elcome to the August edition…
This month I have an apology for those of you who tried to book tickets for events at Helmsley Arts Centre and instead got through to a very confused policeman in Wales! Unfortunately there was one incorrect digit in the phone number which made it the number for Dyfed Powys Police – we are not popular! We do try and check everything but obviously I had brain freeze last month! I hope you eventually managed to find tickets and enjoyed the performances. Summer holidays will have arrived by the time you receive this. Oh how I’m looking forward to some time out. Mind you, I do find that it takes me a while to stop rushing around and stressing and by the time I do its usually time to come home again! Still a break will be good. August is a time for festivals and Ella has some good advice for those of us whose teenagers are going for the first time this year. Locally the fantastic Galtres Festival is coming to Duncombe Park and is an opportunity for the whole family to

experience a great weekend of bands, cabaret, food and drink. Here at the Handy Mag we’d like to wish Thornton le Dale good luck with their second scarecrow festival this year. When I used to deliver the Handy Mag through doors myself, it always used to amaze me how much was missed by simply driving through the centre of villages such as Thornton le Dale. The scarecrow trail is an opportunity to have a walk around this beautiful village and help raise much needed funds for the village hall and other local projects. Welcome to Mrs Atkinson of Pickering for winning the June competition. Until next month…

PAINTING A ROSY PICTURE OF HOME Where do you find a painter and decorator who’s as passionate about your home style as you are?
Richard is an apprentice trained
decorator, having spent 4 years at college learning his trade. He has 35 years experience working with some of the country’s best decorators up and down the UK and in thousands of homes and businesses, as well as well-known country estates. Job satisfaction is crucial to Richard, which is why the work he does is high quality workmanship. He says: “I like to work with people who think of their house as their pride and joy, because that’s how I feel about my work. I like a job to look absolutely amazing when it’s finished.” Most of Richard’s work comes through recommendation – he often returns to a single customer regularly, and it’s not uncommon for him to spend some months working for neighbours living in the same cul-de-sac, as word about his quality, good manner and competitive prices spreads. He’s well trusted by his customers, and if you’d prefer to give him the key while you’re at work or on holiday and avoid the hassle and disruption of having the decorators in, plenty of his customers have done that in the past, with complete peace of mind. Richard’s long experience means he can give lots of advice on what colours, styles and fixtures will work in a particular room, or how you can achieve the effect you want. For a reliable local decorator, call Richard now on 01653 693161 or visit his website to view examples of his work.

Over the last 36 years, Town and Country Fires has specialised in manufacturing and retailing multifuel stoves, wood burning stoves and a comprehensive wood fuel stove range at great prices. As one of the very few stove specialists to make the stoves from start to finish they have designed and perfected the combustion in
their models to out-perform the world’s leading brands. Their expertise in this industry, using a combination of traditional and modern techniques, has led them to develop some of the best wood burning stoves and multifuel stoves worldwide with certified efficiency rates of up to 84%. In addition, the stoves comply with EN 13240 2001, have been awarded the C.E. mark and are Hetas approved – independent proof of their quality.

One of Britain’s leading manufacturers of multi-fuel stoves - extremely efficient and clean burning. Country Fires are proud to be working with Jolly Mec, an Italian family firm with 40 years of experience in the design and production of heating systems, to supply biomass fuelled heating systems to the area. Currently Town and Country Fires are the only place in the UK that you can find this leading biomass technology from Jolly Mec.

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
The Private Patient By PD James At a private clinic in Dorset, Rhoda Gradwyn has booked an operation to remove a serious facial scar – one which she has borne for many years, but ‘no longer has need of.’ The operation is a success, but by morning Rhoda Gradwyn is dead, and suspicion falls on the staff of Cheverell Manor. Commander Adam Dalgliesh, poet and policeman, is summoned from London to investigate, and before long finds himself dealing with not one, but two unexplained deaths and a whole host of dark secrets. This is the latest in James’ Dalgliesh series, and it bears all the familiar hallmarks of the earlier novels – a death in a closed community, a complicated back story, and a steady move to the conclusion. As ever, the supporting characters are just as important as Dalgliesh himself – both those on his team and those who inhabit Cheverell Manor – and they are deftly drawn, with real and believable traits. For the reader, the experience is more about contemplation than guesswork – the identity of the killer is revealed three quarters of the way through, and the rest of the novel is concerned with motivation and moral dilemmas. There is also a significant amount of tying up of loose ends from the ongoing stories of Dalgliesh and his colleagues, and the ending is rich and reflective. Some would argue that James’ novels are an acquired taste, being so far from the run of the mill ‘whodunnit’ – I would say they are a taste well worth the acquiring.

The Family from One End Street By Eve Garnett This 1930’s classic has recently been re-issued as a Puffin Modern Classic, and rightly so. Telling the story of Mr and Mrs Ruggles and their seven children, it has captivated children for many years and will do so for many more. This is the first in Garnett’s series and introduces the family – Dad Jo, Mum Rosie and the children: Lily Rose, Kate, twins Jim and John, young Jo, Peg and baby William. The first chapter tells us how they all got their names and sets the scene, then each subsequent section details one of their many adventures. All of the Ruggles have an uncanny knack for getting into scrapes – from Lily Rose’s attempt to help her mother with a customer’s washing, which doesn’t go to plan, to the tale of clever Kate’s lost grammar school hat, and the daring escapades of Jim and John. The book ends with ‘The Perfect Day’ at the Cart Horse parade in London, riding on Uncle Charlie’s dust cart. Each episode is beautifully illustrated with Garnett’s line drawings. This may not be the most fashionable or up to date novel, but it has stood the test of time. Any reader will find much to enjoy, but particularly girls age 8 and over will take the Ruggles to their hearts and perhaps wish for the freedom and fun enjoyed by the children in days long gone.

n Saturday 21st September 2013 four UK firefighters will attempt an endurance run to the 225 fire houses in the 5 boroughs of New York. The team will start at the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation HQ on Staten Island, and then run through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan & the Bronx. In order to achieve this, we expect to be running for 7 days and running an average of 30miles per day. As this is the first time that the event has been done, it is regarded stateside as being a ‘World Record Attempt’! The team are all serving members of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and have completed several endurance running events in the past including pulling a 100kg trailer from London to York and last year running with the same trailer from coast to coast following the Trans - Pennine trail. These events have raised £1000’s for various charities and the challenge in New York is another opportunity to raise funds. The charities which will receive funds from this event are the Fire-fighter’s Charity, Macmillan Cancer Trust in the UK and when in the USA

As this is the first time that the event has been done, it is regarded stateside as being a ‘World Record Attempt’! Squad 1, who returned to duty on 9/11 and headed towards the World Trade Centre when they were attacked. Stephen was prohibited from entering the Brooklyn Tunnel in his truck so he raced on foot towards the site with 60lbs of gear strapped to his back. He was last seen on West and Liberty Street where he, more than likely, went looking for his squad, all of whom perished. The Tunnel To Towers Run retraces Stephens’s footsteps on that fateful day. We are a self funding team, however we have been kindly
sponsored by North Yorkshire based company McKecknie Rosti to assist with the cost of the flights. Sweatshop Running & Whitby Seafoods are kindly supplying the team with running kit. The Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation are assisting the team with logistical support. The team are currently training hard both individually and together. We complete team runs each month and these will soon include back to back marathons around city centre locations with the aim of replicating the terrain and the distance that we will experience. YOUR BEDROOM – YOUR CHOICE
B
edrooms are often the place we go to relax and escape from our hectic lives. Father and son team, Steve and Jodie Calladene, can help you transform your furniture and décor to make yours a perfect sanctuary. Calladene’s Interiors offer a wide range of bedrooms to suit any taste. In fact, there are over 300 style variations available, meaning that whatever your inspiration, there will be something for you in their range from traditional classics to chic modern lines. Whilst the bedrooms are superb quality, prices are always lower than the big brands as Calladene’s have no shop overheads or backroom staff. Whether you are just starting out and want to freshen up your first bedroom or are looking for a complete refurbishment, Steve and Jodie can provide a service for all budgets. Steve says “We come to you. This means that you can look at the range in your own home and make the right choices for your room. We take time to talk
through customer’s requirements, produce a computer generated design showing what your room will look like, and then leave you to make the decision in your own time.” The most important value Steve and Jodie live by when it comes to customer service is behaving with integrity and they genuinely care about their customers and homes. They will always put your wishes first; it is after all your room. And they have all the necessary experience to guide you through from design to completion of your project. Steve said: “I believe in treating people the way I would expect them to treat me, and with that philosophy I don’t think you can go far wrong.”
Jodie added: “On any project, you will be dealing with just the two of us and we will also be doing the work. We provide a comprehensive service including re-decoration if required, so you don’t waste time having to wait for a decorator, who’s waiting for a plasterer, who’s waiting for an electrician, who’s holding everything up.” Calladene’s don’t stop there as they can also design and fit kitchens and studies and are specialists in fitting Karndean, laminate and solid wood flooring. For a no obligation chat about your new bedroom or kitchen project, call the local family team at Calladene’s Interiors.

ELLA... ON FESTIVALS Festivals are fun. Really fun. In fact, probably the most fun you can have while camping.
For anyone planning a festival trip this year, good choice. You should be excited; you’re going to love it. For any parents of people attending festivals this year, you might be a little bit worried about allowing your child into the churning alcohol-fuelled abyss of tents, people and mud. But don’t panic, it only takes a few precautionary measures to have a great time and also get home in one piece. First and foremost, your tent is your home for the weekend. It’s a good idea to make it stand out a bit with a flag, some paint or pitch it near a landmark you’ll recognise. A 3am treasure hunt through the proverbial haystack of canvas is never a fun activity before bed. As for other things you might take, wellies are essential, dry food is a smart move as everything you’ll get from stalls is insanely overpriced. Your ipod, however, stays at home, along with your laptop, straighteners, DS, xbox, tv, and all other pieces of tech you do not need. Regarding phones, your new iphone 5 will not be safe in your back pocket. The best idea is to bring an old brick that you wouldn’t mind losing, and is much less likely to get stolen. On the topic of stealing, locking your tent might sound sensible, but in reality it will just advertise to potential thieves that there might be something worth taking inside your tent. Canvas is hardly foolproof security, so best just to carry money and phones on your person at all times. Getting lost in a big crowd is not at all difficult, so arranging a meeting place with friends is always a safe bet. Other things to bear in mind are which bands you want to see, and where and when they are playing - be aware of any clashes! Don’t think that you have to timetable every second of your weekend either. Festivals are one of the best ways to discover new bands and new types of music you wouldn’t usually bother with, and seeing them perform live is the ultimate way to experience music. - Ella 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ike it or not, we’re stuck in the worst recession since Noah was a lad.
Worse, even, than the Great Depression, and I don’t suppose that was a bed of roses. And before you say anything, no, I wasn’t there at the time! The recession that started in 2008 is certainly taking longer to get out of than previous recessions. And that means one thing – the Government -Of-The-Day will find more ways of taking money off you to plug the gap. Regardless of which side of the political fence you happen to be on. Regardless of which side of “The Great Divide” you’re on. Just take a look at this graph: Richer or poorer, better or worse, you are going to be parted from your money quicker than a fool.

And there’s no quick fix. The “austerity measures” are just the start. This is going to take years if not decades to fix. And they’re going to take your money to do it. In the words of the ever cheerful departing Bank of England boss, Mervyn King, “families must steel themselves for years of pain.” If someone took all your cash and set fire to it, you’d be gutted, right? Yet a bunch of parasites are dipping into your savings, your pensions, your inheritances, your family’s money, and what are you doing about it? My guess is – not much. If you have relatively simple financial needs, you can probably get along fine on your own. But if you’ve a little more to worry about, don’t miss out on opportunities to hang on to more of your money. If you’d like increased well-being and a better quality of life, for a limited period, we can offer a FREE half hour telephone interview with one of our friendly straight-talking advisers, with absolutely no obligation. You can tell us what’s on your mind, and we’ll tell you whether we can help you increase your wealth, and protect it from greedy bankers, crazy Governments, grasping authorities and other legalised robbers.

CHRONICLES IN THE LIFE OF VIEW OF ALFIE PART 1 ANA DAYALTERNATIVE IN PRACTICE. I had lived with Phil for about a year, we got on well and did everything together. Today he had brought me along to experience his working day. Through the open window of the car birdsong filled the air, broken only slightly by the sound of someone cutting the grass and the distant sound of traffic on the A64. It was hard to believe we were only yards from it!
A
rriving at Station House Vets, I was excited at the day that lay ahead. What would I do, who I would see and what different things would I participate in?
As I got out of the car I looked around me, taking in the blue sky and the green fields bathed in sunshine. Inhaling deeply I felt pure happiness at the fact that this was where I would be spending my day. Some people have it far worse I thought! A car pulled up next to me, Flo who I had met previously jumped out and ran into the practice. I followed her in- ready for action. Once inside I became engulfed in the hive of activity behind the scenes which leads to the calm,

The girls on reception were busy organising the vets’ diary, dealing with clients, answering the telephone which never seemed to stop ringing; sifting through paperwork and checking the drug order. They were all deeply involved in their own activities yet working around each other like a welloiled machine. I hung around for a moment or two but soon realised apart from a few friendly words sent in my direction they were all too busy to stop and chat. I headed down to the vets office and came across Cully, a rather attractive lady who had been with the practice for some time. I had heard Phil mention she had a tendency to ‘borrow’ things from other staff members; handbags, keys- furry hats and purses were a favourite, nothing was apparently safe. He said she spent a lot of time sleeping on the job and it was only then that the missing belongings would be found clasped to her face. I decided not to let anything out of my sight while she was in the vicinity! Although in my opinion she displayed odd behaviour for a practice member she was much loved by everyone and accepted for her eccentricity, and when awake,

Hence the fact she had not been dispatched elsewhere I sat down to collect my thoughts and soon realised I was hungry and fancied biscuits- not an uncommon thought in a vets so I’m lead to believe, but it was too early to partake just yet, so I decided to have a look in the consulting room. I had just reached the doorway when I was stopped in my tracks. Inside I could see an assistant restraining a cat, its head pointing towards the ceiling, the vet approached and stuck a large needle and syringe into its neck and proceeded to draw blood from the jugular vein. Looking up as she finished the vet caught my eye and must have seen the shock on my face as she quickly rushed to the door and shut it leaving me standing alone in the hallway. Realising I was not welcome there I went to the prep room to see if I could help out...... To be continued… By Celia Carr RVN, Station House Vets

RYEDALE DOG RESCUE
R
yedale Dog Rescue are always very grateful for the support they receive from the local community and this month Irton Scout group literally went that extra mile to help rescue dogs by doing a sponsored walk on the North York Moors where they raised a fantastic £200 which will help us to save the life of another dog - For every dog we rescue is microchipped, vaccinated and neutered which costs us approximately the money raised by the scouts - A big thank you from us to them and to everyone who helps us to raise vital funds for the charity. Summer is a busy time for the volunteers who run Ryedale Dog Rescue and we have lots of fundraising events coming up, so we are always looking for more volunteers who would be happy to give up some of their spare time to help on a stall, bake cakes, provide tombola prizes or even run your own sponsored event like the scouts - All ideas are welcomed!
We have an Auction of Promises in October and are currently looking for items to auction so can help with this - Do you have a skill that you would be happy to put to good use, maybe donate an afternoon’s gardening or ironing? A tennis or golf lesson? All auction items welcome, small or large, they will help us to make a difference to rescued dogs lives.
DOG OF THE MONTH
DAISY, A PRETTY WHITE SMALL LURCHER Daisy came to us due to her previous owners ill health and is approximately 6-8 years old. our battery goes on your remote car key fob, your smart phone screen cracks. Would you know what to do to repair or replace it? Luckily for you, there’s a company who can help and they’re right on your doorstep. Rainbow Data Ltd is the umbrella company for three separate services – repairs and refurbishment of car key fobs; smart phones and tablets; and now, also, computers. RDL was established 12 years ago when a hobby unexpectedly became a profitable business. Proprietor Ian Young spotted a gap in the market for repairing remote car keys. At the time, Ian was buying in bulk refurbished remotes to sell onto the car trade. But with 10-20% of the stock broken, he had spare parts on his hands. Ian discovered he could fix them and provide as-good-as-new items at vastly reduced prices. As the first person to offer this service, Ian initially worked online, offering a mail
The latest development has been the introduction of an in-store ‘while-you-wait’ service. What’s more, customers choosing this option will receive a voucher for a free cup of coffee at the café opposite the store. So if you have an old laptop, smart phone or key fob which you’d given up hope of using again, why not call 01751 474794 or visit the newly refurbished offices at the Market Place, Pickering for help and advice.

Top Tips from a dental professional
Tooth Whitening. Is it safe?
you didn’t know about Tooth Whitening 7 Things
* When carried out by qualified dental professionals it is perfectly safe. Based on their knowledge of your oral health your dentist can advise you on and develop by Christine Parker a treatment plan to achieve BDS (GDC 72136) the desired result. Only trained dental professionals can legally whiten teeth. Beauticians, hairdressers, etc do not have the necessary training and knowledge and could permanently damage your teeth and gums, they won’t be able to help you if something goes wrong. Although whitening won’t improve the shape or surface of your teeth it is often preferable to other more invasive treatments like veneers. It is also relatively easy to maintain. Your Dentist is trained to select the correct product for your teeth and gums. Over the counter products often have insufficient safety data and evidence of their effectiveness. This can result in burned lips and gums or more permanent damage. A carefully controlled concentration of material is applied to your teeth using custom made trays. Your dentist will advise you of how many sessions are necessary to achieve the result you require. You may experience some sensitivity during treatment and for a short time after, this is normal and will soon fade. Over the counter and internet products may be unsafe. They may have been manufactured with little control, their exact chemical content may not be known or disclosed. This makes it difficult to assess their safety. They may also provide an inferior result to that you would expect from your dentist.

HEALTH SUNSHINE AND TEARS AVOIDANCE OF SUNBURN Sunburn is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Anyone who has painful sunburn as little as once every two years can triple the risk of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Many of us think of sunburn as a holiday problem, but it can happen just as easily in the UK as anywhere else. The easiest way to burn is when we are not even aware of being exposed to the sun. Watching a sporting event, gardening, walking or just sitting in the park are all potential sunburn situations.
I
t’s that time of year again, when commonsense departs in the face of our desire for a golden tan. All too often we sunbathe with too little protection and the colour we achieve is a deep lobster red, instead of the honey tones we crave.

COVERING UP If you know you are going to be exposed to the sun for several hours, why not wear a widebrimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt and long trousers or a skirt? A 25 SPF sunscreen should allow you to be exposed 25 times longer than with no sunscreen, but recent tests have shown this isn’t always the case. Probably the most likely way to get sunburn is poor application of sunscreen. Don’t leave children (and that includes young teenagers) to do it themselves as they will almost always miss bits. The areas that often get overlooked are inside the top of the arms, tops of the ears, and just at the edge of where your clothes or swimwear starts. Apply and reapply sunscreen in generous quantities. WEAKENING FACTORS Antibiotics and drugs prescribed for skin conditions, including acne treatments, can lead to greater vulnerability to sunburn. The herbal drug, St. John’s wort, is also thought to make you more vulnerable to burning. TREATMENT If you do feel yourself burning and can’t immediately get out of the sun, then cover as much of your face and body as you can with light clothing or a towel. You can take the heat out of your skin by sponging with cool water but don’t then stand in the sun to dry as that will just make
things worse. Once indoors take a cool bath or shower for ten minutes. Do not use bath salts, oils, or perfume because of skin sensitivity. Avoid rubbing the skin. Use soft towels to pat skin dry. Follow up with a fragrance-free skin moisturizer. Cool compresses with equal parts of milk and water can soothe inflamed areas, as can the application of calamine lotion. A paste made out of cornstarch and water applied to the burned areas is often effective, as are thin, cold slices of raw cucumber, potato, or apple. If your eyelids are burned, then tea bags soaked in cold water can bring relief. On the subject of cold water, don’t forget to rehydrate by taking frequent sips. MEDICAL ADVICE If blisters burst, apply an antibacterial ointment. But do bear in mind that if there is extensive blistering, other skin damage, itching, severe headaches or fever, you should seek medical advice. By Lorraine Mace

You can make the pastry in a food processor according to the manufacturer’s instructions or if you prefer, rub the butter into the flour in a bowl with your fingertips. Add the egg yolk and just enough water to bring the dough to a firm ball. Roll the pastry out large enough to line a loose-bottomed 24cm wide, 3.5cm deep tart tin. Lightly butter the tin, and then dust it with a small amount of flour, knock out the surplus then lower in the circle of pastry making sure you push it right into the edges. Be careful not to make holes or tear it. Trim the excess pastry and place in the fridge to chill for 20 minutes. Set the oven at 200C/Gas 6. Put a baking sheet in the oven to warm. Line the pastry case with kitchen foil and baking beans or a saucer and slide
onto the hot baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove from the oven and carefully lift the beans or saucer and foil out.

t’s hard to remain excited when you’ve had courgette at every meal for a week, and marvellous though raspberries are there is a limit to just how many you can eat at once. Take a bit of time to store your harvest and you can be enjoying home grown right through the winter. Jobs for August:• Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign.
If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. • Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. • Keep harvesting those courgettes! • Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage. • Strawberry runners that were potted up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now.

The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgettes and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very

It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter it just takes a little planning and now is the time to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been lifted and left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, also work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting.
then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing! Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you
can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work

If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? Rice Cooking Instructions To cook as a dish to accompany stews, curry, etc. • Allow 1 cup for 2 people. • Put a tablespoon of oil or butter in a pan and toss the rice in it. Add two cups of water per cup of rice. Season with either salt or a stock cube. • Cover and cook till all the water is absorbed. Serve. To serve as a vegetable risotto • Fry chopped leeks and peppers (or any vegetable you like) in oil or butter. Add 1 cup of rice per 2 people. Stir in a cup of white wine; cover. RYEDALE WALKING GROUP is a well established group with over 60 members, based in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire. Most of our weekend walks are 5-12 miles in length. In addition, during the Summer months, we have weekday evening walks, which are usually about 5-6 miles in length. We also organise short walking breaks for our members and challenge walks throughout the year. New members are welcome to join us anytime. We have a modest annual membership fee of £5 to cover insurance and expenses. The social side of our group is important too, so we often frequent tearooms, pubs, fish & chip shops, look in churches and at anything of architectural interest. We also have regular evening meals out. Our members enjoy a 10% discount at some local walking shops. Full details of our programme can be found on our website at www.ryedalewalkinggroup.btck.co.uk or email phil@yorkshirewalker.co.uk Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th August

HOW WOULD YOU SPEND A £1MILLION? Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church Have you ever sat down and tried to work out how you would spend £1million? I have, several times, and have encouraged others to do the same because I’m fascinated by the result: it is never enough! You may dream of buying a house, booking a holiday, clearing some debts and giving some away to family or a favourite charity, but it isn’t long before you will be wondering if you could have a little bit more. How would I spend £2million? Have you ever noticed the excitement of a child as the long expectant wait has come to an end and they receive the present they couldn’t live without? How often the satisfaction is short lived and they are soon back flicking through the Argos catalogue choosing the next ‘must have?’ A temporary contentment replaced by a returning restless ache for something more. There seems to be a longing in humanity for something more. We see the same principle played out on the world stage. I’m saddened when only a year after his appointment; the Egyptians oust their democratically elected leader. A revolution driven by a new Egyptian generation, desperate for a voice, wanting to let go of the past and to play their part in the future has left them disillusioned, divided and disenchanted. Change was slow, it didn’t meet with their expectation, it just didn’t satisfy. Why are we so restless? Why is contentment so elusive? Have the Rolling Stones still ‘got no satisfaction’? Blaise Pascal (1623-62) was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Christian philosopher. In honour of his achievements, the Pascal, a measurement of pressure is named after him as well as Pascal’s Law and probability theory. However, he is also famous for making the following observation about humanity: “What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and unchangeable object; in other words by God himself.” Can the restlessness of humanity be fixed, can satisfaction be found, could it be that we are just looking in the wrong place?

ORD IS on a mission to please families. At least, that’s the impression I got at the all-new B-MAX launch this week. And it’s not a bad objective to have. You see, the B-MAX is aimed at people just like me – parents of young kids who need their motor to be spacious and practical – not just fashionable. If you’ve never had to cope with a struggling two year old then you won’t know what I’m on about, but seriously, trying to fit your grumpy toddler into a car seat isn’t the first thing your aching back wants on a Monday morning. So, Ford came up with a solution - the ‘Easy Access Door System’. Research was painstaking; it involved engineers going ‘undercover’ to observe drivers in their daily routine – going shopping or picking up their children from school. The answer they came up with combines conventional, hinged front doors and rear sliding doors, in a new body design. This integrates the traditional central pillar structure into the front and rear doors,
PROS ‘N’ CONS rather than forming part of the body shell itself, and creates a huge, clear opening - more than 1.5 metres wide. This is around twice the width offered by competitors with alternative door concepts and makes it significantly easier to enter or exit the rear seats, attend to your children in their child seats, or load and unload shopping. The B-MAX’s twin sliding rear doors also make access easier

folded, creating an extensive flat load floor capable of swallowing loads up to 2.34 metres long. That means you’ll get a decent length Christmas tree or even a proper surfboard in the car!
...the B-MAX is aimed at people just like me – parents of young kids who need their motor to be spacious and practical – not just fashionable. in crowded streets or narrow parking bays. The front and rear doors can be opened completely independently, so the front or rear cabin can be accessed as required. But it doesn’t stop there - a flexible and easy-to-use seating system features 60/40 split rear seats which can be folded flat with a simple ‘one-hand, one-motion’ mechanism. Furthermore, the front passenger seat can be
Behind the wheel, the seating position is high and comfortable. The steering wheel is chunky and reassuring to grip and all the controls are very user friendly. The performance and average fuel economy of the 1.6-litre TDCi model I drove was more than adequate on my motorway test run, with excessive wind noise around the wing mirrors being the only disappointing aspect. >> MOTORING CONT... ‘Titanium’ vehicle came with all the trimmings, including cruise control, auto headlamps, rain sensitive wipers and a powerful Sony entertainment system. Of course if, like me, your home is full of nappies, dolls and toy cars then you won’t be so bothered about the quality of your car stereo system or blustery sounds around your wing mirrors. You’ll be more interested in transporting your little ones in the safest car you can afford. Ford has realised this, so even though ease of access has been a key focus with the B-MAX, the company has not ignored protection. In fact the B-MAX has been awarded the highest possible five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP. Ford is so committed to this aspect
Quite simply, the B-MAX is a car which is likely to attract many young families. of its product that it subjected the B-MAX to many crash tests during development. This included 5000 simulated computer crashes, 40 complete crash tests and a further 100 tests which involved the car being mounted on a sled and fired into a barrier. High strength and ultra-high strength steels form more than 58 per cent of the B-MAX body and are used in brackets, called crash-catchers; these lock the ingenious Ford Easy Access Door System in place if the vehicle suffers a side-impact. The B-MAX is also equipped with seven airbags and the frontend is carefully engineered for optimised pedestrian protection.
In addition, the car features Ford’s Active City Stop system – a segment-first designed to help you avoid low speed collisions with stationary or slower moving traffic. And there’s more: the B-MAX features Ford’s voiceactivated, in-car connectivity system, SYNC, with Emergency Assistance, designed to assist you to call for help in the event of a crash. Quite simply, the B-MAX is a car which is likely to attract many young families. But watch out Ford, your dealers may need to provide extra crèche facilities to cope with the droves of wailing toddlers who are bound to accompany parents desperate for a test drive.

HOT AND BOTHERED?
Air conditioning in your car was once a luxury but is now a common feature in most vehicles. Not many of us are aware that, like other parts of your vehicle, the air conditioning system needs regular servicing to ensure it works as efficiently as it should. BAD SMELLS With lack of use over the winter or as your car gets older, bacteria and mould may start to grow in the air vents which can cause unpleasant odours but worse than this, can cause watery eyes, eye infections, throat infections and make breathing problems worse. BMC Motor Engineers offer a deodorising treatment, just £12, which will keep your car smelling fresh all year round. LEAKS AND COMPONENTS If you feel your car doesn’t get as cool as it should, it may be due to leakage of refrigerant gas. This can be put right fairly easily by a leak check of your system which involves a dye being put into the air conditioning system, followed by a complete refill of your air conditioning refrigerant, sometimes referred to as a re-gas. BMC Motor Engineers are air conditioning specialists and can deal with finding the smallest of leaks to major component replacements. BMC service and repair all makes of vehicles and pride themselves on a friendly, efficient and reliable service for their customers. They are experts in keeping 4 x 4s in excellent condition and with top level diagnostic software can help with any of your vehicle problems. Barry McWilliams, owner and mechanic at BMC, is Volvo trained and says “We provide a first class service and are willing to try and beat any like-forlike quote within the local area.” If your air conditioning is making you hot under the collar or your vehicle could do with a safe pair of hands, call BMC Motor Engineers.

I
f you have ever wanted to find out what goes on behind the scenes in our county’s top racing yards then make sure that you are in Malton on Sunday 25th August as once again Malton’s racehorse trainers will be opening their doors to the public. Over twenty stables will be open between 9am and 1pm and will provide the opportunity to meet some of racing’s equine heroes with this year’s equine celebrity guest none other than Grand National Winner Auroras Encore! Many of the open yards will feature demonstrations on equine physiotherapy, dentistry and farriery. At Norton Grange Stables visitors can enjoy displays by members of Retraining of Racehorses, who will demonstrate that there can be a life after racing for many ex racehorses who go on to excel in other disciplines. The Northern Racing College will also be in attendance with their Equiciser, for aspiring jockeys keen to have a feel for riding ‘jockey style’. Back by popular demand, Horse Whisperer’ Gary Witheford will be performing displays throughout the day at Wold House Stables, providing a unique insight into his successful training methods. Throughout the day there will also be displays of Horseracing Photography and Memorabilia in the Milton Rooms, along with a display of the plans for Jack Berry House, with refreshments, stalls and much more on offer in the town’s Market Place. Once the stables have closed their doors visitors and racing enthusiasts are encouraged to take part in a Question and Answer session featuring Jack Berry, John Francome and David Elsworth which will be hosted by the Milton Rooms in the afternoon.
With a day full of both equine and human racing celebrities it promises to be an unmissable event. Admission is £10 per adult with under 12’s free and includes entry to all yards, park and ride covering all of the yards in Malton and Norton and parking at all yards outside of town.
