W

elcome to the Aug/ Sep edition. August and September are full of equine events from the iconic Ebor Festival in York (19th – 22nd August) to Malton Stables Open Day (Sunday 13th September). With the recent opening of the Jack Berry House in Malton for injured jockeys, the importance and scale of the horse-interest in this region is remarkable. Horse racing is big business and it also supports a lot of local business and traditional trades in the region. I sometimes wonder if this area has the highest numbers of horses and cyclists on its roads! Now for my amazing horse fact: Did you know that, dating back to Roman times, todays thoroughbreds were originally bred in our area by crossing native breeds with Arab stallions imported from the Middle East? At the Handy Mag we have been awash with tradesmen and other businesses looking to advertise their services and catch the moment (almost to the point of saying no room at the inn) as others are asking us to ‘stop the advert’ as they are too busy! It brings mixed emotions when we are told that the advert worked so well that we are no longer needed; at least for a few months. If you are one of the many that are undertaking a ‘house or garden project’ this summer, good luck and be sure to plan ahead so that you are not having to wait for busy tradesmen. I hear we are heading for a shortage of bricks and brickies! If you are organising an event in October onwards, don’t forget to let us know so we can help you publicise it in the magazine, as well as online. The next deadline will be Tuesday 8th September. Have a great rest of the summer. See you in October!

Have you been left out of someone’s Will?

A

ccording to the Office for National Statistics there were 506,790 deaths in the UK in 2013. The death of a relative is always a difficult and distressing time but imagine how you would feel if you had been treated unfairly by being excluded from his Last Will and Testament? Or you were concerned about the validity of the Will? Whilst no amount of money can ever compensate you for the death of a loved one, in these circumstances you may have to make the difficult decision to contest the deceased’s Will. You may be able to make a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 for reasonable financial provision from the deceased’s estate if you are one of the following: • The deceased’s spouse or civil partner, • A former spouse or civil partner, • A cohabiting partner for at least two years just before the deceased’s death • A child of the deceased including an adult child. • A child treated as a child of the deceased. This can sometimes include a foster child. • A person who was being wholly or partly maintained by the deceased just before the deceased’s death. Whilst making a claim is perhaps the furthest thing from your mind when coming to terms with your loss, it is vital that you do not delay in obtaining legal advice. Strict time limits apply 6 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

by Philip Chapman

and normally such a claim must be brought to court within 6 months of the date of the grant of representation (a grant of probate if there is a will, a grant of letters of administration if not). You will have to prove that the deceased failed to make ‘reasonable financial’ provision for you. What is ‘reasonable’ depends upon a number of factors including your own personal circumstances. We often hear from relatives of the deceased about their concerns that, at the time the will was made, the deceased did not have the mental capacity to make the will. This is a growing concern with the Alzheimer Society reporting that by 2015 there will be 850,000 people in the UK with dementia. Questions are often raised as to whether the deceased understood the full extent of his assets or the effect of the will and in some cases he may even have suffering from delusions which led to a relative being alienated and left out of the will. However mental capacity is only one of the grounds upon which you can challenge the validity of the deceased’s will. The others include: • The will was not signed or witnessed in accordance with the legal requirements. • Someone unduly influenced the deceased into making the will. • The will is invalid for some other reason • The deceased promised you a share of his or her estate and relying upon that promise you acted to your detriment e.g. by performing services for the deceased. The making of a will is not only for older people to consider. In

2014, 78% of adults aged 30 – 39, 54% of adults aged 50 -59 and 15% of UK adults over 70 did not have a will, according to a survey by unbiased.co.uk. If you die intestate (i.e. without a will) legal rules will decide in what order your assets with be shared out. This may not be what you want. So by making a will you can ensure that the assets you have worked hard for are divided in accordance with your wishes. It can also, with the right advice and guidance, help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable. If you do not wish to include someone in your will you can prepare a letter of wishes to accompany your will explaining the reason for your decision. Good legal advice at the time of making a will is essential. Your Will is the most important document you will ever sign….we do not have a voice from beyond the grave. Mitchells Solicitors understands the need to deal with these matters in a sensitive but professional manner. If you want advice about making a claim against an estate or challenging a will, Philip Chapman or Lorna Pratt will be happy to discuss this with you in more detail. If you have grounds for making a claim we may be able to act for you on a no win no fee basis. Our Kelly Cutsforth can discuss your requirements for the making of a will and a Lasting Power of Attorney. For more information telephone 0800 2461 012 or visit www. mitchellssolicitors.co.uk.

WHO’S GETTING YOUR MONEY – YOUR FAMILY OR THE GOVERNMENT? Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

they have the gall to take another 40% off you when you die.

R

egular readers of my ramblings will know that I consider a big part of my job as a financial planner is to protect my clients’ money from hostile attack. I am, admittedly, very vocal about it. And that sometimes causes a bit of a row with those people who don’t agree with me. The general argument goes something like this: Tax is just the price we have to pay to live in a civilised country. I agree. No really, I do. But I also have a couple of issues with this general principle. One - just how many bites of the cherry does the tax man actually want? We pay income tax on earnings, capital gains tax on gains, corporation tax on company profits, VAT at 20% - 20%!! – on everyday stuff we buy. We pay stamp duty, insurance tax, air passenger duty, car tax, council tax, national insurance. On and on. Not to mention the latest raid on pensions dressed up as “pensions freedom”. And then, to cap it all,

But my other gripe is just how incompetent the government-of-the-day is. From overspending on abandoned projects – like the disastrous attempt to computerise the NHS (£12 billion gone so far) – to fabricated MP’s expenses, it’s estimated that the total wasted on this nonsense comes to £82 billion. Think about that for a moment. This is your money we’re talking about here. As P J O’Rourke said “to give money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.” I estimate me and my team have saved at least £25 million of family money that would otherwise have gone down the tax pan and been wasted on the plethora of nonsensical schemes the powers-that-be dream up. Given the choice, wouldn’t you rather your money went to help your children get on the housing ladder, or pay for your grandchildrens’ education? Or even the donkey sanctuary? At least you get to decide. That’s why I make no apologies for my commitment to increase my clients’ (and their family’s) wealth, and protect it from the greedy bankers, crazy Governments, desperate authorities and other legalised robbers who are relentlessly attempting to take it off them.

To learn more about how to grow and protect your money, why not get your FREE copy of my “WEALTH KIT”, including my FREE audio CD “How to find thousands of lost pounds with little known secrets of the mega wealthy”, just call 0330 100 1744 and ask for Helen, quoting reference HM0715, email your details to helen@pen-life.co.uk, or fax them to 01904 466206, or complete the coupon below and send to Helen Scurry, 3 Tudor Court, Opus Avenue, York YO26 6RS and we’ll send you your FREE copy straight away. XV VETERANS’ CHARITY MATCH

Friday 18th September 2015

Friday 18th September – this could be the day the whole family become serious rugby fans! Malton & Norton Rugby Club will host the annual XV Veterans Charity Match on the afternoon and evening in aid of The Encephalitis Society and Ryedale Special Families. The event starts at 4pm with children’s entertainment, activities and free food for youngsters between 4-5pm accompanied by adults who’ve made a donation.

“We are keen for non-rugby players and families to come along and see what rugby is all about. Our event has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and you can just enjoy the event, even if you don’t follow the sport.”

The XV Veterans Charity Match kicks off at 5.30pm prompt. It is an official event of the Rugby World Cup Festival 2015 and a unique chance to get the rugby ‘bug’ if you haven’t already!

Rob Davies of Ryedale Special Families said: “Malton & Norton Rugby Club’s ‘third encounter’ takes place on Friday 18th September and this year they have chosen us and the Encephalitis Society as the recipient charities. The evening is going to be a complete family affair with many non rugby people coming along just to enjoy a fun evening and we hope around 1,000 spectators will attend!”

Those taking part include a number of other local organisations and businesses, and sponsorship opportunities are available.

So if you want a good night out in aid of two good causes, the XV Veterans Charity Match is the event for you!

Following the Veterans match, from 7pm until late, there will be entertainment and various delicious foods. created by Shoot the Bull and the Hand Held Food Company. Also the first game of the much-anticipated Rugby World Cup between England and Fiji will be shown live on the big screen at 8pm.

Tickets can be purchased from the Encephalitis Society Office (in Castlegate, Malton near Morrisons) or from the Rugby Club in Old Malton.

All proceeds go to the two charities – around £30,000 has been raised over the last two years. Tickets are available with a suggested donation of £5 per ticket in advance, or £7 on the day. One of the event’s organisers, Marcus Aldrich said:

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Top Tips from a dental professional

EVERYONE NEEDS A DENTAL INSPECTION. If your older and have lost most or all of your teeth you may feel by Christine Parker that you would not benefit BDS (GDC 72136) from a dental examination. As dentists we do not just look at your teeth we look at your whole mouth as it reflects your general health, recent evidence shows that poor oral health can contribute to disease elsewhere in the body. One of the main reasons for patients with no teeth to visit their dentist is to ensure they have no suspicious lesions in their mouth. Oral cancer in particular can be present but unnoticed by the patient until it is too late. Your dentist will carefully check the oral cavity and the entrance to the throat for any abnormalities and refer you should they discover anything they are not happy with. The fit and wear of your dentures changes over a period of time, your dentist can assess these and recommend relining or remaking the denture before it cracks in two or starts to fall out of your mouth. The supporting teeth for your denture are incredibly important they allow the denture to be braced, if they are not regularly attended to by a professional they may well loosen and compromise the fit of the denture. Medication can have serious affects in the mouth from causing the gums to swell and make brushing more difficult leading to gum disease, to oral dryness which can cause rapid decay of the remaining teeth. of teeth before Being able to chew properly An example and after treatment and feeling confident about our appearance matters to every age group so don’t feel you are beyond the need for care or that it doesn’t matter. The photos show the work we did for a patient in their 90’s which restored their confidence to be socially active again.

A Look At Hopi Ear Candle Treatments

by Paula Koeppen

H

opi Ear Candles, sometimes known as Thermal Auricular Therapy, is a very relaxing, natural therapy that promotes self healing, relaxation and can help with the effects of stress. Hopi Ear Candling can have a deeply relaxing effect of the autonomic nervous system, which both boosts the immune system and relieves stress and tension. It’s thought that many conditions associated with the head and face can benefit from a Hopi Ear Candle treatment. Hopi Ear Candles are ideal for all ages and especially beneficial for children and elderly people. Use can bring relief from the discomfort associated with ear wax build up, sinus congestion, pressure in the ears, general hearing loss, headaches and much, much more!! The candles are hollow tubes made of cotton, soaked in pure beeswax, honey, and herbs. With the patient lying on their side in a comfortable position, the candle is gently inserted into the ear. Once the candle is lit the patient will experience a pleasant crackling noise as the heat flow intensifies. The warming sensation from the candle stimulates the Reflex / Acupuncture points on the ear, thought to aid the body’s natural healing responses and encourages deep relaxation. The rising air through the column of the candle and gentle natural movement of the flame serve to gently massage the ear drum and regulate ear pressure, often described as a soothing, light sensation in the ear/head area. When the candle has burned to it’s safety line it is carefully removed from the ear and extinguished. The entire process is then repeated on the other ear. The contra-indication for Hopi Ear Candling are: Infection or inflammation of the ear, surgery on the ear within the last 3 months, perforation of the ear drum, auricular cysts, grommets, drains or ventilation tubes fitted, known allergy to bees wax/stings, epilepsy. Treatment takes approximately 45 minutes, only BIOSUN Ear Candles are used, the only ear candle in Europe to have a Medical Device Classification. the

If you have any questions regarding the treatment please don’t hesitate to contact me at The Clinic, 12 Newbiggin, Malton. 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

GIVE OR TAKE DAYS The next Give or Take Day will be on Sunday 25th October, from 9 – 12 noon in the Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall.

The reason that they are called ‘Give OR Take Days’ and not ‘Give and Take’, is that you do not have to give in order to take. Do you follow me? Unwanted goods are given by people who no longer need them. Anybody can take anything that they want, if they can find a use for it. It isn’t a ‘deal’ or a ‘bargain’ and no money is involved. There’s nothing quite so liberating as clearing out a drawer, a cupboard, a whole room even, and knowing that all the stuff you don’t want any longer will be used by someone else. There’s a big thrill in finding just the right little table or useful lawnmower, and being able to just take it home. Too much ‘stuff’ goes to landfill, and there is a limit to how much waste the planet can absorb. Of course the best answer would be to buy fewer items, and for them to be so well-made that they don’t wear out. However the wheels of commerce that drive the global system don’t like this approach. They can’t comprehend a world without ‘growth’ – but they may soon have to. We do live on a finite planet. I hope they have got a Plan B! See you in October.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS WITH YOUR LOCAL WI T he Women’s Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War.

Since 1915 the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK with over 212,000 members in 6,600 WIs. The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities. Members have campaigned to empower and support women within society, exerting their individual and collective influence and bringing many controversial issues to the fore often resulting in changes to legislation and government policies. Members are at the heart of the WI and they play a central role in bringing issues onto the WI’s national agenda. From equal pay to climate change, from gaps in the midwifery workforce to the plight of the honey bee, members have embraced a diverse set of 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

challenges and built a reputation as a practical and ambitious organisation that doesn’t shy away from tricky issues. The first WI meeting in the UK was held in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, Wales, on 16 September 1915. Whilst the meeting venues might have changed over the years from the local village hall to local cafés, pubs etc the ethos and reputation of the WI remains the same, and women join now to meet new friends, learn new skills and make a difference on matters that are important to them just as fellow members did in 1915.

KITCHENS & BEDROOMS MADE TO MEASURE

The View

By The Pastoral Poet On opening my morning curtain, A rain washed sun is on the rise. The weather seemingly uncertain, As scowling clouds impound the skies. I gaze towards the distant wolds; Frowning or smiling they stay sublime. Shaped by glacial overfolds; Smoothed by the warring winds of time. How variant their every mood; Imperturbable and steadfast, they Have fought to keep their solitude, From yesteryear to present day. A sylvan scape is to the fore, And where the light of day invades, Midst pines and graceful sycamore, Soft shadows tip-toe through the glades. Ten thousand morns this view has met me, Each different from the time before. Were I to live forever, let me View this view for evermore.

MERLIN TRADING UK LIMITED

When I was younger, aside from the sunshine and the jingle of the ice cream van, one of the things that I was most excited about each summer was the annual reading challenge held at the local library. The challenge is simple and exciting: read six books over the six week break and be rewarded with a medal when you returned back to school in September. You would be beaming with pride as the medal was presented to you in assembly in front of your friends. It doesn’t matter when you read your books, all at once or in a slow and steady manner over the six weeks, the only condition is that all six books are read before school begins in September. Being someone who has always tended to throw myself into things from the start, my mother and I had many arguments over how many books I could take out of the library. I wanted to take out all six at once but she wanted me to pace myself with one a week. Inevitably (and looking back, thankfully) my mum won which resulted in summers full of reading, ranging from Roald Dahl when I was little, to my favourites the Harry Potter and Narnia series as I grew older. These fond memories of participating in the challenge when I was younger sparked my interest in volunteering to help with the challenge in the past two summers. It has been heart-warming to see children still enthusiastically reading their books and eager to move onto the next one despite our age of electronic games and films. It’s not just the act of reading that makes the challenge something that I consider important (there are worlds that live in books that simply aren’t accessible through screens) but also the atmosphere that comes with it. With activities such as crafts, story-telling and treasure hunts, the summer reading challenge offers the opportunity to engage with something that is truly rewarding. A love of reading? It lasts for life. Emily

FUN FOR ALL AT

RYEDALE INDOOR BOWLS CLUB

Ryedale Indoor Bowls Club (RIBC) is looking forward to its new season, which starts at the end of August, and will welcome both old and new members. After a successful year it is offering extra league competitions and social bowling sessions.

I

t is also encouraging other groups and clubs to hire the facility on a one-off or regular basis. Bowling is a fun activity and gentle exercise for people of all ages and abilities – if you are interested and wish to know more the please contact the club on 01653 690010 or view the website www.ryedalebowls. com. RIBC is located in Bowling Lane just off Scarborough Road in Norton. The centre had been operated by Ryedale District Council until 2013 when the council closed it. A determined effort by members and local residents, assisted by Councillor Di Keal, led to the purchase of the facility for the community. Re-opened in Autumn 2014, the

54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

centre is now called the Ryedale Community and Leisure Centre and RIBC shares it with Brooklyn pre-school Nursery and Dance Expression dance school. The closure caused serious problems for the club but since re-opening members have been working hard to make it even better than before. So, for example, over the summer months volunteers have upgraded the insulation, making the building warmer and reducing running costs. On site are extra facilities including a restaurant, bar, function room and meeting room which are also available to hire for parties and other special events (email: ally8668@hotmail.com). The car park is large enough to

meet all needs. In addition to competitions the bowling area is used weekly by members the Ryedale Forum and the Driffield club and used by others (both local and from further afield) on a less regular basis. The club wants to encourage both young and old and those with disabilities and is looking at the possibility of providing other indoor sports and running special sessions for the less able. If you are part of a club or organisation looking to encourage its members to undertake new challenges then why not come along to the bowling club?

RHYTHM TO LIFE Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church Can you believe there is a drought in California? For 900 miles the Pacific Ocean is the state line, yet they have a serious water crisis this summer. Three main reasons are given: rising heat, depletion of ground water supplies and water shortages on the Colorado River. The demand for water is greater than the state can currently supply; they are in crisis. So what? I hear you cry! Well, I wonder if we are heading for a similar crisis. Not a water crisis, but an energy crisis. Are we demanding more than our supply can give? Recently I did a little research and discovered two alarming facts: Firstly, 54% of men and nearly 60% of women in the UK report to feeling constantly tired and secondly, the sales of energy drinks have soared to £1.5 million a year! Could there be a link? According to research, adults in the UK are sleeping less and less each year. Eight hours is still recommended for adults, nine for teenagers but on average two thirds of UK adults only get six hours and 27 minutes of sleep. Are we stealing from time meant for sleep to pack more and more into our day? Is the growing demand for energy drinks to compensate for the lack of sleep? Are we heading for a non-stop, 24/7 society where rest is frowned upon and long hours applauded? Even Weetabix have a new brand: ‘No time for breakfast? Grab a ‘Weetabix On The Go’ Breakfast Drink and fuel your day.’ Are we heading for a crisis? Yes, because our demand for energy is greater than our supply and we consider activity more valuable than rest. I believe God gave rhythm to life, night to follow day, rest to follow work; making rest essential to life. I was not created for 24/7 frenetic activity, but to find rest in His abundant supply; the giver of life. We all need time to be refreshed, recharged and replenished. There is a drought in California because they continue to take water from a limited supply, rather than drawing from the limitless supply on their doorstep. Are we demanding more and more from a limited supply, stealing from sleep, compensating with energy drinks, when right at our fingertips is a limitless supply? When the Atlantic Ocean is on your doorstep, should there be a drought?

GARDENING Garden Visiting

We are a curious lot us English – always eager to have a quick shufty around our neighbour’s houses and gardens to see exactly what ‘lies beneath’ and it appears to be something in our genes. Personally, I don’t visit many gardens (unless I’m working of course!) and I certainly wouldn’t just pitch up expecting someone to welcome me into his house and garden with open arms – but

I do help out my father-in-law when he generously opens his lovely garden for charitable events. These are always well attended and organised affairs, and almost always on Sunday afternoon so as not to clash with church or, heaven forbid, recovering from the night before! Normally I act as (unpaid!) tour guide and plant identifier and am always astounded by the reaction that people have when seeing the plot for the first time… blown away by the design which compartmentalises the acre of land into separate ‘rooms,’ each with its own theme or special planting schemes. Even though it is attached to a historic property,

they still do not expect to see such a magnificent display of plants, water features, sculptures and garden buildings right in the centre of the town! The photo shows visitors enjoying the garden (even on a rain-sodden day in June) and highlights the potential pitfalls – the little girl in pink somehow managed to dunk herself in the pond shortly after I took the picture. Luckily no children or fish were harmed on this occasion (!) but it highlights the responsibilities of the property owner when the garden is full of adults, children of varying sizes, pets and wheelchair users. What visitors don’t see is the huge amount of blood, sweat,

>> tears and cash that are swallowed up by gardens that need to be on the top of their game when inviting the general public to come and enjoy them. This is particularly true for all those house owners who sign up to the National Gardens Scheme in the hope of reaching the horticultural holy grail of entry into the Yellow Book. Like the Mafia, it is extremely well organised, with networks of good people right across the country who stringently vet gardens of all shapes and sizes before they are finally given the green (or should that be yellow?) light to be an NGS approved garden. Once in, you are tied to an annual round of signage, parking problems, tea and cake production, cash collecting and entertaining vast hordes of Yellow Book aficionados who are as keen as mustard on collecting as many visit ‘ticks’ in a season as possible. Rather akin to trainspotting or collecting all the names of Eddie Stobart’s lorries– it seems to particularly appeal to those of us who are not shy of donning a Kagool at the slightest hint of dampness in the air….. I’m not sure whether domestic garden visiting is a purely English phenomenon – I assume it probably is as we have such a wide variety of garden styles on offer. No German towns (or any other EU country just in case I’m accused of bias!) could compete with our oriental, naturalistic, traditional, contemporary or just plain idiosyncratic gardens – all nurtured and loved to within an inch of their lives. This, together with their doting owners, puts the English garden on a level that other nations can only envy – and as for our cream teas, well it’s worth slipping a Kagool on just for that!

CLASSIC CARS BMW 5 SERIES (E28) By Kit Johnson

It is the styling that sets the E28 apart from other versions of the 5 Series. Heavily influenced by the 635 CSI, this version has the same forward sloping shark nose, beautifully tidy boot and perfect proportions. It is a style that, like shoulder pads and big hair, is fixed firmly in the 1980s but, unlike those two looks, is a sad loss to the world of design.

O

nce the province of flat cap wearing “enthusiasts,” classic cars are now hugely popular with prices rocketing upwards. The rarest, most collectible cars are now the province of the super-rich but, if you know what you’re looking for, you can pick up a gem that will provide you with hours of enjoyable motoring and still make you a hefty profit when you sell it on. The BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium brand executive saloons and has done since the 1970s. There are hundreds of thousands of used cars out there but it is the second generation, the E28, which has emerged as a collectible classic for today. Produced between 1981 and 1988, the E28 was the complete all round package. BMW’s iconic straight 6 engine, available in capacities ranging from 2.0 to 3.5 litres, provided effortless performance with silky smooth refinement. The interior had plenty enough space for 5 adults and their luggage, comfort galore and plenty of equipment. The handling was pin sharp, making it great fun to drive, and matched by a firm but cosseting ride.

As with most classic cars, it is important that you choose the right model. BMW offered a basic version of this 5 Series with an uninspiring, bog standard, 1.8 litre 4 cylinder engine. Don’t buy one! Similarly, gearboxes matter. The 2.0 and 2.5 litre straight are better mated to the 5 speed manual while the 2.8 or 3.5 are preferable with the 4 speed auto. Metallic paint looks better on this car than solid red, white or blue. Shop around and electric windows and mirrors, leather upholstery and even aircon are all there for the asking. All the 6 cylinder versions of the E28 were good performers, even the 2.0 litre managed 150bhp. However, the 3.5 litre was a properly fast car, even by today’s standards, with a sub 7 seconds 0-60 time and a top whack of 150mph. The holy grail of E28 ownership is the M5. This was the first of the “Q Cars,” that looked like a bog standard executive saloon but went like a Ferrari. A hand built version of the 3.5 litre straight 6 kicked out 286bhp and catapulted this substantial family car to 60 in less than 6 seconds. Perfect 50/50 weight distribution and sports suspension meant that it handled like a dream. Only 187 right hand drive cars made it to the UK, making surviving examples extremely rare. You can pick up a rough and ready E28 for under £2k, but bear in mind that the restoration costs are

RYEDALE • AUGUST 2015 • ISSUE 113 going to be steep. When you think that a pristine low mileage 2.0 litre car can be yours for a mere £5k and even a mint 535i should only set you back £6500, it is worth paying the extra for a low mileage car in solid condition. The M5 is a different story though, with good examples going for the thick end of £40k. If you can find a mechanically sound motor for around the £15k mark, it is well worth putting up the money to restore the interior and bodywork. The E28 5 series is that rare thing, a classic car that you can buy in good condition at a reasonable price, drive every day of the week and still sell on for a profit. What are you waiting for?

apanese drumming is popular across the world, and has now come to Yorkshire. Mary Murata of Kaminari UK Taiko explains more

Taiko simply means “drum” in Japanese but has come to refer to a style of drumming that is characterised by large drums, high energy and martial arts style movements. It is as much a visual performing art as music. Modern taiko, which is played as a group, can trace its origins to Japan in the 1950s when a jazz drummer decided to apply the principles of jazz rhythms to traditional Japanese instruments. An immediate hit, its popularity spread quickly all over the globe. Since 2009, York-based Kaminari UK Taiko Drummers have been performing this exciting style of drumming around Yorkshire and beyond. They have become firm favourites at events such as the Black Swan Folk Weekend and Galtres Festival, as well as doing performances at the NRM and Selby Abbey, fundraisers

at Bishopthorpe Palace and Castle Howard, and most recently appearing at Saltaire Day of Dance and Malton Food Lovers Festival. “Playing taiko is great fun! You can make a great sound immediately and within an hour of starting can be playing a piece!” says taiko instructor Jared Hardwick. “Although, once you start to learn seriously, you realise that there is so much more to learn.” Taiko is a group activity – this is great for team building and socialising, as well as learning new skills. It is energetic so a fun way to keep fit too.

Ryedale Dog Rescue Poetry Competition opens in September. Keep an eye on our website for further details. DOG OF THE MONTH - MONTY It is with great sadness that Monty has returned to us for re-homing following the tragic death of his owner. This handsome lad is now two and a half years old and a larger than life character. A boxer cross, he has many happy boxer traits and just loves life. He is very sociable with humans but can be very playful at times so we would be looking for a home without very small children. He’s fine around other dogs but again because of his size and strength we would be looking to home him as an only dog or with a dog of similar size and preferably female. To find out more about Monty or any of our dogs please contact us on 07581 324153. MALTON - A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN RACING Contributed by one of the many knowledgeable equine clients of Station House Vets In the 20th century, Miles Henry Easterby, who is always known as Peter, became the country’s leading trainer of jumping horses, winning nearly every big race, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice and the Champion Hurdle on five occasions from his farm at Great Habton, a village a few miles west of the town.

For more than two centuries Malton has been a major centre for the training of racehorses. Its main attractions are its gallops for, in the same way that major breweries are based near suitable water sources, training centres have sprung up where there are top-class facilities for the conditioning of racehorses. Most trainers in Malton use the Langton Wold gallops, 100 acres of permanent downland a couple of miles south of the town. They are in fact just outside the town of Norton, and though we regularly read about ‘Malton’ trainers, the majority of racing stables are actually situated in Norton. Newmarket, Lambourn and the Yorkshire Dales village Middleham are the other three principal British training centres and Malton’s owes much of its reputation for being a top racing town to a guy called John Scott, who came to Norton back in the 19th century. He bought Whitewall stables in 1825 and he eventually built up a team of 100 horses, which

was a huge string on those days. Eventually known as the Wizard Of The North, he won nearly every big Flat race, most notably 41 classic races including Britain’s biggest and best-known event, the Epsom Derby, six times. One of his Derby winners was West Australian, who in 1841 created history by become the first horse to win the British Triple Crown, three classic races, the 2,000 Guineas over a mile at Newmarket in the spring, the Derby which is over a mile and a half in June and Yorkshire’s own classic, the St Leger which is run over a mile and three-quarters at Doncaster every September. The record-breaking Scott won the St Leger an amazing 16 times. Another Malton-trained horse to win the Derby in the 19th century was the filly Blink Bonny, who became only the second filly ever to win the race and she also completed a remarkable double by winning the Oaks in the same year. She was owned, trained and was bred by William I’Anson who lived at Spring Cottage stables, Norton, now the base of Brian Ellison.

Another leading trainer of jumpers in the same era was Jimmy FitzGerald, who came across from Ireland to Britain with just five pounds in his pocket, and ended up as leading jockey over jumps. He was forced to retire from riding after fracturing his skull but began training and from Norton Grange stables had more than 1,200 winners including the 1985 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Forgive’N Forget. One race to elude both Easterby and FitzGerald was the Grand National though Bill Dutton, who trained at Grove Cottage Stables in Norton in the 1950’s and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Limber Hill, rode the 100-1 shot Tipperary Tim to win the race in 1928, but only after all of his 41 rivals had fallen. Former jump jockeys Richard Fahey, Brian Ellison and John Quinn, together with Peter Easterby’s son Tim, are the town’s flag bearers these days, and though Easterby is the only one of the four to have won a classic race, Bollin Eric in the 2002 St Leger, all regularly send horses to compete at the highest level against in most of the country’s biggest races, both on the Flat and over jumps, and ensure that Malton remains one of Britain’s major centres of excellence in the training of racehorses.

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

DENTAL DISEASE

By Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

Chewing of hard objects i.e. stones, bones, antlers should be discouraged as they may damage and fracture teeth and possibly lead to the ingestion of foreign bodies. Chews that display the ‘VOHC’ approved logo have met required standards that allow claims in efficacy and improving oral hygiene (www.vohc.org). If calculus formation is present it is important that it is mechanically descaled under anaesthesia before preventative dental care instigated.

D

ental disease affects 60-80% of cats and dogs. A thin film of oral bacteria, salivary proteins and food debris build up above the crown causing gingivitis. Left untreated it is calcified to form tartar, a rough medium for bacterial attachment. Bacteria rapidly multiply causing periodontal pockets, gum recession, destruction of periodontal ligaments and eventually tooth loss. Inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissue leads to anorexia and the build up of bacteria increases the workload of the liver and kidney and may impact on cardiac function. Breeds and immune status may also influence dental disease

Regular dental health checks will detect any early signs or symptoms of periodontal disease. If a problem is detected the treatment should be carried out as soon as possible. We recommend that your pet should have an annual health check with the veterinary surgeon and a three monthly or six monthly check with the veterinary nurse. We will be happy to offer any help and advice to ensure your pet has a happy and healthy smile.

Positively and effectively brushing your pet’s teeth on a daily basis removes the bio-film reducing gingivitis and periodontal disease. It also promotes a positive bond between you and your pet. A special pet toothpaste must be used, as unlike human toothpastes they are designed to be swallowed by your pet. They do not foam or contain fluoride, which can have harmful effects on your pet’s stomach. They also come in palatable flavours, which your pet will enjoy. Long term compliance is often difficult and dietary advice is often given as an alternative. Wet foods may leave food debris which encourages plaque formation. Feeding dry foods, with a fibrous content provides an abrasive property reducing plaque. Feeding larger fibrous kibbles enforces chewing and allows the tooth to penetrate the kibble without shattering it resulting in the abrasive action reaching up to the gum margin. Some dental diets include polyphosphate salts to trap calcium, transferring it to the digestion tract where it is absorbed therefore reducing salivary calcium and tartar formation. 70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

4TH ANNUAL THORNTON LE DALE SCARECROW FESTIVAL SATURDAY 29 TO MONDAY 31 AUGUST This popular festival takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend around the village. Why not join in and enjoy the walk around beautiful Thornton le Dale and spot as many scarecrows as you can! You can purchase trail maps, raffle tickets and souvenirs, and any surplus of funds will be put to local good causes. There is plenty of car parking space in the heart of the village. Last year’s festival raised an amazing £1000 which has helped to purchase a Heart Defibrillator which will be installed at the Village Green later this year.

NEW RYEDALE LIONS PRESIDENT REVS UP

M

otorcycle enthusiast Jim Ingham is revving up to take over as President of the Ryedale Lions club.

over the reins at the Lions with the intention of continuing to build and develop the club to adapt its traditional strength as a community service organisation to the needs of the modern world. New President of the Ryedale Lions, Jim Ingham, receives the chain of office from retiring President, David Tomlinson.

Jim, 64, has retired from local government where he managed an Internal Audit Consortium, serving local councils. He believes that this year the Ryedale Lions are set to roar. “Many volunteer service organisations find it difficult to maintain support but we are a growing and healthy club attracting a much wider range of members. We share a common interest in wanting to help others,” said Jim. Jim is also clerk to Snainton Parish Council, has an active role with St John’s Church, and is Treasurer to the Yorkshire section of the BMW Club. He takes 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Retiring President, David Tomlinson, said his year in office had brought home to him the wide range of work that the Lions undertake. In the past year the club has raised more than £20,000. “Many of our donations and offers of support are to well-known local organisations and charities but much of our work goes on behind the scenes helping individuals in need,” he said. The club also operates a fleet of more than 50 mobility scooters to help those who would otherwise be housebound to retain their independence. If you know of a way in which you think the Lions club could help an individual or local group you can e-mail the club’s secretary at bobpeirson@ googlemail.com. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 8th September
