elcome to the August edition. August comes with much tolook-forward-to expectation, but it can also be a challenging month, especially when you run a small business and have a family. So many balls to be juggled, with children off school, the house and garden to work on, and the business needs ever-needy. The monthly cycle of magazine deadlines still go on relentless – deep breath! Finding stuff for children to do that keeps them occupied and leaves you feeling less guilty for having to work is difficult – and curiously more so as they get older. But there is much to do in our local areas. Maybe blackberry picking could provide an option, though not for the whole month! Blackberries. Yum! I’m guessing our wet summers could be good for juicy fruit. There must be an upside to this weather. They always taste best eaten outside straight off the plant. The fate of a blackberry from picking to pudding rarely exceeds 50%. And besides, when we’ve managed to bring lots home, they tend to end up in the freezer for an indefinite period. Last year I did try making jam with some of the fruit, but it was best described as a first attempt – and not a great one! I read somewhere that blackberry picking is a dying

pastime. In this current climate (there’s a phrase I’ve heard a lot recently) why not get out and about and pick some tasty and nutritious free food! More seriously, there is an article this month about Yorkshire Air Ambulance. I had no idea that the service had no central funding at all and is entirely run on donations. Our two air ambulances serve a population of approximately five million people across four million hectares and yet whenever a patient is carried in an ambulance, they will only be ten minutes from the nearest hospital or fifteen minutes from the most appropriate treatment centre. See ways you can help on page 47. Well I hope you manage a break during August and here’s hoping that summer will arrive sometime soon. We haven’t even managed a garden barbeque yet this year! National Rabbit Awareness Campaign

his issue we are going to focus on rabbits as domestic pets. In recent years the number of rabbits being kept as pets has increased dramatically such that they are now the third most popular pet in the UK.

With their increasing numbers has come better knowledge and understanding of their needs and how best to keep them as pets which has meant that their life expectancy has also increased with many rabbits now living 8-10 years. Rabbits can be kept as both indoor or outdoor pets and they adapt well to either situation as long as their basic needs are met. These include plenty of room to exercise with “bolt-holes” to hideaway in if startled and a diet that is high in fibre, the majority of their nutrition coming from hay or grass with a small amount of a commercial dry diet and some fresh vegetables as well. Some of the main health problems rabbits encounter can come from poor management and diet. The main one of these is dental problems due to not having enough fibre in the diet. This is because they have teeth which grow continually and can then overgrow and cause problems if they are not chewing on enough fibre on a daily basis. Poor diet and not enough exercise can also lead to obesity. Rabbits need to have their bottoms checked regularly, at least daily during the summer, to ensure they are not getting faeces matted around the back end which is often another problem resulting from being overweight as they can’t reach round to keep themselves clean. In warmer weather flies are attracted to any faeces in the coat and will lay eggs in it, the maggots that then develop can cause very serious problems very quickly and need urgent veterinary attention. Keeping rabbits together in pairs is a good idea as they are sociable creatures and the pairing that often works best is to keep a male and female together, however one or both of them will need neutering to prevent being overrun by rabbits very quickly! Preventative healthcare is becoming increasingly available for rabbits too and this includes vaccinations against the major infectious diseases they face, myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease, and also worming preparations. As the popularity of rabbits as pets increases, so does the need for education and awareness of their needs and what is involved in owning them. As a result, several organisations including vets, animal charities, welfare organisations and feed companies have clubbed together to organise the National

Rabbit Awareness Week. This event is held annually and is designed to promote better understanding of issues involved with rabbit ownership and health. Hello again, Whilst you’re sat at home reading my column for this month, with your cup of tea and Facebook page open, I’l be over 7000 miles away lugging my over-full pack to the top of the second highest mountain in Africa: Mount Kenya. For those of you who haven’t decided to cook yourselves in Africa as I have; I hope you have (or have had) a fantastic summer holiday, whether you camped in Scotland for the weekend or sunbathed in Greece for a fortnight. The majority of my other summers have been spent in beautiful countryside in the most remote parts of England... camping... in the rain... As much as I complain – and have complained - the worst holidays I have been on in fact make the best stories. Still today, we laugh about our camping ‘ADVENTURES!’ No matter how lovely our few hot holidays have been, the family always talks about sleeping in the tent that we moaned so much about. My favourite family tale so far has to be the time we went down to Cornwall... We had just driven for over six hours with three frustrated teenagers cramped in the backseat with the sleeping bags, duvet, and a few suitcases thrown in for good luck when we drove past the village sign all still half asleep and in desperate need of a leg stretch. The designated map-reader then fumbled around trying to find our campsite, at which time my mum decided to announce that the tent poles were not, in fact, in our car, but back home in the loft. At 8 in the evening, SIX hours too late! In the end we bought a new tent and made more room in the car – you can imagine our ridiculously squished journey home! Still we tell that story four years later. And still it makes us laugh... See you next month,

didn’t think I was the competitive type, but I could be wrong. I have a so called friend, who said, ‘Those who are losing weight wear their shirts tucked in, and those who are gaining weight wear their shirts out!’ As you can guess, he has recently lost a considerable amount of weight and well, my shirt was not tucked in! He has lost almost 6 stone, a remarkable achievement, but he did make me feel a little inadequate and for the first time I felt overweight and perhaps I ought to start taking better care of myself! How quickly we compare ourselves and compete with each other, it feels great when we can see we have the edge, but when we are the clear loser we can soon become discouraged. The world’s greatest competitive stage is set, the Olympic Games 2012. During the Olympics, the best in the world will compete for gold. Each athlete, after years of dedicated training and focus, will push themselves for a personal best or a new world record. Their greatest motivation will be the opportunity to beat their closest rival and to be the pride of their home nation. 17,000 athletes from 205 countries will go for one of 302 gold medals that are on offer, so sadly many athletes will go home empty handed but satisfied knowing they have done their best, ran their race and fulfilled the purpose of all their hard work. I’m not sporty, hopefully I have other qualities, but sport is not one of them. However, I do believe we all have a race to run. Not a race in competition with anyone else, but a personal race. In the Bible we are encouraged to ‘run with perseverance the race marked out for us’. Eric Liddell, the subject of the film, Chariots of Fire famously said, ‘I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.’ In the 1924 Paris Olympics, Eric Liddell refused to run on a Sunday but went on to win the men’s 400m before becoming a missionary to China. What is your purpose? What is the race marked out for you? Run with perseverance, it’s not about beating anyone else or who’s watching, it’s about finishing and finishing well! What’s mine is mine! You’ll have heard the UK has technically entered into the dreaded “double dip” recession. You can’t have missed the headlines – bad news is the media’s life blood.

Now I’m a straight talking person, renowned for calling a spade a spade. And I’m very suspicious of statistics. (Lies, damned lies!) This dubious number crunching that leads to this conclusion comes from The Office of National Statistics. And they often get the numbers wrong. I prefer to make my judgements on what I see going on around me. I was in London a couple of weeks ago, staying near “The Shard” – a new building costing £450 million. That’s a lot of wonga to spend at any time let alone in a recession. Unemployment numbers look weird as well. The number of jobs is expanding faster than the number of people in employment. This doesn’t feel like stuff that should be happening in a recession. Unemployment figures are actually healthier than the headline figures appear because they reflect the shedding of jobs in the public sector. This job culling was a very necessary and long overdue move, in my view, and hasn’t gone nearly far enough. Many hundreds of these “jobs for the boys” are better paid than the Prime Minister. I can’t figure out what most of these bozos actually do. The Financial Ombudsman Service recently advertised for an “Engagement Champion” on forty grand a year, who’s job was - wait for it – “to help our people feel they want to come to work.” Eh? I thought that’s what a pay packet did? It gets better – the holder of this “job” reports to the

“Head of Content and Engagement”. So, they have a whole raft of these jobsworths making sure “our people feel they want to come to work.” The Money Advice Service, which money expert Martin Lewis describes as “bland, boring and unnecessary“, pay their chief £350,000 a year. £350,000!! The Financial Services Authority – the organisation that has responsibility for financial stability in the UK (they did a great job, obviously!) spend over half a million quid on “hospitality”. Just who do regulators have to wine and dine? The banks? Don’t get me started on banks. These “pillars of our community” who pocket OUR bail out money and then have the gall to hand out in bonuses the billions of pounds which is supposed to be lent out to businesses to get the economy back on its feet, whilst all the while manipulating the interest rates to their own ends. Jeez, you couldn’t make this stuff up. And to cap it all, most of the FSA senior executives ran away before this particular scandal emerged. Nice work boys (and girls!) And guess who’s paying for all this nonsense? Yes, YOU. The painful truth is that your money is under attack from all angles. If you’ve got it – they’re gonna tax it. Inheritance Tax, Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, paying for elderly care. It goes on and on. People waste billions of pounds in unnecessary tax every year. HOME-MADE BURGERS It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious homemade char-grilled burgers. Follow these top tips for the best burgers around…

Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince. Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like. You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too. A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together or use clean hands to mix as thoroughly as possible. Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wetted hands. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked. Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the

middle. To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes. If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw. Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.

f you’re going on holiday shortly, don’t forget that your garden and plants will appreciate some TLC before you leave. An hour or two spent sorting out your plants can not only help to keep them going whilst you’re sunning yourself elsewhere, but also help to make your house look less abandoned in your absence. So before you grab a suitcase, make sure you spend some time in the garden. I’m certainly not a lawn buff, but whether your lawn is your priority, or like me it’s more of a patch of grass than a bowling green, sort it out before you go. Give it a thorough mowing, cutting it as short as you dare but without ‘scalping’ it by cutting too low. Next take a pair of lawn edging shears, a halfmoon edger or simply a sharp spade and neaten all the edges, including those next to flower beds. The effect of edging lasts far longer than mowing and will not only stop the lawn moving into the flower beds, but also make the grass appear more recently

It really is worth persuading a friend, relative or neighbour to pop in to your garden and do the odd bit of watering. Make sure to suggest that they pick the sweet-peas, harvest some veg and so forth, then you’ll both benefit. A good, thorough watering of the garden will mean that plants in open ground should be unharmed by hot weather for a good while. Plants in pots and tubs are totally reliant on you if there is not much rain, so make these your priority, and tell your plant-sitter where all the containers are, especially those out of sight. Many plants cease flowering if faded flowers are left on them and allowed to start to form seeds. This means it’s extra important to remove every faded bloom before you leave. If you’re off for more than a week, I suggest ‘dead heading’ not only the faded flowers, but also those which are just starting to fade. A sharp pair of scissors or just your finger and thumb should do the trick. Hanging baskets are invariably in the hottest, sunniest pots in the garden and with their roots up in the air they are especially prone to drought. Unless you have a really reliable watering helper lined up, it’s best to carefully lower hanging baskets and stand each one on its own pot in a shady spot where it will dry out less quickly.

HOMES & GARDENS Planters and patio pots lose moisture very readily especially if the weather is hot, windy or, worse, a combination of both. By carefully grouping the pots together in one place you’ll not only make it easier for your holiday helper to find them all, but will also create shade around the roots of the pots, so reducing the risk of drought and heat damage. Try to position more drought tolerant patio plants such as pelargoniums, towards the outer edge of the group, and more drought prone plants towards the cooler centre of the group. Make sure that your garden sheds and other storage areas are properly secured so that there’s less chance that any light-fingered guests will burgle your belongings. It’s worth giving the padlock keys to a neighbour, just in case there is anything in the shed that might be needed in your absence. Ladders, mattocks, spades and other gardening items that could be used to break into your house (or the shed) should be removed completely, or locked away out of sight so that they don’t encourage burglary. Finally check that plants are healthy and that any new outbreaks of pests or diseases are treated or dealt with before you go - leave a handful of whitefly in your greenhouse, or a few greenfly on your roses, and there may well be a full-scale disaster zone when you return!

Crop circle season

It’s August, and although the crop circle season is nearing its end, now is the best time to go out and see what delights the Andy Goldsworthys of the skies have left us to marvel at this year.

Actually, crop circles “appear” around the world whenever and wherever there’s a standing crop. But with a fair chance of decent weather and the kids on holiday and needing some diversion, August may be the right month to go and see one, perhaps as part of a day out in the country which might include a pub lunch. An awful lot of crop circles “appear” in the Stonehenge area. I say “appear” in quotation marks because of course the contentiousness about them is how they’re made, or more especially who or what they’re made by: freak weather, outer space visitors or human pranksters. Crop circles have been reported since the 17th century, and the first investigation of their cause, in Surrey in 1880, put them down to “cyclonic wind action”, extraterrestrials having not yet been thought of. From the 1970s, though, they were reported more and more often, attracting more media attention and more theories about their origin. I needn’t go into detail, but by 1991 there was a large body of opinion that they were the work of UFOs or their occupants. Unfortunately for the UFO theorists, in that year a couple of blokes called Doug Brewer and Dave Chorley claimed to have made most if not all of them using nothing more sophisticated than a plank and a length of rope, and were more than happy to be filmed doing so. Since then there have been crop circle competitions. There’s even a group called Circlemakers that specialises in creating ever more intricate patterns and, like Doug and Dave, is happy to be filmed doing it. But it takes more than a video of a couple of guys with a plank and a length of rope to convince the UFO theorists and they can point to lots of anomalies that suggest that Doug, Dave and their successors didn’t create all of the crop circles in the world; but then, we don’t know who painted all of the paintings in the world, but that’s no reason to suggest that extraterrestrials did! I don’t really care whether it was a couple of blokes or alien astronauts: my point is, crop circles are beautiful and they serve no practical purpose - to me that makes them art. etting help fast after an injury or sudden illness can literally be a matter of life and death.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s two helicopters have helped thousands of people over the years, by giving fast medical attention on the scene and carrying them to treatment centres. As well as saving lives the YAA’s fast, smooth ride to hospital can make a big difference in recovery from, for example, spinal injuries. Both of the Air Ambulances weigh no more than a family car and move at up to 160mph – which means wherever you are in Yorkshire they can be with you in a matter of minutes. They serve more than five million people, flying 365 days a year. They are based at Leeds Bradford Airport and a new permanent home at RAF Topcliffe, where they are well placed to serve Ryedale and North Yorkshire; at the time of writing, they reported they’d flown to four incidents in the Malton area within a week. The most common types of incident attended by the air ambulance are traffic, cycling and horse riding accidents and sudden illness such as strokes and heart attacks. The YAA is a charity, relying entirely on donations to keep operating – and their costs run to £7,200 per day. The second helicopter was bought after Richard Hammond’s accident at the Elvington airfield near

York in 2006, prompted an upsurge in support for the YAA which raised more than £250,000. That was used as a deposit on a loan to buy a second air ambulance. The air ambulance relies on fundraisers and donors completely, and there are lots of ways of offering support. Volunteer roles with the YAA include working as a steward, a fundraiser or giving talks about the YAA to groups. You can also book a YAA speaker to come and talk to your community, professional or social group to find out more about the air ambulance’s work. Occasionally, the air ambulance itself makes an appearance at an event. You can find out when it will be in your area by visiting the website, and clicking the ‘helicopter visits’ link on the right-hand side. Or, you can help raise money to keep the air ambulance flying. Consider these ways:

BMW M5 (2012) BMW likes to do efficiency these days. That means big, brash and loud is out and in its place comes clever use of technology to excite drivers. That means big changes for the marque’s loudest cars, like the M5. The 5.0-litre V10 of the previous generation has been killed off, and in its place is a smaller 4.4-litre V8.

efore you become too upset though, things aren’t as bad as they seem. Yes, the powerplant may have lost a few cylinders and cubic capacity, but thanks to a brace of turbochargers this new lump is actually more powerful and more efficient (there’s that word again) than the engine it replaces. How much more? Well, power is up 10 per cent to 560bhp and torque increased by a whopping 30 per cent to 680Nm. Ok, so that’s a little off the Merc’s 800Nm of pull, but still mighty impressive. It all helps the new M5 hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and crack on to 155 mph. Equally impressive is the improvements at the pumps – fuel economy is up from 20mpg to 28mpg while emissions have been slashed 112g/km to 234g/km. A major achievement. But to be honest, we don’t really care about the latter. What we really care about is whether it feels as good as the V10? And the simple answer is no – it’s better. There’s no denying the M5 is a big car, but it feels the smallest, most compact here. It’s easy to jump in and drive – and drive fast. It’s flattering on the road, and hugely exciting on the track. With the traction control engaged, there’s just enough slip to put a grin on your face, yet save you from the kitty litter. With it off, it’s a tail out showboater. That 4.4-litre engine sounds

brilliant too. Like a mini Bugatti Veyron it angrily sucks in air and spits out a venomous bark from its quad pipes. Equally thrilling is its rapid DCT sevenspeed gearbox. Far superior to the Merc’s set up, this twin clutch box fires through ratios with a ferocity only seen before on a Ferrari 458. Inside it feels a lot more modern than the Mercedes – its closest rival here – with brilliant seats, a superb driving position and wonderfully direct and supple steering. Tech levels are understandably high for a £73k car with a head up display, DAB radio, 19-inch alloys, night vision and lots more. But it’s not the kit or space that puts the Beemer in the number one spot here – it’s the driving experience. This is one mighty M model that’s simple to jump in and drive fast. Masses of electronic trickery help, but that absolute peach of an engine (BMW’s most potent

ever, no less), that visceral noise and that smile you’ll find hard to wipe off your face every time you drive it, help it secure the top spot.

VerdicT: it has BMW’s most potent powerplant ever, sounds amazing and is as easy to drive as a 520d.
