handy Mag | April 2019

Alcohol - Dogs are more sensitive to ethanol a small amount can cause effects, drowsiness, wobbly, in severe cases develop a low body temperature, low blood sugar, seizures and coma Bones - When cooked, all bones become brittle and can easily splinter. Larger pieces of bone can cause an obstruction, whilst smaller pieces may irritate the gut or even damage the stomach or intestinal wall requiring surgery. If you suspect that your pet has been poisoned, or has come into contact with potentially poisonous substances, please contact your veterinary practice immediately.

um took me into the room where bad things happen, I try to avoid going to that part of the building at all costs but when she picks me up and carries me, I can’t do anything about it. This time Tarka’s mum Catriona was in there as well, she had a box full of spikey things and they asked me to sit on the table while Catriona decorated my back with the spikey things. I thought it was going to hurt as usually spikey things mean injections, but I didn’t even notice them going in! After I had been decorated, I saw Catriona moving and turning some of the spikey things which made me feel a bit tingly and made some of my muscles twitch but mummy said I was being a good boy so I sat as still as I could and stared at her until they had finished. For the rest of the day I felt so sleepy and relaxed, I didn’t even feel like going for a walk! What a strange day! Mum said that she hopes my elbow won’t be hurting as much now, I have had a bit of trouble with it recently so maybe this spikey stuff will help. Jasper.

Kirkbymoorside is about to get a new improved, slightly larger Co-op. This is a great opportunity. If the people in the town take an interest and contact the Co-op, we could lobby for a really sustainable local store. We have a climate crisis. Current food production and distribution is a huge contributor to climate change. We swap goods unnecessarily, all over the world, like for like, merely to increase trade. But the transport of those goods and the effect on the environment in other countries is a big problem. For example, salads produced in southern Spain amount to the export of an enormous amount of water from an already dry region; in addition to poor working conditions and frightening amounts of plastic ending up in the Mediterranean. Our demand for out of season goods is to blame. The Co-op already does a lot, in terms of fair trade, anti-slavery, energy production, and buying British. However, they could do more, with community support. This new Co-op could become a flagship of best practice, with a sustainable building, housing more local produce and further encouraging the local food economy. A shop with less plastic packaging, involving less transport. One that offers ways to market for small producers, encouraging start-ups. A shop with more opportunities for recycling, and more community involvement. This will only happen if local people contact the supermarkets to get the discussion going. Let’s start the conversation by initiating a meeting with them.

Contact June Emerson at Kirkbymoorside Environment Group on kmegadmin@ phonecoop.coop to find out how you can participate.
