elcome to our August/ September edition.
As usual at this time of year, this is a double issue so you won’t be hearing from us again until our October edition at the end of September. Whilst we do enjoy publishing the magazines, it’s a stressful business and lovely to take a break for a few weeks to catch up, tidy up and plan for the next year. We’ll all be taking some time out with our families, me in the usual tent in a field away from the internet, the rest probably somewhere more luxurious. I don’t think camping is Nicky and Mandy’s thing! The midges, cold showers, scrambling around on the floor in the mud and camp beds…ah summer! This month we’ve been fundraising for local charity Ryedale Special Families. The charity really needs new premises so that they can offer improved facilities and provide even greater support for families. They need to raise over £100,000 this year to help with their project. Read more on page 23. There are lots of summer events to enjoy if you’re staying at home and have bored children to entertain. For some fantastic local summer fun, have a good look through the magazine. Our monthly listings have a huge range of events for everyone and when the summer hols are over, there’s still the Harvest Food Lovers Festival in Malton on 8th September and the Festival of Racing on 16th September to look forward to. When this edition has gone off to the printers, we’ll be working towards our October edition so please keep us informed of anything you’d like to publicise for the autumn and winter. Our next deadline will be Tuesday 4th September for both businesses and community information.

Brass band concerts have again been organised at Thornton Dale on the Green and Stape Silver Band will be playing on Sunday 5th August This is followed by their annual concert at the Kirk Theatre Pickering on Saturday 1st September. The theme this year is ‘1918’ and they will be playing music to celebrate 100 years since the formation of the RAF, together with the events, births, and deaths associated with the year 1918. Tickets are available from The Kirk Theatre, or on the door on the evening. The band will also be playing in Pickering at the NYMR Car Park on Sunday 14th October (War Weekend). In addition to their concerts, the band has two fundraising events. Firstly, there will be a cake stall in Pickering Market Place on the morning of Saturday 1st September, where there will be a wide range of home baking on offer. The other ongoing fundraiser is a Yorkshire quiz, kindly sponsored by Eastgate Cottages Ltd, which is available from many shops in Pickering and Malton. The quiz must be returned by 30th September so there is plenty of time to complete it and get it back to them. Full details are on the quiz and there are cash prizes up for grabs. The answers will be published on the Band’s website www.silverstapeband during October. Come Christmastime, the band is playing at the Christmas lights ‘switch on’ in Pickering. Finally, they shall be finishing off an eventful year with their Annual Concert for Yorkshire Cancer on Sunday 16th December in Pickering Church. For more details visit www.stapesilverband.co.uk

Kirkbymoorside Environment Group THE PLASTIC PROBLEM
BUSINESS INSURANCE THAT’S ON YOUR DOORSTEP
Having woken up to the wonders of plastic in the 20th century we are now realising that these wonders have a price tag. The very qualities that make it so useful also present us with big problems. • It is durable - so so never biodegrades. It is clogging up the oceans and getting into the bodies of fish, birds and eventually humans. • It is light - and blows around. • It is waterproof - and therefore can block waterways • It is convenient – it’s so easy to pick up yet another free bag. • It is hygienic - handy for covering food in the fridge. • It is cheap - so is used everywhere. After watching David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet 2’, many people were aghast at the consequences of all this plastic, but felt powerless to do anything. It is true, that each of us on our own can do very little, but the moment has now arrived for concerted action, at all levels.
Having a local office means we’re never far away if you need us. Call 01751 470293 for a quote or pop in NFU Mutual Branch, Enterprise Way, Thornton Road Business Park, Pickering, North Yorkshire, YO18 7NA Agent of The National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society Limited.
On a personal basis, we can try to use less of the stuff, not accepting single-use plastic bags, straws, coffee cups or buying bottled water. All these actions will help. Any walk along a beach will show you how many pieces of plastic come from domestic use. Many of the products that we buy, we can only buy wrapped in plastic, or are made of plastic. Here the producers and the shops have a role to play. We need to demand plastic free alternatives and reject unnecessary wrapping. We can encourage those shops that use less plastic. Shops that take action will need our support. How did people manage before it was invented? Cloth bags, baskets, paper... We can pressurise government and councils to do more, so that producers all work to the same rules. Governments and big shops are already feeling the pressure, so let’s keep it going. We need to improve recycling for all sorts of plastic, not just bottles. At the moment, many businesses say that because their rubbish is classed as ‘commercial waste’ they cannot recycle. The Blue Planet showed us the marvels of the natural world. Maybe we need to make sure that it continues to flourish by putting ourselves out a tiny amount, otherwise the wonders of nature will merely exist on the television. By Nelly Trevelyan

Spotlight on St Leonard's By Kathryn Craven
Kirkbymoorside and a market stall in Helmsley, both of which were very successful and I look forward to doing this again in the not too distant future. I continue to have a strong presence in the libraries so do pop in to say hello if you are passing. My next article will feature in the December issue. While I always have plenty to write about, please do get in touch if there is anything you would like me to cover in the next issue. See you in December! Hi Everyone, We have had lots of exciting things happening in the Hospice since my last Spotlight on St Leonard’s! The Summer Fair was a great success. It was attended by over 700 people and raised £6600 towards patient care. In July we held our very first Sunflower Art Festival with exhibitions at Helmsley Arts Centre, Pickering Library, the University Of York and York Theatre Royal. Many thanks to the Ryedale artists who supported the festival including Amanda Pickles and Bill Campbell Trotter. A huge thank you also to Helmsley Arts Centre, Pickering Library and Ryedale Lions for their support, enabling the exhibitions to take place. We have enjoyed greatly our charity partnership with Ryedale Festival this year and so thank you to them for choosing St Leonard’s Hospice as their local charity partner. It was wonderful to experience some of the fantastic events that featured across the festival programme, whilst raising vital funds for the Hospice. The weather has been very kind to us overall this year and it’s not over yet! We are very lucky to have a fantastically designed building, allowing us to bring the outside in; from our fish pond that sits in the centre of the Hospice with its floor to ceiling sliding doors, to our In-patient Unit where all rooms have balconies. It makes such a difference that patients and their visitors are allowed this ease of access to the outdoor space and the beautifully landscaped gardens that we all enjoy. I personally have had a great few months meeting with the people of Ryedale. I held a cake sale in
If you’d like any further information on any of these events, are interested in volunteering or would like to know more about the Hospice I would love to hear from you. Kathryn. Craven@stleonardshospice.nhs.uk / 01904 777 777

What does Ryedale Special Families do? By Lisa Keenan, Chief Officer
such support is because having a child (or children) with a disability or additional need is isolating, can be very tiring, is more expensive than for other families, and it can be difficult when you don’t know where to go for help. We have also found that families are less likely to access social and leisure services. RSF make a difference by connecting people with other families, offering services they need for free (where possible) or at a cost they can afford, giving advocacy and guidance on important matters and offering ways of enjoying leisure time together and independently.
Staff and children in Dalby Forest
Since the charity was founded 20 years ago, Ryedale Special Families (RSF) has provided a lifeline of support to over 550 Ryedale-based families with children, young people and young adults who have disabilities, additional needs and illness. The aim of RSF support is to make the lives of the families we work with easier. The reason they require

We also campaign for better services and enable families to do so themselves, in order to keep improving their lives in the future. The services RSF provide have developed over the years from families’ requirements; they include advice, advocacy and emotional support, one to one flexible care, family activities and social groups. RSF have now launched our ‘Get a Move On!’ campaign to raise enough money to buy our own building. The first part of this campaign is to raise £100,000 to get a mortgage on a property. You can donate to this campaign by visiting www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/ryedalesf/ newhome

other. Lots of things have changed since 1997, but our Trustees are all still parents. We have a family centred approach to our work, which is the secret of our success and our families have led the developments we have seen over the years. The demands on our resources are ever-increasing. To provide even more support to families on our doorstep, we need your help. Our current home in Old Malton has served us well but space is limited and the nature of the building means we cannot develop new facilities.
A new base with greater accessibility will result in a better service for the families we support. We want to create more facilities and develop new projects. People have begun fundraising for this campaign by cycling our 2 day Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge, climbing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks and further events are planned for later in the year. There is also a Charity Race Night at Malton School on Friday 31st August run by Malton & Norton Lions. You can find out more details about our work and fundraising by visiting our website www.ryedalespecialfamilies.org.uk Calling 01653 699000 Emailing post@ryedalespecialfamilies.org.uk We are also on facebook and twitter - another way to contact us www.facebook.com/RSFamilies http://twitter.com/PostRSF

hen Charlie Ridgewell was born three months early, he not only needed oxygen for the ďŹ rst year of his life but his complex health needs have impacted every aspect of daily life - both for him and his family - ever since. increase in heart rate, weak lungs and arthritis. This means that unlike other young people his age, Charlie can’t attend college, go out with friends, play sport or be left on his own. It’s been a battle for his family since his birth. But when Charlie was 15 months old, his Mum Heidi got in touch with RSF - and the charity has played a pivotal role in Charlie’s life ever since. “When Charlie was little, RSF was an invaluable support to us as parents. Now Charlie’s older, the charity is there more for him. Essentially, the support started when he was 15 months old and it’s never stopped,” said Heidi. Charlie currently attends RSF’s youth group, the cinema club and summer activities. He has a good group of friends and also has a monthly one-to-one outing with a care worker. RSF has not only supported the family through the various outings and activities. “RSF has also helped with the complicated paperwork trail, hospital appointments and the transition from child to adult services. It’s also provided respite care and stepped in during an emergency,” said Heidi. RSF was also there for Charlie when he recently left college. “I had to drop out of my A-levels. I found it so stressful that I was bed-ridden. But RSF supported me throughout it,” said Charlie, who wants to be a writer and has already been published. No day is without discomfort or pain for Charlie. But RSF has given him things to look forward to. “We could never repay RSF for all they’ve done,” said Heidi. “The support has been huge and without them, our lives would’ve turned out so differently.”

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
Want to know how to avoid dental treatment?
M
any people are perfectly happy with their visits to their dentist, a quick cheap by Christine Parker check up is all they need however BDS (GDC 72136) some patients especially those with more complex dental needs or gum health problems may find themselves being referred onto secondary care or being offered the treatment in house but under private contract. Generally most private dentists can see you more quickly than an NHS Dentist as they often have fewer patients on their list, this also allows them to spend more time with you. Private dentists can use this extra time to really assess your oral health. Factors such as how dry your mouth is , what and when you eat and your brushing habits can all contribute to your oral health risk. Here at Howardian Dental we spend a full hour with each new patient fully assessing these and other factors, our trained oral health educator can often identify small risks which added together can explain why you tend to need treatment. If you want some personalised advice on how to reduce your treatment needs in the future and have a healthier more comfortable mouth then contact Jan and start your journey to better oral health. Many of our patients are saying how they now feel in control of their oral health for the first time in their lives. If you want to learn more please contact Jan at Howardian Dental

An exciting day out JUST OPENED IN PICKERING NEW & USED for horseracing FURNITURE, HOUSEHOLD ITEMS AND MUCH MORE... fans of all ages Malton Festival of Racing (sponsored by Arena Racing Company) is on Sunday 16th September and is a great chance to see behind the scenes at the yards of some of Yorkshire’s best known trainers. Those opening their yard gates to the public this year include Richard Fahey, John Quinn and Tim Easterby to name a few. Visitors will also have the chance to look around one of racing’s crown jewels - the Injured Jockey’s Fund northern rehabilitation centre, Jack Berry House. After meeting racehorses, stable staff and trainers in the morning, there are a wide range of attractions on Highfield Gallops in the afternoon, with something for all the family including a Jockeys’ Relay show jumping competition, Dog Show (open to all) and Terrier Racing, combined with food, drink and shopping stalls. As the organisers of the event, Racing Welfare will be the main beneficiary charity, with a proportion of the funds raised also going to local causes. Racing Welfare provides support to all those in the area who work in, or are retired from, racing. The charity’s regional office at 4 Old Maltongate provides a base for two Welfare Officers as well as safe, secure accommodation for six young people starting out on their careers. Retired racing staff in the Malton area are also well catered for with monthly coffee mornings, trips and outings and the Sporting Memories reminiscence project, all of which aim to prevent loneliness and social isolation within the community. Sarah Fanning, Regional Welfare Manager for the North at Racing Welfare said “The Malton Festival of Racing, is a key event for the horseracing industry in the area. It helps to highlight the success of racing in the area and provides a special opportunity for racing fans and local people to see the hard work that takes place behind the scenes in the sport.” Tickets are on sale at www.maltonfestivalofracing.co.uk (Adults £10, Concessions £7.50, Under 15s Free).

To arrange lectures, exhibitions and social events of historical and archaeological interest. The group currently have around 60 members and new members are always welcome. The lecture programme begins in September with a break over Christmas and continues until the AGM in May. Lectures are held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Library at Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton, YO17 7NH. Friends also form the bedrock of the Museum volunteers, providing collections care, front of house and outreach support. The roles are varied. Currently volunteers are collecting oral histories and compiling town trails. One of the Friends main objectives is to provide financial support for specific Museum projects. In 2015 Friends donated £1,000 to the Museum towards the forthcoming ‘Malton Goes to Market’ project and in 2016 a contribution of £200 was made towards the cost of printing the Museum’s first children’s trail leaflets. In 2017 Friends donated £1,700 towards the publication of the “Malton Goes to Market - Recipe Book” which continues to generate funds for museum projects. In May, Friends agreed to a request to provide £1000 of matching funding to support the latest Milton Rooms bid for support from the Big Lottery, which if successful, will enhance the museum premises. So why not become a Friend and make new friends, enjoy our lectures and have the opportunity of joining one of our many ongoing projects! The annual subscription which covers six lectures and two newsletters is: Adults: £10. Students/Senior Citizens £9. Life membership: £75 If you think you may be interested in joining, why not come to the first lecture of the 2018/19 season on 19th September - “The Flying Scotsman” a lecture by Bob Gwynne, Associate Curator, Collections and Research, National Railway Museum. A call to 01653 628982 advising you would like to attend would be much appreciated.

Charity Brass By Cliff Hicks Charity Brass was conceived in the Autumn of 2017. It was decided to set up a small group of players to fill what was believed to be a niche. A full brass band is sometimes limited because of size constraints and concerts in hostels and nursing homes prove difficult to fulfil. A small group of seven (sometimes eight) can fit into these spaces with ease and thus the concept arose. The name Charity Brass seemed appropriate because the group’s remit is basically to support the community. There are many local groups needing funds and many of them do make an effort and set up fundraising events for their cause. Charity Brass does like to see this effort and consequently is prepared to support such events by performing for zero fees. Charity Brass is charitable in two ways, namely: 1) Playing for no fee; and 2) Donating funds to causes. How does this second part work? Well, Charity Brass asks permission to put out collection tubs during performance and our audience are free (no pressure) to support if they wish. Profit from these tubs goes into a Charity Fund and is distributed to those who have a genuine need. Charity Brass has already fulfilled nine gigs bringing music, to the public, simply under the heading of ‘Easy Listening’. There are still five more gigs to do before the end of Summer.

Paul continues, ‘Aside from doing a quality job, a vital
part of our service is showing our customers respect. It’s the small things, like turning up on time, cleaning up after ourselves and of course a warm Yorkshire greeting on every doorstep’. The fantastic savings are made by replacing only the glass panes and not the expensive frames. Cloud 9 offer a tailored approach to each customer considering the best options available. Summer shade Major Matthew Bennett, Malton Salvation Army North Yorkshire has been blessed with beautiful sunshine this year, with record temperatures being recorded across the UK. No need to take your sun cream abroad – it will be needed just where you are. Summer brings joy to many, but we are told to be careful. That is: ensure you and your family are drinking enough water and are protected from the rays. Slip, slop, slap! We have been wary of the sun for thousands of years; the Bible is filled with stories of Kings and Rulers who employed people to stand beside them and shade them from the heat. Also, in The Bible, is Psalm 121 which seems particularly relevant to this season: The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. (Psalm 121:5-6, NIV) Keeping in mind that Psalm 121 was written especially for pilgrims or travellers, it seems applicable wherever you travel during these summer months. It speaks of the Lord’s care for us and describes how he will stand by you and shade you from the worst. The sun and the moon in this psalm represent the troubles and ‘heat’ that may come your way. The Salvation Army is committed to coming alongside people to help them through life’s troubles and this is more important than ever during periods of extreme weather. Therefore, if you are fortunate enough to be enjoying the summer, remember, in times of rising homelessness and poverty there are many who could benefit from your time and donations. Amid the heat, is there someone you can help? May you know God’s presence in every step you take and destination you reach. Happy holidays!

Heatwave By The Pastoral Poet The recent Summer heatwave, Was hotter in the breeze, Men in undecided shorts, Showed off their knobbly knees. The temperature in Yorkshire, Was hotter than the Med. The grass was turning browner, The lawn mower in the shed. Attracted like a magnet, Sunbathers out in legions, Administering sunblock, To all their tender regions. Others in their gardens, Adorned in floppy hats. Awash with fly repellent, To ward of clegs and gnats. Train services disrupted, Because of warping metal. Hardy weeds were wilting, The thistle and the nettle. Water use restriction, The usual hose-pipe ban. At night, to keep us cool in bed, An oscillating fan. It seems we’re never satisfied, The weather’s never right. A drop of rain would do some good, If it would fall at night. And as the sun kept blazing, An ever burning ember, I know one thing is certain, It’s better than November.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Can you spare a bit of time to help us save the lives of more local unwanted and abandoned dogs? Our volunteers have had a busy summer fundraising and are all worn out so we need some new volunteers to help our great team! Could you spare a morning to run a fundraising stall, help in one of our pop up charity shops or organise one of your own fundraising or sponsor events for us? We have a monthly meeting in Malton for all volunteers - old and new and details of future events can be found on our Facebook page. Why not come and join our friendly team? DOG OF THE MONTH: CASSIE, BORDER COLLIE Cassie is approximately 18 months old. She came into the
rescue very nervous and although she has gained confidence she is still wary of new people and situations. However, no matter how frightened she has been she has never shown any aggression. Cassie is intelligent and very good with dogs. She needs someone who is patient and prepared to visit her a few times to gain her confidence prior to adoption. If you’d like to find out more about this lovely girl, please call us. FUTURE EVENTS: Second Saturday of every month Our monthly coffee morning at Wells Lane, Malton Sunday 26th August We have a fundraising stall at Thornton le Dale Scarecrow Festival

1. Salt: horses do not self-regulate their salt intake even if given free access to salt blocks. All leisure and competition horses need additional salt in their diet to meet their daily requirements. For most horses the addition of 10g salt per 100kg to their daily ration will meet their needs for maintenance and light work. For horses in harder work the addition of electrolytes will be required to meet electrolyte losses as a result of sweating. There is not enough salt in compound feeds to meet daily requirements. 2. Cooling horses: it is perfectly fine to pour cold water all over a hot horse after exercise; keep applying water until it is coming off cold. The heat will transfer from the horse to the water and then the water will evaporate and further cool the horse. 3. Drinking after exercise: it is perfectly safe for horses to drink after exercise, in fact they are most likely to drink immediately following cessation of exercise. Drinking before, during and after exercise is to be encouraged in order to prevent your horse from dehydrating. 4. Feeding before exercise: it is fine to feed a horse before exercise; in fact a double handful of an alfalfa based chop in the 30mins prior to exercise is ideal to top-up the food raft in the stomach and help to minimise any splashing of gastric acid onto the poorly protected squamous mucosa and reduce the risk of ulceration. 5. Iron: iron rich supplements are often used as an ‘energy boost’ or to ‘improve red blood cell numbers’ as a ‘tonic’, etc. Iron deficiency in the UK is actually very rare, with many horses actually being over-supplemented. Once a horse has taken in excess iron, it is very difficult for it to excrete it and iron toxicity actually occurs at very low levels. Iron is a pro-oxidant and increases oxidative stress and inflammation within the body. Iron does not boost energy, it does not improve red blood cell numbers, it will not correct anaemia unless it is due to high volume blood loss, and iron excess can decrease absorption of other minerals.

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease in Rabbits by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
V
iral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) is extremely contagious, usually fatal. Death of the rabbit will occur in a short period of time 12-36 hours after first sign of fever. VHD has an incubation period of 1-3 days. There are two strains of RVHD, known as RVHD1 and RVHD2. Both strains are lethal and you must vaccinate to protect your rabbits. RVHD2 has been in the UK since 2013 and since then has overtaken the classic RVHD as the primary strain. Both strains of RVHD are spread by both direct contact with infected rabbits, or indirectly via their urine or faeces. Transmission is quick and doesn’t require prolonged contact it can be passed from one to another, via faecal matter of an infected rabbit. But the main carriers of this disease are, insects, flies, birds and rodents. The virus may be blown on the wind. You might bring the virus home on your feet, or your other pets’ feet (or car wheels) from infected wild rabbit droppings. You could bring the virus home on your hands or clothes. The viruses can survive for months in the environment, and are terrifyingly easy to bring home to your pets. They survive cold very well. In a rabbit suffering an acute form of VHD, one of the first clinical signs is a high fever. Other symptoms include; • Loss of appetite (anorexia) • Lethargy • Breathing difficulties • Bloodstained discharge from the nose or mouth • Convulsions • Incoordination and staggered movements However, in many situations the first sign is unfortunately sudden death. Sadly there is, as yet no cure for VHD. Rabbits suffering from VHD will die and in many cases death can occur without any signs. Any that do happen to survive remain carriers so need to be kept away from other rabbits and animals. As there is not cure, prevention is the way to safeguard your rabbit from VHD
Vaccinations can be given from 6 weeks of age and need to have a booster annually to maintain protection. It is important to note that the standard combo vaccine including RHD and Myxomatosis, does not offer immunity against RHD-2 strain. At Battle Flatts we offer a separate vaccine which can be given 2 weeks after the first, to protect against RHD-2. This should also be boosted annually. Vaccinations are only available from your veterinary surgeon and are extremely effective at preventing rabbits contracting VHD. Sadly in recent weeks here at Battle Flatts we have seen several cases of VHD in rabbits and are urging all rabbit owners to get their rabbits vaccinated against this fatal disease. Please contact your nearest Surgery for more information.

New Lease Of Life For Thornton Le Dale Christmas Lights The Thornton le Dale Annual Christmas Lights Display and Switch-On Event is a 27 year tradition that recently faced the threat of being discontinued, until The Big Lottery Fund, Ryedale District Council, North Yorkshire Council and the North York Moors Planning Authority, together, secured the future of the event, by providing funding totalling £14,625 and planning permission with a 10 year lease, to enable the purchase and siting of their own equipment storage facility. In 2015 the future of the christmas lights was threatened with losing the donated use of two equipment storage barns within the village. In 2016 the village was very close to not having christmas lights at all, when the search for replacement, available and affordable storage space drew a blank. Fortunately, a local business provided a lifeline by offering two years temporary storage, free of charge, that enabled the Lights Committee to launch the project to “acquire their own equipment storage facility”. During 2017 the concept of a specially adapted, ‘portable’ storage structure, suitable to be sited in a central location within the village, was developed with help and advice from the North York Moors National Park Planning Authority. A subsequent planning Application was approved, and a 10 year lease was granted. However, the total cost of the finished project, was an eye watering £19,000!
now been delivered. A special crane lifted the unit over the grade II listed heritage wall into position, to complete the project and enable equipment from this years’ Switch-On Event on Saturday 1st December and subsequently the lights display, to be dismantled straight into our own 300sqft equipment storage facility. The future of the Thornton le Dale Christmas Lights is now much brighter, however there is still one ongoing challenge. The Village Constitution describes The Christmas Lights as being “By the Village – for the Village” and because volunteers are mostly of retirement age, new volunteers are constantly needed to compliment the cycle of aging senior volunteers. Work parties commence on Tuesday 2nd October. If you are interested, please email David Mitchell on hm1910ef1912@ btinternet.com for more information or to join what is probably the best volunteer Christmas lights display in the North East!

Fundraising began early in 2018. Councillor Janet Sanderson, approached the Community Officers at Ryedale District Council and North Yorkshire Council, which resulted in grant aid of £3,000 and £1,645 respectively. With the support of the same Community Officers, The Lights Committee successfully applied for and were awarded £10,000 from The Big Lottery Fund’s Awards4All program. The balance of £4,355 has been funded by The Lights Volunteer’s fundraising activities, with the welcomed ongoing support from other community groups including Village and Traders, Village Hall, Toddlers Group, Women’s Institute, Thornton Le Dale School and the Parish Council. The specially adapted portable storage unit has
