elcome to our August/September edition.

Each year we publish 11 editions of the Handy Mag, with our Aug/Sept edition covering two months. Print deadlines are relentless for the rest of the year so it’s lovely to skip a month, breathe and take on some of those other tasks that we keep on postponing. Both Nicky and I are looking forward to ‘dipping out’ and heading off with our families, hoping to find some sun and recharge for the October issue and the run up to Christmas! At the Handy Mag it has been a busy first half of 2017 and we are hoping to find someone to help us in the office from September onwards. If you’d like to join our friendly office in the centre of Malton, we’d love to hear from you. Please have a look at our advert on page 8. For the past six years August has been an exciting, if stressful, time in our house with either GCSE or A Level results being revealed. This year marks a watershed as our youngest waits on his A levels, and school is no more. Good luck if this is you this summer! As usual there are lots of events to enjoy over the remaining summer months. Malton Festival of Racing returns on the 17th September, providing a great opportunity to see behind the scenes of the racing industry with a number of local stables opening their doors. Helmsley Castle is under siege on the 12th and 13th August and there are lessons available in sword skills at Rievaulx Abbey on weekends throughout the summer. Perfect for entertaining the children during the long summer hols. If wine is your thing, or even if not, Ryedale Vineyards are having an open weekend on the last weekend of August. There will be tours, tastings, food and music. If the sun shines you could be in Tuscany…. Well done to Mrs Turner from Norton for winning our June competition.

The service currently has around 3 volunteers – but more are needed to reach those who most need help. There is a Lunch Club on Mondays which provides those who use it with a chance to leave the house and meet friends old and new, whilst enjoying activities as well as providing older people with a hot, nutritious meal. This can go a long way to reducing the isolation and loneliness that can set in when getting out and about is difficult. A new Drop In service on Wednesdays is to be

Natasha Mort, Operations Manager said: “These are really vital services for older people in the community. Spending time having a chat and getting a nutritious meal may not seem like much, but it makes a massive difference to the older people who use the services. Our volunteers are fantastic and they really enjoy what they do; they get as much out of volunteering as they put in.” Volunteers can choose to dedicate as much or as little time to volunteering as they like (on average 2 hours a week). To find out more about the service please contact the Leeds York Hub on 0113 887 3597 who will take your details and send them to Natasha who will get back to you.

M

alton District Male Voice Choir, praised by Gareth Malone for singing “with guts and Yorkshire spirit”, is tuning up for a busy programme of events which will include a home concert marking its tenth birthday. Founded in 2007, the choir will perform over the coming months in Scarborough and Bridlington as well as in local villages and in an anniversary concert in Malton. When the choir sang for Gareth Malone in Malton last year, the popular national choirmaster said on BBC TV that it sang “with guts and Yorkshire spirit and made me feel energised”. The Radio Times described the group as “a gruff and characterful troupe of Yorkshire pensioners”. The choir, believed to be the youngest of its kind in the region and with members ranging in age from 20 to 94, heads for Scarborough on 23rd August for its second concert in the spectacular Queen Street Methodist Church. It returns to the East coast on 4th November to join choirs from across the region for the fourth time in the Festival of Choirs and Voices in Christ Church Bridlington. The Malton men are back home for their “Decade of Song” anniversary concert on 16th September in St Michael’s Church. Special guests and a ‘blast from the past’ selection of songs will set the birthday event apart. The choir is in Cropton village on 6th October for the fourth time in what is becoming a regular annual concert engagement while it makes a debut appearance in Scagglethorpe on 25th November to sing in aid of cancer support. The choir holds its annual Christmas family concert in Malton’s St Michael’s Church on 10th December at 3pm. The group meets most Monday evenings 7.309.30pm in Malton Baptist Church Community Hall and welcomes newcomers of all ages, with or without singing experience. For details or to book the choir call David Ackroyd, on 01944 758693, or Chairman Tom Todd on 01653 692362.

Kirkbymoorside Environment Group REPAIR CAFÉ

Plans are afoot to start up a repair café one evening each month in Kirkbymoorside. The environmental ideas behind this are: • Perfectly good kit does not get thrown away into landfill. • Fewer resources are demanded of the environment to make new things. • A culture of preserving what we’ve got is encouraged. • It’s a golden opportunity to train youngsters (and their elders) in the art of repairing. We are building a team of volunteer repairers and would welcome a few more. If you’re good at mending household items, bikes, electricals, garden tools, furniture, laptops, altering or mending clothes, untangling knitting… any useful skills will be welcomed. The café element gives people a chance to sit down with a drink and something tasty while learning how repairs are done. It could also be a creative forum for new ideas. A volunteer to deal with the kettle, cakes and biscuits would also be welcome.

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

Making Private Dentistry Affordable

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

Do you think that private dental care is financially out of your reach? Do you always need treatment when you go to the dentist? Take a new approach this summer and book to see how we can stop the cycle of treatment. We will personalise advice to you and explain how you can reduce your need for further care. We offer pay as you go by cash, card and personal cheque. We also offer a monthly payment plan which for less than 50p a day covers your twice yearly visits and gives a generous 20% discount on any further treatment you may need (terms apply). You will see the same dentist each time so we can really monitor how you are doing and help you to have the best mouth you can. Our appointments are in a friendly unrushed atmosphere in modern and comfortable surroundings. New patient appointments are available this August so take the first steps to a healthier and more attractive smile. For an appointment to discuss your needs please contact Jan at Howardian Dental on 01347 878111.

Ryedale Vineyards

S

Open Weekend Sunday 27th & Monday 28th August from 10am onwards

et on south facing slopes at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, Ryedale Vineyards is an idyllic and tranquil setting to enjoy locally produced wines, afternoon teas and learn all about local wine production.

On the last weekend in August, the grapes will be ripening and the Fletcher family are throwing open their gates for the weekend. There will be mini tours, free tastings and entertainment. “We are really looking forward to showing off all of our hard work this year to visitors. We hope to meet lots of people over the weekend,” says Michelle.

The vineyard at Farfield Farm, Westow is a family affair with Michelle and Jon Fletcher working together with sons, Jack and Kit. The family are knowledgeable and passionate about wine production and a tour of the winery is a must, with a tasting of course!

Michelle and Jon have big plans for the vineyard. In the next few weeks there will be a pizza oven so that their pizza and wine nights can become a reality in their Italian garden.

Jon says “Our vines are grown using a low spray approach, our farming methods have a low impact on the countryside and harvesting is done by hand. In an area rich with wildlife, we have worked closely with the RSPB and other groups to ensure that wildlife is not only protected but enhanced.” There have been vineyards at Westow since 2006 and the resulting Ryedale wines have been winning competition medals ever since. “Currently we produce about 7000 bottles a year but with 500 more vines being planted as we speak this will increase.” says Jon. “You can even adopt a vine! Your chosen vine will be labelled with your name and you are welcome to visit and tour the vineyard.” It’s not all about wine at Farfield Farm. Groups can be treated to fresh homemade afternoon teas or why not book a packed hamper for two to enjoy in your favourite spot in the vineyard!

Join the Fletcher family at the open weekend or, if not, why not book onto a tour or help out at this year’s harvest – volunteers are always welcome! There’s more information at www. ryedalevineyards.co.uk or on 01653 658035

Ryedale Book Festival at The Yorkshire Arboretum Sunday 20th August

Ryedale Book Festival has organised a day of literary events with a tree theme – as is fitting for this location! Families will be able to enjoy stories with a simple craft activity led by Karin Celestine, or be taken on a magical journey by international storyteller Cat Weatherill. Professor Fiona Stafford will be talking with the Arboretum Trust’s Director Dr John Grimshaw about her book “The Long, Long Life of Trees”, which was a Sunday Times bestseller in 2016. Local poet Daniella Nunnari will be reading her poetry at intervals throughout the day and supporting others to write their own poems during a lunchtime poetry workshop. Visual artist Alice Fox is running a Leaf Stitching workshop for adults. Spaces are limited so people are advised to book their place on-line http://ryedalebookfestival.com/yorkshirearboretum/ All other events are included in the standard admission fee to the Arboretum which is open from 10 am until 5.30pm.

FRIENDS OF MALTON MUSEUM LECTURE

Wednesday 20 September ‘Let them wear milk.’. Mid-twentieth Century Fashion, Fibres and Fascism by Dr. Mary M Brooks. With war looming, mid-twentieth century politicians in both Allied and Axis countries became anxious about the availability of wool for the military. New textiles made from milk, soya beans and peanuts were developed and promoted as fashionable fibres for the home market. This lecture will explore the development and making of these fibres and their political and social implications. It will look at how their glossy image contrasted with the reality of mail-order purchasing as well as the problems of wearing and caring for ‘cheesy’ materials which shrank in the wash – and ask why they have slipped so quickly from memory. You will be able to handle samples and garments made from these extraordinary forgotten fibres. 7.30pm at The Library, East Wing, Malton School, MIddlecave Road, Malton. Friends of the Museum – free of charge. Visitors welcome, admission £3. Subscriptions for this coming season are now due.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Why Responsive Design is a Vital Part of a Successful Website By Rob Davies, It'seeze Ryedale

W

hat kind of device do you use when searching the internet? Is it your laptop or desktop? Perhaps it’s your tablet or smartphone?

Making sure that a website looks great and functions perfectly on every type of device is really important, and that’s where responsive web design comes in.

What is responsive web design? Traditional, non-responsive web designs are static - they are made to work on a desktop or laptop screen. When a user tries to access these sites from a mobile device, like a smartphone or tablet - it can be difficult to read content, navigate between pages and use the site to its full potential. With a responsively designed site, the design reformats itself automatically to fit the device - providing the visitor with the best possible experience. This means no pinching the screen, scrolling, zooming in or squinting to find the information they are looking for.

The benefits of responsive design... Your website will work on every device. By opting for responsive web design, you’re making sure that your customers enjoy the best possible experience, whatever device they’re using. A decade ago, browsing the internet was reserved entirely for desktop computers and laptops. This simply isn’t the case any more. In fact, we’ve now passed the tipping point - in 2016 56% of site visits come from mobile devices, and this figure is only going up. Today, it’s increasingly likely that your customers and potential customers may want to visit your site on multiple devices. A responsively designed website is the best way to achieve this.

Your SEO will benefit Google and the other search engines prefer sites with responsive design, and are actively promoting mobile friendly sites in the search rankings. In 2014, Google began adding the words “mobile friendly” to the search listings on responsive sites when accessed from mobile devices. Since 2015, Google has been actively reward responsively designed sites with higher rankings in the search results. It’s better for your brand Your website is likely to be the first time that many customers engage with your business, and you only get one chance to make a first impression! If potential customers can’t access your site, or find it hard to use, then it reflects negatively on your business. They may never come back. Having a responsive design will help to ensure that customers can reach all the content and functionality they need to make an informed buying decision. It’s an important part of ‘future-proofing’ No one knows what kind of devices people will be using in a few years time. Having a responsively designed site will help to ensure that your site continues to look fantastic and work perfectly on the next generation of internet enabled devices.

How Its'eeze can help At it’seeze, all the websites we create are responsively designed. We’re here to help drive your business performance online with a fantastic, custom-designed website that you can edit yourself. You won’t find industry jargon or tech speak here – just beautiful websites designed to work in the modern world.

Country Living By The Revd Tim Robinson, Vicar of Helmsley

I

t has been a huge privilege as someone who was brought up in Birkenhead and then live most of my years in London and Middlesbrough to move to the countryside. There are obvious differences - large and small populations, built up and natural environments. But the real contrasts are lived. One thing I very much appreciate living in rural Britain is that life is not quite so hectic. And there is a passage from the Old Testament (Ecclesiastes 3) that seems to sum this up. It is part of the Wisdom Literature of the Bible (which also includes Psalms and Proverbs): For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

Fortunately here we are still in touch with this ancient knowledge. When life is too hectic I read this lovely calming passage. This is Wisdom for everyone, whether we live in town or country. It is this long perspective that is needed both for ourselves and our leaders especially as we in Great Britain go forward in to the unknown territory of leaving the European Community. May we too strive to seek the common good for both ourselves and future generations.

Hammered and shaped from founder’s latten, Amulets of a simple pattern. Symbols of a time gone by, Worn to banish the ‘evil eye.’ Adorning the tack of working horses, Polished to ward off evil forces. Fear of the unknown, a part of life, A time when superstition was rife. As man began to work the land, The horse was soon to take command. Farmers and hauliers were keen to acquire, The Clydesdale, Suffolk Punch and Shire. Each horseman would bedeck his team With polished harness and brasses agleam. Bells with coloured horse hair cockades, Were worn at shows and May-Day parades. Desire for the hanging brass, Saw foundries turn them out en masse. Mass produced to meet demand, Finishing was done by hand. Rare brasses now are keenly sought, And by collectors sold and bought. Symbols of a time gone by. Still warding off the ‘evil eye.’ Clive Milson

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Things Are Hotting Up by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic Bee and wasp:

stings are another seasonal problem. Some pets are allergic to their stings and may need prompt veterinary attention.

Grass Seeds:

S

ummer is here! But when the heat turns up, the dangers to pets increase too.

To keep your dog, cat and other furry friends safe, make sure you are prepared. To help you we’ve put together some top summer survival tips: Summer walks: When walking your dogs, do try to avoid the hottest times of the day. Heat stroke is a real risk for many breeds but particularly those with shorter noses or who are overweight. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the great weather so just make use of the light evenings and go out when it is cooler.

UV Alert!:

Just like us, sunburn can cause problems for our pets. Cats are natural sun bathers, but cats with white noses and ear tips are particularly vulnerable to sun burn and subsequent skin cancer. This risk can be reduced by keeping them out of the sun, or by applying sunblock to these areas during the summer months.

Summer shade:

Guinea pigs and rabbits need an area of shade so that they do not overheat – guinea pigs particularly are unable to regulate their body temperature and both they and rabbits are vulnerable to sunburn.

Flystrike:

is a very serious problem at this time of year. Rabbits’ rear ends often become damp and this moist area attracts flies, which lay their eggs there. These eggs hatch out into maggots which can cause life threatening infections. Rabbits’ rear ends should be inspected daily for fly eggs and maggots, and soiled bedding should be cleaned out daily. Call us immediately if you are worried.

It is really the structure of the grass awn that makes them potentially hazardous for our pets. The rough, bristly texture allows them to attach easily to a dog’s hair. Once attached, the sharp point at the end helps them to penetrate the skin and the arrow-like arrangement of the barbs promotes forward movement and migration inside the body. Grass seeds can also find their way into a dog’s ear canals or under their eyelids and they may even be inhaled, lodging in the nose or lungs. And finally – NEVER leave pets in cars. Even on dull days, they can heat up and become ovens. Unlike us, dogs cannot sweat, so they must lose body heat by panting, which uses up a lot of water and can lead to rapid dehydration.

Could you have a spare hour or two to help us save a dog's life? Here’s how you could help... • Sort out that spare room/garage and donate any unused items to RDR for our tombolas/raffles. • Set up a regular donation to RDR - just £2 a month makes a huge difference. • Any good at baking or crafts? We always need items to sell on our stalls. • Come along to one of our events!

Got a bit more time to give...?

• Become a foster family - We do need a “bank” of foster carers, as some dogs react badly to kennel life and this decreases their chances of being re-homed. • Run your own sponsored event for us. • Help man a stall at one of our fundraising days or car boots. Look out for our events in the What’s On section.

Dog of the month: Belle

Belle is approx 7 months old and is a German Shepherd. She is expected to grow into quite a tall dog looking at her bone structure. She’s had a lot of changes in her short life, before ending up in a council stray pound, so can be nervous of new people and new situations. She would suit a home without small children due to her size and playfulness. Belle gets on well with other dogs and once she feels safe is very attentive to people. Due to her unstable start in life we would be looking for a home where someone is around most of the time to help her make up for lost time. If you think you may be able to offer Belle the loving forever home she needs, please call us on 07581 324153.

For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you)

Introducing a new pet

A

By Lucy Nowell BAVetMB MRCVS, Station House Vets

new pet can cause significant disruption and upset to the existing animal which can lead to long term problems, particularly in the case of cats. A little bit of planning and management can make the difference between good or bad future relationships. Plan ahead! It may be easier to introduce a dog to a resident cat as it won’t be viewed as competition for resources. Alternatively consider introducing a kitten as this may be less threatening than an adult cat. A dog that is familiar with cats or a puppy might be considered, as is breed of dog – those bred to chase small furry things might be less preferable. The first meeting! Arrange to pick up the new pet when you have plenty of time. Restrict the new pet to an area, so the existing pet can get away easily. Consider using a crate in a quiet room for a new cat and start swapping the bedding between cats prior to meeting so they get used to each other’s smells. A crate positioned out of a main thoroughfare or limiting the areas of access in the house will allow your pet to follow his usual routines and escape easily. At the first meeting, distract the new cat with food and maintain normal routine and attention toward the existing cat. When both cats are relaxed consider moving the pen to other areas of the house and rubbing a face cloth wiped over the face and body of the cat onto prominent objects to intermingle the cats smells. Supervise the puppy/dog and allow the cat to approach, if willing, when they are first introduced. Reward the puppy for calm behaviour towards the cat and maintain supervision until both parties are relaxed. Pheromones can help with the introduction of any new pet. Feliway ® and Adaptil ® are products that come as both environmental sprays (not for use directly on the pet) and diffusers, have calming properties and are available at our clinic. If you are introducing new cats make sure there are sufficient resources – litter trays, food and water bowls, resting and hiding places for each cat. Remember to register your new pet at the clinic and enquire about vaccination, health checks and parasite products according to your pets needs. Have fun!

Virtual Revolution By Mary Mahon

E

very day now it seems there are new technological advancements, so it’s no surprise why many people seem to spend half their lives in a virtual world. Bus journeys, lunch breaks, out in the park… if you look around, you can see our zombie-esque era transfixed to their phone screen! Yet on the horizon looms a new type of technology, one that doesn’t involve simply staring at a screen… In bursts virtual reality! All manners of crazy things are possible, from birdlike flight, to slaying the undead, to even visiting an estate agency without having to step a foot outside! However, it’s not just our mind but our entire body being immersed virtually. Many apps allow us to create ‘avatars’ of ourselves, even letting us track exactly where our friends are on a real-life map. Companies all around the world are racing ahead to invent the next big thing; progressing from sight and sound, to smell, touch and taste, the aim is to truly trick our senses. Yet whilst virtual reality is undeniably exciting, it also can ignite a whole spectrum of different opinions on what is ‘too far’… If we can achieve amazing things without having to venture outside, will humanity introvert itself, and real life experiences become unpopular as we all succumb to a Matrix-style world? Could we inflict psychological damage if our brain is tricked into believing we truly are being hunted by zombies? And are virtual mapping systems incredibly dangerous? Unbeknown to most, virtual reality has the opportunity to help many; mapping systems can teach wheelchair users and autistic people to navigate and cope with busy public places, traumatic experiences can be recreated with doctors to help cure PTSD, and allegedly even soothe the experience of childbirth by projecting a relaxing setting through a pair of VR goggles. Regardless of whether we like it or not, our future seems to be heading towards a virtual revolution, and I believe the creativity should be embraced - provided we still distinguish our real world from the virtual, and continue to revel in the wonders it provides too.
