W
elcome to the August/ September edition.
This month I’m celebrating 9 years in publishing. This seems hard to believe when I think back to that first day asking people to believe in me and this wannabe magazine. I still struggle to believe I managed to start the magazines with no direct experience, little money and mostly no idea what I was doing! With very gratefully received help from family, friends and other businesses, the Handy Mag is going strong and 2014 has so far been one of the busiest yet.

This year, being based in the centre of Malton, I’m really enjoying meeting so many more local businesses, community groups and readers. To have people popping in off the street and into the office to chat about their interests really helps. We love hearing about what’s going on, both with our local businesses and our communities. Keep those local events and community groups and charities coming! For local businesses we now deliver our two magazines (Ryedale and York Villages) to a total of 49,300 letterboxes. That is putting your business in front of 49,300 potential customers for less than the cost of a daily cappuccino! It’s got to be worth it! At the time of writing, we are at the end of another school year. Next year will be the last one for my eldest and I’m trying not to think about her leaving home for the big wide world. When they were small I was wishing they were more independent, now I’m sort of wishing they were small again…but maybe not! Congratulations to Ryedale Folk Museum who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this month. It puts my 9 years to shame! Until next month…

Malton Stables Open Day 2014 Sunday 31st August 2014
L
ocal racehorse trainers are once again throwing open their doors to the public at this year’s Malton Stables Open Day which takes place on Sunday 31st August. The event is now in its third year since being rekindled in 2012 and attracts thousands of visitors to the area from across the country. People will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a racing yard and meet the equine athletes and those who take care of them. Many yards will also be holding demonstrations and popular natural horsemanship trainer Gary Witheford will once again be in attendance at Tim Etherington’s yard. Twenty local yards will be open to the public between 9am to 1pm, and there will be a free park and ride system operating around all of the yards in Malton and Norton. In addition the outlying yards will all provide free parking for visitors that will be clearly signposted on the day.
Back by popular demand is the Celebrity Question and Answer session which will feature a panel of national and local racing celebrities. The afternoon event will also include a fun quiz to test the experts racing knowledge! This will take place in The Milton Rooms in Malton during the afternoon alongside activities for children and a number of trade stalls and refreshments in the Market Place. The Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare will also have exhibitions here and they will be showing the progress of Jack Berry House currently being built in Old Malton and the new Racing Welfare Centre in the centre of Malton.
BETFAIR MALTON STABLES SPRINT AT BEVERLEY RACECOURSE…
This year in the lead up to the event, local trainers decided that they wanted to give some of their hard working stable staff the opportunity to have their moment of glory, so have teamed up with Beverley Racecourse and event sponsors, Betfair to run the Malton Stables Sprint. The race is for stable staff working in local yards who have never ridden in a race and will take place a week before the Open Day. Each of the riders has pledged to raise £500 for the Open Day’s nominated charities, so if you would like to support our local amateur jockeys then come along to Beverley Races on 24th August to cheer them on!

E
ast Coast Slimmers have joined together to springclean their wardrobes and donate their clothes to Cancer Research UK in support of the national fundraising campaign ‘The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. Members of Scarborough and Pickering Slimming World groups collected all their unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories to donate to their local Cancer Research UK shop to support the campaign in two weeks of May. Four local Consultants recently delivered 148 bags collected and discovered the items could potentially raise around £4,440 for the charity over the coming months. Last year slimmers donated £888,586 worth of stock across the UK. Amanda Taylor said “Our members jumped at the chance to recycle the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to help raise money.” Linda Welch commented that “Members of our Slimming World

in Whitby, said: “We welcome clothes and items of all shapes, sizes and styles and were absolutely thrilled to receive such a huge donation of clothing from the East Coast Slimming World groups, for the second year running. It makes a real difference to our fundraising efforts and it’s good to raise awareness that being overweight increases cancer risk too.” To find out more about joining Slimming World view www. slimmingworld.com or about Cancer Research UK’s work and ways to support view www.cancerresearchuk.org
New Consultants and Groups There are 2 new local Slimming World consultants to help you. Phoebe Court will be relaunching the group at Pickering Library on Wednesdays at 5pm and 7pm. Phoebe says “With my 30th birthday fast approaching I was determined not to be fat at thirty. I joined Slimming World on New Year’s Day and have so far lost nearly six stone! Food Optimising works for everybody & nothing is banned which means you will never feel hungry, deprived and ‘on a diet’. To me, D.I.E.T means ‘Dare I Eat That’ and with Slimming World, YES YOU CAN! Come along to our fun & friendly group and let me show you how you can eat your favourite meals and still lose weight”” Linda Bowskill is starting a new group at Malton Secondary School on Thursdays at 7pm. Solicitor Linda Bowskill has decided to change careers and become a consultant after her experience attending a local Slimming World club. Linda put on weight when pregnant with her two children and then went back to work full time. Linda said “My problem was juggling the regular work lunches and meals out. I would return from work and then have the family to sort out and just didn’t seem to find time to plan properly and I would end up grabbing something quick to eat just because I was hungry. Inevitably it would be an unhealthy choice”. Attending Slimming World changed all this for Linda. Enjoy the support and friendship of Slimming World groups and lose weight together. Lesley Salisbury, who is a qualified psychiatric nurse with three decades’ experience, understands the challenges of being a carer while holding down a job and perhaps raising a family too.
“First of all I like to introduce myself to the client and their immediate family or carers and assess their individual personal requirements as these will differ from family to family. These needs can range from help with all daily living to taking the client too hospital appointments on social trips or visits even to help if they have any pets.”
“Many of us have used care services, most of which are pushed to the absolute limit,” said Lesley, whose client list stretches throughout the Ryedale and Yorkshire Coast region. “While these services can be of great help, I am offering something very

Top Tips from a dental professional
Orthodontics (Part 2) When and where is the best time for your child to have an orthodontic assessment? This is a very contentious by Christine Parker subject amongst general BDS (GDC 72136) dentists, parents and orthodontists, most parents would like their child attended to as soon as possible, especially if they are being teased about their smile. About 20 years ago there was process called ’serial extraction’ where the child had several visits to the dentist and as the teeth became crowded they were removed. In reality this did little to improve the final outcome of treatment for the poor child as it was found to encourage the early eruption of the new teeth and thus compound the problem. This however may be the experience of many parents who now have young children themselves so they expect a similar process for their child. Today there is a trend to try to avoid extraction and wait and see how much space nature is going to provide. As dentists we are supposed to refer when the child has lost all of their baby teeth as the orthodontists book becomes jammed with patient who are too young to treat otherwise. Sometimes where it is glaringly obvious that there is never going to be enough room an earlier referral may be made. Patient may also seek a consultation on a private basis. NHS (free) orthodontics is only available to those children with more serious need where there is a functional problem or where the child has impacted, missing or extra teeth. Where your child has a slightly twisted front tooth or irregularity they are unlikely to be seen as appropriate for NHS treatment. Your own dentist should be able to score them against an International Index of need and give you an idea if they will need to be seen privately or by the NHS. Again treatment is rarely provided if the brushing is poor or there is a recent history of decay.

“Whatever Happened to Good Old Fashioned Values?”
S
ome say “old-fashioned” is a bad thing - do you remember a time when we had pride and patriotism for our country, a sense of responsibility that came from a generation that accepted responsibility...a simpler life. I’ve lived in the past, and the values and principles of the past don’t seem to be respected anymore. We seem to have moved into a whole new era of different attitudes and standards. What happened to integrity, courtesy, honesty and our core values; the sense of respect for others? Are we isolating ourselves to the point we don’t know, and more importantly care, about our neighbours? Don’t get me wrong I’m not implying we should go back to the old days. I have come to rely on the modern things of today like computers, mobiles and microwaves...
...but I’m a human being and want to be treated like one; I am a person and not some inert unit. I have feelings too! Having such old fashioned values is something that is just part of me. If you are fed up with comments about your hearing and tired of asking people to repeat themselves and would like some help please call me anytime: David Mason RHAD

LOCAL PEOPLE STEPPING UP COUNCILLOR LINDA COWLING Leader of Ryedale District Council says… If you are keen to ensure that your local council delivers good, efficient services to local people , then you couldn’t do better than apply to be a district councillor. I have been a district councillor for 23 years now. Sometimes the work is frustrating but a lot of the time, it is extremely rewarding and you can make a difference! When people have a problem you are in a position to help them, even if it is only with informed advice.
Being part of a group is beneficial as you have other people to work with and help you make decisions. The time commitment does not have to be huge, but it needs to be consistent. I think that the worst thing that can happen to a council is that no one group is in control – this was the case at Ryedale District Council for many years – then it seems that no decisions get made at all! There are many different aspects to the work – planning, leisure services, housing, finance to name a few and people with appropriate skills are always needed to represent the people of Ryedale Why not get in touch with us and find out what it is all about?
COUNCILLOR LUKE IVES Chairman of Ryedale District Council Luke has represented Norton West Ward since 2011. At the age of just 19, he became one of the youngest councillors in the country. One of Luke’s motivations for standing was to confront the negative prejudices of younger people often portrayed in the media, and to give them a say in local democracy. Having been born in Norton, Luke knows the area well and has worked to support many local residents with the issues that concern them. For example, he has been heavily involved in a community campaign against a proposed asphalt plant at Whitewall Quarry. 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Luke attended Norton College until 2010, and currently works for a local business in Malton town centre, whilst studying a higher level apprenticeship in accountancy. In May this year Luke was appointed Chairman of Council, and became the youngest ever civic head of a local authority in history - an accolade that even won plaudits from the Prime Minister. Luke’s theme for his year in office is a “year of youth”, and he has made it a key aim to increase engagement in politics among younger people. Luke commented: “I hope that my election shows that anyone with enough determination can stand for election - regardless of age or background.”

COULD YOU BE PART OF A WINNING TEAM? Are there things about your community you would like to improve? Do you believe local people should decide what is best for them? Would you stand up for your neighbours if they needed help? Have you ever considered standing as a Conservative Candidate? Conservative councillors and candidates are already working hard across the area, helping their neighbours and improving their communities. We think that’s worth standing for. If you agree we’d like to hear from you. You won’t have to give up your job or surrender your social life, and you will receive all the support you need to be a fantastic local councillor. If you would like more information on standing as a local council candidate and how you could help to make a difference in our area, please contact us, on 01653-693502 or info@thirskandmaltonconservatives.com

GETTING RYEDALE RESIDENTS OUT AND ABOUT AGAIN HELP US TO HELP OUR RESIDENTS Ryedale Community Transport is looking to expand the team of volunteer drivers to meet the extra demand. Hours are extremely flexible, allowing drivers to offer as much or as little time as they have available, at a time that suits them. Many drivers stay with us for many years, due to the enjoyment and satisfaction they find through helping others. “Our volunteers find that driving is an ideal way to do something really useful for their community and to meet new people in their area” says John. As local public transport services diminish, Ryedale Community Transport aims to help Ryedale residents who cannot easily use public transport. For some, routes to their desired destination are simply not available, some have difficulty getting onto public transport, others might have poor mobility or simply lack the confidence to get out on their own. The result can be a loss of independence, isolation and a poorer standard of living.
WHAT WE DO Ryedale Community Transport is a not-for-profit, voluntary organisation that has existed since 1988 and is dedicated to helping people to retain their independence and ability to travel. Backed by an award of £250,000 of lottery funding, Ryedale Community Transport is now able to offer a greater range of journeys in the area, to medical appointments, shopping, family visits and social occasions. Volunteer drivers use their own cars or one of the organisation’s mini-buses to collect people from their door, take them directly to their destination and bring them home again. There is no charge for the volunteers’ time but users are asked to cover mileage costs. Some of the lottery funding has been spent on specially adapted Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles which can carry chair-bound residents and a companion more easily and comfortably. • Our Car Scheme is exclusively operated by volunteer drivers. • Ring and Ride provides a local door-to-door transport service
• We also have mini buses for group travel. • We also run the Wheels2Work moped hire scheme, to help people to get to work
Leaflets are available in surgeries and libraries in the area and anyone who would like to know more about volunteering or about using the service should call 01653 699059.

37 LEGAL WAYS TO SLASH £THOUSANDS OFF YOUR INHERITANCE TAX BILL Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
O
n the council estate where I come from, most families took benefits rather than work. But my mum worked her backside off all her life for me and my four siblings. When I left school, I bagged a job at an accountancy practice in York. There, I learned about investment and tax planning. The more I learned, the more amazed I became that people would willingly pay huge sums of Inheritance Tax (IHT) when there are plenty of legal simple ways to
stop the Tax Man getting his hands on it! There are a few reasons you’ll allow the tax man to literally steal your savings from under your nose when you die. You might believe you’re immortal. You might think you’re going to take it with you. You might bury your head in the sand. You might believe the Government led media frenzy that tax planning is somehow wrong. Yet IHT planning is no more sinister than putting your money in an ISA to save Income and Capital Gains Tax. Fortunately for the Tax Man, all of these excuses mean he’ll collect over £3 billion of this unfair tax this year alone. I’m passionate about saving IHT for ordinary hardworking families. My team and I have saved literally millions of pounds in IHT for our clients and their families. If Inheritance Tax worries you, why not contact us for a free no-nonsense chat. Or get my guide “37 Legal Ways To Slash Thousands Of Pounds Off Your IHT Bill” - details below.

MOTORING Audi Q5
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk
@carwriteups
FAST FACTS
• Max speed: 138mph • 0-62 mph: 7.1 secs • Combined mpg: 35.8 • Engine: 1984cc 4 cylinder 16 valve diesel • Max. power (bhp): 222 at 4500 rpm • Max. torque (Ib/ft): 258 at 1500 rpm • CO2: 184 g/km • Price: £35,350 on the road
I
f I had over £35,000 I would happily buy the 2.0 TFSI quattro S line version of the Audi Q5.
You see, the styling of the Q5, with its coupe-like roof line and wrap-around tailgate, has been subtly refreshed. The design of the headlights has been changed, and the sparkling xenon units are now framed by new-look LED daytime running lights that form a continuous band surrounding more of the lens. Inside, the Audi Q5 is pure understated refinement. The controls are trimmed in chrome, and the narrow panels of the centre console are finished in high-gloss black. The hi-tech central media component, MMI navigation plus, has very few buttons, so you don’t need a degree in Rocket Science to work out how to use it. Other touches such as heated seats, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel make the Q5 a dream to drive. The car is as solidly made as an oak table and yet seems as light as a feather. There’s a reason for this: the bonnet and tailgate are crafted from aluminium, while the car’s structural elements integrate ultrahigh-strength steels; they reduce weight and improve crash safety. The result is that the Q5 handles like an executive saloon and takes off like a bat out of hell when you dab the accelerator. Indeed, the performance totally matches the looks of this Germanic road warrior: top speed is 138mph and the 0-62mph sprint is done in a satisfying 7.1 seconds. Another explanation for this awesome performance is the updated Q5’s TFSI petrol engine, which combines direct fuel injection, while the eight-speed tiptronic automatic powers the 2.0 TFSI Quattro up the cogs effortlessly. The chassis of the latest Audi Q5 also adds a great dollop of refinement and comfort, thanks

to changes to the spring, shock absorber and anti-roll bar settings. The new power steering system gives you a better feel for the road too. The Q5 driving experience is further enhanced when the optional Audi drive select system is specified. Audi drive select lets you vary the operating characteristics of the throttle pedal, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the degree of power steering assistance and the operation of the automatic air conditioning system via four modes, including an efficiency mode. In addition, three optional components can also be controlled by the Audi drive select system if they are fitted. These include adaptive cruise control, damper control and dynamic steering. During higher speed cornering, it compensates for understeer and oversteer by intervening with slight steering pulses. I’m not saying you’ll ever get sick of driving the Q5, but when you’ve had enough of all that commuting to work and driving the kids to school malarkey, the Audi will thrill you off road. It may look a bit bling but it actually performs well on rugged terrain. Its maximum climbing angle is 31 degrees and its approach and departure angles are each 25 degrees. And you won’t rip anything off the Q5’s underbelly because the vehicle’s ground clearance measures 20 cm. This is truly a motor for everyone – but you’ll have to have a decent bank balance, or a boss who’s nice enough to put this on the company car list to drive one. DOGS OF THE MONTH - POPPET As the name suggests this young lady is a real sweetie. She is about 12 months old and a happy, friendly bundle of fun. She loves human company and appears fine around other dogs. Poppet loves her treats and food so reward based training would be the way to go to help her become a welcome member of the family.
To find out more about Poppet and any of the dogs that we currently have for adoption please call Rosie on 07581 324153.

My colleague, Edmund, suggested a sheep as a stable companion, to whom he has become devoted. He grooms the sheep and they share a haynet. It has all worked perfectly and he has become a new horse!

was doing a call yesterday and listening to Radio 4 – as you do if the kids are not in the car! Some poor chap was undergoing an endoscopy of his gullet live on the radio.
A short video of them can be found on our facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/ stationhousevets If you have worries concerning your own horses do not hesitate to contact your vet. The procedure is simple and unlike the poor radio 4 presenter, horses have no gag reflex and are sedated prior to examination!
It quite put me off my pork scratchings..It is a procedure we carry out regularly on horses to examine the lining of their stomach as they can suffer terribly with a condition called gastric ulceration. The scoping is a necessary part of diagnosis as the signs can be difficult to spot. Some horses go off their feed, some resent being tacked up, or buck more. Some grind their teeth or become evil in temperament. All suffer as a result with poor performance. Stress is an important triggering factor. Travelling, competing and training are significant causes, but feeding patterns are often implicated. Once the ulcers have been cured with medicines, then increasing the horse’s grazing and roughage is really important. One delightful patient we scoped recently had obvious gastric ulcers and his treatment was hampered because he was not eating due to his stress levels. He had been a late developer, was not broken in until he was six years old and had run as part of a

MICROCHIPPING YOUR DOG
Did you know that the law is changing? Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
“Microchipping provides the security of knowing that should your dog stray the chances of being reunited significantly increases”
B
y April 2016 it will be a legal obligation for ALL dogs to be microchipped.
Microchipping provides the security of knowing that should your dog stray the chances of being reunited significantly increases, whilst every dog owner is legally obliged to ensure that their dog is wearing a collar and tag, these can easily get lost or be removed. A microchip is permanent. A microchip is a small electronic device the size of a grain of rice which is coded with a unique number that can be read by a scanner. This unique number is entered and stored on the national database alongside the owners details. Using a specially designed implanting device, the microchip is injected through a sterile needle under the dogs skin between the shoulder blades. This procedure shouldn’t cause anymore discomfort than a standard vaccination. Veterinary practices, Local Authorities and some Animal Welfare groups have scanners, they will scan any dog found straying and if found to have a microchip will contact the national 24 hour database to find the owners details. The owner can then be contacted and reunited with their dog.
52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Remember Microchipping is a great way to identify your dog but you can only be reunited with a missing pet if your details are up to date. If you move house or change your telephone number please amend your details with the chip database as soon as possible. Here at Battle Flatts we have joined the Dog’s Trust’s Microchipping Campaign were you can have your dogs microchipped for free in view of the forthcoming legislation, this campaign is aiming to get as many dogs chipped as possible before the legislation comes into force. If you would like to have your dog microchipped please contact your local branch to make an appointment, alternatively come along to our Family Charity Fun Day! Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic are holding a Family Charity Fun Day at the surgery in Stamford Bridge on Saturday 13th September 1pm – 4pm, look around the surgery, bouncy castle, cream teas, tombola, local charities will have stalls, veterinary reps and more…. We will also be offering the chance to have your dog chipped. The free chipping is funded through the Dogs Trust charity so you may wish to make a donation. LOOKING FOR 3 SPECIAL HOMES FOR 3 SPECIAL DOGS It is called The Black Dog Syndrome and it looks as though Y.C.D.R are suffering from it at the moment. Statistically black dogs are harder to rehome, why we don’t know but we have three gorgeous dogs waiting their forever homes and have had very few enquiries about them. BEX - our gorgeous Lab/Staffie cross is a friendly happy 8 year old. She has lived with young children and loves family life. She has only been walked in parks etc where dogs have to be kept on the lead so she hasn’t had a lot of socialisation off lead but seems to like most dogs she meets on her walks. She would need training before being allowed off lead. KYE - 7 year old Lab/Springer Kye is a sweetheart, he was recently rehomed to a family with children and they absolutely adored him. He was great with the kids, loved his walks, was great with other dog but he is nervous of men and took a good few weeks to bond with the man of the house, he just wouldn’t come near him without treats etc.
Unfortunately he was returned to us as he barks if left and although the family were home most of the time he was left a couple of hours a day. He needs a home where he won’t be left. Our volunteer John MacKenzie of Alpha Assist is happy to come and help Kye settle in his new home. LYCON - 4 year old Lurcher. If being big, bouncy, full of fun and energy is a problem then this is Lycon’s problem. He is a really gorgeous boy who adores people and loves his walks. He doesn’t need to go for miles just regular walks like any other dog and a regular routine will see Lycon happy and settled. If you can offer a loving home to any of our dogs please contact us on 0758 3269614 or email ycdogrescue@btinternet.com

The Ryedale Town and Country Trails project is looking at the possibilities for increasing the number of car-free and wheelchair accessible trails. Various suggestions have already been made about existing paths that could be upgraded or new routes that could be agreed. Do you have an interest in this? Perhaps you have an idea of a route to benefit your village or town? Local support is needed for every bit of every route. It makes sense to look at what carfree routes are needed to link up communities and facilities across the whole of Ryedale, because we want to be “shovel ready” if regional Government funding comes along. Anyone interested will be welcome at a meeting to be held at Pickering Memorial Hall, 7.30 on Tuesday 30th September. 3 ESSENTIAL FOUNDATIONS THAT GARDENS LACK Having designed and planted small to medium sized gardens for the past 17 years, I have found that the ones that are the most beautiful and pleasurable to be in are those that are based on an equal combination of what I call the 3 Essential Foundations and it’s never too late to look at them again.

oes the thought of your garden fill you with guilt as the weeds grow bigger and bigger? Chances are your garden is not based on the 3 Essential Foundations or one or more are out of balance.
Or do you want to change something in the garden but don’t know where to start? Then the 3 Essential Foundations will be vital in helping you create the most relevant and best possible starting point for your new garden.
SuDS PERMEABLE PAVING
The first one is to ‘Know what you want’. Work out exactly what you’d like to do in the garden and what you must have to make it work on a practical front. The way to do this is to sit down and take a few minutes to really think about what you like doing outside. For example, many people like to eat outside, to entertain or just to relax at the

end of the day with a glass of wine – and I expect that you will too. Make a list and consult the others who use the garden too. The second is to ‘Know your garden’. Work out what the physical growing conditions in your garden and work with nature rather than against it. Essential characteristics to look for are the soil type, the soil pH (acidic, neutral or alkaline), where the sunny and shady spots are, is it sheltered or exposed and how much annual rain fall your garden gets. All these things will dictate the types of plants you can grow successfully and which part of the garden they will do best in. It is much easier to look after the right plant in the right place. The third is to ‘Know how much time you’re REALISTICALLY prepared to give to looking after the garden’. Once you

Err on the side of caution rather than enthusiasm because it is much better for the soul to look at one or two areas that look beautiful and feel right rather than the whole garden being a burden. The answers to these 3 questions will guide and direct the design that emerges and will dictate how much maintenance you will have to do in the future. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

FAITH OR FEAR?
Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church They called him the Great Blondin, because of his legendary bright blue eyes and flowing blond hair, but his real name was Jean François Gravelet. Born in 1824, Blondin became known as the ‘wonder child’ because of his remarkable grace and skill as an acrobat and tightrope walker. In 1859, in front of an audience of thousands, Blondin walked a tightrope for the first time across the Niagara Gorge without a safety net or harness. The rope was approximately 335m long, 8 cm thick and 50m above the water. Each time Blondin crossed he would dazzle crowds with increasingly dangerous stunts including walking blindfolded, on stilts and even stopping half way to cook an egg! In 1860 a royal party, including the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, and the Duke of Newcastle attended one of Blondin’s performances. After trundling a wheelbarrow across the tightrope, Blondin approached the royal party and asked, ‘Do you believe I can carry a man in my wheelbarrow across the Niagara Gorge’. ‘Yes’ they replied enthusiastically. Blondin continued, ‘Would you like to step in?’ Slightly embarrassed, neither the Prince of Wales nor the Duke of Newcastle accepted his invitation. Blondin turned to the crowd and asked if anyone would trust him enough to step in to the wheelbarrow. The crowd was silent until a little old lady stepped forward and got in. To the amazement of the crowd, Blondin pushed her across the tightrope in the wheelbarrow and only on his return did he reveal she was his mother. Only Blondin’s mother had the courage of her convictions. Not only did she believe, but she was willing to put her life in the hands of her son and trust him to get her safely to the other side. Belief and faith are very different. It is relatively easy to form an opinion or hold a belief but do we have the courage of our convictions when they are put to the test? It was fear that stopped any member of the Royal party from getting into the wheelbarrow and fear is often what stops us taking steps in the adventure of life. Faith is confidence to put our belief into action, even when doubts surface, we have an assurance and courage that overcomes our fear enabling us to take that next step. Take courage today; put belief into action, live by faith not in fear. 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ELLA... ON BUILDING A YURT Having finished all schooling forever, the idea of having zero obligations is strangely foreign. Hours that could once be filled with endless revision now have no purpose. My desk is empty (most of its contents have been ceremonially burned). So, to fix the problem of ultimate freedom, a Project has been set. We, (myself, my siblings and friends) are building a yurt, purely for lack of anything better to do. A yurt is a tee-pee like structure, made out of a wooden frame and covered in tough canvas, a bit like a tent, although bigger and sturdier. Originally, they were built by nomads who lived on the steppes of central Asia, particularly Mongolia. The whole structure can be broken down and transported quite easily - however I suspect our yurt won’t get much further than a festival maybe. It probably won’t be transported on horseback either, but otherwise we’re planning to get as traditional as possible. I’ve even learnt the Mongolian words for all the different sections. Considering that we are essentially a group of teenage novices, research had to involve a little more than simply typing “how to build a yurt” into google. But not a lot more – it’s amazing what you can find online. Armed with the internet, a couple of books, and several friendscome-unpaid volunteers, work is underway. Mum has already begun planning the interior decorations. I doubt it will end up a thing of great beauty or precise craftsmanship, but that’s not really the point. We’ll probably make a bunch of mistakes and make things difficult for ourselves and get it wrong, but if we’d wanted something made with expertise, we could have paid an expert. What it is, is something to focus on. Progressing with something little by little means that at the end of the day, you have something to show for it. It means waking up before noon, going outside and gaining skills and doing exercise – preventing the gradual slip into becoming nocturnal, which so often befalls teenagers in summer. And it’s fun, which is arguably the most important thing. Ella 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
Northanger Abbey Val McDermid That’s not a typo in the title. This really is a version of Jane Austen’s classic novel, reworked by crime writer Val McDermid as part of The Austen Project, which aims to issue updated versions of all six Austen novels.
I approached this with some trepidation, being a huge fan of both authors, but never having considered them in the same sentence before. From the first page I was hooked. This is a marvelous mix of the familiar and the new. Austen’s heroine, Catherine Morland, is brought fully into the twenty-first century - now she prefers to be known as Cat, has a serious social media habit, and is enjoying the delights of the Edinburgh Festival. The original Catherine’s obsession with Gothic fiction, is translated into modern day Cat’s voracious consumption of vampire literature meaning that she is prone to see the supernatural lurking around every shadowy corner, particularly when she finds herself with her new friends the Tilneys at Northanger Abbey. McDermid’s prose sparkles, with cleverly observed dialogue and constant refreshing twists on Austen’s plot and characters. Boorish John Thorpe and his shallow sister Bella, seem to belong perfectly in the modern day - indeed, readers may feel that they have met them on a number of occasions. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I still wanted to stay up late and finish the book - just like Cat/Catherine with their gothic romances, and just like I did the first time I read Austen’s
The Invisible Man’s Socks Alex Shearer They should have known better....but it had been an educational school trip, and they had some free time, and there was really nothing else to do... So, Mr Ellis’s class (and Mr Ellis, and Miss Bingham, and Mrs Ormerod) find themselves in The Museum of Little Horrors, where, despite the warnings issued by the owner, they can’t resist touching the exhibits. You would too, if you were faced with the Bigfoot’s Big Foot. Or the Cyclops’ Cycle Clips. And especially the Tuft of the Werewolf’s Hair. However, when Michael Pensley realises that he can actually feel the Invisible Man’s Socks, it stops being so funny. And when the class return to school, and then go home, they begin to realise that perhaps those warnings were there for a reason. Alex Shearer treads the line carefully between the ghoulish and the absurd in this novel for 8 years and over, and there are plenty of laughs to keep the pages turning as the horrible consequences develop, just realistically enough to make you wonder...and perhaps to stop you touching when the signs tell you not to.
Northanger Abbey. I can’t think of a higher compliment. 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

BAG IT UP AND HELP SAVE LIVES ACROSS YORKSHIRE
Believe it or not, your old textiles, clothing, shoes and mobile phones can earn Yorkshire Air Ambulance some much needed funds! Working with recycling partners, BIU Group, YAA receive an agreed percentage of the sale of the recycled materials. Good quality items which can be reused are sold to second-hand clothing traders in the UK and worldwide. ‘End of life’ garments are recycled into industrial wipers and cloths, mattress filling, insulation and new fibres. Yorkshire Air Ambulance fly 7 days a week, 365 days a year with a highly skilled crew. It costs up to £9900 per day (£3.6m a year!) to keep both helicopters maintained and in the air. Whenever a patient is carried by YAA they will only be about 10 minutes from the nearest hospital and approximately 15 minutes from the most appropriate treatment centre to treat their specific injury. Receiving specialist treatment so soon after injury has proven to save lives.
Since the charity was set up in 2000, the YAA has carried an incredible 5,500 people across the Yorkshire region. A vast array of individuals have benefitted from the YAA, from premature babies to those involved in a road traffic accident. Help send Swinton Brass Band to Cheltenham!
F
or only the second time in the band’s history, Swinton is going to the Finals of the National Brass Band Championship. The band gained second place at the Darlington area contest playing “Spanish Impressions” by Alan Fernie. The finals will take place at Cheltenham Racecourse on Saturday 20th September. Getting through was a great achievement but has left the band with some major fundraising to do to raise the £5,000 or so that the trip to Cheltenham in September will require. As in the film “Brassed Off” they will be working hard over the next few months to ensure that the band has a chance to compete. They would be grateful for any help they can get and you can support them at Morrisons on 16th August. We wish them every success! CONCERTS AND EVENTS: Sun 24th Aug 2pm start Burnby Hall Gardens, 33 The Balk York, East Riding of Yorkshire YO42 2QF United Kingdom. RYEDALE • AUGUST 2014 • ISSUE 102 chance of them being heard, seen and caught! By taking some simple precautions, you can put yourself at less risk of becoming a victim of opportunist thieves and help us continue to cut shed burglaries in the area.
Sandi Clark (Crime & Disorder Officer RDC) and Gail Cook (Community Partnerships Officer RDC)
SHEDUCATION
S
afer Ryedale are urging Ryedale residents to get sheducated and take some simple steps to keep thieves at bay.
Officers are stepping up patrols in the area to deter and target thieves. However, they are also urging people to make sure their shed is secured, particularly if expensive items are being stored inside, garden tools can also be used to break into homes.
“Garden side gates should be locked as an intruder climbing over is more likely to be seen as suspicious than one that just opens the gate and walks in.” Inspector Andy Everitt said “Burglaries of sheds and out-buildings throughout Ryedale continue to be a problem. I urge owners to take shed security seriously by ensuring that nothing of value is stored in their sheds and that appropriate measures have been taken to deter thieves. Don’t let your shed become easy pickings for opportunistic thieves’. People can report any suspicious activity to police on 101 and in an emergency call 999.
Shed burglaries can be prevented by taking simple security measures such as using quality padlocks and replacing standard hinges with strap hinges secured by coach bolts or non-return screws. Shed alarms are inexpensive and can be effective – especially with external sounders. (All these security products are available from most DIY shops and online.) Garden side gates should be locked as an intruder climbing over is more likely to be seen as suspicious than one that just opens the gate and walks in. Security lighting is also a deterrent, and portable shed alarms can scare off intruders. Bikes in particular need additional security locks and chains within the garage or shed, as they are increasingly becoming the target for thieves. All property should also be security marked. Remember – most burglars want to be in and out as quick as possible, therefore, we need to make it hard as we can for them to get in and remove goods quickly. All of the above measures will frustrate and delay them – which increases the

Ryedale Folk Museum
celebrates its 50th birthday
T
his year sees the 50th birthday of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, BBC Two, comedian Harry Hill and of course Hutton le Hole’s celebrated Ryedale Folk Museum, which first opened its doors in 1964. Since its earliest days, the museum has been showing visitors how generations of ordinary people in the North York Moors have lived and worked. The museum was created by local residents with a real passion for their heritage, not least founding father Wilfred Crosland who, together with his sisters, used to live in the house and barn that form the entrance to today’s museum. As a local historian, Wilfred was fascinated by old farm implements and craft and trade tools, many of which were becoming obsolete as mechanisation spread and rural communications improved. He stored his collection in the barn – and on occasion, displayed it too – and as Wilfred’s interest in such things became more widely
known, local people donated ever more items. It’s one thing to collect ploughshares and pocket-knives but entire buildings? It turned out that others not only shared an enthusiasm for preserving the past, but also despaired at

A walk through the museum grounds brings to life the lives of ordinary people through the ages. You can experience over twenty heritage buildings, five acres of grounds, centuries of history, 40,000 objects, curios and antiques. The rescued buildings and their contents are a vivid window into the past, while volunteers – who are the heart and soul of the museum – share their skills and enthusiasm with visitors.
