elcome to the Christmas edition of the Handy Mag, the last for 2011. It has been a very busy year and I’m looking forward to a rest so that I can start 2012 feeling refreshed. With a deadline for the first Handy Mag edition of the year of 3rd January I know the New Year will start all too soon and too fast. But a restful and happy Christmas doesn’t simply happen without planning and this months’ HandyMag is full of local goodies and services that can lessen the strain of the occasion and save on the pocket. I’m determined this year to have a relaxing Christmas break, with plenty of time to see family and friends. Guests will have to take us as they find us, but with last minute mince pies, bought Christmas cake iced at home (November passes by too quickly for making Christmas cake) and lots help

Stocking-Up on Stories

This Christmas

You can take it as given that there won’t be anything good on television again this holiday. Why not endeavour to beat the box this yuletide, armed with a book. We have the pick of the Christmas releases that are guaranteed to have the whole family engrossed, bringing peace on earth and a silent night of reading.

For Him

May I Have Your Attention Please? James Corden There’s no getting around it. Men like big, hardback, biographical tombs and what better than to buy the man in your life the highlyanticipated autobiography of funny-man James Corden. As a self-proclaimed attention-seeker, Corden’s life story (all 32 years of it, so far) will have you laughing and crying in equal measures. Talking openly about repeated knock-backs in his early career, Corden charts his life from his first role as family entertainer, right through to his national fame and winning a place in our hearts as ‘Smithy’ in the acclaimed TV series Gavin and Stacey.

For Her

Wrapped Up in You. Carole Matthews Down-with-love Janie Johnson is 30 and in need of kickstarting her life. She astounds her friends by deciding to leave the Christmas snow 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

behind and heading off in search of the beating African sun and the vast landscape of the Massai Mara. Will Janie be able to escape her past and find love on a higher plain?

For Them

Immortal Beloved. Cate Tiernan For teenage girls mourning the end of the Twilight saga, comes ‘Immortal Beloved’, the first book in a new trilogy by acclaimed author for young adults, Cate Tiernan. This classically dark romance centres round Nastasya who’s forced to keep living her life over and over through her inherited immortality. Nothing ever changes when you’re doomed to live forever. An intense and thought-provoking book about friendship, love and loss. Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever. Jeff Kinney Greg’s back for the sixth instalment of this hilarious series. When the Heffley

family are snowed in for the holidays, cabin fever inevitably sets in. What happens when you’re forced to spend time with your relatives? A definite must-read for any family this Christmas, this may even make your tribe seem normal.

For snuggling by the fireside

The Night Before Christmas. Clement Clarke Moore ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.’ Why not rediscover the classic Christmas poem; the perfect antidote to Christmas commercialism. It’s one of the most parodied poems of all time but the original still brings a tear to the eye. The Night Before Christmas is an ideal accompaniment to mince pies and warm milk ahead of the last sleep before the big day itself.

A Classic...

The Guinness Book of World Records 2012 Back for another year, this popular series will have you fighting over who reads it first. Filled with amazing records and human feats, bizarre animals and scientific absurdities, you’ll find the boring bit between Christmas and New Year seems to fly by.

HOMES & GARDENS Do you love gaudy baubles? Or are you more of a minimalist Christmas decorator? Katherine Sorrell outlines how to avoid Yuletide decorating excess while still enjoying a stylish festive season…

A Cool Yule by Katherine Sorrell

W

hen I was little my grandparents always had a fake Christmas tree that groaned with the weight of about a thousand sputnik-shaped fairy lights. Candy-coloured and frosted with artificial ice, they flashed on and off in a way that, to a five-year-old, was nothing if not glorious. Yup, my grandparents really went for it – and if that’s your style, I’m not going to knock it. There is another Christmas-decorating school of thought, however. One that allows you to celebrate without going over the top. Here are five guidelines to help you create a stylish seasonal look for your home:

1. The wreath

Your front door is the handshake to your house, and a pretty Christmas wreath is a welcoming addition. Buy or make one that suits the size and

colour of your door. Natural materials such as holly, ivy, bay and twisted willow are lovely, and you can finish it off with berries and ribbon for a traditional effect; alternatively, wire and palecoloured beads are subtle and sophisticated. Just avoid the pine-cone-sprayed-with-gold-paint-look.

2. The tree

No Christmas is complete without a tree, and this is where ideas of pared-back décor tend to go astray amid a chaotic surge of baubles and assorted hanging things that you’ve accumulated over the years. Less is more, so stick to a colour theme: you could use plain silver balls with white or coloured lights, for example. Or go for a natural look, perhaps using ribbons, green twine and cinnamon sticks. For those leftover decorations that you’re desperate to display, why not pile them onto a small tree in a pot, or create a separate mantelpiece or fireplace arrangement?

3. The cards

Even with the rise of e-greetings, the demise of the traditional Christmas card seems far away. But what to do with them all? Organise them, is the answer. Propping them up randomly around the house might make for a jolly, ad hoc look, but if you arrange them en masse it’s far more effective. if you’re short of time, the best solution is simply to clear a side table or shelf and arrange the cards carefully with the largest at the back. But if you want to go for effect, try using painted mini wooden pegs to attach cards to a string, or punching a hole in each card and tying it on with bright ribbon, raffia or yarn.

Gather together an eclectic mix of lovely items and festoon your mantelpiece or windowsill with festive goodies. 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

4. The table

Abandon any thoughts of paper napkins printed with holly berries or tartan – simple colour co-

ordination is key here, from table cloth (or runner) to serviettes, plates, glassware and any extras. And the colour doesn’t just have to be red or green – with some lateral thinking a gorgeous display can be created around an unusual colour theme: pastels, icy whites and silvers, dark and moody or contemporary brights, perhaps. Start by picking one colour, and accessorise with touches of co-ordinating tones. If your crockery is coloured, it makes sense to work everything around that; if it’s white, you can do pretty much whatever you like. No need to spend a great deal of money – much can be achieved by choosing accessories such as candles, crackers and flowers with care.

5. General displays

There was a time when chains of coloured

paper hung from corner to corner of the room were the height of Christmas chic. This may no longer be the case – but home-made decorations can still be a wonderful thing. It could be as simple as a row of chunky candles, wound round with ivy, a wooden bowl filled with clove-studded oranges, or a string of white fairy lights clustered in a glass vase. And last but by no means least, involve the children in making paper chains, bunting or felt cut-outs for that charmingly wonky, home-made look.

Christmas Traditions

Hanging a stocking by the fire

A long time ago there lived a man who had three daughters. His wife had died some years earlier and now his daughters were of an age to be married. However, at that time in history, the prospective husband’s family would expect to receive a dowry – gifts and money – when their son married. The man was very poor and simply could not afford to do this. Each night his girls would wash and mend their clothes. To enable their stockings to dry they would hang them near the fire. A wealthy man called Nicholas, who lived in the village, had heard of the girls’ plight and one night called by the house after dark. Seeing an open window he sneaked in and put a bag of gold coins in each of the stockings. When the villagers heard of the widower’s good fortune, they too started hanging stockings by their fireplaces. Because the stockings were by the fire this lead to the belief that Santa came down the chimney in order to deliver his gifts. Nicholas did many more secret good deeds – he really was the original benevolent St Nicholas.

Christmas Puddings

Christmas Pudding’s history is not as a dessert at all, but as a savoury meat based dish. In Medieval times all surplus livestock were slaughtered in the autumn so that they did not have to be fed over the winter. 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

As with many traditions, there is usually a story of how a custom came about. Some sound plausible and some less so. But they almost always have a nostalgic tale behind them and never more so than at Christmas time.

associated with Christmas. It is said that the pudding should be made with thirteen ingredients to represent Jesus and His Disciples and that every member of the family should take turns to stir the pudding with a wooden spoon from east to west, in honour of the Wise Men.

Christmas Crackers

The meat had to be preserved however and a pottage was prepared in a large cauldron, the ingredients being slow cooked, with dried fruits, sugar and spices added. It is more likely that the dish was called plum pottage or plum porridge, the dried version of plums being prunes. As meat preserving techniques improved, the savoury element of the dish decreased, although of course if suet is used a small element of meat may still be included. It was not until the 1830s however that the cannon-ball of flour, fruits, suet, sugar and spices, all topped with holly, made a definite appearance, becoming more and more

No Christmas dinner table would be complete without Christmas crackers, and the hats, small gifts and bad jokes are very much part of the tradition. The crackers were believed to have been invented in around 1850 in London, by a sweet maker called Tom Smith. He was often trying to think of new ways to market his sweets and sitting by his fire one night, he thought it would be a good idea if they could make a similar crackle to a burning log as the sweet wrapper was pulled in half. The idea caught on although rather too well as rival manufacturers soon sprang up. Tom Smith’s son, Walter, came up with the idea of including other items and offering different designs as a way of differentiating his product from those of his competitors. The best tradition of all of course is to spend time with your family, and that needs no explanation.

It’s that time of year again. The annual office get-together and accepting more invites to nights out with the girls than you could ever possibly attend.

hristmas is great, but all that socialising can become stressful and a packed diary means less time to prepare for those all important dates. So, what you really need is an easy, effective and well-planned beauty routine that’s going to save you hours getting ready, guarantee you’ll look gorgeous and ensure that you’re the centre of attention - for all the right reasons. Preparation is certainly essential. Book hair appointments well in advance; it’s the busiest time of year for stylists and a marvelous

mane is a must-have accessory. As great as it is to try out a new look, be cautious around the holiday season - hair disasters are sure to kill party spirit! Instead stick to a look that you know suits you and that’s easy to manage - leave the re-styles until the new year. Cold winter days, centrally heated rooms and the usual bouts of seasonal flu can play havoc with your skin, leaving it dull, dry and lifeless. So it’s a good time to take notice of your skin type and invest in a routine that will leave it glowing.

Dry, sensitive types suffer more in the winter and need to be regularly moisturised. Apply a day cream in the morning and a ‘heavier’ night cream in the evening to keep moisture levels topped up. Oily skin shouldn’t be neglected. It too needs moisturising - a ‘light’ product works best, and should be used twice daily. Don’t forget the delicate eye area too - use an eye cream daily to avoid wrinkles. Time to find your perfect party make-up look. It’s a good idea to take advantage of the free makeovers offered by most of the top beauty brands at department stores. Having a specialist consultant offer their expertise when it comes to the way you apply your make-up can result in a great new look for you. And you get to try out the products before you buy. Take notice of professional application tips and invest in the right tools - quality make-up brushes leave a great finish. Long lasting foundations, lengthening mascaras and vibrant lipsticks work wonders for evening, and will help keep you looking great into the small hours. And finally, get your nails looking as polished as you are. Repair breakage and reinforce damage to the nail surface with a strengthening treatment. File and shape before applying lashings of colour. Or, for a really fashion-forward look, try the latest trend - nail wraps. They’re cute, creative, fun and perfect for a party. With everything now in place to make you look fabulous, all that’s left to do is enjoy every minute of the best time of year and make this Christmas one to remember.

HOMES & GARDENS

A real proper

Christmas Tree by Pippa Greenwood

I have to admit it: I LOVE Christmas… and if there is one part of it I’d hate to do without, it’s a Christmas tree. No, I don’t mean a tinsley one or trendy black or brown one… I mean a tree complete with needles and ideally that wonderful aroma that only a real, proper Christmas tree can bring.

If you’re worried that real trees are not good for the planet, don’t forget that a British grown tree is most definitely not an ecological disaster zone – if you think about it, they’re a crop plant rather like a field of wheat except that they are generally given less fertiliser and fewer chemicals than many more run of the mill crop plants. So go on, make sure you buy one this Christmas! There are a few things you ought to think about before you buy your tree, faced with rows of different types at often very varying prices. It can be really daunting, so have a read of my guide to real Christmas trees:

The Norway spruce

(Picea abies) is the traditional tree, my favourite but perhaps not a favourite if you are more house proud. It has gorgeous dark green pointed needles and that unmistakable aroma but

sadly it is the most likely to drop its needles. Having said that, if you treat it well, it won’t perform that badly and you can enjoy the lowest cost of the real trees.

The Scots pine is now a

regular option as a Christmas tree, with its long paired blue-green needles it’s quite distinctive. The needles are fairly densely packed on the branches and they also hold quite well.

The Serbian Spruce

(Picea omorica) has long been the favourite festive tree in central Europe, as it’s good looking and has good needle holding… but of course no Christmas-tree smell!

The Nordman fir (Abies

nordmanniana) has become increasingly popular in recent years, with its shiny green needles being almost impossible to shift, so certainly

www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 29

HOMES & GARDENS a good choice for those who hate any mess.

The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is less regularly available, but the combination of its good looks and needle holding capacity make it well worth considering.

So, you’ve been persuaded to take the plunge, I hope? But how do you make sure you buy the best tree of the type you’ve decided on? And how do you help it keep its needles and its gorgeous appearance for as long as possible? It’s important not to buy a real tree too early as the longer they hang around after they’ve been cut, the more likely they are to go downhill. I always try to buy a tree produced by a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association – the BCTGA logo should be on the tree or clearly displayed nearby. Take a bit of time to choose the tree – check that it has a good, full shape and that its not too gappy or lop-sided (or if it has the leans make sure that this will be hidden when the tree is in your house). Check the needles - they need to be glossy (for those varieties where this is a characteristic) and the correct colour for the type of tree you’ve chosen. They also need to be free from pests and diseases - basically anything yellowed or inclined to shed, or with white fluffy bits should be avoided at all costs. Never buy a tree that has already been netted as this makes it

a real lucky dip situation. If you do buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it outside - just re-cut the end of the trunk (yes, its time to dig out your DIY saw) and put the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. If it was in a net when you bought it, remove this as it’s important to have air circulating around the needles. When you bring the tree inside, try to avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir with water levels really well topped up – if kept well supplied with water then even the notorious (but lovely) Norway spruce Christmas tree should hold its needles well. When Christmas is over and it’s time for the tree to come down, complete the green-loop and make sure you recycle it – they’re not the easiest thing to recycle or compost at home, but many councils and garden centres now offer a recycling and Christmas tree chipping service. Sign up for Pippa’s newsletter at www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll receive a free e-book on organic gardening too. On Pippa’s website she also offers a new range of GYO essentials and a stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card, a perfect gift for Christmas, where the recipient receives their chosen garden ready veg plants in the spring and every week Pippa emails with topical hints, tips and advice. Vouchers priced from just £39 for up to 66 garden-ready plants, 6 packets of seed and the weekly emails

Acorn Lofts & Joinery

Training the next generation The future of joinery in Ryedale is being secured with the help of Acorn Lofts and Joinery.

J

im Lowry, who himself trained as a carpentry and joinery apprentice at the age of 15 and comes from a line of skilled joiners, was keen for his son to follow in the family footsteps. Tom has been interested in joinery all of his life. At the age of just seven he earned pocket money assembling flat pack furniture for his parents. He continued to demonstrate practical skills which his father is eager to develop. Tom is one of only a handful of apprentices who have been taken on in the Scarborough and Ryedale area. He spends two days a week at Yorkshire Coast College, and the rest of his time he works alongside his father. Jim said “I know that many businesses are finding times tough. Taking on an apprentice is a commitment. Although

young people can develop their skills in an educational setting, the benefits of on-site experience cannot be under estimated. I want to pass my skills on to Tom so that he can continue in our family tradition. My uncle is also a joiner. I have over 30 years experience in the building industry and want to share it with the next generation.” Jim has been self employed for 20 years. Specialising in loft conversions, he provides a quality, professional and complete service for any size of project. Jim says, “Many people don’t realise the amount of potential space they have in their property. Loft conversions are a far more cost effective way of gaining space than moving house. We can offer you the advice you need to ensure your loft conversion is com-

pleted to highest standards and to your specifications.” Acorn can provide so much more than loft conversions. Whether you need minor adjustments to a sash window, small scale renovations or are planning a larger extension project, Jim is happy to provide a free estimate. Prices are competitive and all work is guaranteed. For more information and a free appraisal of your property, call Acorn Lofts and Joinery now on 01944 759122 or 07813 081014.

A Christmas message from Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York.... hristmas should be a time for celebration – a time when we can bring joy to others with our gifts and let them know that they are loved and valued. And yet we do so this year facing a period of real uncertainty with many out of work, and financial worries pressing in on us. It is important to remember that the greatest gift we have is ourselves – our time and talents – not our wallets. Being able to support others in difficult times is a wonderful privilege. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus. One of the names given to Jesus in the Bible is ‘Emmanuel’ which means ‘God with us’. God promises to be with us, not just in the best of times, but at all times. Jesus promises us ‘I am with you always’- for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. The promise of God is that He will be with us through everything that we face, and that He will make a difference – He is our greatest friend. I don’t know when you last asked God to draw close to you and to make a difference. This Christmas, why not take that risk and see what God

does, and why not make going to one of your local churches a part of your celebrations? The service times are on these pages. I am sure your local church congregation will be pleased to see you, and ready to help give support and encouragement to all facing tough times. Christmas is a season when all should feel loved and when all should feel welcome. Take a few moments to rest in the peace and sanctity of God. I pray that, even in the midst of our fears and uncertainties, we will all know God is with us and in control. This Christmas celebrate the birth of his Son, and also His resurrection that sets us free from worry, pain and anxiety. A very happy and blessed Christmas to you all. + Sentamu Ebor

Taking on a cleaner doesn’t need to be a huge investment – it’s a cost effective way of winning back some time to relax – in a squeaky clean home! Contract cleaning from Sparkling Clean is a professional, thorough cleaning service, run by Patricia Bogg. Patricia ensures her vacuum cleaners and cloths reach corners of your home you forgot you had. Using a comprehensive checklist for every room, agreed with you in advance, Sparkling Clean will happily shift and clean behind furniture, wash curtains, and take on heavier jobs that may be impossible for certain customers, such as turning mattresses. She will even take care of the

washing up, laundry and ironing if required. Sparkling Clean also carries out deep cleans – ideal for landlords coming to the end of a tenancy period. And for added convenience, cleaning materials and equipment are provided – after full account is taken of any allergy-sufferers in the household. Patricia said: “My secret to cleaning is that I genuinely love it. My husband cleans up at home – then I clean everything again, because I enjoy it, and my standards are very high.” Patricia launched Sparkling Clean last month after 12 years working with people diagnosed with mental illnesses, in their homes. As a support time recovery worker, she’s proven herself to be reliable and trustworthy. Patricia and every member of her team is also fully CRB checked and referenced. To find out more about Sparkling Clean, call Patricia on 01653 228160 or 07976 782569.

MOTORING

Save money on motoring YOUR car is likely the second biggest purchase you ever make – so it’s vital you protect that investment.

J

ust as you wouldn’t let a leaky roof or broken guttering fester on your house, you need to pay regular attention to your car to keep it in good working order too. And it’s not just about a bucket and sponge. Simple maintenance tasks can preserve your car’s life and its value at resale time. The difference between a car in ‘excellent’ and ‘below average’ condition can be £1,000, according to trade valuation experts, so it really pays to look after your motor. Here are some practical tips to help you save money in the long run. 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters) is a fine and three points. Inspect your car’s tyres weekly for damage, remove stones in the tread and look for signs of uneven wear. Pressures should be checked monthly too preserving the tyre’s life, and your fuel economy.

Well Oil Be

It’s amazing how many motorists don’t even know how to check their oil, let alone remember to top it up. However, failing to do so will have dire consequences. Check it fortnightly, making sure the car is on level ground, engine cold and the level is between minimum and maximum. Check coolant levels too and get any abnormal noises or poor performance problems checked by an expert.

Easy Does It

Air We Go

Air-conditioning needs regular attention. Topping up the system with gas and lubricating it will cost around £70 at a garage and should be done every two years. This will stop unpleasant smells and bacteria forming. Poorly serviced systems have to work harder, putting undue strain on the engine.

At Your Service

The recession saw many motorists skip servicing to try and save money. This really is a false economy. Sticking to your car’s maintenance schedule will ensure it’s working properly, prevent failures and prove it’s been looked after at resale time. Keep every receipt and old MOT, as well as a stamped-up service book for the next owner.

Fuel’s gold

Polished off

Cleaning your car regularly with quality products is the best way to preserve its value. Glass’s Guide says a comprehensive clean can add £600 to a car’s value.

Hose Down

A vital part of the car cleaning procedure is to hose the car down before washing. This removes fine particles of grit that can scratch the paintwork as you wash. These scratches will make your paint look dull and hazy, putting off future buyers.

It might look like a costly alternative to regular fuel, but the AA says a few tanks of super unleaded can help preserve your engine. Using three tanks of super in succession will clean injectors and allow the engine to run more efficiently, helping preserve its working life.

Tyred Out

The way you drive can dramatically affect how long your car will last. Driving with care, avoiding harsh acceleration and hard braking will reduce wear on components. It’s also worth thinking, do you need to make that trip? Lower mileage cars are worth more.

Wheel-ie good idea

Invest in a quality wheel cleaning brush and wheel cleaner to shift stubborn stains. Apply a coat of wheel wax which will stop future grime taking hold. Used car buyers love alloy wheels, but only if they’re in good condition. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

What cars make sensible buys?

assing your driving test is one of the best feelings in the world – but the joy of finally getting your licence can quickly disappear when it comes to finding a car. Astronomical insurance costs can put many models out of the reach of teenagers, but don’t despair too much – there are options out there. You need to accept the fact that insurance is going to cost you more than the car, but you can help cut the price by taking a Pass Plus course or asking to be added to your parents’ policy as a named driver. That will mean talking to them first though. If that sounds too challenging there are new insurance schemes that place a black box in your car to monitor your driving style and charge you accordingly – this can be a great way of cutting premiums. But what cars make sensible buys? Here, we have scoured the classifieds to hunt down a few options you may want to consider.

Peugeot 106 from £300 They can be picked up for next to nothing and with a choice of engines and trims to suit most budgets, a 106 is a tempting option. Most are a bit basic, but they’re entertaining to drive and reasonably affordable to insure. However, they’re not known for their reliability so try and buy one with service history and have it checked over before handing over your cash.

Fiat Cinquecento from £400 Made famous by TV show The Inbetweeners, this little city car wasn’t Simon’s motor of choice without good reason. It’s extremely cheap to run and insurance won’t be too painful either. Don’t expect much in the way of equipment and remember these Fiats can be a little unreliable, so budget for repairs.

Ford Ka from £300 Cheap to buy, run and fix and there’s thousands on the road to choose from. Even models with air conditioning and CD players can be had for under a grand, but keep an eye out for rust under the sills, behind the bumpers and around the fuel filler cap. And buy the latest one you can afford. 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Toyota Yaris from £750 One of the most bulletproof models if you want to avoid running repairs, a Yaris is a sensible choice. They’re roomy inside and if you can stretch to a diesel variant, trips to fuel stations will be relatively infrequent. Insurance costs are surprisingly affordable and it’s a safe option, but prices can reflect that.

Citroen C1 from £2,700 This Citroen is the sister car of the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo – not much changes apart from the badge. It’s good to drive and being relatively new it’s one of the safest options. However, insurance will be a bit more expensive than others and you’ll be hard pressed to find one with air con. Fuel economy will make up for the lack of equipment, but they are still pricey.

Finally, a couple of tips if you’re buying your first car: Always take someone with you who knows what they’re looking at, even – and don’t laugh – if that means your parents. Have the car checked over by a mechanic too – it’s often worth half an hour’s labour in a garage to save you big bills. And for more expensive cars fork out for an HPI check to ensure it’s not stolen (or ask your Gran to pay for it). Happy hunting! by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk) Copy deadline for the next edition is Thursday 29th December

The Handy Household W - The Labours of Lemons

e all know they go nicely with a G&T, but did you know that lemons contain enough acid to ruin the lives of most bacteria found in our kitchens? So, whether you want to sanitise a chopping board, disinfect a counter top or mop the floor, lemons are a great way to keep our homes clean and healthy. Lemons also make it easy to clean a microwave, simply place a bowl of water and lemon juice in the appliance and warm for a few minutes. The steam acts on any stains or lingering smells and once you’ve removed the bowl, you can simply wipe the microwave clean. When it comes to laundry, lemon juice is also brilliant for brightening your faded whites. You can either add it to your washing cycle, or soak delicates in a solution of lemon juice and water to create a mild bleach effect. What’s

52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

more, tough food or blood stains stand little chance against this wonder product – simply squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the stain and let it soak in for around 20 minutes, before rinsing with water. And the benefits don’t stop there, as lemon juice is well known for helping to keep us clean and healthy too. Sore throat? Mix lemon juice with honey and warm water to make a soothing drink. Garlicky and onion-smelling fingers can also be thoroughly cleaned by rubbing over with half a lemon and rinsing your hair in lemon juice can even help to combat chlorine-green hair after swimming. So, why not swap your harsh chemical products for the natural and economical power of lemons?

Malton District Male Voice Choir’s last annual concert with Wendy Goodson. The next will be in May 2012.

Festive spectacular as Malton choir reveals concert switch

M

alton District Male Voice Choir is gearing up for a guest Christmas appearance in the town after announcing it is switching its annual concert next year to take part in celebrations marking a double anniversary. The popular choir is the guest of Malton’s St Michael’s Church on Saturday December 10th. The concert of Christmas music follows one in Appleton le Moors in early December, the second in the village this year. The performances come as the choir reveals it is switching its annual concert in 2012 from autumn to May 12th in the Milton Rooms to be part of celebrations marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and also to mark its own fifth anniversary. The choir was created in 2007 by opera performer Chris Thornton-Holmes and local singer Tom Todd. Its last annual concert was on September 10th in the Milton Rooms with acclaimed local

opera singer Wendy Goodson. The name of next year’s guest has not yet been revealed. Choir Chairman Tom Todd said “there is a lot going for a spring annual concert. Apart from joining in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, it will be a great way to shake off the winter blues. And it will mark not only our fifth year but the start of yet another busy singing season”, he said. Among other concerts expected in 2012 is the choir’s third with Harmonia Ladies’ Choir and repeat concerts by popular request in a number of towns and villages around Ryedale. The choir’s repertoire ranges from popular to classical songs and it welcomes new members. Singing experience and musical knowledge is not required but an ability to sing is. It meets every Friday. If you’d like to join, call Secretary David Ackroyd on 01944 758693 or Chairman Tom Todd on 01653692362. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 61

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

Boosting Immunity It’s that chilly time of year when sniffles and bugs are all around us. It can make for a miserable Christmas and prevention is better than cure so learn how to boost your immunity and ward off winter bugs.

O

n average an adult can experience colds two to four times every year, while a young child can experience anything from three to eight colds over the same period, with the worst times for susceptibility occurring during winter. Tweaking your diet is key to boosting your immunity, as vitamins and minerals, naturally found in fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, all play a huge part in cold-proofing your body. Increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet, each packed with essential vitamins and minerals, can help to improve immune function. Foods rich in vitamin A, a powerful antioxidant that plays a key role in the body’s immune system, include orange and yellow fruit and vegetables such as apricots, mango, sweet potato and carrots. Vitamin C is a super immune and all-round health booster that can also be effective in minimising asthma symptoms. Dietary sources of vitamin C include kiwi, strawberries, oranges, tomatoes, steamed broccoli and green peppers. Did you know – raw green pepper actually has higher vitamin C levels than many fruits. Vitamin E is another great immunity booster due to its high antioxidant levels. Fruits such as berries are antioxidant-rich so fill up on these at snack or dessert times whenever possible. Vitamin E enriched foods include avocado, carrots, almonds, Brazil nuts and sunflower seeds. Zinc is an important immunity-boosting addition to 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

the diet that helps to reduce the amount of time you have symptoms for, if the early signs of a cold are already present. Zinc can also help you to recover more quickly. Foods rich in zinc include dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, tofu, lentils and sesame seeds. Omega-3 oils which are naturally found in oily fish varieties plus vegetarianfriendly options such as flaxseeds, linseeds, almonds and walnuts, can also help to boost immune function, reduce our susceptibility to infections and reduce the inflammation associated with colds. It may not be the most obvious, or the most popular smelling food, but garlic is a fantastic natural antibiotic, which has anti-viral properties due to its active ingredient allicin, which is effective in opening up airways. Minimise your intake of refined food items such as white bread, white flour, white rice and white pasta as these can depress the immune system and increase your susceptibility

to cold viruses. If you struggle to eat a varied colourful diet, or would simply prefer to have the reassurance of a daily supplement to ensure you have healthy levels of essential vitamins and minerals in your body over the colder months, opt for a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement. However, experts warn that although multivitamin supplements will help to fend off cold infections, they will not replace all of the immuneboosting benefits of a healthy diet. Leading a healthy lifestyle, being physically active and getting a good quota of sleep can additionally help to boost your immunity. Don’t fall into the habit of using the cold weather as an excuse to stay indoors. Getting outdoors, even for moderate exercise such as a brisk stroll, really helps to boost the immune system by strengthening the body and making it better able to fight seasonal viruses and infections.

It’s nearly Christmas again, Mum’s dashing about the house, polishing and hoovering as she goes, and Dad has ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ blasting through the house every waking hour! What to make of Christmas! Every year, I try to find small, yet expensivelooking presents for each of my friends at school. I tend to go for the ‘stocking fillers’ or new-look piggy banks and socks (which are often in the half price sale!), but by the time I have spent £5 - £10 on every friend, it ends up costing me an arm and a leg! This year we decided enough was enough and have all decided to do a ‘Secret Santa’. We each pick a friends’ name out of a hat and only buy that person a present – you can’t tell them that you picked their name, that’s the secret! This way, we can spend a bit more on a single present and nobody is left with junk that they’ll never use, and we all save money! A Secret Santa is a great thing to do whether with school friends or work colleagues so give it a go; but keep the secret or Father Christmas won’t come! For my family, a highlight of the winter is sledging and bumping down our local fields; and the last few winters have been bumper years for snow and bruises! Is it really worth it, trudging all the way up the hill for 20 seconds of thrill, followed by a face-plant in a snow drift? Here’s a tip for keeping sledging fresh - Simply get hold of a tractor tyre inner tube! Sledging on one of these is a whole new experience!! It’s faster, it doesn’t hurt your bum over the bumps so much and you can fit everybody on at once! When the whole family piles on and hurtles down the slope you can guarantee to be laughing as much as you are hurting! Merry Christmas, and see you in 2012

ryedale Buying presents for gadget fans can be tricky, because in many cases they already have what they need. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck with USB lava lamps and iPod socks, though: there are lots of great gifts to choose from - and your present won’t end up stuck in a desk drawer somewhere.

Last minute gadget gifts

I

f you’re buying for an iPod, iPad or iPhone owner - or owners of other smartphones or tablets - accessories make particularly good presents. Firms such as Proporta and Griffin make very high quality cases to keep precious gadgets safe. You can also buy cases for devices such as Amazon’s Kindle - although the best such case is Amazon’s own, rather pricey, Kindle leather cover with built-in reading light. If you can’t or don’t want to spend £50 on a Kindle case, you’ll be pleased to discover that there are lots of perfectly good alternatives for considerably less cash on Amazon.co.uk. We particularly like Diabloskinz’ Kindle “skins”, which cover the Kindle’s dull plastic with something considerably more colourful. There’s a great selection of useful accessories for iPod and iPhone owners too, many of which are compatible with other music players and smartphones: for example, Belkin’s Tunecast 2 plugs into a headphone socket and transmits sound over FM radio frequencies, which is handy for in-car listening or broadcasting to multiple radios in the house. For fitness fans Gear4 and Adidas make armbands for iPhones and iPods, and for 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

audiophiles there’s a dizzying range of headphones and speaker docks. If you’re buying for a frequent flyer, look out for noise-cancelling headphones: they’re superb for air travel. There are lots of gift ideas for photography fans too. The superb GorillaPod range of portable tripods are guaranteed to make snappers happy, while serious photographers might be chuffed to receive a Hama Lens Cleaning Pen or an infrared remote control for their particular model. Alternatively, Photojojo.com has a great range of coffee mugs that look identical to iconic camera lenses, and there are plenty of UK stockists - including Amazon. co.uk - offering delivery in plenty of time for Christmas. Other great gifts for tech fans include the precision of Logitech’s G500 Gaming Mouse (£60) or a portable, wire-free mouse (around £30). Console owners needn’t be left out, either: an official wireless headset for Sony’s PlayStation 3 is around £23. If you’re looking for something more off the wall, how about a flying shark? Iwantoneofthose.com has Air Swimmers, which are remote

controlled balloons shaped like sharks, clownfish and so on. Air Swimmers have been a YouTube sensation, racking up more than 3 million hits from amused gadget fans. If you’re feeling flush, you could also invest in a pair of Trampit Jumping Shoes (from £89) for some truly eye-popping outdoor fun. You don’t need to spend a fortune to find a decent gadgety gift, however. You can pick up - no pun intended - a set of Star Wars Chop Sabers, chopsticks designed to look like lightsabers, for around £11, while the award-winning FroliCat BOLT promises to drive your cat crazy with a high-tech, laser-powered take on a ball of wool for around £19. The completely ridiculous Condiment Gun is a £16 pistol for spraying mustard or ketchup on your lunch, while the slightly more grown-up Tovolo TeaGo is a £12 press that promises perfect tea from your favourite tea leaves.

The Acer Iconia W500 Tablet by Nick Teasdale at tknowIT, www.tknowit.net

T

he Iconia Tab W500 is a Microsoft Windows 7 based Tablet from Acer. There are not that many tablets running windows 7 and many reviewers say that windows 7 isn’t designed for, or doesn’t work on, a tablet. I’ve had the Acer W500 for a couple of months now and would have to say I disagree. It’s not perfect but it works and works well. It is heavier than many of the android based tablets but has a ‘well-built and solid’ feel to it. Unlike many NetBooks it uses an AMD processor rather than the Intel Atom and, when combined with the SSD device and 2GB RAM, provides a decent boot up time. Once running the SSD also means it can be put into sleep mode and resume almost instantly. It’s ideal for surfing the internet and reading emails and a touch of light ‘office work’. One of the advantages over Android tablets is that if a program will run on your windows PC or laptop then it is likely to run on the W500. Like other windows 7 devices it is also unlikely to crash – which is something Android users are having to put up with for now. The down side of a windows device is that you may have to buy programs, such as MS Office, to give you more features and install some form of internet security software. The latter will impact on speed but no doubt when the same products mature for android and apple then they will also ‘become slower and safer’ The 1280x800 screen is bright and clear, the sound is loud and clear for music, skype, etc and the W500 also comes with a full-sized USB port, SD Card slot and HDMI port. Like most tablets it has front and rear facing cameras. There is an optional docking keyboard system but I found the onscreen keyboard reasonably easy to use although it was easier still with an optional stylus/pen. Running windows makes the device more expensive than an Android device and it’s not quite as slick at starting apps as they are but 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

once started they tend not to crash. It makes the NetBook redundant and runs all my windows programs – new and old – so I can confidently carry it around instead of a more expensive laptop. Acer also do an Android based system called the Iconia Tab A500, which could be confusing but it resembles other Android based tablets which tend to be slimmer and more lightweight. For those of you looking for a tablet that has a familiar operating system and will run those windows programs you can’t be without then I’d say it’s worth a look.
