M a ke t ra c ks to Low fi e l d G a ra g e t h i s w i n te r If you hate getting out of bed and venturing outside during the winter months spare a thought for your poor car. On the 2nd of December last year the AA attended an average of 1150 breakdowns every hour! The cold and icy conditions mean it’s not just you that needs an extra layer or two of protection. To ensure you and your family stay safe on the roads this winter we’ve designed our Winter Safety Check to provide that extra protection. And because we feel that everyone should stay safe this winter we’ve decided to make it completely free.

The ‘what’s on’ listings are practically exploding with so many local events to support in the run up to the big day and there are loads of local businesses ready to help you celebrate. When this magazine is at the printers, Nicky, Imogen and I will be attempting to create a Christmas wonderland in our shop window! If you have seen our shop, it’s not very big so is a bit of a challenge. Nicky and Imogen love all things Christmas and are insisting on carols while we work, flashing lights and Christmas biscuits every day – the latter I can cope with! If our next edition is a bit sparse you’ll know it’s because we’ve been too busy celebrating! Next month we’ll be publishing a January edition. This doesn’t normally happen. I usually get a lovely break over Christmas but this year we decided that there really is just too much to tell people so have decided on a New Year edition – very exciting! If you have anything special happening in January, please call or email and let us know. Our deadlines are usually the first Tuesday of the month for the following month’s edition – 2nd December for the January edition. Don’t forget to keep in touch on Twitter @ Handymag, Facebook, by email to marianne@ thehandymag.co.uk or visit our website at www.thehandymag.co.uk for up to date listings of events and all of our advertisers. Well done to Mr Dixon for winning the October competition. We hope you all have a very wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year. Until 2015….

CHRISTMAS CHOIR AND SINGERS ARE BACK BY POPULAR REQUEST has sung at two more ceremonies this past year at churches in Pickering and Kirkbymoorside. To join the choir or book future concerts call Secretary David Ackroyd on 01944 758693.
COMING EVENTS
M
alton District Male Voice Choir and its Ryedale singing friends are back again soon by popular request for another Sunday afternoon festive concert for the whole family. Last December the choir and guest soloists put on a rare Sunday afternoon concert of Christmas music in Malton which many audience members said they would like to hear again. “It went down so well with both children and grown-ups that we are repeating a successful format”, said Choir Chairman Tom Todd.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7th Afternoon concert of festive songs, carols and readings for all the family. Featuring Malton District Male Voice Choir soloists and guest soloists Rachel Anderson and Brenda Harper. At 2.30pm in Malton Methodist Church, Saville Street, YO17 7LL. £6 pay at the door. Children under 12 free. MONDAY, JUNE 15 2015 Evening of music. Malton District Male Voice Choir in concert at South Cliff Methodist Church, Filey Road, Scarborough YO11 2SF.
This year’s concert is on Sunday December 7th at 2.30 pm in Malton Methodist Church in Saville Street with plenty of local parking available. It is hoped the latest daytime event will prove just as popular this time with families and older people. Entry is £6.00 on the door for adults while children under 12 are free. Joining the group’s own solo performers again with new songs is popular Ryedale soprano Rachel Anderson while much-loved comedienne Brenda Harper from Pickering will be injecting her own brand of musical humour into the proceedings. The choir, with Vivien Wilcock conducting and Chris Welch at the piano, will also be introducing new arrangements of popular evergreens alongside traditional carols which the audience will be able to join in. Now in its eighth year, the choir draws its members from a wide area of Ryedale from Helmsley in the west to Scarborough in the east and as far south as York. The December concert will wind up a busy year of concerts for the choir, not only in Malton but also as far afield as Scarborough, Stamford Bridge, Bridlington and Kirkbymoorside. The group is becoming increasingly popular for weddings and 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
Raw Spirit
Iain Banks Subtitled ‘In Search of the PerfectDram’, this book is the story of Iain Banks’ journey around Scotland, visiting as many single malt whisky distilleries as he can and tasting as many types as possible: surely every whisky lover’s dream holiday. At first Iain Banks can’t believe that a publisher really wants him to undertake the task of visiting all of Scotland’s distilleries - there are around a hundred of them, not including those which have closed. Then he begins to realise what an opportunity it is. So, accompanied by various friends and relations, he sets off - stipulating only that he can drive himself and can stop off at home several times to return the spoils of his visits in the shape of as many bottles of single malt as he can carry. From the ‘tourist traps’ of Glenfiddich to the smaller operations like Aberfeldy, he takes us on a journey through the world of whisky. Banks’ style is humorous and engaging throughout, from the first visit to Islay to his final trip to Oban. This is what makes this much more than a tasting guide - in fact, it’s as much a travel book for his beloved Scotland and includes a fair smattering of autobiography, too. If you’re a lover of Uisgebaugh then you may or may not agree with his choice of the perfect dram, but you’ll certainly have fun comparing notes. And, if whisky isn’t your thing then there’s enough scenery, humour and even political comment to keep your interest throughout. The perfect Christmas gift for a whisky-lover.

Orange Pear, Apple Bear, Monkey and Me, Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears All by Emily Gravett With simple text and charming illustrations, there is an Emily Gravett book to suit all ages. Orange Pear Apple Bear is beautifully simple, with a different permutation of the title on every page, and will provoke big laughs from babies (Apple Bear is the current favourite in our house). Available as a sturdy board book, it can be revisited again and again. Monkey and Me is well suited to toddlers who will identify with the main character as, along with her toy monkey, she goes to see all kinds of animals. The simple repetition in the text will have little ones ‘reading’ along and anticipating the revelation on the next page - perfect for reading aloud. Finally, Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears, is an awardwinning book, which is ideal for slightly older readers. Each page details a different one of Little Mouse’s fears, encouraging children to talk about why they might be frightened of things like the dark or monsters under the bed. The real delight here is the multi-layered illustrations, with chewed pages (aided by real mice!) notes, scribbles and annotations. This, and the others above, deserve to become modern classics.

WARNING - DANGER AHEAD! Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
I recently attended a SOLLA workshop when psychologist, Lynda Shaw, explored the difficulties of advising elderly clients about financial matters. Lynda has undertaken significant research on behalf of Standard Life on the role that emotions play in our actions and behaviour in everyday life. Lynda gave a fascinating and, to be honest, disturbing insight. She explained that humans have a sort of inbuilt ostrich mechanism which means that if a particular danger or threat isn’t immediate, the brain totally ignores it and refuses to give it further attention.
I’m a member of the “Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA)”, an organisation that helps people find trusted financial advisers who understand financial needs in later life. Inheritance tax and care costs can wipe out a lifetime of savings and people concerned about this need reassurance that an adviser understands this complex area of advice. SOLLA advisers undertake additional training to develop real expertise to gain this independent accreditation.
That explains a lot about why people don’t put plans in place to make sure their family, and not the Tax Man, benefits from their life savings. It’s not an immediate threat so they ignore it. And when it is an immediate threat – in other words you are on your last legs – it’s too late to do anything about it. That’s why the Tax Man collects billions in this tax every year. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything to change human behaviour. But I can keep banging the drum that Inheritance Tax is pretty much a voluntary tax that’s avoidable if you choose to take action early enough. That’s why I’ve written a book “37 ways to slash £thousands off your Inheritance Tax bill” which is out shortly, normally priced £5.99. But I’ve got 10 copies to give away to the first Handy Mag readers who ask for it.
To get my book ‘37 Ways To Slash £thousands Off Your Inheritance Tax Bill’ call 0330 100 1744, email helen@pen-life.co.uk, or complete the coupon below Name ………………………………...................................... KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP We have some very short walks, and some slightly longer ones. We also have some themed walks, such as one with Kirkbymoorside History Group around the town in August 2015. We are looking for more ideas and extra leaders for 2015, and would love to hear your suggestions.
Kirkbymoorside Environment Group used funds from our fruit picking project to pay for printing bus timetables this year. Why..... because the new bus services being developed and supported by Friends of Moorsbus are aimed at encouraging people to use public transport to access the North York Moors National Park instead of a steady increase in car pollution, accidents, road kill, parking problems and congestion. Using fewer vehicles means that world oil resources will last longer, and that we are not adding to global warming. Whether you are feeling fit or distinctly creaky this winter, using the winter and summer bus services can get you walking more too. Exercise is now prescribed to combat many health conditions, and you can choose to do it alone or in a group. If you don’t fancy walking alone, Friends of Moorsbus organised a guided walk every Sunday from 13th July to 28th September in 2014, and we are now planning are walks for 2015. These walks start and finish in good time for the Moors Rambler and Moors Explorer buses. Some start and finish at the same spot (near a cafe or pub), and for others we walk and then use the bus to travel back to our starting point.
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION:- Friends of Moorsbus 01751 477216, or email friendsofmoorsbus@outlook.com EYMS 128 and Moors Explorer, 01482 592929. Yorkshire Cancer Research is Yorkshire’s very own cancer charity
We are an independent charity – not part of a national charity – and we receive no government funding. We’ve been funding world-class research at Yorkshire’s universities and teaching hospitals since 1925. We are an independent charity – not part of a national charity – and we receive no government funding.
554 people are diagnosed with cancer every week in Yorkshire. There is a clear North-South divide in terms of premature deaths from the disease. Only two northern areas are in the best 50 local authorities in England.
We have voluntary fundraising committees in Pickering, Malton and Helmsley. To find out more about volunteer opportunities and events in your area, please contact Sally Crerar, Head of Community Fundraising, on 01423 877236 or email sally@ycr.org.uk.
Our aim is for Yorkshire to achieve the same cancer outcomes as the best area in England.
We fund research in five key areas:
• Understanding more about Yorkshire’s cancer inequalities • Improving education, awareness and prevention of cancer • Enhancing screening and early diagnosis methods • Increasing the number of clinical trials involving novel cancer treatments • Improving the quality of life of cancer patients. While cancer survival rates across the world are improving, the number of people that receive a cancer diagnosis will continue to increase year on year. Investment in cancer research is focused heavily in the south of England. If a greater proportion of funds were used to address regional problems, we could help more people reduce their risk of developing cancer, receive a faster diagnosis and have better access to pioneering treatments. We are currently committed to spending more than £20m to support 200 scientists and clinicians funded entirely by our donors. 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN BUSINESS BY ROB DAVIES, IT’SEEZE RYEDALE
S
ocial Media is increasingly being used by businesses as a means of maintaining relationships and brand engagement, and to attract new business. But just because everyone else seems to be using it, it does not mean this is the right marketing tool for you. Think about your target audience - do they use social media? If not, then there is little point in investing your time in it.
Facebook,Twitter, LinkedIn - which platform should I use? Three key factors should help determine this: 1. What platforms do your target audience mostly use? 2. What platforms are your competitors using? 3. How much time do you want to invest?

Whichever platform you choose some effort is needed to make it work. Each social media platform uses different language and communication methods so it’s better to pick one or two platforms to focus your efforts on, rather than trying to do everything at once.
What should I talk about? There are no ‘right’ things to say on social media as the freedom to post anything is what makes social media so popular but there are a lot of ‘wrong’ things to do and these vary across different platforms. Before starting do your research to find out what is and isn’t generally considered acceptable. Two rules that apply across all platforms are: Attract: Don’t just do whatever everyone else does – be different. Social media is flooded with people posting different things every second, you need to get noticed among all these posts. Convert: Social Media is not a direct selling tool so instead use it to drive traffic to your website – your sales tool. Transform: Use what you have achieved to attract further success. For example, share endorsements from satisfied clients.

Festivities In The Forest See Santa, snap up a sapling
Santa loves it at Dalby. It’s his busiest time of year but once again he’s making time to stop off on his whirlwind global tour. You can pick up a ticket (£6), and visit him to say hello. Not only does each child get a small gift but also a Norway spruce sapling to take home. Kids can plant their very own tree and watch it grow over the years. A gift that keeps on giving!
Spruce up your tree
Did you know that we sell Christmas trees? We’re especially proud that our top quality trees are responsibly sourced and grown locally. You can choose between a Norway spruce and a Nordman fir, ranging from 3ft to 8ft in height. It’s a big decision to make, so bring the family! Proceeds go to The Friends of Dalby, a local charity.
Gruffalo’s Child
If you came along to our Gruffalo trail, you’ll know how special it was for both for children and grown up kids. We’re excited that now you can take the trail during this extra special time of year. Take a magical

journey into the forest and do fun activities along the way. The activity pack (£2) includes a collecting bag, activity leaflets, spotters sheet and pencil.

Fancy a seasonal stomp? Winter is a great time to see the forest in a different way. There are walking routes to suit everyone as well as cycle trails for you to tackle. You can also book ahead onto a winter scouting skills workshop, including shelter building, pioneering, emergency signals and more. Visit our website for details on all our activities.

Happy Christmas
FROM MALTON, NORTON & PICKERING CHURCHES
A Christmas message from the Right Reverend Paul Ferguson, Bishop of Whitby...
I
t’s a privilege to be asked to write a Christmas message for Handy Mag. I hope that you are enjoying getting ready for a great celebration, and that you’ll be able to spend time with the people you love.
Like every year, 2014 has had its ups and downs for each of us. We can look back on things that have given us real happiness, and things that have been challenging. Perhaps there has been something very important in your life this year, for better or worse, that you’ll always remember. So, whether it’s been a good or bad year for you, what does it mean to share our Christmas greetings? Christmas isn’t about having a few days in which we can escape from ‘the world as it is’. Rather, we are celebrating the opposite of escape: God’s involvement in the world as it is. In the person of Jesus, and for the sake of sheer love, God has come to us. The baby whose birth we celebrate grew up into the man who showed the people he met what God is really like. It’s the same Jesus who died for the sake of the whole of humanity, and who rose from the dead on the first Easter Day. That’s why saying ‘I hope you have a joyful Christmas’ means much more than ‘I hope your turkey is cooked to perfection’ and even ‘I hope that you are able to have friends and family round.’ Hope is a special word in Christian understanding, because deep down it invites us to put our trust in God who knows our needs, both individually and as part of the whole of humanity. Joy is more than surface-level happiness: it’s what bubbles up when that hope and trust is alive in us. Jesus’s
birth is a wonderful part of the story of God’s offer of hope and joy. So, even if there is something that’s been painful for us personally this year, we haven’t got to hide from Christmas: actually Christmas is all the more important, because it tells us once more the story of God’s love, hope and joy, and especially when we most need it. Whatever you are looking back on in 2014, I wish you the most wonderfully hopeful and joyful Christmas: and let’s look forward for God’s hope and joy to be with you in the year to come.

Tis the season to warm yourself up: Hot stone massage uses soothing oils, warm basalt and sometimes cold marble stones to relax your muscles, allowing for a deeper and more intense all-over massage. In hot stone therapy, your therapist applies smooth, water-heated basalt stones to key points on your body. This direct heat relaxes your muscles, which means that the massage itself is more effective and intense than it would be otherwise. The size
of the stones varies, according to which part of the body your therapist is treating. Hot stone massage is said to have health benefits for people with: • muscular pain • poor circulation • rheumatic and arthritic conditions • fibromyalgia • back pain • stress • insomnia • depression.

MOTORING Hyundai i30

from behind. The ‘face’ of the South Korean produced model is only saved by the smart LED daytime driving lamps. Enough of my shallow thoughts about the i30’s appearance, let’s take a deeper journey into what the motor is all about.
If looks could kill then you’ve got no worries if you drive the Hyundai i30 Tourer.
Like its slightly older hatchback sibling, the latest generation Hyundai i30 Tourer, launched two years, offers excellent levels of comfort, refinement and efficiency.
Put it this way; the car’s practical, but it’s no oil painting. Harsh of me? Probably. And let’s face it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What’s more, the car adds a greater load-carrying capability to the i30’s overall package. Space is amongst the best in the class, with the Tourer boasting a larger luggage capacity than the majority of its key rivals.
It doesn’t look like a bulldog chewing a wasp, but it has a bland, characterless presence – especially
But who’s it aimed at? Well, the i30 Tourer is able to meet the demands of both retail and fleet

customers as it offers versatility along with a range of clean and fuel efficient engines. Running costs are also low, not only compared with the older pre-2012 i30 Estate, but with major competitors too. There is a choice of two engines in the range, with motorists able to choose either the 120PS petrol unit, or alternatively the 1.6 CRDi diesel in the form of a 110PS or a higher-powered 128PS variant. Both engines are coupled to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The car on test here is the flagship ‘Style Nav’ 1.6 CRDi 128PS version, with a manual gearbox. Like the hatchback, the i30 Tourer comes specified with a generous list of standard features. The catalogue of kit includes: Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition, multi-function steering wheel and air conditioning, body coloured door handles and mirrors, along with those aforementioned LED daytime running lights. The range-topping Style Nav model adds touch screen navigation plus a rear view parking camera.
It also has alloy wheels - and luxury touches such as cruise control with speed limiter, parking sensors, electric rear windows, climate control and a leather steering wheel and gear knob. Slip behind the wheel, and there are no major complaints apart from the lack of a lumbar support adjustment. That said, the seats are moulded nicely and it’s easy to achieve a good driving position. The binnacle houses clear and simple dials and the car’s fuel gauge takes forever to shift from full. It’s just a shame some cheap looking cabin plastics are in keeping with the car’s unexceptional exterior. The touch screen navigation system isn’t that intuitive and therefore frustrates, but, like all things, once you get the hang of how the gadgetry works, it’s fine. There’s more technology to spice things up on the steering wheel too. Unlike the satnav, there’s a simple button you can push that changes the steering feel from normal to sporty. I kept it in ‘sport’ mode because in an otherwise bland, albeit practical and efficient vehicle, it offers a welcome spark of dynamism to the drive.

GARDENING
Christmas past made present
L
ong before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 21st century, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back … in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today.
The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use

RYEDALE • DECEMBER 2014 • ISSUE 105 evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are tricky and gloves should be worn! The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf! by Lee Bestall at www.inspiredgardens.net

Gravy’s unsuitable- it has too much salt. Pets will drink more-it will be your fault! Like over-eating, it can lead to bloat. A potentially fatal condition, please note! Ponsiettas, amyrillis, holly and misteltoe. Are just a few of the poisonous plants that I know; Chocolate, alcohol, nuts, and mince. Pies, Mushrooms as well can cause pets to die. Swallowed ribbons and paper tangle the guts. Biting baubles can lead to horrible cuts; Christmas trees appear to be fine, But paws can be hurt by needles of pine. As it gets darker on cold winter nights. It’s tempting to turn on your Christmas lights. Your pets, intrigued, may chew through the wire Shocking themselves or starting a fire. The best approach to Christmas celebrations. Is taking care of your pets around decorations. Feed them normally -treats pose a threat!!! If they eat the wrong thing- contact the Vet!!!

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS... We all know the saying but for many stray dogs the answer is simple, they just want someone to give them the love and security of a forever home. As the year draws to a close we look back on the dogs that have come into our care and who are now settled in their new homes like Missy and Buster (pictured). They originally came from totally different areas but became great friends in the kennels and not only their wishes but ours too came true when a wonderful family offered them a home together. They will sleep peacefully this Christmas Eve knowing for them tomorrow will come and Santa will certainly have visited.
Our fundraising continues apace as we prepared for the increase in the numbers of dogs needing our help over the winter months so please come along and support us at one of our upcoming event: 5th, 6th, 7th Dec – We have a stall at the Christmas Fair at Sledmere House 6th Dec – We have a stall at Hovingham Market 6th Dec – We are hosting the Dog Fancy Dress Competition at the Helmsley in Business event. 13th Dec – Christmas Fair and Coffee Morning at The Wells Lane Community Hall.
For details of all these events plus more please visit our website: www.ryedaledogrescue.com or call us on 07581 324153.
Why not purchase a RDR calendar priced at £6.00 they make a great Christmas gift and feature twelve of our very special rehomed dogs. Or could you spare £3.00 per month the equivalent of 10 pence per day to save a dog from unnecessary destruction? If so please contact us to request a standing order form to make a regular donation. Every penny donated to Ryedale Dog Rescue goes directly to the dogs in our care, no personal expenses are paid to our volunteers. 68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Look out for Santa Santa and his sleigh are heading Ryedale way again with the Ryedale Lions Club on his pre-Christmas tour to meet the children around the district.
RYEDALE LIONS CLUB Father Christmas will be making his debut at the switch-on of Pickering’s Christmas lights in the Market Place on Saturday, November 29 before climbing aboard his sleigh and calling at towns and villages all around north Ryedale.
Santa’s “little helpers” from the Lions Club will be with the sleigh and collecting door-to-door in its biggest fund-raising event of the year. “This is a special time of year for all children and their families and we hope as many as possible take the opportunity to meet Santa and help some very worthwhile local causes,” said Ryedale Lions organiser Brian Johnson. Last year the event raised more than £6,500 and this year the money raised will be primarily donated to Macmillan Cancer Support and Ryedale Young Carers Service. WISE MEN FOLLOW Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
What do you do when you’re lost? Like most men, I don’t like asking for directions but recently I had no choice. Visiting is part of my job and to be honest, as long as I note down the postcode, I put my trust in ‘Sally Sat Nav’ until disaster struck: Sally broke. I wish I had paid more attention to the directions I had been given but there was nothing I could do now, I had to humble myself and ask for help and admit it, I was lost! They warned me that finding their home would be difficult but ‘I was a professional, I visit people for a living,’ I thought. After I described where I was, they kindly gave me new directions which seemed straight forward and off I drove again, but could I find them, no! I went up and down their road three or four times before I had to call them again. In the end they had to come and find me. I was so embarrassed! 2000 years ago, a group of wise men turned up in a city and unlike me, willingly asked for directions. They had followed a star to Jerusalem but caused a disturbance across the city when they asked where the King of the Jews had been born. The resident King, as you can imagine, wasn’t pleased to hear a new King had been born and called a meeting with all the local leaders to find him. He was born in Bethlehem they declared and from that moment on he was determined to destroy this new King who could threaten his throne.

On the other hand, the wise men recognised they were lost; they needed direction and were willing to ask for help. In fact, they didn’t feel embarrassed or threatened; they came to honour the King and to present Him with gifts. At Christmas we celebrate the One who was born to be King but how will we respond? Will He cause a disturbance? Will He pose a threat or will He be honoured as King? I think I’ve learnt my lesson, I now take careful note of the directions I’m given. I still get lost at times but I’ve come to realise: wise men follow. At 6pm, on Sunday 21st December, we will be hosting ‘Once upon a Star’ our Community Carol Service at the Milton Rooms. It would be great to see you there. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 79
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas PLANS FOR HELMSLEY’S FESTIVE FUN DAY TAKE SHAPE Ice rink, entertainers, music, food and drink, competitions, rides and more On the back of last year’s successful event, plans have been announced for Helmsley’s Festive Fun Day, taking place to coincide with Small Business Saturday on 6th December. Ryedale District Council is showing its support for the day with the provision of event space and discounted parking. In the Market Place car park, a large area will be reserved for activities and to allow for a ring, which will be home to some of the day’s entertainment. This will include a dog fancy dress competition, the community choir and a visit from the Ryedale Lions’ Santa. In addition, there will be all day parking available for just £1.50 at the long stay car park. As well as the shows and performances taking place in the ring, other confirmed activities include: • Street performers and buskers • Children’s octopus ride • An Ice rink situated at The Black Swan (from 4th – 7th December, 12 noon – 8pm) • Activities for teenagers and older children, run by North Yorkshire Youth, including circus skills, human marbles, and crazy golf • The Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue vehicle 80 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
• A photograph treasure hunt • Lantern Making • Glitter Tattoos raising money for the Snowdrop Appeal • Children’s ‘Hook a Duck’ and an adults’ raffle • A Wishing Tree • Hot dog stand • Christmas wreath making by Helmsley Walled Garden • Festive food and drink tastings • In store competitions, including an art quiz and ‘Crack the Safe’ Also taking place from 6th December will be Helmsley’s third annual Christmas Tree Festival, held at All Saint’s Church. This will run daily, 10am to 4pm, until 21st December and this year will see its 30 trees decorated along the theme of ‘An Iconic Christmas’. Those who want to extend the Festive Fun Day celebrations will also have the opportunity to go to the opening performances of Cinderella taking place at Helmsley Arts Centre with the first performance at 2.30pm, and the second at 7.30pm. Emma Woods, Treasurer at Helmsley in Business (HiB), said: “We are delighted with how plans are coming together – last year we ran our very first Festive Fun Day, which was a huge success, and this year will be much bigger and, dare we say it, better! SmallBusinessSaturday is a national event but we feel it really stands for everything
Helmsley is about. We have so many wonderful and unique independent businesses here, and we want to make sure everyone knows about them. The Festive Fun Day is a great way to encourage people to come along and perhaps pop into shops they may not otherwise have planned to, or to interact with business owners in the town. With the ice rink, and rides, and entertainment, and competitions and activities galore, there really will be something for everyone. So get it in your diary – we look forward to seeing you there!”

Live screening. 3pm. An un-missable festive delight for all the family, this version of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet is created by Yuri Grigorovich. With iconic music and enchanting sets and costumes, this beautiful tale explores the universal themes of love, power and evil. On Christmas Eve, Marie’s godfather, Drosselmeyer, gives her a strange toy: a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. At midnight, when the celebrations are over, all the toys magically come to life. The nutcracker grows to human size and takes charge of the tin soldiers, flying to the rescue of Marie, who is threatened by the Mouse King and his mouse army. This choreographic version is full of romanticism and philosophical reflections on ideal love. Masterfully interpreted by the Bolshoi dancers, it proves that one is never too young or too old to be swept away by The Nutcracker. Book early for this. Tickets: £16 | Concs £15 | U18
